Book Review: THE LINEUP

It was cold this weekend in L.A. so I wore everything I own, causing my husband to say I looked homeless, but it was good because it made me stay in. I slept, read, drank lots of coffee, watched reruns of Fantasy Island without knowing why. And I finally wrote this review of The Lineup: The World’s Greatest Crime Writers Tell the Inside Story of Their Greatest Detectives, edited by Otto Penzler.

This is a collection featuring some of crime fiction’s most successful writers—Robert B. Parker, Laura Lippman, Lee Child, Robert Crais, among others—discussing the creation of their popular characters. Michael Connelly’s revelation that a real tunnel near his childhood home inspired Harry Bosch’s tunnel-rat background is both chilling and enlightening. Crais has a funny yet poignant conversation with Elvis Cole about their mutual fears and sense of hope, and gives a glimpse of Joe Pike’s inner world (it’s green!). Carol O’Connell’s badass ‘tude reminds me I gotta pick up another Mallory book. And though I’d heard most of Jack Reacher’s origin story at Child’s signings, it retains its charm in print.

Some of the other essays aren’t as successful. A few are too earnest and one outright creeps me out (not in a good way), but this is a great intro to the crime fiction world for those of you who haven’t taken the plunge. If you’re already a junkie like me, you’ll enjoy learning more about your favorite detectives while meeting those you’re not familiar with. I’m ashamed to say I’ve never read Ken Bruen, but after experiencing his blistering, profanity-laced piece (love his description of an Irish sport called hurling as “a cross between hockey and homicide”), I will rectify that situation.

I also want a hurly.

Sospesa fra Venezia e Parigi, la vita di Stefano Pietra è quella di un giovane pittore che non è ancora riuscito ad affermare il proprio talento e si barcamena in attesa di una grande occasione. A offrirgliela è l’amica Hélène de Surgérès, che lo presenta a Emmanuel Cordier, noto mercante d’arte. Per Stefano una mostra da Cordier vorrebbe dire la svolta tanto attesa e, forse, un trampolino per riconquistare anche lei, la bella enigmatica Hélène, che lui ha amato dal primo istante in cui l’ha vista, e che l’ha riamato intensamente per poi lasciarlo senza motivo apparente, come rapita da un rivale che in silenzio aveva sempre abitato nel suo cuore. Da Cordier Stefano fa conoscenza con Francois Ronan, un critico d’arte. L’uomo sembra molto interessato a lui e le sue attenzioni, che inizialmente lusingano Stefano, finiscono in breve per allarmarlo, cariche come sono di un presagio funesto che il giovane pittore non sa come interpretare. Ronan, che per l’aspetto gli ricorda un ufficiale nazista, si rivela indecifrabile proprio come il pezzo più prezioso della sua collezione privata: un’antica maschera funebre di origine micenea alla quale tiene sopra a ogni cosa. Quel che è certo è che l’uomo cova un oscuro segreto ed è preda di una misteriosa ossessione. Il suo istinto di prevaricazione sembra trascinare tutto ciò che tocca e non tarderà a travolgere anche Stefano in un gorgo di angoscia e mistero, gelosia e vendetta, al cui centro vi è un arcano rituale dallo sconcertante potere.

Si rendono subito conto che nella piccola cittadina la vita non è affatto tranquilla come appare, e quello che sarebbe dovuto essere un tranquillo weekend in campagna si trasforma in un intrigo che sembra non avere fine.

Un romanzo corale e incalzante, minuziosamente accurato nella ricostruzione di una città, di un’epoca e delle psicologie dei personaggi, di diversa estrazione sociale ma della stessa tragica statura. Un romanzo nel quale tutti pagano un prezzo al momento storico in cui è toccato loro vivere e agli egoismi che sempre genera ogni guerra, rendendo ciascuno dei protagonisti vittima e carnefice.

Al suo fianco, la proprietaria del giornale locale, un paramedico, una consigliera comunale e tre ragazzi coraggiosi. Nessuno all’esterno può aiutarli, la barriera è inaccessibile. Ma un’altra separazione, altrettanto invisibile e letale, si insinua come un gas velenoso nel microcosmo che la Cupola ha isolato: quella fra gli onesti e i malvagi. Tutti loro, buoni e cattivi, dovranno fare i conti con la Cupola stessa, un incubo da cui sembra impossibile salvarsi. Ormai il tempo rimasto è poco, anzi sta proprio finendo, come l’aria…

Verrà collocato ad Alessandria, a significare che la città è e sarà il cuore pulsante dell’ellenismo. La sua tomba subirà l’assalto di Tolomeo, riceverà visitatori come Ottaviano Augusto, vedrà Caligola impadronirsi della sua armatura finché l’imperatore Settimio Severo non “sigillerà” il sepolcro perché il sonno dell’eroe non venga più disturbato. Ma allora come mai, a poco più di un secolo di distanza, del sepolcro di Alessandro non si sa più nulla? La caccia alla tomba perduta ricomincia nell’Ottocento, quando i primi esploratori che si mettono sulle sue tracce si perdono nelle viscere del sottosuolo… Ancora oggi il mistero continua e la caccia prosegue.

