Finally saw Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I blogged about it even before seeing it because I was so excited. The actually result was phenomenal. I was blown away. Every detail from the music and lighting to the avant-garde hair on the mannequins was flawless. I could go everyday.

I feel like my 20th Century Style and Design professor Michael Casey produced this exhibit himself. It felt like a giant review of the course. I am happy that I was knowledgeable going into it, because many famous garments from iconic fashion photos are not displayed with the image. The exhibit is great if you are not familiar with fashion history, but is extraordinary if you are.

Above is a clip from the film Qui êtes-vous, Polly Maggoo?. This clip is featured in the exhibit when talking about the models and fashion of the 1960’s. At 4:12 Donyale Luna (one of my favorite models of all time) is seen and she looks impeccable. She took my breath away. The metal garments in the film are displayed at the museum.

Overall, I would highly recommend this exhibit. Not only does it show of classic garments from the past and present, but it profiles the canvas’. The models. You might me surprised at how much you already know.

Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion is running from May 6, 2009–August 9, 2009 in the Tisch Galleries on the 2nd floor of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Hurry!

I have a memory–a surprisingly distinct one, considering the circumstances–I was about nineteen, a sophomore in college, hanging out at a friend’s house, listening to records and going through his books. He had a large red book, a Che Guevara reader that I recognized not by the name (which I’d never heard pronounced) but rather by the iconic image of the Argentine Marxist revolutionary. Of course, I didn’t know that Che was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary at the time–I just knew the image. “Is this any good?” I asked my friend, thumbing through the thick, stiff volume. “No idea,” he replied. “Who is this guy, anyway?” My friend smiled at me — “You don’t know who Che Guevara is? Neither do I.” This admission speaks volumes to Che’s legacy, a legacy of image over substance, form over idea, iconography over doctrine–a legacy thoroughly and playfully covered in Michael Casey’s intriguing new study, Che’s Afterlife.

Guerrillero Heroico -- Alberto Korda

Casey’s book begins in the back of a tuk tuk in Bangkok, where the author sees two images juxtaposed: the iconic photograph of Che by Alberto Korda next to a picture of Rambo–the Communist revolutionary and the all-American defender of the capitalist way of life. In Che’s Life, Casey follows this strange juxtaposition across the globe, from the moment Korda captures the image while on assignment recording Jean Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir’s 1960 trip to Cuba, to the image’s rallying explosion across the Western world, to its modern implications in Chavez’s Venezuela and its infamy among Cuban Republicans in Miami. The global ride is packed with fascinating historical characters, artists, and writers, but at its heart is the central paradox of how a Communist firebrand became a capitalist brand. “It’s impossible to overlook the irony,” Casey writes, “the commoditization of an anticapitalist rebel who opposed all that his hyper-commercialized image now represents.”

Che’s Afterlife is not so much another Che Guevara biography as it is an exploration of the power of imagery and media in a global world. Casey works from sources like Andy Warhol and Susan Sontag, along with contemporary political and economic analysts to explore how and why the “the Korda image remains a powerful indicator of rebellion and resistance.” I saw myself in the book time and again, not in any of the political ideologies, but rather as one of the many “young Americans [who] know [Che] only as a T-shirt logo.” Casey’s study is well-researched, well-written, and lots of fun, a book more at home under the cultural studies rubric than biography or history. Recommended.

Che’s Afterlife: The Legacy of an Image by Michael Casey is available April 7th, 2009 from Vintage.

“The rules of marketing have changed. Do libraries know that?

Corporate PR-types used to control the message. Sitting behind a desk, they’d write a carefully crafted press release and then send it off to newspapers and upload it to their web site. The attention the company got might barely justify the salary of the PR professional.

Today’s world is fundamentally different. Neither news nor brand identity are controlled through press releases or carefully choreographed newspaper articles. Brands are molded and shaped by the audience—and the audience is everyone. People talk. And people listen.

Social tools, social media, and social engagement are the norms for many large advertisers that have populated sites like Facebook and Twitter with brand-focused pages and interactive techniques. Are you following your favorite brand? “

It is written from a monks perspective to monastics so there is some contexting to be done to make it relevant to our context.

I picked up in the group at Chapter 9 titled Generativiy and was very impressed with the content and how it seemed fitting to some things going on in the world around me.

