Packed in my bags is my cookery school book and my guide to running a chalet. In my hand luggage is Bertrand Russell’s History of Western Philosophy.
I suspect that the most common philosophy of a chalet girl is ‘work hard, play hard’. I am going to put this to the test. It is possible that this is so true that I will never get beyond a few pages of Bertrand Russell’s wisdom and the book will languish as a door stop. On the other hand, it could be a useful prism to put burnt cakes and blocked loos into perspective.
The next three months will tell. This is day one.

Snow reports by twitter – that’s just so NOW.  Well that’s what we thought, but maybe we’re just a bit on the geeky side.

As usual the story starts in the pub.  It’s a bit of a blur, but someone suggested that it’d be cool if they could get their snow reports delivered directly to their twitter stream.  So that’s exactly what we’ve done.  Initially we’ve only got 11 resorts set up, but people find it useful we’ll add some more. Some shots from The Alps

Today I did something really unbelievably stupid. There’s a guy I know, a frehsman, who’s ok I guess as a friend, but nothing more. Anyway, he kept texting and asking if I wanted to hang out. Which I really didn’t. But to make him go away I told him I would go to Starbucks with him, AS FRIENDS. And it was SOOO awkward. Like, unbelievably awkward. People I know kept coming in and mouthing behind his back, ‘ARE YOU GUYS GOING OUT?!?!?!’ and I was just like, ‘NO! NO! NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. NO!!!‘. So by now probably half the school probably thinks we’re going out. Which we are most definitely NOT. I wouldn’t even let him pay for my tea. Maybe he got the hint. Maybe not. Now he keeps telling me to go on IM. Which is SO not happening.

Other than that momentary brain fart in agreeing to grab a tea with him, today’s been ok. Asswipe’s no different. The docs now think it’s some strain of mono, but his ANA readings were high (?) so they’re referring him to a rheumatologist, just for the heck of it. If anyone out there reads this at some point and actually gets what that means, please feel free to leave a reply explaining, because despite reading the wikipedia article I still don’t get what ANAs are. So that’s Asswipe. Meribel suddenly has been having rather major bladder issues. She hasn’t had an accident in months, and then between yesterday and today, she’s had 8. I think it’s quite obvious there’s something wrong, but my dad says that’s impossible because she’s been pooing on the spot too, and she would never do that. Whatever. She’s due for a checkup soon anyways. Katie is at another practice… I’m not sure what sport. And my mother is still in London (she left… Monday? Tuesday?), but she’ll be back tomorrow I think. Unless her flight is cancelled. Has anyone checked the news lately? American cancelled about 1000 flights! I mean, holy shit! That’s a LOT of people stranded. If you figure an average of 100 people per plane (and I’m sure there’s more) that’s 100,000 people stuck either on vacation or without their vacation. Not good, not good. I mean, it’s good the companies are suddenly becoming interested in safety, but a bit worrying that they had to ground 1000 flights upon finally doing some inspections. Quite scary, actually.

On a better note, the Red Sox finally broke their streak in the home game opener. Then they lost again last night. But they WILL win tonight. They WILL. I think it’s Wakefield pitching tonight, and he has a decent record against the Tigers, whereas I heard the other pitcher has a less than stellar record against the Red Sox. We’ll see though. This may just not be the Sox’ years to win again. That’s ok. We dealt with losing for 86 years. I figure a drought of a year or two is fair enough, considering we’ve won twice in the last 4 years.

Created in 1938 by the english gentleman Peter Lindsay, the famous french resort is perfectly integrated in its natural environment, and recreates successfully the atmosphere of the original alpine villages. Meribel is best discovered through a stay at the Spa Le Grand Coeur, founded in 1952.

One week in a relatively quiet Meribel, with decent snow to boot, and city chap has returned home a battered, but fresh, person.

A contact who had arrived from the Geneva bio-energy exhibition proudly explained how he had driven over using an adapted bio-diesel Audi and that an average 54 mph total trip meant that he had reduced his carbon footprint by x percent. This was surely an impressive feat I thought, as the chairlifts, piste bashers, cable cars, ski-boot heaters, terrace-heaters, Mercedes-Benz vans and Russian-owned Hummers geared their way about me.

Much more impressive was his new piece of tech kit – some Walkie Talkie Doro Ski Kit phones. These babies have a 6km range and operate via throat-mics, which allow you to communicate using the vibrations from your voice-box – this means that even in windy or adverse conditions you can still be heard clearly. I also like the voice activation mode and the PTT button that could be attached to a ski pole. Very neat. Communication is free, so no more expensive calls trying to get everyone in the group back to the same mountain restaurant, and no licence is needed. There are 8 selectable channels and 38 sub codes to each channel which gives over 300 different channel combinations – so decent privacy if you’re a Russian oligarch.