York, inverno 1372. Secondo la credenza popolare, le ferite di un cadavere riprendono a sanguinare quando si avvicina il suo assassino. Quasi fosse un segno divino, dal corpo di Drogo, il barcaiolo appena estratto dal fiume dove era caduto, il sangue comincia a fluire all’approssimarsi del maestro Nicholas Ferriby. E non importa che Drogo non sia ancora morto, né che le sue ferite fossero state momentaneamente sanate dall’acqua gelida: la sentenza della folla, radunatasi intorno al malcapitato, è che il maestro Ferriby abbia tentato di annegarlo. È molto più facile incolpare quest’ultimo piuttosto che gli studenti che stavano dando la caccia al barcaiolo per aver rubato – dicono – la borsa di un loro compagno. Del resto, il maestro è già reo, agli occhi della gente di York, di aver aperto una scuola in concorrenza con quella della cattedrale, nonché di sostenere tesi prossime all’eresia. Alla morte di Drogo, gli animi si accendono. Ma Owen Archer, capitano delle guardie dell’arcivescovo, interviene per sedare i pregiudizi ed evitare linciaggi. Insospettito dalle ferite del barcaiolo, che sembrano provocate da un’arma avvelenata, capisce infatti che dietro la sua morte c’è ben più del furto di una borsa o della bravata di qualche studente.

Se la crisi ha ridotto al rango di semplici milionari quasi un terzo dei “signori nove zeri” inclusi nella lista annuale della rivista Forbes, non sono di certo loro a pagare il conto di un ventennio di finanza sconsiderata. Che differenza c’è, in fondo, tra sedere in cima a una montagna di 4 miliardi di dollari e una di appena 3 o 2? Sometimes I think I’m never going to read another big-name writer, especially one who works in suspense-thriller realm. I really thought that would be the case when I finished “The Scarecrow” a few months ago.

I told myself I would spend the next half-dozen books reading writers whose names I’d never heard before. (Turns out in some cases there’s a reason you’d never heard the names.)

So when “9 Dragons” came long, I found I couldn’t resist Connelly’s next challenge for Harry Bosch. After so many entertaining yarns, why would I ever swear off Michael Connelly? Maybe it was Harry Bosch I missed.

When I had finished “Scarecrow,” one word came to mind as I closed the book:

Tired.

Connelly is a former reporter—and so am I (twenty years worth). Connelly’s newsroom tidbits are good and so is the idea of writing about a newsroom veteran on his way through the downsizing wringer. The “newspapers in decline” backdrop is nifty. It sets up a terrific timeframe for the book, that our hero has only two weeks—until his job expires—to report and write a story that will light the city on fire. The idea of “springing an innocent” during his final run has considerable appeal, of course, and Jack McEvoy has just the “case” he needs, a wrongly accused inner city kid.

But it’s not a “case” and that’s where I think Connelly has McEvoy approach things too much like a cop (hello, Harry Bosch) and not like a reporter. Not like a reporter at all. McEvoy’s methods, approach, mobility and style are much more cop-like than reporter-like, even given the loose license McEvoy is given since this is allegedly his “last story.”

“This is getting pretty far- fetched, isn’t it?” McEvoy asks when thinking about how many firewalls and computer systems the bad guy would have had to crash in order to wreak so much havoc within the L.A. Times network.

The answer is, “yes, pretty far-fetched.”

The plot feels baked with a random series of cookie cutters. The bad guy’s warped sense of humanity is sprung from the familiar inner volcano of psycho/sexual perversions. The bad guy saddles up next to McEvoy at a bar without McEvoy knowing it’s him. (Seen this before?) FBI agent Rachel Walling loses her badge and then regains it, drum roll please, just in the nick of time. (I’ve never seen bureaucracy move so fast.) The bad guy is a mentor for other up-and-coming psychos and his students have to “prove” their worth to the master. The ticking clock near the end—the most thought and action ever recorded in a 45-seconds span—is straight pulp.

Two lines in particular made me think Connelly had a good idea for this book and then mailed it in.

Number one from McEvoy: “The thought chilled me to the center of my soul.”

Number two: “I was part of the story again—I had killed one of the people the story was about.”

Some writers would have ripped those up, started up. I had concerns for franchise writers everwhere, even the good ones.

And then I read “9 Dragons.”

Action-packed, yes.

Still Harry Bosch?

All the way. “9 Dragons” is a book of reactions. There are no long scenes where Bosch is thoughtfully reviewing a case file and uncovering what others missed. There is no granular deconstruction of a case, but it is still smart, deductive Harry Bosch, just flashing a bit more James Bond this time around. Even with heaps of action and some heart-pounding hunts, the plot is intricate and does some nifty dips and turns at the end.

“9 Dragons” follows a deadly series of steps stemming from the murder of a liquor store owner in L.A., near where Bosch had done some work during the big Los Angeles riots. The murder quickly propels Bosch into warp speed when his daughter’s life is threatened half way around the world, in Hong Kong. The situation gives Bosch plenty of ripe opportunities to question every relationship in his life—partners, other detectives, ex-wife and daughter too. In “9 Dragons,” it’s Bosch’s agenda.

“Bosch was most at home in a case when he was pushing the action himself, setting the track for others to follow. He wasn’t a sideman. He had to drive the beat.”

The steps to find the precise building in Hong Kong where his daughter is being held are clever. It’s much too early in the proceedings, of course, to actually find his daughter, however, and Bosch’s blood boils harder. The relentless pursuit from that point forward is cinematic and hard-charging. Completely original? Perhaps not. Well-done? Your fingernails will attest to the suspense.

“9 Dragons” is Harry Bosch out of his clinical, analytical element. He is “in some sort of medieval painting.” The normal assumptions aren’t as dependable. Living out on the edge of his senses and at the bitter tips of his anger, Bosch makes some serious mistakes.

“9 Dragons” is quite a ride.

Franchise writers? I’ll try to be more selective in the future.

