a little while back, i was pretty anti-chick musicians. not for any particular reason other than i hadn’t found any that really struck me. so, i suppose it wasn’t so much an adamant stance as much as it was a passive penchant towards men who made music.

as i am about to post something about one of my favorite albums of this year, i realize that i’m listening to lots and lots of broads as of late.

and thus, ladies and gentlemen, i introduce you to Ms. Emily Haines, front woman of the fabulous band Metric, and her solo project: Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton. (i prefer Metric to the latter, but that’s neither here nor there).

this woman rules in so many ways.

as an added bonus, here is the NPR recording of the show i went to in june at the 930 Club in Washington, DC.

So, this week, for a chem lab, our teacher decided to make us bake cookies. He gave us Metric Measur

So, this week, for a chem lab, our teacher decided to make us bake cookies. He gave us Metric Measurements, told us to convert them to US form, and bake those darn cookies. AND bring them to class on tuesday so we can have a mini ‘party’ after our test. party my @ss.
Let’s just say….. I can’t cook for my life.
Patrick and I decided to work together to make cookies. Being azn and saving money.
BAD idea. Put two cooking failures together and you get an even bigger failure.
First thing first, we get our supplies out. And we run into our first wall :: We have no measuring supplies. Patrick’s mommie said, ‘ Just use the liquid one. It’s fine.’ (oh the beauty and simplicity of asian-ness)
We decide that is unacceptable and run like mad to the computer to see if anybody around in the area is willing to let us steal their supplies. We wasted half an hour searching for someone, and another 45 minutes WALKING to someone’s house, IN THE PITCH DARK.
what ever happened to streetlights?!
anyways. we saw a kitty XD it followed us around for a bit ____<
Well. We followed the recipe EXACTLY. And the first batch came out looking like…….
a blob of melted butter.
*looks at each other* huh?
So we dump in some more flour… yeah yeah yeah.
STILL nasty blob. tastes decent…if not for that NASTY NASTY BUTTER BLOB.
His dad ended up salvaging the situation. Both our parents came over and stared at the cookies and said incredulously ‘Are these COOKED?!?!?! o____O” ‘
Yes they were.
So, the next morning, I pick up the salvaged cookies, and bring them to school(half asleep)
I didn’t even get to TRY a cookie, since I only had like….9.
~~~CHEM CLASS~~~
*ohkay you can eat your cookies now*
So we compare cookie failures. Everybody fails at cooking apparently. LOL
I take a bite. And my tooth cracks. Well not exactly, but the cookie has teeth marks. No Joke. I threw it at the table, and I swear the table got a dent. I’m glad my Chem class has a sense of humor. We all laughed like hell.
I guess praying to the kitchen gods before cooking doesn’t always work neh?
Emily Haines is the high energy lead singer of the band Metric. Before Metrics new album Fantasies was released (which in my opinion is one of the best new albums this year) the band took a little break. Emily Haines continued to do the music thing and released Knives Don’t Have Your Back.
This is a video of one of her solo performances it is kind of a cover of Anarchy In The Uk by The Sex Pistols -but not really, either way i love it.
Thanks to everybody who commented on my last blog post! I really appreciate you sharing your playlis
Thanks to everybody who commented on my last blog post! I really appreciate you sharing your playlists with everyone and introducing us to some great new music!
As I was responding to your comments, something hit me. You guys have shown us an incredible ammount of support over the last few years. You’ve called your local DJs to request our music. You’ve come to our shows and purchased our CDs. And your votes have caused us to win more contests and get onto more playlists than I could count. Each of you has helped make what we do possible.
Last week was really cool because we had twenty people contribute to our post! But, our anlaytics show that hundreds of people read it. Why is that? I’m not sure. But I feel that it is – at least in some part – due to the fact that so often the creation and delivery of art is a one way street. I want to change that; so I’d like to invite you to take a moment to do three things:
Visit atris.wordpress.com (This will be more fun if everyone goes to the same page.)
Scroll down to the comment box and introduce yourself. Write a few words about anything you’d like. How did you first hear our music? What city are you from? What are your favorite movies? Pretend we just met at a coffee shop. If you’d like share your blog address, Twitter ID or someplace where we and other people can learn more about you that would be great too!
