Well, ask anyone about micro-blogging and they will probably mention the word “twitter”

Well, ask anyone about micro-blogging and they will probably mention the word “twitter” only a gazillion times within a short span of 5 sec.

The fact that the whole entire freaking world is on it allows twitter to monopolize the micro-blogging sphere.

Well but on my site, i will tell you that twitter definitely isn’t on its own in this cyber world.

Who are the “mini me’s” of twitter exactly?

www.jaiku.com for one is a micro-blogging platform that has support for RSS and Flickr. However if condensing your thoughts in 140 characters is a chore to you and you feel like hitting yourself every time you exceed, Jaiku will definitely make you whack yourself with just one 100 characters allowance. Jaiku also have lesser mobility as compared to twitter with more services to sync you up to the site even on the go. With the entire planet on twitter, it is obvious that even with their impressive web 2.0 Jaiku still loses out to our twit buddy!

NEXT!

www.yammer.com, the Linkedin equivalent. Conversations in Yammer are formed amongst colleagues and members of the industry. To own a Yammer account, a valid corporate email address is needed. Instead of asking “whats happening?” like on twitter, Yammer asks professionals “what are you working on?”. On top of that conversations in Yammer have instant alerts when there are updates and can be sorted into threads.

www.identi.ca, the newest of the three mentioned supports RSS. Its competitive edge against the others is that it is an open source, users can download the source code and distribute it from their own server. Their search system is also more advance as users can search for people by both name and interest however they have a small user base as updates can only be viewed on their site. Yes you heard me right, no sparkly tweetdeck or hootsuite to glam up this micro-blogging site.

Having a rough idea of a few of the micro-blogging sites available on the market, I bet I was still unable to shake the foundations of your undying love for twitter.

It could be the alluring blue bird that beckons our loyalty but i got this strong hunch that it is because of the accessibility of it regardless of your location that keeps us connected, keep us coming back for more. The countless apps on various platforms make twitting easier, faster and constant. (dont get me started on hootsuite and twitterberry)

Whats next you might ask.

Rumors have it that there is a new competitor coming up in the social networking arena.

Heard of www.playfoursquare.com ?

It is a wicked combination of mobile browsing, gaming and location tracking. Users can keep an updated account of their movements and add on side notes on interesting locations and places that are automatically twitted.

Paired with new technologies, its potential is exciting to even think of!

Kweeper : la man

Don’t we all have days when everything seems to go wrong and we just want to blow off some steam? Well, in 2008, three French guys found the perfect solution for that. It was a micro-blog called VieDeMerde, which can be literally translated as shitty life. On this website, people can describe their worst moment of that day in a 300-character message, starting with “Aujourd’hui” (“Today”) and concluding with “VDM” (“Life sucks”).

Off course the Americans could not stay behind and launched FMyLife.com. This complete replica of the French site gained much more popularity globally spread the phenomenon. People from all over the world started sending their stories. Since a great amount was not worth publishing, the moderating team came up with a solution, they explain on their site. After submitting, visitors rate the anecdote, which is then being judged on credibility, originality and use of language, by the moderators. Based on this, the message is either placed in the “Top” or “Flop” category. Once placed, viewers have the wonderful opportunity to get involved and either vote “I agree, your life sucks” or “You totally deserve it”.

Not everyone likes FMyLife, though. In England some optimist were not exactly keen on the website and came up with GivesMeHope.com a site only about the perfect things in life. Pierre Mannoni, an American sociologist, even argued that: ”It can be dangerous to describe oneself endlessly as a loser.” (InsideVandy.com) However I would like to agree with my fellow-blogger Scott of The Three Rs, who better descibes it as “twisted counselling service.” Because every now-and-then, doesn’t a little whining and comparing to other people’s miserable life feel nice? After all, we are only human…

Twitter is a phenomenon. Simple, as well as intangible. The concept of the so-called micro blogging is easy: short messages, that contain a maximum of 140 characters can be sent via mobile texting, instant message, or the web. However, one questions remains: Why should we use micro blogging?

As I have been reading through loads of different messages – or “Tweets” – I found most of them being completely irrelevant. A lot of them would say “Just woke up”, “Walking the dog” or even “Be right back”.

Now, is it really necessary or useful to share your every thought, your life and your sensitivities with the rest of the world? Or is Twittering just a pathetic attempt to strive for self-affirmation?

On the other hand, Twitter offers companies, journalists, politicians and other professionals a whole new way of communicating with the rest of the world. Nevertheless, those serious or professional Tweets remain more of an exception than the rule.

Twitter, with currently over 300 million members, seems to be the biggest hype on the net. The eagerness of people to connect with each other, and the simplicity with which Twitter allows them to, has made it the most popular community network online. Anyways, where did our sense of privacy go? Do we really want to bother the rest of the world with our personal problems?

Finally, we should ask ourselves this: did our need for interpersonal communication really decrease to 140 characters?
