It’s finally here. New York City. Bryant Park. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

The beginning part of the show was a tad boring. Carol Hannah has a relapse of her sickness. Christopher is so cute though, he says he is so happy that he is there to comfort her and get her stuff done. Aw, so adorable.

Althea and Irina run into another problem of “copying” one another when they are talking about their ideas for makeup. Their models didn’t end up looking alike, crisis averted.

Backstage before the show, the designers are all running around like chickens with their heads cut off and Tim Gunn is their farmer. “Designers, I’m about to lose it!” “The clock is ticking backwards!” “Your models are 10 percent dressed when they are supposed to be lining up!” “This is crazy!” Normally Tim is so calm and serene…

Heidi Klum’s outfit tonight looked like a hot pink 80’s mess. Seriously, you’re supposed to be judging fashion? Hideous. She looked like she was trying to be business Barbie.

The judges this week were of the usual’s, Heidi Klum, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia, with guest judge Susie Menkes who is a fashion critic. Could they not have gotten a celebrity or something to be the guest judge? I’ve never heard of Susie Menkes.

Althea went first. Her collection was inspired by 1950’s and 60’s sci-fi movies. It was supposed to be what the women of today would wear tomorrow. There was a lot of leather and it was a little boring. There were a lot of pieces that could be used as separates, so that was something new. Althea got a bravo for having sportswear, but the judges believed that she tried to hit too many notes with her collection, especially with the last 3 designs. The judges did like how she can translate the street to fashion.

Carol Hannah went second. In my opinion, her collection was the best. I always like what Carol Hannah does. She did a lot with drapery and volume and as always, did impeccable tailoring. The judges said they were always impressed with Carol Hannah and she played with color and energy the best, but she lacked the connection thread.

Irina went last. Her collection was about New York and what it takes to survive in the city as a woman. She had some of her models wear these super odd armor hats. The judges liked them, but I didn’t. The judges think that she is very plugged into the streets and what is cool and hip. She had the best showmanship and her collection looked finished. They were, however, disappointed in the lack of color, especially since she disregarded Nina’s advice.

I thought it would be tied between Irina and Carol Hannah, but Carol Hannah would pull through for a surprise win. This is what I would have liked, but this is not what happened. Irina was crowned Project Runway’s season 6 winner.

When you’re not Michael Kors or showing your line at Mercedes Benz Fashion week often you are the model for your own collection.I’m not a “little girl”; I’m not fat but I’m not skinny either…even though in my thick and lucious family I’m told that I’m too small at my now size 7/8.

Recently I started to look into modeling…and I was very surprised to learn that girls were considered plus size or full figured at size 6. SIZE 6??!! Size 6 ; are you kidding me? I know size 6. Size six was the girl in middle school who had the good hair, got boobs early, and knew how to work those made-for-bikini hips before the rest of us even knew what a bikini was.

At first I thought it was just my black culture up-bringing. We’re known to be thick and curvy. I’m thankful to have friends who are different races and cultures and I asked some of them how they felt about the plus sizes starting at size 6. Many of them were surprised..a size 10 or 12; yeah that’s understandable. But size 6?

When you hear the words plus size you immediately think thick or fat. I don’t know anyone that is a size 6 with a fat gut. What does that say about the fashion industry? It’s supposed to reflect us…not make us into something we’re not. Size 6 isn’t fat. 

I know I’m like the 3,000th person that has said this, but fat doesn’t mean ugly and thin doesn’t mean healthy. As long as you’re healthy and treating yourself right the beauty will come through. My sister is a size 15 with a flat stomach and killer curves. There is no way in hell I can look as good as she does at a size 15, but she’s healthy and it works for her.

Trust me, I speak from personal experience; a girl who went anorexic to be “thin and beautiful” for prom. Well I started to eat greasy food again after prom without excercising, got fat, decided to do it the right way; and now I’m the same size I was for my prom. But by doing it the right.

I want to say to all of those girls out there who had the same misconceptions as me, thinking that you couldn’t model because you weren’t thin enough; screw the bullshit. You have the talent and you’re healthy right? So get your butt out there on that runway and show them what true beauty looks like.

Team Mya

 

Mya Harrison, aka, Team Mya got a big boost this week by performing at a level that hard to please judge, Len Goodman could finally fully appreciate.

Mya and her partner Dmitry Chaplin put on a stunning performance of the Argentine tango, that was presented with sophisticated, classy choreography,coupled with  charismaticlly intriguing leg lift’s ,dramatic poses, and skillful timing.

Len told the pair that he…”does not know what I like until I see it”…and in this case he liked what he had just seen.

He awarded the pair with the highest score he has given them this season. They got a 9 from him for this performance.

What that means is that they are improving in his critical eyes, and that there is still some room for improvement.