El 3 de octubre de 1995, a las diez en punto de la mañana, el portavoz del jurado del caso O.J. Simpson pronunció las palabras mágicas: no culpable. Más de 150 millones de estadounidenses vieron la ceremonia por televisión y escucharon esas dos palabras, el veredicto del juicio más seguido por el público y los medios de comunicación. La “O. J. manía”, uno de los fenómenos mediáticos más sorprendentes de la historia, surgió de la unión entre televisión y justicia.

En España queda mucho camino por andar. Acaba de terminar el juicio por el asesinato de Nagore Laffage, la joven estrangulada durante los Sanfermines del pasado año por un psiquiatra de la Clínica Universitaria de Navarra, y las audiencias televisivas han sido irrelevantes. Pequeños empujones a unos informativos y magazines matinales acostumbrados a lo macabro. Pero no se preocupen amantes de la crónica negra, porque acaba de arrancar el juicio por el crimen de Fago. Entre uno y otro suceso han podido disfrutar de litigios menores, como el crimen de la catana o el asesinato de Sandra Palo. Lo justo para quitarse el mono.

La suerte de Santiago Mainar la podemos seguir a la carta: en directo en CNN+, en diferido en el resto de informativos, o bien en reposados reportajes y tertulias vocingleras. Lamentablemente, el presunto autor de los disparos que acabaron con la vida del alcalde de Fago es guarda forestal, no jugador de la NFL. Huesca no es California, y Fago no está en Los Ángeles. Resultan enormes las diferencias entre ABC, CNN o Discovery y Telecinco, Antena 3 o TVE. Esta última, sin ir más lejos, suspendió la reposición prevista para el pasado fin de semana de “Fago”, una mini serie espantosa. ¡Qué grave error, qué concesión a la razón, qué mojigatería televisiva! La justicia, para que pueda ser disfrutada en toda su grandeza, debe ser popular y ocupar el prime time.

Así lo entendió Telecinco, que dedicó tres horas de su programación de tarde del domingo a Fago, con un reportaje y un especial, presentado por María Teresa Campos, que incluía la presencia en directo de la hermana de Mainar. “¡Que no se vayan de rositas!”, reclamaba en un alarde de profesionalidad la veterana presentadora ante la mirada atónita de Marcos García Montes, abogado de Mainar. García Montes, letrado de tantas y tantas inolvidables superproducciones, es uno de esos abogados televisivos que parecen aceptar los casos no tanto por la índole del delito, sino por su repercusión mediática. ¿Recuerdan a James Wood en “Shark”? Pues eso.

Nos gusta la ficción, pero preferimos la realidad. Buena prueba de ello es que court shows como “Tribunal popular” o “De buena ley” pasaron a la historia. Siempre habrá un buen crimen pasional, un robo con violencia, un asesinato con ensañamiento, que nos ayuden a recordar que los monstruos son otros. Lo inaudito es que se retransmitan procesos judiciales protagonizados por personajes anónimos. Seguro que ustedes permanecerían hipnotizados delante de sus pantallas viendo en el banquillo a Mario Conde, los Albertos, Roca, Julián Muñoz o cualquier político corrupto, de esos que se quejan cuando les graban saliendo esposados del ayuntamiento. El éxito de O.J. Simpson demostró que los espectadores exigen telerealidad de calidad, que es tanto como pedir acusados mediáticos. La “Mainar manía” es imposible. Por tanto, nada de delitos de barrio, asesinos sin nombre y chorizos de medio pelo. En el banquillo, galacticos.

Eurodisney. En eso dicen en el PP que se convirtió el último mitin del PSOE, celebrado ayer en Madrid. Y lo dicen porque intentó revolucionar el concepto tradicional de acto político, convirtiéndolo en todo un show televisivo. ¿A la norteamericana? No sé si tanto… En el PSOE hablan de mitin interactivo. Hubo música en directo, presentadores-animadores, reporteros que entrevistaban a los protagonistas, grandes pantallas de vídeo, entradas triunfales de líderes y lideresas por una alfombra roja, cámaras persiguiendo a Zapatero y señora por los pasillos… ¿Eurodisney? Efectivamente. Igual de hortera.

Que no es otra cosa que aceptar una solicitud de la cadena Cortes TV para emitir en directo segmentos del juicio. Ni el fiscal ni él ponen reparos. “Al fin y al cabo es propaganda gratuita, en mi caso para conseguir nuevos clientes”, confiesa el abogado.

Michael Connelly reúne en su último libro, por primera vez, a Haller y Harry Bosch, los dos grandes protagonistas de sus novelas. El peso de la historia cae sobre el primero, que tras un periodo de mala fortuna a nivel profesional hereda todos los casos de un compañero asesinado. El caso estrella del lote, la defensa de un productor cinematográfico acusado del asesinato de su mujer, se complica de tal manera que requiere la colaboración de ambos personajes. Haller y Bosch, espíritus aparentemente antagónicos, están condenados a entenderse. Lo hacen en esta nueva joya negra de Connelly.

Finally finished the latest Stephen King “Under the Dome.” This is no mean feat considering it’s 1070 pages long. I’m not complaining. I would much rather have a book of this length to tide me over for a week, than a 200 page sprint from a favorite author, that just leaves my begging for more. My poor husband, my poor children, they all know better. Don’t bother mom when a new Stephen King, Matthew Reilly, Douglas Preston, Lee Child, Jeffery Deaver book comes out. All parenting, canoodling, cooking, cleaning stops. (I went to knitting group yesterday, and it took every ounce of strength I had not to bring that damn book)

Being that it’s a very long book, it goes pretty quick. Not sure if Steve-o is as big of an Ayn Rand fan as I am, but caught some glimmers of “Atlas Shrugged” near the end. Also very evident is a “Lord of the Flies” mentality that occurs throughout the whole book. It’s even brought up once.

