Hace poco menos de un mes se anunció la publicación del DVD del concierto que Metallica ofreció en Nimes (Francia) y que saldrá a la venta el 23 de noviembre. Ahora, Universal Music anuncia que Metallica publicará el próximo 30 de noviembre un nuevo DVD, esta vez dedicado al público hispanohablante.

Lllevará por título Orgullo, pasión y gloria: tres noches en la ciudad de México. Fue grabado en los tres conciertos que la banda dio los días 4,6 y 7 del pasado junio. A falta de conocer el tracklist definitivo, compuesto por 19 de canciones, adelantan que aparecerán los siguientes temas:

Ride The Lightning

The Memory Remains
Sad But True
The Unforgiven
The Day That Never Comes

Además de esta noticia, existen fuertes rumores de que tras reventar el Foro Sol tres noches, Metallica esta listo para regresar a nuestro país el próximo año. Esta noticia podría ser confirmada la próxima semana, durante la presentación del DVD.

Orgullo, Pasion y Gloria sera el titulo del DVD que Metallica grabo a principios de año en nuestro pais donde vendran escenas de los 3 conciertos asi como una entrevista realizada por el ex locutor de Radioactivo Olallo Rubio, pero la noticia es el rumor donde se anuncia una nueva fecha para Mexico, Guadalajara y Monterrey el proximo año como parte por su gira en Latinoamerica. En cuanto tengamos mas informacion les mantendremos informados, via SOPITAS

Seguindo a indicação do Fabian (reforçada pelo Lucas), fui conferir o documentário Get Trashed - A História do Trash Metal, de 2006. E eles têm razão. Ao contrário do que rolou em Botinada (justamente) e American Hardcore (injustamente), o Suicidal recebe o tratamento merecido.

Há um capítulo só para a banda no documentário. Com uma série de depoimentos e muitos elogios, de caras como o baterista do Anthrax  Charlie Benante, o ex-baixista do Megadeth David Ellefson e o vocalista do Hatebreed Jamey Jasta.

Tudo por conta da inestimável (na opinião deles e na minha) contribuição do ST ao trash, mais propriamente, ao crossover, junção do metal com o hardcore. E aí, grande parte dos méritos são concedidos ao Rocky George no filme.

Com toda a justiça. Mas faltou lembrar a influência de Ralph Herrera, com a sua batera com dois bumbos, e Mike Clark, riffeiro de mão cheia na guitarra base.

Quanto ao Suicidal, outro pecado do documentário, como alertou o Fabian, foi a ausência de testemunhais por parte de ex ou atuais integrantes da banda. Os caras conseguiram falar até com os marrentos Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) e Lars Ulrich (Metallica)! Imperdoável!

Pra fechar, publico uma foto absolutamente espetacular mostrada no filme que eu nunca tinha visto. Pra variar, obra do Glen Friedman, jornalista que registrou magistralmente todo o início da banda. Smith, Muir, Mayorga e Estes largados em um supermercado…

Pop music vs. Classical

I’m not sure what it is, however, there has been an “elitist” bias among practitioners of classical music (and jazz to an extent) towards pop music. With their complexities, and often times, numerous years of study at music programs, classical musicians reverence of historical catalogues, yet it doesn’t improve their popularity among the masses.

On the other hand, pop music (in this case all popular music) keeps growing in popularity with the advent of the internet. Sometimes there has been collaborations like Metallica’s orchestral performances, or anytime you bring in a string section in a pop tune ballad.

Classical music activists say there is no interest to classical/jazz music & that in many ways it’s dying (sales of songs/albums). Critics blame it on the public for not appreciating the greatness of the music. Meanwhile, pop musicians like Miley Cyrus and Linkin Park sell tons of albums, itunes, merch, and ticket sales for tours. Today I checked ticketmaster and the top billed ticket price for Bonjovi concert was over $1,100 (and those were sold out within 10 minutes). And no offense, but I’m not sure if any pop artist will last as long as a Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin.