Check the box that says Notify me of follow-up comments via email.
Please don’t do this for us, do this for yourself and for everyone. It takes a certain amount of bravery to put yourself out there; but it’s worth it. We love to get to know people with similar interests, ideas, and opinions. And it’s really cool when group discussions are started. If you have something in common with someone who posts, let him or her know! It makes me feel great to see people responding to my comments, and I love to chime back in to share my thoughts.
Looking forward to meeting you!
-Mason
If the title wasn’t obvious enough Princess Wonderboot’s blog is going to be posting her favorite albums of 2009 periodically. I thought since she’s doing it why shouldn’t I as well! So here goes the first album that I think should be in the list of best albums of 2009!
Metric’s album Fantasies is def different than their previous albums such as Grow Up And Blow Away and Live It Out but I think that’s what makes it special. They had a lot more time and money to put in to this album compared to last two as well. Fantasies is the kind of album you can just pop in and instantly start singing the lyrics to the songs. I’m also slightly biased though, since Metric is one of my favorite bands. hehe.
Every time a 0 is involved with the turning year, people tend to go crazy over “the best _____
Every time a 0 is involved with the turning year, people tend to go crazy over “the best _____ of the decade”. Lists come out about music and movies and tv shows and whatever. Well, I decided to do that. Because I’m a dork. What I ended up doing is a list of things for every year since the year 2000. I will talk about some of them and leave links to others that I think are fantastical and that I belive you (whoever you are) might enjoy. So. Here we go. Expect to see some bands that repeat, and some that you know I like, if you like me:
2000
Does anyone remember how fantastically catchy ‘Bohemian Like You’ was? The silly video with the karaoke-thing, etcetera? There was a lot of decent music coming out around this time, and I remember being consistently barraged by good albums. This wouldn’t continue through the rest of the decade. Californication would be the last time I would enjoy RHCP as a band.
Dandy Warhols (song – Bohemian Like You); Red Hot Chili Peppers (album – Californication); Smashing Pumpkins/Foo Fighters/A Perfect Circle(show – Summersault – Winnipeg Stadium); Nine Inch Nails (video – Into the Void)
2001
In 2001 I succumbed to sexy pop for a favorite song. Seriously. That song is awesome. Frusciante’s album was magical, and I think my video of the year is really the only choice.
Kylie Minogue (song – Can’t get you out of my head); John Frusciante (album – To Record only Water for Ten Days); Tragically Hip (show – Winnipeg Arena); Fatboy Slim (video – Weapon of Choice)
2002
Dave Grohl makes the list twice as a drummer in this year, and probably would have taken the album too, but from out of nowhere came what would change my mind about Canadian music in that I ended up following almost every project that Broken Social Scene had outside of it’s main band after hearing the album and seeing them live.
Queens Of The Stone Age (song – Go With the Flow); Broken Social Scene (album – You Forgot it in people); Broken Social Scene – (show – Pyramid Cabaret); Tenacious D (video – Tribute)
2003
I remember the moment I fell in love with Sit down Stand up. It was on the eve of the album coming out, and Radiohead played a live show that was broadcasted to Silver City theatres in Canada. When that song reached the crescendo into the fast ‘raindrops’ part, I was almost on the edge of my seat. Which I could also say about the Metric show. They were second on a bill of three that featured Hot Hot Heat as the main act, and were still relatively new, but downright sexy and exciting to watch. I’ve since seen them six more times.
Radiohead (song – Sit Down, Stand Up); Mars Volta (album – De-Loused in the Comatorium); Metric (show – Pyramid Cabaret); Buck 65 (video – Wicked and Weird)
2004
The second time a John Frusciante album makes my favorite albums. This album is widely regarded as his most ‘mainstream’ and is a fantastic, great-amazing thing, just like the Bowie concert, which was the last concert I ever saw at the ol’ Winnipeg arena.
Secret Machines (song – Nowhere Again); John Frusciante (album – Shadows Collide with People); David Bowie (show – Winnipeg Arena); DFA 1979 (video – Black History Month)
2005
I’ll never forget how many phone calls I got when Nine Inch Nails annouced that they’d be coming here. It was the first time I was going to see them, after being a fan since 1994. My phone rang off the hook, and for one song during that show, so did my emotions. I kinda quietly, completely lost it, and felt like a dummy. Ha! By the way, that Esthero video’s freakin’ hot, and I agree with every sentiment in it.
