“Perfectly Lonely”, John Mayer I mentioned another John Mayer song in my last musical ob

“Perfectly Lonely”, John Mayer
I mentioned another John Mayer song in my last musical obsessions post, but that was before Battle Studies officially came out! Mayer captures the delicious essence of single-ness in this song. It’s carefree, a bit humorous, and ends with the temporal realization of it all – when he’s ready, he’ll want to settle down. Out of all of the songs on the new CD, this one struck a chord with me (pardon the pun), and I’ve had it on repeat ever since. Cause I don’t belong to anyone, nobody belongs to me…

“Pursuit of Happiness”, Kid Cudi
Another song about marijuana? Not entirely. I prefer to address the youthful connotations and the search for happiness. If there’s one thing I really love about Kid Cudi, it’s his topic choice for his songs. EVERYONE is on the pursuit of happiness. The background music is fantastic – let the trippy guitar chords wash over you on those 4am mornings when you’re awake and want to think about life. I think you’ll appreciate it more then. p.s. the chorus is addictive.

“Beautiful Story” by Taylor Swift vs Akon ft Omarion (Ryson Remix)
I’ve never really been a fan of mash-ups until someone in my digital media class showed me Ryson Remixes. This kid knows how to mash songs. I never thought Akon and T.Swift could sound so good together! The songs transition seamlessly.

“I Could’ve Danced All Night”, Audrey Hepburn
Sigh. What a classic. I was reminded by watching Hollie Steel from Britain’s Got Talent. Her beautiful, darling rendition of the song prompted me to go back to the source: My Fair Lady. It reminds me of how you feel after prom, weddings, etc. Enjoy!

“Haven’t Met You Yet”, Michael Bublé
Oh Michael. Not only do you have an amazing voice, but you also will sing to us in a grocery store, or daydream about singing to us in a grocery store. I love his voice, which goes perfectly with your typical, bouncy, feel-good love song. See sample A below:

“Michael Jackson Melody”, Sam Tsui
As always, some AMAZING accapella to round off the list! Sam Tsui is one stuck up Ivy Leaguer (he goes to Yale). Since he’s too awesome to sing accapella in a group like a normal person, he made this song with 7 of none other than…himself. Yes, he’s singing all of the back-up positions a normal accapella group would have. You’ll enjoy his vocal range, which goes from Damn-that-sounds-exactly-like-Michael-Jackson to My-ears-are-experiencing-intense-pleasure.

After 11 weeks on top, Kings of Leon relinquish the #1 spot to Kelly Clarkson. “Already Gone

After 11 weeks on top, Kings of Leon relinquish the #1 spot to Kelly Clarkson. “Already Gone” is Kelly’s 2nd #1 on the Hot AC chart. Her last song to reach #1 was “Behind These Hazel Eyes” back in 2005. That song spent 5 weeks on top of the chart. Whether Kelly gets to spend that long on top depends on how much the chart slows down for the Holiday season and whether “Fireflies” can keep up its momentum. About 1000 spins separate the two songs (#1 and #7 this week), and “Fireflies” gained over 400 spins this week alone. It will be fun to watch. Kelly has had 4 #1s on the pop chart. To see her career on that chart, please visit

http://www2.uta.edu/hunt/charts/kclarkson.htm

Otherwise the top 10 songs have little movement, and no songs enter or exit the top 10. Moving into the top 20 this week are Kris Allen at #19 and Green River Ordinance at #20. An artist gets a new high peak on HAC this week: Michael Buble moves up to #23 with “Haven’t Met You Yet”. His previous high mark on the chart was at #24 with “Home”.

The biggest mover on this week’s chart is “Life After You” by Daughtry. In its second week on the chart, the song jumps 8 notches to #26. Other decent moves this week on the chart include “Whatcha Say” (38-34) and “Two Is Better than One” (40-35). Debuting on the chart this week are Carrie Underwood with “Cowboy Casanova” at #37 and Britney Spears’ “3″ at #39. It’s Carrie’s 4th hit and Britney’s 9th.

