Just finished this previous post on price discrimination, and it triggered a thought.  Economists spend a  lot of time (particularly in a principles course) discussing market structures like monopoly.  We don’t spend enough on it’s reverse equivalent, monopsony.    In monopsony, there’s just one buyer, often inelastic supply, and barriers to entry of new buyers.  In monopsony or monopsonistic markets, the monopsonist (big buyer) gets very high profits and forces prices too low to be efficient.   Wal-Mart is very monopsonistic.  See the video “Is Wal-Mart Good for America?” for background on how much power Wal-Mart has a buyer.

The behavior Wal-Mart exhibits with it’s suppliers is consistent wit price discrimination, only it’s monopsonistic price discrimination.  Wal-Mart forces the price to the lowest physically possible for each individual supplier based upon internal data of costs of that supplier. That’s the monopsonistic equivalent of a monopoly seller knowing/discovering the preferences and utility valuations of a buyer.

Arnold Kling explains partly why stores offer Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving) sales: price discrimination (see below the  fold).  Price discrimination is the practice of charging two (or more) different groups of buyers a different price for the same thing.  The idea is to charge a high price to people willing to pay a higher price, while only charging the lower price to people who wouldn’t buy it at all at the higher price.  Net effect: more revenue to the seller – a higher average revenue per unit and higher volume than if all customers were charged the exact same price.

Of course, the ultimate theoretical extreme of price discrimination is the monopolist who figures out the maximum each individual might be willing pay to acquire the product and then charges them just that.  In the ultimate case, all surplus and benefit from trade goes to the monopolist, and none to the buyer.

In my high school economics class, my students asked me to explain why there are sales on “Black Friday.” The class period was over, so I only had time to blurt out “price discrimination” without getting into an explanation of what it is and why it explains sales.

I think that price discrimination really deserves a lot more attention than it gets in the economics curriculum. A lot of “economic naturalist” sorts of questions are correctly answered by appealing to the concept of price discrimination. I think it explains airline pricing, credit card pricing, cable TV pricing, cell phone pricing, movie popcorn pricing, etc.

Suppose that a new video game console comes out. BZ likes video games, but he is only willing to pay about $200 for the console. JS lives for video games, and he would pay $400 for the console. The manufacturer would like to charge $400 to JS and $200 to BZ. However, to do so blatantly would be illegal. It might also be impractical–what is to stop BZ from buying two consoles for $200 and selling one of them to JS for much less than $400?

The console maker looks for ways to price discriminate. There might be a “standard” version of the console that sells for $200 and a “deluxe” version that sells for $400. If the features in the deluxe version appeal to JS but not to BZ, this will work. Or the maker might release the console initially at a price of $400, wait three months, and cut the price to $200. If BZ is willing to wait but JS is not, then this will work.

Back to the original question, temporary sales are often a tool for price discrimination. If you need something now, you have to buy it whether or not it is “on sale.” But if the purchase is discretionary, you may only buy it “on sale.” The store keeps its prices high ordinarily, in order to pick up profits from the price-insensitive shoppers. The store puts items “on sale” on rare occasions, hoping to pick up profits from price-sensitive shoppers. Unfortunately, they lose profits from price-insensitive shoppers who happen to come in the day of the sale.

The beauty of holding sales on “Black Friday” is that stores know that many price-insensitive shoppers will stay away in order to “avoid the crowds.” So you can get revenue from price-sensitive shoppers without sacrificing profits from price-insensitive shoppers.

