Funny Games is an Austrian movie by writer/director Michael Haneke starring Susanne Lothar, Ulrich Mühe, Arno Frisch and Frank Giering which he then remade shot for shot ten years later with Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Michael Pitt and Brady Corbet.

Plot:
A well-off family travels to their weekend getaway at the shore of a lake. While the father Georg(e) [Ulrich Mühe/Tim Roth] and the son get the boat ready, the mother Ann(a) [Susanne Lothar/Naomi Watts] stays in the house to prepare dinner. Suddenly a young man, Peter, [Frank Giering/Brady Corbet] comes from the neighbour’s house to ask for some eggs. He’s joined by another young man, Paul, [Arno Frisch/Michael Pitt] and while both of them are very polite, things become threatening really quickly. When the father and the son return to the house, Peter and Paul take the whole family hostage to play “games” with them.

Both movies are heavy cost – a thorough and deep analysis of violence in movies and what it does to the viewer. Haneke uses the horror genre conventions to hammer home a point – and hammer it he does. This is no subtle pointer that maybe violence in movies is not such a good thing but a huge, blinking neon sign that screams about the depravity of the average movie consumer.

I watched both movies basically back to back (U.S. version first) because I was curious if I could find out how detailed a Haneke script is. Two things I have learned from this:

1: Don’t watch these two movies back to back if you are not completely stable and have either already lost all faith in humanity or have some magic formula to retain your faith. One of them is bad enough, but seeing the whole thing twice is soul shattering.

2: Haneke scripts are very detailed. But interestingly enough they detail other things than I would mention in a script of mine. For example, in the U.S. version pretty much everything’s white, not only the clothes of Peter and Paul, but also the complete interior design. So, as I’m personally a little obsessed with colour in movies, I figured this would have some significance. But in the Austrian version, only the two guys are dressed in white, the interior design isn’t. On the other hand, the entire layout of the house is completely identical – something I would have thought unnecessary.

After watching the first movie, I desperately needed a break. I felt like throwing up and crying. Just not knowing what to do first kept me from doing either. Seeing the second movie (sometimes I’m a mean bitch towards myself) was a little better. I don’t think it had anything to do with the quality of the films – honestly, all performances were great and other than that, nothing much had changed – but with knowing what to expect.

Because the thing about it is: Haneke doesn’t let the audience be an audience; he incorporates them into the film in the form of Paul. Paul, one of the perpetrators and the leader of the two, turns round in the middle of the film and winks at the viewer. I first I thought nothing much about it – it was a shock, being pulled out of the comfortable role for a second, but you quickly settle back into it.

And then Paul does it again. But this time, he talks to you, asks you about your expectations etc. And this time, you can’t just wave it away, can’t just pretend like nothing happened: you are forced to consider your own role in this. And you can feel the judgment, the nagging question: “Why would you watch such a movie in the first place?”

But the coup de grace is when Ann(a) manages to grab the gun and shoot Peter. Paul is thrown off for a second, searches for the remote control – and just hits the rewind button. The movie, obediently, rewinds.

Up until this point you might have still been able to kid yourself, but even the most unreflected movie goer surely most have felt the pressure Haneke built on the viewer at this point.

Because – or maybe despite – of this pressure, what I felt while watching the movie was not horror or even disgust, but desperation: Desperation that the family’s siuation was so completely chanceless, but even more desperation about us humans as a species who watch stuff like that as an entertainment [I'm not judging here, I watch these movies myself and I do enjoy them. (Even after Funny Games.)]. The conclusion of this film seems to be that we’re all completely fucked. [Which might be true, but do I really want to think about that?]

And Haneke manages to invoke all of this without showing us any act of violence directly. Contrary to what is usually the case, he only shows us the effects the violence has: The physical and emotional wounds.

So, if you want to be challenged – intellectually and as a movie goer - one of these two films will be perfect. Just make sure that you’re sufficiently anchored. But it’s definitely worth to give the movie a try and examine yourself in the course of it.

