As I was writing my review for BFTE the other day I was poking around the site and ended up ordering

As I was writing my review for BFTE the other day I was poking around the site and ended up ordering ten different samples. I was really excited to try some more of their bright shades, I was so impressed with 10$ Pineapple.

From top to bottom, left to right : Illusion, Bitter, Tangerine, Blue Bird, Black Cherry, Big Ego, Angel, Envy, Ocean Mist, and Addicted.

Sitting down to swatch them today I ran across something pretty interesting.

Ocean Mist, a light blue green with some sparkle, is listed as a Primary Pigment. It’s a match to GDE Dirty Jeans and HN Hush A Bye.

Blue Bird is not listed as a Primary Pigment. Oddly enough it is a match for TKB’s Sapphire.

Tangerine, a brilliant juicy medium orange with golden shimmer, is listed as a Primary and matches Tangerine POP!.

Addicted, a warm red base with cool red shimmer, making this the perfectly balanced ruby red, another Primary Pigment is a match to TKB’s Hot Moma.

I’m confused as to why some of the Primary Pigments are not listed correctly, but it also lends further proof to the question regarding Heavenly Natural’s Hush A Bye, since both BFTE and GDE admit their matches are repackaged. I just think it’s crazy I managed to order that same color three times, I must really love it!!

I was blog surfing, jumping from blog to blog reading through EOTD’s and comments and stumbled

I was blog surfing, jumping from blog to blog reading through EOTD’s and comments and stumbled across a blog with some really interesting looks. The blogger raved about Heavenly Naturals and how she has all the colors and how amazing they are. That was enough to send me to Etsy to find them

Ordering

Once I found the Heavenly Naturals shop on Etsy I took some time to look around. They sell a pretty interesting selection of products, including mineral shadows, blushes, fountations and the like as well as a few different lip and body products.

They have a really cute logo, and looking around the shop things were well organized and the listings seemed complete, although they do not list ingredients.

I’ll admit something right up front. When I look through Etsy shops now I can spot most repackaged shades right away. Looking through the eye shadows here I spotted a few. I was even able to pick out a few of the glitters, as well.

She sells a variety of foundations as well as some fixatives.

After looking at everything available I ending up ordering:

Handmade Lip Butter in Tangerine

Rare Beauty Mineral Pigment

Hush A Bye Eyeshadow

Shipping

I ordered on November 16th and received my order on November 21st. In general I’ve noticed that Etsy shops ship very quickly. I think this is due in part to the feedback system. Slow shipping and poor communication would be subject to negative reviews.

Packaging

My order was received in a regular mailer. Inside my shadows where inside a bright pink organza bag with a business card, and two free samples but no invoice.

One of the jars has a really cute clear label with their logo and one has a BRIGHT pink paper label. Both contain ingredient information. The balm came in a larger clear jar with a custom label of the flavor (a tangerine) on the top. It also contains ingredient information. So many Etsy shops don’t supply this info at all, or simply print it in the listing, so I was very pleased to see it on the jar.

Products / Colors

The shadows come in 5gram jars with sifters. I noticed the pink wasn’t quite full but the blue was jam packed, probably giving you a full 2grams of shadow.

I was pretty excited to try the bright magenta shade I ordered, Rare Beauty.

Rare Beauty Eye Candy is a dangerously desirable intense color, not for the meek or mild. If you have a bit of a wild side then you’ll love this color, it is not a usual everyday run of the mill sort of color. But then again you are not an everyday run of the mill sort of person. So get some today!

I’m always excited to find a nice bright matte, but this pink has all the hallmarks of a matte. It’s sort of gritty and splotchy and doesn’t blend easily. However, applied wet, the color is wonderful. There is a very fine line between it being too thin and not having enough coverage to being too thick. If it’s too thick is will crack when dried, almost like mud. Just the right mix, though, and this makes a really unique matte eye liner.

The other color I purchased, Hush A Bye was very pretty on the site. I’m all of a sudden ordering so many new colors way out of my comfort zone, like this baby blue. It arrived the same day my Glamour Doll Eyes order did and as I sat here at my desk unpackaging things and making notes I realized that Hush a Bye and Dirty Jeans from GDE are the exact same color. I swatched them on my hand next to each other and my heart sank.

I did email Vee from Glamour Doll eyes that day, and I heard back from her last night. She confirms that her color, Dirty Jean, is in fact repacakged, which logicly would mean that Hush a Bye is also a repackaged shade, although both are blended on a base.

From left to right: HN Hush a Bye, GDE Dirty Jeans

I looked at the samples I received, and those too I was able to match to colors I already have from a wholesaler.

