Happy Thanksgiving!

As long as I can remember, the Macy’s Parade has been a big part of my holiday morning.  The floats, the marching bands, and the balloons — Snoopy is still my favorite — were the sights and sounds that woke me up and provided the soundtrack for our family’s holiday preparations.

Now that I live in Manhattan’s Upper West Side — one block from the parade route and just around the corner from the Museum of Natural History where they inflate the balloons — the Macy’s Parade has gone from television spectacle to neighborhood block party.

From mid-day Wednesday until Thursday afternoon, throngs of people — including a celebrity or two — invade my block to witness the festivities.

My favorite Turkey Day celebrity encounter to date?

On my second year in New York, Rory and I took an early walk in Central Park on Thanksgiving — but not quite early enough, as it turned out.  We got ‘caught’ on the park side of Central Park West in the gathering crowd, and I couldn’t cross the street without police escort.

As I stood there waiting, Rory in my arms so he wouldn’t get trampled, a boy’s hand reached over to pet him on the head.

“Your dog is cute,” his quiet voice said.

As I turned to say thank you, I realized the hand and voice belonged to Michael Cera of “Arrested Development,” “Superbad,” and “Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist.”

He and I chatted for a few moments about typical dog topics (breed, age, name) until his mom told him it was time to meet the producer from NBC.  He never introduced himself, and I never acknowledged who he was.

We were just two people hanging out, talking puppy dogs, at the Turkey Day block party in the ‘hood.

This is pretty much the same as the first trailer.  And I’m excited in the same half-hearted way.  I just miss Arrested Development so much that any movie with actors from the show gets me excited.

This trailer reveals a few more actors, Steve Buscemi, and Justin Long.  Neither of these actors interest me (I wonder if anyone gets excited about a Steve Buscemi movie, hmm).  They do give Zach Galifianakis more scenes, that’s always a good thing.  Mr Galifianakis makes me happy.  I love to see how far he came so quickly.

The second trailer for Youth In Revolt, the new Michael Cera meets Fight Club flick, has been released today. This movie looks great. With Cera finally straying away with something other than his normal typecasted roles, this film looks like a turn to Cera’s career to hopefully better things than Year One.

While his trailer trash parents teeter on the edge of divorce, 14-year-old Nick sets his sights on dream girl Sheeni Saunders, hoping that she’ll be the one to take away his virginity.

Paper Heart is 2009 American film starring Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera as fictionalized versions of themselves based on their rumored relationship.

This was a delightful film about love. Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera play fictionalized versions of themselves in this movie that the filmmakers call a “hybrid documentary”, describing how it blends fiction and non-fiction. Charlyne talks with friends, strangers, scientists, bikers, romance novelists, and children. They each offer diverse views on modern romance, as well as various answers to the age-old question: does true love really exist? She meets Michael Cera, but isn’t sure if she believes in love. Michael Cera and Charlyne Yi share a weird sense of humor that speaks to me. I was depressed all day, and this movie lifted my spirits. Then I began to think about why my leg had been cramping for two days. I have a blood clot in my leg, I’m sure, and it’ll be heading towards my heart or lungs unless I go to a hospital asap. I don’t know if I should go jogging or keep it elevated. I googled the condition and a cause might be immobility for a longer period of time. I haven’t really left the apartment for a few months now.

Big Daddy is an American comedy-drama film directed by Dennis Dugan and starring Adam Sandler, which was released on June 25, 1999 by Columbia Pictures.

Googled symptoms may include the following: swelling (I don’t have any swelling), gradual onset of pain (not quite sure what that means, but it sort of stings), redness (nope), worsening leg pain when bending the foot (maybe), leg cramps at night (I woke up with a cramp that hasn’t gone away), bluish or whitish discoloration of skin (hell no!). So I don’t have EVERY symptom, but I’m still about to have a panic attack and call the paramedics. I took out my wife’s yoga mat and did 15 minutes of power crunch yoga. I heard a crunch coming from the general area of the presumed blood clot. In my book that’s a good thing, and it did calm me down a bit. Tomorrow I have to start working out again or I’m going to die. I don’t want to die. Took a shower and watched Big Daddy, the Adam Sandler movie. People give him too much shit. His movies might not be the best ones out there, but I like them. When you’re depressed you sometimes need some Adam Sandler comedy to cope. He’s a role model in a way. He’s hardly ever successful in his movies. Usually out of a job and dumped by his girlfriend, he always manages to work it all out and stay positive. That’s something I’m struggling to do too, although I’m failing miserably.