Midway through the book, a very pleasant appearance from, the one and only, Jack Reacher, of Lee Child fame. Love this character, and it brought a big smile to my face to have one of my favourite authors use another one of my favourite authors best character in his book. Makes me wonder…does Stephen call up Lee and say, “Would it be okay if I used this guy in passing in my latest book?” How does that work? There are other authors who do this, and I find it fascinating. If anybody hasn’t read the Lee Child books. Go for it. Jack Reacher is the best. I’d want him on my side.

Back to “Under the Dome”. Not sure how to classify it, not quite horror, mystery, thriller or sci-fi. Kind of a mix of all of them. Huge cast of characters, hard to keep track of, but he does provide you with a character list at the front of the book. New ground for Mr. King. Also new, no blurbs on either front or back jacket cover, no picture of Mr. King either. Interesting? Odd? You be the judge. Of course, it takes place in Maine, though not Castle Rock. After reading some 30 books, I have no desire to ever move to Maine. If nothing else, the imagination tends to run a little wild there.

If they make this into a movie, let’s just hope not. No Molly Ringworm, no Gary Sinise, no Jamie Sheridan, though Rob Lowe would make an excellent Baarbie. Please no made for tv movies. If necessary have Frank Darabont, or Rob Reiner direct.

Lastly, Tabitha King should be nominated for sainthood. You’ve got my vote lady. How you’ve managed for 40 (I think that’s right, I know your oldest daughter and she’s just about my age) yrs, is beyond my comprehension.

I have a staggering stack of books to get to, which shall I chose next? New Vince Flynn or new Michael Connolly?

Book 8: 9 Dragons (Harry Bosch #15) by Michael Connelly

I steamrolled through the last three books just to get to this book, the fifteenth Harry Bosch novel, and by God, was it worth the wait. Again, Connelly seems intent on shaking the foundations of his own series like an epileptic with a snowglobe. From where Echo Park ended to where 9 Dragons finally comes to a close, you can hardly believe you’ve been reading the same series.

SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN’T READ THE SERIES

Bosch is working Special Homicide when he’s called down to a murder in Chinatown. The liquor store owner from an earlier novel, when mobs swarm the city looking for vengeance and murder one of the crooked cops who had taken Bosch hostage, is found dead in his store. Bosch feels that one of the Triad gangs are involved and traces the murderer to Hong Kong where his ex-lover Eleanor Wish lives with their thirteen year old daughter Maddie. Again, Connelly loves to shelf characters only to bring them back for devastating results.

While trying to corner a Triad henchman, Bosch receives a video on his cellphone of his daughter being kidnapped and held for ransom. What follows is Bosch on a hellacious journey through the underbelly of Hong Kong with Eleanor Wish, who’s become a casino attraction — play poker against the white lady — and her bodyguard. Bosch spends a sleepless insane 39 hour day pouring through Hong Kong trying to find his daughter at any cost.

The action is a little slapdash and punch-drunk, mirroring the feel of the tireless pursuit for justice. But Connelly gets a little lazy with his novel, and the plot goes uneven. Which is insane considering that he continues to eliminate major characters and shake up the plot. From this point, I truly have no idea how the series will continue from here. He’s truly twisted Bosch’s life around, but the series is starting to feel unsure. Connelly is starting to send his main character to foreign lands, to swap out characters and partners ever other book, and to take huge risks and leaps with the plot. Normally, this could be a really healthy shot in the arm for a series as long running as this one, but is starting to feel like Connelly is going to go off the rails pretty soon. I’m scared that Bosch is going to start going all Mafia Wars with his plot and have Bosch tackling the Vory or the Mafiya, or buying unlicensed cabs in Cuba.

Book 7: The Brass Verdict (Harry Bosch 14, Mickey Haller 2) by Michael Connelly

This book actually intersects three of Connelly’s more popular characters: detective Harry Bosch in his 14th book, the third book featuring reporter Jack McEvoy, and the second novel featuring sketchy lawyer Mickey Haller. Since the novel is narrated from Haller’s perspective, it’s really his novel. Connelly loves to weave together the other characters in crossover work. Jeffrey Deaver is the only other one I’ve seen do the spinoff as good, though Preston and Child are pretty much legendary for it. Again, I offer you a review with my usual disclaimer — pointless, Nicole murder, so forth. Read the other novels. The Poet and The Lincoln Lawyer are great novels.

SPOILERS FORTH.

Mickey Haller is recovering from the injuries sustained at the end of the Lincoln Lawyer. He’s a wonderfully despicable lawyer character. While most law books feature noble or just causes, Haller defends the scum. He’s a pill-popping scumbag, and it’s awesome seeing him in action.

In this book, Haller has inherited the caseload of another famous lawyer who has recently died through suspect circumstances. Among his many clients, Haller finds himself defending a famous Hollywood producer from the double murder of his wife and her lover. Meanwhile, Bosch enters the story investigating the murder of Jerry Vincent, the recently deceased attorney. The killer may now be pursuing Haller.

As procedurals go, it’s not too bad. Haller’s sidekicks — the plucky receptionist Dot and her lover and Haller’s investigator Chico — are pretty amusing and interesting, but the entire story feels like what it is: a marketing ploy to crossover multiple characters in his novels. It doesn’t do jackshit for Bosch or McEvoy — it’s actually a little detrimental to McEvoy — but for Haller its pure gravy. The origin of the title is pretty fucking brilliant — but a huge spoil to give away the meaning of a brass verdict. However, the finale is a little stupidly soap opera and completely unnecessary. It does create a nice set-up for the next novel. Which we get to now.