Happy Thanksgiving to all the readers out there!

My friend Bindu recently posted a question on her blog: “If your life were mixed tape, what so

My friend Bindu recently posted a question on her blog: “If your life were mixed tape, what songs would be on it?” I thought the question was a good one, and I’ve decided to bring you my own mixed tape. I’ll preface by saying that musically, it’s all over the map (but, I tend to be that way so it makes sense).

You Got It (The Right Stuff) – New Kids on the Block
I think I was seven years old when I discovered NKOTB, and why my mom let me listen to them I’ll never know. But, I do know that I was absolutely in love with Joey McIntyre and just sure that I was going to marry him. So, instead of You Got It, I should probably have one of Joey’s high-pitched crooners up here, such as Please Don’t Go Girl. And to add more weight as to why NKOTB is on this list, I saw them twice in concert in 2008 – once while standing in the rain at the Today Show and then when they came through DC on their tour. (Yes, I am crazy!)

Walkin’ After Midnight – Patsy Cline
My list just wouldn’t be complete without this song. As a child, whenever my cousin Rachelle and I would ride in my grandma’s car, Pasty Cline’s Greatest Hits album would have to be playing. For some reason, as little girls, Rachelle and I loved listening to this. We each had a favorite song. My grandma loved Crazy, Rachelle would sing out to Back in Baby’s Arms, and I would belt out Walkin’ After Midnight. A couple years ago I ended up buying this album on iTunes so I could recreate some childhood memories!

More Than a Feeling – Boston / Iron Man – Black Sabbath / Kryptonite – 3 Doors Down
Yes, I know there are three songs here, but they sort of go together. My junior year of high school, I met one of my good friends, Tiffany. She was definitely different than the rest of the girls at Stanton High School, and after awhile we became attached at the hip. Tiffany infused a little classic rock into my life. We used to cruise back and forth to Omaha in her HUGE 1984 Buick listening to More than a Feeling and Kryptonite with the windows rolled down, wind blowing in our hair. And how does Iron Man fit in? Well, we figured out the melody line on our saxaphones much to our band director’s (and probably everyone else’s) annoyance!

Iowa State Fight Song
This is kind of lame, but I really couldn’t think of any other song that represented my college years. While I may have had grand ideas on where I wanted to go to college, I’m so glad that I chose ISU. First off, it was just big enough for me to get lost in the crowd (something that never happens in a small town), and secondly, it was a life changing experience that helped shape who I am today. I discovered Jesus in college, made lifelong friends and solidified my life goals and pursuits. So, this one’s cheesy, but just go with it.

My Stupid Mouth – John Mayer
This song is on here for two reasons. One: Just like Mayer in this song, I have a tendency to stick my foot in my mouth, say things I don’t really mean, or just completely mess up what I say. This is why I went to print journalism rather than broadcast. It would be horrible! Two: I discovered John Mayer in college, and this song quickly became my favorite. I probably traumatized my friend Amy because everytime she got in my car this cd would be playing. Oddly, enough, six years later, John Mayer is still the cd in my car. Some things never change.

Breakaway – Kelly Clarkson
The first time I ever really listened to this song, I was immediately struck that it was all about me! Here’s a sample of the lyrics: “Grew up in a small town / And when the rain would fall down / I’d just stare out my window / Dreaming of what could be . . . And I’ll make a wish / Take a chance / Make a change / And breakaway.” As I moved away from Iowa on my own, first to Dallas and then on to DC, I felt that I made my own changes in life and did my own “breakaway.”

O Praise Him – David Crowder Band
Not long after I started attending Frontline at McLean Bible Church, David Crowder Band put this song out. I absolutely love this band; they are probably my favorite Christian group. And this song to me is what it’s all about, to just praise God and the joyous noise we will be giving up to God in heaven. I sometimes joke that I want David Crowder Band to have their own stage in heaven, because I’m going to be camped out right by them for eternity!