The Lip Butter was hand made to order, and has an amazing citrus scent and flavor to it. It’s very emollient and I do like it.

Conclusion

Would I order from Heavenly Naturals again? No.

I matched three of the four colors I got to something I already had. In my opinion that’s not very unique.

The matte formula, while bright, has consistency issues.

While they do have a wide variety of other things on their site, I could easily get those from someplace else.

My big project today?

It’s not a turkey and all the fixings.

I’m going to try my hand at pressing some minerals into a palette.

I’ve watched a few videos and read a few tutorials, so I’m fairly confident I can do it. I’m going to mix some straight mica with some C-Smax for a light base before I press. I’m using a collection of POP! and other bright colors. Hopefully it’s going to make an awesome Christmas present for someone special!

Anyone done this before? Tips? Hints?

Don't Be a Turkey This Thanksgiving - Thank a Farmer

If you’ve been listening to the radio lately, you may have heard some new advertisements from Monsan

If you’ve been listening to the radio lately, you may have heard some new advertisements from Monsanto that aim to raise awareness of the contributions of the American farmer. The ads articulate the positive impacts American farmers have on our economy as well as their efforts to preserve and care for the land. On Thanksgiving Day, we will also begin running television ads. These ads will feature real American farmers and echo the message of the radio ads.

Interestingly enough, we discovered that as we began to run our ads, many other people, organizations and companies were also out there paying tribute to recognize the hard work of the American farmer this Thanksgiving. In addition to Monsanto, ADM and the Montana Farm Bureau are running advertisements aimed at consumers. As of today, state governors in AZ, CO, GA, KS, KY, NC, ND, SD, OK, WA, WI, WY have declared “Thank Your Farmers and Ranchers Day” in their states.

There are several ways you can thank a farmer on-line. The National Corn Growers Association enables you to send an e-mail to your friends and family via their Web site reminding them to give thanks to farmers this holiday. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association has a message board set up so that you can leave your note of thanks. Monsanto also has a new section of our site dedicated to thanking farmers. I know many of my friends and colleagues are posting Facebook status updates or Twitter updates thanking farmers for their daily consumption of food, fiber and fuel.

This year has been a tough year for the American farmer. We’ve read about the crisis facing our dairy farmers. The H1N1 virus has hurt pork farmers. And row crop farmers? Well, they’ve had a wet, wet fall and most are still working on harvest. In fact, many of them will spend Thanksgiving Day away from their family, working to bring in the rest of the crop

When you sit down to dinner with your family and friends this year, remember to offer a word of thanks to hard-working American farmers who help make this day, and every day, possible.

Looking a place to thank America’s Farmers? Check out Monsanto’s website.

Fyrinnae is not a “mineral” makeup company. We create unique cosmetics, all of which are

Fyrinnae is not a “mineral” makeup company. We create unique cosmetics, all of which are vegan (this means no silk, carmine, pearl, beeswax, etc). Shipping is free on orders over $20 USD worldwide (very low postage rates for smaller orders, too: never exceeds $3.00 domestic or $3.50 international!), and sample sizes are available on most products. No minimum purchase: order a single sample if you’d like. We’re dedicated to serving customers around the world of any gender, and any skintone.

Ordering:

The Fyrinnae website relatively easy to navigate It’s on a black background, which again, I tend not to like. The categories run down the side, with your account information in the header. When you’re shopping your cart will remain on the sidebar keeping a running tally for you. I love that feature, more sites need to do that.

They sell a wide variety of products, shadows, liners, glosses, finishes, and blushes, not to mention brushes and glitters and pigment.

The first time I ordered I ordered:

Ravens and Writing Desks loose shadow

Inks Eyeliner in Intoxicating

A sample of Android Angel loose shadow

Mini lip lustre in Dark Spiral

The second time I ordered I ordered:

Pixie Epoxy

Sleepy Hollow loose shadow

Bite Me Professional loose shadow

A sample of Mesmerize Glow Blush

A sample of Tasmanian Devil loose shadow

A sample of Blue Whale loose shadow

After having a question about my second order I sent a quick email off, asking about my log in info, since I made an account with my email, but it also created an account under my Paypal address, and they aren’t the same. The responses I got were quick and polite and very helpful.

Their prices seems very competitive and affordable, and with free shipping on orders over 20$ you can actually get quite a few things even on a budget.