Interestingly enough, Bruno and Carrie Ann lowered their score for team Mya down to a 9, from the past two weeks scores of 10, from the two judges.

My scores remained the same for team Mya,as they were in the past. I think she is definitely performing at the level of a 10, and they might need to add more numbers to that scale, so I can rate her even higher, if possible. But I am not a professional dancer, so it all impresses me.

What I see in the team Mya performances, is that the two seem to be developing a great artistic collaboration. It is a well known fact that Mya has a dance background, but that is in other forms of dance. Ballroom dancing is a very specific and technical form of dancing, and is very specialised.

 It appears that her developed sense of movement in general, and her obvious acting experience, has helped the pair with their artistic communication.

I am pretty sure Dmitry is a confident and exceptional choreographer by himself, but as all great artist will attest to, if you add in to the mix, another great artistic influence like Mya, then the end result will be stronger, more diverse, and will have many layers to the performance.

The passion for the performances can be felt just by witnessing the dance evolve before our eyes. I am always amazed by the fact that the show is live on the East coast,and given that, anything could happen, yet team Mya executes the choreography as if they were in a room by themselves.

That is the hallmark of a professional, and that is what I look for in entertainers.

I think it was fitting that in a night where a new young star is rising like Phoenix, that the producer of ”DWTS” would choose to present a wonderful tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

The band and the dancers were awesome, and it was a pleasant surprise to see Michael’s mom Katherine in the audience, smiling, looking happy, and cheering on the performers honoring her late son.

I am sure the King of Pop is smiling at what he has influenced in all of the performers, and the dedication and persistence that Michael was all about, is definitely apparent in the efforts of Mya, on this season of ”Dancing With the Stars”.

Team Mya received the highest score of 27 for this weeks performance.I look forward to what they have in store for us next week, as they must learn two new intricate dances.

These moments are not according to me, but I wish. Not to brag, but I was this close to making it to Fashion Week! But due to personal reasons, I couldn’t. (Oh well, there’s always next year!) So I give you Glamour Magazine’s list of all the craziness that incude which include fashion hits (and misses), one of the many “Housewives” cast still getting attention for no particular reason, soccer games, and a Courtney Love come back. Yes, I’m still talking about that Fashion Week.

2. Yohji Yamamoto scored big.

Who says fashion fans can’t enjoy a little sport from time to time? At the end of his Y-3 show—which took place on a soccer field-like runway—designer Yohji Yamamoto came out with two soccer balls in hand. He grabbed über-cute French soccer star Zinedine Zidane from the front row of the audience, and one lucky photographer played goalie while the two VIPs took their best shot. Naturally, the crowd went wild.

That’s right: Courtney Love performed at a gas station this Fashion Week. We should add that the downtown gas station is where super-hip designer Alexander Wang’s after-party was held, but that doesn’t make it sound any more normal, does it?

How did Fashion Week fare?

It was all over the runway the season, but you probably didn’t see it!  While invisible post-application, its effects are dramatic and have changed the lives (or at least the locks) of supermodels and everyday fashionistas alike.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week saw another outstanding season, as once again the iconic runways of Bryant Park hosted some of the world’s most talented designers.  The Tents featured esteemed veteran designers such as Diane Von Furstenberg, Michael Kors, Isaac Mizrahi, Tommy Hilfiger, Anna Sui, Carolina Herrera and Max Azria. Several of the season’s hottest designers like Tory Burch, Doo. Ri and Erin Wasson x RVCA displayed their talent on this global fashion platform alongside Nanette Lepore, Tracy Reese, Custo Barcelona, Nicole Miller, Charlotte Ronson and Phillip Lim.

The global media once again was focused on the business of fashion as well as on reporting on the newest designs and upcoming trends. The designers worked long and hard to create collections to inspire their customers to once again go shopping, said Fern Mallis, Senior Vice-President of IMG Fashion, which owns and operates the event.  And this season, the graphic theme of luggage had several subliminal meanings from the greatest trunk show in fashion to paying homage to all the industry professionals from around the world who packed their bags and traveled to New York to attend Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week – and to also remind everyone it will soon be time to pack up the tents and move to Lincoln Center.

So why will Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week be relocating?  Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg explained that Damrosch Park at Lincoln Center offers 17,000 square feet more than the current venue.  The move will also help to resolve concerns over large crowds, security issues, and the conflict of space during winter months when Bryant Park operates an ice-skating rink.  What are your thoughts on Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week’s move from this iconic location?

Michael Kors was the very first show I shot at Bryant Park. Ever. I was visibly nervous and my lighting ended up being a bit “off”. But I still ended up getting some good shots thanks to the many friendly photographers in the press pit who helped me out. They answered my questions, and recommended camera settings to assist in get the best photos. Every photographer I encountered Wednesday was unbelievably helpful once they found out I was “a rookie” (even the one or two who I later saw getting into a fight over space in the press pit at Anna Sui).

