1986 Fleer Superstar Special with Darryl Strawberry & Tim Raines

What can I say, this is a card featuring two of my favorite players from my favorite baseball era – the 1980’s!!

The card’s theme is ‘Instant Offense’ and I don’t know if a better title could have been established for these two All-star players.

Both Strawberry and Raines were multi-faceted players whose offensive skills were some of the best in the league. With blazing speed, home run power, and great control at the plate, there was nothing that these guys couldn’t do to ignite offense!!!

Another great card in my Darryl Strawberry player collection has found a new home!!!

I’m sorry about the delay, Tuesdays are usually busy nights. After some thought, the next most

I’m sorry about the delay, Tuesdays are usually busy nights. After some thought, the next most important thing for the Mets has to be the bullpen. We all know the Mets detestable bullpen in 2008. The offseason of 2008 looked like it was going to repair that. Aaron Heilman and Scott Schoeneweis traded away, Fransisco Rodriguez signed, J.J. Putz acquired in a trade, it looked like the Mets would finally have a successful bullpen. That wasn’t the case, Putz was inconsistent and hurt. Sean Green also acquired in the Putz trade was up and down. K-Rod wasn’t the K-Rod we heard about in Anaheim. Which brings me to propsition 103; sign Joe Beimel and Chad Bradford.

Let’s start with Beimel. Beimel is a lefty, and with Pedro Feliciano getting a carrer high 88 apperances, the Mets need another lefty reliever in the bullpen. Beimel in the past four seasons has a 3.17 ERA with a 1.345 WHIP, over 287 appearances averaging about 72 appearances a season. With both Beimel and Feliciano as lefty specialists that will significantly lower their appearances, leading to an improve in their stats. Furthermore, being in the NL East and rivals with the lefty heavy Phillies having two lefty’s in the bullpen isn’t suggested, it’s necessary. Speaking of the Phillies, over the past three seasons Beimel has an ERA of 2.51 against the Phillies with them batting a collective .236 average against him. In 2008 Beimel in 71 appearances, had an amazing 2.02 ERA. In the pitcher friendly Citi Field, Beimel’s stats are going to be that much better.

Chad Bradford

In 2006 Chad Bradford had a great season for the New York Mets. Bradford had a 2.90 ERA and a 1.161 WHIP in 70 appearances. For whatever reason it may be the Mets did not re-sign the right-handed submariner. Now is the proper time to make up for that mistake. In the past three seasons Bradford has a very impressive 2.89 ERA with a 1.340 WHIP. If you thought Beimel’s numbers against the Phillies were good, Bradford’s are much better, however in a short showing. In only eight games Bradford has a 0 ERA with a 0.500 WHIP, with the Phillies hitting a lousy(or amazing, depending on your perspective).056 against him. In 2006 we saw what this man can do, he can be a dominant force. He is 35 and coming off a mediocre season and the Mets can sign him for a cheap deal loaded with incentives, which will be well worth it if he returns to Chad Bradford of old. It may sound like all that’s important is beating the Phillies, well the truth is that it shouldn’t be the top thing on the list but it should be up there. The Mets must retake the NL East title, and quiet the skeptics who think the Mets are a bunch of chokers. Obviously winning a World Series, or making the playoffs will do this too, but the if the Mets have to gear their team somewhat to be able to win the season series of a team they play 19 games a season and will be their main contender for the NL East title.