Una pareja(Tim Roth y naomi Watts)  junto a su hijo van a una casa en la playa para pasar unos dias de descanso, cuando dos jovenes de clase acomodada y aparentes buenos llegan para torturarlos física y sicológicamente en su propia casa, por el sólo gusto de hacerlo.

Versión americana de la película de 1997 de Michael Haneke, el mismo que dirige este remake, que  puede parecer interesante sólo si no se ha visto la original. ***

Michael Haneke es un director alemán que hizo una peli de ultraviolencia en 1997 con clara influencia de Stanley Kubrick y Alfred Hitchcock con un reparto completamente alemán del cual sólo puedo reconocer a Ulrich Mühe quien actuó en la impecable Das Leben der Anderen en 2006.

Recientemente, están rotando la versión americana en Cinemax y al parecer lo más interesante es que el director no cambió nada, igual que la distribuidora que hasta los cortos de avances de la peli los dejó idénticos. El escenario es una casa burguesa en las afueras, rodeadas por un lago y un ambiente calmado. Es de corte psicológico y de una profundidad actoral muy fuerte. En el reparto de esta versión se encuentra Michael Pitt que ya resuena como un monstruo de la actuación, Naomi Watts en una increíble y desgarradora actuación y Tim Roth. La trama es que dos jóvenes llegan a la casa donde se hospedan Roth, Watts y su hijo y empieza una cadena de torturas psicológicas que no tiene fin durante más de doce horas.

Hablabamos con un amigo y desde que Pitt le pide unos huevos a Roth, al principio de la peli, uno se estremece con el tono en el que le responde y se crea de ahí en adelante una tensión electrizante.

Es supremamente gráfica y violenta.
Es sencilla y estremecedora.
Es entretenida pero a la vez muy tensionante.

Es una pieza de teatro impecable y definitivamente recomendada para seguir analizando, una y otra vez, ya que logra involucrar al espectador en estos juegos mentales y dejarle la conciencia dañada después de ser testigo de esta interminable tortura. No es violencia por violencia, es el espacio dejado por Kubrick en los 70’s después de su A Clockwork Orange donde se critica la sociedad, la asimilación del crimen y la violencia de forma natural en nuestras vidas y la psique de los llamados civilizados.

Sería chévere repasar la versión de 1997 y reparar en paralelo las modificaciones, los actores y el final.

Kanneth Capello pode praticar muito, antes de tomar sua carreira “solo”, ele foi assistente do (grande)  David Lachapelle por algum tempo.

Eu super babo pela forma que ele fotografa. Seus trabalhos sempre transparecem naturalidade e diversao. Ele ja fez campanhas e ensaios para Nike, Adidas, Supreme, Diane Von Furstenberg, RocketDog , Dior Homme, iD, Dazed & Confused, GQ, entre outras.

Kenneth lancou, em parceria com o coletivo frances Surface to Air, um livro da grife Loveless ha algum tempo atras, se voces conferirem esse trabalho hoje em dia vao ver como o projeto ainda e  atual, as tendencias usadas naquela epoca continuam ate hoje. Isso me faz concluir que ele aprendeu muito com Lachapelle e tem muito pela frente com seu imenso talento.

Pericle Scalzone è un fallito che vive compiendo malefatte per un boss locale, tale Luigino Pizza, padrone di alcune pizzerie nei quartieri spagnoli di Napoli che il malvivente utilizza per lo spaccio di eroina e il riciclaggio di denaro sporco. Un giorno Pericle viene incaricato dal suo principale di dare una lezione al prete del rione, la cui colpa è quella di denunciare le malefatte del boss dal pulpito della sua chiesa. Pericle obbedisce ma c’è una testimone, Signorinella, la potente sorella di Don Ermenegildo Coppola, altro boss locale. Pericle tenta allora di uccidere quest’ultima e si trova incastrato in una situazione più grande di lui. Tutti gli vogliono fare la pelle: Don Luigino per farsi perdonare da Don Ermenegildo, quest’ultimo per vendicarsi dell’offesa subita. A Pericle non resta che scappare. Inizia un viaggio nell’entroterra italiano che lo porterà a Pescara. Qui incontrerà Nastasia, una donna polacca con due figli che lavora in una fabbrica di copertoni e con la quale instaurerà un rapporto, dapprima fatto solo di sesso, ma che in seguito si trasformerà in sentimento vero. Pericle l’animale diventerà uomo e acquisterà consapevolezza di sé attraverso il rifiuto delle regole del suo mondo.

