Seniors who eat fruits and vegetables and who have good cognitive function are much less likely to die from heart disease than those who have poorer cognitive function and eat fewer fruits and vegetables, according to a new study.

Researchers at the Drexel University School of Public Health in Philadelphia analyzed diet and cognitive data on 4,879 people age 70 and older who took part in the U.S. Longitudinal Study on Aging. Participants were followed for an average of seven years.

According to a HealthDay report, the analysis found that:

Those who ate three or more servings of vegetables daily had a 30 percent lower risk for dying from heart disease and a 15 percent lower risk for dying from any cause during the follow-up period than those who ate fewer servings of vegetables.

There was a significant association between higher consumption of fruits and vegetables and decreased prevalence of cognitive impairment.

People who scored high on cognitive function tests were less likely to die from heart disease or any other cause during the follow-up than were those with low scores.

A part of me died today while re-living my high school days of cruising Gratiot Ave. back in Michiga

A part of me died today while re-living my high school days of cruising Gratiot Ave. back in Michigan, and my stomach probably cheered in celebration. The Hot n’ Now burger joint, home of the 39 cent cheeseburger and where I spent some of my hard earned cash from my $4.75/hr. high school job, closed in favor of a Checkers.

First off, for anyone that doesn’t understand Gratiot cruising, it was one of the ridiculous things to do while in high school. To this day I don’t understand the fascination, but I am guilty to have partook in Gratiot strip roving. But if there was one crazy discovery to come of these silly travels, it was Hot n’ Now.

I will never think of what these burgers were actually made of, given its insanely low price tag. One thing I will think of is that to me, this is where the burger word ’slider’ originated from. It was so far from being a mini hamburger, because it was just about the size of a McDonald’s hamburger. I will think of this as more of an In n’ Out burger, only the name being very literal (gross). I remember how much grease layered the cheese that then dripped onto burger wrapping.

Goodbye my Gratiot classic, my tears are running down like the grease from your burgers as we speak.

Seniors who neglect themselves, risking their own health and safety, tend to be individuals with lim

Seniors who neglect themselves, risking their own health and safety, tend to be individuals with limited social networks and little social engagement, according to a study by Rush University Medical Center.

“We need to better understand elder self-neglect – who is at risk and why – so that we can find solutions and establish appropriate policies,” said Dr. Xinqi Dong, the study’s lead author. “This is particularly important because reports of self-neglect to social service agencies are rising.

“Moreover, as our aging population is rapidly increasing in size, elder self-neglect will likely become an even more pervasive public health issue.”

The study was based on records drawn from the Chicago Health and Aging Project, a study of 9,056 individuals 65 years of age and older who live in Chicago’s South Side. Over the 12-year course of the study, 20 percent of these seniors were reported to the Chicago Department of Aging because of concern about suspected self-neglect.

Elder self-neglect generally manifests itself as “a refusal or failure by the person to provide himself/herself with adequate food, water, clothing, shelter, personal hygiene, medication and safety precautions.”

Twice as many women as men and more than seven times the number of African Americans as whites were reported for self-neglect. Those reported, compared with those not reported, tended to be over the age of 80 and have a lower socioeconomic status. The individuals also tended to have nutritional deficiencies, medical conditions and cognitive, physical and psychological deficits.

However, independent of all these factors, lower levels of social well-being – specifically, limited social networks and little social engagement – were major risk factors for self-neglect.

The study has important implications for health and social service professionals, Dong said.

“Professionals who work with the elderly need to be mindful not just of their patients’ health profile, but also of their social well-being, a factor that may put them at risk of self-neglect,” Dong said. “With social services being cut, and community and city resources lacking to help seniors, the problems of isolation can only grow worse.”

Lack of social engagement and staying networked with others in this world can bring on some of the worst feelings a person can have. Home Instead Senior Care has only the friendliest, talkative, and socially engaging CAREGivers for our clients.