Generativity can be defined as relating to the ability to create or reproduce. The question becomes how do we keep our vision/ministry/movement continually growing and reproducing?

He lists 3 Stages in the emergence of generativity

1) Productive - a person joins in the work achieving an acceptable result that approximates the norm.

2) Being Creative – allowing for self-expression, the work is done allowing for individual flair which can be a source of great joy and satisfaction in as far the “self” is not the chaotic, individualistic self of everyday experience but the deeper self that comes to the surface after years of ascetical practice (we call it spiritual growth and maturity).

3) Generativity. Comes from self-denial in the form of self-transcendence that leads to this final stage.

“Generativity is not a riot of individualistic self-expression, but a stepping aside so that the charism and the tradition that I have internalized may find expression through what I do. True generativity is a matter of transmitting the life I have received and made my own to the next generation. What I give is something truly my own, and yet it is larger that I.”

What I see in many church movements is a sticking point at stage 1. Casey develops a point about mentoring vs nurturing. Mentoring is more vertical (hierarchical) and nurturing would be vertical (peer).

“Necessary mentorship has a limited life and, if it is faithful to it’s purpose, must come to an end. Nurturing, however, because it is a purer function of love, goes on forever. Handing on a tradition in a way that transcends one’s own embodiment of it is a very self-sacrificing task that necessarily involves a renunciation of control. It involves not only bringing others to a par with myself, but encouraging them to surpass me, to become better than I in doing what I do well. Nurturance is a road to redundancy. Far from being a way to create a personal empire, it is the willingness to step aside so that others may develop their talents and help to redefine the community’s future in a manner that goes beyond my particular vision.”

Here is where I am coming from in my posting this – when we look at the charism and tradition of Benedictine Spirituality we have to acknowledge the fact the Rule of Benedict has been unchanged since it was written in the late 5th century. Why has this monastic movement endured pretty much intact govered by such a tiny rule. Looking at that question should help us understand why our movements over the centuries ended up falling into a negative ‘tradition’ and ultimately death within a few generations. It seems Casey is suggesting it is Generativity.

One of the cool things in looking at Benedictine History is seeing that every monastery was adapt to meet the needs of the community that they were around. Whether it was establishing schools, hospitals, gardens and orchards, etc it didn’t matter. The distinctive of the Benedictines wasn’t and isn’t method of ministry to the exclusion of all else, but rather what was necessary and needful in the context of their giftings and community around them. The distinctive was the common bond they all shared in the principles of ministry contained in the Rule which gave them a common bond, kinship, koinonia, etc which allowed them continual recieve fresh vision and continual renewal.

Maybe there is something here for us to learn from.

Last week my colleague, Lori, called me for 2 reasons. First, she’d read my post about creating Free Use Photos and was intrigued by the idea. Second, in the process of looking into ”Free Use” a bit more, she’d found a group who aim to do just the opposite by making flickr images exclusive, basically inaccessible legally without obtaining specific (paid) rights. [While searching just now, I see that one of the group's administrators has changed the very formal and hard-edge statement that was listed last week which was essentially language that spoke of image-poachers and keeping images from free use. The statement now is more about offering "useful information for photographers..."].

Lori put forth the challenge to expand my one “Free Use Photos” set into a flickr group. Yes! Within a few hours the Free Use Group was set up, and has grown in the past couple of days to have over 30 members and 4 administrators.

You can be a part of the Free Use Movement, too, and join the Free Use Group.

Part 2, Scene 2

This morning I received a call from the FBI. I’m not making this up. It was a follow-up from the photo-taking-spree I conducted during Computers in Libraries in DC. I explained (again) why one would want to take photos of signs and buildings and such to use in presentations and on blogs. I explained about “Creative Commons” that I had just presented at the conference earlier that morning with Helene Blowers and that I’d posted the images on flickr in a set called “Free Use Photos.” When the interviewer asked me what this flickr thing was and how was it spelled, I resisted the urge to say “well, it’s sort of like The Google.” This “interview” went on for about 10+ minutes. How does one answer questions like “how many pictures did you take of that building?” Which one is “that building?” “Why would you take a picture of a water outlet?” Well, it was interesting and perhaps useful to someone who wants to portray the idea of “letting go of resources.” I have a better question(s): Why did I have to have this conversation in the first place, and does this gentleman have to call every tourist in D.C. who snaps a shot of their reflection in a window or a fire hydrant or an interesting doorway?