Say It Right – Nelly Furtado
This song isn’t so much about what Nelly is singing about, but more about where I was when I first discovered this song. I associate it with my mission trip to Romania, even though I heard the song in Budapest. We were on the tail end of the trip, our last night to be exact, and had to leave for the airport at 4 in the morning. So most of us decided that we would stay awake the entire night so we’d sleep on the long flight back to DC. Well, if this was your last night in Europe and you were going to be awake anyway, you might as well explore the city at night, right? A group of us ended up walking around the city the entire night. We made a pit stop at what we thought was a jazz cafe on the isalnd in the middle of the Danube River. Turns out it was a raving night club, and this song happened to be playing when we stopped and it just stuck with me. I’d probably rank this night up there as one of the most memorable times in my life!

Glory Revealed – Candi Pearson-Shelton
This song really spoke to me while I was in Burma. One morning I was outside doing my quiet time. Really, I was skimming through the book of Isaiah, when I came to chapter 40. Verses 3-5 struck me as what we were doing in Burma: A voice of one calling: “In the desert prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” Our main objective was prayer walking on that trip, essentially preparing the way for the Lord. Well, I soon realized that the CD our leaders had made for us had this song on it that is based on Isaiah 40. It was really fitting, and everytime I listen to it, I’m brought back to our time in the mountains of Burma, where we literally forged our own path for God.

Home – Michael Buble
This song is for all the times I’ve wanted to just pack my bags and jump on the next flight to Iowa. For as much as I love living in DC and wouldn’t trade it for the world, when I’m home in Iowa, my stress melts away and I can just relax. I probably sleep most of the time I’m home. While getting my master’s at Georgetown, I made plans to go home at the end of every semester. I went home more often in those two years than I ever had before.

Perfectly Lonely – John Mayer
Yes, of course John Mayer is on here twice. If I didn’t know that certain people would give me flack over it, I’m pretty sure all the songs could be John Mayer songs. Well, this on is off his new album that came out last week. And for those who know me well, you’d know the lyrics of this song sort of describe the self-imposed state of my heart right now. But don’t think it’s too depressing, the song ends on a hopeful note, which is where I’m headed as well!

So, I’m going to continue Bindu’s question – if you had a mixed tape of your life, what would be on it? And to answer Bindu’s other question – no I don’t have a theme to mine. I told you it would be random!

Lyrics:

I’m Not Surprised
Not Everything Lasts
I’ve Broken My Heart So Many Times,
I Stop Keeping Track.
Talk Myself In
I Talk Myself Out
I Get All Worked Up
And Then I Let Myself Down.

I Tried So Very Hard Not To Loose It
I Came Up With A Million Excuses
I Thought I Thought Of Every Possibility

And I Know Someday That It’ll All Turn Out
You’ll Make Me Work So We Can Work To Work It Out
And I Promise You Kid That I’ll Give So Much More Than I Get
I Just Haven’t Met You Yet

Mmmmm ….

I Might Have To Wait
I’ll Never Give Up
I Guess It’s Half Timing
And The Other Half’s Luck
Wherever You Are
Whenever It’s Right
You Come Out Of Nowhere And Into My Life

And I Know That We Can Be So Amazing
And Baby Your Love Is Gonna Change Me
And Now I Can See Every Possibility

Mmmmm ……

And Somehow I Know That It Will All Turn Out
And You’ll Make Me Work So We Can Work To Work It Out
And I Promise You Kid I’ll Give So Much More Than I Get
I Just Haven’t Met You Yet

They Say All’s Fair
And In Love And War
But I Won’t Need To Fight It
We’ll Get It Right
And We’ll Be United

And I Know That We Can Be So Amazing
And Being In Your Life Is Gonna Change Me
And Now I Can See Every Single Possibility

Mmmm …..

