We live in a society of technology that is growing exponentially and schools need to keep up. This i

We live in a society of technology that is growing exponentially and schools need to keep up. This is necessary if we want to provide students with the best possible education and prepare them for the future. According to the US Department of Education (DOE) 2003 study “Technology is now considered by most educators and parents to be an integral part of providing a high-quality education (Ertmer, P.2005).”

With Web .02, there is so much technology available for students, anyone can now log into university and college level online classes and lectures (Bogle, 2008). Student can also create Wikis which offer a great way for students to do group/cooperative learning assignments. The other benefit of social learning technology is that it allows for a person to actually participate in real-time. Today students can participate in technology and learning experiences that previously only a few people had access to before, such as the online telescope http://faulkes-telescope.com. Students can log in from anywhere in the world and share what they have learned with other students in these types of programs.

However, I think one of the biggest obstacles is that often students know more than the teachers and teachers need to get the training to keep up with the ever-changing technology and their students. According to the Bogle article the common barriers for teachers in regards to technology include: lack of experience, familiarity with applications and their purpose, reservations about the relevance of emerging technology for education and most notable lack of access to support and expert consulting. It is imperative that teacher get the necessary training to keep up with the changing technology. Perhaps providing teacher with pay incentives to get teachers to take the time and keep current in technology.

Teachers also need to make sure students know and understand what school policies are for appropriate online behavior. Ultimately incorporating technology in the class is the responsibility of the teacher. It is also our job to make sure students know and understand school policy in regard to “digital citizenship.” It is important that students learn proper etiquette when using technology for their personal safety and the legal requirements of the school, especially with all the social networking sites available (Bailey & Tweed, 2004). Students need to understand that all postings of any sort on the internet, is now public domain and their post doesn’t go away. They also need to understand how inappropriate use of the internet could have a negative effect on them personally and/or professionally down the road.

A senior student I was helping with a project, ended up showing me something I did not know about creating power point slides. I think this goes back to the students knowing more about technology than most of the teachers. Today’s students have grown up with technology and are very motivated by it. This brought to mind how we learn so much more when we are the teacher. Perhaps allowing our students, at least at the secondary level to teach or share their knowledge of technology for extra credit could be very valuable to all, especially the teacher.

This class has made me think more about how technology can be incorporated into the classroom. I now require my freshmen to use word processing for their final drafts of papers. I also recently came up with a lesson plan that required research for their papers. Although this is pretty basic stuff, at least it is a start and I hope to find other ways I can incorporate technology outside of word processing into their writing.

I enjoyed doing the voice threads; they were a nice alternative to writing a reflection or blog to comment on the readings. This is something I am thinking about adding into one of my lesson plans for my freshmen English class. I think having my students do a voice thread as part of a larger lesson will be a nice way to include technology in the class. This would fit nicely along with an upcoming lesson I am planning on doing with my students on persuasive writing. I am thinking of having each student do a tread on their topic and then have each student comment as to whether they agree or disagree with their peers arguments. I have eight students in one of my freshmen classes and they love to talk. This will be a good fit for them and I feel very comfortable with this technology.

Finally, I have to say this was a good class but, I think would have gotten more out of this class it the class itself would have been live where you could see and try using technology where I could see how to actually use it and apply it to classroom learning. Personally, I get more out of the hands on learning and using technology as opposed to reading about it. I think if we would have had at least a technology/computer lab were we could come in and could try out the technology, would have meant more to me. I also feel that actually using technology in an environment where there was support and lessons geared toward using it, there would be more carryover into the classroom. I did enjoy our jing assignment and I have attached the link to this here.

In the Voice of a Minor Saint

(This review is part of the Read Write Poem Virtual Book Tour!)

I’ll be the first person to admit that I don’t go out of my way to read books of poetry that often: there’s rarely time, I already have ten thousand other things to read, it’s taking a chance on something you might hate, etc. But more often than not, you’re pleasantly surprised to have discovered a poet with a unique and powerful voice, and Sarah J. Sloat, speaking “In the Voice of a Minor Saint”, is no exception. She knits together 22 snapshots of life infused with her own presence (counting up, I think only one of them isn’t written in the first person) and an ethereal physicality that gives them all the real-but-unreal dreaminess that lets the reader in. Her expertise in language, structure, and theme shine throughout the book and leave every moment downright interesting.

First, the trappings: let me go on record as saying right off, I loved the title. A “minor saint”! It’s such an unfamiliar persona, but the annals of hagiography are filled with their curious stories, and I was immediately interested to see what kinds of things a minor saint had to say. The title poem of the collection says: “On approach, I notice how / objects grow and contours blear. / That’s what comes of nearness. / I have an ear for the specific“, which is certainly true of the poems inside: Sloat picks out images and lets us, more often than not, connect from them to broad, significant thoughts on our own.