I’ll say it again: the “0″ in 2.0 should not have to be a hoop (as in “jump through this hoop before you have access”).

What if everyone received the same amount of heat by pulling off interesting images and using them in presentations or posts? Eeak! Thinking about the types of images that I usually use (or see) in presentations, they are generally images that capture a thought or a certain idea in a sharp way . I tend to use images of signs, angles, odd objects. Wait! I also take pictures like that (or at least try with my point and snap digital camera). While at the Computers in Libraries Conference in Washington, DC last week I thought, hmmm–I could share some of my own images and take even more, put them on my flickr account in a set and allow anyone to use them, no permission needed. After lunch I started doing just that. Snapping away images of signs, benches, buildings. Then I was stopped by the military and asked why I was taking so many pictures of buildings, signs, benches…you get where this is going. After some explaining, I went back to my hotel room and downloaded pictures I think could serve presenters and bloggers well. Not the most polished, but you’re welcome to use them! And please do. Free is good, so snap up some of these Free Use Photos. I’ve added more since DC and will continue.
It’s been a whirlwind of discussion, dreaming and doing these past couple of days at CIL. Helene & I lead off the Innovation Track this morning with our presentation ‘Innovation Starts with “I”.’ Great turn out, input and questions from the group.

Ricky seems to have a bit of a cold, and hasn’t been sleeping very well. However he seemed OK this morning, ate his breakfast and so on, but then in the car on the way to school I glanced over my shoulder at him (he was unusually quiet) and he looked so unwell! I got them to take his temperature when we got to school and it was normal, so he is there for now, and seems OK, I’ve just told them to call me if he feels unwell.

Last night, me, Marty, Brian and Dad went to the Buck’s Head in Dundrum for a gorgeous slap up dinner to celebrate my Dad’s birthday. The food was lovely as always. I had chowder followed by fillet steak, and then me and Dad shared two puds, a creme brulee and something involving hazelnuts, but I forget what they called it! It was a very pleasant evening and nice to get some family time, just the four of us.

We also gave Dad his birthday present- a bog oak sculpture of a swan. I think he really liked it. It’s a beautiful thing! Here is a picture, but it doesn’t do it justice. It comes from the workshop of Michael Casey in Westmeath. Dad is a big fan, he and Mum had already bought a heron sculpture and one of a swallow.

On Saturday coming, we’re taking Dad and some friends and family out to the Cuan restaurant in Strangford, again for Dad’s birthday. I am looking forward to that! They have been very helpful in all the preparations and the food is always good there. It’s the friendly service that really makes it though.

Maybe I should start doing reviews, lol!

Utan vision, ingen strategi. Utan strategi, ingen framtid. (Från Plinius-bloggen: “the libraries seem to lack defined survival strategies“)

—————————————————————————————-

“the library of 20 years ago was nothing like the library of today, and will be nothing like the library of five years from now. They’re changing, and we just don’t know what they’re becoming.”

Library 2.0 is user-centric. It is a shift in our focus from having libraries decide what is best for users to letting users decide what they want, how they want to get it, and how we can best serve them. Are we doing enough to find out what our users want? It is imperative that we do the research before we throw programs and initiatives at them. Otherwise, we’re the one deciding what our users want and need – a concept that is decidedly not Library 2.0.

Library 2.0 is constant change and evaluation. Once we’ve decided to implement a new service or program, we must continually revisit and evaluate it. Are we asking our users not only if they like it, but also how it can be improved to better serve them? Are we involving staff at all levels in the creation and evaluation process?

Library 2.0 is not just about technology. No matter how much this is said, technology continues to be a leading topic of discussion. We should all be grateful for the doors to our users opened by new technologies. However, we must remember that while technology can be a tool to better serve our users, it is not the final answer to all of our problems.

Library 2.0 is political. Politics tends to be a dirty word, but we absolutely must consider it. Politics, within both our organizations and communities, plays an unavoidable and undeniably important role in our path to better serving our users. We have to get not only our staff and administration on board – we also have to get our library boards, community leaders, and users on board as well. And the best way to do that is to talk to them – let them know that we all share a common goal of providing access to all kinds of information.

Bella base per una riflessione collettiva…