#1 Music is music & it needs be promoted through press, given publicity, shared, passed on to each successive generation. It doesn’t happen by osmosis.

My point, is that in my experiences as a music writer, I have got a lot of positive response from the pop music community and silence/ignored by the classical/jazz community. Now, I admit I don’t search out classical or jazz as much as pop music, but I have a beef with the “Classical” mindset.

Simple example, whenever I have contacted pop musicians/bands about doing an article or contacting them for background info, etc., I have usually been given a positive and response. They seem to welcome publicity and press. So, I’ve been sent many press releases, invites to shows, and made contacts within the pop music world.

On the other hand, whenever I have contacted classical/jazz musicians or venues about writing articles and giving some press on this genre of music, I’m usually “stiffed at the door.” I have contacted Koerner Hall multiple times, which is the new performance hall in Toronto specifically made for the RC (Royal Conservatory).

My beef is that I contacted them through the appropriate channels knowing that the 1st season of this concert hall is a big deal for Toronto. The thing is they didn’t get back to me with any response after taking my info down & saying it would be passed to “blah blah” and I think that’s poor that they don’t get back to me with at least an explanation as to why it’s a “no”.

If given press access, I would’ve went to the “9’s” in writing about all the great classical, jazz, world music performances that are going on there. And I really don’t understand it, because classical/jazz is definitely in the decline and a lot less popular than pop music, which get’s most of the music press.

So, I’ve got the beef out & it’s done. No grudges, I’ll even leave the link to Royal Conservatory/Koerner Hall, so you can check out their shows & go to them if you are in the GTA region (Greater Toronto Area). If you want to get the younger mainstream audiences into classical/jazz, you need all the promo you can get.

I just wonder if classical music society purposely want to keep the concerts small, quiet, in order to…have the masses stay away.

With so much commercially available music on the internet today it is very easy for ones’ perception to be skewed, particularly among the younger generation.

Big name artists such as Metallica, Pink, Coldplay and Robbie Williams greet you at every turn, not only on the sites of major distributors, but also in ads on a multitude of social networking sites. Make no mistake, I am in no way criticising these artists, they just sprung to mind. I actually happen to like them, despite being trapped in the rock music of 1972 as far as my taste in music goes. These artists are not only extremely talented but they have worked extremely hard for a long time to get where they are. There is no such thing as ‘overnight success.’

So where do lesser known or barely heard of artists fit into this picture? As far as the major distributors are concerned, they don’t. They are not making the distributor vast amounts of money so when such independent musicians puts their material up for grabs on the likes of iTunes and Amazon, etc, unless people in their droves download their mp3 and download it quickly, the artist may as well not be there.

La venta de entradas para el concierto que el grupo estadounidense Metallica dará en Lima el próximo 19 de enero ya bate todos los récords, al vender en tan sólo un día 15.000 boletos.

Según datos de la empresa organizadora del concierto, “People & Music”, solo en ese primer día se vendieron 15.000 entradas, con lo que se superó el anterior récord establecido, cuando Soda Stereo logró vender 12.000 boletos en un día para el concierto que el grupo argentino dio en Lima en 2007.

Metallica tocará en Lima en un estadio con capacidad para 50.000 personas, si las ventas siguen asi, de seguro llenarán el estadio.

-  Noi am baut prima Coca-Cola la sticla si am descoperit  internetul;

-  Noi nu ne dadeam bip-uri, ne fluieram sa iesim afara, noi nu aveam dolby surround system, taceam toti ca sa  auzim actiunea filmului, nu aveam Nintendo sau Playstation  ci jocuri tetris de care ne plictiseam la o luna dupa ce le  cumparam si le uitam pe dulap, pline de praf;

-  Abia asteptam la chefuri sa jucam “Fantanita”, sau “Flori, fete sau baieti”, sau “Adevar sau Provocare”, sau orice ne dadea un pretext sa “pupam pe gura” pe cine “iubeam”…;

Metallica cumplirá el sueño de sus fanáticos peruanos el 19 de enero de 2010 en el estadio de la universidad de San Marcos. La cuenta regresiva se inicia: es momento de desempolvar las viejas botas metaleras y los polos negros. ¡Seek and destroy!