Proposition 104- Jason Marquis

Another aspect of the game that would be useful to the Mets, is not measured by on the field performance. It’s an intangible. The desire to win, and having the experience of winning. As I discussed yesterday about John Lackey’s desire to win, Jason Marquis is also similar in this aspect. Before this year every year of his career Marquis was on a team which won their respective division. You could say he was at the right place at the right time, which is possible but the facts are he has a desire to win, and he has been in the position to win. He was born in New York. He told his former teammate Jeff Franceour he wants to play for the Mets. He said last week he’s “the perfect fit” for the Mets. Not that any of those make him a better player, but we know he wants to play in New York, and should be able to. To the stats. Since 2004, Marquis is 80-68 with a 4.49 ERA with a 1.412 WHIP, averaging 13 wins a season. Ok, not great, but pitching in Citi Field will improve his numbers. Marquis is a ground ball pitcher which is the key to success, especially when playing in the ban box of Citizens Bank Park nine times a year, also leading to not many extra base hits in the gaps of Citi Field. Going along with the beat the Phillies theme, the Phillies have batted .261 against Marquis in his career. Ryan Howard is 2-10 career against Marquis with no HRs and just one RBI. Jimmy Rollins is 4-34 against Marquis. Albert Pujols is 5-20 against Marquis with 0 HRs and 3 RBIs. Matt Kemp is 0-12 against Marquis. Manny Ramirez, 0-6 against Marquis. Troy Tulowitzi, 1-9 against Marquis. I think you get my drift, some of the best NL hitters, some of the best hitters in the whole baseball, some of the best hitters to ever play the game, their numbers are poor against Marquis. Although the numbers may show Marquis is a mediocre pitcher, he is clearly better than his stats, and gives his team a chance to win every time out.

Other relevant Mets news:

On my plan would also be to trade Castillo and sign Chone Figgins, however it seems like trading Castillo isn’t going to happen. However SNY.tv’s Ted Berg disagrees. Berg believes Minaya and Cubs GM Jim Henry have agreed to a deal but they are looking for a third team in the deal being the Omar does not want to take Milton Bradley. Check out Berg’s blog at TedQuarters.net.

Coming out of a horrid season, there are lots of things Mets fans want, and while the team seems to

Coming out of a horrid season, there are lots of things Mets fans want, and while the team seems to be focusing on the off the field issues, I know they are also looking into improving the production on the field.

I believe the first and most important thing to be taken care of is the pitching. After Johan Santana the starting rotation doesn’t excite me. Although John Maine, Mike Pelfrey, and yes believe it or not Oliver Perez, all have the potential to be a very good number two starter, none of them are quite ready for that responsibility, as we witnessed last season with Pelfrey. Which leads me to me proposition 101; sign John Lackey.

Over the past three seasons Lackey has a total of 42 wins with a 3.48 ERA and a WHIP of 1.235 all in the DH American League. Career against the National League Lackey is 12-4 with a 2.63 ERA and a 1.149 WHIP in 25 games. A combination of Citi Field and facing a pitcher 2-3 times a game, will make his stats even better. Another thing to like about Lackey is his desire to win. As we saw in game five of the ALCS, when Mike Scioscia came out of the dugout to take him out of the game Lackey did not want to come out. You could read his lips “This is mine! This is mine Sosh!” Not only did Lackey want to clean up his own mess but he had a tremendous desire to win the game for his team. Lackey’s desire to win would fit well in this team, especially after reports of the young kids not minding the fact when they losing games. Not only does Lackey have a great desire to win, he has won. As a rookie in 2002 he pitched game seven of the World Series, and won. In that game Lackey allowed only one earned run on four hits while striking out four in five innings, handing the game over to the bullpen to close out the game and the series. Lackey turned 31 on October 23, and barring any injuries has at least 5-6 good years ahead of him.

Propostion 102- Matt Holliday

In the summer of 2008 the Mets were on a six game winning streak with the Rockies coming into town for the weekend. The Mets won the first two to take the win streak to eight, on Sunday I had tickets. Luckily for me it was a night game, and I was able to go early to see batting practice. As the Rockies came out I was excited to see Matt Holliday tee off during BP. Yet again luckily, I was given a show. My brother and I were in awe as time in time again, pitch after pitch Holliday did just that, he gave us a show. Pitch after pitch Holliday hit it out, not just out but belted, some hitting the then in-construction Citi Field. From that moment I realized who I want the Mets left fielder of the future, Matt Holliday.

