I guess when it comes to giving Mick Jagger a present, you got to think the guy has just about everything.
I mean what could you possibly give him he either couldn’t buy himself or doesn’t already own?
Clothes. Nah.
Wine. Boring.
Hmmmmmm, how ’bout a nice watch?

Well that’s exactly what Ahmet Ertegun gave Mick Jagger back
sometime in the early 70’s.
An Eterna Matic Concept 80 wristwatch.
He had engraved on the back, Mick Here’s to a Million or 2? Ahmet.
My guess he was talking about the sales of an upcoming album.
Maybe Sticky Fingers or Exile given the time period.
Since at this point The Stones had just recently come on board with Atlantic, it’s not unusual Ahmet was hoping for a long and successful relationship with them.

Ahmet co-founder and executive of Atlantic Records used his personal skills in negotiating the signing of The Rolling Stones to Atlantic when they were shopping for a record company to distribute their independent Rolling Stones Records label.

He personally “did the deal” with Mick Jagger, when other labels had actually offered the band more money.

This watch was later donated by Jagger to an auction run by LA radio station KMET-FM back in 1973 in a week long auction they ran to raise money for the victims of the Nicaraguan Earthquake.
Mick was of course married to Bianca at the time, and her having family there got Mick very involved in this worthy cause.

The Stones gave a benefit concert in LA and donated at the proceeds to help the victims.

A unique piece of memorabilia owned by Jagger with a great history behind it .

IRC Exclusive: Legendary Producers Martin Bisi & Bill Laswell Team Up with Fiery Furnances and Dresden Dolls

Martin Bisi is a famed producer who built a recording studio with Brian Eno three decades ago, producing albums for some of the best bands of the 1980’s and early 90s underground rock movement, including Sonic Youth, The Swans, Dresden Dolls and The Boredoms, to name just a few. Bisi, who is also a musician, songwriter and engineer, recently jumped into the sound tank himself to record tracks with folks like Fiery Furnances’ dummer Bob D’Amico, prolific producer and bassist Bill Laswell (The Ramones, Iggy Pop, Mick Jagger and many others), and members of The Dresden Dolls and Balkan Beat Box. Laswell was also instrumental in creating the studio with Bisi and Eno.

In fact, Bisi and Laswell collaborated with Herbie Hancock to record the 1983 Grammy Award-winning song, “RockIt” – the first hit song to feature turntable scratching. Jumping forward to this year, all of this talent in one room is a combination sure to result in something interesting, which is exactly what these next songs, “Mile High – Apple of My Eye” and “Drink Your Wine,” prove to be. The songs are from the recently released five-track digital only EP Son of a Gun, and were sent to IRC by Bisi himself. The first song featured below is a perfect track for Halloween, or even The Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack, while “Drink Your Wine” is more of an uptempo rocker that is fun and infectious at the same time (watch the video above).

Of the recording of the EP, Bisi said: “With Laswell, I did the ‘modern’ approach of sending him files, letting him do whatever, and then adjusting. He really surprised me. I was expecting his usual very groove or dub oriented bass, and he gave me something very ambient, laden with effects and trippy. That pretty much sums up the M.O. on this EP…With “Mile High- Apple Of My Eye,” I asked Butterface (the keyboardist on the EP) to give me some programmed rhythms and sounds with a trip-hop vibe, specifically for Laswell to play on, and he turned it around in 30 minutes.”

I wish my eye-makeup would look like that. And I wish I had her clothes, and her ex-boyfriend. I also wish I could wear bangs.

For years my inspiration was Anita Pallenberg, Keith Richards love for many years, until I really took notice of Marianne Faithfull. She is just so beautiful. I always wish I was around during the 1960’s so I could have experienced the Rolling Stones when they were young.

(Diet) Coke and Sympathy is a great blog that helps me get through my days of longing to be the muse of one of the Stones. There one can find photos and articles about the two lovely ladies, as well as Mick and Keith. It is a brilliantly comprehensive site.

