Another first from the Obama White House Kitchen…First Lady reveals “secret ingredient“

Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford will compete on the show in a special two hour “super chef battle.” Comerford’s teammate is grill master Bobby Flay, who guest-cheffed at the White House for the Father’s Day event in June, when he cooked up some lovely steaks with President Obama. Spoiler alert: Mrs. Obama will be revealing the “secret ingredient” that the chefs will use in their televised cook-off, which is a hallmark of the Iron Chef America series. The “secret ingredient” in this case is anything that grows in the White House Kitchen Garden, which leaves things wiiiide open, because the Kitchen Garden has produced a stunning variety of crops this year. Comerford and Flay are competing against the highly competitive team of celeb chefs Emeril Lagasse, who specializes in Southern/New Orleans cooking, and Mario Batali, an Italian cooking superstar.

In her onscreen cameo, Mrs. Obama will discuss her campaign to reduce childhood obesity through better school lunches, community gardens, farmers’ markets and exercise, which is now known as the Healthy Kids Initiative around the White House. The show’s January air-date is timed perfectly to be right before Congress comes back into session, when legislators will ostensibly be addressing the re-authorization of the Child Nutrition Act, which provides federal funding for school feeding programs. Better school lunches are one of Mrs. Obama’s priorities, and President Obama’s too; Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack frequently notes in his public remarks that this was the very first subject President Obama discussed with him during their “job interview.”

This post contains potentially triggering content regarding rape and molestation. Please take care when reading it.

Let me start by saying that we did not remember a lot of the abuse until just these past few years. We did start having some recall in 2005 but when we look back now, those memories were fairly sketchy compared to some of the very vivid, down-to-the-details memories we’ve had in the past 2.75-ish years. Not that all of the memories are so very clear, mind you. Some are pretty vague, even simply a sense of something that happened. We remember some parts of a day or incident in what we think is its entirety and then are blown away when a key detail makes itself known. And that is what happened with The Most Wonderful Christmas That Really Wasn’t. And I don’t think Christmas will ever be quite the same…

I remember a certain Christmas quite well, the year I was 12 years old and in the 6th grade. For years I’ve had distinct memories of that Christmas, far more than nearly any other Christmas. I always wondered why that year stuck out for me so much more and always thought it was because of the way I was remembering it.

Christmas Eve 1980 was thrilling to me. Three gifts I received that night were particularly fantastic: pink footied blanket sleeper jammies, a soft sleeping bag, and my very own clock radio. There were other gifts that night, of course, but these have always stood out in my mind. When other family went home and it was time for us kids to go to bed, I was so excited. I can see it as clear as a photograph in my head: being in my new jammies, snuggled in the sleeping bag on the floor, clock radio near my pillow tuned to a station that was playing all Christmas music. I remember being so excited about Santa gifts in the morning, even though I knew it was really The Father and his wife putting them out–I even listened to them get them out of the den, which was right next to my room. It was all just so exciting, and life felt happy.

That is what I remembered until earlier this year. The memory stopped with the night being happy and exciting. Then one day this year, I was hit by a ton of bricks. The night didn’t end with me being happy and excited, drifting off to sleep in my neat new jammies on the floor in my sleeping bag, listening to Christmas carols. The night continued with The Father’s wife going to bed (downstairs and all the way across the house from my room). The night continued with The Father coming into the room. Thinking about it now, I don’t believe I thought he’d come in that night. Everything was so nice and wonderful, and it was late, and everyone would be up early in the morning to see what Santa had brought…

But he did come in. He came into my room and closed the door behind him like he always did. He asked me if I liked my presents. No more excitement, no more joy, no more happiness, only the terror of knowing what would happen. Knowing that the neat pink jammies would be, at the least, unzipped and his hands would be in places where they had no business being. Which is what did happen, of course. The pajamas were unzipped, the pajamas were removed. The sleeping bag was zipped open. Zip, zip, zip, I can hear the sounds of the different zippers. Pajama zipper, sleeping bag zipper, his jeans zipper. The pajamas made me look cute but covered too much, were too restricting for him.

