With its whimsically shaped ventilation cowls and lush foliage, the skygarden at Beddington Zero (fossil) Energy Development (BedZED) in England looks like something out of a Dr. Seuss book.

Located in Wallington, a suburb south of London, BedZED is also Britain’s largest mixed-use, carbon-neutral green development.

Built in 2002, BedZED features 82 affordable housing units and 27,000 square feet (2,500 square meters) of work and office space. The complex boasts many green features: It was constructed from reclaimed steel, wood certified as sustainable by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), and as many local materials as possible.

The buildings are heavily insulated and feature large, south-facing windows to take advantage of natural heating and light. Offices face north to reduce air-conditioning costs in the summer. (See pictures of floating green cities.)

According to BedZED’s designers, BioRegional, the Peabody Trust, and Bill Dunster Architects, the appliances are energy efficient. The complex is festooned with solar panels, and a combined heat and power plant runs on tree-clipping waste. BedZED reportedly uses about 90 percent less energy for heating and 25 percent less electricity than conventional buildings use.

All the fixtures are designed to save water, and rainwater is collected. Sewage is also treated on-site through biological processes.

BedZED is an example of a growing number of buildings that are designed to be “net zero,” meaning they produce as much energy as they use (Walgreens recently announced plans to build the first net zero energy store).

To some, net zero is the logical extension of a green building movement that has been growing steadily from the 1970s, when people started putting up solar panels and boosting insulation, after decades of cheap fossil fuels in the early and mid-20th century.

“It’s critical to look at buildings as whole systems,” David Bergman, a green architect, professor, and author of the book Sustainable Design: A Critical Guide, recently told National Geographic.

“How much can they be self-sufficient or impact free, both in terms of their materials and internal systems, and how they affect communities?” he asked

Use the same security precautions that you would use when traveling in any large city. I keep my wallet in my FRONT POCKET when traveling in Manila or any other large city. If you are traveling by TAXI, be sure the doors are all LOCKED and write down the drivers license plate number which is usually displayed on the rear passenger window. Carry only enough cash with you that you will need for the day. Don’t open up your wallet and show thousands of dollars (or even thousands of Philippine pesos) or you could be targeted. Manila is no more dangerous than any other large city Keep safe while you travel. I have lived in the Philippines for seven months in 2012 and I lived in various locations in Metro Manila for three months. I traveled by taxi, elevated train (LRT/MRT) as well as the Philippine National radio (PNR) and never encountered any problems. I walked the streets of Santa Cruz, Quiapo, Intramuros and Malate on numerous occasions but always in the daytime. I stayed in my room at night, only because my night vision is not very good. Keep safe and secure when traveling in Manila!

The average fair to get around Manila could be, on the average, from 500p to 1000p (up to $25.US). If you are traveling from NIAA (The Manila Airport to ANYWHERE in Manila, expect the fare to START at $30.US and go up from there depending on your destination.

Documentarian Marnie Manicad, the docu’s director, told the Inquirer: “The ‘Innovasians’ series features different inventions from all over Asia. I wanted to showcase a unique invention from the Philippines: air-cleaning paint.”

Manicad was tasked to make the 10-minute docu on a type of paint that contains photocatalytic titanium dioxide (TiO2) which turns ordinary water vapor to free radicals that break down two components of smog: NOx (highly reactive gases containing nitrogen and oxygen) and VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

A Filipino company Pacific Paint is behind this innovation

—which it developed with United Kingdom’s Cristal and is now available in the market under the brand name, Boysen KNOxOut, Manicad clarified.

Solid info

Manicad made sure that the docu’s informative component was solid—so that it wouldn’t come across as mere propaganda or an advertorial piece.

“From the very start, we made sure that we balanced the facts and information that will be included in the docu,” she explained. “Of course, it is factual to mention the product and what it can do to the environment, but we made it a point [to ensure] that our resource persons’ interviews were backed by studies.”

Rest assured, the docu passed through the network’s stringent screening process—the same drill that Manicad had become familiar with when she directed the docu “Inside: Malacañang” for NGC last year.

“The channel is very strict with content and technical quality.

Our script was screened by NGC teams in Hong Kong and Washington DC before it was voiced by (narrator) Joonee Gamboa,” she recalled.

As such, she made certain that she was equipped with “extensive research” before embarking on this project.

“NGC is one of the most credible documentary channels in the world,” she said. Since the docu will be aired on NGC, it will “highlight a Filipino achievement and invention to combat air pollution” on an international platform.

Telling this story in an engaging manner was a big challenge, she owned up. “We not only needed to come up with the best visuals, but viewers need to be able to feel, smell and appreciate those images.”

Feel-good docu

“This Filipino invention has caught the attention of first-world countries. It’s inspiring.

After the success of the Street Olympics, Unilab Fit To Win Youth Club members convened at TheBar@1951 in Malate, Manila to express their views on love, family, and friendship.

