Three new programs launch at media center

UCF’s Center for Emerging Media in Downtown Orlando celebrated the addition of three new programs, increasing student options and solidifying key concepts: partnership, collaboration and replication.

About 12,500 square feet of remodeled space is now dedicated to UCF’s MFA in Studio Art & the Computer; Flying Horse Editions, UCF’s non-profit fine arts press; and Citylab-Orlando, a University of Florida graduate-level architecture program.

These programs join several other high-profile programs at the center: The Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy, UCF’s graduate video-gaming school; Vicon Entertainment’s House of Moves, one of the largest motion-capture studios on the East Coast; and the soundstage and editing suites of Studio 500.

“The Center for Emerging Media’s mission is to expand programs, access and opportunities for upper-level undergraduate and graduate emerging media students in Orlando, while furthering the city’s vision for a creative village that will connect professionals with students to help them land high-paying jobs upon graduation," said Chad Binette of UCF News & Information.

Rogier van Etten, a software engineer at 360Ed and 2007 graduate of FIEA, said they are instrumental in securing employer interviews for students. 360Ed focuses on games with high educational content. 

"The best thing you get from FIEA is teamwork: how to be an effective collaborator; how to be an effective communicator; how to be a valuable member of a team," said van Etten. "The skills you can get other places — it’s the team aspect that really stands out."

"We want to replicate what happens in the industry. Collaboration between students, departments and the community is the idea behind the entire building," said FIEA’s communications and admissions director, Todd Deery.

Professors encouraged Brittany Metz, a second-year MFA studio art & the computer graduate student, to get out of her box and focus on different mediums. Metz said she joined the program because the focus is concentrated on your own artwork, and the digital media aspect allowed flexibility and broad-range artistic expression.

"I’m drawn to whimsical, childlike, nostalgic things,” Metz said, “things I can create a story out of or that recall the past. 

Adding to the community learning and work experience environment, Flying Horse Editions brings in visiting artists who provide students with critiques and real-world experience lectures, said director Theo Lotz.

Beginning fall 2010, a creative partnership with Valencia Community College and the University of Florida will allow students to obtain a bachelor of design in architecture degree.

Michael Kuenstle, associate professor at the UF school of architecture, said the symbiotic relationship benefits students, faculty and community.

"Architecture is an urban endeavor. Students will gain a professional degree, immersed in the subject they are studying, while still living in Orlando, and we are able to teach in an urban environment, using the city as a library and teaching tool," Kuenstle said.

According to the UCF Web site, through a 2+2+2 program, students earn an associate’s degree through Valencia, a bachelor’s degree at UCF and a master’s at UF. The program aims at preparing students for careers in professional architecture, construction management and industrial design.

In the meantime, UCF undergraduate students and graduate students will be able to take elective courses at Citylab-Orlando and collaborate with top design, construction and planning faculty members from UF, said Binette.

Currently, Citylab-Orlando is working on a local urban redesign project to address different uses for future public space beneath Interstate 4 in Downtown Orlando.

Can we already crown SM Caen Ligue 2 Champions?

With a third of the Ligue 2 season complete, we are starting to see a clearer picture of what might happen in the upcoming months.

One thing is for sure…SM Caen has made their statement for being considered the champions as they defeated their Normandy rivals Havre AC on Monday by a score of 2-0. Caen continue to impress this year, now leading second place Harve by 10 points. Steeven Langil added another goal to his total in this game, now with seven on the year.

While Caen is moving on up, Nantes have been moving on down. A team that was considered to be a favorite for promotion this season is now lingering at midtable after a 3-0 loss at CS Cedan. After starting off the season in good form, Nantes has been winless in seven of their last eight matches. In addition to their poor Ligue 2 form, Nantes also suffered a shocking loss to Concarneau in the French Cup last week. Some media reports in France are saying that manager Gernot Rohr might be in danger of losing his job due to the poor form of the team.

While Nantes is moving on down, RC Strasbourg are climbing out of the relegation zone. Strasbourg looked like they might have been slipping into the Championnat National at the end of this season with a horrible start. But the club has now won three of their last four matches, including today’s match against Corsican side AS Bastia. Most of Strasbourg’s success can be attributed to striker Nicolas Fauvergue, who is on loan from Lille. Fauvergue has scored eight goals in twelve game since joining Strasbourg, including the only two goals scored by the team against Bastia.