And then the inevitable taking of me. The taking of the joy and excitement of the night. The taking of the wonderful novelty of such neat pajamas. The taking of the fun of having a sleeping bag and being able to “camp out” on the floor. The taking of the coolness of having my own clock radio to listen to and make me more grown up. The taking of Christmas. The taking of faith–how could something like this happen on the birthday of the one who loved everyone so much and supposedly made the world so much better?

The past 18 months or so have been filled with redefining. Redefining daily life. Redefining family. Redefining my birthday. Redefining who I am and figuring out who this system is made up of. Redefining pretty much every aspect of my life. And this year there will be even further redefining of Christmas. There are more memories to consider–but there are also more victories. And I–we–continue to work out the kinks in life and make it all work for us, so we can finally have The Most Wonderful Christmas That Really Was.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend! I have a lot of stuff to post from Detroit, so let’s get it started, shall we? I had a great time back in my hometown with my friends and family, and as you can see from the above photo, we had some really yummy treats!

On Friday night we had a dessert party at my mom’s house. I had brought goodies from New York: cupcakes from Butter Lane and a cheesecake from Junior’s. The best part was I didn’t even tell anyone what I was bringing so when I got off the plane with my Junior’s bag, my mom was like, “Ye-ah!” It’s her fave.

My best friend Michelle made this awesome cookie cake (above) from this recipe I had seen online and passed along to her saying, “Please, please, please!” I was thrilled that she actually made it and it was my favorite thing I tried. She made the whipped cream from scratch and it was delicious! My cousin M brought in a giant mocha cake, truffles, and Candy Cane Joe Joe’s (oreos) from Trader Joe’s.

Here’s some of the spread and here is Michelli trying to sneak some frosting from the mocha cake:

Cupcakes:

Look at the concentration here:

And here’s little B and her big cake:

After everyone had enough sugar to last us the entire week, we gathered around the kitchen table for story time with R:

Good times, good times. And geesh, after looking at all these pictures, who wants to go take a run in Prospect Park? Or, you know, just take a nap.

Hello everyone

This is the very first installment of the Sexy List!

I love to inspire people and share my thoughts and ideas. So here’s what I’m madly in love with this week! There’s one for all seven days. :]

I wish I knew who this was so I could give them the deserved credit!

Cotton candy hair rules!

If you’re not so into this look maybe get temporary dye if your hair is light enough or colored hairspray (it comes out in one wash). Hot Topic has come awesome temporary dye. You can find the colored hairspray for the cheapest price at a party or costume store.

The picture said "vegan cupcake" when I found it. Now I really want to go try one...yummy...

Cupcakes! They just taste like cake to me but they’re SO adorable. They fit almost every occasion too. I couldn’t forget to mention how fun they are to make! How do you eat yours? Icing first??

This beautiful picture was taken by RayLeah of DeviantART. Be sure to visit her page: RayLeah.DeviantART.com She's very talented!

Glitter will always be on my personal Sexy List. I’m forever in love with glitz and glamour! If you’re not really into bright, loud makeup, maybe try a very sheer eyeshadow with small sparkles. Also, a sheer gold sparkle brightens up and flatters all eye colors. Whenever you want to dress up a look or add a pretty piece, one with glitter is totally ideal! Try a sparkly bow (as big or small as you like!) or an oversized glittery ring.

I'm a huge fan of techno music!

Glow sticks!!

I really have no excuse for this one. I just love them! If it’s neon then I will love it. I heard putting them in the freezer will make them last longer (that’s probably common knowledge but I’m just now learning that haha!).

I saw them on Warped Tour this summer. MAN were they awesome! First row baby (I thought my ribs were going to break)!

Haha I’m sure most people will disagree with me on this one. This is one of my favorite bands. They’re songs and shows are insanely energetic!