Shipping

I placed my first order on October 30th and it arrived November 12th. I placed the second order on November 13th and it arrived on November 21st. There is a notice on the site stating:

November: Allow about 8-12 business days queue and creation time for most orders (this frame excludes weekends and holidays), though most are sent in less time, depending on order size. Ever wonder, large amount of orders aside, about the time frame? Please click our Eye Shadow link at the very bottom of this page…

Each time my shipping was considerably less then stated, so I was really pleased. Either way I don’t mind ordering and waiting as long as it’s posted and it’s reasonable. Reasonable to me is knowing I was ordering several non-eyeshadow products that might require custom mixing, etc etc, not 2-4 weeks for just shadows. This company has a reputation for quick shipping, so even with this disclaimer I was confident they would arrive promptly.

Packaging

Both my orders arrived packaged the same. They were wrapped in tissue paper (zebra print that matches the site, really cute), then placed into a sealed plastic bag, then wrapped in cardboard to keep them stable, and then inside the mailer. It is some of the most careful packaging I’ve run across so far. Inside I also found my invoice with a thank you written on it as well.

I honestly don’t remember which sample I got with my first order, but I do remember I got one small sample jar. I do know my second came with several generous samples (packaged in jars) of colors that complimented what I ordered. I love it when companies match the samples on what your interests are by checking out what you actually ordered. I’ve had some recently actually include samples of the colors I ORDERED. I like it when IF you’re going to offer samples, you pay attention enough to make them useful.

Product / Colors

This is where my reviews going to get wonky. When I placed my first order I really wasn’t pleased with what I’d received. I wasn’t sure if it was WHAT I ordered or exactly what was wrong. All I needed to know what that SO many people were raving about them that I decided that it was probably me, and I should place another order to see if it was perhaps just the items I picked the first time.

My first order.

Lip Lustre - Dark Spiral

I didn’t like this at all. My mini tube of product was really really thin, almost slippery. It has a tiny gritty consistency when I rub my lips together that makes me instantly think of mud. It feathers off my lips in little lines. I tried shaking it up, thinking the product was settled or something. But no. I just cannot get this to work for me. The color is a beautiful purple, but it’s too thin, I can’t get coverage on my lips and it practically melts off.

Eye Inks – Intoxicating

I have NO idea what I was thinking when I ordered this. The color, Intoxicating, was described as – silvery lavender shade which changes from green to silver to pink. It sounded just amazing. These inks are meant to be used in the waterline, so I was like OMGWOWSOEXCITED. But every time I tried to use this I failed. It would streak across my eyeball and freak me out. I couldn’t get it to apply to my waterline and STAY THERE. They say it won’t dry all the way, so I just don’t get it.

So after those two disappointing products, I was just not really excited about the order anymore. I put away the shadows to be reviewed after I got my second order.

Second Order

This one was much much more successful.

Pixie Epoxy -

Originally developed and formulated for a friend/pro artist, this unique “glue” is designed to hold the sparkliest, most shimmery eye shadows in place and minimize “fallout”. It has been used since 2008 and tested more recently among a handful of clientelle prior to retail release in 8/2009. Can also be used to retain a “wet” or “glossy” look to loose shadows. Don’t worry, it’s easily washed off, and while keeps shadows in a water-resistant state, the product itself is water-soluble (no silicones or oils).

By applying a light coat and letting it dry till it’s sticky it’s like glue for your glitters. It’s not a primer, it does nothing for matte or plain shimmery shades, but if you run across a shadow that has lots of glitter in it, this would be perfect applied lightly under it. It works AMAZINGLY and now I’m not so stumped as to how to use my growing collection of GOOD cosmetic glitters (from AL, GDE, etc.).

The Eye Shadows -

From top to bottom, left to right : Bite Me Pro, Sleepy Hollow, Ravens & Writing Desks, Kamikaze, Android Angel, Shinigami, Blue Whale, Tasmanian Devil, and Arcane Magics Faerie Glamour. On the left is Glow Blush in Mesmerize.

Once I sat down and started swatching, I was very pleased, very impressed. The colors are bright and clear, there is no question that Fyrinnae has mastered color theory, which seems to be a problem in the growing MM market. The formula is also really intriguing. I’m not even going to try to understand it or break it down. While it does seem to be based on mica, it’s very smooth and powdery. Not all of them are ‘creamy’ like a lot of the mineral shadows I love. Which is why I wasn’t sure I would like them.

The colors I got are amazing, Ravens and Writing Desks is actually a matte, which I missed when I ordered it, but it’s got a fairly nice consistency. Bite Me, which is a Pro color, is an AMAZING red, just about what I was looking for, and no carmine.

The full sized shadows come in 5gram jars just JAMMED full with no sifters, so you’re getting almost 3grams of product for 5.25$ a jar.

Conclusion

Would I order from Fyrinna again? Yes.

