I know there are many people out there who are English-speaking that try to play as many online fantasy football games as possible. Heck, I even play fantasy basketball from time to time, having no idea what I am doing. And with many websites, like Yahoo, offering French fantasy football, some fans need guidance on how the pick their starting line up for their team.

I have been involved with fantasy sports since 1988, when I played in a fantasy hockey league on an internet program called Q-Link, which was available for the Commodore 64. I have won my fair share of championships throughout the years. And, hopefully, this site can help you with your starting lineup if you are in a French football fantasy league, but have no idea who to start.

We will be doing this every week, and hopefully you will enjoy it!

So, on to Matchday 15. Who to play and who not to play is the question. And to start off, I will give you my starters for the week.

But just a note before we start…make sure you do not start any Monaco or Montpellier players as that game has been postponed due to swine flu.

Players to start
This week has some pretty interesting match ups. And, many of those match ups might lead to a lack of goals. It seems like a highly offensive teams are playing highly defensive teams. And, of course, one will have to give. And in fantasy it is all about the match ups as much as it is about the players themselves.

Two players that are must starts for fantasy this week are Toulouse’s Andre-Pierre Gignac and Moussa Sissoko. Toulouse will be playing a struggling Boulogne one side that has allowed the second most amount of goals this season. Sissoko has been a consistent scoring threat for Le Tef, and Gignac seems to have his scoring touch back. Still, the weak matchup should help these player’s points, especially in leagues where shots count.

Both Gameiro and Vahirua of Lorient are must starts

Another must starts for this week is Loic Remy, who is playing against Sochaux and both Lorient strikers Kevin Gameiro and Marama Vahirua as they take on Grenoble. Also look at Marseille to get a few goals against Lens. Therefore Mamadou Niang is a must start, as he always is. And to finish out the forwards, Marouane Chamakh is a must start against Nancy, especially with the absence of Yoann Gourcuff.

As far as midfield, Lorient’s Olivier Monterrubio continues to be a good start. He can not only score goals, but he can put up assists as well. Sochaux’s Marvin Martin might also be a player that can contribute a goal against Nice.

Defensively, Lyon players are always considered good starters. You cannot go wrong with Aly Cissokho, Jean-Alain Bounsong or Cris. These are must starts in any league. As far as goaltenders, Lorient’s Fabien Audard and Toulouse’s Yoann Pele (who should be back from suspension, but still keep an eye if he starts) are strong bets.

The “Sleeper of the Week” might be Lille’s Robert Vittek. While Vittek only has one goal this year, everyone knows that he will eventually turn his game around. And going against Valencienne is the perfect place to do it. A Lille vs. Valencienne match could resemble the high scoring game that we saw between Marseille and Lyon a few weeks ago. If that is the case, Vittek is a definite sleeper starter for this week.

Players to Sit
While it is hard to say this, I would caution anyone that is considering playing any Lyon striker or midfielder. Because of Lyon’s injuries and Claude Puel’s constant changing of on-field personnel, it is a risk to start a players like Bafe Gomis or Lisandro Lopez if you don’t know if they will start. If you do have these players, make sure that they are starters by checking the Ligue 1 site right before game time. Otherwise, you might have just wasted a forward position.

Also, Paris Saint-Germain strikers might have a hard time scoring as well, as they take on the defensive-minded league leaders Auxerre. Like Lyon, it is sometimes hard to know who the starting striker is for PSG. Still, expect Mevlut Erding, Peguy Luyindula and Ludovic Giuly to be shut down this weekend.

As far as goaltenders and defense, stay away from anyone on Rennes. While they are a good defensive team, they could possibly be shell-shocked by Lyon. Expect Lyon to pile on the shots and give goalkeeper Nicolas Douchez and American defender Carlos Bocanegra a very hard time.

Gyan plays a strong defense and goaltender in Lyon.

“Bust of the Week”
Lyon is expected to pile on the shots. Even with their offensive firepower, they have a stong defense as well, especially since Jean-Alain Boumsong has been put back into the starting line up. This will make it even harder for Asamoah Gyan to score for Rennes. Gyan is currently third in Ligue 1 scoring, but he might be blanked in this match. He is usually a must start in every format, and he continues to be on Sunday, but his stats might not be what you are use to.

Dave’s “Must Start” Starting Lineup
Here is my suggested starting lineup for Matchday 15. I would go with a 4-3-3 line up and start the following.

Goal: Fabien Audard (LOR)

Defense: Adama Coulibaly (AUX), Cris (LYN), Souleymane Diawarra (L’OM), Aly Cissokho (LYN)

Midfield: Moussa Sissoko (TOU), Lucho (L’OM), Benoit Pedretti (AUX)

Strikers: Andre-Pierre Gignac (TOU), Mamadou Niang (L’OM), Kevin Gameiro (LOR)

Also, make sure you check Ligue 1’s site for injuries!

Le Parisien has reported that PSG’s Trukish striker Mevlut Erding will miss 15 days due to a shoulder injury that he recieved during PGS’s match against Lille two weeks ago. He will undergo arthroscopic surgery tomorrow on the shoulder, and his status will be updated after the clubs re-evaluates the player after the surgery.

With Erding out this week, this should lead the way for Guillaume Hoarau to return to the starting line-up for the first time this year.

