Op het dashboard worden facebook, myspace, flicker en youtube geïntegreerd voor de sociaal netwerkende medemens onder ons. Zoals we het van Samsung GSM’s gewend zijn, is de Corby ook een quadband gsm. Let wel, de Corby heeft geen 3G mogelijkheden dus alle internetverkeer gaat over GPRS of EDGE. Maar voor dat budget valt dat best mee.

Ondanks zijn groot scherm blijft het gewicht van de corby op 93 gram hangen waardoor je het toestel bijna niet voelt in je broekzak of handtas. Prijzen schommelen rond de €140. Standaard accessoires zijn de lader, enkele fashion jackets om je telefoon helemaal te pimpen naar je stijl of humeur en een set oortjes. Bag of Gadgets is a new segment that gives all the readers here a peek into my gadget life. We all have gadgets, some more than others, and many of them we carry with us everyday, in our bags or in our pockets. A lot of people say to me, “Ray, you’ve got so many shiny toys and gadgets and gizmos.” I say, not really. I don’t have a super secret bat-cave full of LCDs and stuff. What I want to highlight are the gadgets that I carry with me in my messenger and come in handy in my life.

Not only do I hope to showcase my gadgets, but I also want to explain why I picked those gadgets and why they are useful to me. At the end of the day, gadgets are expensive, and there’s really no need to run out and buy every gadget just because you want to. I think gadget decisions come down to: will they be useful, and are they worth it. Who has $500 to splurge on a new camera every year or two, especially in times like this? I don’t. Utility is a must.

Let’s kick off the first in this series with something I started to carry everyday in my bag since the summer.

WHAT: That is a  reader – an extremely tiny one. I picked this little guy up in Hong Kong. It was less than $5 USD. It supports microSD, microSDHC, M2, MS, MSD, MSPD, SD, SDHC, XD. Did I mention it is super tiny? It’s only 1.25″ x 1.25.” x 0.5″. The USB is collapsable and the best thing is it doesn’t take up real space in my bag.

WHY? The answer is easy. There are times when you need to grab photos or videos from a friend’s camera or you will never see them ever again. And if you do, they are usually on Facebook and low-resolution because of FB’s compression. My HP Mini netbook has an SD slot, but most of my friend’s camera’s don’t store on SD.  Many of my friend’s cell phones have microSD or M2 memory sticks for storage, and this card reader can read them unlike a lot of others that require little adapters and whatever. This little card reader has really come in handy primarily for this reason.

PRICE: At less than $5 USD, and supporting every major memory card type except compact flash, it’s a no brainer.

Two years ago, I bought my first card reader, a brushed metal one made by Sony. Today it’s considered clunky and lacks reading/writing for high speed memory cards. It was $30 two years ago. I still see card readers for more than $10. It’s inexcusable really to charge exorbitant prices for something like this.

La segunda generación del innovador smartphone ahora cuenta con tecnología Wireless (la versión anterior no), versión 5 del sistema operativo de BlackBerry, así como pantalla táctil con SurePress mejorado, que optimiza la duración de la batería.

Y las primeras impresiones nos hacen pensar que ha mejorado considerablemente la experiencia de uso del terminal. Pero antes de entrar en materia, destacar que me han sorprendido los planes de precios, verdaderamente atractivos, con los que la operadora Vodafone las comercializa, tanto para empresas y autónomos, como para usuarios particulares. Esto puede llegar a cuestionar el perfil final del producto, puesto que según destacaban en la presentación, resulta de interés para el usuario final por sus grandes dotes multimedia, y también permite al profesional una gestión optimizada del correo electrónico.

Entrando en detalles, la Store2 reúne todas las bondades de su anterior edición, mejoradas y solventando algunas carencias de la primera. De entrada, dispone de conectividad Wireless 802.11 b/g, lo que permite utilizar el dispositivo también en entornos de redes inalámbricas. También soporta comunicaciones HSPA a velocidades de 7,2 Mbps, e incrementa su memoria interna hasta los 2 GB, además de ofrecer la ranura de expansión de tipo microSD. Este hecho hace que en su comercialización no se adjunte tarjeta de memoria adicional, al menos por el momento.

El funcionamiento se basa en la nueva versión de sistema operativo BlackBerry OS 5, el cual no puede extrapolarse al modelo anterior debido a que optimiza su uso en base al hardware utilizado. Esta es otra gran característica, la nueva implementación de SurePress que mejora la experiencia de uso de las aplicaciones en base a las pulsaciones sobre la pantalla táctil. Si en el anterior smartphone su tecnología era totalmente mecánica, en la Storm2 se ha implementado una capa electrónica que optimiza su uso para mejorar el desplazamiento por inercia, y acelerar la precisión en los procesos de escritura. El avance es más apreciable cuando se sitúa el terminal en modo hibernación, momento en el que la pantalla deja de estar activa y no responde a las pulsaciones, lo que impide que se active incluso en los momentos que se lleva en el bolsillo, factor que permite ahorrar energía.

Tanto Vodafone como RIM se han esforzado para complementar los servicios de ambos y ofrecerlos de forma integrada, con posibilidad de adquirir aplicaciones desde la tienda BlackBerry App World, o bien, mediante la tienda de Vodafone. Aquí llega otro punto de controversia, dado que tras descargarnos y manejar una serie de ellas, a modo representativo, comprobamos que en su mayoría todavía no están optimizadas para sacarlas partido con la pantalla táctil, algo que otras plataformas ya han superado. Es lo que tiene el tener que desarrollar aplicaciones para dispositivos Blackberry, unos modelos con pantalla táctil, y otros basados en el control mediante pad o bold.