Coming off a season in which the Mets were last in the league in Home Runs(95) it is clear the Mets need more power in their lineup. Since 2006 Holliday has 119 HRs with 448 RBIs all the while maintaining a .325 average and a .962 OPS. Holliday also won three consecutive Silver Slugger awards (‘06-’08) You might say, “Oh, well he played in Colorado for most of his career so of course his numbers are high.” That’s where you’re mistaken last year between Oakland and St. Louis, Holliday hit 24 Home Runs with 109 RBIs and a .313 average.

However, there are those that are skeptical about Holliday’s defense, especially after Holliday’s drop ball in the NLDS. But, they’re mistaken. In a column for ESPN, Baseball Prospectus coulmnist Jay Jaffe compares Holliday to Jason Bay. Jaffe uses defensive metrics to show the glaring difference between the two.

“There’s no magic bullet for defensive metrics. For this look, I’ve incorporated the Runs Saved portion of John Dewan’s observation-based plus/minus system, Mitchel Lichtman’s Ultimate Zone Rating and the play-by-play version of our own Fielding Runs Above Average. Over the past three years, Holliday — playing for the Colorado Rockies, Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals — has an average plus/minus of 6, UZR of 10.3 and FRAA of 4.3.

What does it mean?

Depending upon the system, Holliday rates from 4.3 to 10.3 runs above average per year. While the various individual metrics swing about three to six runs per year, the three-system average is surprisingly stable — Holliday is around seven runs per year better than average. Only in last year’s late-season stint with the Cardinals did Holliday rate below average in any of the metrics.

Bay is a bit of a different story. Over the past three seasons — first with the Pittsburgh Pirates, then with the Red Sox — all his numbers are actually negative: His plus/minus is minus-7.3, his UZR is minus-14.3 and his FRAA is minus-11.7. Turn off the ugly.

Overall, he’s a much worse fielder than Holliday — by a whopping 18 runs per year, which is nearly two wins.”

As we can see from Jaffe’s presentation not only is Holliday a great defensive outfielder, but he is nearly two games better than the alternative. After a season where the Mets lost games because of defensive blunders, getting someone who is a great defensive player is key, especially to play the spacious left field in Citi Field.

I am aware that by signing these two players may cost up to $30 million a season, but it is well worth the investment. The Wilpons said there’s no holding back. Go for it Omar.

Part two coming tomorrow.

If I were Jeff Wilpon, I would not be a happy owner this off season. When I look at my starting pitchers, I see Johan Santana. If I looked away, then looked back again, I would see Johan Santana. At this point, I would feel a touch of nausea pass through me like Gamma Rays through the hole in the Ozone. Can we go home now, daddy? I don’t like this game no more. I wanna play something else.

Jeff. Dude. Over here. This is it; you’re playing with the Big Boys down the road apiece. I’ll tell you what; let’s you and I go over who we have, and then we can peruse the list of free agents together. Wuttaya say?

“….”

Good.

Let’s take a look at who we have on our team.

First we have Nelson Figueroa. He’s good, isn’t he?Yes. We just need to find out for what. Certainly, he’s not good enough to start for our team. But, why?Let’s not talk about him, and say we did, ok?

If you say so.

Next, John Maine. He’s good, right? He can be very good.Great. Who’s next?Wait, J.W., we have to discuss his value to our team.

We do? Why?

Because he should be our #3 starter.

Ok, he is. Next.

Jeff! He missed most of last year because his pitching arm was tired. He’s had shoulder surgery; his mechanics are off and he’s inconsistent because of that. We can hope for the best; but, at best he’s a number 4 or 5 starter.

Oh.

Mike Pelfrey is another good pitcher, but as soon as he finds himself, he regresses. Perhaps he should pitch in a city where the spotlight isn’t as bright as NY.

Well….

Next up is Oliver Perez. He can pitch…sometimes. Most of the time….Well, we might do well to have a psychoanalyst in the run way whenever he pitches.

But….

Then, we have five more question marks: Jon Niese, Fernando Nieve, Pat Misch, Tim Redding and Bobby Parnell.