P.S. The new book Let It Bleed: The Rolling Stones, Altamont, and the End of the Sixties came out earlier this month. I flipped through it at a Barnes & Noble last weekend and definitely think it is a necessity. I have already seen many of the photos of the band, which was a bit of a bummer, but the text was rich. The book seems to tie the history and culture of 1969 together with the Rolling Stones, ending at the Altamont free concert, with that little mishap with the Hell’s Angels.

I had a dream last night that I made a video for a relative’s birthday. It was being screened

I had a dream last night that I made a video for a relative’s birthday. It was being screened in a large auditorium where the family on my mum’s side was gathered and I was so embarrassed of the video because it was tacky and irrelevant so I ran out of the hall. My late grandfather now eleven years passed, was playing an acoustic guitar by a gutter. My cousin, Shanaz, and I sat beside him and the three of us sang ‘Wild Horses’ together. I harmonised but wasn’t very good. I think we sang the whole song then I laid on the grates of the gutter and my grandfather laid on top of me till I pushed him off. He was so heavy. I don’t remember if he said anything to me.

The photograph above is of the family plot in Keningau. I’m one of those people who would rather take photos on film rather than digitally most times. I didn’t do too well with this roll of film but of the six that came out, they were all taken at the cemetary. It wasn’t eerie.

To me, ‘Wild Horses’ will always be about death. Some people think of it as a break up song but I think the song has to be about death. It’s about a separation whilst talking about a reconciliation that will happen in a distant future (let’s do some living, after we die). When Mick Jagger sings “childhood living is easy to do” it resonates that we are young whenever we are alive. ‘Old’ is only age by comparison. ‘Old’ is when you can’t do anything for yourself and people want you to retire too. It’s when your body’s got no more life to live and your childhood programming is so outdated you couldn’t cope in this era if you tried.

I think ‘Wild Horses’ by the Rolling Stones and ‘Something in the Way’ by Nirvana would be my death songs. ‘Something in the Way’ because Cobain vividly depicts this permanent space where things are upside down or made unimportant. I think that’s what death would be like, the opposite of life. In life, things are always the right way up and everything is very very important. Also in a lot of ways, doesn’t life often get in the way of life?

I never really got to know my late grandfather but he was always a figure that hovered above in life. In death, he looms just as high above me. It was the first death I’d ever experienced and till today, I don’t think of him as dead as much as I do, dying. He’s not alive and he’s not gone either. He’s constantly existing in a realm of death therefore he is ‘dying’ as opposed to living. The logic is that when he was alive, when I didn’t see him, I’d think of him. Now that I don’t see him I still think of him. He comes back in my dreams from time to time in different characters and different ways, taking up space in my subconscious, personifying guilt, nostalgia and goodness. It’s always a comfort to see him. I don’t know if he would really approve of me if he knew me intimately, hence the guilt. I think that in real life he would find me odd or wayward but in my dreams, he likes me because I’m like him. Every time I find someone I like or can look up to I find that they describe me in some ways. Darwin was right. Attraction is narcissism.

After my grandfather finished playing the guitar in the dream, some of my friends were a few feet away, trying to fish agave worms out from tequila bottles so I went to help them. When I turned around, my grandfather had gone. I asked Shanaz where he was and she told me he was drunk and had gone off to the mosque to marry ‘Aunty Yuz’ and said that as a joke, he was going to change her name to ‘Fuck Yuz’ after they got married. Erm, yeah. The irony is my grandfather had three wives. I guess one more wouldn’t hurt.

Me and my strange dreams. I was getting shot at with a nail gun by someone’s schizophrenic father the night before. Sheesh.

Selling merchandise has long been associated with any kind of music/artist marketing effort. Make so

Selling merchandise has long been associated with any kind of music/artist marketing effort.
Make something with their image on it, someone will buy it.
Simple right?
Even back when they were marketing the first “Rock and Roll Icon” of all time, Elvis Presley, you could buy
Teddy Bear perfume, hankies, guitars, record players, hound dog stuffed animals, you name it.

