Bertrand Méheust, 2009, La Politique de l’oxymore. Comment ceux qui nous gouvernent nous masquent la réalité du monde, La Découverte, 161 p.

1 Avec La Politique de l’oxymore, le philosophe Bertrand Méheust a signé un excellent essai, qui aurait tout aussi bien pu s’intituler La Saturation du monde. Moins accrocheur, moins communicatif, ce titre aurait cependant davantage souligné ce qui fait la stimulante originalité de la démarche choisie et de la thèse défendue.

2 L’idée selon laquelle la gravité de la crise écologique globale – pour ne pas dire de l’effondrement écologique global – est sans cesse euphémisée par des oxymores n’est pas une thèse d’une grande nouveauté : la dénonciation du développement durable comme oxymore, devenue l’un des arguments incontournables des objecteurs de croissance, en est la preuve.1 Sur ce thème, Bertrand Méheust va simplement un peu plus loin en soutenant que l’invention et l’utilisation massive des oxymores par le pouvoir en place a aujourd’hui atteint un degré inédit dans l’histoire : croissance négative, marché civilisationnel, financiarisation durable, etc. « Les oxymores ainsi utilisés peuvent alors favoriser la déstructuration des esprits, devenir des facteurs de pathologie et des outils de mensonge » (p. 121). « Utilisé à dose massive, l’oxymore rend fou. […] Transformé en “injonction contradictoire”, il devient un poison social. Le langage exprime déjà ces tensions et cette fuite devant le réel. Une novlangue libérale dont la fonction principale est de gommer les réalités qui fâchent, les aspects de la condition humaine qu’il convient de masquer, est en train de prendre la suite de l’ancienne novlangue nazie ou communiste. » (pp. 147-148).

3 Mais cette dénonciation de l’usage d’expressions vides de sens pour « masquer la réalité du monde », aussi intéressante soit-elle, non seulement n’est pas fondamentalement nouvelle, mais en plus (et malgré le titre du livre) n’occupe que le dernier tiers du texte. Or ce sont peut-être les deux premiers tiers qui sont les plus audacieux et les plus originaux du livre : ce sont les pages consacrées à la description de cette fameuse « réalité du monde » que l’usage massif des oxymores participe à masquer.

4 Cette réalité, Bertrand Méheust la voit d’un œil très sombre. Et en cela, il prend nettement et explicitement ses distances avec la perspective de son proche collègue Dominique Bourg, qui tend à penser que les démocraties ont en elles les ressorts nécessaires au dépassement de la crise écologique et à l’invention d’un développement durable.2 Pour Bertrand Méheust, au contraire, les démocraties ne disposent pas de ressources particulières qui leur permettraient de mieux surmonter ces épreuves.

5 Pour arriver à ce terrible constat, l’auteur adopte un « pessimisme méthodique » (p.7), consistant à « [appliquer] “l’heuristique de la peur” de Jonas à la sociologie spéculative » (p.29), parce qu’en situation d’incertitude radicale « nous avons le devoir d’examiner le pire, de le regarder en face » (p.14). Résultat de cette démarche : « Je crains que la métamorphose espérée n’intervienne trop tard pour enrayer la crise écologique, et ne manifeste pleinement ses effets que pendant et après la catastrophe, un peu comme le pacifisme n’empêche pas les guerres mais se développe dans leur sillage. » (p.9).Pourquoi une telle certitude que nous ne parviendrons pas à anticiper la catastrophe, que nous irons nécessairement dans le mur avant de comprendre et de tirer les conclusions de ce que, pourtant, nous savons déjà depuis longtemps ?

6 D’abord, soutient Bertrand Méheust, parce que des seuils d’irréversibilité ont peut-être déjà été dépassés : « le slogan “un autre monde est toujours possible”, s’il constitue bien la base de toute réflexion et de toute action politique, doit être affiné, modulé en fonction de ces niveaux de réalité. Il y a ce qui est toujours possible, mais il y a aussi ce qui l’aurait été, et, hélas, ce qui ne l’est plus. […] Nos actions (passées et présentes) ne cessent de modifier le monde des possibles, d’ouvrir de nouvelles voies mais aussi d’en fermer. Cette remarque vaut au plus haut point pour la question écologique. Tout le problème est de discerner la marge de manœuvre dont nous disposons, le temps qui nous reste, avant que le point de non-retour ne soit atteint, si ce n’est pas déjà fait, au moins dans certains domaines. » (pp. 12-13).