Her writing style is rather elegant as well: it’s wonderful to see punctuation and capitalization working together with well-placed line breaks, to see words like “lachrymose” and “whirligig” pop up, and to see phrases like “cunnilingus and the hydrogen bomb.” I suppose most of the pieces would be classified as free verse, but Sloat clearly shows her mastery of form with a pair of ghazals that are perfectly executed in meter and sound. (Favorite lines from the second one, Ghazal of the Bright Body: “Wind flew on a blue bicycle of rain, / took the streets, sidewalks, and sun with it. / A book of valentines lies near my bed. / Some afternoons I warm my gun with it.“) And so many of the poems are rich with rhythm, alliteration and internal rhyme; they are a joy to read aloud.

As for the meat of it, the thematic tissue, I was quite satisfied with the collection. (Where do poets get their ideas?) In “God Have Pity on the Smell of Gasoline”, we have a heartfelt paean to a personified and underappreciated scent we all know too well; in “Humidity”, we read about the author’s love/hate relationship with a sweltering day. My favorite poem in the entire collection was a number called “Curtains” that starts off: “For weeks I have been waking up / in the living room curtains, / their shrug and frump, / and there / I have not met a single person.” Now that is how to open a story, and the rest of it follows suit. Another concept piece that turned out well is “Naked, Come Shivering”: as far as I can deduce, each line (including the title) was chosen from a different French poem, and expertly laced together to form an entirely new piece. Not sure if that’s an old Surrealist trick or not, but I’m sure Andre Breton (who donates two of the lines) would be proud.

To be fair, I must discuss the few issues I had with the book, and really they’re personal quibblings. A couple of the pieces were the old standards of body poem, lost love poem, etc. Not that they were unreadable, and certainly they’re important for all poets to write, but they just didn’t have the same energy to them that the others did. And it was very rare that any of Sloat’s pieces felt too long, but when they did, it was because she was tackling a theme that was either too big for this candy box, or drawing us too completely into the real world, alienating the reader a bit. There wasn’t a way to really predict this, either: for better or worse, the poems I felt indifferent to were right up against the ones I would totally marry.

I walked away from the book with a desire to know more about the life that had produced these visions. It felt a little bit like the tarot: 22 poems for 22 major arcana, following the protagonist on their journey through a series of experiences rife with symbolism. What hints does that give about the author; what is she the patron minor saint of? Could we arrange these poems like a fortune-teller to uncover truths in our own lives? Sloat skirts cleverly around identification and the specifics of reality beyond the “miniature existence” she assigns herself in the title poem, which is a method I completely approve of. It gives her the freedom to speak conversationally and authoritatively about these jewel-like visions, while drawing her audience in and leaving them at every turn unsure that these did not, in fact, happen to them.

And according to her bio, she is from New Jersey originally. I completely approve of this also.

So, you should first check out her website at The Rain in My Purse. Then you should trundle over to Tilt Press, where the collection is available for a very-affordable eight smackeroos. And if I haven’t convinced you, you can read another review at The Literary Bohemian, or check back in at the other dates in the tour (listed below) for more RWP opinions. But why wait? Maybe you should just take that chance and see where the words lead you.

The next review on the tour is by Dave Bonta at Via Negativa next week, 12/15. To be followed by David Moolten (1/5/10), Dave Jarecki (1/12) — how many Daves do we have?? — Jill Crammond Wickham (1/19), and Ren Powell finishing on 1/26.

Ugh, I feel bad that I’m taking this valuable time and space to simply post an announcement

Ugh, I feel bad that I’m taking this valuable time and space to simply post an announcement… anyway, I decided yesterday that I need to take a break for a few days. There’s a bunch of components to this: I’m sick at the moment (nothing serious, just miserable), but at the same time still have to do classes and plenty of schoolwork (with final projects in full swing), and all the other assorted things in life. My Muse is pretty effectively short-circuited. I am still posting daily on Poetic Asides, if you care to see my work over there, but I don’t think I have the time and energy to maintain that November challenge and keep up with different postings here on the blog, so I think I’ll be quiet until about Saturday. I can conceive of having things done by Saturday. And then soon after that, it’ll be Thanksgiving, and I’ll need to have something to do anyway aside from being in a turkey coma.

Anyway, that’s all I wanted to say at the moment. I’ll check out blogs/post comments when I can, but really I need to focus on other things for the rest of the week, much as I’d rather be here. But it’s tough to force inspiration when you’ve got migraines and coughing and stacks of research to get through… sigh. :\

So for the first time since this blog’s inception, I am not going to be posting a poem (gasp!)

