Rap-stress Mia X finally returns to the limelight after being absent from the industry for more than 10 years…

Born Mia Young, she was the very first female emcee inked to Master P’s mid-nineties powerhouse imprint, No Limit Records. From 1995 to ’98, Mia released three acclaimed solo albums; ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’, the gold certified ‘Unlady Like’, and her third and final effort, ‘Mama Drama’, before graciously bowing out of the rap game altogether. Unfortunately, during her musical hiatus Mia suffered several personal setbacks; primarily the unexpected and tragic passing of both her mother and father, as well as the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Suddenly, she was left to care for not only her own children, but also her youngest sister, Ashley, who thanks to Mia’s undying love and support, recently graduated from L.S.U. Medical with honors.

Although the self-proclaimed ‘Unlady Like Diva’ briefly returned in 2006 with “Verbal Assault,” a track produced by Donald XL Robertson that appeared on the popular ‘Southern Smoke Mix-Tape Series’, and a pair of songs on C-Murder’s ‘Screamin’ 4 Vengeance’ in 2008, no project ever materialized. Now that is all about to change. Mia X’s highly anticipated, fourth studio LP, ‘Betty Rocka Locksmith’, which she is currently finishing up work on, is being introduced by its first two offerings. They include the radio ready, “1 Life 1 Love,” which she’ll be shooting a video for soon, and “Get Da Paper,” an ode to eighties Hip-Hop. Betty Rocka Locksmith is currently scheduled to be released in February 2010. Although she’s definitely an awesome female emcee, I wonder if she will market the same image as she did earlier in her career. And if so, will it be enough to keep up with current femcees like Trina and Nikki Minaj.

New Orleans’ Hip-hop for Hope, Soundclash, and Grassroots present HIP-HOP FOR HOPE 2009…

NEW ORLEANS –– On November 14th, 2009 New Orleans Hip-Hop for Hope will partner with Soundclash and Grassroots! to host HIP-HOP FOR HOPE 2009 at Tipitina’s Uptown, to benefit the Roots of Music program (www.rootsofmusic.org), 2-Cent Entertainment’s “Change We Can Create” Summer Program (www.2-Cent.com) and the Benjamin Foundation. Hip-Hop for Hope’s annual benefit concert has raised over $19,000 in the past three years for various educational programs in New Orleans.

This year, the fundraising aims directly at the role of music in education. The Roots of Music program is run by Rebirth Brass Band’s own Derrick Tabb, currently nominated for a CNN Hero’s award for his efforts. The program provides music education in history, theory, instrumental instruction and ensemble performance. Furthermore, academic tutoring is offered to ensure the students maintain at least a 2.5 GPA in school. 2-Cent Entertainment’s “Change We Can Create” Summer Program empowers students through a 7-week mentorship program, while they learn how to express their voices on a variety of issues through video production. The Benjamin Foundation supports a non-profit summer camp run by Q93’s own Wild Wayne, with the mission to “get kids off the streets and provide them with academic enhancement, guidance, direction, culture, experiences and love.”

In the nineties a series of hiphop bad girls appeared, not afraid to be compared with the men, rapwi

In the nineties a series of hiphop bad girls appeared, not afraid to be compared with the men, rapwise or streetwise. These girls where hard as rocks, made just as hard tunes as anyone else, weren’t afraid to celebrate their sexuality, nor afraid to beat up some skank in the beauty parlor (for which Foxy eventually got a year in pen). In New York you had Lil’Kim and Foxy Brown. In the south Master P’s No Limit gave us Mia X and Mercedes, paving the way for artist like Gangsta Boo,”da baddest bitch” Trina and Khia. Since then this unfortunately seems to have disappeared. Now i’m not gonna claim that i’ve been looking that hard, but lately it seems most girls have been dancing and singing softly on the screen, rather than boasting about their gangsta cred.

The hope that this could be the return of the self confident bad bitch, and the excellent production credits, is what made me give a chance to Mz Bratt’s Give It To Them Vol.2. A mistake as it turned out.

First thing that should be noted about this is it’s a free download, which i guess is the reason that it’s a mixed cd with short versions of the originals and a seriously annoying Mz Bratt talking all over it. The idea i guess i to give some previews and get some hype before the real release.

Secondly; unfortunately Mz Bratt is no bad bitch on this release. Instead she seems to have chosen to go the way of Tinchy stryder and Chipmunk, dancey, electro, RnB, aimed i suppose for the charts. Not aimed at me at at least. This formula takes up most of the mixtape. Whether this is good or bad tunes for the genre i couldn’t say. They are not made me for me. They sound kind of crappy, but so does most of that music to my ears.

Three tunes stand out though. “Warning” is ok, but mostly because of Bruza and Tinie Tempah, “This Year” with Griminal is good, at least, it’s grime. And “Best Crawler freestyle” with Bruza is a monster. But this is really Terror Danjah proving he can bang out a great tune when he wants to.

The conclusion must be, Mz Bratt is no grime princess, and no Gangsta Boo. She’s mediocre, middle of the road, hoping for the charts and loosing evertything interesting about herself in the process. I will have to look for my grime elsewhere and i will have to look for the bad bitch somewhere else as well.

First off, I’ll catch A LOT of flack if I don’t start this thing off righ,t so shout out to Frank Whyte. We had a wonderful discussion about Jay-Z, Kanye West and the industry last night and this morning we picked up right where we left off. He made sure he played some Jay-Z first thing this morning for my listening pleasure. American Dreamin’ from American Gangster was his choice to perk me up. I wish he would have played Who You Wit II. After dropping, Mr. Whyte off at the train, I picked up where I left off yesterday with the No Limit Soldier, Mystikal. I wonder why no one has a “Free Mystikal” campaign? Fuck it. ”FREE MYSTIKAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Anyone know when he gets out???? In case ya’ll forgot how dope Mystikal was, let me reassure you. Dude was dope. He definitely had his own style and even matched Busta Rhymes’ energy on Iz They Wildin With Us. His album, Unpredictable is a dope ass album minus the features from Silkk The Shocker, Mia X and Master P. I used to play this album a lot back in high school(awwwwwwwww my glory days) but I didn’t really know if I would like it the same way. I actually like it more than I remember. To my own surprised, Mystikal has several joints where he brags about his mic/emceeing skills. All I remembered from Mystikal was him just being over the top. Dude is definitely dope. I could pick a bunch of songs from Unpredictable but my favorite shit right now is 13 Years. He talks about his come up and how he got his deal and whatnot. I wasn’t a huge No Limit fan but Mystikal definitely saved their whole label for me with Unpredictable. Like I said, FREE MYSTIKAL and enjoy 13 years. Not sure if ya’ll remember but No Limit used to RUN SHIT. Shout out to Master P-Nut.