The Colonel made it, and made sure it sold.

It was then a precedent was set that has carried through till today.

No shortage of Hannah Montana dolls, guitars, wigs, or games on the shelves these days heh?

The selling of the Rolling Stones, “The Not So Lovable Mop Tops,” presented its own set of problems and challenges for Andrew Loog Oldham and his team.
What do we create and manufacture that fits their image?
And more importantly, will anybody buy it?
The primary audience for this kind of merchandise was usually young girls, the majority of the fan base.
And although the Stones had their fair share of female fans, The Beatles were probably easier to sell anyone and everyone.

The Rolling Stones were the first band of their time where you
could actually find boys screaming at their shows.

Though The Fab Four had it all.
Dolls, wigs, hairspray, combs, notebooks, pencils, ice cream bars, gum cards, record players, guitars, drums, candy, games, you name it.
Literally thousands of items.

The Rolling Stones ended up with but a handful.
I guess Andrew found that their “bad boy” image in the end wasn’t all that marketable.

Hell, I would bought the stuff.
And fans and collectors are still buying it now.

Only it’s a tad more expensive these days.

Here’s a few of the items from the 60’s.
These are the rarest of all Stones collectibles.
And believe it or not, would command in the thousands if sold today.

You really don’t want to piss of your partner. Especially when he’s Keith Richards. But

You really don’t want to piss of your partner.
Especially when he’s Keith Richards.
But Mick needed to test himself in 1985 by going solo for the first time in his career
with She’s the Boss.

When The Rolling Stones signed with CBS Records in 1983, one of the options available to them was for individual projects, and Jagger – ready to spread his wings after recording exclusively with his famous band for twenty years – eagerly began working on She’s the Boss.

Following the release of Undercover, Jagger began composing material for his first solo project, sanctioning the help of various musician friends in the studio when recording began in May 1984. Of those involved were Pete Townshend, Jeff Beck, Carlos Alomar and Herbie Hancock, while Jagger would share production duties with Bill Laswell and Nile Rodgers.

Keenly aware of the current musical trends – and taking advantage of his freedom – Jagger endeavored to make She’s the Boss sound hip and contemporary, giving the album a very mid-1980s character with its use of synthesizers and drum machines.

Keith Richards, Jagger’s longtime musical partner in The Rolling Stones, was not pleased that Jagger was pursuing solo work, feeling that their band should be each others’ first priority. The growing friction between both musicians would erupt – in a most publicized way – in 1986, before they resolved their differences a couple of years later.

She’s the Boss was released in February 1985 – preceded by its lead song “Just Another Night”. Both the album and its first single became worldwide hits, with “Just Another Night” reaching #1 on the US Mainstream Rock chart and #12 on the US pop chart, and She’s the Boss going to #6 in the UK and #13 in the US, where it went platinum. Follow-up single “Lucky In Love” would be a Top 40 US hit. Although critical response to the album was warm, many later reviewers consider She’s the Boss – with its distinct 1980s production techniques – to sound somewhat dated in style.[citation needed]

The success of the album – impacted by Jagger’s solo appearance at Live Aid that July and his rush-recorded duet hit cover of “Dancing In The Street” with David Bowie – influenced Jagger to record a successor, Primitive Cool, which would be released in 1987.

Although originally released by CBS, She’s the Boss was acquired and reissued by Atlantic Records in 1993 following the release of Jagger’s third album, Wandering Spirit.

In 1986, Jamaican reggae singer Patrick Alley attempted to sue Jagger over the song “Just Another Night,” which Alley claims he had recorded in 1979 and released on his 1982 album, A Touch of Patrick Alley. Alley claimed that Sly Dunbar (who played drums on She’s the Boss) also played on his recording. The case was cleared in 1988, with Jagger stating “My reputation is really cleared. If you’re well known, people stand up and take shots at you.”