Metz eight game unbeaten streak came to an end of Tuesday as they were dealt a 2-0 loss to Arles-Avignon.

Du rap des Pays-Bas!

The leaves on the trees in Metz are making their last stand today. Being assaulted by many of the flying helicopters from the sycamore trees was strangely satisfying this morning on my way back from uni. It’s a beautiful sight and one which heralds the arrival of what I hope will be a snowy and crisp winter. I don’t hold out much hope on the former, simply because Metz is low lying and apparently does not get as much snow as I had hoped.

I am not usually so impressed by the deathly trip of chestnut coloured leaves, but something about the suddenness of it struck me here. On Friday we had a bright sunny day of 18 degrees and I was wearing a t-shirt. Three days later and I am wrapped up in gloves and scarf shielding myself from the autumnal breeze that has that strange ability to permeate whatever clothing you may be wearing. The falling rain does not dampen my spirits either – I find that there is something exciting about getting wet (no pun intended) as it is a change, a step away from the ordinary and something that you do not necessarily have control over. Yet I will freely admit that staring out my window at pelting rain does have more appeal than splashing through it on the way to work. Below I have added some photos of the view from outside my bedroom window and how it has been changing as the seasons progress

Another indication of the imminent arrival of the coldest season is the opening of the Christmas Markets here in Metz. I have not yet taken the opportunity to go and sample the delights of Christmassy foods. The reason for this is simple – it has been too warm to be considered anywhere near Christmas time. After today, though, I think I will be making my first trip for some ‘vin chaud’ in the very near future.

I do, for some strange reason, enjoy every change of season. I figure it’s because I don’t enjoy things being static. I like change and variety. I guess that is why I change where I live so much and why I travel at any opportunity. I like the uncertainty of weather, it can change a mundane day into one of great excitement just by being a little different. There are some people that find fascination in details. I may be fascinated by the flight of the leaves and the change of its form, but others are fascinated by the size and shape of the leave as it lies on the ground.

The point I am trying to make is that I am really looking forward to the winter, just as I will be looking forward to the spring come February. Life throws many things at you, and the more you look forward to the challenges the more you can handle the next one that you face.

A morning of experimenting with my new (used) Minolta IV light meter. It has the spherical diffuser, but not the reflected-light attachment. I had a look on ebay to see if someone was selling one, but no luck. A 5 or 10 degree viewfinder would be quite nice as well. So with the manual in my hand and without the reflected-light attachment I took some readings and photographed the back of the settee and the house across the street. I think that, overall, it worked reasonably well. The camera indicated that the highlights in the first house photos were blown out so I stopped down by 1 stop, which solved that problem.

Things were getting really complicated when I decided to bring a Metz 45 CT1 into play. The flash was attached to the camera – what do I do now with the light meter? How do I take a meter reading of the flash without the meter being attached to flash or camera? I pressed all the buttons at approx. the same time. I can’t remember what the reading was, but bouncing the flash off the ceiling produced the best result. The flash struggled to keep up with my shooting speed – I may have to replace the batteries.

Then I went for coffee in town with friend J. and later met up with friend S. for more coffee. I had brought my camera and as S. and I wandered around town it was getting dark – what a good opportunity do some bright lights shooting and get some inspiration for the location part of the Approaches to Commercial Photography module! The leason learned? Don’t try this without a tripod, although putting the camera on top of a bin also works.

Metz en automne, il y a des cubes multicolores qui surveillent les enfants en attendant les touristes culturels du Centre Pompidou.

Metz en automne, il y a des soucoupes volantes qui cherchent un bar où passer la nuit … enfin je crois que c’est ça.

Cela fait un certain temps que j’erre sur la toile à lire, à regarder et à écouter. Il y a des pépites de créativité et beaucoup de reprises. Il y a des écrits qui impressionnent par leur verve et leur longueur. Il en est d’autres qui frappent par leur sobriété, leur ellipse digne d’un haiku. Et il y beaucoup de reprises, de citations.

Alors, je me dis autant prendre la parole ou la main.

Et puis j’ai déjà la nostalgie d’Erasme de Metz et de son blog Metz Utopie. Alors plutôt que de me lamenter, j’ai fais le choix d’être un charognard.