Missing Person & Awaited Justice

Whenever her name comes in my mind, whenever I thought of Missing Persons, tears streamed down my eyes. Amina Masood Janjua — wife of one missing person Masood Ahmed Janjua and Chairperson Defence of Human Rights Pakistan — is struggling for the missing persons in Pakistan. She has endlessly and doggedly strived hard for the Missing Persons of Pakistan who were nabbed by Pakistani Intelligence Agencies in collaboration of United States of America — our best ally.

The case of Missing Person was petitioned in Supreme Court of Pakistan in veteran president General Musharraf’s era and justice was highly foreseen, but during that time Musharraf took the phenomenally outstanding performance of SC as his insult — as the decisions of SC were going against the idiotic moves of Musharraf’s government — so he imposed emergency in Pakistan and purged the Chief Justice of Pakistan and put him under house arrest. The hope of getting justice was vanished.

Now since the time Judiciary has been restored back and Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry is reinstated, the case on Missing Person wasn’t heard in SC for long, or rather SC didn’t take any serious notice, until last month a protest outside the Supreme Court led by Amina Masood Janjua against inaction on the issue of Missing Persons drew the ire of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry who then ordered the interior secretary to submit a report about the missing persons.

Amina Masood Janjua’s entrance in the red zone, and camping in front of the Supreme Court, made Chief Justice of Pakistan take the notice of the protest; hence, the longstanding case of Missing Persons was reopened again.

Interior Ministry says that it’s doing hectic efforts to trace the Missing Persons and 241 people had been traced while 175 are still untraced. Where are the untraced ones isn’t an inconspicuous and covert thing. Veteran president General Pervez Musharraf sold them to CIA. In the words of one of my American friend Prudence: YES! I have heard of the innocent Pakistani people nabbed by the CIA. It is my understanding that your President Musharraf took advantage of the widespread paranoia after 9/11 and got rid of most of his political “enemies” by literally selling them for around $20,000 each to the CIA for rendition purposes.

People from the US — the state government that’s committing heinous crimes — are ready to accept the fundamental reality and truth, but ineptly many of the Pakistani people — the victim nation of such atrocities — are even now not having sufficient strength to realize and acknowledge some of the evilness of the so-called best leaders.

On 23rd November 2009, all the cases of the “Missing Loved Ones” were fixed for hearing in CJP’s Court room number 1. As yet, there’s no news on media about any adjournment or any adjudication or the deferment of date.

It’s yet sad that none of the prominent political party beefed up the cause of Amina Masood Janjua — which is after all a cause of our country Pakistan. The self-righteous and double-tongued political leaders and their respective parties are always up for power, but not for powerless people to emancipate them.

The edgy yet high-mettled activist Amina Masood Janjua’s efforts will never run out InshaAllah. May Allah help her and all of us in this cause. Ameen.

It’s again a high time for us to at least understand and decry the bad side of our shameful leaders and advocate the cause of Amina — a cause to help her get the justice to the Missing Persons and their families — and a cause to render Pakistan the services it has always sought for. I ask judiciary an additional time, are you listening?

Well I have done a little investigating about, Mr. Abdel-Hak and the federal court case that he was

Well I have done a little investigating about, Mr. Abdel-Hak and the federal court case that he was mentioned in. Here is how it goes, apparently something was sent to residents in the city on the mayor’s divorce. The mayor assumed that Hassan Jamal (who is suing the city) was involved in sending these out. The restraining order filed in federal court asked to have Mr. Jamal stop his (agents) from doing this. This motion accused Mr. Abdel-Hak as being the agent for Mr. Jamal, the motion goes on to talk about the famous meeting at Panera, and you can read what happened at that meeting, according to what Mr. Abdel-Hak say’s in his comment. To give Mr. Abdel-Hak credit he has yet to blast the Mayor in a city council meeting, I do not think I would be so generous.

