For those who might not know what a “supergroup” is, it’s essentially a collection of members from various bands who collaborate for a number of songs or even a full album.  Typically the closest we’ll get to a supergroup is a side project announced by a member of another band.  Take for instance the recently announced side group that will involve members from Anthrax, Every Time I Die and Fall Out Boy (honestly, I’m scared to see/hear the results), that’s a close example of a supergroup.  But for someone like me who tries to get into more, similar bands after hearing an album or two by another, it’s easy to dream for a certain collaboration.  So this is what I’m going to bring you, my own personal dream group, if only for one album.

Vocals: Ronnie James Dio (Black Sabbath/Heaven and Hell, Dio, Elf, Rainbow)

Anyone who knows heavy metal has to know Ronnie James Dio, and not just for the song “Holy Diver.”  On a few of Black Sabbath’s albums, Dio actually assumed the role of frontman instead of Ozzy Osbourne, leading to the foundation of Heaven and Hell as a bit of a side band.  Dio is often credited as the one who invented the devil horns hand sign, a near daily gesture given off by most metal fans.  I was fortunate enough to see Heaven and Hell during the Judas Priest-headlined Metal Masters tour from 2008, additionally featuring Motorhead and Testament.  The entire six hour show was a blast and to my (pleasant) surprise, Dio happened to be the strongest vocalist there.  Thus began my true appreciation for this power metal vocalist.  Dio has recently turned 67 and he’s still able to push impressive notes out that can put other singers to shame.  Unfortunately, it’s been confirmed that he has stomach cancer and is currently in the hospital.  Despite this, Dio has shown great strength and variety to his vocals and it’s always a joy to hear him on a song.

Guitars: Glenn Tipton (Judas Priest, Glenn Tipton)

Those who have hung out with me know that Judas Priest have been my favorite band for as long as I’ve been into metal.  They’re the band that served as my real introduction to the genre and even with a relatively mixed discography; their great songs and still solid live performances have left them (mostly) unchallenged by other artists.  A big part of why the band is so enjoyable is because the two lead guitarists, Glenn Tipton and Kenneth “K.K.” Downing.  These two essentially do trade-off guitar duals during solo sections, with most of their more impressive ones being on the excellent Painkiller album.  Though it could almost be argued as a toss-up between the two, I’ve always preferred the solos Tipton has done more work in; that and his solo album, Baptizm of Fire showed he’s not too bad on his own (save for the vocals).

Guitars: Jonathan Donais (Shadows Fall)

Shadows Fall are a band that get frowned upon quite a bit, mostly because they’re a metalcore band and many people insist Brian Fair is a lousy vocalist.  But to be honest, they aren’t all that bad (and neither is Fair).  Sure, nothing they’ve released after The Art of Balance has hit as high but they’re released some fairly good material.  Even those who don’t like the band tend to admit the guitars are pretty good and this is part of why I think Jonathan Donais would be a good second guitar player for a supergroup.  Now, there are plenty of other more talented guitar players out there, but I think Donais would be best suited as a mix between rhythm guitar player and supporting soloist (Tipton would be dominant but Donais would have his fair share too).  If I wanted the most insane guitar combination I’d probably pick Marty Friedmand and Yngwie Malmsteen.  But I simply want a strong guitar duo and I do believe Donais could work well with Tipton for this.  He’s between good and great, with guitar riffs and solos that usually impress, but never feel overwhelming or without some form of flow to maintain consistencies in the songs.

Bass: Greg Christian (Testament)

Bass players don’t tend to get much recognition, even in the metal community.  What’s most unfortunate, however, is that there’s actually a valid reason: there aren’t many great bassists out there to stand out.  But when you find a talented person on the bass guitar, you’ll definitely be able to tell the difference in the music more times than not.  While I was inclined to put ICS Vortex (recently fired from Dimmu Borgir), he was never given much legroom outside of his vocal sections.  Even so, Greg Christian from Testament has proved himself a more than competent bass player over the years.  Many of the songs Testament have done include a strong use of bass, with the most popular being the intro to “Souls of Black.”  And after hearing more of what the band has to offer, it becomes more and more abundantly clear how great Christian could fit into just about any metal band, especially a more aggressive one.