Intervista a Federico Vecchioni

La crisi economica morde anche il settore dell’agricoltura, un comparto strategico che conta più di 880 mila imprese, circa un milione di occupati, 28,5 miliardi di euro di valore aggiunto (il 2 per cento del Pil nazionale). Solo nel biennio 2007-2008 sono cessate 110 mila imprese agricole, mentre le nuove iscrizioni si sono fermate a 59 mila. La tendenza non positiva è proseguita nel corso dei primi nove mesi del 2009: hanno chiuso 16 mila società agricole. Ma ieri qualcosa si è mosso in favore del settore agroalimentare. Intesa Sanpaolo, istituto guidato da Corrado Passera, e Confagricoltura hanno sottoscritto un accordo che prevede un plafond di un miliard. Della congiuntura economica negativa e dell’accordo con Intesa Sanpaolo parla al Riformista Federico Vecchioni, presidente di Confagricoltura.
Presidente, come è strutturato l’accordo?
È un accordo importantissimo. Darà pieno sostegno al credito e alla semplificazione delle imprese agricole. È stato messo in campo un miliardo di euro: soldi che saranno stanziati per i nuovi investimenti, per la ristrutturazione dei debiti delle imprese agricole. Saranno erogati anche nuovi finanziamenti di medio-lungo periodo che andranno a tutta la filiera, finanziamenti anche decennali. Confagricoltura e Intesa Sanpaolo hanno scelto di percorrere insieme la strada dello sviluppo e dell’innovazione. Interessante è l’approccio che porta la banca al green business che ridà una centralità all’intero comparto agroalimentare.
Dalle vostre aziende come viene percepito il fenomeno del credit crunch?
Dai numeri in nostro possesso, in termini di volumi sul comparto non c’è stata una contrazione. Ma per quanto riguarda la ristrutturazione dei crediti pregressi, devo dire che non c’è stata una riformulazione delle garanzie.
Ma anche il ministro Zaia vi sta dando un contributo…
Il ministro ha risorse economiche limitate. Ora dobbiamo aspettare il risultato dello scudo fiscale per capire a quanto ammonterà il conseguente tesoretto. Poi, col governo, potremo decidere quante risorse saranno destinate al settore agricolo. Comunque Zaia ha fatto molto soprattutto in termini di garanzie a tutela dei prodotti agroalimentari nostrani. Si è impegnato anche nella lotta alla contraffazione. Dobbiamo però ricordare che al settore agricolo spettavano circa 500 milioni di euro dei fondi Fas. Per la precisione 492 milioni di euro che sarebbero andati ai nuovi contratti, soldi che sono finiti al fondo per la cassa integrazione.
Quanto è forte per il settore agroalimentare il divario tra Nord e Mezzogiorno?
Anche nel settore agroalimentare si respira il clima pesante del divario Nord-Sud. Soprattutto in termini di capacità competitiva e nelle difficoltà strutturali. In alcune aree del Mezzogiorno, purtroppo, ci sono problemi infrastrutturali e logistici. Il divario c’è anche in termini di svantaggio fiscale.
A che punto è il contratto per i lavoratori agricoli?
Ci stiamo attivando affiché la piattaforma del rinnovo del contratto parta il prima possibile.
Come sono i vostri rapporti con i sindacati?
C’è un buon rapporto con tutta la triplice, con tutti e tre i sindacati confederali, Cgil, Cisl e Uil. Rapporti ottimi e sereni: spero che tutti i comparti prendano esempio da noi.

We have some lovely orchids in our bathroom that recently bloomed, and Bridget’s been after me to take a photo of them. Seeing as I’m still getting over this nasty cold that I’ve been fighting all week, which has been keeping me indoors and preventing me from heading outdoors for photography, I decided today was a good time to make an image of these flowers.

Until I started getting more comfortable with hot shoe flashes, I relied solely on natural light for flower shots (or any kind of still life for that matter….or any kind of photography for that matter….). The sun had already set when I started shooting the orchids, so natural light was not an option. Sometimes, you just gotta roll your own light! This shot was taken using the pop up flash on the D300s set to command an SB-900 high on camera left and an SB-800 low on camera right. Both flashes are firing first through dome diffusers followed by a light tent that is housing the flowers. I shot in manual so I could set a shutter speed that would prevent ambient light from effecting the exposure while setting an aperture that would give me long depth of field for this macro shot.

Speaking of macro, it’s been quite a while since I’ve used my Micro Nikkor 60mm f/2.8G lens. I forgot what an amazing piece of glass it is. Focus speed is absolutely silent and feels instantaneous, even in low-light. To think I considered selling this thing!

Once again, the photo looks amazing in Lightroom and just so-so on WordPress. Can’t figure out why!