Book 6: The Overlook (Harry Bosch, Book 13) by Michael Connelly

On we go. I would again like to point out the futility of trying to sell you and explain the greatness of the lucky number 13th book of a detective series, but I fear for Nicole’s vengeance. Read Harry Bosch, you dicks. And again, I warn you that after the fact, spoilers will occur.

SPOILERS TO FOLLOW FOOLS

As I said Connelly ended the last novel with a doozy. For no explainable reason, Bosch is suddenly now back on the Homicide Special division with a new commanding officer and a new partner — Ignacio “Iggy” Ferras. Compared to Jerry Edgar (a shadier version of The Bunk) and Kiz Rider, Ferras is a poor replacement. He’s a hungry young dogooder who shirks responsibility for his pregnant wife at home. He’s a poor partner for the gruff Bosch, not offering any of the conflict from either of the previous partners. The only establishing point of Ferras is that he wants Bosch desperately to call him Iggy and that he’s constantly heading home because his wife is pregnant and demanding.

On to the case. A scientist is found dead on a Mulholland Drive overlook — the one that I take everyone to because it has a great view of the Hollywood sign as well as a great view of the Hollywood Bowl and the city. The scientist was a cancer researcher and thus was able to procure several radioactive chemicals that could possibly be used for terrorist activities. And so in comes Rachel Walling, Bosch’s old flame and an FBI Agent. She actually makes an appearance in the previous book, as a temporary flame. That’s one of the things I really liked about the series. At first, it seemed like Connelly was going to fall into the same trap as most detective novels with a Bond like assortment of lovers for the lead. But Connelly has really done a spectacular job with Bosch’s romantic interests. His first love Eleanor Wish gave birth to Bosch’s daughter Maddie, and now Bosch has fallen for a new agent.

The rest of the novel is kind of lame with the obvious Homeland Security/Terrorism red herrings. It’s really hamfisted compared to Connelly’s usual efforts. Bosch saves the day, and the finale is pretty unspectacular. It feels like a particularly lackluster Special Victims Unit episode. But I’m loyal to series, and I know that Connelly won’t disappoint. Everyone’s allowed one slight dip.

Book 5: Echo Park (Harry Bosch Series, Book 12) by Michael Connelly

I was given the newest Harry Bosch novel, number 15 called 9 Dragons, from the kind people at the Hachette Book Group, and so I decided to pound through the three books that separated me from it’s greatness. It’s pretty spectacular to realize how quickly this series warped over the course of these four books. Again, I point to the futility of writing reviews of books in a series 15 deep, but hey, Nicole’s a harsh taskmistress.

Be forewarned, this may be considered to contain spoilers. If you haven’t read the series, I would highly recommend it. It’s hardboiled detective fiction set in Los Angeles, and it does a wonderful job of both demonizing and romanticizing the city. I didn’t start reading this until I actually moved out here, and Connelly does a spectacular job of evolving his character. Bosch starts out before the LA Riots, and progresses as a character through the Watts riots, the Rodney King riots, 9/11, each time adding a new layer and new wrinkle to the plot. Bosch reminds me a combination of Dirty Harry, McNulty and Lenny Briscoe, and I mean that in the highest regard. Start with The Black Echo and catch up. The series stays fresh, and takes some wild turns.

SPOILERS BELOW

Bosch has rejoined the force after retiring and finds himself working the Unsolved cases — basically he went from Homicide to Colombo to now Cold Case. He’s working with his old partner Kiz Rider, who reminds me of the prototype for Kima Greggs on the wire, a young black by the book detective (also a lesbian — besides the point). Bosch is working one of his old cases — the mysterious disappearance of a young woman — when a call comes in. A serial killer was accidentally discovered in the Echo Park area of LA, having been found with several bags of body parts in his van. The killer claims he will lead the detectives to the locations of nine other bodies — including that of the body of the young woman. But they have to allow him to take him to the corpse and they have to take the death penalty off the table.

It seems like it’s going to be a rote by the book thriller, with escapes and red herrings and Bosch getting angry at the injustice of the system. It felt like Connelly himself had no idea what to do with Bosch at this point anymore. But by the end of the novel, Connelly has essentially gone full fucking Etch-a-Sketch shake with his characters. He kills off or eliminates almost the entire cast of folks. It’s pretty impressive and made for a satisfying blast of air into a series that might have starting getting a little long in the tooth. And I continue to love the hell out of Bosch.

Illinois 2010 Elections: David Schroeder Hits State Rep. Ken Dunkin over Past "Sex Smear" Attack; Hamos Successor Debate; Kotowski, Connor, Harris, Hoffman, McNeil, Williams, and Quinn

(Chicago, IL) — November 17, 2009. From the Illinois 2010 elections candidate and cow-pie trail…

… In Democratic State Rep. candidate David Schroeder’s battle against incumbent Ken Dunkin (D-Chicago) in the Illinois 5th House district, the challenger has gone harsh. Schroeder is equating Dunkin’s challenge to his petitions to an alleged “sex smear” attack by Dunkin against Alderman Pat Dowell in the 2008 3rd Ward Committeeman’s race.

In a press release yesterday, Schroeder said:

“Last week he made a frivolous challenge to the petitions of our campaign in an attempt to rob the voters of the 5th District of their Democratic right to vote for the best candidate. This is politics-as-usual for Ken Dunkin, during his race for 3rd Ward Committeeman he illegally released campaign material under a fake campaign committee’s name, making outlandish and intolerant sexual claims against his opponent.”