I love that they are vegan. No bug bits in my cosmetics.

The shadows are amazing, even if I did have a rough start with some of their other products.

I was impressed with their quick responses to my emails.

Here’s a description from the press release:

“On Monday Nov. 30th, students from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and Goucher College will gather for ‘Constellation to Copenhagen: a Climate Justice Spectacular’ to protest Constellation Energy’s use of mountaintop removal coal and demand that the company transition from coal, nuclear and oil to clean energy sources. This event is staged in relation to the international climate negotiations being made in Copenhagen this December. Students will gather in costume with puppets and mountain signs in front of the MICA Brown Center and depart from the MICA campus around noon. The group will parade down North Charles Street to the Constellation Energy Commodity Group Building in the Inner Harbor. There, they will read and deliver an 8 foot by 11.5 foot letter addressed to Constellation Energy outlining their demands.”

GDE was another company that recently disclosed the fact that many of their shadows are prepackaged.

GDE was another company that recently disclosed the fact that many of their shadows are prepackaged. In fact the owner, Vee, went so far as to make a video about it, explaining things. I appreciated her honesty, so I gave her the benefit of the doubt and placed a small order.

Ordering

Glamour Doll Eyes has a really cute Zen Cart based site. It’s easy to navigate, but with a lot of Zen Cart based shops, getting to your cart is a little tricky, until you place something in your cart, there is no ‘Shopping Cart’ feature on your screen. So unless you’re paying attention you might miss it, and if you use the back button to navigate it won’t show up unless for some reason you refresh.

They sell shadows, glitters, blushes, and balms.

At 8$ a jar for shadow it’s a little on the high end compared to many other companies, more so since she acknowledged many of them are not original colors.. You can purchase the shadows in Collections to save a little, but you don’t really get to pick your own colors, thankfully there was a Collection with some shades I wanted to try. Sample jars are 3.50$, sample baggies are 2.00$.

I ordered:

The Bad Gal Collection

A sample jar of Galaxy

A sample jar of Glowstick

Legwarmers Goodie Balm

Shipping

I had ordered on November 8th. The Goodie Balm arrived within days and I received the rest of my order on November 22nd. I checked for any posted delays and at that time there was none posted. Now, however, there is a notice stating they are on vacation :

PLEASE NOTE: Glamour Doll will be taking a break and going to California for Thanksgiving. Any orders after Tuesday, November 18th WILL NOT START PROCESSING until December 2nd. I will return from California on December 15th but will have access to my supplies after the 2nd. Please keep this in mind when ordering within the next month or 2 and if you need anything by a specific date, please email me first! Thank you.

Also reading further on the page it states that she processes order as they come in, and “orders are made FRESH after you order them to insure that you get a brand new product and not something that has been sitting around.” So I assume this mean she doesn’t carry stock and you have to wait for her to make each small jar of your order. It makes me curious as to how she manages that. It’s also sort of, in my opinion, misleading to use the word ‘fresh’. Mineral makeup is all natural with no additives or chemicals that would ‘go bad’ in a sealed jar otherwise. Her normal processing times are 2 – 4 weeks after payment. Shipping is free for orders over 30$.

Packaging

My orders both arrived in plain envelope mailers, I was surprised it wasn’t a bubble mailer. Inside the first envelope was my Goodie Balm wrapped in some tissue. When my second order arrived my shadows where packaged in a little baggie to keep them all together as well as two small samples and a few business cards. Neither of them included an invoice, although the bag from the Goodie Balm had a handwritten thank you on the flap.

Product / Colors

Each shadow comes in a 5gram jar, again giving you 2grams of actual product. The labels are adorable, I totally love them, but they don’t contain ingredient information. The jars also don’t come with a sifter, so you may be getting a little bit more product. I personally remove the sifter on most, if not all, of my shadows anyway.

From top to bottom, left to right : Leather & Lace, Violent, Dirty Jeans, Secretive, Galaxy, and Glowstick.

The Bad Gal Collection included four colors:

Dirty Jeans is teal green and rubs into green-blue with golden hues. This color happened to be a pretty close match to an item from an Etsy order I’m planning on reviewing later in the week. In fact, both orders arrived the same day, so it was one of the more obvious dupes I’ve run across. I sent a question to the owner on the morning of November 22nd about the colors and if this was one that was repackaged. On the site it was not noted as such, so I was curious. As of the posting of this review she has not replied.

Leather & Lace is a matte black with pink glitter. The formula on this is a little odd. It’s thick and almost seems chunky and feels sticky. It’s hard to explain. It applies spotty, so less is more. Start out with very little and work the color up. The glitter is also really subtle in this, the black seemed too overwhelming.