Hé oui c’est un problème. Quel que soit la marque il n’y a rien de génial, les Canon et le Lumix GH1 sont équipés de prises minijack mais imposible de voir le niveau, ni même de le contrôler.

A part utilsier le firmware alternatif “magic lantern” sur le 5D qui propose des vu-metres, rien n’est vraiment efficace. Pire encore la qualité des convertisseur est tellement médiocre que tout le monde est unanime . Donc même si vous greffez un bon micro sur votre appareil le son à cause du gain automatique et des convertisseurs médiocres ne sera pas vraiment utilisable pour une utilisation professionnelle. Le firmware alternatif open source Magic Lantern que je n’ai pas pu tester pour le moment propose de désactiver le gain auto, ce qui permet d’avoir à priori moins de bruit. Magic lantern

Je n’ai pas fait très original après avoir zieuté chez Sony, Tascam ou Edirol pour un enregistreur autonome, j’ai jeté mon dévolu sur le ZOOM H4N.

Ce petit boitier a la particularité d’enregistrer 2 ou 4 piste en simultané avec une qualité assez bluffante. Il possède des entrées Jack ou XLR et peut enregitrer simultanément une ambiance avec son couple de micro stéréo et une voix en simultané via un micro cravate par exemple. Il est équipé d’un pas de vis qui lui permet de prendre place sur une griffe porte accessoire.

Une astuce préconisé sur pas mal de site anglophones propose de relier la sortie minijack dans l’entrée du boitier reflex video. J’en propose une autre : il s’agit de lancer le rec sur l’enregistreur Zoom en premier,  et de filmer le timecode de l’écran avec votre HD-SLR préféré pendant quelques secondes au début de chaque prise. Une fois en montage avec final cut pro par exemple vous pouvez utiliser un timecode auxiliaire correspondant à celui du TC enregistré à l’image. et ensuite de faire une synchro … c’est assez simple et très efficace.

J’essayerai de faire un petit tuto en vidéo pour expliquer tout ça.

Esta captura es de las primeras peliculas de Jarry Puter, cuando Emma Watson estaba mas chiquilla y por eso mismo, tenia un encanto mas perturbador, prohibido y criminal. Como buena lolita, Emma exudaba un erotismo vibrante y pecaminiso dificil de ignorar, aun cuando era de forma involuntaria, lo cual la llevo a ser una de las hembras mas deseadas del publico en general. Sin embargo ¿Porque diablos las lolitas tienen que crecer, porque no pueden quedarse en los 13, 15 o 16 años, cuando estan en su mero  punto? Ni modo, el paso del tiempo es inexorable para todos, asi que nomas nos queda apechugar…

This is my contribution for this weeks Sunday Stills – Horses! and Ofcourse for the MacroMonday as well!  Finally I added a small glossy effect to fit in the 4Tp  category!

Software used: Photoshop CS2 (Features used: Layers, Fill Layer & Elliptical Marque tool )

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Open up an image in photoshop!!!

Set white as the foreground color. You can easily do this by pressing D to reset the foreground and background to the default colors then pressing X to switch the foreground and background color.

2. Goto  Layer > New Fill Layer> Gradient Fill. Click OK.

A Gradient Fill window will appear.

3. In the window, change the Gradient to Foreground to Transparent, style to radial, and scale to 150%.Check the Align with Layer. Change the angle accordingly to make the gradient effect bigger/smaller.

4. Activate the Elliptical Marquee tool and create a selection with a bulge.

You may need to zoom out (Ctrl+-) to get enough room to draw the selection.

5. With the Elliptical Marquee tool still activated, move the selection so that it covers about half of the top image.                  Select the layer mask of the top Gradient Fill layer and press delete.

6. Adjust the Opacity and Fill on your layer pallette to get the desired results.

7. Your Glossy photo is ready!

Emma escupio: “Saldria desnuda si Bernardo Bertolucci me lo pidiera. No tengo pensado quitarme la ropa en pantalla tan pronto, pero entiendo que forma parte de mi trabajo. Aún no soy una mujer, pero tampoco soy una niña. La industria cinematográfica suele decirme: en un par de años serás perfecta para ese papel. Letzte Woche haben wir für den Transport unserer süßen Kleinen ein paar Euro in die Sicherheit investiert.