Sufjan Stevens (song – Come On! Feel the Illinoise!); Fantomas (album – Suspended Animation); Nine Inch Nails (show – MTS Centre) Esthero (video – We R in Need of a Musical Revolution)
2006
I saw Wintersleep by myself in front of about 30 people, and skipped work to get there. When I talked to the singer about this, he dedicated a song to me. How nice. As far as Nausea goes, I don’t know what it is about that song, but something in it drives me nuts. It’s way too good and it doesn’t even realize it.
Beck (song – Nausea); Regina Spektor (album – Begin To Hope); Wintersleep (show – The Collective); Eagles of Death Metal (video – Boy’s Bad News)
2007
National Anthem of Nowhere has become my most listened to track on last.fm, and I think the Wintersleep album has since become one of my most listened to albums. They will both continue to rise in numbers. If I did a song by song and album by album breakdown, these two would make somewhere within the top three. And it’s pretty cool that I got to see Mike Patton in any of his 34i83902439024 bands, but Peeping Tom blew me away.
Apostle of Hustle (song – National Anthem of nowhere); Wintersleep (album – Welcome to the Night Sky); Peeping Tom (show – Trocadero); Feist (video – 1234)
2008
God, In Rainbows is great. And Secret Machines live, that’s something so completely underrated, I don’t even know how to describe it to you. The power that they have to get an audience going, is a sight to behold and yet there were so few people there that I was kind of disappointed in the turnout. Oh, and yes, I realize that Feist gets the video 2 years running for the same album, but they’re both great videos.
Kaki King (song – Montreal); Radiohead (album – In Rainbows); Secret Machines (show – Pyramid); Feist (video – I feel it all)
2009
I know, it hasn’t been that long, but Them Crooked Vultures was exactly the album I wanted it to be. So there. And as far as Spookey’s song goes, this is the second time I’ve talked about it in my blog. Previously appeared in my “songs you won’t see in Guitar Hero or Rock band“, and it’s just something to behold. Metric’s video was perfect, it was the video that I wanted them to have. Something sweet and cute instead of overtly dorky like all of their other videos. As far as Leonard Cohen’s concert goes, I hadn’t been a huge fan beforehand, but was introduced, and BECAME a large fan because of how amazing that concert was. Everything he did was perfect. The singing, the sounds, the engagement with the audience was fantastic. Top five concerts in my life, that one.
Spookey Ruben (song – Mechanical Royalty); Them Crooked Vultures (album – Them Crooked Vultures); Leonard Cohen (show – MTS Centre); Metric (video – Gimme Sympathy)
Metric is a Canadian indie rock band most known for their dark yet luring lyrics. Their songs have been featured in several hit TV series such as Gossip Girl and Grey’s Anatomy. One of their bigger and more hits, “Help, I’m Alive,” recently played on an episode of the CW’s The Vampire Diaries, an alluring fantasy-drama series centered around the life of a young woman who falls in love with a handsome vampire. Metric’s heart thumping beats complimented with an alternating cadence works well with the characters’ blossoming love affair as it is ignited in passion but almost forbidden to catch flame.
I’m really enjoying it!
For an album about relationships and inner monologue and only a few (okay fine several) completely fantastic scenarios, this sounds like it was recorded in space. Space, the way space looked in a B movie inspired by 2001 but made by fans of Sun Ra. Really! Just think about it for a minute, I know you’ll agree.
The layered synthetic sounds in this album put a cold glittering sheen on what is otherwise almost flawless pop song writing. The structures are simple: verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus repeats and then fades, over and over again. The lyrics are often minimal, a spare approach mirrored in Haines’ vocal technique, where her volume ranges from “quiet” to “not quite as quiet” with only a few notable exceptions.