Paper Heart: Pretty good movie. Let’s say 7/10 points.

Big Daddy: Has its moments, but child acting takes down the overall points to a 6.8/10.

One of the hottest names in comedy in  is Judd Apatow, who is a producer on Superbad. Better still, the writer and one of the stars is another hot name, Seth Rogen (who starred in Apatow’s Knocked Up).

It is the waning days of their senior year and best friends Seth (Hill) and Evan (Cera) have passed through their high school years unremarkably, not cool enough to hang with the “A” crowd and as a result, score with the girls, but not quite dorky enough to be all-out geeks. There is a little tension in the air between them, however; Evan has been accepted to Dartmouth whereas Seth, who is not quite as smart as his friend, could only get into a state college.

They are going through their last weeks being put upon by jocks and wishing they could go to one last party, when they are invited to one by Jules (Stone), one of the cooler girls in school. The problem is that Seth has bragged that they have a fake ID and can get liquor for the party, so Jules is expecting them to. Making things worse, Becca (MacIasaac), a girl Evan has had a crush on, like, forever, is expecting him at the party too.

They might be okay though; their truly dorky friend Fogell (Mintz-Plasse) has gotten himself a fake ID which labels him a 25-year-old organ donor from Hawaii named McLovin (no first name). Seth is pulling his naturally curly hair out by the roots, but Fogell – er, McLovin – is confident. He goes into a liquor store, gets the items on the list provided by Seth and Evan, brings the bottles to the front counter – and gets cold-cocked by a robber.

The case is being investigated by two cops you won’t ever want to see pull you over – Slater (Hader) and Michaels (Rogen). They convince Fogell that they’ll drop him off wherever he wants to go and that they believe he’s a 25-year-old organ donor from Hawaii named McLovin. This forces Seth and Evan to improvise, leading them to the party from Hell. In the meantime, Fogell goes on a ridealong that makes “Cops” look like the “Donna Reed Show”.

This isn’t for the sensitive or the easily offended. The humor can be crude and sophomoric, and four letter words are used with great abandon. That said, this is easily one of the funniest movies of recent years. Some of the gags and jokes were laugh-out-loud, fall-out-of-your-seat, pee-your-pants funny.

The young actors do some really good work here. Mintz-Plasse, who looks like what Stewie from “The Family Guy” might look like when he grows up, is memorable as Fogell, getting not only the smarts right but also the awkwardness and false bravado letter perfect. It’s hard to believe he was only 17 years old at the time of filming. Hill has a great deal of potential, but he was unfocused at times and I wound up kind of getting sick of his character after awhile. MacIsaac is cute, sexy and does one of the better drunk seduction scenes you will ever witness.

Superbad was something of a surprise hit – although in all honesty Columbia’s publicity department pushed it hard. If you can get past the swearing and bodily fluids, you’re probably going to dig it big time. If not, well, there are reruns of I Love Lucy on TV Land that will suit you better.

WHY RENT THIS: Laugh-out-loud funny. Genuinely “gets” teenagers. Walks thin line between sentimentality and maudlin without falling off the rope.

WHY RENT SOMETHING ELSE: Extremely crude and sophomoric. Final third drags in places.

FAMILY MATTERS: Are you kidding? This is crude, lewd, rude and proud to be that way. Lots of filthy language, plenty of sexual situations and the unrated cut on the DVD is even farther afield than the theatrical release. Not for the kids in any way shape or form even though some of the more mature boys will want to see it.