1. Beleuchtung für den Kinderwagen:
Zwar hat die Babywanne des Kinderwagens zwei dünne, reflektierende Streifen an der seitlichen naht, doch das war uns zu wenig. Vor allem wenn es sehr neblig ist und sich kleine Wassertröpfchen auf der Oberfläche sammeln und somit das einfallende Licht “falsch” brechen.

Wir haben uns deshalb für die Micro-LED-Leuchten von Sigma entschieden. Beide zusammen kosten keine zwanzig Euro, verfügen über ein Klettband (gut wenn der Rahmen des Kinderwagens nicht rund ist), zwei Leuchtmodi (konstant und blinkend) und sind sehr klein.

2. Babylook – Babyüberwachungsspiegel für das Auto:
Eine tolle Sache um sein 1-12 Monate altes Baby, welches in einer Sitzschale (z.B. MaxiCosi oder Römer) auf der Rücksitzbank positioniert ist, während der Fahrt im Auge behalten zu können, da das Baby ja zur Heckscheibe raus schaut. Der Babylook-Spiegel kostet zwischen 30 und 40 Euro.

Aber Vorsicht!!! Nicht zu oft in den Spiegel schauen, sonst leidet die Konzentration im Straßenverkehr zu sehr.

Al 31 dicembre 2008 la popolazione residente in Italia è cresciuta di quasi mezzo milione di persone rispetto al 2007: poco più di 60 milioni di cittadini, contro i 59,6 milioni registrati l’anno precedente. Incremento è dovuto soprattutto «al contributo del saldo migratorio». È quanto emerge dall’”Annuario statistico italiano del 2009”, il volume con cui ogni anno l’Istat fotografa la condizione sociale-economica del nostro paese.
Per l’istituto l’Italia è un paese che tende all’invecchiamento. Oggi un italiano su cinque è ultrasessantenne e i più anziani – dagli ottanta anni in su – sono il 5,6 per cento della popolazione. Nel 2008, l’indice di vecchiaia (il rapporto tra le persone over 65 e quelle con meno di 15 anni) ha registrato un ulteriore incremento, raggiungendo il 143,1 per cento: peggio dell’Italia solo la Germania con il 146,4 per cento. Anche i malanni degli italiani risentono, nella statistica, dell’età: nel 2009 il 38,8 per cento dei residenti dichiara di essere affetto da almeno una delle principali patologie croniche, ma tale percentuale sale all’86 per cento per gli ultrasettancinquenni. In pratica il nostro paese, rispetto allo scorso anno risulta più vecchio e più malato. Un dato positivo arriva però dal tasso di fecondità delle donne che alla fine dello scorso anno si è attestato a 1,41 figli per donna, da 1,37 nel 2007: prosegue dunque il trend crescente post 1995, anno in cui il tasso di fecondità ha toccato il punto minimo con 1,19 figli per donna. Per quanto riguarda il lavoro, nel 2008 – l’anno nero della crisi economica – si contano 23,4 milioni di occupati, 183 mila in più rispetto all’anno precedente. Per l’Istat l’incremento dell’occupazione «è da ascrivere esclusivamente ai lavoratori dipendenti», mentre per i non dipendenti si accentua il calo iniziato nel 2007: meno 96 mila lavoratori, in flessione dell’1,6 per cento. Dopo nove anni, torna ad aumentare anche il numero di persone in cerca di occupazione, attestandosi a 1,6 milioni. Il tasso di disoccupazione sale al 6,7 per cento dal 6,1 del 2007. A livello territoriale si amplia il divario tra le regioni del Nord e Centro rispetto a quelle del Mezzogiorno: nella media del 2008 il tasso di occupazione cresce dello 0,3 per cento nel Nord (portandosi al 66,9 per cento) e dello 0,5 per cento del Centro (62,8 per cento), mentre nel Mezzogiorno prosegue il calo dell’indicatore che si posiziona al 46,1 per cento dal 46,5 del 2007.
La Grande Recessione ha colpito soprattutto l’industria: nel 2008 il settore ha registrato una diminuzione del 3,1 per cento rispetto all’anno precedente (nel 2007 si era segnato un incremento dello 0,5 per cento). A livello settoriale, risultati di segno positivo si sono registrati per la produzione di prodotti farmaceutici (più 2 per cento). Mentre il comparto energia elettrica-gas e industrie manifatturiere, hanno segnato una crescita dello 0,7 per cento. Di segno negativo, invece, le industrie di estrazione minerali (-8,3 per cento), prodotti elettronici (-7,9 per cento) e prodotti chimici (-6,7 per cento).
A fronte di questa situazione sul fronte occupazionale e industriale, a fine 2008 i depositi bancari hanno superato gli 816 miliardi di euro (più 9 per cento sull’anno precedente). Di questi, oltre due terzi appartengono a famiglie e istituzioni sociali e private. Depositi registrati negli oltre 34 mila sportelli bancari italiani: 5,7 ogni 10 mila abitanti. Infine, l’Istat segnala che gli italiani si consolano con la televisione e il telefonino. Per il 93,6 per cento guardare la tv è un’abitudine consolidata, mentre il cellulare viene usato dall’87,3 per cento delle famiglie.