Je me nourris de ses restes. J’espère qu’il me pardonnera. On dira que c’est écologiquement responsable. On recycle.

Comme mon projet n’est pas aussi clair que le sien, je vais sans doute tâtonner un certain temps.

Parcoureur de blogs, je ramasse des petits cailloux précieux sans trop savoir qu’en faire.

Pierre Catalan est l’un de mes lieux favoris même s’il semble avoir changé de blog sans laisser d’adresse. Son accroche me titille le neurone:

“comment gouverner les démocraties, s’il faut être populaire pour être élu; et impopulaire pour réformer?”

Et puis il y a cette phrase de Bertrand Russel trouvée sur Metz Utopie d’Erasme de Metz:

«L’ennui dans ce monde, c’est que les idiots sont sûr d’eux et les gens sensés pleins de doutes.»

Le Yin et le Yang, toutes ces choses étranges qui font que la vie n’est pas un film avec des bons et des méchants.

Et puis, Claude Lévi-Strauss est mort.

Reste à savoir s’il fallait rendre hommage à un grand humaniste ou au tenant d’un anti-humanisme: « le but des sciences humaines n’est pas de constituer l’homme, mais de le dissoudre » écrivait-il.

Finalement Michel Eltchanoff a raison dans son article sur Philomag. Enfin vu de ma fenêtre, il a raison parce que je suis d’accord avec lui, surtout quand il écrit:

“Lévi-Strauss, (…) s’oppose à cet humanisme naïf et ethnocentrique, plaide pour un humanisme renouvelé par l’ethnologie. Au lieu de l’humanisme aristocratique de la Renaissance et de l’humanisme bourgeois et colonialiste du XIXe siècle, il promeut un humanisme qui affirme que « rien d’humain ne saurait être étranger à l’homme ». Mais il le fait à partir de l’expérience de la vie en commun avec les sociétés les plus méprisées par l’Occident.”

Il faut toujours gratter la peinture des mots. Surtout ceux en isme.

Cela me renforce dans l’idée que l’équilibrisme est un humanisme. Il me faut donc trouver un vélo pour entrainer mon sens de l’équilibre.

Pour le fil entre deux piliers à 50 m de haut, on verra plus tard. A chacun les limites de son humanisme.

Double ambition pour le Conseil général de la Moselle : le développement du territoire  à l’international vers l’Inde et la continuité de sa ré-industrialisation. Un paradoxe qui n’est qu’apparent. Le département de la Moselle, terre à vocation industrielle et internationale (la SMART électrique sera produite à partir de 2012 à Hambach – signature annoncée d’un contrat de 300 millions d’euros entre RFF et le sidérurgiste anglo-néerlandais Corus rail  implanté à Hayange pour la construction de rail TGV) anticipe la sortie de crise et  s’impose d’ores et déjà à l’international comme le territoire de référence des relations Inde-Europe. Près de 1000 entreprises des secteurs de l’aérospatial, de l’automobile, du ferroviaire, des camions et bus, du nautisme, de la logistique, ont répondu présent à cette 1ère édition de EITS à l’initiative du Conseil général dont le président est M. Philippe Leroy et sénateur du département – 3 éditions ultérieures sont prévues.

Botrányosan ért véget a Hypo-Metz női kézilabda Bajnokok Ligája találkozó – számol be a kezi.hu

A hazaiak ismert menedzsere Gunnar Prokop ismét hozta a formáját. A találkozóból már csak másodpercek voltak hátra, amikor a Hypo labdát vesztett, és a Metz vezetett volna támadást, ám Gunnar Prokop, az osztrákok menedzsere a pályára futva tartotta fel az ellenfél játékosát. A bíró kiállította a magáról megfeledkező trénert.

Prokop hozzáállása az esethez jól látható csöppet sem bűnbánó, cinikus mosolyából, de csatlakoztak hozzá a vele egyetértő Hypo-vezetők és szurkolók is. Az üggyel biztosan foglalkozik majd az EHF, hiszen hasonló esetre nemigen volt még példa a kézilabdázás történetében.

Az eset akár a Metz továbbjutását is befolyásolhatja, így az EHF akár precedensértékű ítéletet is hozhat.