Drums: Nicholas Barker (Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth)

Similar to Jonathan Donais and, to a lesser extent, Glenn Tipton, Nicholas Barker is a similar example of a musician who’s quite talented but isn’t quite in the overzealous territory.  I’m most familiar with Barker as the drummer for a chunk of Dimmu Borgir’s discography (yet another band that takes a lot of heat).  If you want a proper idea of what this drummer can do, give “Blessings Upon the Throne of Tyranny” a listen and you’ll get a good idea of his talents.  Though the more talented Jan Axel “Hellhammer” Blomberg replaced Barker for 2007’s In Sorte Diaboli (ironically, the band’s weakest overall effort), the latter has still given the band some impressive contributions and it would be wonderful to continue to see his talents put to good use.

A “nem tartjuk magunkat keresztény bandának, de a tagok nagyrésze az” szindrómás banda emocore-t játszik, mely nem lenne túlságosan kiemelkedő, viszont az ütős tiszta vokál, és az egész kellemes zenei alap miatt hatalmas jövő előtt állnak a srácok, az biztos. Valami olyasmit kell elképzelni, mint a Dance Gavin Dance, egy bétaverziós Jonny Craig-el. Elsőként az “Our Raptured Heart” című számukat érdemes meghallgatni.

Abel

Bár eleinte lemezismertetőben is meg akartam emlékezni a Dreamt Music nagy reménységeiről, viszont ez elmaradt, így hát legalább egy mazsolázó erejéig emlékezzünk meg az ambient és indie-rock határmezsgyéjén táncoló trióról, akinek a The Honest Love EP-je már elérhető a boltokban. Szenvedélyes, és őszinte, leginkább a My Epic jobb pillanatait idéző zene, szintén erőesn ajánlott.

Doubting Benefit

Nem tagadhatják le a srácok, hogy sok Saosin-t hallgattak, viszont kellemesen lopják a nagytestvér ötleteit, nem kevés saját ötlettel előrukkolva. Az ‘A Saint Is Just A Sinner’ néven futó EP-jük eddig nem aratott nagy sikert, mindenesetre ez nem a srácokon múlott.

27.11.2009 – Chemnitz, Bunker

Weiter geht’s mit der Livemusik in diesem Monat. Dieses Wochenende stand Gama Bomb auf dem Programm. Vor kurzem hatte ich mir ja das aktuelle Album heruntergeladen, als ich mitbekommen habe, dass die Jungs praktisch direkt hier vor der Haustür spielen, musste ich natürlich unbedingt hin.

Als ich ankam, musste ich mich allerdings erst mal wundern, ob ich überhaupt auf der richtigen Veranstaltung bin – der Bunker war voller Emos und Deathcore-Kids. Ein großer Teil davon schien mir noch nichtmal volljährig zu sein. Offensichtlich waren die wegen Shoot on Marrow da. Ich glaube, ich erwähnte bereits ab und an, dass ich Metalcore nicht mag. Das hat sich auch durch diesen Auftritt nicht geändert. Der Beginn war noch recht annehmbar, mit einem ausführlichen melodischen Instrumental-Intro, ansonsten war’s aber nicht weiter bemerkenswert. Der Sänger baute hin und wieder Pig Squeals ein, zum Glück aber so leise, dass es kaum auffiel (ich hasse diesen Quatsch), eines der anderen Bandmitglieder durfte schrägen Klargesang beisteuern. Ansonsten habe ich Breakdowns schon mal besser gehört, die waren hier irgendwie ein bisschen holprig. Wenn schon Breakdowns, dann aber knackiger und mit mehr Bums. Vielleicht war das ja der Grund, dass sich nur eine Windmühle vor der Bühne einfand.

