It’s December and the year 2009 is almost ended (well just about a few days to go), and was wondering what my last post was going to be about. In truth, only one idea came to mind; and that is Reflecting on Technology Trends for the year. This is comprised of Tech News, Telecommunication, Tech Events, Governments Tech Plans vs Implementations etc. Please be reminded that the list I have come up with is limited to my memory of the technological happenings in Ghana for the year.

DNA Tests can now be taken in Ghana

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology installed a DNA equipment which makes it possible for conducting DNA tests in the country. Estimated at GHc15 million, the equipment also included those that could conduct glaucoma tests, undertake assorted seed propagation, as well as water and quality food analysis. The project was financed through the university’s’ internally generated funds; the equipment, and others installed and refurbished under a project called, “The Turnkey Project” were inaugurated at the College of Sciences of the KNUST. First iPhone Game from Ghana on the appstore

Leti Games mobile fun for all is a mobile phone game developer company based in Accra-Ghana. It was founded by two friends Eyram Akofa Tawia and Wesley Kiriinya from Ghana and Kenya respectively in 2009. By the way, Eyram is a product of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana (KNUST). It is Leti Game’s aim to introduce the gaming world to mobile and computer games made in Africa by Africans. Read more here

Ghana to get Biometric Passports in 2010

Ghana will from April next year issue its citizens with biometric passports, the acting Director, Legal and Consular Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, McArios Akanbeanab Akanbong, has disclosed.

This is to enable the country to meet the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) deadline for member states to provide their nationals with such a document to avoid being denied entry into member countries of ICAO. Read more here

In September 2009, the british engineer, computer scientist and MIT professor, Sir Tim Berners-Lee credited with the inventing the World Wide Web, was in the country as part of a four-nation. While here, he met up with the Ghanaian Internet Community at the  to engage in discussions regarding internet usage in the country and possible future trends.

Exhibiting African Ingenuity @ MakerFaire

Maker Faire Africa asks the question, “What happens when you put the drivers of ingenious concepts from Mali with those from Ghana and Kenya, and add resources to the mix?”

This event was aimed at helping identify, spur and support local innovation. At the same time, Maker Faire Africa sought to imbue creative types in science and technology with an appreciation of fabrication and by default manufacturing. The event took place at the KACE. Tonight Alive is an aussie band on the rise

PREVIEW: VISIT Tonight Alive’s Myspace

For this week’s Emerging Artists, I bring you a band from down-under called Tonight Alive. That’s right folks, we’re going to Australia for some tunes.

Formed earlier this year, these guys are the Aussie version of Paramore, complete with lead singer Jenna Mcdougall, whose vocals rival those of Paramore’s Hayley Williams, pop-punk guitar riffs and beats. The rest of the band is composed of dudes–who have some kickass accents, if you’re into that– whose synchronized head banging is sure to bring them some attention in the States. They’ve already had a few dates over here, supporting acts such as 3Oh!3 and Mest.

Keep your eye out for their EP, due out this coming January, and hopefully a tour to follow.

I got involved in computer /PSP gaming in the early years of 1999, while visiting my grandfather (on vacation from high school). One of my uncles, Adrian was then a graphics designer working from the study room at home. From time to time I would run there to play around with his computer, pretty cool huh:-). There, I got intrigued and fascinated by his style of entrepreneurship, so during the day when everyone was off to work, I would go into his office and basically read books about computers. One day on one of my computer explorations, I discovered EA’s ‘Need 4 Speed II’ (a car racing game). From this point, all I can say is that I got crazy about gaming to the extent that when school reopened, I always looked forward to my next computer lab sessions because it was an opportunity to find ‘NFS II’ on one of the computers. Since then (1999), I have played games such as NFS, Bobby Carrot, etc and during those times I never came across one with an African story or even one from Africa (well I never even thought it would happen). That’s what brings me to Leti Games’s iWarrior game on the appstore.

Indeed, I must say that I was very privileged to play this game during its development stages as I worked with the developers (Eyram and Wesley) in the same organisation (Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology). I saw it from the time when it was just an idea and it was pretty exciting getting to see and play it on the iPhone. Now let me give you a brief description about the game and how it works:
The Game:

iWarrior is a casual game with great African art and sounds. With its simple intense game play, iWarrior puts you in the role of protecting your village from Africa’s most feared wild animals.

“…how cool would it be if i met up with the Microsoft founder or the president of my home country someday in my life..?” These were some of the fantasies I nurtured as I grew older and I must admit that I still do have them from time to time (well because I am still very young – hahahaa ).