Entitled “Unilab Fit To Win Expression Session”, the event aimed to enhance club members’ interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships through a panel discussion and open forum, where participants freely exchanged opinions and insights on relevant youth issues and other relationship-centered topics. Club members interacted with each other and listened to insights from featured speakers Ramon Bautista, Arun Gogna and Joji Racelis.

Expression Session has let Unilab FTW Youth Club members chill, relax and enjoy the night of music, dialogue and laughter with special guests Ramon Bautista, Johnoy Danao, Arun Gogna and Joji Racelis.

“The Unilab Fit To Win Expression Session aims to create and foster healthy relationships with others and with their own selves. Because the youth are often subjected to the many stress that come with daily school life, this is the chance for them to unwind and mingle with other college students,” said Barry Barrientos, Unilab Fit To Win Project Lead. “This is the perfect venue for them to share problems such as insecurity issues, friendship dilemmas, and love queries.

The event was sponsored by the Unilab Fit To Win Youth Club, a pioneering health and wellness youth club that provides college students access to various wellness programs, events and activities beneficial to their overall wellbeing.

Unilab Fit To Win Expression Session tackled self-acceptance and optimism, and creating and maintaining healthy relationships. “We wanted to create a place where Unilab Fit To Win Youth Club members can be at ease with themselves and with each other as they proceed onwards in creating a healthier lifestyle for themselves,” said Barrientos. “Holistic wellness is not just about the body — it includes the complete balance of mind and spirit, too.”

Speaker Ramon Bautista, known for his comedic wit and loyal online following, shared his thoughts on the younger generation’s outlook of life and love.

Photo shows (from left): Inspirational speaker Arun Gogna, Internet sensation Ramon Bautista and family counselor Joji Racelis shared their views on spiritual, romantic and family issues at the Unilab Fit To Win (FTW) Youth Club’s Expression Session.

“For those who keep on searching for love—there are more important things we can do other than finding our one true love, especially if you’re still young. You need to find yourself first before building a healthy, meaningful relationship with another,” said Bautista in the vernacular. “Work on being a better you, rediscover yourself.”

Panelists Arun Gogna and Joji Racelis also provided views on spiritual life and family issues, respectively. Arun Gogna is a much sought-after inspirational speaker and founder of Creative House Inc., an organization specializing in retreats, recollections and values formation seminars for companies, schools, universities and organizations. Joji Racelis is a celebrated counselor, speaker and facilitator on family issues, for schools, seminarians, private and government institutions, and various communities and organizations.

As one of the artistic hubs in Manila, TheBar@1951 (formerly known as Penguin Cafe) offers guests a combination of uniquely artistic and grungy ambience, making it the perfect setting for the Unilab Fit To Win Youth Club members to open up their innermost selves. Musical performances from artists such as acoustic singer Johnoy Danao kept the mood lively for the night.

The club is open to college students from Metro Manila. Events for the succeeding months include a summer camp activity for club members, UniSummer; Dance Therapy; Grooming and Style Workshop; Amazing Grocery Race; Leadership Training; Yoga Festival;Feeding Program; and the year-ender activity Unilab Extreme Challenge.

About the Unilab Fit To Win Youth Club

Unilab Fit To Win Youth Club is the first youth club established by Unilab to spread health awareness and instill the importance of a healthy lifestyle among college students in the country by providing them access to various wellness programs and activities beneficial to their overall well-being. The club holds various activities that provide them knowledge on exercise, nutrition, disease prevention, personal care, sleep and rest, stress management, self-acceptance and optimism, and healthy relationships to give them overall health improvement.

To quote Lourd De Veyra, “can I have my action movie back, please?”

Meet the Pinoy “Expendables”…ten years before Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Willis & co.

I grew up at a time when Fernando Poe Jr. (aka FPJ, “Da King”, “Ronnie” Poe, “Ang Panday”, the Man who would have been President) loomed large and indominable in local cinema. Lito Lapid, Rudy Fernandez (RIP), Anthony Alonzo and Dante Varona (whatever happened to them?) were not far behind in the pack, while Robin Padilla, Jestoni Alarcon, Jeric Raval and Ian Veneracion led the junior charge. The leading ladies, undoubtedly damsels in distress holding out for a hero, were the in-demand sex symbols of that period.

Jennifer Saunders’ take on the Bonnie Tyler hit “Holding Out For A Hero” (from Shrek II)

Of course, the villains cannot be discounted, with silver-haired Eddie Garcia cackling in jest as his hired guns do the dirty work (take a bow Paquito Diaz, Bomber Moran and the late Subas Herrero)

FPJ and Joseph Estrada in Baril sa Baril

Now it saddens me to see that action movies have practically become non-existent in most local producers’ annual schedules. Local movie production has become increasingly sporadic, with an inordinate focus on the youth market; therefore, if it is not romances based on couples being pushed together by the studio (or social media for that matter), there are supernatural sagas (which tend to ramp up doing the holidays) and lurid dramas dealing with marital infidelity among the (half-breed) middle class.

