An online debate over global warming science has broken out after an unknown hacker broke into the e-mail server at a prominent, British climate-research center, stole more than a thousand e-mails about global warming research and posted them online.

Global warming skeptics are seizing on portions of the messages as evidence that scientists are colluding and warping data to fit the theory of global warming, but researchers say the e-mails are being taken out of context and just show scientists engaged in frank discussion.

The Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia is one of the United Kingdom’s leading climate research centers and has been a strong proponent of the position that global warming is real and has human causes. The center confirmed the hack occurred in an e-mail statement to Threat Level.

Those of us that remember Spitting Image’s series of sketches showing Ronald Reagan’s brain as missing will be interested to hear the news that Mussolini’s brain in missing.

Knowing that Mussolini was an MI5 agent came as quite a shock recently, but apparently stranger news has revealed that his brain has appeared on Ebay for 15,000 Euros.

His remains, apparently contained in three glass vials, had apparently been stolen from a hospital in Milan, where an autopsy was conducted on his body, following his execution, by partisans at the end of the Second World War.

However, due to Ebay rule, which do not allow the sale of body parts on their website, it has been taken down from the website.

Commenting, his granddaughter, Alessandra Mussolini, a right-wing Italian MP said;

“I was advised this morning that pieces of my grandfather’s brain and some of his blood were being sold on eBay for 15,000 euros.

“This is very serious, these are the kinds of things we have to guard against,” said the former show girl.

March 04, 2009 My research on the subject of Bloody Sunday began almost exactly to the day one year

March 04, 2009

My research on the subject of Bloody Sunday began almost exactly to the day one year ago. At the time I had no definite vision of my work’s format, whether it would be a non-fiction account of historical facts or if I should package the events into a novel. The question was, how would I separate myself from the numerous other books available on the subject? Just a quick search on Amazon.com will show you what I mean; there are a myriad of books on the Irish War and adding yet another non-fiction work would be like adding sand to the Sahara. Another circumstance that made my choice for a novel was the sober look at a simple number: The Amazon ranking. Amazon sells millions of different books and a ranking below 100,000 is not too shabby, however, most books on the Irish Troubles rank way beyond that, which accounts for a very few book sales per month throughout the entire United States.

The low ranking has, in my very personal opinion, several reasons. First of all, most books on the Irish War are either incredibly boring (they are usually written for people who already have intimate knowledge of the Irish Troubles) or are so politically tainted that you need to doubt their credibility. The other reason may be plain lack of interest in an event, such as Bloody Sunday, that took place more than 30 years ago. Well, I am almost sure there is some good literature out there, but none of them sticks out far enough to separate themselves from the masses.

Consequently, after a few weeks of intense research, I had made my decision to write a novel and embed some Irish history into the storyline, just enough to not be boring, but tickle the readers’ curiosity. Maybe they will feel inspired to go to their local library, bookstore, or even Online, eager to learn more about a topic that deserves more attention than it currently receives.

Besides writing I also create my own covers and I had decided it would be best to use a photo related to Bloody Sunday. The previous research had provided me with a small number of contacts and as it turns out my first contact was also where I got the photo I liked best. That contact was Mary Andrews, Pictures Syndication Manager of the Guardian and Observer. It was very uplifting to receive a response per e-mail that started with a “Hiya, Wilfried.” She offered me a number of photos, most of them relating to the recent Bloody Sunday inquiry (or to use proper English: enquiry), which would have been an interesting choice, but I felt they were not quite right considering the storyline of my novel. One photo, though, caught my attention from the beginning; it is described as Boys Playing In The Bogside Catholic Neighbourhood Of Derry, A Republican Stronghold In Northern Ireland, Antonio Olmos, 01 July 2002.

The events of Bloody Sunday took place in the Bogside neighborhood. The black & white photo shows, besides the boys playing, a large sign in the background “Free All Political Prisoners”. What I liked about the picture is the contrast between the playing children and the political message placed in a neighborhood where thirteen civil rights protesters, six of whom were just seventeen years old, were killed by members of the 1st Battalion of British Parachute Regiment. I obtained the copyright later that year, which also included a very pleasant phone conversation with Mary as she took my credit card number.

I would also like to thank Adrian Kerr of the Derry Journal for his efforts. The Derry Journal owns some few photos related to Bloody Sunday, but they were taken either before or after the events. You can find a number of photos of the victims on their web site (http://www.derryjournal.com/), but as Adrian told me, victim photos belong to the individual families.

Another possible source of authentic photographs was Eamon Melaugh, a photographer, who owns an extensive collection of photos made during and after Bloody Sunday. He also maintains a very impressive web site on the subject, but I have to say he was a vast disappointment. I wrote several inquiries per e-mail, which he chose not to answer.

Well, after all, I am very satisfied with my current choice.