And Someday I Know It’ll All Turn Out
And I’ll Work To Work It Out
Promise You Kid I’ll Give More Than I Get
Than I Get Than I Get Than I Get

Oh You Know It’ll All Turn Out
And You’ll Make Me Work So We Can Work To Work It Out
And I Promise You Kid To Give So Much More Than I Get
Yeah I Just Haven’t Met You Yet

I Just Haven’t Met You Yet
Oh Promise You Kid

There are certain male musicians who while they seemingly have a unisex audience, it’s mainly women who are openly proud fans. Key examples: Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban.

Then there are those male musicians who seemingly have a feminine audience, yet they also earn the genuine respect of men who recognize their talent despite their charm. Key examples: Michael Buble and Jason Mraz. But the epitome of this category is none other than the 6’ 3”, tattoo-sleeved Connecticut native, John Mayer.

His most romantic songs are typically my least favorite- “Your Body is a Wonderland” and “Come Back to Bed”. What draws me most to his music is a quality found in his lesser hits like “83” and “Something’s Missing”. Half nostalgic, half philosophical.

In reviewing any genre of entertainment, I can’t say any one thing is the best. I can only say what is my personal favorite. Because my favorite is simply an opinion; I am not qualified to declare what is best- that would go beyond a matter of opinion.

That being said, my favorite John Mayer album is his 2003 Heavier Things. It features the hits “Bigger than My Body”, “Daughters”, and “Clarity” (“ah whoo-ew… ah whoo-ew”). Along with its less featured songs “New Deep”, “Home Life”, “Split Screen Sadness” and “Wheel”.

The cover of this album itself perfectly captures the style and direction of the music. It represents a simple sense of timelessness, yet at the same time somehow reminds of me of Eric Clapton and/or Sting between 1988 and 1993.

I say that to say this. John Mayer’s newest album, Battle Studies, is a hybrid of two of my favorite things of his: 1) The album Heavier Things and 2) his very much underappreciated song “I Don’t Trust Myself with Loving You” from his 2006 album Continuum.

Very bluesy: “Fell down on my knees, asked the Lord for mercy, said ‘help me if you please’” (“Crossroads”).

Very jazzy: “Who says I can’t get stoned?” (“Who Says”)

Very soft rock: “I’ve got a hammer and a heart of glass- I gotta know right now which walls to smash” (War of My Life).

I decided half-way through this decade that John Mayer is incapable of releasing an album that isn’t good. I stand by that. Battle Studies is completely up to par with all his other recordings. But just like how Dave Matthews Band will never be able to top their Crash album, in my mind John Mayer will never be able to top Heavier Things.

Actually I see Battle Studies as a direct sequel (yet not necessarily a continuation) of Heavier Things. So in other words, I love it.

A year ago I posted a review of my favorite albums of 2008, and in a prophetic moment, I praised the then unknown song “People are Crazy” by Billy Currington. A few months later it was released as a single and went to #1.

Therefore, I will predict the soon-to-be hits from Battle Studies. The most obvious is the industrial-infused groovy tune “Assassins”. John has never sounded more like an African-American lead singer of an alternative rock band than he does in this song. Maybe it’s because this song has so many Michael Jackson qualities about it.

Like it was written with “Smooth Criminal”, “Dirty Diana” and “Give in to Me” in mind: “I work in the dead of night when the roads are quiet and no one is around… I’m an assassin and I had a job to do… Little did I know that girl was an assassin too.”

Another song destined to be a radio favorite is “Half of My Heart”. Perfect catchy melody. Perfect opening line: “I was born in the arms of imaginary friends.” Perfect choice of a female vocalist to do a song with: Taylor Swift.

The only downfall is that there’s not enough Taylor Swift in this song. She just does background vocals towards the end. Every time I hear it, I keep hoping the song has magically changed since the last time I heard it and that the song has become a true duet like the immaculately crafted “Lucky I’m in Love” by Jason Mraz with Colbie Caillat. Great song though: “Half of my heart is a shotgun wedding to a bride with a paper ring.”

Often when a musician or actor becomes a superstar, showing up in the tabloid magazines, the authenticity of their art suffers. Despite dating Jennifer Anniston and Jessica Simpson (to name a few) and being a Twitter slut, his art hasn’t suffered (just his personal reputation). He’s still got the talent. Just as much as ever. Going beyond the rut of “the same three chords” compositions and “I miss you baby” lyrics.