Si tuviera que resumir mi vida musical en tan solo dos nombres, pues aunque sea la elección tan difícil como el más complejo problema de geometría del espacio -dada la cantidad de bandas y solistas que han hecho mi vida más llevadera- me vería obligado a escoger a Metallica y Pearl Jam. Dos bandas muy diferentes, pero demasiado importantes.

Metallica se metió en mi galería de héroes musicales desde que era muy pequeño. La electricidad y el poder de su sonido llenaron mis oídos con éxito absoluto. La voz de James Hetfield, el poder de los solos guitarreros de Kirk Hammett, el incesante bajo de Jason Newsted (Rob Trujillo no lo hace nada mal hoy en día) y la batería implacable de Lars Ulrich le dieron a mi corazón la dosis de fuerza necesaria para resistir los embates propios de la adolescencia.

Lo de Pearl Jam es otra historia que merece un post aparte y si algún día Eddie Vedder y sus muchachos pasan por nuestro país, pues después de ello podré decir que soy el hombre más feliz de la tierra (musicalmente hablando, claro está). Pero es mejor no desviarse. Prosigo. Metallica llenó espacios en momentos justos. Cuando uno es chico necesita desfogarse y las melodías de los californianos eran el vehículo perfecto para sacar toda la energía reprimida por medio de desaforados gritos y el agitar de la cabeza.

Pero el tiempo ha pasado y James Hetfield ya tiene la barba blanca. Lars Ulrich ya no usa más el cabello largo. Kirk Hammett luce algunas arrugas en el rostro que evidencian el trajín de la vida. Sin embargo, la esencia persiste. El cuero sigue pegado a sus cuerpos. El grito está intacto. Metallica está más fuerte que nunca. Yo ya tengo mi entrada. Me toca desempolvar las botas y seguir contando los días.

Have you ever been to a concert and been so far back from the stage on the floor or in the stands that the musicians looked like little pins on a huge map that you could barely make out?  Me too… and it can be really frustrating.

I must admit, I have had some pretty great opportunities to interview bands, or sit up close from time to time through my years as a reporter and former rock radio DJ, but there is NOTHING like being in the protected area in front of the stage called the “Photo Pit”.   You are actually closer than being in the front row, and protected from concertgoers who might push their way around you while trying to get a good spot to see the band.   Last night, I had the rockin’ opportunity to be in the Photo Pit for Metallica’s sold out show at Madison Square Garden, and I took some great shots to share with you.

Getting into the Photo Pit area is quite a process, but a really exciting one to be a part of.  First security checks you in, searches you, and has you in a holding pattern in the bowels of the arena where everything sounds muffled and has the charm of an abandoned hospital ward.  Then you are loaded into a service elevator and taken to the main floor where waiting fans are filling the arena with nervous and excited energy.   Because Metallica plays “in the round” which is a stage in the center of the arena, you are led out through the tunnel in the middle of MSG to the stage, and once fans see the photographers being led out in a row… they know that the band is very close to going on.  There are loud hoots and cheers, hands go in the air, the volume of the arena cranks up to 9  (11 is saved for Metallica of course).   Photographers get in position, roaming the area between the barricade and stage like cats pacing for milk.     Once the lights go down, and the band comes out, you have 3 songs only to get as many shots as you can before you are escorted back to the service elevator and led back outside.  That’s right, no free tickets come along with the Photo Pit pass, but once you see the slide show and video clip here, I think you’ll agree, it’s not a bad payoff!

I was just watching the “Meet and Greets” with Metallica on their tours of their other shows, I couldn’t help but laugh at this one. I just had to post it.