Last Days es una peli dirigida por Gus Van Sant basado en el trágico final de Kurt Cobain. Fue lanzada en 2005 y además de esta promoción la peli fue reconocida en el mundo independiente siendo nominada dos veces en Cannes y un par más en otros festivales independientes.

Aparte de haber encontrado una estética súper agradable, contemplativa y hasta costumbrista, aparte de alcanzar una apariencia de un Cobain muy bien lograda por Michael Pitt, aparte de la dulce presencia de Asia Argento, aparte de Venus Furs de Velvet Underground, aparte de las interpretaciones musicales de Pitt y Lukas Haas, aparte de todo eso, no siento que esta peli me haya dejado una buena sensación. Son esporádicas chispas de lo que pudo ser.

Gus Van Sant es un director complicado, que no asimilo bien cuando se pone en ese plan esnobista y contemplativo. Es casi como si quisiera emular el neoexpresionismo alemán pero no lo lograra. Es como si quisiera decir muchas cosas pero no lo lograra. Es como si debiera tener estos valles para impulsarse y sacar otras pelis de mejor factura. Respeto eso si el nivel de angustia que alcanza a transmitir al público con la existencia de este ser aislado de toda realidad pero no siento que haya una conexión con el final que es tan fortuito, que no parece creíble, que no parece conclusivo, que no parece consecuente con el resto de la peli.

Esperaba mucho más y me pasa frecuentemente con Gus Van Sant, termino esperando algo que no llega.

I absolutely adore this film. I’m a big Sandra Bullock fan and it’s lovely to see her in something that isn’t a comedy. Murder By Numbers is a mind-fuck of a film in which two bored teenagers attempt to commit the perfect murder. However, they don’t count on interference by homicide cop Cassie Mayweather and her partner Sam (nice to see Ben Chaplin again). Cassie (Bullock) was once nearly left for dead by her husband and therefore, is very serious about catching the killers. In Richard (Gosling) and Justin’s (Pitt) planning the perfect murder, they forget that planning itself can be a mistake and a set of inncoulous mistakes lead Cassie and Sam to them. The problem then is that Richard and Justin are so wrapped up in the ideals of freedom (i.e. commiting crimes and getting away with it) that they start to turn on each other and Cassie gets caught up in the middle. The film is, to a certain degree, badly plotted, messy and obvious in places but the interesting relationship between Cassie, Sam, Justin and Richard does a way to making up for it.

The Dreamers (2003)

Dovrebbe bastare dire questo di The Dreamers, il nome del regista, e chi ne capisce qualcosa di cinema saprebbe che vale la pena di vederlo. Perché questo non è un film qualunque, di un regista qualunque e le critiche feroci lo dimostrano. Bernardo Bertolucci è un maestro del cinema, Dario Argento lo ha definito il più grande regista italiano vivente.