Supplement 07/20/2009:

Maybe I should have done this much earlier, but, now that we are getting closer to actual publishing, I looked into the terms & conditions allowing me to use the cover photo. The terms did not allow me to modify the photo, which limited the design choices for the nice cover. As a result, the cover looked too bland, and we decided to change it. Another reason is, that the royalties I paid are based on a sales volume of up to 100 copies, and I am sure it will sell better than that. We downloaded a nice picture at BigStockPhoto.com, meaning there are no royalties involved.

Well, as I wrote before, this entire process was supposed to give me a look & feel of publishing a novel, and I can say, I have learned a lot.

March 04, 2009 Back in 2005 I discovered the thrill of writing and publishing my first book on a ver

March 04, 2009

Back in 2005 I discovered the thrill of writing and publishing my first book on a very dry technical topic – Controller Area Network, a technology developed for automobiles. Since then I had published two more books of similar nature, but for the longest time I had toyed with the thought of breaking the cycle and explore other topics to write about, maybe even writing a novel of some kind. I am aware, writing technical literature or writing a novel are two very different ballparks, but am also thrilled by the idea.

Now, that a decision for a novel was made, I had to decide the subject to write about. I do have enough material in my mind that would account for at least four or five novels, but I also wanted to start with an “easy” subject, something to get a feel of the whole novel writing experience without wasting years of research and writing. One recent issue of thePoets & Writers magazine listed cases where authors worked for up to 18 years on their first novel, which, honestly, does not appeal – maybe it’s my German efficiency thinking.

After numerous hour-long sessions in the hot tub I came up with the “easy” subject of Bloody Sunday, which made my wife crinch when I told her. Having a law degree and knowing my rebel attitude she foresaw all the legal implications such as verifying copyrights, accuracy of historical facts, etc. It’s ironic, because being married to an Irish-American green-eyed red-head who is spiritually, however, not actively a staunch supporter of Sinn Fein, confronts you with the very passionate topic of Irish history on a nearly daily basis. To my wife’s credit, I hadn’t told her I was thinking about a novel; her initial expectation was a non-fiction account of the events. As Mark Twain put it so adequately “Familiarize yourself with the facts and then you can distort them any way you please.” and that is exactly what novel-writing is about.

Bloody Sunday, which many people associate only with the famous U2 song, refers to the events in Derry (the nameLondonderry is not acceptable for a good Irish Republican) in Northern Ireland on January 30, 1972, when twenty-six civil rights protesters were shot by the 1st Battalion of the British Parachute Regiment. Thirteen people, six of whom were only seventeen years old, died at the scene. Five of those wounded, were shot in the back. While the study of such a tense subject seemed promising, I also found that good literature on the subject is hard to come by. Most books are either politically tainted to a degree that their credibility must be taken with a considerable grain of salt or the writing style simply defies the basic rules of good and fluent reading. It is my firm belief that writing about history should not only catch, but also keep the reader’s attention; otherwise the writing turns out to be a worthless task.

I was discouraged to have selected several bad examples from a myriad of available books on recent Irish history. One work in particular, written by a former member of 14 Company, at some time considered the most secret undercover operation of British Intelligence, was written in the style of an adolescent with an inferiority complex the size of Wisconsin describing a violent video game. Accompanying photos were plenty and one of them showed an example of how a pistol was properly tucked into the backside of a woman’s jeans with the subtitle “A fine example of a nicely shaped butt”. A head shake is in order now. I am now using the vast Internet resources for my research.

Another inspiration for my story was a CD I had first heard in Ireland, when we visited some relatives (I am now officially “Irish by Marriage”). My wife’s grandmother was born on the island of Inishbofin off the coast of Galway and came to the United States in the early 1920’s. The CD in question is Farewell to Evening Dances by Colm O’Donnell, one of my absolute favorite Irish musicians. One song in particular, The Boys of Barr Na Sraide, caught my attention. The song, according to Irish singer Tim Dennehy’s web site, “captures beautifully the essence of Cahersiveen nestled as it is between the mountain and sea”. Cahersiveen is an Irish town located at the Ring of Kerry. The song is based on a poem by Sigerson Clifford, who was born in Cahersiveen, and it tells the story of the boys of Barr Na Sraide – Top Street – who hunted for the wren.

Through the intensive research on the topic of recent Irish history I discovered many more interesting details, which influenced my writing significantly as I tried to incorporate historical facts into the story line. Bloody Sunday is still an important part of the story, but more in respect that it strengthened the position of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and resulted in the recruitment of a great number of new members determined to fight British rule. I used references toThe Boys of Barr Na Sraide in a very unique way and you need to read the final result to find out how…

Talking about the story line… Here is a summary:
The Irish War is officially a part of history, but not for Finnean Whelan, an IRA veteran of almost 40 years. British Intelligence has produced evidence that he is the mastermind behind a conspiracy to assassinate the First Minister of Northern Ireland. Finn is protected by the CIA in his exile in the United States after working for them for the past twenty years. Consequently, British Intelligence has come up with a plan to lure Finn back into their jurisdiction, Northern Ireland, by revealing the identity of the man who is ultimately responsible for the killing of Finn’s wife, Shauna. Here they hope not only to apprehend him, but also lead them to another conspirator, Martin Sheehan, who hides in the Northern provinces. For Finn this is not only a mission of revenge, but marks the beginning of a journey into the past and the return to the one true love: Ireland.