TRIVIAL PURSUITS: The lead roles were named for co-writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

NOTABLE DVD EXTRAS: There are plenty in the extended unrated 2-disc DVD edition. There is a practical joke played on Jonah Hill as well as a faux documentary on actor Michael Cera, a staged interview in which Hill loses it during an interview with a snooty British interview, improvs done in the police cruiser with “special guest stars” including Justin Long, Chris Kattan, Jane Lynch and Kristen Wiig, as well as the traditional Apatow feature “Line-o-rama” in which lines of dialogue from the film are read by different actors.

FINAL RATING: 8/10

TOMORROW: Angels and Demons

These days, a similar thought bubble has been appearing over my head quite often. Sometimes it’s because of something I happen to see. Sometimes it’s because of something I think, or wonder about. Self-editing, however, is crucial, so you will not find these types of things here.

Also, I wanted to use this as an opportunity to plug Clark & Michael (pictured above), which is most likely the best internet TV show…ever. (And no, I am not qualified to make such a statement.) But really, how can you go wrong with Michael Cera playing a character who is basically George-Michael Bluth with an anger-management problem? If you don’t know what I’m talking about, I highly recommend watching all three seasons of the greatest television show of all time. Really. Or just borrow it from a friend, because I guarantee that if you’re in the 18-35 demographic, at least one of your friends owns this series.

If you’ve never seen Arrested Development, you’re probably sick of people telling you to watch it, so it’s the last time I’ll ever plug this show online again. (But we just want to make your life better, and more fulfilling. So much more fulfilling. )

Pero tal y como está el patio, con Hollywood más en plan industria que nunca, mirando cada céntimo invertido en una producción, no resultar rentable equivale a no ser querido… o, directamente, a ser odiado. He ahí el pecado de estos hombres (y una mujer): sacarle poco jugo a sus sueldos, más o menos generosos, pero soñados por cualquier mortal.

Se lleva la palma Will Ferrel, actor ¿cómico? que no deja de embarcarse en proyectos a cual más fallidos y que recauda 3,29 dólares por cada uno que se embolsa. Esta cifra, así, sin ponerla en contexto puede dejarnos fríos, pero acudamos a la socorrida comparación que nos proporciona la propia Forbes: en el extremo opuesto, la antítesis de Ferrell, el tierno Shia LaBeouf, gracias a sus dos Transformers, genera 160 dólares por película. ¡Casi 50 veces más que Ferrell! Tremendo.

Aquí se puede consultar ambas listas, la de los losers y la de los winners. Para los que sientan pereza ante el trámite, vaya por delante que a Ferrell, entre los menos rentables, le siguen Ewan McGregor, Billy Bob Thornton, Eddie Murphy y Ice Cube. Menudo plantel. Salvo Billy Bob, y en menor medida Ewan, el resto son para echarles de comer aparte (Ice Cube no debe ser siquiera considerado actor). En el otro extremo de la balanza, a LaBeouf le siguen James McAvoy, Michael Cera, Daniel Radcliffe y Robert Downey Jr.

Conclusión: para ser rentable hay que saber actuar (un mínimo), elegir bien el proyecto y, a poder ser, caer en una de esas superproducciones que hacen muchos dólares. Claro que a estas listas tampoco hay que concederles más importancia de la necesaria: si tu caché es bajo, es fácil que salgas bien parado en términos de productividad, y viceversa. Lo grave para Ferrell y compañía es que, a buen seguro, los ejecutivos de Hollywood sí se toman estas cosas muy, pero que muy en serio.

In primul rand, am pornit de la ideea ca e film, deci fictiune, deci nume, actiune total imaginate (chiar daca ar porni de la a true story). Asa ca m-am mirat putin cand Seth Rogen era chiar Seth Rogen sau Michael Cera asemeni. Deci personajele din film sunt reale (in frunte cu actrita-realizatoarea documentarului Charlyne Yi).