Nach diesem Auftritt wurde das Publikum offenbar komplett ausgewechselt – die Kids waren nicht mehr zu sehen, stattdessen fanden sich jede Menge Kuttenträger zur Darbietung von Gama Bomb ein. Nicht nur durch die traditionelle Tracht der Fans, sondern erst recht durch die Musik konnte man sich in die 80er zurückversetzt fühlen. Sehr klassischen Thrash Metal gab es auf die Ohren. Bei der “Tales from the Grave in Space”-CD war das einzige, was mich ein bisschen gestört hat, der sehr hohe Speed Metal-mäßige Gesang, deshalb konnte ich erfreut zur Kenntnis nehmen, dass die Vocals live nicht so hoch und merklich rauer ausfielen.

Ein großer Teil des Sets wurde von Songs der aktuellen CD eingenommen, aber auch ältere Stücke wie “Hammer Slammer” kamen nicht zu kurz. Die Band war offensichtlich gut aufgelegt, der sympathische Sänger konnte das Publikum mit seinen Sprüchen immer wieder unterhalten und zu kurzen Mitmach-Spielchen animieren. Die Songs gehören sicherlich nicht zu den abwechslungsreichsten oder anspruchsvollsten, aber wenn das ganze mit so viel Spielfreude dargeboten wird, macht das Zuschauen und Dabeisein einfach nur Spaß, deshalb wurde die Band verdient gefeiert. So muss eine Old School Thrash Metal-Show aussehen.

Gewundert hat mich nur die Auswahl der Support-Band – beim Sound von Gama Bomb würde mir spontan Roadkill hier aus der Gegend als passende Vorband einfallen.

Fantástica y alucinante mezcla de doom y sludge, llegando a  la extrema brutalidad en cada uno de sus temas. Lo curioso y es la primera vez que veo esto, es la duración de sus canciones.  En este tipo de música, las canciones suelen ser largas duraciones, pero esta vez, son temas muy contundentes de apenas dos o tres minutos.

Un debut el de estos chicos, más que prometedor. Con una música directa, violenta y áspera. El album dura bien poco, pero suficiente para degustar una nueva banda que se sube al carro del Doom/Sludge y otros sonidos.

Muy recomendable.

No começo do Ano, quando o Disturbed lançou o album Indestructible, a banda mostrou uma qualidade superior com o mesmo ritmo e teor de letras.

Bem a cara do Disturbed: manter o bom som, isto é, sem mudar muito.

Entre estilos variados de rock, o Disturbed se destaca. Seria Disturbed a melhor banda de Hard Rock no momento? Até Lordi se inspirou para fazer o single “Rockalypse“

Já o Avenged Sevenfold: a lenda do MetalCore, uma respeitada banda porém nova, muito adorada pelos nossos leitores, também está na ativa.

Em seu repertório, em turnês, era muito comum covers. Principalmente de grandes nomes de Rock. Nesse caso não é só MetalCore.

Rock é rock, porém cada um com seu estilo, ninguém comentava nada sobre os covers que faziam. Apesar de ser um disperdício, pois suas próprias musicas eram boas. Não havia necessidade de fazer esses “Jam’s” para chamar antenção, ou que seja a intenção.

Avenged já fazia cover do Pantera faz tempo, desde 2006. “WALK” era uma das músicas que tocavam, pricipalmente quando estavam no território americano.

E o Kiko? Disturbed é HardRock e Avenged é MetalCore.

Bem que se dane a Madonna e esses metaleiros da pesada, se você tiver um pouco de paciência e entender um mínimo de inglês,  Artisan News Service publicou em Maio um rumor, de uma suposta crítica de Disturbed para Avenged sobre sua versão. Criando uma polêmica e um pouco de tensão entre duas bandas. Essa briga de cachorro grande começa nesse vídeo:

Logo surge uma briga entre os fãs.

De que lado ficariam?

Os rumores cresciam e o A7x se pronunciou dizendo que comentários deviam ser só comentários e não virar caso.

Versão Disturbed – WALK (Pantera)

El cuarto lugar de mis discos favoritos personales este año lo obtiene un banda que antaño no me causaba mucha cosquillita en la sección intermedia…

4.- POISON THE WELL “THE TROPIC ROT”

Se trata de Poison the Well una banda de Florida, región de sol y palmeras de Estados Unidos, que originalmente formaba parte de la movida Metalcore gringa pero que al fin con este disco parece desmarcarse de las odiosas categorías y logra un sonido mucho más interesante al que vale la pena prestar atención.