The title of the book will be “The Bleeding Hills”. It is divided into six chapters and as of today’s date I have finished chapter three; time to forward it to my editing resource. The remaining three chapters already contain a very coarse draft and I need to flesh them out. You will see me somewhere in Western Massachusetts, hanging out at a Panera Bread, copying thoughts from my brain into my beloved MacBook. The current plan is to be ready for publication by end of May. In the meantime I will post further updates here on my blog.

I got all excited when I saw that season 6 of MI:5 (or Spooks as it is known in the UK) was available through Netflix but two discs in and I am in yawnsville. This is season is so dull not even the edible Rupert Penry Jones can hold my interest. It looks as if trying to weave one plot thread through the whole season but I just don’t CARE. There is a Brit actor pretending to be a CIA agent with the worst US accent ever and he is too pale for an American. Something about Iran. Ros joining a covert agency to spy on the covert agency she works for, and Adam is sleeping with everyone (and his son appears to have been erased from history).

The only reason I am plowing through it is that I want to be able to watch season 7 which has Richard Armitage (Guy of Gisborne from Robin Hood) as a recently released spy who spent a few years working on his Russian . Hello Cold War, Regan economics and legwarmers – the 80s are back baby!

This has been a subject I have always wanted to vomit about, but I never seem to have the time or energy to sit down and abuse the keyboard, most likely because the very subject I am talking about usually dominates all the free hours I have when I am bored or just chillaxing at home.

Since the boom of social networking somewhere around 1995 when the concept was exposed to a wider volume of internet users we now are beyond the point of no return where an individual in the “western world” cannot completely feel at ease be it socially or professionally without having some form of ‘user profile’ published somewhere on the internet where it is open to be viewed by anybody in the world.

My own generation now known as the “facebook babies” have all experienced life before social networking sites like Facebook, Bebo, MySpace, Wayne etc, yet now the majority of these “facebook babies” would find it hard to keep their social ‘status’ without the use of such websites and networks, which I think is somewhat concerning in so many ways that I am a little surprised it’s not written or talked about as much as I feel it should be.

So to lay down the facts and to get straight to the point of what I am writing about, lets take a look at what YOU, yes you publish about yourself on the internet at some point or another, maybe not on one particular website or social networking utility (maybe several) and see how much personal information we actually make public to anybody who can read or hear, and what I think is quiet scary at the least, to anybody with any agenda or mental state.

We publish:

Our favourite movies

Our Address

Our favourite books

Our favourite Music

Our home town

Our Phone number

Our email addresses

Our club memberships

Our jobs

Our Education History

Our Dates of birth

Our Sexual Orientation

Our Interests

Our Daily Schedules

Our Relations to friends

Our pictures and photographs

Our Personal Videos

Our Political Affiliations

What we are doing at any time during the day.

Now the only way I can attempt to make you see what I am seeing here, is to ask you to take a second and do the following,

Remember any movie or TV programme that was either based upon a character that was working for a government department, such as the police, the security services such as MI5/6, FBI, CIA, FSB, GIA, NSA etc.

The plot is to track down a criminal, to find out as much information about that person as possible to help solve the problem, now the way to get this information about the bad guy/girl is to look on a DATABASE. Usually a government database such as criminal records, intelligence databases etc, and we always star in amazement when we watch the scene on the television when the good guys type in this person’s name, and BOOM! Like magic, everything about the bad person appears on their database. Their eye colour, height, allergies, professions, financial status, friends, photos, videos, actually everything I have bulleted above!………. Now are you seeing my point?

It was, at one point a fountain of information held on individuals that could only be accessed by people that were doing it for the “right reasons”, to protect and to serve their community, such delicate information that only people in high positions could only access because it was so personal. Only now we don’t need these databases to be so protected and treated as delicate and respected the privacy of the person this information was about, because we volunteer this information to anybody who wants to read it.

All in the name of social networking?

People bang on about Facebook’s privacy policy which states that once we upload any information about ourselves we no longer have the right to revoke that information submitted and we automatically grant facebook the exclusive rights to use that information for any purposes they deem fit, oh including using your photographs without your permission too. But what these people blissfully ignore is that this information cannot be treated with such delicate hands because the users give too much personal information away on purpose, and for the purpose of making it public (that could be public to the entire world, or to other user accounts/people that person has granted permission to view their own profiles).

So that big secret database we all get paranoid about when we think about it, that database that when we think about the information other people have on us makes the hairs on our arm stand on end, isn’t as top secret as we all thought, and why?

Because we knowingly upload all this information about ourselves into the public domain.

Could this be because we are all widely exposed to a celebrity obsessed world that we are now comfortable with sharing our personal lives with the rest of the world like these so called “celebrities” do on reality TV?