Jeff, the only pitcher we have we can count on is Johan Santana. And he had elbow surgery at the end of last season. So, you see, our pitching situation is quite tenuous.

So….

So there are some possible solutions.

Really?

Well, there’s free agency and trades. The best of the free agents is John Lackey.

Is he good?

Let’s just say he’s fortunate that the rest of the free agents are no great shakes, either.

This doesn’t sound too healthy.

It’s not, dude. The only A free agent besides Lackey is Randy Wolf. Then the only pitchers left worth spending a bit of money on are: Braden Looper, Jason Marquis, Vicente Padilla, Carl Pavano and Joel Pineiro.

So, in my opinion, do whatever you need to do to get Roy Halladay from Toronto. Failing that, Lackey is the best FA in this class. Jon Garland, Pineiro and Jason Marquis might help us regain some of our respectability. It won’t be an easy off season, but with a little thought and some good analysis, we could play some meaningful game in September 2010.

One of my friends has developed a theory that the Mets have fallen into a baseball cycle wherein they advance in the playoffs every 6 years. And a quick look at the past decade gives us no reason to argue otherwise:

2000: 94-68, lose WS to bat-tossing Clemens’ Yanks.
2003: 66-95, low point of sucking.
2006: 97-65, lose NLCS to suddenly hot, crappy Cards.
2009: 70-92, injuries prevent Mets from blowing season late.
2012: ??-??, despite massive success they lose somewhere in playoffs?

Now comes the fun part where I try to picture what the 2012 non-crappy Mets will look like. Fortunately there are a few tools at my disposal to futz around with their farm system and free agents.

Using Cot’s Baseball Contracts we see that the Mets have a few players under contract in 2012 and several more under arbitration. (contracts in millions)

SP: Johan Santana – $24
CP: K-Rod – $17.5 option based on performance (somehow this will probably be enacted, but this contract is just ridiculous)
3B: David Wright – $15.25
Arbitration Players (will be signed, possibly to extended contracts)
OF: Angel Pagan
SP: Mike Pelfrey, Fernando Nieve
RP: Sean Green, Brian Stokes

First up, just looking at what they currently have, I piece together a team assuming they only sign or let go their own players and/or promote prospects. We all know this is very unlike the Mets, but bear with me as this will lay a foundation that I can gradually tear apart.

C: Josh Thole – Has no power, but can hit 1 for 3 every game.
1B: Ike Davis – Has shown promise and power. Could be up for 2011 season. And he can field.
2B/SS: Jose Reyes will probably be re-signed, but the Mets have an odd amount of prospects at SS, so one or two or all of them will be converted to 2b or traded for crap. Jordany Valdespin gets credit as the only actual 2B prospect, but the SS’s in no particular order are Wilmer Flores, Ruben Tejada, and Reese Havens (one of these three would be manning second).
3B: David Wright
OF: The Mets will make the odd decision of re-signing Carlos Beltran to another ridiculous contract, fortunately he will make less than $17mil per year. Fernando Martinez takes one corner. Jeff Francoeur gets signed for 3 years at the stupid lopsidedness of $5, $10, $15. If not then one of the aforementioned SS’s moves to OF.
Bench: Angel Pagan is 4th OF, Nick Evans is a 1B/OF, Daniel Murphy is worthless as a fielder and finds work as DH somewhere else, another one of those SS’s gets a backup infielder job, Jefry Marte is a defensive infielder, Omir Santos is a useless crapbag so pick from Francisco Pena or Rene Rivera, neither of whom may amount to much at all.
SP: Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey, Jon Niese gets to pitch a full season in the majors!, Oliver Perez is useless and John Maine will get dumped after missing most of any other season he gets signed for, most minds have Jenrry Mejia and Brad “I wish his name was Steve” Holt as the next best arms in the system.

Now pitching for your New York Mets.

