“It is an annual event at the Met Museum in New York City that kicks off the Costume Institute spring exhibition. The Met Gala, or Met Ball as it is also called, has a theme that goes with the exhibition, and antendees usually incorporate the theme with their outfits. The event raises money for the Met’s Costume Institute. Which is a permanent exhibit in the museum where thousands (like over 35,000) historical costumes and accessories were displayed. So the pieces are stored and exhibited about two times a year. Each exhibit follows a designer or an era of fashion.”*

This year’s theme was PUNK and people showed up in a variety of garments ranging from not punk to punk to what?? lol! here are my favorites of the night.

I couldn’t see how Nina Dobrev was going to top her 2012 Met Gala gown, which got her into my top 15 best dressed looks of last year. And she didn’t this year. However, that did not stop Nina from still stealing the limelight away from A-list movie stars, cos she delivered a knock-out punch in a Monique Lhuillier black mesh gown/jumpsuit. She was cool, she was stunning – and Nina once again proves herself worthy of a spot on the list. A best dressed contender at the Met Ball once again.

The Met Gala will be streaming live on ModaOperandi.com, Vogue.com, Samsung.com, MetMuseum.org on May 6 at 7 p.m. Moda Operandi’s Spotlight program will offer shoppers the chance to grab red carpet looks. The website’s co-founder Lauren Santo Domingo said in a release that “Events like the Met Gala offer some of the most spectacular fashion moments because they inspire experimentation… We are thrilled to be able to provide women with access to the fashions from one of the world’s most thrilling red carpet events.”

The estimate of number of looks to be available online the day after the event is around 10. Designers can include but are not limited to Nina Ricci, Wes Gordon, Rodarte, and Balmain. Got the money? Get in on this event.

I thought it would be a lot of fun to do a little tracking of their career movements and gossip-worthy moments and put them up here for you all to have a look at.

So, lets have a look at some of their recent activities and see what we think:

Amanda Bynes after the arrest.

In April 2012, Amanda Bynes was arrested for DUI while leaving a club in West Hollywood. Sources allege that she attempted to pass a cop car and sideswiped it.

She was then pulled over by police and was deemed unfit to drive.

This arrest came amidst reports that Amanda had been hitting the Hollywood party scene up very frequently, with reports of her leaving various clubs incredibly wasted.

This was the first time Amanda Bynes had been featured in mainstream media since the release of her last film Easy A.

Meanwhile, to J-Law:

Jennifer Lawrence on the cover of Glamour.

In April 2012, Jennifer Lawrence was riding on a wave of success after making her mainstream breakthrough in the film adaptation of The Hunger Games. Critics had lauded her performance as Katniss Everdeen. The film has now also amassed more than $6 billion dollars.

This was the second film for which Jennifer Lawrence has critical acclaim within two years. The previous being Winter’s Bone – which she was nominated for an Academy Award for.

Jennifer Lawrence was also the cover model for Glamour Magazine for April 2012.

So, in April Amanda Bynes made her way back into mainstream media by getting arrested drunk, and Jennifer Lawrence became a household name for her great acting in a fantastic film. I see.

Style blogs report on how stunning Jennifer Lawrence looked at the Met 2013 Gala.

This is just off the back of her Academy Award win for best actress in Silver Linings Playbook.

This also comes just off RollingStone deeming her ‘the most talented young actress in America’ and Time naming her one of the 100 most influential people.

So those are the comparison of the two of them and their recent movements. When comparing the two of them, it actually makes the whole unraveling of Amanda seem pretty ridiculous. It is quite easy for us to feel sorry for her and rationalise her Lohan-esque antics, but when put side by side in comparison with someone like Jennifer Lawrence, it is much easier to see the bullshit.

Let me give you some more information here: Amanda Bynes is almost 27, Jennifer Lawrence is only 22, Jennifer Lawrence has been nominated for an Academy Award twice, Amanda Bynes has been in the acting game since 1996 and has never been nominated for a serious award. If Jennifer Lawrence can accomplish all this by only 22, and still come across as normal and in control of her life, then why the fuck can’t Amanda take ownership of her shit instead of posting nasty topless photos to her twitter and actually do something of relevance?

  Even though the Met Gala was last week, we still can’t stop talking about the fashion crowd and their controversial looks, punk or not they were definitely buzz worthy. Hailee Steinfeld impressed me at the Met Ball this year, as she struck the perfect balance of age-appropriateness and sophisticated glam. Dressed in a tea-length Donna Karan dress, the punk elements in her look came via the bouquets of gold safety pins embroidered on her white dress – which I thought was very clever and classy. It certainly shows how punk can be turned from chaos to couture. She added glittery gold accessories to match the safety pins on her frock, and completed her beauty look with dark emerald eyeshadow and  a glossy lip, with side swept locks for a punk-girly feel. One word: Bravo.

Naomie Harris was one of the many who ignored the memo to dress punk at the Met Gala. Nevertheless, she looks so beautiful in her Donna Karan chiffon gown that I have to put her in the list. The gown, with its many shades of blues and purples and its divine draping, is absolutely gorgeous. I especially love the feathered train. Will this be my best dressed at the Met Ball? No, because she didn’t follow the theme, but Naomie sure comes close to perfection in this gown, and gets herself a worthy spot on the list.