Heck, even the above-mentioned Robin Padilla is now doing leading-man roles (which isn’t as half bad as you might think, given his commitment to keeping fit)

Related link: ScreenJunkies list of the 10 Best Tagalog Action Movies

A great many of these Pinoy action movies dwelt on a great number of hoary clichés, but that didn’t distract from the appeal over their skewed beauty…that kind of raw verisimilitude that Hollywood-backed faux-indie hacks like Robert Rodriguez strive for in their lucid moments. Undoubtedly, a young Quentin Tarantino drew inspiration for one or two of these beauties among the video racks back in those days.

See what he does to stick it to the fuzz!!!

To sum a reply I made about Lourd De Veyra’s aforementioned SPOT.ph’s post, “My main concern is whether today’s crop of studio-built stars can credibly do action. So far I can only cite Derek Ramsey because of his build and MMA training (which don’t come cheap…heheh). Imagine the sheer ludicrousness of Sam Milby playing an NPA foot soldier? Can Gerald Anderson fire a gun and spit out colorful vernacular repartee without flinching?”

One may hope that The Bourne Legacy‘s shoot over here may spark a renaissance for the action-movie genre in these shores. One can plainly see that Thailand’s gracious hosting of Hollywood productions eager for new locations have bred the talent responsible for the Ong-Bak film series and Chocolate. If Indonesia can get its film industry on the map with the gritty The Raid: Redemption and its upcoming sequel, The Raid 2: Berandal (both of them directed by Welshman Gareth Huw Evans) why can’t we use the same to enable Filipino indie filmmakers to move out of the “gay movie” ghetto?

How To Get There: It is easy to get to Rizal park since it is located at the center of Manila’s civilization. From the airport or any hotel you can just always take a cab. It is better that you stay in a hotel within Manila vicinity. It is near LRT1 UN ave station or central station.

Attractions:

Life shouldn’t always be profound. If it were, it’d be really stale. I recently conclude

Life shouldn’t always be profound. If it were, it’d be really stale.

I recently concluded my summer stint by attending this catechism class and I found something beautiful: so many people delight in the ordinary. I’ve always been the type of person who looks at the big picture too often, who thinks too practically, who loves to arrive at the deeper meaning of things—and it’s exhausting! Now that I’m free and I’m able to talk more sincerely to the people around me, I realized how so much is missed out when we focus on the what’s important.

What I found most amusing about my classmates in these classes is their joy in dancing and singing. I like to dance and sing but not with their level of energy and joy. There’s something magical happening when you let yourself go in music. I really appreciated their simple joys in life making me reflect on mine. If they could enjoy a simple song and dance while I’m always in search of the deeper meaning in things, something’s amiss.

Also, I found most of their faith a bit child-like. This is completely fine, nothing wrong with it. But I sometimes envy them. I envy how they are able to trust without second thoughts. I guess that’s brought about their religious and training and vows of obedience. Comparing their faith to mine, I seem to have a more critical faith, something that involves a time for discernment and consultation. But, thinking about it, I think faith is also personal. If it works for you to have a child-like faith, go ahead. If not, don’t push it. Oh well. I guess I’ll just leave up to faith.

Through these people, I realized that there is beauty in simplicity. A mere appreciation at what’s in front should be enough to live a happy and content life. It’s a good reminder for me, a very tense person, to relax and enjoy the summer heat, the could-be-better quality of food at home, and the simple fact of just existing.

Finally, after spending a good three weeks with these people, I don’t think I’m cut out for the religious life. Their life is so simple, down to earth, structured, and contemplative. Sure they have recreation activities and have their occasional epic adventures, but I feel that that’s not enough for me. I’ve always been the type that’s not easily satisfied. Although some would say the deepest longing can be filled by no other than Him, I don’t believe that He’s only inside the religious community. He can be found everywhere. Right now, my calling is still in teaching. And I’ll be the best damn teacher for my students.

This summer has been fun. I was able to visit my parents in Cebu and live in our mansion of a house (as my friends like to describe it) and become like a son again. At least in Cebu everything’s arranged for me and I get to have free food and accommodation. In Cebu I was able to talk to my Dad about Dad-matters and with my Mom, family matters. Also, I was able to fulfill one of my dreams of becoming a priest by working side by side with those who live with priests. And now, as I spend the last week of my summer vacation at home in this blistering summer heat, I’m hoping that I’ll be able to accept with grace whatever comes my way.

Thank you, Summer ’13.

This week at Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge, the focus is on Steps or Stairs. We’re still on the “Which Ways” theme. Here are my top 3 picks:

1. Stepping Down at Eastwood

Taken on Christmas Eve 2012 while out and about town…edited with CaptureNX2.

2. Look-out Tower in Angono

After visiting the Angono Petroglyphs, we hung out here for a while to enjoy the view of Laguna de Bay and south-eastern Metro Manila.

3. The Doctor’s House in Antipolo

While it’s not the main subject, I loved that spiral staircase at the Doctor’s Old House at the Silangan Art Gardens in Antipolo. The doctor who owns the property converted it into an Art Garden, Museum and Gallery to showcase and support talented young artists from this area. Of course, I also love that my son is in this shot dipping his legs in the pool.