Haines’ vocals add a stoic layer to songs otherwise made epic and grandiose with all the tricks written for dance music since disco. Looping riffs, vertical key changes, double-time thrumming basslines, it all combines into songs that are viciously catchy and itchably danceable. I can confirm this because I listened to this album quite a bit in the car, and was accused of tapping the pedals in time to the music, thus making my passenger somewhat carsick. The price of good songwriting, I say.
However, as you find yourself singing along to the lyrics, you start to notice how subtle, dark and witty Haines gets. There’s a mix of self deprecation and immensely sarcastic self-empowerment floating through her music, perfect for the world-weary twenty-something gir- I mean, woman, who likes looking good and telling people off and being lonely about it afterwards.
So, where and when would I put on this album? Well, any of the upbeat songs are great additions to your favourite dance mix. I can see “Sick Muse” helping amp up the ante while you predrink, and “Satellite Mind”, with its NES bassline, might take a few bars to get heavy but you wouldn’t be able to resist it if it came on while you were sulking at the edge of the dancefloor. “Stadium Love” is the song for when you’re too tired to be dancing but too high on endorphins to stop just yet. I’d save “Twilight Galaxy” for the quiet car ride home after a passionately futile night out with your distant lover, though. It’s the beautiful mood killer of the evening/album.
In summary, let me recommend this album to anyone who wants to pretend they are partying in the future and it is even lonelier than the 80s in space, and catchier.
Ainda não sei muito bem qual a dimensão desta banda no meu coração. Ainda não sei se os hei-de medir
Ainda não sei muito bem qual a dimensão desta banda no meu coração. Ainda não sei se os hei-de medir em centímetros, metros, ou quilómetros quadrados. A primeira vez que os ouvi, fiquei com a sensação de serem demasiado distorcidos, eléctricos e ásperos, características que nem sempre me atraem, pois para barulho e distorções já chega o que ouço todos os dias no trabalho…e não, não é música, é mesmo de ruídos e de mentes que falo! Por esta ordem.
Metric
Pois bem, depois de ter decidido dar mais uma chance a esta banda, que já não é nova nestas andanças, lá comecei a gostar mais das suas sonoridades e afinal acabo por constatar que são bem mais harmoniosos e melódicos do que me tinham parecido na primeira audição. Não sei se ainda não acabo por “desclassificá-los” de novo por serem demasiado afinadinhos, vamos lá ver!
A origem da banda está plantada em Toronto (sim, mais uma grande criação canadiana) e os seus trabalhos já remontam a 2003, altura em que editaram “Old World Underground, where are you now?” ao que seguiu, um par de anos depois, “Live t Out”, aclamado pela crítica da América do Norte como dos melhores trabalhos alternativos da época. O último trabalho, “Fantasies” é bem recente e tem gozado de algum, pouco, airplay nas nossas tristes rádios nacionais. Aqui deixarei três amostras de três canções. Um misto soft melódico / asperozinho, só para ver se entendem o porquê do meu dilema. E depois digam-me , vamos gostar deles a centímetros quadrados, a quilómetros quadrados, ou a metro é que está bem?
Com dificuldade conseguimos encontrar informações sobre a banda Metric. Consideravelmente famosa nos
Com dificuldade conseguimos encontrar informações sobre a banda Metric. Consideravelmente famosa nos Estados Unidos e no Canadá, a banda, liderada por Emily Haines, e tema do programa, é quase desconhecida no Brasil. Portanto, decidimos postar um texto de Isabel Arruda que encontramos no site da Cidade Web Rock, que é recheado de informações sobre a banda.
Uma banda como a Metric, que tem sua vocalista nascida em Nova Delhi, na Índia, criada em Ontário, no Canadá, e que ainda desfruta de uma cidadania americana, só poderia, de fato, gerar confusão quanto ao seu lugar de origem. O grupo formou-se em Nova Iorque, nos Estados Unidos, no início da carreira teve uma importante passagem por Londres, na Inglaterra, mas firmou-se na mesma província em que Emily Haines cresceu, fazendo muitos fãs pensarem que se trata de uma banda canadense.