7 Mais même dans l’hypothèse optimiste où la croisée des chemins ne serait pas déjà dernière nous, l’auteur ne parvient pas à croire en un changement significatif de notre trajectoire. En effet, affirme-t-il, « toute société cherche à persévérer dans son être » (p. 17), et la nôtre tout autant que les autres. Pour soutenir cette idée, Bertrand Méheust recourt au concept de saturation qui fut proposé par Gilbert Simondon : ce concept « implique l’idée qu’un système de réalité quelconque (physique, biologique, psychique, social, technique) va jusqu’au bout de ses possibilités, et ne se transforme que lorsqu’il est devenu incompatible avec lui-même. Lorsqu’il est “saturé”, il fait un bond par-dessus lui-même et se restructure sur un autre plan, de façon soudaine. » (p. 31). Et si l’on applique ce concept à nos sociétés mondialisées, « la conclusion semble s’imposer : on n’empêchera pas le système d’aller jusqu’au bout de sa logique. » (p. 107). « Rien n’empêchera le monde moderne d’aller jusqu’à sa saturation, et donc la descente aux enfers de l’humanité de se poursuivre, jusqu’à l’inéluctable catastrophe. Certes, […] l’Hypertitanic commencera à décélérer et à infléchir sa trajectoire. Mais tout cela viendra sans doute trop tard. » (p. 157).

8 Seule une contrainte extérieure à nous-mêmes (la saturation du monde par nos déchets, nos consommations, nos destructions, etc.) pourrait donc nous forcer à réduire notre « pression de confort » (p. 48), c’est-à-dire de nos normes de confort et de la pression qu’elles impliquent nécessairement sur l’environnement. Le problème est « qu’aucun système démocratique ne semble pouvoir fonctionner en dessous d’une certaine pression de confort » (p. 51) et que notre époque pourrait bien alors n’avoir été qu’une « petite bulle de justice et de prospérité » dans l’immensité du temps, petite bulle qui « sera peut-être maudite par les générations futures comme un âge noir de l’humanité. » (p. 53).

9 On reprochera peut-être à Bertrand Méheust d’être trop déterministe dans son analyse, de croire en un destin, en « une sorte de fatum [qui] semble devoir entraîner notre société vers l’abîme quoi que nous fassions. » (p. 149). Il est vrai que sur ce point, d’autres analyses pourraient venir nuancer le diagnostic – notamment l’ouvrage de Jared Diamond dont le sous-titre, « comment les sociétés décident de leur disparition ou de leur survie », affirme clairement que notre société est en mesure de choisir, qu’elle peut échapper à la saturation.3 Mais l’analyse de Diamond reste-t-elle valable si certains seuils d’irréversibilité ont d’ores et déjà été dépassés ?

10 À plusieurs reprises, Bertrand Méheust explique que son essai n’a pas pour but de nous faire baisser les bras : il en appelle à la décroissance (p. 160) et à l’autolimitation (p. 161), mais sans y croire vraiment. Cet essai fait donc partie d’une série d’ouvrages récents4 qui partent du principe que la catastrophe est déjà là, qu’elle est désormais une contrainte qui s’imposera à nous comme une urgence permanente, avec laquelle nous ne pourrons pas négocier et qui nous imposera des choix difficiles : par exemple entre le maintien du pouvoir d’achat et des normes de confort des pays du nord d’une part, et la lutte internationale contre les inégalités d’autre part… Des choix difficiles, et donc des sacrifices : un postulat radical que les analyses plus institutionnelles peinent à envisager sérieusement, ne serait-ce que comme une hypothèse parmi d’autres. Bertrand Méheust, comme beaucoup de ces auteurs souvent qualifiés de « radicaux », se présente comme étant ouvert au dialogue, tout en regrettant qu’aucun contradicteur ne prenne véritablement la peine de contre-argumenter : « j’aimerais me tromper, mais j’attends que l’on écarte mes raisons. » (p. 160). Le défi est lancé ! À quand le financement d’un programme de recherche sur la question spécifique de l’effondrement des sociétés occidentales ?