I have this one on my wall! (Without the words of course) I got it for only 99 cents! :O

My favorite artist is quickly becoming Simon Basher. His pieces are so interesting and colorful! I encourage you gorgeous readers to check out his gallery at BasherWorld.com. He has many things up so I’m sure you’ll find a piece you like. Simon Basher is from the United Kingdom. The picture I posted is called Banged My Bloody Head (U.K. lingo!! I love that!). His art reminds me almost of the famous Pon and Zi characters people went nuts over two years ago. His are brighter and more crazy though. Haha!

MooshiBots crack me up! Go to Google and type in "wanna plug?" and you'll find them.

I love robots! Whether they’re cute and cartoon-y or the real life ones they’re awesome! I love watching those competitions in Japan where they build a robot and then the robots fight each other. If I made a robot I’d be sad for it to get wounded. Those kids are real troopers.

Well that ends the Sexy List for this week. I’m happy to share with you dears!

xoxo,

LeeLovely

P.S. What things are you crazy about this week?

I am currently on yet another Skype call with Michelle and Zach. It feels like summer and I’m pretty sure Zach just said, “And I sung my heart out for you,” to Michelle. And Zach and I are the married couple? Pshhh. It is silent. I am pretty sure I should say something.
“Your typing is so scary.” Zach says.
“Heyyyyy,” I said.
And then the conversation changed to the underground railroad.

I think I am going to use this second (or third, really, because I still have that secret blog… and no, you can’t have the link ) blog more often. To post little quippy updates that I don’t have to worry about sounding like masterpieces or spend a lot of time perfecting. I think that it’ll be fun.

We are talking about colleges right now, and I find that I love having this intelligent conversation with these smart people. I need to have more conversations like these. I also need to ignore the clock as it’s 3:03am and tomorrow I’m getting up early (well, kind of early, like 10 am, because I have to shower and go shop for paint with my mom) but this is really fun.

Zach keeps insulting my typing. He says that he thinks I am pounding on the keyboard. I want to tell him that I’m going to give him a pound on the head. Aren’t I sweet?

I am going to start typing again and see if Zach makes a comment. So far, so good. In other news, I find it amazing that I wrote an entire novel in the month of November. I mean, it’s not done yet, but it’s pretty close and I feel really proud.

I am exhausted. Tomorrow is Sunday, and I have a feeling that it’ll be good. G’night, third blog.

Obama held his first state dinner on Tuesday, and the President invited a few gays.

Included on the list were:

David Geffin and his partner, Jeremy Lingvall

Urvashi Vidal and her partner Kate Clinton

Chris Hughes and his partner, Sean Eldridge

Fred Hochberg and his partner, Thomas Healy

But the only thing better than being invited to the state dinner is getting to sit next to First Lady Michelle Obama, and that is exactly what David Geffen, media billionaire, got to do. Geffen is the bald man on the right.

Geffen, 66, received a lot of flack for supporting Obama, and defying Hollywood’s commitment to Hillary Clinton. When asked if Obama could defeat Clinton, Geffen said in February 2008, “I hope so, because that machine is going to be very unpleasant and unattractive, and effective.” — Thank you David for helping me validate my senior thesis.

Above is a picture of Geffen’s boyfriend, age 26, – you know, in case you were wondering what his type is. Apparently, he and I have a few friends in common on Facebook….

Personally, I’m still holding out for Chris Hughes.

Hello World! Hey! How ya doing!?
Today is Thanksgiving! Happy Turkey Day! I want to thank all my Native American chiefs and the Pilgrims for giving us such a wonderful holiday. I hope everyone stuffs their mouths with a lot of turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry, corn, etc. Mmmmmmm Yum! Well, since today is such a blissful day, I will enter your minds’ with a jubilant post.