Emily – que deixou a Índia aos três anos de idade – sempre foi muito influenciada pelo gosto musical do pai, o poeta Paul Haines. Paul sempre teve o costume de gravar para a filha fitas cassetes com raras versões de música eletrônica, com nomes como Carla Bley e Robert Wyatt. Na adolescência, seguindo os passos de seus pais, Emily entrou para Escola de Artes de Etobicoke, em Ontário. Lá, conheceu os estudantes Amy Millan e Kevin Drew, que mais tarde formaram a banda de rock alternativo hHead, na qual Emily chegou a colaborar. Mas antes disso, ainda na escola, Haines e Amy Millan fundaram sua primeira banda, no começo dos anos 90, porém, começaram a gravar as primeiras canções somente quando já faziam parte da Universidade British Columbia, em Vancouver, também no Canadá. Em 1996, os amigos chegaram a distribuir o EP “Cut in Half and Also Double”, com um número bem reduzido de cópias.
Enquanto Emily trilhava seus passos pelo Canadá, James Shaw, estudante da escola de música de Boston, nos Estados Unidos, formou uma banda com seus amigos de turma, Torquil Campbell e Chris Seligman, que o convenceram a mudar com eles para Nova Iorque e ingressar na famosa escola de música Juilliard.
Após três anos estudando na instituição, Shaw havia adquirido um considerável conhecimento clássico, mas não estava gostando da rotina tradicional do ensino, então, em 1998, retornou para Toronto. Foi nesta época que, através de amigos em comum na cena musical local, Haines e Shaw se conheceram. Em pouco tempo, James mudou-se para a cidade de Montreal, para morar com Emily, e juntos começaram a misturar seus projetos pessoais, resultando numa perfeita sintonia entre os dois, que deu origem a músicas como “Butcher”, “The People”, “The Battlecry”, “The Mandate” e “The Lifestyle”, que comporam o EP “Mainstream”.
No final de 1998, James Shaw voltou a morar em Nova Iorque, desta vez acompanhado de Emily e, novamente, do amigo Chris Seligman. Na cidade, eles alugaram um loft que nos próximos dois anos teria como inquilino alguns dos futuros integrantes das bandas americanas Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars e TV on the Radio. Em 1999, Shaw e Haines encontraram o nome ideal para sua parceria: decidiram chamar o grupo de Metric, em homenagem a sincronização perfeita de seu dueto musical. Metric, além de ser uma unidade de medida, também pode ser usado como uma medida precisa, uma métrica como a dos poemas, ou seja, os dois “encaixavam” perfeitamente, em termos musicais. No mesmo ano, a Warner Bros. Records demonstrou interesse pelo grupo, que rapidamente fechou um acordo com a gravadora.
Nesse meio tempo, um produtor de Londres teve acesso as demos gravadas pela banda e viu que o grupo tinha um grande potencial para o sucesso. Apostando nisso, convidou o Metric para ir ao Reino Unido, afim de fechar um possível acordo de gravação. Emily e James acabaram indo para a Inglaterra no começo de 2000 e firmaram um contrato com a Chrysalis UK. Com a ajuda do produtor Stephen Hague, que já havia trabalhado com importantes grupos dos anos 80 como New Order, Erasure e Pet Shop Boys, o Metric trabalhou em um novo material que faria parte de seu álbum de estreia. Essas novas músicas formaram a base do estilo eclético, que fez com que o grupo, desde cedo, estivesse musicalmente à frente de seu tempo. Mas logo a dupla se cansou de ficar apenas gravando demos e decidiu retornar a Nova Iorque para colocar, de uma vez por todas, a banda em prática. Em novembro, estavam de volta ao loft do Brooklyn.
Nos primeiros meses de 2001, o Metric continuou a trabalhar no material para o primeiro álbum. Em abril, o disco estava terminado e Haines e Shaw optaram por fechar novo contrato com uma gravadora independente, a Restless Records de Los Angeles, para aparentemente lançá-lo. Mas por algum motivo, acharam que não era a hora de colocá-lo no mercado e “Grow Up and Blow Away” permaneceu guardado na gaveta até conhecer a luz do dia, somente em julho de 2007, apenas com algumas poucas alterações no seu line-up. Este CD foi bem elogiado. Na opinião de alguns, levou o Metric de volta ao nível de “Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?”, o disco debut, considerado por muitos como o melhor da banda.