Michael’s color palette consisted of mostly whites, pale blues and lavenders, and black. Clear panels dominated on cut out dresses, and clear chunky jewelry made up a large part of the accessories collection:

I have known Peter Som for 13 years since we were both back in Parsons School of Design, NY. Peter’s designs has always been praised by the professors and admired by fellow classmates. His clean, subtle luxe & all American chic style has set him apart from most of us both back in design college, Parsons and now in the design world. Besides his undeniable talent and taste for fashion, he is also a person with a lot of wit, humor, easy going and simply a great person to be calling a friend.

I’ve seen Peter’s very first collection starting back in year 2001, besides his undeniable talent, he has also worked very hard and able to stay focus on his vision for each collections. Year after year, you can always count on Peter to give us the kinda uptown chic – downtown cool, effortless chic designer clothes you can actually wears in the modern daily lives! People often compare him to be “The next Michael Kors”, but to me, he has his own very own unique taste and look that no one has!

As we all know, to achieve what Peter does, become a house hold name as a young designer that has all the fashion magazine editors such as the Queen of American fashion – Chief Editor of Vogue Magazine Anna Wintour who loves Peter’s most recent Spring Summer 2012 collection and having the A-List Celebrities wanting to wear his creations is very tall order to achieve! But Peter has done it with persistence, drive & believing in his vision.

Fashion is like the show business in Hollywood, both are selling “Dreams” & “Fantasies”. Each season, designers dazzle us with their creative visions and beautiful collections all over the world, but when the reality of the world wide economy downturn sets in, every designers are effected by it and it has impacted Peter Some starting early 2009. Peter has had a bumpy ride over the years including losing financial backing. But his Spring/Summer 2010 collection, is reinstating his place as an accomplished and talented designer.

He showed his collection at MAC & Milk Studios this year as an installation show, where those with invitations were allowed to come in and peruse the collection as you would in an art gallery. The models stood on a runway broken into three parts and posed for photos as guests sipped cocktails and water, chatted with Som as he strolled through the crowd and talked about the amazing collection.

Peter took his inspirations—Lartigue’s iconic photos of twenties-era Deauville, Hokusai’s woodcuts, classic cruisewear—and wove them together with a sort of madcap thread. The mixture of colour and textures sets Peter Som’s collection apart from many others. mixing stripey tweeds with all manner of prints and off-kilter fabrics, like a turquoise leopard jacquard. He kept his silhouettes soigné but found ways to give his classic uptown standards a whimsical tweak.. For Som it was all about “season less dressing” and each piece is a very special by itself, to me, it’s a very smart move because each piece is a “Must Have” piece that you can add to and mix with pieces you already have in your closet. I think that this thinking could be the way forward especially in these recession times. Peter Som is definitely one to watch. As they say what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.

Even with the troubling year, It did not seem like Peter Som held back on quality even though it was all out of pocket. Most designers rely on a certain financial backing in regards to releasing a line each season- Which can include up to 4 collections each year… but Peter Som still offers up a collection that was a collective of Mix Matched texture and color in Undeniable Som style.

While Peter may have left his past with legendary American fashion house Bill Blass behind him, but with the many opportunities such as possibily be the head designer for Tommy Hilfiger & his new jewelry collections in the horizon, we’ll see more of him & his creations in the future.

All I have to say is his Spring-Summer 2010 collection was a breath of fresh air and should turn even the most jaded, black-loving urbanite fashionistas into an optimistic pattern mixing master in the coming spring!

As the year of 2009 is marching to the end ( yes 3 more months till the holiday season, the “happiest time of the year” haha) with the bright, colorful, sparkly collections Peter just shown in NYC, we hope all the bad news are behind you Peter! and we’re all rooting for you! Love the looks you see walking down the catwalks of Mercedes Benz fashion week, but don’t know where to find them in your neck of the woods? Don’t fret. Harlem World has done the hard work for you.
N Boutique (171 Lenox Avenue, between 118th & 119th Street) With a new location and a new attitude, the N Boutique provides a well edited collection of both established and emerging designers. Visit them for looks from one of my fashion week favorites, Tracy Reese.

K&G Superstore (300 W 125th St, and Frederick Douglass Blvd) Known for its large selection of business-friendly attire, K&G provides both casual and professional options for the entire family at discounted prices. Look for deals from designers Kenneth Cole, Anne Klein, Calvin Kline and Baby Phat.

Target (coming soon to East Harlem, now at 700 Exterior St, Bronx, NY) This mega-store has gained a recent publicity boost from its decision to carry lower cost lines from some of the world’s most sought after designers, such as Alexander McQueen and Matthew Williamson. Find recession conscious versions of the following looks from Issac Mizrahi and Anna Sui at your local store.