Every school has that one class that every single student takes during one of their semesters because it is extremely easy and exciting. For Syracuse University, it is Human Sexuality. Once a week, you attend a lecture and the professor either puts up slides of body parts or brings in homosexual/transsexual speakers. The class is thrilling because we always see something that we have never seen before. Two weeks ago, the professor put up photographs of extremely hairy vagina’s and funky penises. Those pictures had me cringing in my seat like a Kindergartner looking at body parts for the first time! The class used to use the same exam every year so everyone would get an automatic A. However, they finally decided to change it but it is still quite easy. Finally, for a large portion of the grade, every student must either write an essay, attend a discussion every week, or attend six couple enrichment sessions if the student possesses a girlfriend/boyfriend. So what do you think I did? Hell yea babyyyyy. I do have a girlfriend. ;]

Let me take a quick moment to introduce her. Michelle Jeon loves to eat; she often brags that she can devour up to six plates of food at the dining hall. She also loves to take pictures and has an extraordinary talent in which she can look exactly the same in every single photograph. She is a very passionate girl who works fairly hard at what she wants (except weight loss) and is a girl of many thoughts. She is different from what she appears as and I’m glad that I saw it. And um… I can go into detail about all the other important traits and qualities of her but that’s only for me to know =). Also, I was just kidding; she really is not fat at all. She is very good at being a girlfriend and should minor in it!

So here are the adventures of our couple enrichment sessions. We were able to shrink six sessions into four by making each one longer. You are lucky I am sharing!

Session 1:

Honestly, I was scared. Michelle was too. We had heard many rumors that couples would often break up because of these sessions. So with this terrified mindset, we both walked into our first session. The first day was slow. The activities were not very fun and Michelle refused to talk because she was nervous… Therefore, we had to rely on my smooth mouth. We had two counselors, Monica and Natasha: We were Monica’s last couple while also being Natasha’s first couple! So anyway, our first activity was a questionnaire. Michelle and I had to sit in a tiny room and answer questions about our relationship while the counselors waited outside; we had to circle a number from one to ten (Disagree-Agree) on questions like “Will you and your partner get married?” Sounds boring huh? It kind of was. We then proceeded to ‘Emotional Jenga’, which was a little bit more fun. Basically, it is the same as regular Jenga but under some of the blocks are adjectives that we would have to connect with our love life. So for example, if the word was “jealous,” whoever pulled it out would have to tell the significant other of a time when he/she was jealous in the relationship. What went on during the game will stay enclosed. It is a life between us two and it should stay like that. Don’t you think? But I did tell her that I will keep her safe forever when I pulled out “Safety.” Hehe.

Session 2:

This day was probably my favorite. By the way, we were in a larger room! Also, Michelle started to talk because she was now comfortable so it made our experience better. So when we walked in and settled down, the counselors whipped out a sandbox filled with sand. Then they also opened up three closets overflowing with toys. Our assignment was to use the toys to describe our relationship in the present, in the future, and how we view family. So we brainstormed together and built what was on our minds on the sandbox. The counselors took a picture of each situation but we liked the “Our relationship in the present” model the best so the counselors printed out a picture of that for us. Even though it is a bit embarrasing to say with my own mouth, I think the whole process was very cute; we tried really hard while giggling to closely translate whatever was in our brain to the sandbox. Our end product was this picture:

Michelle chose the treasure chest to portray that she treasures our relationship. She also decided that two little dogs would represent us and put us on a bridge to resemble that we will always be able to come together no matter the situation. I told her I should be a lion but she would not listen…She also picked two clay models, one with open arms and another crying, to say that we would always welcome each other with open arms at times of difficulty. I truly appreciated everything she did on that sandbox =). The first thing I did was place a snake and two devils under the bridge. From this, I tried to say that we would be able to be together even if there are obstacles. Then I placed a globe and made two soldiers point their guns at it. This means that we would be able to fight the world together and whatever it throws at us. The fire displays our love which will always be burning. The two empty books means that we will both write and live a beautiful story with each other. (It was really cute when Michelle placed just one book later on for the “Our relationship in the future” model and said that our life stories will become one). The open shell facing up means that we will always open up to each other without hesitation. On the other hand, the Spongebob hints that we will also be a joking couple in order to have fun at times. Finally, the genie means that I will try and fulfill all her wishes. Honestly speaking, when else would 19 year old college students play on a sandbox with toys? However, it was a very bonding activity and I hope others can experience it. I came to the conclusion that corny exercises help a lot in relationship building. Plus, if you are with the person you appreciate, everything should be fun.