And not that this takes away from his music at all, but this lifestyle definitely shows up in his song content. Like in “Perfectly Lonely”- “Had a little love but I spread it thin. Falling in her arms and out again. Made a bad name for my game ‘round town.” It’s also evident in the future hit which will inevitably be featured on several romantic comedy soundtracks, “Heartbreak Warfare”.

Gone is the charming, mysterious John Mayer from the beginning of the decade. Gone is the gentleman. Apathy and aimlessness are starting to show up in his attitude and lyrics. I don’t like his music any less because of it. But I do recognize the change.

Though this may actually be hurting him with his current single, “Who Says”, which is his lowest charting single, breaking his string of 5 consecutive Top 10 singles. This song much departs from his former classy charm, containing douchebagery lyrics like this: “Call up a girl I used to know, fake love for an hour or so” and “I don’t remember you looking any better. Then again I don’t remember you”.

Not to mention the song’s constant references to marijuana use. (Around 90% of marijuana users are male, according to Pot Planet, a book written by a “marijuana journalist”.) Like a Playstation 3 or a Hardee’s Thickburger, pot is a female repellant.

John Mayer is suffering from what I call “King Solomon Syndrome”. King Solomon had it all: Extreme wealth, fame, and wisdom. And 700 wives. And 300 concubines (sex slaves). But by the end of his life when he wrote the book of Ecclesiastes, he said it was all meaningless. None of it made him happy.

At least at an early age, John Mayer recognizes something’s missing.

My life seems to be in a constant state of tumultuous highs and bottomless lows, up and down, hot and cold… There’s never a slight problem it’s always an avalanche. The last 28 hours have been a prime example of that.

I was laid off 3 months ago from a job I loved. I filed for unemployment, was accepted and have been very actively looking for a job ever since. Until yesterday. Yesterday I received a notice from unemployment that my benefits are terminated, and unless I appeal, I will have to pay back all benefits because my employer is claiming that I quit.

Last evening was a frantic search for any retail stores that might be hiring (note: I detest retail) and plastering my resume on virtual bulliton boards everywhere. After 3 hours of sleep I got up and scheduled an appointment with a temp agency, continuing my search and phone calls until I had to head into town. As I was pulling into a parking space at the temp agency my phone rang, someone calling to say they had my received my resume. When I found out they were only about 2 blocks away I invited myself over for an interview (well, you know what I mean, “Hey, would you like to meet to interview me as soon as I’m done here?”). They loved me. The two people I interviewed with said that I was just what they were looking for, they asked for my references and said I’d be hearing from them very shortly.

It’s a new dawn
It’s a new day
It’s a new life
For me
And I’m feeling good

I’m going through a Michael Bublé phase. I call it, every day with Michael Bublé. He makes for good cooking music, study music, commuting tunes, house cleaning tunes.. The only time I stray from my Bublé is with my running music. Sorry, but you just can’t mess with this girl’s rhythm. I need a beat that can carry me, push me, and keep up with me on a hard run. Today I really wasn’t feeling a long, or even average run. After yesterday’s 12-miler I really just wanted to keep the muscles from stiffening up. Plus its been said that you recover faster if you don’t take the day after a long run off. So I went to the gym for a light jog. It was nice. I brought my Runner’s World magazine along, but really I was just absorbed in my music. How did we ever get along before ipods? I remember taking my CD discman to the gym. It would skip every time my foot struck the belt. How annoying. Or how about the good old tape deck? Aaah, technology is spoiling me. However, the downer hit me when only 20 minutes into my exercise-coma my ipod froze.. again!! I want to be upset, but all I can think is “serves me right for buying a refurbished ipod off Amazon”. But seriously. Shouldn’t I get more than 4 months out of an ipod I spent $100(ish) on? I now own three and the one that almost works perfectly is my first generation ipod. Ggrr…

I’m debating whether I should get a new one or switch to something cheaper like a Shuffle. First I think I’ll take it to an Apple store and see if they can do anything for me. It’s beginning to look like an Apple graveyard in my glovebox.