As a young and ambitious Ghanaian entrepreneur, I decided to take a different path considering my interests, studies at the university – B.A. Information Studies (University of Ghana – Legon) and combining these two elements with my passion to make the society better, I started pursuing software entrepreneurship. I began this this journey with a two year traineeship program with the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology, where I basically learned Commercial Software Development.

This institution created a global environment, where trainees interacted with teaching fellows from countries such as USA, Germany, Singapore, India, Italy, Canada, Sweden, Norway and not forgetting my very home country Ghana. I must say that it was quite a dynamic, challenging and at the same time fun environment

Again, while pursuing this program, i read a great deal about start-ups in the ‘Bay Area’ , I read about the founders of companies such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Google, Pathable and a host of others from the internet and also from books such as ‘Good to Great. In my readings, these guys seemed very far from Africa. But all was not lost, during one of our ‘Guest Lecture Series’, we had a special guest in the person of Estelle Sowah – the country director of Google Ghana. I was overwhelmed with her position as the country director for Google Ghana, and yet she appeared so simple I could not believe my eyes. She came in a ‘plain black Google branded T-Shirt with an ordinary pair of blue jeans pants!!!

Let me give you an idea of the people I have met during these ‘Guest Lecture Series’:

• Jeroen Weimer (Partner at KPMG Corporate Finance)

I learned a great deal of stuff from Estelle, ranging from personal to professional stuff. And if I could talk about one of the things, it’s that she is confident and she sees no barriers in whatever she does. Thanks Estelle!!!!

“You’re a lot more punk rock than I am,” says Amy.

I frown a little and look at the crowd at the Mest concert, who all look a whole lot more punk than me… “I’m punk by church standards, but not by concert standards.”

That gives you a bit of a glimpse into where I was on Friday. I had the night off youth group to go to a concert of a band that Amy and I have loved since we were 13 or so – we’re now 20. Scary, huh? It was a great night and has made me pretty nostalgic about the times when I went to gigs or just spent nights in my bedroom listening to music and writing fan fiction. Yes, I was that kid.

Right now I’m sitting in the church office filling in time before band practice by watching live videos of Mest – the band we saw on Friday night. The energy in the crowd is electric, and it’s making me wish I was there again, but then I think a bit more about what’s going on… It feels good at the time, but then you’re back to reality, hanging out until the next show when you can escape. And I can remember that outside those moments where I was lost in my own world, life sucked.

Today I’m playing bass at the youth service, and the 7:15 service. Sure, there are no fancy lights. There’s less of a mosh pit. But… we’re worshipping in that moment, and if we’ve got something right, then those moments aren’t the only ones we’re getting lost in God’s glory.

Sure, sometimes I think maybe I picked the wrong path.

But… I didn’t. I know I didn’t, because my life isn’t about those single, rare moments.

It’s about living every moment, for God.

Nu har jag bloggat i snart två år och visst har jag glömt en del inslag och kanske har jag bloggat om denna underbara fasad/installation och då får ni se den igen! Fasaden som är att likna vid en dubbelfasad tillhör SWAROVSKI i Wattens i Österrike är helt fantastisk och tillverkad i mesh, dvs rostfria ringar 12mm.

Dessa bilder är fantastiska och fasaden ringlar runt huvudkontoret som ljussätts nattetid.

Swarovskikristallen föddes när Daniel Swarovski uppfann den automatiska slipmaskinen 1892. Företaget Swarovski bildades när han 1895 öppnade en kristallfabrik i Wattens (text från Wikipedia).

Ni som har läst min hemsida vet att hofv2 metalldesign är återförsäljare till alphamesh i Skandinavien och vi hoppas naturligtvis snart på en fasad i ringar:)

Olifantenpoep wordt de nieuwste rage voor tuinbezitters. Voor 5 euro vult een olifant uw emmer. Het spul is werkelijk wonderbaarlijk. Vooral rozen bloeien erop als nooit tevoren. Het schijnt zelfs rozen in een woestijn te laten floreren.

En wat dacht u van het statusverhogende effect. Ik hoor het een kakmadam in een of andere villawijk op een zomerse high tea al in haar prieeltje zeggen. “Mijn tuin doet het echt fantastisch op olifantenpoep.” “Oh kijk, wat ééénig! Een mestkever met een bal! Die beestjes kunnen toch zóóó mieters spelen met dat goedje van mijn geslurfde vrinden.”

Tjonge! Zelfs mijn pc had moeite met het uploaden van dit plaatje.

Vorig jaar is er door een tuinder een pompoen gekweekt die met geen mogelijkheid van het volkstuincomplex kon worden verwijderd. Een creatieve geest van de club kwam toen op het idee om een deal te sluiten met Blijdorp. Zij leveren een olifantenkracht en wij zorgen ervoor dat het een journaal-item wordt. Zo werd het complex pompoenvrij gemaakt en kreeg Blijdorp gratis mestreclame.