Session 3:

We started off by drawing our family trees. This activity was good because we learned a lot about each others families. Obviously. One thing that I can tell you guys is that her family does not own a pet. On the other hand guys, I hope all you readers know about Yodi! Anyway, while I was figuring out my family tree, I realized that I did not know many names and ages of people in my family. But please forgive me, my mother has eight siblings. Somehow, I finished it and it was pretty accurate. As you can see, mine (top) is far more complicated than her family tree.

The activity that came after was probably the most meaningful activity out of everything. The counselors gave us blank white papers and told us to decorate a border. After we had borders, they told us to write each other a compliment. I told her that her smile brightens up my day and that all my stress goes away for a moment, and more. We then had to make another border and had to write each other a secret. I told her about a time in my life when I completely changed from a shy boy who had no friends to a confident young adult doing everything right. A story that may seem cliche, but how music saved my life (I will probably write about this in a future entry). It is a point in my life that not many know about, not even my parents. Anyway, with these two activities finished, we were dismissed. While walking out, Michelle and I told each other how happy these sessions make us; we would always walk out extremely joyful every time.

Session 4 (Last):

The last session =(. Although these sessions take up precious free time every Tuesday, I was really sad that it was soon ending. I liked it because I had fun but also because I knew that it made Michelle happy. Anyway, Michelle was in a bad mood this day; she felt sick and was feeling down because coffee sometimes does that to her. And to make everything better, one of the counselors (the fun and experienced one) was late. So we were stuck with an inexperience counselor working by herself which made it a bit boring. Our first activity was to draw a flower and write inside the pedals things that have changed within our relationship because of the sessions and what we should still fix. During this activity, Michelle was being very difficult: she sat down and did not do anything. LOL. Since I am such a nice guy and since I knew she was not feeling well, I did the whole activity by myself and acted as if nothing was wrong in front of the counselors. I made it seem like Michelle was contributing so that the counselors would not suspect anything.

After much hard work, we started the second activity. It was a game to find out how well we know each other. So for example, when the counselor said “favorite food” we would write our own answer on the bottom and what we thought the other person’s favorite food was on top. If you got it right, you would get a point. Another question was “What would you miss the most if you guys were long distance?” We both put “Everything.” You know what it is. Finally, when all the questions were asked, Michelle had more points than me and I had to give her a prize. She wanted me to make her dinner so I will have to do this once in the near future.

I am so glad I got a chance to attend these sessions. It was an opportunity in which Michelle and I were able to grow as a couple. We were able to look into what may happen in the future, how we could become a better couple, and learn stuff about each other that we did not know of. I really recommend couple enrichment to every couple, especially if you go to Syracuse University. I thank our counselors for leading us and hsowing us a great time. I asked them “Why did we have so much fun when other couples say it was intense and often break up?” They responded “We went easy on you. We sensed that you guy are really healthy and had no problems to bring up. You deserved to have a great time.” Michelle and I bought them chocolate and handed them a card each. They told us we were the first to ever do that. We ended our last session with a group hug. <3

Popular teen-themed channel 4 television show Skins is due to begin broadcasting its fourth series in January 2010. The show, which began broadcasting on digital station E4 in 2007, has built up a large number of devoted fans. Every two years the cast is replaced with a new set of core characters. About A Boy star Nicholas Hoult starred in the first series as Tony Stonem. The new series will be the last featuring the current cast, which includes Kaya Scodelario as Effy Stonem. There will be eight episodes in the new series. The show is also a hit in the states where an American version, set in Baltimore, is currently in development. A big screen version may also soon be made as it was announced, in May 2009, that Film4 and Skins production company, Company Pictures, are in preliminary talks about producing one. I’m looking forward to the new series and will be disappointed if it proves to be the last one they make. Thanks for reading.