Violent is a very soft violet. It’s a very light pastel color, not much sheen. It’s sort of familiar.

Secretive is a very soft pink with low sheen. This has almost an iridescent cast to it.

Galaxy is a matte black with purple glitter. It has the same formulation issues as Leather & Lace.

Glowstick is a lime green glitter powder. It’s very fine and smooth and I’m hoping I can figure out how to use it, I love this color.

Legwarmers is a really sweet lip gloss. It smells and tastes exactly like Bazooka Joe bubble gum, which I LOVED as a kid, however it’s not all that long lasting.

Conclusion

Would I order from Glamour Doll Eyes again? Not at this time.

Shipping is a little long for my tastes. I prefer companies who’s turn around is shorter. I realize she’s ONE PERSON, but if she DID carry stock I would imagine it would be easier to fill and process orders.

In the FAQ section of her site it states that all repacked colors are noted as such. I wasn’t able to find any designated with the ** denoting that.

I think some of her formulas need a little work.

That being said, I look forward to the changes she talks about in her video. When the site is updated to show which shadows are repackaged and which are original I will be much more inclined to try new shadows and purchase again.

ETA:

Vee replied on the evening of November 25th and she confirmed all of the colors from the Collection I ordered are repackaged except the black, which she blends herself.

Recently Beauty from the Earth admitted they sell straight repacked mica as well as custom blended s

Recently Beauty from the Earth admitted they sell straight repacked mica as well as custom blended shadows. In their honesty they promised to discontinue selling these Primary Pigments (much like AL is phasing out their Pure Hues) in favor of making exclusively custom blended colors. This disclosure, made by the owner, as well as the many favorable posts I’ve seen recently prompted me to place my own order.

Ordering

This past weekend Beauty from the Earth switched from their old website to a new one. I actually ordered some samples from the old site just a day or so before they switched. Unbeknown to me if I would have waited a day I would have been able to use a 20% off coupon.

They totally redid their image with a new logo and the site. It’s very sleek and professional. They have several new products listed that aren’t available yet, such as glosses and bath & body, so I expect the company is in the process of expanding.

It’s easy to navigate and the site is organized well, the cart is always visible on the top of the page. They have a wide range of shades and finishes, but I was really interested in seeing their mattes, so I primarily ordered those.

I ordered several samples as well as full sizes of:

10$ Pineapple

Paranoid (Matte)

Girl Next Door (Matte)

Cheeky (Matte)

Shipping

I ordered on November 16th and my order arrived on November 20th. I was very pleased they arrived so quickly.

Shipping is free for orders over 50$, my order was about half of that and shipping was only 4$, but using the coupon (BFTE20) it worked out to just about free anyway.

Packaging

They were packed in a bubble mailer wrapped with my invoice as well as a full sized shadow as a thank you. I don’t see the color of the free shadow from my order available on the site, so I wonder if they are sending discontinued colors as samples, but either way I found it generous.

The jars are standard round 5gram jars with a silver rim and clear lid.

Product / Colors

10$ Pineapple – This is a color I see a LOT of bloggers using, and while I don’t normally love yellow, this is an exception. It was the only non-matte shade I got. I can’t seem to get any picture I take of it to do it justice. It’s described as:

Low shimmer base of a cool yellow base, with gold, peach and pink micro glitter.

Paranoid – It’s described as a matte brown with red undertones. It reminds me maybe of cocoa.

Girl Next Door – While there is no color description on the site for this one, I purchased it on the swatch alone. I had thought it was more of a pink, but when it arrived I was a little disappointed to find out it was actually sort of a soft coraly orange, very much like terra cotta. It actually goes well with Paranoid, however it’s not really a color I would wear.

Cheeky - is a soft lilac color. I have a ton of purples, but not very many mattes, so this will be great in experimenting with textures and blending.

From left to right : 10$ Pineapple, Paranoid, Girl Next Door, Cheeky, Summer Days, and Twilight.

The last two were included as free thank yous.

They come packed full in 5gram jars. An empty 5 gram jar weighs about 7 grams, the full jars from BFTE weigh 9 grams giving you approximately 2 full grams of product.

It seemed like I spent a lot of time trying to blend these colors. I wondered if it was because of the primer I was using. So I started over without a primer and found the color wasn’t quite as dark (opaque, bright, sharp?) without the primer. It left me wondering what I wanted more, vibrant color or blended color. Eventually I decided to use the primer and just work on blending. It seems to be a common issue with any true matte shade that it’s going to be tricky to blend. While it wasn’t impossible, it might seem like a little more work, but worth it. You can see the mattes were actually tricky to swatch, as well.