RP: K-Rod finishes his stupid contract, Fernando Nieve plays long-man, Brian Stokes and Sean Green stick around until management realizes they aren’t all that great (which means they stay forever), Eddie Kunz and Bobby Parnell fight out for being the other crappy reliever, Pedro Feliciano and/or Pat Misch get to stay around for being lefties (Misch can also play the long game).
Coach: Jerry Manuel is no longer the coach following 2010. New guy will be…flashback to 2000! Bobby V!

The mustache is key.

GM: Omar Minaya has a weirdly impossible stranglehold on the position that he can’t lose unless the Mets go 0-162.

Ok, so we know that the Mets tend to trade away 90% of their prospects. Therefore this team will never exist. Also there will be a few free agency periods for the Mets to massively overpay players. I can assure everyone that that will happen (Matt Holliday is drooling). Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a list of Free Agents leading up to the 2012 season, but many places have lists for 2010 (which is now) and 2011. This team assumes that the Mets will overspend in the next two seasons so that they can’t sign anyone major for 2012.

C: Mauer and Victor Martinez are free agents after next season. Theoretically the Mets could jump the gun and trade their farm system to the Twins right now and use Thole as the backup (unless he is part of the trade). If not they obtain Ramon Hernandez at some point to split time with Thole (and teach him).
1B: Derek Lee and Carlos Pena are also free agents after this season (I’m guessing Pujols will be extended). Going by past signings, Derek Lee is the older, more injury-prone player and therefore the Mets’ next 1B!
2B: There are some rumors about Luis Castillo moving in a three team trade that nets Lyle Overbay. I doubt that will happen, but I do think Castillo might be gone at some point soon (even though he was one of the few healthy starters) and Orlando Hudson will be ours!
SS: Jose Reyes gets re-signed. Or he gets moved with one or more (probably more) prospects for Carl Crawford. If Reyes leaves I think this is one of the few times the Mets develop a prospect far enough that he becomes something useful.
3B: DAVID WRIGHT LEARNS TO READ!
OF: Beltran, Holliday, and Crawford (possibly) are all massively overpaid. Holliday has his last useful (fielding) season in 2012. If not Crawford then Francoeur and Pagan split time.
Bench: Angel Pagan, Nick Evans, Julio Lugo, Jorge Cantu, Josh Thole.
SP: Santana, Pelfrey. Linked with Lackey and Wolf so far this off-season, but those are mistakes waiting to happen…meaning the Mets sign at least one of them. Erik Bedard might be a nice surprise (until he gets injured). Brandon Webb is a free agent after next season, but the Yankees might as well call dibs now. Jon Niese and Jon Garland (surprise crappy pitcher move, akin to Tim Redding experiment) may also have some time in the rotation.
RP: K-Rod, Stokes, Green. Kiko Calero, Scott Shields, and an assortment of in-house options fill out the bullpen.
Coach and GM: Does it even matter? This is destiny! Hooray being slightly less than the best!

Possibility...or the future?

I am in no way able to criticize art. My 3-year old son’s art skills surpassed my abilities quite some time ago.

I can, however, provide you with my opinion on what I find visually appealing, and this card from the 1989 Upper Deck set makes the cut!!

While I have no intention of bashing the artist or artists behind the Donruss Diamond Kings work, I personally find the work issued by Upper Deck to be more superior. Coming from a vintage guy that grew up hoarding Diamond Kings, that says a lot!!!

After midnight tonight, free agents are free to negotiate with any team they wish to. I expect the Mets to be very active in the free agent market, while I expect the Yankees to be more interested in resigning their own free agents. Some of the biggest names on this year’s free agent market include Matt Holliday, Jason Bay, and John Lackey.

Most people within baseball expect this year’s market to develop slowly, even more slowly than the market last year did. The obvious reason the market is expected to start slowly is of course due to the poor economy. It is expected that most teams, even the big market teams, will look to the trade market first to improve their clubs. I think this holds true for both the Yankees and Mets as well. The Yankees and Mets will both look into trading for a pitcher like Roy Halladay, before looking at signing starting pitchers like John Lackey. The Mets might also try to trade for a middle of the order bat like Adrian Gonzalez before looking to sign Matt Holliday or Jason Bay. Let the hot stove season begin!