Wonder what you would find if you frisked Oprah’s Christmas Special?

Answer: More of the Obamas!

Yay! How excited are we all? After all, we never get to see the Messiah on the television anymore… Wait a minute?

There’s nothing like another Obama media blitz to welcome the holiday season:

The queen of daytime will interview the president of the country during an ABC holiday special that brings together Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama.

Make sure you mark this on your calendar folks! Oprah’s “Christmas at the White House” will air Sunday, December 13, at 10 p.m.

I sure hope he brings his teleprompter along for the show to help answer those REALLY tough questions that will be thrown his way like:

“Michelle, which of your 26 personal assistants is your favorite?”

“How’s your dog?”

“Now that you have saved the economy, what Bush caused disaster will you fix next?”

I can see how the show will play out now…

Side-Note: Is there any hope that the Obamas will beat the ratings that Sarah Palin gave The Oprah Show? I highly doubt it.

Woah at Minzy’s dance. She is like my new female dance role model. I swear. Damn good popping.

Woah at Minzy’s dance. She is like my new female dance role model. I swear. Damn good popping.

But I’m still more interested in locking than popping. Heh. I’m like almost the complete oppposite of what Ally Pee likes. She likes the soulful, popping side. I like the bboy and locking ones. Exactly what she detests. BUT I REALLY LOVE BGIRL-ING! I swear! I mean, if you know me since like what? Secondary 3? I was so keen on doing bgirling. But up till now, I’m still not able to get enough courage to stay up on a handstand for long. =/

But today’s dance camp is awesome ‘cos there were a lot more bonding and a lot more dancing. Popping isn’t really my kind of thing ‘cos I can’t seem to control my muscles well enough to pop. =( I really need to work on that since Justis is really fond of popping and Minzy can like freaking pop so well? BUT BGIRL TODAY IS THE MOST AWSM THING!! We over shot by what? 2 hours? So we technically had like 4 hours of bgirling. It’s so much that towards the end, I totally felt my arms numb. Okay not really numb but more of nua. Very weak. But I managed to learn baby freeze on the left side (I’m a right hander) and shoulder freeze and I learnt how to recover from both freezes the seh way. SUPA PROUD OF MYSELF!! I’m so going to master the going up the seh way. But that’s going to require a lot of body strength and confidence from me. BUT I’M STILL GOING TO DO IT! (Note to self: Short-term goal before doing handstand)

Anyway, I have a lot of pictures from today’s events. But I’m too lazy and tired to edit them before posting them up. Plus, I have scandalous pictures of a closet drag-queen from D’MVMT! I kind of promised him not to disclose them on the internet. At least private them. The D’MVMT’s next top model is quite a success ‘cos role-playing and dressing up is always fun. Haha. We had a lot of hidden gems within D’MVMT. Shall update with everything when I’m done with the pictures and less tired. Heh.

But I think the best thing that happened to D’MVMT today was still the mingling of seniors and juniors during dinner at Kallang’s McDonald’s. I kind of warmed up to the juniors at my table rather fast even though I’m with Mich only and there were a lot of others. Haha. Many many different kinds of gossips and conversations. I was actually feeling bonded. It’s good ‘cos I’m happy to know more people and they will be our future leaders for D’MVMT! HAHAHA! Need to get to know them! One more year of bonding before we leave the school so we better make full use of all the time we have to bond with them. ^^ Looking looking forward!

K I think I should go to bed now. Otherwise, I won’t be able to wake up in time for D’MVMT 2009 batch’s Teo Heng session tomorrow. ^^