The matte formula is soft, not chalky. The shimmery shades are vibrant and full of color, very well pigmented and blended on a long wearing base.

Conclusion

Would I order from Beauty from the Earth again? Yes. I already have.

They ship really quickly, which is a MAJOR plus. I’m still waiting on orderes I placed on the 1st from several other small companies.

While I don’t love their mattes, they are nice and I do like the other shades I got.

They have lots of extras coming to their site, and I’m interested to see what they will offer.

I was nothing less then impressed with the owners transparency over the issue of repacking. She was honest about it, apologized, and moved on. Very noble.

Originally posted on The Painted Ladies blog Phyrra has graciously given me permission to repost this wonderful article here. It’s well written and very concise. Thanks Phyrra!!

When I got into mineral makeup in April 2008, I didn’t know much about it, so I started to try and read everything I could find. Surprisingly, I didn’t find a lot of reviews (there were some) about mineral makeup companies. So I decided that I would start a blog and review everything I’ve tried. Through my trials, I’ve learned a lot. I’ve also learned a lot by emailing company owners and asking questions. They’ve shared many tips for me for discerning quality products, which I’m going to now share with you.

When there’s a company that you’re just dying to order from, before you hit that buy button, there are some things you should do.

1. Look at the products the company makes. Do they just make eye shadow? Or do they make other products? Unfortunately, a lot of companies that only make eye shadow may not have quality products or they may sell just repackaged products. Most companies that make quality mineral makeup sell at least eye shadow and blush. Normally they sell eye shadow, foundation and blush. Lipsticks and lip glosses are pretty much a labor of love for small, indie companies, so not everyone does them.

2. Look to see what they list for ingredients. If a company lists ingredients such as ’shimmer, pigment, frost,’ that’s not right. Shimmer, pigment, frost, are not FDA approved ingredients. You can see what is approved here.

Now, you can give the company the benefit of the doubt and email the owner. They may not know that they’re listing ingredients improperly. I know I’ve contacted a few companies who didn’t realize it. Once I spoke to them, they corrected their listings. So there’s no harm in asking.

If however, the owner gets defensive or hostile, you’ve got an answer right there, and I would avoid that company.

3. Learning about what sort of ingredients are acceptable in mineral makeup helps, too.

Eye Shadows
For eye shadows, you’ll want to see an ingredients list like the following:

Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), May contain: Iron Oxides (CI 77499, CI 77491, CI 77492), Ferric Ferrocyanide (CI 77510), Ferric Oxide (CI 77491), Tin Oxide (CI 77861), Tin Dioxide (CI 778161), Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Silica
(From Aromaleigh’s Gothic Lolita collection.)

Mica, Titanium Dioxide. May contain Tin Oxide, Silica, UltraMarine Blue, Hydrated Chromium Oxide Green, Iron Oxides, Chromium Green Oxide, ferric ferrocyanide, Ultramarines, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Boron Nitride, Bronze Powder, Copper Powder, Silicon Dioxide, Cetyl Dimethicone, Zinc, and Calcium Sodium Borosilicate.
(From Dreamworld Minerals.)

Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxide, Tin Oxide, Zinc Oxide.
(From Glamour Doll Eyes.)

Ingredients like zinc oxide, magnesium myristate, kaolin clay, coated mica, zinc stearatae, carnauba coated mica, silica etc should be in the list of ingredients because that helps an eye shadow to have lasting power and to blend.

It’s also possible to use some eye shadows as blushes if you want. Most mineral makeup eye colors are multipurpose for use on the cheeks. Some can be used on the lips but others are not lip safe.

Blushes
Mineral makeup blushes usually are very pigmented, so you can apply them sparingly to get a beautiful flush.
Blushes tend to look like the following:

Sericite Mica, Iron Oxides, Titanium Dioxide, Magnesium Stearate. May contain: Manganese Violet.
(From Beautiful Girl Minerals.)

mica, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, iron oxides, ultramarines
(From Buff’d Cosmetics.)

titanium dioxide, iron oxides, ultra marine pigments.
(From Cory Cosmetics, mica-free blend.)

Foundations
For foundations, you’ll want to see an ingredients list like the following:

Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, Iron Oxides
(This is from Meow’s Pampered Puss formula.)

Zinc Oxide, Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Kaolin, Magnesium Stearate, Silica
(From Fyrinnae’s Superpower Mineral Foundation.)