In that 2008 race, a direct mail piece attacked Dowell ostensibly over property taxes, but whose purpose was to crudely claim Dowell is a lesbian–as if there is something wrong with that. The postal permit indicia on the piece belonged to Dunkin. That attack was despicable.

But whether Dunkin’s petition challenge amounts to an equally reprehensible political tactic, THE iLLINOIS OBSERVER would have to disagree. Petition challenges are permitted under Illinois election law. There is nothing immoral or ethics in the exercise of a candidate’s rights under the law. Petition challenges are legal politics.

Moreover, to equate a petition challenge to a “sex smear” attack devalues the immoral and unethical calumny that the attack on Dowell represents. They are not equal. Schroeder is wright on Dowell, but wrong on the nature of Dunkin’s petition challenge.

The Truth About the Health Care Bills – Michael Connelly, Ret. Constitutional Attorney 08.24.09

Well, I have done it! I have read the entire text of proposed House Bill 3200: The Affordable Health Care Choices Act of 2009. I studied it with particular emphasis from my area of expertise, constitutional law. I was frankly concerned that parts of the proposed law that were being discussed might be unconstitutional. What I found was far worse than what I had heard or expected.

To begin with, much of what has been said about the law and its implications is in fact true, despite what the Democrats and the media are saying. The law does provide for rationing of health care, particularly where senior citizens and other classes of citizens are involved, free health care for illegal immigrants, free abortion services, and probably forced participation in abortions by members of the medical profession.

The Bill will also eventually force private insurance companies out of business and put everyone into a government run system. All decisions about personal health care will ultimately be made by federal bureaucrats and most of them will not be health care professionals. Hospital admissions, payments to physicians, and allocations of necessary medical devices will be strictly controlled.

However, as scary as all of that it, it just scratches the surface. In fact, I have concluded that this legislation really has no intention of providing affordable health care choices. Instead it is a convenient cover for the most massive transfer of power to the Executive Branch of government that has ever occurred, or even been contemplated. If this law or a similar one is adopted, major portions of the Constitution of the United States will effectively have been destroyed.

The first thing to go will be the masterfully crafted balance of power between the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of the U.S. Government. The Congress will be transferring to the Obama Administration authority in a number of different areas over the lives of the American people and the businesses they own. The irony is that the Congress doesn’t have any authority to legislate in most of those areas to begin with. I defy anyone to read the text of the U.S. Constitution and find any authority granted to the members of Congress to regulate health care.

This legislation also provides for access by the appointees of the Obama administration of all of your personal healthcare information, your personal financial information, and the information of your employer, physician, and hospital. All of this is a direct violation of the specific provisions of the 4th Amendment to the Constitution protecting against unreasonable searches and seizures. You can also forget about the right to privacy. That will have been legislated into oblivion regardless of what the 3rd and 4th Amendments may provide.

If you decide not to have healthcare insurance or if you have private insurance that is not deemed ´acceptable’ to the ´Health Choices Administrator’ appointed by Obama there will be a tax imposed on you. It is called a ´tax’ instead of a fine because of the intent to avoid application of the due process clause of the 5th Amendment. However, that doesn’t work because since there is nothing in the law that allows you to contest or appeal the imposition of the tax, it is definitely depriving someone of property without the due process of law.

So, there are three of those pesky amendments that the far left hate so much out the original ten in the Bill of Rights that are effectively nullified by this law. It doesn’t stop there though. The 9th Amendment that provides: ´The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people;’ The 10th Amendment states: ´The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are preserved to the States respectively, or to the people.’ Under the provisions of this piece of Congressional handiwork neither the people nor the states are going to have any rights or powers at all in many areas that once were theirs to control.

I could write many more pages about this legislation, but I think you get the idea. This is not about health care; it is about seizing power and limiting rights. Article 6 of the Constitution requires the members of both houses of Congress to ´be bound by oath or affirmation to support the Constitution.’ If I was a member of Congress I would not be able to vote for this legislation or anything like it without feeling I was violating that sacred oath or affirmation. If I voted for it anyway, I would hope the American people would hold me accountable.

Crisis of Faith

I am reading Bloodwork by Michael Connelly. The main character in the book is a former FBI profiler, Terry McCaleb, on medical retirement from the Bureau after a heart transplant. It’s a good book and I’m enjoying it. One of the very minor storylines involves religion– McCaleb becomes involved with the sister of the woman who donated the heart that was transplanted into him. The sister, Graciela, is deeply religious. McCaleb is not; he tells her that the many tragedies and horrible crimes he saw while he was in the Bureau have convinced him that there is no god. It drives a wedge between them, because her faith is important to her and she wants him to accept her faith.

I was very worried about where this was going, because this kind of thing happens again and again in fiction, movies and television. As an atheist it drives me nuts because the assumption that so many people make is that I am an atheist because I have lost my faith or because of some traumatic event or events that turned me away from god. They cannot accept that there is rationality behind my lack of religious beliefs.

The thing is, there are a lot of people who claim to be atheists, but they really aren’t. They have lost their faith because of life events, and should more accurately be called lapsed Christians. They’ve not really thought about what it means to be an atheist. They are hurting. Once they stop hurting, they will probably pick up the faith and move on. I have absolutely no problem with that– I’m not opposed to Christians or Christianity. I just really dislike the implication that the only reason I am NOT a Christian is because I am having a crisis of faith.

To my great relief Michael Connelly ended without having his character having his faith “restored.” At the end of the book, McCaleb tells Graciela that he has faith in HER, and she has to decide whether that is enough. It was a nice distinction on his part- and one that people everywhere, Christian or atheist, make all the time.