Maybe we’re all just getting too comfortable, something for you to think about. (And me too!).

So really, our governments don’t need to have an extensive secret network of databases on every single citizen, because now, they have facebook!

Over & Out

As I type these posts, I often ponder on the technological age that brought us the computers we work

As I type these posts, I often ponder on the technological age that brought us the computers we work on. Nobody can doubt they have revolutionised every walk of life.

But it strikes me that whilst everybody tends to think that the databases, word processors and search engines we all use on our PCs and laptops tend to all have similar characteristics, the evolutionary paths have actually divided.

I am not talking about Microsoft versus Apple, Unix versus Linux or Sql Server versus Oracle. I am referring to the computer systems that the security services and scientific labs use.

I have watched Spooks and James Bond often enough to realise that MI5, MI6 and GCHQ computers are not like ours. You may think you have the latest spec computer with Windows 7 and all the rest of it. But that isn’t the way it works with the secret services or science labs.

For a start, their computers are much noisier than ours. They are bound by conventions to keep the sound on constantly. So whenever data comes up on the screen it is accompanied by a sound like R2D2 doing a turn on the karaoke. There is clearly a reason for this but we are not allowed to know what it is.

There is no doubt that their computers are faster than ours and have huge storage capacities. Only on their computers can you type in a name of anyone on the planet and the computer will, in a matter of nanoseconds, display a mug shot of the person having identified which Jack Smith, Bjorn Andersson or Mohammed Hussain you were referring to without further prompting. I believe there is some sort of mind reading device there. It will also display a profile of the person complete with finger prints and biometric data. But for some reason, if the operator asks for more information, rather than displaying the information as a block of text on the screen in an instant as it would on my computer, the MI5 computer turns into a teletype machine and displays it letter by letter. It also mimics the sound of a demented woodpecker typing a suicide note whilst plummeting to earth having clipped its wings and jumped of the top branch of a giant redwood tree. This slow down of operations is clearly a security device to prevent Al Qaeda spies from hacking into the data. And the sound effects are to foil the listening devices hidden in the Newton’s Cradle sitting innocuously on the processor box.

But then the likes of you and I could never operate these computers. In fact very few people are allowed to type in names into the database. Only a very clever boffin has the brains and the training to do that. After all, he probably invented it. In America, only an elite band of computer programmers are capable of extracting information from these extremely complicated devices. But these are extremely clever people capable of hacking into any Russian spy’s computer after only three attempts at guessing the password.

I know what you’re thinking. This is just TV, it’s not like normal life. Well that bit is true. It’s certainly not like my life. Everything I do on a computer takes three and a half days. Nothing ever goes smoothly. Just a simple thing like copying a file results in one problem after another that never occurred to me would happen – happens. And then something else goes wrong, then the computer hangs, so I have to re-boot, then there is an automatic windows update so it won’t do a thing until it has installed 331 files and I am not allowed to switch my computer off until it is complete. Then when it finally reboots for the 23rd time, the driver I wanted is no longer the correct one and then the registry entry has been deleted meaning I have to reinstall the Windows OS. So it asks me to place the installation CD into the drive. But I don’t have it because it wasn’t included in the bundle I got with the PC.

But I have a close relative who works for the security services and who assures me that the computers in his office do actually make an R2D2 sound when it finds data. And it does type the information like a teletype machine. All the boffins that work there are able to hack into any computer, including the ZX Spectrum that you had forgotten about stashed away in the back of the wardrobe – from their desk. So it must be true. I asked him what was the purpose of the sound effects, but he said that he could tell me – but then he would have to kill me by infecting my food with polonium 210.

I was thinking that if we could get hold of one of these computers how cool would that be? But then I realised that they are very limited. You can’t play Guitar Hero or even Minesweeper on these things. You can’t calculate your expenses on a spread sheet or run iTunes. All you can really do with them is search for enemies of the state or do very complicated calculations like Pi to 3253rd decimal place.

Oh is that the date? – back to the Tardis.

Jihad has ethics and morals because it is for God. That means it is forbidden to kill women, children, elderly people, priests, messengers, traders and the like. Betrayal is prohibited and it is vital to keep promises and treat prisoners of war in a good way. Standing by those ethics is what distinguishes Muslims’ jihad from the wars of other nations (fonte)

By Christopher Andrew

To mark the centenary of its foundation, the British Security Service, MI5, has opened its archives to an independent historian, the first time any of the world’s leading intelligence or security services has taken such a step.

The Defence of the Realm, the book which results, is an unprecedented publication. It reveals the precise role of the Service in twentieth-century British history, from its foundation by Captain Kell of the British Army in October 1909 to root out ‘the spies of the Kaiser’ up to its present role in countering Islamic terrorism.

It describes the distinctive ethos of MI5, how the organization has been managed, its relationship with the government, where it has triumphed and where it has failed. In all of this, no restriction has been placed on the judgements made by the author.