Sweet

Pictured above, Metamorphose has an adorable coat in a high-waisted cut. The Frilly Dolly Coat, pictured in red velveteen, has multiple tiers or ruffles along the back.  The hem of the coat features a subtle swan motif.

 Is it just me or does BABY, The Stars Shine Bright have just as many winter coat designs as it has dress designs this winter? On the left is the Rosetta Coat in black with a textured linen look and a plushy-looking fur collar. The Ribbon Minuet Coat on the right is a good option for Lolitas that don’t like the look or feel of fur but still want a cute, warm coat.

 On the left, BABY, The Stars Shine Bright Etoile Coat has an adorable puffed-sleeve design, detachable fur collar and two tiers of ruffles along the waist. The waist ruffles are adorable, but likely best suited to Lolitas with smaller waist measurements. On the right, the Pretty Rich Ribbon Coat is one of Angelic Pretty’s more muted winter coat options, although it is still over-the-top by cotton candy Sweet by most standards.

Gothic

 Because ruffles and bows may not be everyone’s cup of tea, Black Peace Now has drawn up inspiration from the past for the design of the Retro Coat. The 60s/70s-era style collar is the biggest design feature but it also features coattails and and a buttoned sleeve-cuff. On the right, Black Peace Now for Men Long Coat has a one-button enclosure and is accented by a row of rings along the waist.

 Three belted trench coats with fur collars all in a row. The one thing you have to love about Atelier Boz is that they completely believe in equal opportunity fashion design – although if that were completely true there would be a men’s version of the this coat in the mini length.

Military

 Pirate-style has become a whole category in and of itself in the Gothic and Lolita fashion movement. The coat on the left is from BABY, The Stars Shine Bright’s Alice and the Pirates line. Called the Vargossa Coat, it brings to mind the image of a capatain of a pirate ship. And the captain of a pirate ship would have no qualms wearing this coat if said captain liked a bell-shaped silhouette. On the right, Black Peace Now’s Button Trench Coat evokes the look of a military officer with its crisp-looking collar, belt and buttons-galore.

 While Sailor Style is popular in Lolita fashion, the two coats pictures above demand to be taken a little more seriously than the style is normally portrayed. On the left the Black Peace Now Sailor Coat is all business, while the Alice and the Pirates Royal Star Long Coat on the right takes a more dramatic approach to Sailor Style.

Another belted trench coat style from Atelier Boz in men’s, women’s and women’s mini styles. Stand collar decorated with buttons evokes the pin decorations military officers wear on their collars to denote their rank. How many buttons would make you a 4-star general of style?

Wenn eine Raupe sich lange genug dick und rund gemampft hat, dann kommt irgendwann der Tag, an dem sie anfängt, sich zu verpuppen: Sie hört plötzlich auf, sich durch den Blätterwald zu mampfen, igelt sich ein in einen Kokon, und ist nicht mehr zu sehen, verschwunden aus der Welt, sozusagen.

Sie wartet und wartet und verändert sich und verändert sich. Wie lange? Na, bis alles fertig ist.

Aber wenn dann alles fertig ist, dann macht es Plopp, weil der Kokon geplatzt ist. Und dann ist sie wieder da. Irgendwie jedenfalls. Allerdings nicht mehr als dicke, träge Raupe, sondern als etwas, dass fliegen kann.

Mich beflügelt, etwas lange Vorgehabtes getan zu haben. Etwas, dass ich noch nie in meinem Leben gemacht habe. Aber ich habe es getan.

Seit Montag Abend hat die Unterföhringer Kulturlandschaft Zuwachs bekommen. Nein, ich habe keine Schmetterlings-Zuchtfarm gegründet. Oder vielleicht doch?

Wie auch immer. Seit Montag hat Unterföhring eine Improtheater-Gruppe. Ich habe einfach eine gegründet, weil es hier noch keine gab.

Wer mitspielen will, ist herzlich eingeladen, wir suchen noch Leute, die gern einmal ein wenig verrückt spielen wollen. Virtuell zu spinnen ist toll. Aber in der physischen Welt zu spinnen eben auch.