I know how excited I get to run with a new playlist so I thought I’d share some of my top faves right now. Hopefully if they’re new to you they’ll help you get excited about your next run.

Meet Me Halfway– Black Eyed Peas
Empire State of Mind– JayZ and Alicia Keys
Got Whatever It Is– Zac Brown Band
Happy– Natasha Bedingfield
Don’t Take It Personal– Monica
Enough Crying– Mary J. Blige
If I Never See Your Face Again– Maroon 5
Summer Love– Justin Timberlake

To name just a few.. What I’m about to say is almost too nerdy to admit, but I have playlists named: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday… all through the week. Isn’t that lame! lol. I have other playlists tooo..I just seem to forget which one I already played recently and then I get bored with the same mixes. SO, I also have running playlists titled: Rainy Day Jams, Beezy’s Old School (from burning my roommates CDs), Girly Hits. You get the idea

So in other news.. lunch was so good today! Mostly because I had a whole hour to eat after my quickie run. I came home from the gym (and yes I totally pampered myself my taking 10 minutes to unwind in the sauna). I assembled a sandwich on toasted whole-wheat bread. fixins included last nights salmon, spinach, tomato, onion and alvocado. Then I cut a sweet potato into strips, drizzled EVOO over them and broiled for 9 minutes. Tadaa: fries! All that with a side of crisp green beans and I was good to go.

Bread really isn’t a staple in my diet. I probably buy a loaf once every couple months. This week I really am craving sandwiches though so be prepared. I plan on jazzing up a few classics.. a twist on turkey perhaps. Only 4 days until its time to get creative with leftovers!

And a meal just isn’t complete without a little sweet so I grabbed a Honeycrisp apple to go.

(Sorry for the bright photo. My camera and I have been fighting today.)

After a full and satisfying meal, with plenty of time to relax at home for a bit, I headed off to my afternoon cooking lab. We made gluten balls, which I saw no need to photograph since they aren’t exactly edible. The idea was to mix flour and water into a dough, soak in cold water and watch it shrink as the gluten is lost in water. It was kinda cool to see the different flours and their varying gluten content, but you want to see the good stuff. That’s why I have pics from the popovers I made! I’ ve never even heard of popovers. They’re this nifty pastry that puffs up as it bakes. When they came out of the oven they were huge, and full of air. Perfect for honey, jam, fruit.

I know food isn’t “cute” but I just can’t help it, these are “cute” little puffs!!

All in all it was a really nice Monday. I was proud to check everything off on my study/school agenda, I got a workout in (which always makes me feel good), and I even had time left over to relax. That’s right, I’m currently blogging with a glass of cab while watching Anthony Bordain’s No Reservations. Don’t you love that show!? He is so…raw. Not to mention he gets to sample the best of all food from around the world. It’s a tough job. What I wouldn’t do to trade him places. Alright, that’s enough already, goooooodnight!

Do you prefer to listen to music when you run?
What’s on your favorite playlist?
What do you do with turkey leftovers?

I like swing music. I like the jazz of it and I like the way that the voice comes second to the deli

I like swing music. I like the jazz of it and I like the way that the voice comes second to the delivery. I like the arrogance, I like the act and I like the charm but boy do I dislike Bublé doing it. He doesn’t seem to smile and when he does he just seems smarmy. For so long I felt that he lacked the charisma to be suave, that he was the kind of guy who would hit on his mate’s new girlfriend right in front of him and then just say ’survival of the fittest’ as he tapped his mate on the shoulder and led his ‘girlfriend’ out of the bar. He seemed to be a wanker.

But this was only when he sang swing. When I first heard ‘Home’ I was annoyed to find myself enjoying it, but it was a ballad and I always assume that most singers of any genre could sing a ballad and make it sound authentic. And then my opinion of him changed dramatically one Saturday evening a few weeks back when he was a mentor on ‘X Factor’ and appeared both humble and contented. It would appear that he had fallen in love with the mate’s girlfriend that he had stolen and was no longer trying so hard.