“The Tropic Rot” se llama el disco editado este año mediante el sello independiente Ferret y como buena banda metalcore arranca con gran potencia. “Exist Underground” es un corte que resumirá la propuesta 2009 de la banda intercalando maliciosos riffs y gritos hardcore con melosas melodías y voces limpias perfectamente logradas. Le sigue “Sparks It Will Rain”, donde queda claro que los cortes melódicos serán los que darán consistencia al álbum, y luego “Cinema” el primer tema del bloque más interesante del disco.

Si bien en “Cinema” la premisa es la misma que en los dos primeros temas, es recién en esta pista que las secciones pesadas con las melódicas parecen convivir en un perfecto equilibrio. El poderoso riff principal es tan memorable como la dulce melodía del coro y los cortes están tan bien calados que es inevitable no pedir “moar” después de la primera pasada. Y lo mejor está recién empezando…

Declaro en este preciso instante que soy un fiel seguidor de Slayer y del Metal directo y contundente, pero también confieso que si algún día King y Hahnemann salieran con un numerito melódico para aderezar uno de sus discos les tendría aún más respeto como músicos… El caso es que “Pamplemouse”, el cuarto tema en “The Tropic Rot”, logra un golpe tan acertado, con sus guitarras limpias, su deliciosa cadencia, los pequeños detalles que cruzan la canción de extremo a extremo y la dulce melodía vocal, que volver a un ambiente derechamente metal como el anterior a esta pista sería una paso hacia atrás. Por suerte estos chicos estaban en pleno uso de sus cabales y el siguiente tema, “Who Doesnt Love a Good Dismemberment”, invierte la formula previa relegando los momentos más extremos y guitarreros a los coros y recurriendo a lo melódico para la sustentación de la mayor parte del tema. Muy buena jugada ciertamente, son decisiones como esas las que hacen de un disco una experiencia que va más allá de un montón de canciones que puedes bajar de internet… y se agradece.

“Antartica Inside Me” es otro corte melódico muy bien logrado. A diferencia de “Pamplemouse” esta cuenta con mayor energía y potencia pero sin duda la intensidad melódica predomina. Hay que detenerse a destacar el trabajo del productor Steve Evetts, una verdadera personalidad en el ambiente post hardcore, quien logra compensar de manera bastante eficiente los extremos ofrecidos por Poison the Well. En momentos donde las melodías bien podrían terminar sonando débiles e insípidas, Evetts supo convertirlas en algo casi tan amenazante como los mismos momentos de agresión hardcore. El espeso muro sónico conformado por guitarras y bajo durante gran parte del álbum logra respirar mediante lo libre que resuenan la batería de Chris Hornbrook y la voz de Jeff Moreira. Es un trabajo realmente bien logrado ciertamente, y “When I Lose You I Lose Myself As Well” confirma que Evetts fue la elección perfecta para la propuesta y reinvención 2009 de la banda.

“When I Lose You I Lose Myself As Well” brota desde una orgía acústica y decanta en una sección eléctrica que alcanza niveles de emoción épicos, mientras que “Celebrate the Pyre” recupera la intensidad guitarrera de las primeras dos pistas y sin duda sienta realmente bien luego de un bloque completo de pistas melódicas. “Are You Anywhere” es el más pausado del disco y nuevamente intercala melodía con quiebres pesados, logra convencer pero puede parecer un poco repetitivo en momentos. “Makeshift Clay You” no se detiene por respiros melódicos y entrega casi 3 minutos de hardcore directo y moshero, para que finalmente “Without You and One Other I Am Nothing” cierre el disco con un resumen de lo que fue “The Tropic Rot”, una perfecta galería de momentos de alta intensidad y belleza innegable.

