Don’t let Krawk Island fool you though. Seeded sixth going into the finals, Krawk Island beat Darigan, Shenkuu, Roo Island, Lost Desert, and Virtupets during Altador Cup V. KI also had a better yooyuball record than second place Kreludor and was one of the only team to win over 20 games in three of the four AC games. They still had power I believe, it’s just Altador Cup V had a lot of good teams.

Chances: Krawk Island is one of those teams I don’t think you’ll ever be able to write off. While it certainly is possible for Krawk Island to win it all if they make the finals, making the finals will not be an easy task. Personally, I have Maraqua, Darigan, and Kreludor already written in on my ‘Top 4′, but as for the fourth team, it’s a toss-up that could easily land favorably for Krawk Island.

Meridell came back from the depths of the third tier and made it known they would not go quietly into the night. Barely missing the finals thanks to Roo Island, Meridell slipped up in the playoffs and was handed eighth place. (I can’t completely fault them though, it’s hard to play for fifth place and you already have it, but you wanted first)

Chances: Meridell was a yooyuball powerhouse last year; the knights beat every team last year at least once with the exception of Roo Island. Where Meridell falters, of course, is the side games. All three of their side game records are below average for a team that was looking to make the finals. Meridell certainly has potential, but are they spectacular enough to make themselves one of the top four teams in the cup? Every point counts this year for Meridell unless they revamp their side game powers. Any would help really, you can’t have a third tier team (Haunted Woods) do better than you and expect to play for the gold.

Lost Desert claimed their gold last year. LD has been eerily consistent through the years in all of their games with the help of their well-structured fan base. That is all in the past now though. They now have to deal with the pressures and doubts that come with being the defending champions.

Chances: Defending champions have been doing better and better each year lately, but Lost Desert certainly wasn’t separated from the pack last season (Roo Island had just as many yooyuball points and Darigan had more). Teams are ready to pounce if (and probably when) they slip up. Expect Lost Desert to put up a fight though. Krawk Island was less than one point away from the finals last year. It is possible for a defending champ to make the finals now after all these years.

If Hollywood was to make a movie about an Altador Cup team, it would without a doubt be the story of the little team that could: Virtupets. After finishing dead last in Altador Cup II and 14th in Altador Cup III, Virtupets came out of nowhere and dominated SOSD, leaving only two blemishes on what would have been a perfect record. Surely they couldn’t repeat that, right? Yes, they instead went up to sixth place while beating the likes of Darigan, Maraqua, and Meridell in yooyuball.

Chances: When suggesting that Virtupets could be trying to make a claim to them playing for the gold, it is kind of hard to take seriously at first. Cellar-dweller Virtupets? In the finals? The thing is though, they’ve earned the right to be discussed. The robots earned more yooyuball points than Kreludor, more SOSD points than Darigan, and more SS and MSN points than Roo Island. You can’t really predict Virtupets this year on anything other than gut feeling. Nothing like this has ever happened in the cup. They’re so small, have risen so much, and have such potential in big games. I have to ask you this though: Has Virtupets done better every year since AC II?

Leaving the feel good story, we head to the one that probably made fans cry. Altador Cup V was supposed to be Shenkuu’s year. Krawk Island had finally won and had made way for Shenkuu to finally win gold in their fourth trip to the finals. It’s really pretty scary what happened to Shenkuu. Their train really did fly off the tracks and into a wall labeled 11th place.

Chances: The good thing about flying off the radar is that nobody really expects anything from you the year after. Shenkuu was carrying the eyes of Neopia in Altador Cup V and can now finally breathe. For the first time ever Shenkuu isn’t returning from a trip to the finals. While Shenkuu doesn’t have any pressure after finishing 11th though, they also still have their potential. We all know the team is capable of being a team playing in the first place match. (I certainly do, being beat up by Shenkuu was a hobby for Kreludor in AC IV.) Of course an 11th place team making the finals is an outside chance, but they do have a chance.

There was no denying at the time that we had two new, real competitors on our hands. Both teams had the power to strike fear into the hearts of anyone. Unfortunately, both of the new powers missed out on the finals due to a last second run by Shenkuu, therefore we saw Meridell and Kreludor duel it out for 5th place.

Come Altador Cup IV next season, the spotlight was turned on. Could Meridell make it to the finals? Could Kreludor place? Could they both maybe? Would the young teams crack under pressure? It didn’t take the speculators long to find their answer:

On opening day, both of the new ‘powerhouses’ were facing tough opponents. Shenkuu was playing Meridell while Darigan faced off against Kreludor. Meridell was manhandled by Shenkuu; the ninjas completely swept the knights. Kreludor picked up a respectable WDDW. (Not that we knew DC was ‘back.’)