The book also casts new light on many events and periods in British history, showing for example that through well-placed sources MI5 was probably the pre-war department with the best understanding of Hitler’s objectives, and had a remarkable willingness to speak truth to power; how it was so astonishingly successful in turning German agents during the Second World War; and that it had much greater roles than has hitherto been realized during the end of the Empire and in responding to the recurrent fears of successive governments (both Conservative and Labour) and or Cold War Communist subversion.

It has new information about the Profumo affair and its aftermath, about the ‘Magnificent Five’ and about a range of formerly unconfirmed Soviet contacts. It reveals that though MI5 had a file on Harold Wilson it did not plot against him, and it describes what really happened during the failed IRA attack in Gibraltar in March 1988. When Rab Butler was appointed Home Secretary with responsibility for the Security Service in 1957 he didn’t even know where its headquarters were.

The Defence of the Realm now describes this previously extremely secretive organization more fully than any previous book – and identifies all its main buildings on the end papers.

Arrests by British intelligence officers in Manchester and Liverpool early in 2009 led to the uncovering of what would have been the most serious terrorist plot in the US since 9/11.

The arrests in the UK of an alleged al-Qaeda cell accused of planning an Easter terrorism campaign led officers to Najibullah Zazi in New York.

Zazi is said to be part of a group planning to attack the US subway system using truck bombs or suicide bombers with the same explosives used on 21st July in London.

His group has carried out reconnaissance filming on targets including the famous Grand Central station. The information came from security sources stating that Zazi and those arrested in Manchester were all part of a network of terrorists directed from Pakistan.

The network was uncovered due to the arrest of a US national, Bryant Neal Vinas, in Pakistan last November. The 26 year old Vinas aka Bashir al-Ameriki, claims he met Rashid Rauf, a British al-Quaeda commander behind the trans-Atlantic bomb plot.

Vinas was arrested and admitted to receiving training from al-Qaeda and had decided to become a suicide bomber, his mission was to blow up a train on the Long Island Rail Road inside Pennsylvania Station.

Following the arrest further arrests followed in Belgium and then in April 09, Greater Manchester and Liverpool.

Those 12 Pakistani students arrested in Manchester and Liverpool were arrested after GCHQ intercepted emails about girls and cars that were alleged code for a planned attack. All men were released without charge after no bomb making equipment was found.

The government says they were involved in “terrorist operational activity in the UK, most likely attack planning.”

Sources within MI5 have said that the network was co-ordinated by a 23 year old student who can only be identified as XC, he is accused of sending and receiving emails from overseas al-Qaeda representatives.

Ambassador Craig Murray, rector of the University of Dundee, was until 2004 the British Ambassador to Uzbekistan, which he describes as a Stalinist totalitarian state courted and supported by the Americans.

As ambassador, Murray saw the MI5 intelligence reports from the CIA that described the most horrible torture procedures. “People were raped with broken bottles, children were tortured in front of their parents until they [the parents] signed a confession, people were boiled alive.”

Amb. Murray reports that the people delivered by CIA flights to Uzbekistan’s torture prisons “were told to confess to membership in Al Qaeda, … they’d been in training camps in Afghanistan, … they had met Osama bin Laden in person. And the CIA intelligence constantly echoed these themes.”

Murray also saw the documents that proved that the motivation for US and UK military aggression in Afghanistan had to do with the natural gas deposits in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. The Americans wanted a pipeline that bypassed Russia and Iran and went through Afghanistan. To insure this, an invasion was necessary. The idiot American public could be told that the invasion was necessary because of 9/11 and to save them from “terrorism,” and the utter fools would believe the lie.

“You’ll see that undoubtedly the US forces are positioned to guard the pipeline route. It’s what it’s about. It’s about money, it’s about energy, it’s not about democracy.”

And guess who the consultant was who arranged with then Texas governor George W. Bush the agreements that would give Enron the rights to Uzbekistan’s and Turkmenistan’s natural gas deposits, and to Unocal to develop the trans-Afghanistan pipeline? It was Karzai, the US-imposed “president” of Afghanistan, who has no support in the country except for American bayonets.

“I was absolutely stunned,” says the British ambassador, who thought that he served a moral country that, along with its American ally, had moral integrity. Ambassador Murray learned too much and was fired when he vomited it all up. Murray was dismissed from the UK Foreign Service for his revelations. No doubt on orders from Washington.

Two thoughts about Afghanistan. Firstly (the media seemed to miss this) Kim Howell’s interven

Two thoughts about Afghanistan. Firstly (the media seemed to miss this) Kim Howell’s intervention in Westminster recently, was significant, and not just because he’s an ex-FCO minister but because he’s the present Chair of the Intelligence and Security Committee in Parliament. By the way that’s the committee appointed not by parliament but by the prime minister himself, which has oversight of the work of MI5, MI6 and GCHQ.