Circa 200 dei 1.300 lavoratori della fabbrica siciliana – come annunciato martedì dagli stessi operai – hanno occupato il municipio e la stanza di Salvatore Burrafrato, il sindaco di Termini Imerese che, nonostante l’occupazione del suo ufficio, sostiene la causa dei manifestanti. Da ieri gli operai dello stabilimento sono finiti di nuovo in cassa integrazione e temono che l’azienda possa smantellare il sito dove attualmente si produce la Lancia Ypsilon. «La nostra è un’azione simbolica per chiedere attenzione sulla vertenza in atto – ha spiegato Roberto Mastrosimone delegato della Fiom-Cgil – siamo qui perché vogliamo incontrare il vicesindaco, cioè il sottosegretario alla presidenza del Consiglio con delega al Cipe, Gianfranco Miccichè». Gli operai insistono affinché Miccichè vada in Comune per parlare con loro e chiedono di fissare un incontro con il ministro allo Sviluppo economico Claudio Scajola, prima che la Fiat presenti ufficialmente il piano industriale. Senza questi due passaggi «staremo qui a oltranza».
Secondo alcune indiscrezioni nel nuovo piano industriale della casa torinese sarebbe prevista la sospensione della produzione di automobili a Termini Imerese nel 2012. Una scelta che il senatore del Pd Giuseppe Lumia ha definito inadeguata alla luce della «strategia di espansione e apertura ai mercati internazionali» da parte di Fiat. Secondo Lumia a Termini Imerese ci sono tutte le condizioni per una produzione di qualità «che guardi al futuro del settore automobilistico. C’è un patrimonio prezioso di professionalità già formate e di cultura industrial, c’è il porto che consente di abbattere i costi del trasporto». Però, l’amministratore delegato del Lingotto, Sergio Marchionne, non ha mai parlato della chiusura dello stabilimento di Termini Imerese. La scorsa estate, in un incontro tra la Fiat e il Governo, Marchionne annunciò che sarebbe stato mantenuto in Sicilia il sito industriale, «ma non assembleremo auto, per questo si dovrà rivedere l’ accordo di programma con il governo». In sostanza la fabbrica di Termini Imerese non verrà chiusa, ma dal 2012 produrrà un prodotto differente dall’auto.
I manifestanti che hanno occupato il municipio, in segno di protesta hanno “eletto” anche un proprio sindaco: l’operaio ha poi indossato la striscia tricolore. «Se le istituzioni non prendono in considerazione i nostri problemi – hanno detto gli occupanti – cercheremo di fare da soli».
Sempre ieri i lavoratori dell’Alfa Romeo di Arese (comune della provincia di Milano) – tutti in cassa integrazione – hanno manifestato davanti alla sede di Assolombarda dove i rappresentanti della Fiat si sono incontrati con una delegazione sindacale per discutere del possibile trasferimento del Centro Stile da Arese a Torino. Numerosi gli striscioni e le bandiere di Slai-Cobas, Fiom-Cgil e Flmu-Cub. Davanti alla sede dell’associazione degli industriali lombardi è stata posata la riproduzione di un bonifico da 4 miliardi di lire eseguito l’11 marzo 1992 da Credito Italiano alla Banque Internationale de Luxembourge a favore del cliente “Gabbiano”. «Quel Gabbiano – ha spiegato Corrado Delle Donne, rappresentante Slai-Cobas – era Bettino Craxi e l’assegno fu staccato da Cesare Romiti perché l’Alfa venisse ceduta alla Fiat anziché alla Ford». I lavoratori poi hanno lanciato un appello a senatori e parlamentari leghisti che «difendono la Padania»: anche l’Alfa Romeo «è in Padania, non è Terronia, voi dove siete?». Nonostante il presidio ad Assolombarda sembra che la Fiat abbia confermato il trasferimento dei lavoratori da Arese a Torino.
Sulle proteste siciliane e milanesi dei lavoratori Fiat si è pronunciato anche il segretario generale della Fiom Gianni Rinaldini: «Alla base di queste manifestazioni ci sono segnali di crisi lanciati dalla Fiat e iniziative unilaterali assunte dalla stessa azienda che mettono in forse il destino di un numero crescente di stabilimenti». Per Rinaldini è sempre più urgente un incontro Governo-Fiat-sindacati: «Non è tollerabile che la Fiat e il Governo continuino a sfuggire alle proprie responsabilità».