Michael Connelly (famed detective writer and former LA Times reporter) rented and wrote out of – for a short time – the same apartment that the grandfather of the modern detective story – Raymond Chandler – wrote out of in the 1930’s. Having moved from Florida to LA in 1987, Connelly went to the High Tower Apartments to see where the famed 1930’s writer had once written his most famous character stories. The cigarette marks were still on the walls, Connelly noticed. Before leaving Connelly had the manager swear that he would call him if the apartment ever became available, which it did ten years later, at which time Connelly rented it and wrote out of it for several years before finally moving on to more comfortable writing locations – an office with air conditioning.

DECKARKATALOGEN

En av de saker som bekymrat många i samband med deckartidskriften Jurys nedläggning är ”Deckarkatalogen”. Jurys gamla redaktion fortsätter dock med den, och den kommer att publiceras på Svenska Deckarakademins hemsida. Årets katalog är planerad att läggas ut i månadsskiftet november-december. Katalogen kommer i princip att ha samma utformning som i Jury, med undantag för att den endast listar nyutgåvor i urval: sådant som har speciellt intresse, som nya upplagor av klassiker eller andra äldre verk, reviderade nyutgåvor etc.
Redaktionen är givetvis oerhört tacksamma för alla tips, inte minst då det gäller utgåvor från pod-förlag och andra småförlag, som det är svårt att ha koll på. Bara maila bjw-forlaget@comhem.se

ÅRETS SVENSKA DECKARE

Några fakta vad det gäller utgivningen av svensk kriminallitteratur i år kan redan nu avslöjas. Det publiceras cirka 90 nya titlar, och av dessa kommer runt 35 (alltså mer än en tredjedel) från pod-förlag, egenförlag, hobbyförlag och andra förlag med starkt begränsat utgivning. Av de 90 titlarna kommer inte mindre än 40 från genredebutanter. Uppgifter om att intresset för kriminallitteratur är på väg att minska i Sverige förfaller alltså felaktig, åtminstone vad utgivningen beträffar. Lägg till ett par finlandssvenska böcker samt hittills cirka 115 översatta deckare… så handlar det om fler än 200 nya deckartitlar i år! I månadsskiftet oktober-november kommer Svenska Deckarakademin att nominera böcker till sina ”stora priser” (bästa svenska och bästa till svenska översatta deckare i år). Uppgifter kommer att läggas ut på Svenska Deckarakademins hemsida.

SORGLIGT – OCH GLÄDJANDE

Om 200 titlar låter mycket finns det ändå vissa sorgliga svagheter. En är att novellsamlingarna lyser med sin frånvaro: vad det gäller det svenskproducerade sådana finns bara en annonserad ny juldeckarantologi från Semic. En annan är bristen på facklitteratur om deckare – det kommer av allt att döma endast tre titlar. Två är BTJ Förlags 13 svenska deckardamer, samt Lars Strands “Dr W & Mr H” om Sherlock Holmes. Den tredje är en positiv överraskning: Laura Thompsons Agatha Christie – An English Mystery kommer på svenska i översättning av Ulla Trenter som Agatha Christie – ett engelskt mysterium. Det är Sandelins förlag, som nyligen döptes om till Deckarförlaget Pussel, som publicerar boken i höst – provexemplar fanns tillgängliga på bokmässan i september. Pussel har också kommit med ett par översättningar av engelska deckare, och i planerna finns nyutgåvor av Stieg Trenters romaner. Först ut är Farlig fåfänga, som också den presenterades i form av provtryck på bokmässan.

FLER PRISER TILL LARSSON

Den 15–18 augusti arrangerades årets Bouchercon i Indianapolis i USA, och man delade där också ut sina Tony Awards. Stieg Larsson kunde i sin himmel glädja sig åt att The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo fick pris som bästa debutdeckare. Dessutom fick Peter Mendelsund pris för bästa omslag för The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Tony-priset för bästa roman gick till The Brass Verdict av Michael Connelly. Och som bästa referensbok belönades (kanske inte helt oväntat) Anthony Boucher: A Biobibliography av Jeffrey Marks. Men det räcker inte med detta. The Mystery Readers International har delat ut sina Macavity-priser, och även här gick debutpriset till Larsson och The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Lite mer märkligt är ett tredje pris, nämligen Barry-priset, som delas ut av Mystery News och Deadly Pleasures. Där fick nämligen The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo pris som ”Best British Novel”, hur nu det gick till. Och som bästa roman belönades minsann The Draining Lake av Arnaldur Indridason.

IN MEMORIAM

Det verkar inte klokt, men hur man än letar i Libris kan man inte hitta en översättning av någon av Stuart M(elvin) Kaminskys böcker. Blir det någon framöver är det för sent för honom att glädja sig åt den: Kaminsky (f. 1934) avled den 9 oktober. Han smittades med hepatit B då han tjänstgjorde i de amerikanska sjukvårdstrupperna i Frankrike på 1950-talet. I mars i år blev det äntligen klart att han skulle genomgå en levertransplantation i St. Louis – men bara några dagar innan den skulle ske drabbades han av den stroke som i oktober tog hans liv. Kaminsky var en av de stora i amerikansk kriminallitteratur. Han var utnämnd till Grand Master av MWA, och han fick 1989 en Edgar för 1988 bästa roman, A Cold Red Sunrise. Han fick ta emot flera priser och hedersutmärkelse under årens lopp, inte bara för sina kriminalhistorier, utan också för bl.a. essäer och biografier om välkända filmnamn som Clint Eastwood, John Houston, Don Siegel, Gary Cooper – samt Ingmar Bergman. Och Sara Paretsky dedicerade sin första Warshawski-roman till honom … Kaminsky debuterade med Bullet for a Star (1977), den första i en 24 titlar lång lovordad romansvit om Toby Peters, som är verksam som privatdetektiv i 1940-talets Hollywood. Senare introducerade Kaminsky flera andra ”seriefigurer”, däribland den sovjetiske polismannen Rostnikov, som gjorde entré i Rostnikov’s Corpse (1981; även som Death of a Dissident 1981), och som är huvudperson i ovan nämnda A Cold Red Sunrise. Så sent som i år kom Bright Futures, den sjätte romanen i en serie om Lew Fonesca.