Merita vazut si pentru unele scene din film (cand ia interviu copiilor din parc “True love is when you love somebody soooo much. Like us grils love Chris Brown, but you don’t know him.” sau excursia la Paris :X).

Totusi un “-” maaare este faptul ca ideea de documentar – oameni reali, interviuri reale care devine o poveste de iubire – cea dintre Charlyne si Michael Cera – este un fals. Adica este fictiune pentru film. Daca ar fi fost in realitate ar fi fost chiar un concept interesant pentru film in general.

Oricum, castigator la Sundance Festival, actori interesanti, “Paper Heart” merge vazut intr-o seara din timpul saptamanii.

Though Michael Cera doesn’t quite hit the bar of awesomeness set by John Krasinski and his majesty Michael Paul Stephenson, it would be awesome to get the actor famous for playing himself to come to BU. “EVERY NIGHT HAS A SOUNDTRACK”

I think this was the sweetest movie I’ve seen in a while, and although I haven’t seen many movies in a while to begin with, this is definitely at the top of the list for the ones I have watched in recent months.

I like Michael Cera and Kat Dennings a lot; it doesn’t seem like they’re average people. I am oddly attracted to the people who play the weird protagonists in movies, not that they were weird but I just find them intriguing is all. This reminds me of Donnie Darko and how I fell in love with Jake Gyllenhaal. Now that is one good movie!

But anyway, I feel biased. Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist is based around music and the nightlife, which makes me like it even more.

Every few days I will have a post called “Movie Trailer of The Day,” where I post a video trailer of an upcoming movie that I think looks interesting. Today’s installment is Michael Cera’s upcoming comedy “Youth in Revolt.”

APPEARANCE: 3

I: Oh dear. Well, much like Justin Long, 99% of Michael Cera’s charm stems from his personality and not… his face. He’s cute, but he sometimes looks like an elfish girl. I enjoy how he embraces his paleness and he has a style that endears me to him. But I doubt we’d do a double take and lower our Ray-Bans all “DAAYUM!” when he walked down the street.

L: I am FREAKING out at the thought of Michael Cera and us riding the escalator separate ways, and then he purses his lips in a kiss at us as we pass and, overcome with desire, we desperately try to scramble back down the elevator in his direction, disrupting other shoppers. He is cute, but he looks frail, but unlike JGL, instead of risking breaking his fragile body in the sack, I’m more likely to ruffle MC’s hair and talk about how precious he is. Howevs! This look works for him! I can’t picture him beefing up and lifting cars with his pinky and suddenly being Hollywood’s stud. Besides, there are a great many girls out there who are endeared to scrawny, awkward boys. I know this for a fizz-act.

PORTFOLIO: 4.5

L: I support MC’s witty, geeky roles, such as in Arrested Development. Is that all he can do? I think he might be stuck for life, man. He’s like the Anthony Michael Hall of the ’00s: we enjoyed AMH being Farmer Ted and Gary and Brian, and then all of a sudden he’s the evil boyfriend in Edward Scissorhands, who’s made only more evil because AMH is not supposed to be like that! I think I’d lose my faith in America if I saw MC in a role where he’s acting like a dick. What can he do now?

I: Oh noes! I hope he’s not the AMH of the ’00s. That’s sad. But true, I can’t imagine him playing any sort of dick or a badass. Was he a believable foxy leading man in Nick & Norah? No, not really because it was laughable that someone like him would have a girlfriend like that hot, skinny chick who was grinding on the hood of his car. Well, I definitely endorse Arrested Development and his charming Paulie Bleeker ways in Juno. He needs to choose a role, though, where he’s not wearing a hoodie and doubting himself.

CHOICES: 4.5

I: I think it’s nice that he’s a writer and works with nobodies putting wacky antics on YouTube and the like. I think that’s age appropriate! He’s Canadian, so that’s a good time. My fave, though, is that according to his Wiki page, he was the voice of Brother Bear in the Berenstain Bears animated series from 2001-2003! How strange and fun!