So for the first time since this blog’s inception, I am not going to be posting a poem (gasp!)… because, with the exception of three days or so, I’ve posted every day for a month, I think, and quite frankly, I need to relax a little bit. Midterms are this week and next week, so I’m going to keep myself to the usual Monday-Wednesday-Friday prompts, and if anything else poemworthy happens, I’ll do what I can to get it up here. November I’ll be taking up the Poetic Asides chapbook challenge, so it’ll be back to poem-every-day mode; must ease up a little and recharge.

But in the meantime, I want to thank everyone that’s been so fantastically supportive of my blogging and poeticizing these past, erm, almost-5 months. Especially yesterday’s poem, that took a lot out of me. Someday I’m going to try to be more and more open (perhaps even letting you guys know my real name?), but I figured I could start now. See, it seems that Danielle over at me, in⋅com⋅plete (if you haven’t checked out her fantastic stuff already, please go do it now!) has awarded me with a Kreative Blogger Award type thing, which I am to pass on to seven people. But before that, I’m supposed to give seven interesting facts about myself. Here are a few:

For someone who’s a career introvert, I somehow managed in college to be involved, in various ways, in nearly 40 theatre shows. Acting, directing, tech, production, design, marketing… I’ve done it all.

I have never eaten grilled cheese. The whole notion smacks of anathema.

There was a time when I could name every country in the world and their capitals, but I think revolutions and Wikipedia have probably made me a bit lazy. I need to practice Central Africa.

Guys who speak other languages make me weak in the knees.

I was the only person in my college class (of 2200) to graduate with three majors and a minor, far as I’m aware.

This has only occurred to me recently, but I am physically unable to fall asleep without shifting position at least once. I can start on the right, the left, or the back, but until it changes in some way, I lie awake and annoyed.

One of the few visible body features I take pride in is the color of my eyes. They look like storm clouds.

Okay, so now I have to pass this on to seven more people (who then are supposed to pass it to seven more, et cetera), but I really hate picking favorites. Rest assured that if you’re in my blogroll, I find your poetry wonderful, fascinating, and of course creative, but I’m going to specifically set this for people who consistently experiment and play around with forms and stuff (since I love doing that myself). To that end, I recommend you discover:

Barbara at Briarcat’s Thicket: as she is a fellow Poetic Asider, RWPer, WordPresser, and Libra, I find we have a lot in common. But mostly I love how she’s not afraid to take risks, and constantly produces whimsical, sassy, funny, thoughtful, and lushly beautiful work.

Bryan at Poetic Grin: probably the first poetry blog I found online, and still one of my favorites. He writes with astonishing eloquence and pulls no punches with his subject matter, two things I admire greatly. And he’s getting big time, from what I see.

Elle at Veritas Ex Logos: her most recent epic requires an extended period of time where you need to cut yourself off from all intrusions and just be with the poem. I wish she posted more frequently.

Karen at Keeping Secrets: I only recently discovered Karen’s blog, but… wow. Each new experience is a revelation in beauty, and it takes a different shape every time.

Kaye at Old Mossy Moon: again, I wish she posted more often (why does life have to interrupt poetry??), because her stuff is charming and wonderful. She’s posted a couple Halloween epics lately that have been livening up my blog wanderings.

Rachel at The Waxing Moon: not only is she a sport about experimenting with form, and crafting excellent poems, but she’s also a class photographer. Her combination of images, words, and bits of life makes for an enchanting mix.

Vic at verba volant scripta manet: Vic’s work reminds me a lot of W.S. Merwin’s, but with fewer rainforests and maybe more capitalization. His style is very unique, but always leads you at a reasonable pace from a commonly understood image to the far shores of thought. Check him out.

And then I designed this little conveniently-transparent-background image to go with it… feel free to use it or not.

A man is playing the bagpipes down the street, as he often does at sunset. I took a break in the middle of this post to go introduce myself at last, and that makes me proud. See you guys tomorrow…!

The meeting on Wednesday was pretty damn awesome. Lots of good people sitting around, talking about the gardens and food justice! And Margaret provided some damn good chips and salsa.

Here’s most of what we talked about:

1. Garden Winterization – details below

2. We’re getting a durable sign for the gardens. Thank you, Listn!

3. Getting a small shed/tool box for the gardens.

4. Applications for leadership positions due in 2 weeks – the positions will last us through the spring. See an earlier post for descriptions of the positions.

5. We talked a lot about using media and online communications to our advantage, to streamline communication and excite people.

I’m sure there were other things, but these seem like the main discussion points.

**

First thing’s first: Getting ready for winter.

The main winterization activities will take place on Sunday, October 18 from 3:00-5 or 6. They will mostly include ripping up plants and spreading some manure.

If you want to get started on this early, Margaret and other SPROUT members will be working in the gardens on Friday from 9-noon, to prepare them for the full winterization on Sunday.