So anyway, ‘Haven’t Met You Yet’. A few mornings after his ‘X Factor’ appearance I happened to come upon the video on VH1 before work and was completely blown away by it. Firstly the leading lady (his real life girlfriend) is simply beautiful and maybe it was she that kept me watching initially, but then I started falling for the song. Like a Limbeck or Jack’s Mannequin song, it is simple and eloquent and upbeat and poppy and uplifting. The video is like a mix of The Mavericks’ ‘Dance The Night Away‘ and that dance sequence from ‘500 Days of Summer’ and is equally as impossible to sit through without smiling.

So, to summarise, Bublé should stick to pop. But does he on his new album? No, instead he opts for terrible swing covers of great songs. It is even more disappointing to see him taking this route now when I know that he is capable of so much more but, for now, I will just content myself with knowing that I no longer think he’s a prize prick. It seems its babysteps with Bublé.

- Now that I’m on Twitter (@ConstantLearnin), I’m getting to see what I’ve been missing out on. While there are things about Twitter that drive me nutty (do I need to know that you’re watching “King of Queens”?), when used in a good context, it is a great way for an up-and-coming artist to build buzz for themselves. Courtesy of @PopMuse, here’s a sample of a new track from Chris that must be a result of this studio marathon that he’s been tweeting about at @ImChrisRich.

In searching for more info on this, I also came across an interview and free download that he did for *cough*Wal-Mart*choke*. “Floating Off the Ground” definitely fits into the current pop landscape, although trying to break through without a major label behind you can be tough. Just ask Elliot Yamin about that one. I’ve listened to the track about 10 times over the past two days, and it has me intrigued about the rest of his long-delayed new record, which is now supposed to be released in 2010. Get your guilt-free download of the song here (signup necessary to download). You can also check out the tune in the video posted below. I read somewhere that this is his new single, but I can’t believe that he would be giving away a single that he actually hopes gets him some chart action.

- One song that is showing a little bit of legs and has slowly grown on me is Michael Buble’s “Haven’t Met You Yet”, which has already been a top 5 hit in the UK. “Haven’t” is bulleted at #57 on the Hot 100, along with being top 5 at Adult Contemporary and top 30 on the Adult Top 40 chart. While it’s been pushed by appearances on Dancing with the Stars and Oprah, the song is a solid straight-ahead pop song without any gimmicks that you just don’t hear on the radio all that much, and deserves to be a hit.

Having said all of this, his record company has already announced that they are planning a re-issue of Crazy Love, which was only released 7 weeks ago. While I am glad that the record company is behind him, this re-issue craze is just getting out of hand. Here’s hoping that Lady GaGa is able to show the industry next week that a brand-new album is a better value to the consumer than just the same 10 tracks with a few new ones thrown in for good measure.

- I am pretty thrilled that after 19 months on the charts, Lady Antebellum is getting their moment to shine on the larger pop stage. Following their triumph at the Country Music Awards on the 11th, their self-titled debut bounds back up the Billboard 200 to #11, and their current single “Need You Now”, from the album of the same name due January 26th, leaps all the way up to #5 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the Country singles chart.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, the members of Lady Antebellum have some serious music business roots. Hillary Scott is the daughter of Linda Davis, who is most well-known from her duet with Reba McEntire on the original version of “Does He Love You”, and Charles Kelley is the brother of pop singer Josh Kelley. In fact, Josh actually helped the band out early on by letting them crash at his place and use his recording equipment as they were pursuing a recording contract. “Need You Now” is only their fourth single, but it is already their second Country #1. Look for them to partake in some Sugarland-like domination over the next few years.

Well last night I slept for more than two consecutive hours! Miracle of all miracles it happened. I was very apprehensive going to bed, but, I did, and I slept good for about 3 hours, until I saw the sun. I laid in bed for a few minutes and the phone rang. It was a wonderful “wake up call” and those are my favorites.