The Dreamers, basato su un racconto di Gilbert Adari, The Holy Innocents, è uscito nelle sale nel 2003 e racconta la storia di Matthew (Michael Pitt), giovane studente americano che giunge a Parigi all’alba del 1968 e delle proteste studentesche. Incapace di socializzare con i ragazzi del posto, Matthew passa le sue ore alla Cinémathèque française. Ben presto la crescente protesta travolge anche i cinema e la Cinémathèque viene occupata dagli studenti e dai cinefili. È in questa occasione che Matthew conosce Isabelle (Eva Green) e Theo (Louis Garrel), fratelli gemelli. I tre stringono ben presto amicizia, e dopo la partenza per le vacanze dei genitori dei due fratelli, Matthew viene invitato a vivere nella loro casa. Rinchiusi nelle grandi e deserte stanze dell’appartamento i tre ragazzi vivono immersi in un mondo fatto di cinema, poesia e musica. Vivendo con loro Matthew scopre l’immensa intimità di Theo ed Isabelle, che va oltre i normali rapporti che intercorrono fra un fratello e una sorella. I due vivono infatti in simbiosi, incapaci di vivere divisi e Matthew non può che sentirsi, nonostante il forte contatto, qualcosa di estraneo a quel legame. Nonostante tutto sboccia l’amore fra Matthew e Isabelle e la storia assume un ritmo vertiginoso, fatto di scommesse, giochi perversi, in cui i ragazzi vivono isolati dal mondo reale e da una Parigi ormai sconvolta dalla contestazione. Il ritorno brusco alla realtà avverrà proprio durante un corteo a cui prendono parte, in cui Matthew capirà definitivamente di non poter fare parte della vita dei gemelli, incapace di sostenere il loro legame esclusivo.

Come già ho scritto sopra Bertolucci è un maestro del cinema e lo dimostra anche in questo film, per la sua eccezionale capacità di ricerca di dettagli e per la scelta delle citazioni cinematografiche, dalla corsa dentro il Louvre, tratta da Bande a Part di Jean-Luc Godard alla scena in cui Isabelle recita Venere Bionda, passando per Scarface, Cappello a cilindro, Luci della città e Freaks.

La musica, i dettagli storici, l’iconografia è volontariamente ricercata e legata allo stesso periodo in cui è ambientata la storia.

Quando precedentemente ho parlato di critiche feroci, mi riferivo a quelle emerse in merito alle esplicite scene erotiche che compaiono nel film. A difesa credo che Bertolucci giri queste scene in modo raffinato ed elegante in confronto alla volgarità di tanti altri registi. Ad esempio la scena in cui Eva Green si “traveste” da Venere di Milo credo sia di una bellezza che raramente si vede al cinema di questi tempi.

Io non credo in Dio, ma se ci credessi sarebbe un chitarrista nero e mancino… (Matthew parlando di Jimmy Hendrix).

Familjen anländer till sitt sommarhus för en avkopplande tid med lantliv och segling. Men bara efter en litet tag knackar det på dörren och innan de vet ordet av har två propert vitklädda unga män (Michael Pitt och Brady Corbet) tagit över deras hem och slår vad om att tolv timmar senare ska hela familjen vara död. Detta är en remake av en österrikisk film med samma namn från 1997 och regissör till båda filmerna är Michael Haneke.

Man driver rätt skickligt med oss som åskådare då man sitter och förväntar sig en traditionell vändning då de unga och extremt obehagliga psykopaterna ska få tillbaka med samma mynt. Just att filmen är så normbrytande gör den än mer otäck och oberäknelig. Det faktum att man väljer att inte visa det råa våldet som istället utspelar sig utanför bild, gör att ens fantasi istället får arbeta och detta kan vara bra mycket effektivare än de utstuderade våldskildringar som man är mer eller mindre van vid. De tysta långa tagningarna känns grymt plågsamma och man lider verkligen med den utsatta familjen där föräldrarna spelas av Naomi Watts och Tim Roth. Vid några tillfällen leker man även med filmens form och oss som åskådare, vilket man kan tycka olika om. Personligen är jag lite kluven då jag till viss del applåderar lekfullheten, men blir å andra sidan lite irriterad då jag luras på det jag sitter och väntar på. Mer intressant än bra.

Se ha confirmado que HBO ha ordenado once episodios adicionales del piloto creado por Martin Scorsese, Boardwalk Empire.

El proyecto, que había sido uno de los más comentados de la temporada, tuvo un inusualmente largo período de producción. Estuvo fue probablemente motivado por los costos que implicaría para HBO hacer una reconstrucción del período entre 1920 y 1930 que es centro de la historia.