Be sure to bring:

WARM clothes – it’s been super cold lately
Work Gloves
Good work shoes

After the winterization, we will have a SPROUT meal at Margaret’s house. We’ll be making home-made pizza, and probably some soup or something else that’s warm. Bring your own beverage.

Please RSVP if you want to attend the winterization, and if you want to attend the meal afterward! We need to know how many ingredients to get and plan for.

I know I’m really excited about this. Getting to spend time with amazing people? Priceless.

**

Time for some meta-blogging.

Several new features have appeared on the blog this week. The first, and most important, is the Calendar of Events page. It’s really just a timeline – but it lists cool events/activities happening in/around the Twin Cities, as well as sweet conference opportunities that are coming up.
Also, the hamlinesprout gmail account now has a wordpress account, so you don’t have to worry about making your own account. Details on that are in the “How to Become an Author” section.

There will probably be more changes made to the blog as we go along, to make it a better resource. It’s sort of being used as the SPROUT website, at the moment.

Hope you all are having a wonderful day, and I hope to see you on Friday/Sunday!

Fuck the Fuck yeah! Suit up Uncle Fuckers, Cuz its all about NPH, todayz.

Howz about a little Monday Meta-blog about Neil Patrick Harris?

Yup, some dedicated blogger has carved out a little slice of cyberspace (gawd, are we still using that term? I am such an old man. Do the kids even know what that means?) in homage to everyone’s favorite multi-talented, out, gay, sassy, hilarious comeback kid-actor.

…In case you are an old man like me, and have been totally snoozing (snoozy? toats!) for the past several years, your ol’ pal Doogie Howser (yes, the “M.D.”) is killing it in the prime time and among the nerd/geek/whedon/buffy blogosphere. I believe his words to People Magazine were

“I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love.”

Lets hear it for very content gay men!

Okay, so- Start with his antics on Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog (where he plays the title character), note his slam dunk contribution to the ensemble cast of How I Met Your Mother (which includes Whedon’s superstar Alyson Hannigan who played Willow in some other show), and oh yeah, he like hosted the Emmy Awards and the Tony Awards (or something)- so like what rock have you been under since the Doogie Days, eh?

Which is all to say: Fuck Yeah!!! Neil Patrick Harris!!

Its insipid.
Its fucking hilarious.

Greetings. I am about to leave for the Toledo District of Belize. I am so excited right now. It is going to be stupid hot/humid and I don’t even care. I may have restricted access to the internet (or…about the same access to the internet…considering…whatevs) so you may not being hearing from me for a bit. Relieved? Thought that might be the case.

Anways, before I left I wanted to share this little bit of small-weird-world even on the internet. You may not find this nearly as cool/spooky/weird as I do but then again this is my blog and not yours. Not yours, not yours, not yours.

It's a small, weird, beautiful world.

Imagine if there is another person in this world interested in “water Belize” and “Care Bears, Crabs, and Bimbo Submarinos” pops up. I love that. Heh. I wonder if this made that imaginary person “Remove this alert.”

Also, you will notice that I have two tabs open for “Picasa Help.” Take note, Google. Take note. This program has a lot of potential. Hire me and I’ll help you. I work cheap and would bring delicious snacks to the office, I’d even share them with other people. I keed. I keed. Seriously though, job. Yes, no? I have my LinkedIn profile along the right side of my page. Check it.

I’ve decided to switch back to using WordPress.com for a while, and domain forwarding to it. So, all the links and stuff should still work. Only problem in the switch over was that my tags and categories got messed up so I’ll have to spend an hour or two just going through all of them to fix them up.

For those that don’t know, wordpress.org is the open source website, where you can run the software yourself. WordPress.com is a commercial arm (they have to make money somehow) where you pay for certain services, and have a lot less freedom.

I decided to “downgrade” because there’s blatantly something wrong with my server. I don’t think it’s anything on my part, more on the part of my VPS providers (since their websites were down too). After weeks of slow loading, and database crashes, I’ve decided to just go self hosted for a while.

The blog should be way faster now, and always work. Downside is it cost me £7 to have the domain forwarded. And I can no longer installed plugins, or themes. I can only use the ones WordPress.com offers. I can’t show ads the way I used to (only to first time visitors, on certain single pages/posts). I wasn’t making much money off them anyway, so it’s not a big loss. And I’m a little worried with putting my information in someone else’s business. I’m really hoping I’m not surrendering any copyrights to this data by putting it here (I’ve not read up enough yet).

Other than it being managed by someone else, I don’t see any up side to WP.com. I’ll be switching out as soon as I get a better server.

Could be the DNS playing catch up still, but it doesn’t look like I can use my OpenID any more…