If you watch toward the end of this video where James is meeting fans, he talks to this guy/woman, whatever that person is with the long red hair…James makes a smart ass comment to the person by saying, “They’ll be throwing pennies into a jar”. James gives a little laugh, the long haired person just looks away, not saying anything, looking a bit embarrassed. Was James being kind of a dick to that person, LOL?

James then was kind of being the same way when he talked to the guy with the mohawk. The guy with the mohawk asks him, “You gonna rock out tonight”? James says, “No”.

Here is Metallica meeting fans backstage. Here is some more evidence that these guys love their fans so much and this video proves it. It makes me wish I had a backstage pass. They seem like super nice guys.

Like always Metallica have the video camera on where ever they go. Here is the band backstage rehearsing and tuning up, way earlier before the show started that day. As usual, Lars and James always fighting and arguing, just like little brothers in high school. They stick together like family ’cause they really are kind of like brothers. So don’t take their heated arguments seriously. James and Lars have been acting like this toward each other since the 80’s.

I would never even dream of attempting to discuss if my brain is different from Francy’s.  I studied literature instead of biology for many reasons.  I do however get quite a good laugh over the little things which are different about both of us.  The things which often leave me shaking my head or doing everything humanly possible to expose Francy to something I feel he’s missing out on.

Music-Sadly we do not have the same tastes in music.  The radio doesn’t count since I don’t think anyone really enjoys listening to the radio as in “Wow, I can’t wait to get home and blast a little R102.9 FM!” What’s always struck me as strange is the fact that I lean more towards guy music Metallica, Motley Crue, AC/DC while Francy likes wuss rock.  Oh sure, he claims that as a young man he liked Pink Floyd, yet he’s never watched The Wizard of Oz while listening to Dark Side of the Moon.  I can assure you all that it was a true feat not to chuckle (we’d just started to get serious, so it was a definite no-no) when he told me that the theme to Chariots of Fire* was THE most beautiful song ever recorded. The best thing I could think of to steer him in the right direction was playing Mr Roboto and teaching him some robot dance moves.

*Point well made.  It is a lovely and inspiring film, but like most songs which have been over-used ad nauseum, it lost its cache years ago.

Clothing-I like black.  I don’t like most colors as far as clothing goes because I find them unflattering.  I don’t feel that a skirt is more “elegant” and the reason why sales clerks treat me like dirt when I go shopping.  Since I allow Francy to believe that pleated pants and boat shoes are still reasonable fashion choices, I put the kibosh on critiquing my wardrobe.

Food-By food I specifically mean sweets.  The most common complaint when I bake something is that it’s “too sweet”.  Um, it’s a cookie for Pete’s sake!!!!  This complaint is especially confusing when you see Francy create the following summertime dessert for himself:

Ingredients: strawberries, granulated sugar, spray can whipped cream

Recipe:  Wash fruit, slice and sprinkle with sugar, top (and generously I might add) with whipped cream and sprinkle more sugar on top to make the whipped cream “crunchy”.

I really do love you babe, but can you see where a gal could get confused?

A Turnê é do disco Death Magnetic, que teve mais de 30 mil cópias vendidas no Brasil desde o seu lançamento.

SÃO PAULO - O Metallica virá ao Brasil em janeiro de 2010, com a turnê do disco Death Magnetic, de acordo com informações da Universal Music Brasil divulgadas ontem. Em comunicado, a gravadora ainda anunciou que o novo disco da banda norte-americana, lançado no final de 2008, já ultrapassou a marca de 30 mil unidades vendidas no País. O Metallica é, mais uma vez, ouro no Brasil?, diz a mensagem. As datas das apresentações não foram divulgadas. Nesta semana, a banda grava DVD na Cidade do México. O último show da banda no País foi em 1999. Em 2003, o Metallica realizaria shows em São Paulo e Rio, mas problemas de saúde levaram ao cancelamento das apresentações.