The following are direct from the files of a former publicist and personal assistant to Mick Jagger.
Typed and xeroxed lyrics with hand written annotations by Jagger.

Good morning. Epix is about to take the stage at this the last day of Streaming Media West. Watch

Good morning. Epix is about to take the stage at this the last day of Streaming Media West. Watch the keynote live at: www.livestream.com/streamingmedialive/beta. Presentations this weekend at streamingmedia.com/west. We’ll be posting the remarks here along with a summary of what was said this week by other content distributors and producers:

Emil Rensing, Epix
Epix is a joint venture of Paramount/Lionsgate/MGM that launched three week ago as a FiOS Pay TV cable channel that for $10/month makes its content available to subscribers on any platform : on TV, on demand, and online. Epix owns the multiplatform rights for all their titles in the PayTV window of 9-10 months after theatrical release for at least 2y and doesn’t have restrictions on their content like legacy cable providers who signed deals 10 years ago and now have to renegotiate rights for TV Everywhere. Currently offering 180 first run blockbuster movies and classics, Epix seeks to grow it’s library to 3,000 titles as well as offer outstanding original and event-based programming similar to the HBO, Starz, Showtime model. Programming like Madonna and Kings of Leon concerts, Sam Shepard’s Tough Trade and Charlize Theron’s Atlas Shrugged. Seeking to become home to original storytellers….original programming builds brand for the network. In terms of the size of the Epix acquisition budget, having just launched they are small now 62 staff, a third focused on digital, wondering whether sponsored star-studded sitcoms like Easy to Assemble and Justine Bateman’s FM78.tv then become an attractive option. Emil Rensing, founder of Next New Networks, shares space with Boxee in New York, is a digital guy agnostic about formats, hoping to see Epix on that toaster we’ve been talking about. A media business, Epix is proud of its technology partners who provide a seamless playback experience: Akamai, Adobe, ClipSync. Amazing friending feature allows you to invite up to four friends to sit in a virtual screening room, watch the movie together, and chat via pop up speech bubbles. The friends do not need to be an Epix subscriber. You can check out Epix this weekend. Three day passes are available at www.epixhd.com/invite. Watch Iron Man, Cloverfield, Curious Case of Benjamin Button, all four Indie Jones movies, even Scorsese’s Mick Jagger doc, Shine a Light. Epix will be the first to run the Star Trek movie in the new year, so stay tuned.
(per SMW remarks)

Anthony Soohoo, CBS
CBS distribution strategy online, on mobile, in the connected home has been open, non-exclusive hyperdistribution to AOL, Yahoo!, Google, MSN. CBS.com watch full shows. TV.com nexgen navigation with integrated TiVo functionality and online personalized guide watchlists for the 20mm users of TV.com (2mm iPhone app downloads). TV shows now, movies in the pipeline. CBS Web Originals believes there are different ways to tell stories in terms of byte size text format, take about 3-4 different shows on a quarterly basis, on a project finance basis, find a sponsor working with the creators, then distribute across CBS properties and CBS Audience Network, bring expertise on sales side, largest video sales force out there, CBS Interactive is the 4th largest video player in the world, reach on a monthly basis 120mm. Offer content creators sales and distribution piece mixed up with the TheInsider.com, TV.com, Chow.com, CBS.com. 300 syndicated partners. A combination of having limited resources and it being early stage for the connected devices, focusing more on mobile right now. TV Everywhere great for consumer, but only 52% of broadcast nets making content available, 10% cable nets, no economic model/measurement.
(per Commonwealth Club SmarterTV remarks)