Ach ja: Schön, wieder hier zu sein!

Two versions of Angelic Pretty's Milky-chan Fawn Coat in polkadots and solid

Last time we shared our top picks from the 2009/2010 Lolita winter coat collections. We’re continuing our coverage with a theme that was hard to miss – animal prints and motifs. Rabbit ears and leopard prints are old standbys that are accompanied by this year’s growing trend – fawns. But don’t make the mistake of thinking the brands aren’t taking risks, one succeeds in giving us a coat featuring an animal that is not at all predictable.

Fawns

First up, and pictured above, are the polka-dot and solid versions of Angelic Pretty’s Milky-chan Coat. On the left is the polka-dot print version with solid colored fur. On the right is the solid version with a spotted fawn print fur. The coat features an adorable Milky-chan applique and this may be an abosolute first for a piece of clothing that features a fawn-earred hoodie.

 This winter BABY, The Stars Shine Bright is releasing a few items feauring a heart leapard print fur. The first is a knee-length coat with a cat-ear hoodie and ribbon drawstrings accented by heart leapard print pom poms. The second is a cape featuring a double-button enclosure with pom pom-style buttons.

As popular as bear-themed clothing is is in Lolita, there is only one winter coat option this time around and that’s the casual Teddy Hoodie Jacket from Metamorphose. This coat is made of a boucle knit which gives it all its texture and has a bear-eared hoodie. The casual look of this coat might not be the most versatile for a Lolita wardrobe but it could be a nice compliment to a casual Lolita look or a cute ouji style.

Bunnies

Peace Now Usagi Fur Cape in black and and Peace Now Usagi Fur Trim Coat in black and white

Speaking of casual, Peace Now has both a cape and coat featuring casual styles and bunny-eared hoodies. The cape features fur trim and an embroided crown logo on the chest which is versatile enough to use in a Sweet, Punk, Casual or cutesy Gothic Lolita style and could also be used in Ouji styles. Peace Now’s second bunny-eared offering is plaid patterened casual coat more suited to a Punk or Casual Lolita look as well as Boystyle.

Innoncent World Usagi Goblin Print Coat

For a more refined and cute look, Innocent World has  a goblin-print coat featuring a stuffed bunny with a pink neckbow. The coat has a hidden button enclosure panel and features clean lines accented only by a large fur collar and a waist tie.

Roosters

Metamorphose's inappropriately named "Cock Embroidery Coat"

And finally, in the WTF category, Metamorphose surprises us all by featuring a Rooster in one of its winter coat designs. Not a hen or cute baby chicks, a grown rooster. What’s more they’ve given the coat a rather inappropriate name – “Cock Embroidery Coat.” The rooster design looks more like something that you would find tattooed on a yakuza gangster, but Metamorphose is obviously chasing after a specific type of customer with this design. With the gold embroidery, fur and leather trimmings, I could see this coat being a big hit with steampunk-influenced Lolitas.

While the rest of us were boiling away in the summer sun, the Lolita brands were quietly releasing  their 2009/2010 collection of winter coats to their blogs and reservation pages. There are so many designs this year, it’s impossible to fit it all in one post, so we’re breaking it up – starting with our top picks.

Sweet Houndstooth

First up  are two great coats from Angelic Pretty and Metamorphose featuring a houndstooth print and a double breast design. Both coats are accented by faux fur trim and waist ribbons. Despite the similarities, Angelic Pretty’s coat has a sweeter style while the Metamorphose coat, with it’s collar set askew, has a slightly more elegant appearance.

Collars & Capes

Capes have been a mainstay of winter coat designs for a while, however this year the fur collar makes its return. Innocent World’s fur collar features a refreshing take on animal prints with a design that mimics the spots on a fawn. The  Rosetta Cape by BABY, The Stars Shine Bright features features a warm wool material that adds a nice textured look to a classic cape design.

Warm Wool

And finally, the last set of favorites includes Innocent World’s Rotta coat which featueres a simple high-waisted design and  faux fawn-print fur. BABY, The Stars Shine Bright’s Charlottie Coat is a classic design with texturized wool and a nice balance of bows and lacey trim. Finally, Victorian Maiden reminds us that not all winter coats have to be knee-length with a cute and simple military-like design.