Kreludor had it pretty easy the next three days; Kiko Lake, Faerieland, and Virtupets were their next three foes. Meridell on the other hand was a completely different story. After they played Shenkuu on the opening day, they had to look at Krawk Island and Lost Desert approaching. The Altador Cup’s scheduling committee cut them a break the next day by giving them Kiko Lake before they had to play their newfound rivals, Kreludor.

What was about to happen was not a pretty sight. Meridell was swept by Krawk Island. Meridell was swept by Lost Desert. Meridell lost two side games to Kiko Lake. Meridell was swept by Kreludor.

Later in that round, Meridell was handed loses by Roo Island, Mystery Island (a sweep), Tyrannia, Haunted Woods, and Darigan. In the end, Meridell’s season could be labeled nothing but a disappointment. MD finished the year placing 11th.

Now, you can take this anyway you please. In my opinion, Meridell can’t just lose that much power overnight. Despite their horrific performance, they are still the same team that beat Roo Island, the future champions, in yooyuball. I’m also a big believer in that morale affects the game a lot. After losing to Shenkuu on the first day, then having to play the future champions, then playing the best yooyuball team we’ve ever seen, then playing the champion of the double round robin, how do you think you would do after that?

I’m not saying that Meridell will be charging back and knocking everyone in their way down, but they earned respect in Altador Cup III and we don’t have the right to take that away from them so quickly. They have to do well this year though; it’s make or break.

O Time de Meridell, atualmente, surpreendente na Copa III, decepcionante na IV e moderado na V... o que o futuro reserva para os Cavaleiros?

Meridell, terra de Rei Skarl. Um dos mais poderosos times na Copa III, uma das maiores decepções na Copa IV. Contudo, na Copa V, conseguiram recuperar – PARTE – de sua antiga forma e, agora, a dúvida permanece – eles irão tombar novamente este ano, ou irão conseguir um bom resultado?

A Copa de Altador I já começou pesada para Meridell. Iriam enfrentar um time poderoso, com uma vasta legião de fãs: Maraqua. Como já narrado no artigo de Maraqua: “

Maraqua começou a Copa de Altador I com o pé esquerdo. Dois times médios iriam se enfrentar: Meridell e Maraqua. O resultado era totalmente imprevisível. Começou o jogo, Maraqua na sua formação 2+2, com 2 defensores e 2 atacantes – duas verdadeiras estrelas, Elon huglins e Jair Tollet. Meridell, com sua formação de três atacantes, rapidamente passou pelos defensores a abriu dois gols de vantagem em poucos minutos! Seria o fim de Maraqua? NÃO – e graças à ele, ELON HUGHLINS! pouco a pouco, ela foi colocando Maraqua de volta no jogo, marcando três gols. a Torcida de Maraqua festejava, mas acabou que Meridell empatou a dois minutos do final, com um belo gol de Windelle, o capitão. A defesa Maraquana ficou mais atenta do que nunca. 30 segundos, o lance decisivo: Fiorina consegue driblar a defesa Maraquana, mas o próprio Jair Toller aparece e rouba a bola. Driblou facilmente dois jogadores que vieram para cima, e chutou… BUM! Na trave! a bola voltou direto nas mortíferas mãos de Windelle, que driblou e chutou… gol!! E, a dez segundos do fim, a partida fora selada… e Maraqua voltou para casa.”

Após isso, houve o embate com os arqui-rivais, a Cidadela de Darigan. Meridell fez o possível, mas Darigan era boa demais. Três gols no começo, e Meridell não conseguiu virar. Era o fim da linha para o time de azul.

A Copa de Altador II veio, e Meridell era um time sem expectativas: Ninguém, sabia se ganharia ou perderia. Por fim, terminou em oitavo, com 15 vitórias de Yooyubol ao todo – uma atuação mais que decente. Os jogos mais marcantes foram o contra a Ilha do Mistério, em que o defensor da ilha foi contundido e teve de ser substituído pelo resto da Copa, e um jogo acirrado com Maraqua, a segunda partida, que terminou com um empate selado no último minuto por Wizard Windelle. Uma campanha regular, que não mostrou o brilho de Meridell – que ocorreu na copa seguinte