El lugar cuatro en mi lista lo obtiene un trabajo altamente recomendable que puede ser de gusto de muchos, tanto como de disgusto de otros. Los momentos melódicos en el nuevo disco de Poison the Well son memorables, es difícil sacarlos de la cabeza una vez que haz terminado el disco, y las secciones hardcore están muy interesantes y dinámicas, por lo menos para lo que haya escuchado últimamente. Es precisamente la capacidad de enganchar esas melodías a mis tímpanos, y no permitir que aflojen por días, que “The Tropic Rot” terminó volviéndose un disco fundamental para mi este año. Es uno de esos discos que te acompañan a donde vayas y que de alguna manera impregnan tus momentos y magnifican tus emociones…

No dejen que termine el 2009 sin darle a Poison the Well una oportunidad, ciertamente no descubrirán un continente nuevo en música al escuchar este disco pero definitivamente estarán oyendo uno de los discos mejor logrados dentro del estilo.

Sybreed - Antares (2007)

Bien podría sonar así la música del futuro. Sobre 2007 Benjamin y los suyos editaron el segundo álbum de este grupo suizo. Metal industrial de fondo con una base de metalcore. Dos géneros que bien no pueden entrarnos por la vista, pero que nos harán aceptar la gran calidad que tiene el grupo atreves de nuestros oídos. Canciones como Ego Bypass Generator, Emma-0, Dynamic (increíble sonido industrial y malévolo en dicho track) y la que es la mejor, Twelve Megatons Gravity, os teleransportaran a un mundo futurista falto totalmente de emociones, pero que bajo la redundancia os hará sentir varios estados sentimentales conforme avanza al álbum haciendo despertar el corazón dormido de una sociedad inerte.

Excelente trabajo.

when shannon moore had the idea to start a band, he knew it could only work if the music had the same raw emotion and integrity as the music he was inspired by. thats a lot of music and some really big shoes to fill. at a young age he was obsessing over music from artists like prince, isaac hayes, funkadelic, james brown, metallica, slayer bad brains, cro-mags etc. after being personally mentored and rooted by legendary guitarist gary (dr know) miller (bad brains) and legendary drummer mackie jayson (cro-mags) he developed the confidence to write and perform music of his own. what he was looking for was a way to combine the sound the of the hardcore of the 80’s an early 90’s with the metal of now. after running into his friend, guitarist jared drace one random day on the lower east side he though that might be the answer he was looking for. he knew jared was into newer bands like in flames, at the gates, and municipal waste. shannon had the idea that with his knowledge of the old and jareds knowledge of the new they could make something special. he emailed jared and they immediately began writing songs together in a loft with no bass player and no heat. shortly after they recruited bass player willie paredes ( astroland, pagoda) and drummer garry sullivan (cro-mags, B 52’s, bernie worrel, TM stevens) and ACTIVATOR was born. when the songs were ready to be recorded they turned to producer friend scott “scotty hard ” harding (medeski martin and wood, dj logic, wu tang, gravediggaz) who recorded what was soon to become the unfortunate lovely EP at his studio in greenpoint. with the help of El-P and his label definitive jux, the “unfortunate lovely EP” will be available soon.

In my previous post, I was talking more towards from my perspective as a music listener. Now allow to share my feelings regarding this revolution as an aspiring musician myself.

As some of you might know, I am from a band that plays music from the Metal core genre (It’s a fusion between Hardcore and Metal music, but I digress). And yes, like the many others before and after me, I hope to let my music be heard widely one day.

I had so many plans ready in my head. Practice hard, play many live performances, get our originals out, record an album etc. The normal, conventional route that worked. In the past.

However, as we all can see. The methods of old don’t work as well no more. Music sales are at an all time low. Nobody seems to be buying albums any more. My good friend Wayne posts direct download links to music he cares for on his blog. Even I myself don’t make my way down to a music outlet to get my fix unlike before in the past.

The selling and marketing methods used by record companies have dramatically transformed. Some musicians even eschewed such organizations and gone independent themselves. Producing and marketing everything from head to toe.