Most media treatment of Afghanistan focuses upon military analyses of the situation on the ground, but it often misses the point, that it’s the analysis of where the greatest international risk lies which should be central to the discussion. It is highly likely that Kim has been told by ‘the spooks’ where the greatest risk lies – and that place is not Afghanistan. Maybe ‘the spooks’ are wrong, but it’s surely time for the proposition: that Afghanistan is the place of greatest risk to the safety of UK citizens was tested. This test should lead to the conclusion that we need many more intelligence folk and fewer military men speaking out about defence and terrorism on TV and Radio.

Secondly, the death of five soldiers at the hand of a British trained, Afghan policeman is far more serious than commentators or spokespeople have suggested. In today’s papers, General Jim Dutton, Deputy Commander of ISAF, says ‘this kind of thing is likely to happen again’. Yesterday, another senior officer said ‘we have to trust the uniform of the Afghan police’. If there is a repeat of this terrible incident, it’s game over for UK forces there. Operating procedures on the ground in Afghanistan will have already changed markedly as a result of this devastating breach of trust - why, exactly, should any soldier ‘trust the uniform of the Afghan police’? Would you?

New safety precautions will distance UK troops from their Afghan trainees and this will have the effect of slowing down training and undermining good work – all this against a backdrop of a huge planned increase in projected numbers to be trained – our apparent ‘exit strategy’.

I think our ‘exit strategy’ is becoming more obvious and it can not wait for a competent Afghan police force to emerge. I sense that Gordon Brown is thinking along these lines too and his speech today suggests that.

(source : http://www.presos.org.es/ 04/11/09, traduction Futur Rouge)

The brand new 8th series premiers this Wednesday at 9pm GMT on BBC1. It’s fair to say that Spooks is one of my most favourite TV series and certainly one of the very best things that the BBC airs each year.

From the BBC press office:

Award-winning drama Spooks is back in production, for a fantastic, high octane eighth series and is set to return to BBC One this autumn.

Following the dramatic climax of series seven, viewers will be on the edge of their seats, eagerly waiting to find out which of the country’s finest spies will return to their screens in the Kudos Film and Television production.

The critically-acclaimed last series saw the appointment of ice cold Ros Myers (Hermione Norris) to Head of Section D and the release of Lucas North (Richard Armitage) after eight years in a Russian prison.

Harry Pearce’s (Peter Firth) elite team of spies were forced to quickly adapt to their new dynamic following the death of Adam Carter, but there was no time to mourn their colleague as the Russians descended on London and a mole within Section D was discovered.

In the explosive finale of the series, old school spy Connie James was exposed as the Russian’s insider and, in a race to save London from a nuclear explosion, she paid the ultimate price for betrayal, sacrificing herself to save Ros and Lucas.

Although London was saved from disaster, it’s not over for Section D as Harry is missing in action following a meet with the Russian intelligence services, the FSB, and was last seen being bundled into the boot of a car…

Source: BBC

Preview from Radio Times:

British television isn’t much cop at straight-down-the-line thrillers; writers and producers get bogged down in characterisation and delivering right-on messages and lose sight of the fact that thrillers should be – yes – thrilling. Which brings us to Spooks. Those in the know are sniffy about it, claiming it’s nothing like MI5. I should hope not; it’s torrid, preposterous and frequently ridiculously overheated. And I love it to pieces, because Spooks is a rarity: a genuinely exciting, madly engaging drama that grabs you by the wrists and simply won’t let go. At the end of the last series it looked as if the game was up for spy boss Harry (the splendid Peter Firth) after he was kidnapped by a rogue band of utter rotters. As we start a new series, things still look bleak – and they get bleaker still when a familiar face arrives back on the Grid and lives are in danger. I’m being deliberately coy here, but there are simply too many surprises. It’s best just to buckle up and prepare yourselves for a trademark dizzying Spooks funfair ride as stern people in black stride down corridors and no one trusts anyone else. Part two is on BBC3 at 9:00pm on Friday.

Richard Armitage as Lucas THERE was a knock on the dressing room door while I was interviewing Richa

Richard Armitage as Lucas

THERE was a knock on the dressing room door while I was interviewing Richard Armitage on set for the new series of Spooks.

Yet another crisis had engulfed the small MI5 team responsible for saving us, and the rest of the world, on a weekly basis.

In the face of global warming and the threat of nuclear war, one more vital resource had run out at Thames House.

“There’s a milk shortage on The Grid,” apologised Richard.

So without the benefit of tea, we carried on.

You’d have been proud.

Today’s TV feature on Richard, who plays Lucas North, and the new series is here.

As ever, space was tighter than the Spooks’ milk budget.

So dedicated Spooks – and Richard Armitage fans – may like to read some of the extras below.

Everyone else is excused…though would you mind popping out for two pints of organic semi-skimmed?

Thanks ever so.

***************************************************************

Assuming you’ve first made friends with the feature here, then read on:

1. The Spooks new series production release, issued before filming began, spoke about the MI5 team going into deeper and more dangerous territory:

“I suppose we did go into deeper, darker territory. It’s quite an intense shoot and it feels like we’ve had less and less time to do it. But actually we’ve had the same amount of time. I think the scripts have got more ambitious this year and it seems much more dense and the political landscape is ever changing.