LYFT PÅ DEERSTALKERN

Slutligen skall nämnas en av det sena 1900-talets främsta nordiska deckarskapare: Gunnar Staalesen från norska Bergen. Den 15 oktober firade han jubileum som författare: det är nämligen precis 40 år sedan han romandebuterade med Uskyldstider. Den är dock ingen kriminalhistoria, i deckarbranschen gjorde han romanentré först 1975 med Rygg i rand, to i spann, den första delen i en trilogi om polismännen Henrik Abel ”Dumbo” Olsen och Kristian ”Maskefjes” Jensen. Två år senare kom Bukken till havresekken som introducerade Varg Veum … and the rest is history, som man säger.

Krimalfabetet Å

Paperbacks krimalfabet har bara några få veckor kvar, idag har vi hunnit till bokstaven Å.

Återkomsten av Michael Connely är en Bosch-deckare, en okej sådan men inte den bästa. Han utreder något som ser ut som en maffiauppgörelse och lyckas göra sig ovän med både FBI och Las Vegas polisen.

Eftersom Åsa Larsson inte fick plats på L tänker jag skriva om henne nu istället. Hon är en av de bästa, svenska deckarförfattarna just nu tycker jag. Så mycket bättre än alla andra deckardrottningar och deckarkungar för den delen. Nu hoppas jag att det snart kommer en femte bok om Rebecka Martinsson.

Återkomsten heter också den tredje delen i Håkan Nessers serie om Van Veeteren som jag verkar ha missat. Den vill jag gärna läsa, men Barbarotti står nog först på kö!

Echo Park (read 10/28/09) recommended

LAPD Detective Harry Bosch didn’t like retirement and is back on the force, working in the open unsolved case unit and haunted by the unsolved murder of a young woman 13 years earlier. When the DA’s Office calls to say they have a confession to the murder, Harry is skeptical.

It’s a well-paced detective novel, with a likable but hard-boiled protagonist. I look forward to reading other novels by Michael Connelly.

Chasing The Dime (read 11/3/09) recommended

What a delightful read! This is a stand-alone mystery (not Harry Bosch) set in the bio-computing research field. Henry Pierce has a project coming close to fruition that will revolutionize the computer and pharmaceutical industries. His girlfriend having broken up with him, he moves into an apartment and discovers his new phone number is posted as a contact number in the internet ad of a prostitute. Instead of just having the number changed, he tries to contact the woman, learns that she’s been missing for several weeks and sets out to discover what happened to her.

I don’t want to say any more, because I don’t want to give anything away, but things get worse for poor Henry before they get better. It’s a terrific edge-of-your-seat story about family, friendship, trust and betrayal. I liked this even better than Echo Park.

Reichen-Bosch Falls

Maybe Michael Connelly has reached the point in his mystery book career at which he yearns to emulate his Vocational Ancestor, Arthur Conan Doyle who, sick of his money-making hero, Sherlock Holmes, opted to get rid of him altogether by dumping him (along with that Napoleon of Crime, Professor Moriarty) into the Reichenbach Falls.

Not that Connelly’s paycheck, Harry Bosch, sleeps the Big Sleep in this newest of the Bosch adventures, Nine Dragons. Or maybe he does. I’ll never know.

The first half of the book provided very effective distraction from the claustrophobic seating on my flight the other day from LA to NYC, and for that I am so very very grateful. It’s straight-up police procedural as age-defying Harry and his LAPD chums piece together itsy-bitsy clues (a glimpse of tattoo on a forearm in a security film; a bottle of booze NOT taken) to figure out what no-goodnik shot the kindly old Chinese liquor store owner. Good Bosch, good reading, a welcome diversion that kept me from going berserk in my tiny, last row window seat — crazy like the sailor in the submarine movie who snaps and tries to open the hatch while 500 feet under the surface. Nine Dragons helped me forget where I was. Thank you, Mr. Connelly.

But, O! That second half! Bosch, departing Los Angeles, the guided tour of which is at least half the reason to read Connelly, follows the trail to Hong Kong where, in defiance of Ronald Knox’s Fifth Commandment of Detective Fiction, he does battle with the Tongs of Hong Kong in the company of — get this — a faithful Chinese partner. O pity! Pity for Bosch, pity for Connelly, pity for myself and all other fans of the swell series — pity which barred further reading. I had enjoyed most of the other Bosch books too greatly to let this one besmirch their memory.

I left Nine Dragons, unfinished, lying on a desk in the Hotel Roger Williams on Madison Avenue and 31st Street, and — who knows — perhaps to this very day it lies there still.

Bouchercon Daydreams

All week, I’ve been reading reports about Bouchercon 2009, which took place last week in Indianapolis. (To my international readers: It’s an annual mystery convention held in a different U.S. city every year where fans can hobnob with writers.) The festivities sound like a blast (check out blogger Jen Forbus’s recap), making me really eager for next year’s B’con in San Francisco, which I plan on attending.