I was recently talking to a fellow baseball fan, blogger, and tweeter about the National League East. Needless to say… this individual and myself had quite contrasting views. The comment that spurred the conversation was “If healthy the Mets could take back the National League East Crown.“ At this point I probably have your attention and you are saying to yourself “What!? How is that even possible!? They finished in 4th place in the division in ‘09!!” My thoughts exactly. For your convenience, I have provided the link to this discussion causing piece of media.

Now here’s my scoop. While this person goes on to say that the loss of Beltran, Reyes, and Putz due to injury was the cause for the Mets collapse, while they were contributing factors, I hardly think they were the only reason. As I mentioned in my previous post, the Mets are more then just a pitcher away from contending. They need to address 2B, 1B, C, LF, and RF. That’s an awful lot of missing pieces. Oh wait. What about their pitching? No matter how brilliant Johan Santana is, he only pitches once every 5 days. Here is my message to Mets’ GM Omar Minaya… Accept the fact that you are rebuilding and role with that idea! He’s my message to the Mets’ owners, the Wilpon family… Fire Omar Minaya because he can’t accept the fact they need to rebuild. Now, I’m sure I just caused quite the ruckus. Let’s get serious here folks. The Mets simply can’t contend NOW with the Phillies, Marlins, or Braves. They aren’t deep enough as a club and are too injury prone.

With all that being said, I want to hear what you have to say! Be sure to comment and leave your thoughts!

Gary Sheffield turns 41 years old today.

Wow, this really makes me feel old. And he’s 7 years older than me…

I remember Sheffield when he broke into the big leagues. His 1989 Topps card was a hot commodity and his very famous uncle helped build quite a bit of buzz about this young, talented shortstop. Like many fans and collectors, I took the bait and bought into Sheffield. Yet, with all of the attention and praise he got early on in his career, I don’t think many of us saw being a future member of the 500 home run club in his future.

I think that this is what is great about the game of baseball. I cannot think of another major sport where you can see someone get better and better at parts of the game like they can in baseball. Yes, basketball players can refine their shot to convert more opportunities. But in baseball, the amount of skills that can be improved are never-ending. From hitting for power, to pitch control, to fielding, it is very obvious when a player takes that next step and gets better at their job.

Anyways, back to Sheff. Gary Sheffield will be a Hall of Famer when his career is over. Being a World Series champion and a member of the 500 HR Club are just 2 of the big reasons that this will happen. And as much as I want it to happen, I hope that he is the second player with ties to the Marlins that gets enshrined at Cooperstown(come on Andre!).

Happy Birthday Sheff!!!

While the regular season has come to an end, GMs, Owners, and front office officials have began the

While the regular season has come to an end, GMs, Owners, and front office officials have began the team evaluation process. While I have been reading many different takes where some notable free agents will wind up, I have to throw my opinion in the mix! It’s just just about free agents though. Many teams will need to reevaluate the entire direction their franchise is taking. A few teams to watch are the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox.

The Mets are one of the most poorly positioned teams in all of baseball. They have a pathetic farm system, almost no infield, and their outfield consists of Carlos Beltran. Not to mention Johan Santana is their only pitcher. Here’s the real problem the Mets face though. If they sign a big name TYPE A free agent they will give up one of their much needed 1st round draft picks. If they don’t go after free agents, they will rush up the little talent in the minors that they have. The Mets need to trade Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran in order to bring in some young talent and replenish their farm system. If you are a Mets fan hold on, it’s going to be a bumpy road!