Sienna Miller was another one who embraced the punk theme, and turned up in an array of gold studs and spikes, courtesy of her very punk-like Burberry biker jacket and spiked headband, which she expertly paired with an understated Burberry white gown. I’m glad she didn’t go for an overkill of punk elements (cough SJP cough), but still managed to look effortlessly beautiful and on-theme at the Met gala. The Burberry girls did well, and she was one of the best dressed for me.

It’s hard to judge a good Met Ball look when the theme is punk – what I looked for was punk that transited smoothly from chaos to couture, as the invite suggests. In other words, high fashion with a touch of punk as its base inspiration. Rooney Mara nailed it with her trademark romantic lace Givenchy dress, that was updated with punk elements via gold zippers and that dark lipstick. The gown does seem very familiar on Rooney – we’ve seen her wear dresses like this a hundred times before, but there’s no doubt she brought quite a lovely goth-punk vibe to the event, that was also very close to her personality. After all, punk is all about embracing oneself. Kudos to Rooney for doing that.

Hathaway stunned with her short blonde hair and a sexy semi-sheer gown from her favorite designer, Valentino.

While fashion forward Richie opted for grey slicked back locks, a deep burgundy lip, and a long floral embroidered dress from Topshop. Her look was so sickening that pop princess, Rihanna, took to Twitter to express her sentiments.

And then there was Kim Kardashian. While Kanye West looked great in his Givenchy suit, Kim looked a bit awkward in her super tight and overly floral gown.

What were your favorite looks of the night?

THE WORST 

Kim Kardashian walked the red carpet in a Riccardo Tisci floral dress. Pulling off a floor-lengthed floral dress that hugs your body is hard for almost anyone to do, so in her defense she was brave enough to try something like this even during pregnancy. Kim was criticized none the less, some blogs even compared her to Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire! 

Madonna showed up in a studded plaid blazer, pumps, but no pants on! Some say this outfit was just too inappropriate for the event. 

Elle Fanning attempted to go for a cool tie-dye look. The dress wasn’t the worst part but her make-up was a little over done. 

And last but not least Sofia Coppola and Marc Jacobs. The Huffington Post compared their outfits to pajamas. Better luck next year! 

THE BEST 

Rooney Mara in Givenchy. Mara pulled off an elegant look on the red carpet that stayed true to her style. She had the perfect balance between sour and sweet with a long white lace dress and deep red lips. She wasn’t too revealing and not too conservative but just right. 

Doutzen Kroes walked the red carpet black leather and lace dressed that was very fit her figure perfectly. You can never go wrong with black, it’s flattering, elegant and went with this years theme. Emmy Rossum walked the carpet in Donna Karan and a smokey eye. Once again, this is another flattering dress as it flows perfectly down her shape. There is just the right amount of sequins and a classy v-neck. 

Miranda Kerr in Michael Kors. She rocked the black chocker neckline along with her beautiful red lips. This was a perfect modern twist on a classic looks. 

Last weekend I spent at home (Columbus, Ohio) visiting my husband and family. It was a great trip home (as usual!) Celebrated my mom’s birthday with an afternoon shopping trip to German Village (adorable village on the outskirts of downtown Columbus) as well as dinner at a new restaurant at Easton Town Center – Texas de Brazil. The waiters, dressed as Brazilian gauchos, bring around large skewers of a variety of meats. A lot of fun – and totally delicious! Highly recommend!

Last weekend when I went home, Matt surprised me with this Alison Rose shirt that I’ve wanted for a long time! If I wasn’t already totally in love with Mindy Kaling, I am so even more now. She KILLED it at the annual Met Gala. She rocked a custom Lela Rose gown, complete with an Andy Lifshutz necklace and Tonya Hawks bag. I loved, loved, loved her makeup. I think she nailed it with the dark lipstick. Not bad for her first Met Gala!! In other Mindy news, if you’re not watching The Mindy Project or haven’t read her book, do it. Both are hilarious. Can you tell I’m a huge fan of hers?

Soon after claiming Tom Brady “sees ghosts” due to an unwillingness to take hits from defenders, Steelers safety Ryan Clark recently went over the top in his praise of New England’s quarterback.

While doing analyst work for ESPN last week, Clark answered a question about the toughest quarterback he faced:

“Ghosts or no ghosts, I have to go with the greatest living American, and that’s Tom Brady,” Clark said. “You know, I said what I said, and I do believe it, and it’s true. But when this guy has the opportunity to set up and throw the ball to his receivers, there’s nobody better at pinpointing guys out and making plays for his team. “I mean, he’s a field general, he’s a winner, he’s a competitor, and Tom Brady, he’s given us some hard times.”

By the way, who is the greatest living American? It has to be a former president, right?

Well, according to a 2007 article in The Atlantic, that distinction goes to Microsoft wizard Bill Gates. 

The highest ranking athlete on the poll? Muhammad Ali at number eight.

Anyhow, I can’t put Brady at the front of the list of greatest living Americans because of this photo from Monday’s Met Gala:

The “greatest living American” hosts Pittsburgh on November 3.

This camo monstrosity appeared at her wedding this week when she got married to Sugar Bear. Not only does this hideous dress make her look like an overgrown tree, but those trainers and white socks aren’t exactly suitable wedding attire. Seriously, what was she thinking?