Titanium Dioxide, Mica, Zinc Oxide, Pure Silk Powder, Boron, Silica, Iron Oxides, Jojoba Oil (vegetable derived), Magnesium Myristate. May contain ultramarine blue.
(From Purely Cosmetic’s Skin Smoothing foundation.)

Lipsticks
If you’re looking at lip products, you want to see ingredients like the following:

Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Kernel Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil (and) Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil(soybean), Ozokerite, Microcrystalline Wax, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E).

May contain(depending on the shade): Tin Oxide, Tin Dioxide, Silica, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Palmitic Acid, Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, Iron Oxides, Manganese Violet, Carbon Black, Polyester-3, Blue 1, Yellow 5, Red 7, Red 21, Red 27, Red 28, Red 33, Red 40, Copper, Bronze, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate(mineral glitter), Polyethylene Terephthalate(glitter), Flavor
(From Morgana Minerals.)

Certified Organic Castor and Jojoba Oils, Avocado Oil, Organic Candelilla Wax, Cranberry Oil, Raspberry Oil, Passionfruit Oil, Carnuaba Wax. Also contains: Mica, Iron Oxides, Titanium Dioxide, FD&C color
(From Silk Naturals.)

Cocoa Butter, Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Sesame Oil, Castor Oil, Castor Wax, Candelilla Wax, Macadamia Nut Oil, Vitamin E. Pigment Ingredients: Mica; may contain Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Tin Oxide and Manganese Violet.
(From GeoGrafx Cosmetics.)

Ingredients I suggest avoiding:
Talc, Bismuth Oxychloride, pthalates and parahydroxybenzoate.

To me, talc is often a filler. Bismuth can cause itching, especially for sensitive skin. Pthalates are being phased out of most products in the USA.

Parahydroxybenzoate is also known as Ethylparaben, and it’s often used as a preservative. I’m somewhat on the fence about this one.

Ingredients that I suggest looking at to decide if you want them in your makeup or not:
parabens like butylparaben, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, and Propylparaben.
Some sites you can look at for more information are:
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-methylparaben.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paraben

4. If the company makes a claim that their foundation has an SPF, see how they word it. If they say ‘this offers great SPF protection,’ be leery. If they say that their product does have titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which offers barrier protection, but that they can’t indicate a specific level of SPF, that is fine. Companies cannot actually claim a specific SPF rating with the FDA without doing expensive testing. As of right now, the only mineral makeup company that I know of that can make a specific claim is Bare Escentuals. They paid a huge amount of money to get every single shade and every single formula that they offer tested. This is why only a very large company can do such testing. A small, indie company is just not likely to be able to afford it. So if you see one claiming the same thing as Bare Escentuals, be very wary.

5. Google the company name with the word reviews after it. See what people have to say. Now google with repackage after it. If it comes up, read what people have to say, and weigh this with the other information you find on that company. You can also google the name of the eye shadows, as some companies keep the same names for colors if they’re just selling repackaged colors. Sometimes, these companies even use the same stock photos for the colors along with the stock names. There’s a set of pretty colors called Pops/Gumballs that fall in this category.

6. Just because a color is repackaged doesn’t mean it’s necessarily bad. Many companies will list a repackaged color honestly and explain why they have it. Some companies have these colors due to customer request. Other companies like these unblended eye shadows because they’re pretty the way they are. If a company is honest about it, and you like it, definitely try it.

7. You can always check the Mineral Makeup Mutiny list. While they don’t list companies to avoid, they do list companies that are artisan and make their own products and honestly label their products. Some of the companies listed sell unblended or repackaged shades. However, all of the companies listed on this site you can buy from with confidence. You can also check out the list of companies that I’ve reviewed here.

Ordering I ordered from Orglamix on Etsy, which is easy to navigate and browse. Etsy is an amazing

Ordering

I ordered from Orglamix on Etsy, which is easy to navigate and browse. Etsy is an amazing place to shop and find hundred of amazing mineral makeup surprises. Orglamix sells a wide variety of products such as shadows, foundations, blushes, and brushes. I wanted to test them out (being as I’ve never purchased from them before) and only got a few shadows. They were offering a birthday sale for three full sized eyeshadow of my choice for 10$. Normally each shadow wound have been 3.99$. I actually jumped out of my comfort zone and ordered some tropical sort of cheery colors. Their color chart is full of brights, so it was hard to choose.

I ordered:

Eucalyptus

Citron

Pomegranate

Packaging

I placed my order on Etsy on November 10th and received it on Monday November 16. The post office claims it was delivered on the 14th, but the mailman personally handed it to me this morning. So much for DC#’s I guess. So the shipping was quick!