Muitos times tiveram Glória na Copa II e Derrocada na III. Entretanto, a Copa III foi A Copa para Meridell. Ninguém sabe o que foi, exatamente. Um empenho maior dos jogadores? A excelente atuação do goleiro recém-contratado Yoris Obbles, novato do ano e segundo melhor goleiro de toda Neopia? Talvez tenha sido tudo isso junto. Mas Meridell ficou em quinto colocado, Com 16 vitórias no yooyubol, e uma grande quantia de vitórias nas raspadinhas também. O jogo contra Kreludor, na última rodada, foi o mais emocionante, mas o jogo contra a Cidadela de Darigan também foi excelente – especialmente no confronto Tormo “The Terror” contra Wizzard Windelle, que marcou o jogador de tal forma que o sexto artilheiro daquela copa só conseguiu um gol na partida. Contra Kreludor, dois gols da Dupla de Ouro tiraram a esperança da torcida, mas não do time, que virou essa difícil situação e levou a quinta colocação para casa!

Na Copa IV, entretanto, Meridell desandou. Inexplicavelmente, perdeu, perdeu, perdeu… perdia para times médios, empatava com fracos… onde foi parar o brilho da Copa III? Foi parar no 11º lugar… a maior decepção da copa, sem sombra de dúvidas. Porque, Meridell,  jogaste a maior chance de tua vida no Lixo? Nunca iremos entender…

Chegou a Copa V, e Meridell começou de forma um tanto quanto decepcionante. Contudo, logo conseguiram recuperar e encaixar algumas vitórias importantes. Por um período da competição, os Cavaleiros eram cotados ao Grupo 1, mas não o atingiram. Terminaram num oitavo lugar, decepcionante, mas uma melhora geral. A força de Meridell é, com certeza, seu poderio no Yooyubol. Contudo, precisam melhorar as habilidades de Mini-games se pretendem ir mais longe, e estabilizar um pouco mais seus resultados. Meridell é um time com potencial – e com uma laaaarga base de fãs – e, com um pouco de sorte, pode conseguir uma colocação melhor esse ano.

"Wizard" Windelle, o Mago do Yooyu, e capitão do time

Windelle leva esse nome, e também o apelido de “Mago do Yooyu” pela sua extrema perícia com o petpet bola. Assim como Bertie Shurtz, da Ilha do Mistério, ele se auto-denomina um mal marcador. Ainda assim, é ele que faz praticamente todos os gols de Meridell, tendo sido o sexto artilheiro da Copa de Altador III! Um jogador de passes precisos, inteligência elevada e talento natural, ele é alguém que poderá ingressar na seleção de Neopia esse ano.

Ilsa Ellits, o Defensor solitário de Meridell

Ilsa Ellits é o único defensor de Meridell. Enorme, ele é um monstro quando decide derrubar alguém, e sabe passar muito bem, comunicando defesa e ataque explendidamente.

Fiorina, a atacante direita

Fiorina é quem melhor finaliza no grupo, mas poucos passam para ela, pois Windelle tem uma sorte enorme: parece que o Yooyu vai sozinho ao gol quando está nas mãos dele, mesmo que seja um chute ruim. Logo, ela não consegue se exibir tanto quanto poderia. Ainda assim, é uma excelente marcadora, que raramente desperdiça uma oportunidade, além de ser uma ótima roubadora de bola, geralmente tomando o Yooyu do oponente antes que chegue à defesa.

Yoris Obbles, o melhor novato de Neopia

Novato do Ano. Goleiro reserva da Seleção de Neopia. Esse é Yoris Obbles, o excepcional goleiro de Meridell. Um talento que a esquadra de Skarl encontrou e lapidou, transformando-o em um dos melhores jogadores da atualidade. Alguns o chamam de “O Novo Garven Hale”. Ele é pequeno e sua inexperiência atrapalha, mas sua energia, resistência ao cansaço e sua resistência à trombadas e investidas fazem dele um excelente goleiro, ainda que não tenha as mãos e reflexos tão elevados. Ele foi um dos grandes responsáveis pela excelente atuação de Meridell na Copa III.

Gregorio Maille, o terceiro atacante

Gregorio sofre do mesmo mal de Fiorina: os inexplicáveis gols de “Wizard” Windelle. Muito rápido, muitas vezes ele pega o Yooyu e o conduz ao ataque, tocando para fiorina ou, na maioria das vezes, Windelle. Seu tamanho o atrapalha, tornando fácil a qualquer um derruba-lo, mas tem que ser rápido para se equiparar Gregorio.

Bem, é isso. Meridell conseguiu o seu melhor resultado na Copa III, onde emplacou uma rivalidade com Kreludor, mas acabaram sendo vastamente superados pelos Lunáticos. Será que esse ano, os Cavaleiros irão se equiparar, ou teremos outra queda vergonhosa? Em breve descobriremos.