Peter Firth as Harry

“The scripts morph as things crop up in the news. So it does keep you on your toes. At one point we started doing episodes six and seven and then we’ve had to go back to five and eight, which under normal circumstances is OK.

“But because the scripts were quite loose at that point, it really plays with your head a bit. So when you’re working on an episode you have to get your head completely around the politics. Otherwise you just lose track of what you’re saying.

“With Lucas, we’ve got the needle into the past – I think it’s around episode four. We’ve scratched the surface in the first series but this year we revisit in more depth what happened to him.”

2. Lucas gets close to new CIA liaison officer Sarah Caulfield in the new series:

“I think that he’s monitored by his team because he’s been compromised in the past and the fact that he has been caught and imprisoned in Russia means that he has a fatal flaw in him. I think there’s always the potential for somebody to stumble and fall again.

“There’s a maverick in Lucas. He enjoys the thrill of the chase and there is a point in the series…the writers didn’t write it but I decided in myself that this was the point where Lucas could potentially have turned. And there is a moment when he considers what it would be like to join the bad side. It’s not really explored in the story but it’s the moment where Lucas would be tested. So I entertained the idea.

“Sarah Caulfield is a really interesting character. I think I’d describe her as being a very complicated girl and I think it’s in episode seven, she gets Lucas in a bit of a mess.

“It starts off as a power struggle between two professionals. That then turns into a sort of sexual power struggle and then it turns into quite an honest love affair which screws Lucas up and actually screws Sarah Caulfield up a bit. The courses that they’re both on start to become compromised because of the fact that they do fall in love with each other.

Harry and Ruth

“The first step he takes towards her in terms of that attraction is very much about domination. They’re toying with each other a bit and he’s made professional promises to her – I’ll deliver this to you if you give me this. And then he ducks out of the deal. So she double crosses him.

“The first sexual encounter between them is very much about Lucas taking control of her, being manipulated by a very attractive woman who’s using her sexuality as much as anything else to get him to do what she wants.

“It initially starts as quite an intense professional conflict that becomes sexual but then he gets all involved with her. He can’t get enough of her and can’t leave her alone. You’ll fall in love with Genevieve O’Reilly, who plays Sarah. She’s brilliant.”

3. The race to find Harry (Peter Firth) in episode one:

“In my head, when that episode hadn’t been written, I thought that the team would be out there kicking ass, trying to get him back. But actually the reality of it is that they are bound to the Grid and they’re sort of helpless. All they’ve got is information and photographs. They’re treading water because they really have got no clues. They’re just assembling all the evidence which would lead to his captor. So the team feel quite helpless. But it actually makes for quite an intense episode – they’re all in quite a sticky situation. The final 10 minutes of episode one is just brilliant.”

4. Ros takes over in Harry’s absence:

“Ros takes control of the situation and everyone else slots into place. That’s what’s been interesting about this series, everyone’s roles have been much more clearly defined. In each episode, whenever a case happens, you know which line your character is going to follow. It’s very clear and all the characters seem to sit very comfortably with what they’ve got to do.

Ros and Lucas

“I think it works very well with Ros as the Head of Section and Lucas and Ros are working really well together. There’s a lot of banter between them, which I really enjoy. They’ve got the same sense of humour and, I think, the same sense of danger.

“When Lucas strikes up this relationship with Sarah Caulfield, Ros is slightly dismissive of it but sees something, has a little poke around, she tries to stir things up in Lucas. She’s testing to see whether it’s real or whether it’s going to compromise him. I think she enjoys teasing him about it and it’s been quite fun to play as well.”

5. Spooks always has to raise the bar with each new series:

“Yeah, there is that pressure. You are a slave to the scripts pretty much, so you can only deliver as much as the script allows you to do. They’ve taken time to form and sometimes they’ve arrived in pieces, but that’s kind of fun to do that.

“Episode eight…we arrived at the beginning of the block and we were shooting scenes that we had no idea where they were going to fit into the episode and what was around them. So the editor was coming down and saying, ‘OK, these are the scenes that haven’t been written yet but this is what’s going to happen.’ The episode…it feels like that, it’s like all hell’s breaking loose and these characters are stranded in the middle of this chaos and they just don’t know which direction to take. It’s a lost cause, really. So that’s very exciting.

“The scripts feel more ambitious. When there’s a fight sequence, a special effect or a siege or something, all of us meet and the director says, ‘This is something that Spooks has done before, it does it very well, but we can’t let that happen again. We’ve got to increase the stakes. We’ve got to make it look even more difficult. The explosion has got to look more real.’ And so I think everyone is conscious that that bar has been raised and we’re all trying to leap it.”

6. The new series sees the arrival on The Grid of Tariq Masood, played by Shazad Latif:

“I guess he would have been described as a geek in the breakdown but actually he’s turned up and he’s more computer genius. There’s a bridge because the old fashioned M character in Bond that did all the gadgetry, it’s had to change in the 21st century and it’s all cyberstuff. And he’s really fast and he’s 17 or 18. So he’s probably the youngest cast member.”