This morning I am feeling much better than I did yesterday. I have a load of things to do before our trip and I need to buckle down and get some things accomplished. Since I want to keep this feeling good mood, I am going to keep on some upbeat music, including but not limited to Nina Simone’s Feeling Good.

Michael Buble did this song and that is the version you hear played most often. I first heard Nina’s version about ten years ago and I really just fell into sync with it. Michael’s version is ok, but when I need some really good feeling good vibes, I go for Nina.

Hope you like it as much as I do:

In recent weeks the American music industry has been celebrating the “Oprah Effect” on music sales, appearances on Oprah Winfrey’s celebrity talk show resulting in a No.1 album for Michael Buble and Barbra Streisand’s first US No.1 in 12 years. Whitney Houston’s turn on the show sparking a 77% increase in sales for her comeback album ‘I Look to You.’ The music industry had even coined a new catch-phrase, ‘Television is the new radio” and I’m sure they were carefully looking at their release schedules for “Oprah friendly” artists and planning to queue up for Oprah patronage and a shot at that 6.2 million viewership.

As soon as the ‘Oprah Effect’ revealed itself, it’s over. Oprah has pulled the plug. The plug has a long chain thankfully. This week Winfrey advised her staff that the final show will go to air Sept. 9, 2011 — 25 years after the talk show’s debut. Plenty of time for plenty more record sales – if you catch Oprah’s eye and ear. Rap stars and celebrity girlfriend beaters need not apply. She’s already declared war on them.

Michael Buble defends our beloved Brit:

“You’d think she killed someone. As an artist, and a human being, some of what has been written about her is so nasty. OK, she lip-syncs her show, people know that, they make the decision if they want to go and see her do that.“

AMEN!!!

Fellow blogger and my good friend Joanna Burns(who I lovingly refer to as JB) and I often find ourse

Fellow blogger and my good friend Joanna Burns(who I lovingly refer to as JB) and I often find ourselves at a local coffee joint till the wee hours of the am chatting about all kinds of wonderfully random topics. Just last week, in the course of a few short hours we contemplated that when Michael Jackson woke up in the morning would he actually debate which metallic pants to wear, why she and I should be stand up comedians-we think we are hilarious, and by the end JB had volunteered to be my life coach. I also mentioned that I though Seth MacFarlane was totally crush worthy. JB automatically got one of those silly JB grins on her face and proceeded to point out to be that I have successfully found a type of guy I am particularly attracted to. They are usually tall and dark…and well pretty much all look the same. I swore up and down that she was making things up and then I looked at the cold hard truth. Michael Buble, Ben Affleck, even that Ryan guy from Paranormal State! This has nothing to do with today’s actual post, but I know it will make JB smile….

As stated above I am a huge Michael Buble fan and today while I was jamming to his latest diddy, “I Just Haven’t Met You Yet”. I realized that though I have a crappy love life I am not as worse off as Buble. One of the hits off his last album was called “Everything”. He wrote that about Emily Blunt his then girlfriend. The song was full of clever little things that she is to him. My personal fave is when he sings, “You’re a swimming pool on an August day.” His menthol cool voice makes me melt and I could go on and on about the Buble and how dreamy he is, but I’ll just get on to the point. His everything…Emily Blunt is now engaged to John Krasinski better know as Jim Halpert. That’s a big woops on his part. I tend to develop crushes on gentlemen that I inevitably have to see almost everyday, and while that can be terrible awkward, nothing is worse than having the engagement of your ex in magazines and on TV being jammed down your throat every second. When a normal persons ex eventually moves on Facebook or friends may keep you up on a few minor details of gossip. Poor Michael Buble has almost every type of media to keep his updated on the engagement. Mike dusted himself off and wrote a new song called “I Just Haven’t Met You Yet.” Good save kiddo!

So folks, the moral of the story is when ever you are feeling a little sad about your love life, always remember, you could be Buble.