O CD de estreia – de fato – do grupo, que agora contava com Emily Haines nos vocais, James Shaw na guitarra, Josh Winstead no baixo e Joules Scott-Key na bateria, veio somente em 2003. “Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?”, recebeu disco de ouro, no Canadá, pelas 40 mil cópias vendidas. Grande parte dessas vendas ocorreu devido ao contagiante single “Dead Disco”, que tocou pelas pistas de dança de todo o mundo.
Ao primeiro álbum do Metric, seguiram-se “Live It Out” (2005), segundo trabalho lançado da banda, e o início da carreira solo de Emily Haines. Este novo CD recebeu o título de melhor álbum, em 2006, pela Polaris Music Prize, premiação mais importante da música canadense e foi indicado ao Juno Awards na categoria de Melhor Álbum Alternativo, no mesmo ano.
O ano de 2006, definitivamente, foi o ano do Metric: a consagração definitiva veio quando o grupo foi escolhido a dedo pelos Rolling Stones para abrir a histórica turnê “A Bigger Bang Tour”, no Madison Square, em Nova Iorque. Mas a boa fase não parou por ai: a banda estourou de vez, fora do Canadá, quando duas de suas músicas, “Monster Hospital” e “Police and the Private” entraram para a trilha sonora de dois famosos seriados americanos: Grey´s Anatomy e C.S.I. Miami. A banda passou a fazer parte da cena mais importante da música alternativa dos últimos cinco anos, o novo indie rock canadense. Com avalanches de guitarras angulares, elementos eletrônicos e momentos de explosão ao lado de outros delicados, o quarteto passou a ser dono de um som consistente e atual.
Em junho do ano passado, a banda veio pela primeira (e até agora única) vez ao Brasil para participar da sexta edição do Motomix – The ROKR Festival, logo após se apresentar no festival californiano Coachella. O Metric fez um show gratuito no dia 28, no Parque do Ibirapuera, em São Paulo, ao lado do sexteto britânico The Go! Team e do trio, também britânico, Fujiya & Miyagi, além de também ter dividido o palco com as bandas nacionais Stop Play Moon, Venus Volts e Nancy. Apesar desta vinda às terras tupiniquins, o grupo continua meio desconhecido por aqui. Mas, a julgar pela agenda de shows deles, parece que é só por aqui…
O quarto e último álbum de estúdio, “Fantasies”, saiu em abril deste ano, depois de quase três anos sem lançamentos. O disco é uma coleção de dez canções que vai do punk ao new wave e que, em certos momentos, chega a lembrar a sonoridade de grupos como Blondie, Garbage e Laydtrop. Os destaques do trabalho ficaram com “Front Row”, “Gimmie Sympathy”, que teve seu clipe gravado em apenas um take, e o primeiro single liberado, “Help, I´m Alive” – com seus elementos eletrônicos, batida frenética e refrão que gruda – que já conta com mais de 20 remixes diferentes feitos por diversos Djs. As demais músicas do álbum se parecem um tanto umas com as outras, seja pelo ritmo frenético, seja pelo uso de sintetizadores. A exceção fica para lenta e melancólica “Blindness”.
Se o Metric irá se consagrar aqui no Brasil, como o fez no Canadá e nos Estados Unidos, ninguém sabe, mas é certo que nada é impossível para a efervescente vocalista. A front-woman Emily Haines é um capítulo à parte na composição do quarteto, além de já ter sido eleita por diversos veículos como uma das mulheres mais bonitas do rock (a última votação ocorreu em maio deste ano, pelo site Gigwise, que colocou Haines à frente de beldades como Hayley Williams, do Paramore, Katie White, do The Ting Tings e Juliette Lewis, na lista das “25 Mulheres Mais Sexys do Rock”), Emily está envolvida em mais dois projetos paralelos, além do Metric: o grupo Broken Social Scene, que reúne cerca de 19 músicos de Toronto, e a banda Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton. Isto sem falar das participações como convidada nos álbuns de Stars KC Accidental, Delerium, The Stills e Jason Collett. E quem pensa que Emily se aventura apenas no meio musical, está enganado. Em 2004, a moça atuou, junto com seus companheiros de banda, no filme “Clean”, do diretor Oliver Assavas, que ganhou importante título no Festival de Cannes.