YouTube, MySpace, Purevolume and etc. All these are the new conduits for getting music out there and heard. All those who managed to successfully jump onto that bandwagon, have truly mastered the new arts of salesmanship.

But what about those left behind like me? Still stuck in their old mindsets and lacking the knowledge and skill sets to take advantage of the new revolution. Ok the latter part doesn’t really apply to me, but I got to get out of my comfort zone from now on.

Or risk getting left behind. And when that happens – Poof! Goes my dreams.

C’est La Vie – Such is a life of an aspiring musician.

Genial mezcla de hardcore duro y de calidad, con suaves melodías y grandes cambios de ritmo. Si a esto,  le sumamos que el vocalista, en los trozos bestias, tiene una voz bastante guapa y contundente. Podemos decir entonces, que este disco no desagradará para nada a los amantes de la música rápida, machacona y voces irritantes (pero sus melodías, a mi, no me gustan nada en absoluto).

you’ve gotta love when bands are doing home movie stuff to get more money out of their fans and they have to try to be funny. some bands are successful. avenged sevenfold was not.

In something of a departure for me as a critic, my first ever album review has just gone live over at The Dreaded Press.

The review is of The Life We Have Chosen, the first album by scouse metalcore band Carcer City, a band whose very name rubbed me the right way by virtue of being a reference to the Manhunt series of video games.  I really enjoyed the process of listening to the album, forming an opinion and investigating the rest of the genre though I must say that I did struggle with musical terminology.  There’s only so many different ways in which to say “really loud and intense guitar-noise” without drifting into talk of “thunderous axe work”.

I searched online for Myanmar metal stuff last night and found a forum. With great expectations, I clicked on the link.

What I found?

They were talking about… nu-metal??? Yes, nu-metal. Frigging hell mallcore stuff like Slipknot and Marilyn Manson. There were even people who mentioned Linkin Park and Flyleaf.

Seriously! There was nothing on it but mallcore. -.-

Next one was a blog. He was talking about Slipknot and how much he likes them and on another blog was an article on Myanmar metal scene and the author was talking about Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold and Trivium. Frigging Metalcore.

Why can’t they just get out of this whole mallcore thing??? Why won’t they step deeper into the depths? WHY?????

There were even some people who said,”Slipknot is Death Metal”. Ya, go die. It pisses me off when I hear people saying crap like that.

Mallcore, Nu-metal, Metalcore, BFMV, A7X, Marilyn Manson, BMTH, blah blah blah and it goes on and on and on in a never finishing mallcore whirlpool. This is what’s happening  in Myanmar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Metal albums aren’t that rare anymore. You can pretty much buy them here. (Last week I got Black Sabbath:The Dio Years and Megadeth’s Endgame.) Or you can download them via Mediafire or 4shared (which I usually do).

Still people are still drowning in the mallcore whirlpool… labeling themselves “metalheads” with Slipknot songs in their mp3 players.

It’s time to ditch out mallcore people! Ditch it out and explore into the depths of Metal!

Yo conocía, conozco y he escuchado el tremendo album que es I don´t care where i go when i die, recomendable para todo amante de la música más EXTREMA. Jodidamente buenos estos salvajes de Salt Lake City-Utah (Usa).

Nos presentan ahora, bueno, por este año. Su He never is coming back, que no es otra cosa, que la muestra de hasta donde se puede llevar el gusto por la música más extrema. Sinceramente, escuchar este disco supone un esfuerzo mental bastante grande , por su dureza y crudeza. Me explico, es un album demoledor, abrasivo, desgarrador, brutal, contundente y así, muchos adejtivos más. Por eso, debe de abstenerse gnete sensible y gente no tan sensible. Desde el primer minuto, podemos saborear la dulzura con la que estos cuatro musicos sacan lo mejor de si. Si cierras los ojos para escuchar este album, te aviso, es muy posible de que lleves algún susto y ya veréis el por qué.

Gaza son sencillamente geniales, acojonantes y ojalá, sigan sacandao muchos muchos muchos discos. Este es otro que hay que comprar obligatoriamente. Órdago para Gaza. Pobre de mis oídos y de vecinos, claro.