L: EEP! Him being a Berenstain Bear earns him a trillion points! I’m ruffling his hair and calling him precious. Yes, I appreciate how he seems to be making smart career/life decisions yet seems to be living in the moment and enjoying himself. LOL @ you, again approving of someone’s “choice” of nationality.

PERSONALITY: 5

L: Michael Cera is definitely invited to the UP! I can see us hanging out with M.Show and the gang, and he’s making his nervous, breathy jokes, and both of us have our arms linked around MC’s elbow with our heads leaning on our shoulders because he’s just sew kewt! But I think at the UP we must get him drunk. I want to see him on the rooftop, bare-chested, his T-shirt tied around his head, screaming that he’s a golden god and then jumping into the pool. Then LL Cool J and Nick Lachey help him out, call him “big guy” and tell him how cool and brave he is.

I: SLFHSFSHFH BEST PARTY EVER. And I need to see LL Cool J helping drunken Michael Cera out of our pool (and saying, “It’s alright, playa”) like, TODAY. LOL @ his breathy jokes. I’m pining so hardcore to hang out with those dudes without a care in the world. However! I worry that Michael Cera might tire of being called “precious” and having his head patted and the like, so after we get him wasted, we need to find some equally cute and precious little awkward chick and have them hook up on top of all the coats in the guest room!

ROMANTIC POTENTIAL: 3.5

I: I think he’d make an awesome boyfriend! Just not for me, though. He seems like he’d try really hard and he’d always be sweet and remember things. Plus, he’d be a fun date to bring to gatherings. He’d probably (or definitely) be awkward in bed so he might need some total dominatrix woman who’s just going to throw him around in the sheets and be just fine with that.

L: I can’t not possibly envision being in the sack with Michael Cera, even if the awkward act is just a façade and he turns into Barry White in the bedroom or something. Could you imagine? I felt all sorts of wrong after his implied finger bang in Nick&Norah. Just…no. He should get with the chick who played his cousin Maeby in Arrested Development (who is going to be in the Runaways movie—so hot!), that’s the only couple I could see him being a part of. Oh, Michael Cera. Will you always be doomed to be the perfect guy for some other girl?

SUGGESTIONS

L: Call up Maeby and snag a date, son. And don’t be Anthony Michael Hall!

I: I suggest he become our friend and come to our party! And maybe do something really badass to get people to quit ruffling his hair.

I can’t wait to see his new film youth in revolt.

Suddenly, the French are cool again. The last two movies I’ve seen feature female leads obsessed with the culture of France.

In An Education, an Audrey Hepburn-esque Carey Mulligan sings along to French records and wants more than anything to see Paris. Meanwhile, Youth in Revolt’s Portia Doubleday wishes for a French man named Francois, leading the adorable Michael Cera to try out a skinny mustache and … well, I don’t want to give too much away.

Besides an affinity for the City of Lights and its country, the movies don’t share much except that they’re both worth seeing.

An Education is sophisticated — as most Peter Sarsgaard movies are — but has some funny moments. It’s a simple story about a teenager falling in love with an older man that, even though you know where it’s going, draws you in completely.

Nick Hornby’s script, even better than About a Boy, can claim part of the credit. Another reason is the soundtrack of old and new music that perfectly captures the 1960s setting; Ray Charles, Duffy and Juliette Greco (below) are all here.

Director Miguel Arteta’s Youth in Revolt is a dark comedy that showcases Michael Cera in a role that’s different than the ones we’ve seen him in before. His character, Nick Twisp, might not seem like a stretch at first, but the character changes when circumstances call for him to break the rules he’s always followed in order to win the girl he loves. (Nick Twisp: a name as brilliant as Holden Caulfield, don’t you think?)

This movie’s also quirky and smart, although it borders on wacky at times. I’m not really a fan of wacky, but I’ll watch Michael Cera in anything. Lucky us, he and his co-stars were at the AFI FEST screening we caught at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, posing for pictures and introducing themselves to the crowd.

IMDB says Youth in Revolt hits theaters Jan. 10, while An Education is already out in limited release.