Maar er zijn ook tuinders die ervan terugkomen. Want het is niet echt leuk, wanneer je een tuintje van 100 vierkante meter hebt waar slechts één krop sla in past. Bovendien loopt de club langzamerhand leeg. Vanwege rugklachten…

Bij Lewenborg de stad Groningen verlaten en al fietsend richting Engelbert gegaan. Een flesje water en uiteraard het fototoestel mee. Ik had mijzelf de opdracht gegeven”Fototgrafeer dieren”.

Aan het laatste kon ik mij natuurlijk niet helemaal houden, het kerkje van Middelbert en vanaf de Engelberterweg de skyline van de stad met daarin de torenflat De Stoker. De in aanbouw zijnde torenflats Tasmantoren en Stoker worden behoorlijk bepalend voor de skyline van onze stad. Een agrariër was zijn land aan het bemesten via de injectiemethode, trok mooie lijnen over het landschap. Daarnaast de roeibaan van Harkstede met zijn windmolenpark. Het park bestaat uit twee rijen windmolens, 6 stuks aan weerszijden van de baan. Zij leveren jaarlijks een vermogen van 960 kW per jaar, wat goed is voor het jaarverbruik van ongeveer 550 huishoudens. Een perceel met groeiend graan, de wind liet de opkomende halmen wuiven. Wat elke keer een steeds wisselende glinstering van het frisse groen gaf. Onderweg heb ik twee keer de weg moeten vragen, een ANWB paddestoel gaf wel aan waar de ene richting naar toe ging, maar de tegenovergestelde richting werd niet vermeld en natuurlijk wou ik juist die kant op. Gelukkig kon ik twee dames die al op het fietspad waren vragen. Nou dat was eenvoudig, gewoon doorfietsen en dan om de roeibaan heen naar de stad. Bij de roeibaan gekomen fietste ik van ”start” naar “finisch”, halverwege gevraagd aan vissers of  ik bij het einde, de weg naar Groningen kon oppakken. Ja hoor dat kon, nou het kwam hier op neer dat ik aan de overzijde terug moest fietsen dus nu van “finish” naar de “start”, leuk ik heb de roeibaan twee keer afgelegd.  Of te wel ik heb 4000 meter voor de nop gefietst, nou is het laatste niet helemaal waar. Ik had dan niet het plaatje (in een leuk perspectief) van “finisch” naar “start” kunnen maken. Voor de vissers heeft het gesprekstof opgeleverd, hoe ze die”stadjer” een mooi ommetje hebben laten maken en mij een paar opgeblazen kuiten.

Terug naar mijn opdracht, ik heb paarden gezien, in weilanden en in het natuurgebied van Staatsbosbeheer Duurswold Rijpemaa. Een kudde schapen met de winterjas nog aan, arme dieren. Geiten op een heuvel, een bok die op de heuvel de wereld in keek van zo “wie doet mij wat”.

Na een kleine 35 kilometer terug in de stad, de foto’s bekeken en teruggekeken op een leuk fietstochtje, die de titel meekreeg “Rondom Meerstad”. Op mijn route: Middelbert, Engelbert, recreatiegebied Borgmeren, Harkstede, Woudbloem, Grunostrand kwam ik steeds reclame voor Meerstad tegen vandaar de titel.

I’d just like to outline that I have nothing against pop punk. It’s just that these bands are so whiny and crap that they should not have ‘punk’ in their genre name. Even if it is preceded by ‘pop’ or any terms implying that the music is more melodic.