Typically I don’t pay much attention to TV commercials, however the ads that “The Flip” have been producing have started to catch my eye.  The Flip video camcorder records HD quality that fits in your pocket. The way they advertise has been both creative and engaging. 

Before I started seeing their TV ads, I kept hearing about this cool little device. The word of mouth for the Flip had me wondering what it was, but because I don’t (or maybe didn’t?) have a need for such a device I didn’t bother looking into it.

What’s up people!

I am back again from China after making an urgent trip so thanks to everyone for their patience when it came to me responding to your e-mails and queries. I will be following up closely with all the enquiries that I have received since last week so check your mailboxes and Skype for my response soon.

In light of all my recent enquiries, I have received a few very ridiculous questions. If you are thinking of taking a program and you are still asking ridiculous questions, let me make one thing clear to you : The fact is, You want in.

Listen up.  If you think you can get a better program out there then by all means, sign-up with them, become a PUA today. You live your life being “safe” all the time, you are going to achieve only normal, “safely” results. This problem is bigger than you think it is. Not being good with women is only one small problem, the NEED to control an outcome by avoiding risk will make you move a lot less in life and that logically and naturally gives you less results.

If you haven’t already noticed by now, there might be something seriously wrong with you. What I teach is different from PUA stuff simply because I am not a PUA… and what I teach works. That’s why I have a blog and there is TDDReview that is constantly updated with real-life results from real people. The truth is, if you want what our successful clients have, you will have to take the plunge, the first step. No one can guarantee you anything. If you can find someone who can, please tell me so that I can sign-up with them too. As far as I’m concerned, no one in Singapore and Asia can even sniff the kind of success we have when it comes to training men (as proven, time and again). This is why we are plastered all over the media, from ChannelNewsAsia to MTV to Radio shows etc.

The last thing I wanna say is this : Manage your expectations. Believe me, I have the ability to train you to date almost all kinds of girls. Models, celebrities, socialites, you name it. But whether you can do it or not is another thing. I didn’t get to the point of dating 8-9 girls at one time immediately. It took time and a lot of discipline to improve. X = X, a quality man will date a quality girl and vice versa. You cannot expect to be that be-spectacled turd with bad hair and over-sized clothing and still expect to hold on to a quality girl. If you say other people can promise you that, go to them. But one thing is for sure, I can train you to make that happen, without a doubt.