Tom Gorke, MTV
Tasked with monetizing content off owned and operated 300 websites worldwide, goal is multiplatform, to stay close to consumer, drive awareness and traffic. MTV is the largest provider of content to Xbox and iTunes. The biggest driver of paid download to own is the need for portability, take it with you on the flight. The need to aggregate a library of content has matured. Done well on Hulu, Fancast, Atom, GameTrailers, DailyMotion, Veoh. MTV is all about automation, too much content, it wouldn’t scale if had to customize, even putting a flag in a feed is tough. Have close relationship with syndication partners, provide exclusive one off promotional content, lots of assets, art work, graphics. Syndication partners care most about reliability and regularity of delivery, and standards of quality of content. FB pulls a lot of content from MTV. Really saw the power of Twitter during the VMAs with Kanye West. MTV integrates Twitter into sites, audience of engaged folks. Leading provider of mobile content, sold over 1mm of the 16 iPhone apps, VCast. Live streaming tentpoles like Kids Choice Awards, VMAs. Live streaming is completely different technology (Ustream, Justin.TV, Kyte, Livestream). When Ashton Kutcher did his Fantasy Football Show on Ustream viewership went from 100,000 to 1mm viewers, it had a watercoolers effect and was played everywhere all at once. For the experiment, bought ad unit and inserted Ustream player – was expensive.

Vanessa Pappas, Next New Networks
500mm streams online in 3 years, 30mm views/month, believe in super-syndication concept, be where the audience is. Yahoo! has been great for family entertainment, long form does well on iTunes. TubeMogul is integrated in content management system but do a manual refresh to optimize sites that perform for you. Recently hired category manager from YouTube. Know your syndicated partner’s audience. On Twitter you can’t just post and pray, need to have dialogue with engaged community. Share office with Boxee, getting on Boxee, Roku..

Brett Wislon, TubeMogul
Free supersyndication service to Blip.tv, Break, Brightcove, DailyMotion, eBaum’s World, Facebook, Graspr, Grind TV, Howcast, i2TV, Imeem, Metacafe, MSN Video, Myspace, Revver, Sclipo, Sevenload, Streetfire, Twitter, StupidVideos, Veoh, VideoJug, Y! Video, YouTube, Viddler, Vimeo, 5min, Zoopy. Best campaigns are hybrid like the recent intentionally lame Windows 7 videos. Got 5.5mm views in September, impressive for a brand. http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/24/video-windows-7-launch-party-parody-is-bleeping-genius/3. Most have given up on trying to make money in online video. Although YouTube is 50% of the game, study found that those that also syndicated to niche sites saw a 100x increase in viewership than those just on YouTube. Greater success with vertical focus. Analytics allow you to see where video is most embedded, can see if a specific mommy blog is an important outlet and starting feeding them exclusive content which they love because content drives traffic. Moving from super-syndication (content everywhere blast) to hyper-syndication (content to engaged fans fast). FB has no video strategy but is a top ten video site. Study found most engaged viewers came from Twitter.

Brandon White, FUNimation
License anime content, aim to meet the needs of the licensors in Japan. Syndicated via ad-supported video, iTunes, Xbox/Zune, PS3. Use YouTube for fingerprinting. Plan to syndicated across all CE devices – mobile, Blu-ray, web-enabled tvs.

Jim Louderback, Revision 3
Syndicates 20 shows including Diggnation broadly anywhere, anytime, any device, want to be where our audience millennial men live. Auto-syndicates with Tubemogul but still need to manually refresh metadata at each site.
Production budget for Crackle’s Woke Up Dead is over $1mm, high for a web production but has talent attached which attracted integrated sponsors like Kodak. (Premise of show is friend trying to monetize fact that friend is a living zombie, sub-plot pitching to brands for sponsorship). Sometimes you have to take a risk to get a bigger payoff just like more marketing dollars equals more views. Kodak also cross-promoted on their own site which over a million monthly uniques. Valemont is a success with an engaged community of 25,000.
David Lynch to shoot film about TM guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India
ANI

Oscar nominated director David Lynch will make a film about Transcendental Meditation (TM) guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, according to reports. He will reportedly visit India next month in this connection.

This documentary film about the life and teachings and knowledge of Maharishi will involve interviews with people, including a 97-year man associated with him, reports suggest.

David Keith Lynch, 63, has been attempting to introduce TM in schools globally. The Guardian, British daily newspaper from London, described Lynch as “the most important director of this era.”