Also, Julien Escude is questionable for tomorrow’s game versus Serbia.

« Je suis super content, super fier pour toute ma famille.» Mevlut Erding a trusté les bonnes nouvelles ce week-end. Le maintien officiel de Sochaux l’a évidemment soulagé au plus haut point. Mais la petite pépite qui brillait dans ses yeux samedi soir venait tout droit de Turquie. En rallumant son portable, sur le chemin de l’aéroport, un premier SMS ”ami” l’a en effet invité, comme pour un jeu de piste, à se rendre sur le site de la Fédération turque. « J’y suis allé et j’ai vu que j’étais dans la liste des 26 pour l’Euro! Tout le monde autour de moi croyait depuis longtemps que j’irais mais j’attendais cette annonce avec impatience. Pour moi, ce n’était pas fait.» Le seul sochalien de l’Euro a ensuite tenu à contacter, son grand frère, Ramazan. Branché sur la télé turque, ce dernier lui a alors répercuté en direct les premiers commentaires et… une décla de Fatih Terim.

«En fait, le sélectionneur a attendu la fin du championnat national pour communiquer le groupe…» expliquait encore Mevlut. Au passage, la petite blague de Ramazan n’a pas du tout marché. Ce dernier a tenté de lui faire croire quelques secondes, qu’il n’était pas de l’aventure. Avant de préciser qu’on n’était plus le 1er avril ! Depuis hier, le gros des troupes est déjà rassemblé en stage à Istanbul. Mevlut est quant à lui, toujours à disposition de son club. La Fédération aurait aimé récupérer son…3e choix d’attaque dès cette semaine. Mais Mevlut tient absolument à jouer contre Paris :« On veut finir sur une bonne note. C’est très important pour moi, même si bien sûr la participation à l’Euro est devenue une priorité.» Fatih Terim doit encore ramener sa liste à 23 noms pendant le stage prévu en Allemagne. Mais on l’a bien compris. Cet ultime écrémage ne concernera pas Mevlut.

Turkey coach Fatih Terim has called up 3 uncapped players for his squad to play Belarus next week. MKE Ankaragücü midfielder Gökhan Emreciksin and FC Sochaux-Montbéliard striker Mevlüt Erding have received their first call-ups, while Bursaspor’s uncapped Mustafa Sarp is hoping for a first senior cap after being selected in the squad for the second time. This may be due to the clash between rivals Besiktas and Fenerbahce next weekend but it provides a chance for the newcomers to state a claim ahead of Euro 2008.

Mevlut Erding, jeune attaquant à la double nationalité, est l’une des rares satisfactions sochaliennes.

Un voyage aura peut-être suffi à réveiller ses racines. En février 2005, lors d’un déplacement avec l’équipe de France des moins de 18 ans, Mevlut Erding, né à Saint-Claude (Jura) et formé au FC Sochaux, renforce l’attention de son pays d’origine, celui de ses parents, immigrés en France. Lors de la Meridian Cup, en Turquie, où il est retenu à la place de Boukari (blessé), ses quelques maladresses n’empêchent pas les entraîneurs locaux, qui partagent d’ailleurs le même hôtel que les petits Bleus, de rapidement le solliciter.

Depuis, le jeune attaquant n’a plus porté le maillot au coq, naturellement attiré par celui au croissant de lune. « Mes parents étant turcs, c’était logique que je fasse ce choix, se rappelle-t-il. Même si j’avais marqué trois buts en cinq matches avec la France, je n’ai aucun regret puisque j’ai été ensuite appelé avec les moins de 19 ans turcs et les Espoirs. »

De la génération bénie des joueurs nés en 1987 (Benzema, Nasri, Ménez, Ben Arfa…), il a aussi vite compris quelle sélection A il aurait davantage de chance d’intégrer.

À bientôt vingt et un ans, il ne le cache pas : « C’est un objectif, mais après le maintien de Sochaux. » Auteur de cinq réalisations cette saison, dont quatre lors des cinq derniers matches, Erding a fini par s’imposer comme le principal atout offensif d’une équipe en difficulté (19 de L 1). Cela n’aura pas été sans accroc. Malgré un premier but à Ajaccio (1-0), pour son premier match en L 1, le 19 novembre 2005, Alain Perrin ne lui fit jamais confiance la saison passée (4 rencontres, jamais titulaire).

Un mal pour un bien : il en a profité pour se distinguer en CFA (16 buts en 20 matches). « Je pense avoir bien travaillé et ça paie aujourd’hui, positive l’attaquant, qui aurait pu être prêté durant l’été. Je tiens d’ailleurs à remercier l’entraîneur Frédéric Hantz, qui m’a fait confiance, ainsi que Jean-Luc Ruty, le directeur du centre de formation, et Bernard Genghini, l’entraîneur de la réserve, qui ont voulu que je reste. »

Ce dernier ne peut que s’en féliciter. « Il a su saisir sa chance, c’est l’attaquant qui se dégage au club, juge l’ancien international. Il a progressé techniquement et devant le but. Il est explosif, costaud (1,79 m ; 69 kg), solide sur ses jambes. C’est un garçon généreux, qui se démarque bien et aime prendre la profondeur. Il déménage ! » À l’image de ses modèles, Ronaldo, son idole d’enfance, et Didier Drogba. Exemples à suivre.