The Red Sox are in a different boat. They are oozing with young talent, but they need to win now. Their rotation is looking pretty solid with Beckett, Dice-K, Buchholz, and Lester. Their rotation anchored by Papelbon and Bowden is also shaping up quite nicely. Now for the problem. Jacoby Ellsbury and JD Drew are expected to hold down two of their outfield spots, but they still need one more. If they don’t sign either Holliday or resign Bay they will need to fill a large void in their outfield and lineup. Ortiz is aging and is not the same hitter he once was. Youkilis carried the team last year, but can he do it again? Oh, and they don’t have a shortstop. Personally I think they should resign Alex Gonzalez, he is an above average SS on defense and has mediocre batting ability. The Red Sox need to make a splash. I love the idea of acquiring Adrian Gonzalez from San Diego, but the Padres may not want to move him if they want to keep fans in the seats. Dare I say it, but the Tigers need to move some of their salaries and a Miguel Cabrera and Josh Beckett reunion may make the Red Sox a potent team.

Buy and Sell Free Agents

Buy:

Mike Cameron- Not a bad option for defense for a National League team

Jim Thome- Can still DH and would love to play every day

Kelvim Escobar- A cheap SP with a lot of upside

Hank Blalock- A one-year contract in the National League could look attractive

Sell:

Troy Glaus- Can he even play any more?

Nick Johnson- To often injured

Brian Giles- Needs to retire, had a nice career

Mike Hampton- I don’t know why teams keep wasting their money on him

According to Adam Rubin of The NY Daily News, the Mets are interested in signing free agent righty

According to Adam Rubin of The NY Daily News, the Mets are interested in signing free agent righty Joel Piniero. Piniero was 15-12 with an ERA of 3.49 in 214 innings pitched in 2009.

The Mets need to improve the starting rotation, so I am sure we are going to hear them connected to many free agent starting pitchers this offseason. I like Pineiro but not at high price tag. Pineiro’s best aspect is his control. He only walked 27 batters in 214 innings in 2009. That is very impressive. I bet Pineiro would fit nicley in the Mets rotation. Although he is not the number two starter they need to add, he can give the Mets quailty starts and give them a chance to win. The biggest concern I’ve heard about Pineiro is that without the Cardinals pitching coach, Dave Duncan, he will not be able to put up number anywhere near where they were in 2009. I wouldn’t expect him to repeat his great 2009 season anyway. It remains to be seen whether this interest will carry over to the free agent period which begins on November 20th.

Tom Seaver turns 65 years old today.

‘Tom Terrific’ really put up some amazing numbers over the course of his career. He was so good and so consistently at the top of his game that he took quite a bit of the spotlight from the game’s other great pitchers from that era.

Deserving every accolade thrown his way, Seaver was a 3-time Cy Young award winner, a Rookie of the Year winner, a 12-time All-star, and a 1st ballot Hall of Famer. His impressive resume includes 311 career wins, a 2.86 ERA, 3,640 strikeouts, and a 6.8 strikeout per 9 innings pitched ratio.

For Mr. Seaver’s birthday, I would like to give him a full career in a very small market area. This is not a punishment; not at all. I think that ‘Tom Terrific’ is the kind of dynamic player that can revitalize a city and a team’s fan base. A city like Pittsburgh or Kansas City could have used Seaver’s power and rode on his back to glory!!

Happy Birthday Mr. Seaver!!!

From CBS News:

NEW YORK (CBS/AP) It seems like a Mets fan with a strange sense of humor or history has helped the hard hit investors who collectively lost billions in Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme.

In an auction of Madoff and his wife’s personal assets, Madoff’s blue satin New York Mets baseball jacket with his surname stitched on the back was valued at only $720 but sold for $14,500.

Overall, the day’s take was twice as much as New York auctioneers had hoped for.

Two pairs of Ruth Madoff’s diamond dangle earrings sold for $70,000 each, far beyond their pre-sale estimates of $10,000 and $21,000.

But the most highly prized auction item, Madoff’s Rolex watch, sold for $65,000 — $15,000 less than expected.

Madoff received a 150-year sentence for stealing billions of dollars from thousands of investors.

The one million dollars raised at the auction will be divided among his victims.