One of the many things the Mayor is accusing Mr. Abdel-Hak of, is having city council in his pocket, according to the Mayor, Mr. Abdel-Hak has bought, and paid for our city council. I will say this the city council should demand a copy of the motion filed in federal court, it is in- excusable that city council is defamed in such a way. That is just one of many things the mayor accused Abdel-Hak of doing. The mayor is also accusing Abdel-Hak of extortion, I think he calls it an “extortion plot”. So how is it Mr. Mayor with the city lawyer sitting right next to you, why did he not file charges against Mr. Abdel-Hak?, and why would you have sat for more than 1 hour if someone was trying to extort the city?

You may ask yourself why did the mayor assume that Abdel-Hak was an agent for Hassan Jamal?,Well this was the only way to get to Abdel-Hak, and not pay for it out of his pocket. The motion has since been denied, what I could not put together until I watched the last city council meeting, was that Abdel-Hak had filed a FIOA for information on Rachel Thomas, I think the mayor was hoping to shut Abdel-Hak, and his legitimate questions down.

I do not know how much this is costing us tax payers, but the law firm that filed the motion on his behalf has to have their bill approved by the city council. Yes this is the same Law firm Ron Acho, Cummings, McClorey, Davis & Acho, that wrote, a comment here, I will be watching for the first bill to come in. I would love to see what this stupid motion cost us, and I would ask the city council to have the mayor explain under what basis he decided on behalf of the city to file such a motion, and why he feels it is within his power to smear, and try to intimidate a citizen of this city?

Rainman “It was back in the early 1980

                                                   Rainman

“It was back in the early 1980’s” when the phone rang and the kids mother answered the phone!

the kids mother told him that it was his best friend “Mike Oprisiu” on the phone, little did the kid know that, this was a phone call that would change his life forever.Mike Oprisiu when the kids best friend that lived down the street.Mike Oprisiu then invited this boy over to play and well, this kid was so excited he stop everything he was doing and went on his way to Mike Oprisiu house.when he got there mike went downstairs and called this little boy to come down to the basement,Mike said he would like to show him something. When this little boy got downstairs Mike was not alone,Brian Williaams another neighbor was there and they had taken off his clothes and beat him where there would be evidence of a beating, then they repeatly”beat and raped” this boy numerous times,Mike Oprisiu’s mother Bonnie Oprisiu and Mark Oprisiu was at the hosipital seeing their Father Eugene Oprisiu, he was sick during these days.

Brain Williams had left and Mike Oprisiu had continued with raping this kid until Brian Oprisiu,”Mike’s younger brother”had heard crying in the basement,Brian grabbed a stick and started beating Mike with a stick and Brian started crying and when he was yelling at Mike,Brian called him a monster and started saying why, why? You are a monster.this is your best friend, you raped me,you raped Okyo Taliski,This little boys sister, why Mike? Then he would hit him again,Mike just laughed and then this boy finally got his clothes and left toward home.he made it about two houses down the street and went between this house to cry, then a lady came out of the house and said to her husband, I just found this little boy crying, the boy could not even speak. She asked him what was wrong and the boy could not say a word. Then the boy got home and the first thing his mother had said was,you had been crying? The boy said No mom,I’m ok .When Bonnie Oprisiu (Mikes Mother) and Mark Oprisiu (Mikes older Brother) got home,Brain Oprisiu (Mikes younger Brother) must have told them what happened. This is how they handled this brutal crime,Bonnie called up this little boy and asked him if he would meet with Mark down the street. The boy said yes,Mark asked this boy not to go to the Westland Police and he would take care of this problem himself.

This is a true story! and if you are a young boy and been through something like this,”go to the Police” because you will need help dealing with something like this, you cant not keep it covered up inside!Bonnie and Mark were wrong in how they handled this problem!

It seems different when your a boy and when you been through something like this!, I feel no matter what “people think” of you,go to the Police!

It’s important that people know the truth about these people!

                                                                                                                                                             The little boy

P.S.

How many other victim’s has there been from Michael Oprisiu?

I can name at least “4″