Protagonizado por Steve Buscemi y Michael Pitt, Boardwalk Empire nos cuenta la historia de Nucky Thompson (Buscemi) quien se destaco tanto en la política como el crimen convirtiéndose así en el amo y señor de Atlantic City durante los días de la prohibición.

El propio Scorsese dirigió el piloto de la serie y actuará como productor ejecutivo del show. Esto no descarta que regrese eventualmente a dirigir nuevos capítulos si su apretada agenda se lo permite.

Boardwalk Empire se estrenará a partir del 2010.

Michael Hanekes Original “Funny Games(1997)” was originally intented for the American and european audience but it did not manage to be succesufull in the US and UK. Haneke was asked to make a remake of the original and he agreed as long as he could get Naomi Watts to play the main role.

The 2007 US version of funny games is not just a remake but an exact replica of the original one. All the scenes are identical to the original Austrian version of the movie. Tim Roth and Naomi Watts performances are really good however not as good as Michael Pitts perfomance. The movie is about a middle class couple that end up gettin their summer house invaded by two young strangers who force the family to participate in a number of sadistic games in order to stay alive.

This films is probably the most disturbing film i have ever seen in my life but at the same time it’s got a twisted funny side to it.When i say disturbing i dont mean that its has goory scenes and a lot of physical violence as you dont even see a lot of violence in the movie. You need to see this movie!Its one of my favourite movies.In fact watch both versions and maybe drop me a line and tell me which one you prefer?

mi è capitato di avere qualche ora da buttare (anche se credevo di “investirla”) e l’ho fatto guardando “Funny games”.  Quasi due ore buttate via, sul serio. Il film è un remake “shot for shot” (scena per scena), vale a dire che il furbo regista che ha girato il primo Funny games nel 1997, ha avuto la fastidiosa pensata di girare il film allo stesso modo, scena per scena, solo con attori diversi. Siamo alle solite: si gira un film in un paese poco famoso per il cinema (nel caso specifico, l’Austria) e non cogliendone i frutti si pensa di rigirarlo in America, con cast quotati e pubblicità di sensazione. La tattica pubblicitaria di richiamare un film molto famoso come Arancia meccanica, di Stanley Kubrick, funziona. Purtroppo basta ingaggiare una sempre eccellente attrice come Naomi Watts, un ottimo Tim Roth e un atrettanto bravo Michael Pitt, fare una massiccia pubblicità sulla violenza presente nel film, e il gioco è fatto. Successo assicurato per un film che vi sconsiglio caldamente. Per chi ama i thriller (anche se è più da considerarsi un horror) e la sensazione di angoscia che certe situazoni inevitabilmente suscitano nello spettatore, forse questo film può avere qualcosa di buono, ma disgusta per l’assenza di un qualunque tipo di messaggio utile. Per intenderci, stiamo parlando di un film che racconta (e in modo molto poco realistico per molti versi) il sequestro di una famiglia composta da tre persone da parte di due ragazzotti chiaramente molto disturbati. Insomma, lo psicopatico di buona famiglia e dalla faccia pulita vorrebbe forse essere una brutta ironia fatta dal regista (Michael Haneke) nei confronti del cinema violento e dello stupro dello spettatore. Tutto questo, se volete dare retta alle critiche e alle spiegazioni del film a posteriori. Insomma, si può dire qualsiasi cosa sul significato di un film, purché sia davvero percepibile dallo spettatore e non rimanga solo un parere buttato lì da chi vuole vendere la pellicola e fare soldi in modo intellettualmente poco onesto. Tirando le somme: regia pessima, caratterizzata da brutte inquadrature e pessimi tempi, storia già vista e mal proposta, ricca di situazioni poco realistiche e inutilmente angoscianti, scene non comprensibili che fanno storcere il naso. Solo gli attori si salvano, ma come cerco sempre di sottolineare, non basta il cast a fare un buon film. Se tenete al mio consiglio, guardate un bel film, qualcosa come una pellicola di Chaplin o una delle meraviglie di Almodovar. Quello che posso consigliare, in linea generale, è di non farsi ingannare dalla pubblicità, di non cadere nella trappola del buon cast scegliendo un film in base a quanti soldi sono stati spesi per pagare gli attori bravi sperando che con le loro capacità sopperiscano alla scarsità del film. Insomma, se una persona non vi colpisce per i contenuti dei suoi discorsi, non vi colpirà allo stesso modo se li esprimerà avendo addosso un vestito più bello e costoso. La confezione non influisce sul contenuto, o almeno così dovrebbe essere. Per me, comunque, è così. In ogni caso, se siete del club “devo vedere con i miei occhi e giudicare da solo”, vi capisco e vi consolo come consolo me stessa dopo aver visto film come Funny games. Mi dico: tutto quello che nella vita non mi piace, mi serve ad apprezzare di più quello che mi piace. I termini di paragone sono essenziali per farci vedere il mondo dalla giusta prospettiva. Come sempre, qualunque film scegliate di vedere, buona visione!