My order arrived in a large bubble mailer. Inside my shadows were bundled together in a cute black organza bag. I also found my invoice (why some people don’t send you one, I don’t know) with a thank you note and three odd petals. I still have a head cold but I assume they have some sort of perfume on them, sitting next to my cousin, Jessica, as I opened the envelope she could smell them.

Colors / Product

At first I was really confused about my order. While I got the colors I had wanted, I wasn’t sure I got the actual sized product I was supposed to. I got one large sized jar of Eucalyptus and tiny jars of Citron and Pomegranate.

I sent a quick convo to the Etsy shop saying I think I got sample sizes. They replied quickly and the conversation was very polite. The reply was that these were in fact her full sized products and the larger one was a Pro sized item she shipped because she didn’t have any of the regular sized Eucalyptus in stock.

According to the ad for the items I purchased :

All Orglamix products are packaged in clear jars with a sifter and sold by weight, not volume (so you get more product). Size: 1g (0.04oz) in a 3 gram jar. Roughly a 1/2 Tsp = 1/2 gram. Compare Orglamix to Bare Minerals: Size: 0.02 oz, $13. Orglamix offers 2x the product for roughly 1/8 the cost. Safe for eyes, lips, face and nails.

I realize that a 3 gram jar is smaller then what seems to be the industry standard 5. But when the sifter was removed there was shockingly little product in the little jar, which actually has a false bottom to it.

A normal 3gram jar weighs 5 actual grams with the sifter. The jars I was sent from Orglamix appear to be a 5 gram jars, but as I mentioned, it has a false bottom making it a 3gram jar. As I’ve previously posted a normal 5gram jar with a sifter weighs 7grams.

The full Orglamix jar with the product inside weighs 7grams.

The full jar.

Carefully removing the label and the product inside the empty Orglamix jars weighed 7grams.

Empty Jar

Weighing the removed product in a small baggies (the baggie is placed on the scale and zeroing it out to remove that weight before filling it) the product weighed 0grams. It wasn’t even enough for my scale to register it as a full gram.

The actual product.

I have sample bags from other companies that weigh 1gram.

The colors were very soft and pretty, but not quite as vibrant as the chart.

From left to right: Eucalyptus, Pomegranate, and Citron

Although they are pure mica they need to be applied with a base for best wear and to get the most out of their colors.

Conclusion

Would I buy from Orglamix again? Probably not.

The amount you get is tiny. I would have to buy the ‘Pro’ sized jar to get the amount I am most accustomed to on Etsy (such as from Mixology) and those are a tad too pricey for me at 10$.

The product is straight mica, when they mentioned it being ‘formulated without’ and then a list of items, I mistakenly assumed it was blended on a base. The label on the jar simply states ‘mica, may contain titanium dioxide‘ as an ingredients.

Is it possible that my scale just isn’t sensitive enough to have weighed the actual amount of product you receive from Orglamix? Entirely. However, it’s still what in my eyes would constitute a sample sized amount and not 1 full gram. In my opinion I’m paying 3.99$ for something I could easily get elsewhere for 1$ amount wise.

When I joined Monsanto five years ago, I had little notion of what I was getting myself into. I grew up in the St. Louis area, and the Monsanto name was well known in the community, but I would venture that most people still thought of Monsanto as a company that made carpet fibers, industrial chemicals and yes, even AstroTurf. However, thanks to my father who was an ag chemistry salesperson for many yers with a competing company, I knew Monsanto for what it is today – an agricultural business.

What I didn’t know was much about agriculture or science for that matter. I also didn’t know much about the corporate world, having spent the early part of my career in government and non-profit environments.

Breeding, biotechnology (GMOs), tillage, germplasm, traits, glyphosate (or glysophate as I called it for about two months)…..these were all foreign terms to me. I had to ask a lot of questions along the way of people with much more knowledge and experience. Luckily, my colleagues, farmers, and the ag industry as a whole were more than willing to share because they were passionate about the work they were doing and desperate to communicate with people about that work.

After only a few months of working here, I was ashamed that I did not know more about where my food comes from and how it is produced. I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to learn, and I’m looking forward to learning more as I read posts from my fellow bloggers.

What will I be writing about? I’ll be sharing some of the latest developments from Monsanto, giving context to some of the announcements and projects we’re working on behind the news headlines and articles you read. I’ll also try to answer your questions about why we do what we do. I’ll be relying on those more experienced and knowledgeable colleagues I mentioned earlier when I need help understanding a topic or issue. Over time, I hope they may join us here on the blog to talk directly with you.

I also lead our social media team here at Monsanto so you may see posts from time to time about how agriculture is using social media to connect with the public.