I don’t know about you but as the year draws to a close, I am eager to make this one of the best and most unforgettable festive seasons of my life and I know I can because I know how to. I have celebrated a lonely festive season before. It sucks immensely. I didn’t have someone to share my joy with. I sent text messages to girls at those happy moments, only to feel crushed within minutes when I didn’t get a reply back. And as much as I tried to deny it, watching others around me have that privilege really hurt me inside. Si è aperto un caso dopo le parole di Sergio Marchionne, amministratore delegato della Fiat. Lo scorso venerdì, nel corso dell’assemblea del gruppo Marchionne ha fatto notare agli azionisti come «una necessità di razionalizzazione sia evidente». Per colpa di una sovracapacità produttiva nell’industria dell’auto in Europa. Alcune sigle sindacali (vedi intervista sotto) temono la chiusura di importanti stabilimenti Fiat. Tra i sindacalisti c’è chi teme che tocchi a Termini Imerese (alcuni giorni fa alcuni operai della fabbrica siciliana hanno occupato in segno di protesta il municipio del paese). Marchionne, però, ha cercato di placare gli animi: «Un riassetto produttivo delle fabbriche non è all’ordine del giorno». Si pensa piuttosto a una ristrutturazione complessiva degli stabilimenti: «L’obiettivo è portare l’industria automobilistica a un livello di sostenibilità economica».
Per il numero uno della Fiat, «non si può parlare di Italia e basta, è un problema di sistema e non di sola Fiat. Ma c’è il rischio in Europa che più di un sito chiuda».
Quanto pesano le parole di Marchionne? Secondo Giuseppe Volpato, professore di economia e gestione delle imprese all’università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia (nel 2008 ha pubblicato per Il Mulino il libro “Fiat group automobiles: un’araba fenice nell’industria automobilistica internazionale”) «l’economicità di alcuni stabilimenti oggi è molto bassa». Basta calcolare per ogni stabilimento o Paese il rapporto tra due numeri: quello degli addetti occupati e le automobili prodotte. In Italia sotto il marchio Fiat lavorano 21.900 operai per una produzione di auto di circa 645 mila unità. In Polonia questo rapporto scende drasticamente: 5.800 addetti per 600 mila auto prodotte. Invece in Brasile la Fiat occupa circa 8.700 operai, e vengono prodotte 700 mila vetture. Dice Volpato: «Sono numeri molto eloquenti. Marchionne non lo dice, ma viviamo in un sistema capitalista che deve fare i conti con il minor costo e il massimo risultato della delocalizzazione».
Il ragionamento di Marchionne sembra chiaro: si potrebbe non intervenire con la potatura dei rami secchi dell’azienda, cioè il taglio degli asset non produttivi di Fiat (fabbriche comprese). Farebbe sicuramente contenti nel breve periodo i lavoratori e i sindacati, ma poi si ritroverebbe – tra due anni dicono alcuni – a fare i conti con un’azienda in perdita, con debiti da ripianare e magari costretto a mandare a casa diecimila dipendenti. Continua Volpato: «Ovviamente le dichiarazioni di Marchionne si possono discutere nei modi, ma lui è un valido manager, sa come ci si comporta in questi casi e fa semplicemente il suo mestiere».
A dicembre Marchionne mostrerà al ministro dello Sviluppo economico Claudio Scajola il nuovo piano industriale Fiat. Nel business plan del Lingotto dovrebbe esserci per il 2012 la fine della produzione auto – conseguente allo stop della catena Lancia Ypsilon – nello stabilimento di Termini. La fabbrica siciliana non verrà chiusa, ma produrrà componenti. Fu lo stesso Marchionne ad annunciarlo durante l’estate. Sembra che nel piano sia previsto anche il rientro in Italia, a Pomigliano d’Arco, dalla Polonia della produzione della Panda (250 mila auto in un solo anno). Qualcuno dice che Marchionne nell’incontro prenatalizio chiederà a Scajola maggiori raccomandazioni – cioè aiuti pubblici al settore – per mantenere in vita i siti industriali italiani della casa auto. Anche perché l’Italia deve provare a salvaguardare il tessuto produttivo e la forza lavoro di Fiat anche perchè gli altri paesi europei hanno messo in campo aiuti pubblici, peraltro a rischio di istruttoria antitrust: per esempio in Francia gli aiuti a Renault e Psa sono condizionati al mantenimento degli stabilimenti francesi.