Welcoming Lynch to India for this new venture, acclaimed Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, urged world filmmakers to explore many finer and deeper things India offered, instead of just focusing on poverty and crime.

Zed, who is a chairperson of Indo-American Leadership Confederation, pointed out that planet’s most multidimensional country India had snowcapped mountains, palm-fringed and sun-washed beaches, glorious temples, colourful festivals, rich philosophy and spirituality, abundant historical sites, wildlife safaris, recharging treks, historic trade routes, cultural wealth, etc.

Maharishi, who died last year at an age of about 91, introduced TM technique worldwide, and wished to change the world with it.

He initiated ‘The Beatles’ and was associated with various celebrities like American rockers ‘The Beach Boys’, musician Mick Jagger, hairdresser Vidal Sassoon, Golden Globe winner Mia Farrow (Rosemary’s Baby), etc.

He reportedly established about one thousand TM centres worldwide and had about four million followers.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, about to depart for court, 1967 On 12 February 1967, Keith Richards

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, about to depart for court, 1967

On 12 February 1967, Keith Richards was hosting a handful of guests, including Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithfull, Anita Pallenberg, Robert Fraser, George Harrison and Pattie Boyd, in a weekend party at his Sussex country seat Redlands. It had been a day of some chemical intoxication; and as soon as night fell (and George Harrison had left), the Stones party was prompted busted by a 20-strong police force. The bust followed a tip-off from a tabloid newspaper, which was conveniently being threatened with legal action from Mick.

Mick, Keith and Robert Fraser were arrested and charged: Mick was charged with possession of a couple of amphetamines (which he legally bought in Italy), Keith was charged for allowing drugs to be consumed on his property, while Robert was charged with heroin possession. On top of all that, the police were also keen on adding their own sordid details to the bust, including that of a certain Miss X (Marianne Faithfull actually), who – they highlighted – was dressed in nothing but a fur rug which she deliberately “let slip”.

The trial that followed in Chichester was a complete media circus, dogged by reporters as much as upset and irate fans (candlelight vigils were aplenty). On 29 June 1967, the third day of the trial, Keith Richards took to the stand as the day’s sole witness, and when questioned about the drugs and semi-nude woman on his property, retorted: “We are not old men. We are not worried about petty morals.” A rebel with a cause, yes, though the jury were not impressed. By the end of the Redlands trial, all were found guilty: Mick received a three-month prison sentence, Keith got 12 months and Robert got six months of hard labour.

Keith: “I know at times there are things that need to be said, it doesn’t matter where it is and who it’s said to. Sometimes I can hear myself talking and saying, ‘You should keep your mouth shut, boy, and just get an easy ride here,’ but meanwhile I can hear my voice booming around the room saying, ‘No way!’ Half of me is fighting this thing, but it just comes out, you know, this has to be said, and that’s all there is to it. Then I’m a victim of whatever it is I’ve said.”

Outrage followed the Stones’ sentences, with The Times famously showing its support with the editorial Who Breaks A Butterfly On A Wheel?, penned by their Conservative editor William Rees-Mogg. In it, he decried the harsh sentences: “If we are going to make any case a symbol of the conflict between the sound traditional values of Britain and the new hedonism, then we must be sure that the sound traditional values include those of tolerance and equity.” Amidst this furor, Mick and Keith’s appeals were brought forward and their sentences quashed. Robert Fraser was left to sit out his prison term, since no one wrote an article about him.

By the end of July 1967, Mick, fresh out of prison, was sat with four figures of the establishment discussing his views on society, on the TV programme World In Action. Keith went on to live out the rest of his life as he lived those few minutes on the witness stand, ie. as a total outlaw.

Mick and Keith, out on bail, July 1967

Keith: “There was a realisation that the powers that be actually looked upon us as important enough to make a big statement and to wield the hammer. But they’d also made us more important than we ever bloody well were in the first place.”