Lucas wonders if he should delete his Facebook account

7. Does Lucas have much interaction with Tariq?

“There’s a bit of nurturing. He comes in and he’s a bit slack and he’s a bit of a wide boy. There’s quite a lot of banter about toe the line otherwise Ros will have your nuts, kind of thing, which is quite funny.

“I keep wanting them to get in little digs about the head of MI5 being on Facebook. I keep saying, ‘Oh come on, you’ve got to slip that line in – How are we going to find out what he’s up to? Well, just have a look on Facebook.’”

8. Would Richard be happy to return if series nine gets the go-ahead for 2010?

“Yeah, if I get invited back. Have I been naughty? Have I toed the line? There’s a big cliffhanger in episode eight, shock horror, and you don’t know who’s gone and who’s survived. Another one of those.”

9. Richard’s real life dealings with America’s CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) and Russia’s FSB (Federal Security Service):

“When we first started we had a really brilliant session with a guy from the CIA and a guy from the FSB. We sat down with them and had a couple of hours chat. I really wish we’d have had an MI5 person but I think at that point we were looking outwards, rather than inwards. It was fascinating to see the difference, the contrast. The CIA guy did not stop talking for the whole interview. We suspect he wanted to be a movie star, he wouldn’t shut up. But the FSB guy in a black polo neck just sat there. It was really interesting.

“Any time the CIA guy was questioned about the ethics of certain torture methods, he would go, ‘No, no, no, we can’t do that.’ And the FSB guy would go, ‘Whatever it takes.’ He couldn’t have been more stereotypical.

“I think the research department have people that they talk to. But it’s not always that helpful, especially on a show like this, because more often than not the job is farmed out to more people and there’s a lot more paperwork involved. And I think that sometimes when you want something to happen in a script, if you go to the source and they say, ‘Well, no, that really wouldn’t happen,’ it can pin you down a bit.

“I think they try to be as truthful as possible. But there are more than four people saving the UK from disaster every week, I’m sure.”

Just wild about Harry: Ruth (Nicola Walker) and Amish (Ace Bhatti)

10. Spooks’ trademark is being ahead of the news. Is there anything in this series that has really shocked you?

“Yeah. Episode eight. This group of people that are stoking the flames of the conflict between India and Pakistan..the episode kicks off with some kind of conflict over a nuclear submarine and I opened The Times last week and I think it’s India that were developing some kind of nuclear submarine and China and Pakistan were getting a bit itchy about it. I was like, ‘This is our episode.’ And there it is in the actual news. You read our script and go, ‘No, that wouldn’t happen, it’s ridiculous.’ Then in the paper, there it is.

“It just makes you realise that what’s on our page, although it’s fictional and the narrative is stretched dramatically, there is a root in the truth. So when you get very scary episodes you think, ‘It’s all possible.’”

11. Harry and Lucas?

“There’s always conflict. The thing about Lucas and Harry is that Harry is the father that never says well done. And I think because Lucas has failed him once in a big way, I think there’s irreconcilable damage that’s been done to that relationship. It means that that relationship will continue because Lucas really needs Harry to turn round and go, ‘Yeah, you did well, I’m proud of you.’ And he’ll never get it. So that’s good. It keeps it in flux.”

12. Harry and Ruth?

“Harry and Ruth are developing nicely. It’s nice…”

*Spooks returns to BBC1 at 9pm next Wednesday – Nov 4.

They would say that, wouldn’t they? Any evidence of MI5 and MI6 involvement in the rendition a

They would say that, wouldn’t they?

Any evidence of MI5 and MI6 involvement in the rendition and torture of Britons now seeking damages must be heard behind closed doors, the government told the high court today.

In a move with profound implications for how the security and intelligence agencies can be held to account, ministers want the evidence to be withheld from the victims of illegal activities and their lawyers.

It is the first time the government has asked the courts to rule that evidence should be kept secret in a civil case involving claims for damages. “I entirely accept [it] is a departure” from the normal course of such litigation, Jonathan Crow QC, for the agencies, the Home Office, the Foreign Office and the attorney general, told Mr Justice Silber.

He said that although such a “closed” procedure had never before been adopted in a civil claim for damages, there was no reason in principle why it should not be used if it was necessary for what he called “the just disposal of the case”.

The concept of fairness was “constantly evolving”, he added. An alternative would be to “strike out” the claim launched by seven former detainees.

The seven are Binyam Mohamed, Bisher al-Rawi, Jamil el-Banna, Richard Belmar, Omar Deghayes, Moazzam Begg, and Martin Mubanga. All are British citizens or residents who were held at Guantánamo Bay.

The government wants the evidence of what MI5, MI6 and other officials knew of the torture or mistreatment, and in particular what the CIA told them, to be shown in secret to special advocates appointed by the attorney general, Lady Scotland.