Je vous parlais hier du livre “Soie”, d’Alessandro Barrico (éd. Albin Michel). Eh bien le film “Soie”, de François Girard, sort le 5 août prochain, avec Sei Ashina, Keira Knightley et Michael Pitt.

Au tout début des années 1860, une maladie ravage les élevages européens de vers à soie, et le commerce entier semble condamné.

Hervé Joncour (Michael Pitt), un jeune officier marié à une femme dévouée, Hélène (Keira Knightley), est chargé d’une périlleuse mission : il doit se rendre en secret au Japon, l’île fermée aux étrangers qui produit la plus belle soie du monde, pour y acheter des oeufs sains.

Pour atteindre cette terre au bout du monde, Joncour va traverser toute l’Europe. D’aventures en tempêtes, des contrées glacées de l’Est à un bateau de contrebandiers, il finit par être conduit sur l’île interdite, les yeux bandés, au coeur des montagnes enneigées de Fukushima.

C’est là qu’il rencontrera Hara Jubei (Koji Yakusho), le seigneur local aussi puissant que redouté, et son envoûtante concubine. Sans savoir un mot de la langue de l’autre, il va se tisser entre Joncour et la mystérieuse femme un amour obsédant et aussi impalpable que la précieuse étoffe…

Delirious (2006)

“Delirious,” written and directed by Tom DiCillo, is a satire about paparazzis, tabloids and celebrities. Although it had a certain bite from time to time, it lost its way somewhere in the middle only to find its core once again toward the end. I really enjoyed watching Steve Buscemi as a photographer who wants to prove to everybody that he’s the best as what he does. There was a brilliant scene when he visited his parents’ house and neither the mom nor the dad approved of his job. Although Buscemi is convinced that what he does is art, that void inside him is never really filled because he always wants somebody (regardless of their overall importance) to tell him that he’s doing a great job. When no one feeds his ego, he goes off on rather amusing temper tantrums yet still retain a certain sadness to his situation. I also really liked Michael Pitt as an initially homeless aspiring actor who Buscemi takes under his wing and eventually rises to superstardom. Even though he eventually gains a status among celebrities and the media, he remains true to himself and that was nice to see. In most movies, characters like him get corrupted so it’s refreshing to see that change. As tension rises between Buscemi and Pitt, (Buscemi’s character declares that Pitt’s character is ungrateful for all the things he’s done when Pitt was homeless–completely unaware to the fact that he’s been nothing but a jerk/parasite) themes such as jealousy, envy, self-reflection and companionship are explored in meaningful ways. My problem with this picture is that a scene is either really good and focused or it’s really irrelevant to the overall scope of what it’s trying to satirize. If DiCillo had tweaked the middle portion a bit more (such as minimizing the “love” aspect between Pitt and Alison Lohman which felt superficial at most), this would’ve easily been a solid film. Still, this is an interesting movie with funny cameos and interesting subject matter. It’s not that I didn’t like it–I just think that it could’ve been a lot stronger with its smart script and talented actors.