Soms, als ik weemoedig word naar het eiland, bel ik ernaartoe.
‘Hoe gaat het met het zaaien?’ vraag ik.
‘Goed, ik heb heel veel vlamtomatenplanten gekocht,’ zei hij.
‘Vlamtomaten?’
‘Ja, met gele en groene strepen, weet je dat nog?’
Als ik in de vroege morgen over het veld keek, waren die tomaten de meest opvallende. Het leek alsof ze in de fik stonden. Ze waren prachtig.
‘En dit jaar hebben we heel erg veel courgette en melizanes. Hoe heet dat ook al weer in het Nederlands?’
‘Auberignes,’ zei ik.
‘Aubergines. En er zijn al appels en de druiven, maar die zijn nog klein, maar straks is alles groot. Ik verheug me op de koningsvijgen.’ Op de achtergrond hoorde ik de krekels.
‘En qua mest?’
‘Qua mest…tja, heel moeilijk dit jaar. Ik ben vijftien keer heen en weer naar de geitenberg gereden, maar er is gewoon niet zoveel dit jaar. Er zijn ook veel minder geiten dan vorig jaar.’
Als ik het eiland heel erg mis dan vraag ik onbenullige dingen die dan heel serieus opgevat worden.
‘En de restaurants, zijn die al open?’
‘Iedereen is open, ook Jimbo.’
‘Jim!’ schreeuwde ik. Jim was naam van een toeristen winkel aan de voet van de berg. De eigenaar heette Dimitris, dus in het Engels ‘Jim’ had hij besloten. Hij bleek verre familie te zijn, net zoals vrijwel iedereen op het eiland. Ik werd altijd vrolijk van Jim.
‘Die lieverd!’ riep hij. We moesten lachen, want Jim had een heel gek stemmetje.
Ik vroeg hem naar de koffie. Of hij nog goede koffiebonen heeft kunnen vinden.
‘Nee, ze hebben alleen drie jaar oude Lavazza, maar daar is al lucht bij gekomen. Dus ik moet afwachten wat ze brengen volgende maand. Ik hou me nu bezig met de olijfbomen. Ik zei tegen ze: “als jullie minder dan tweehonderd liter maken, dan zaag ik jullie allemaal om!” en ik denk dat ze luisteren dit jaar.’
‘Ik weet zeker dat ze luisteren,’ zei ik.

Vanavond hadden we in het dorp een bijeenkomst in de Mariakerk over de vergunningaanvraag voor een mestopslag van 1500 m3 even buiten het dorp zelf.  De aanvrager kwam uitleg geven omdat er veel weerstand in het dorp is.
De aanvraag is gedaan door een maatschap die 32 ha grond hier heeft liggen en de opslag beslaat een stuk terrein van 25 x 25 meter waarop dan een aarden wal zou komen van zo’n 2 meter hoog met daaromheen ook een hek van 1.80 hoog.  Daarbinnen komt het bassin te liggen, dat afgedekt wordt.
1500m3 is 40 vrachtwagens vol. Dat  zou in de winter in een dag of twee, drie naar de opslag gereden worden. Het betreft koeienmest die door een vergistingsinstallatie is gegaan, die vergisting is gebeurd op de boerderij van de maatschap.
Ik vond het wel een leerzame bijeenkomst want nu weet ik dat deze maatschap heel veel land heeft (zo’n 900 ha) met heel veel melkkoeien (350 stuks) die automatisch gemolken worden. Ze hebben bij het bedrijf sinds kort een biogasinstallatie waarin methaangas gemaakt wordt dat de dynamo aandrijft die stroom levert waarvan 80% (van die opgewekte stroom) terug geleverd wordt aan het energiebedrijf. Behalve mest worden er ook restanten groenten van supermarkten, slecht gras en maiz vergist.

Bij de boerderij hebben ze ook nog eens een opslag van 3000m3 voor de mest die vergist is.

Voor de koeien telen ze zelf mais en tarwe.  (Bij het woord mais zag je gezichten in de kerk betrekken, maar je kan niet verwachten dat een koeienboer aardappels gaat telen)
Mest mag maar 14 dagen per jaar over het land uitgereden worden en in die periode is er een logistiek probleem, om de mest naar het land te vervoeren, vandaar dat ze de opslag bij het land hier willen hebben.

Zo ver zo goed, het enige rare aan het verhaal is toch wel een beetje dat het land te koop staat, waarom dan toch een mestsilo?
Volgens de woordvoerder van de maatschap wordt het land niet verkocht en wij -het dorp- zullen kijken of het inderdaad van de markt gehaald gaat worden. Waar de mensen hier bang voor zijn is dat ze opgescheept zullen worden met die vieze varkens- of kippenmest uit andere delen van het land, die mest lusten ze hier niet. Koeienmest en de bijbehorende geur zijn ze wel gewend.   

Het zou slim zijn als er in de vergunning zou komen te staan dat er alleen mest afkomstig van koeien mag komen en bovendien dat het alleen voor gebruikt op dat stuk land is, want voordat je het weet zit je ineens toch opgescheept met een mest-overslagstation en dat willen we toch echt niet.

Zaterdag heel mooi weer. Koolveldje Ontdaan van resten welke op de composthoop zijn beland.  Ruben en Anne in de weer met de kruiwagen. Philippe, niet in het minst gehinderd cq opgehouden door de 82 jarige buurman schuin- rechts heeft het koolbed omgespit.  Moet nog wat fijngemaakt worden. Samen 2 kruiwagens mest uitgestrooid op koolbed. Ruben en Anne hebben nog wat paadjes vrijgemaakt en het grasveldje van Renske nog wat verder bijgeknipt met de schaar. Ook de Buxus heeft een nieuwe coupe.