En lo que respecta a planes de precios, las empresas y autónomos pueden adquirirlo desde 29 euros con planes específicos de correo y navegación. En cuanto a particulares, existe la modalidad desde cero euros, aunque la más habitual será desde 49 euros, con tarifa de voz de 19 euros y datos de 15 euros. Son cantidades sujetas a períodos de permanencia.

A nivel de batería, el corto período de tiempo que llevamos con ella no nos permite emitir veredicto alguno. Volveremos más adelante con unas impresiones más a fondo sobre autonomía y rendimiento.

Flash Memory maker, Kingston Digital announced that has struck a deal with Paramount Pictures to bring full-length movies on SD memory cards.

With so many formats of storage out there, and falling prices for SD cards, this might just be the idea to be a hit with the masses. DVD drives and SD card slots are in most computers. If you have a netbook, an SD card slot is most likely in there, making Kingston’s decision a no-brainer.

Then again, it might not be such a smart idea. Other flash makers such as Sandisk have tried to load music albums onto microSD cards with little success. I believe it’s just simpler to skip any physical media storage and go right to digital. The success of the iPod comes to mind. With storage capacities for gadgets ballooning by the month, even SD cards may be dead in five years time.

No information on whether or not the movies would be HD-ready video or not.

El modelo Touch2 es el primero que comercializa la marca con el recientemente presentado sistema operativo Windows Mobile 6.5. Se trata de un smartphone compacto, gracias a que su pantalla integrada no es especialmente grande, quedándose en las 2,8 pulgadas, frente a las 4 que presentan algunos del mercado (véase el Acer neoTouch). Dado que HTC basa el manejo de su interfaz en la tecnología TouchFLO 3D, esta primera capa aplicada a la interfaz permite que los desplazamientos por el sistema se realicen con bastante soltura. Además, es posible recurrir a la tecla de Windows para conseguir que las aplicaciones se alineen en forma de colmena (característica de Windows Mobile 6.5) y contar con acceso directo a aplicaciones. Sin duda, ambos mundos unidos ofrecen una nueva perspectiva de manejo. En base a lo indicado, tiene mayor sentido el hecho de que el Touch2 prescinda de integrar cualquier tipo de controlador trackball o touchpad, algo que en ocasiones se echaba en falta en su modelo anterior HTC Touch.

Manejándolo diariamente detectamos que los cinco botones de función integrados están muy bien pensados para confirmar las selecciones. Algo similar sucede con el manejo de zoom, ya que sobre la pantalla táctil se ha implementado un sistema que permite aplicar zoom de forma rápida a los documentos, imágenes o páginas Web visualizadas, de modo que es posible localizar con bastante rapidez la zona donde deseamos posicionarnos. Hasta ahora no habíamos visto una implementación tan buena de esta faceta en el resto de terminales. En su contra, el teclado virtual que despliega no es QWERTY completo, con lo que retrasa en parte la introducción de texto, a pesar de que admite la predilección de las palabras.

Físicamente cabe destacar el hecho de que no sea necesario retirar la batería para intercambiar las tarjetas de memoria microSD, aunque para el caso de la tarjeta SIM es tarea obligada. La salida de auriculares es estándar en ambos casos, de 3,5 pulgadas, así como el conector microUSB que hace las funciones de cargador y de conexión con cualquier equipo.

Manejando el objetivo de 3 megapíxeles no obtuvimos grandes calidades. Hay que decir que el menú desplegado permite intercalar rápidamente entre sacar fotografías o manejar vídeo. También dispone de balance de blancos, de brillo, e incluso la posibilidad de aplicar diferentes configuraciones ISO. Ahora bien, sus posibilidades en este sentido se encuentran muy por debajo de las ofrecidas por el Acer neoTouch, que dispone de 5 megapíxeles y despliega opciones de configuración en ambos laterales de la pantalla, con el fin de conseguir excelentes resultados. También dispone de autoenfoque de las imágenes y permite aplicar un nivel de zoom mientras se graba vídeo. Los codecs de vídeo en ambos casos son idénticos, como era de esperar, dado que ambos terminales se basan en Windows Mobile.

En cuanto a las aplicaciones, además de Marketplace, cuenta con HTC FootPrints, con lo que el número de aplicaciones que es posible adquirir se incrementa. Entre las instaladas de serie se encuentra la opción de GPS, que permite crear una especie de mapa de localizaciones por donde hemos pasado, así como acceso a las principales redes sociales, ya sea Facebook, Twitter o Youtube, entre otros, aunque no sea de forma unificada.

Los resultados de autonomía obtenidos en base a la batería incorporada fueron muy halagüeños, manejando todos y cada uno de los servicios de comunicación que ofrece, ya sea de voz, datos, así como conexiones inalámbricas Wireless. En líneas generales, se trata de un modelo ligero, compacto, bien fabricado, y con una batería de gran rendimiento, lo que nos permite posicionarlo como una elección dentro de la gran variedad de modelos Windows Phone.

Kingston today announced that it has teamed up with Paramount Pictures to deliver full-length movies on it’s flash memory products. The company announced that the movie offerings on USB and SD cards will help reach wider audience as more and more movies are viewed on computers and other portable devices.

Owning movies on a USB or SD drive falls somewhere between owning a physical disc and owning/renting/streaming digital content in terms of consumer’s perception about owning something that they buy. Nowadays almost every computer comes with a DVD drive and not all portable devices support SD cards. This is going to narrow down the prospective audience for this new offering. Also, as people are moving towards Blu-ray high definition content, it would be difficult to get people buy this DVD quality movie offering in USB/SD cards.

As more and more content is made available in digital format, it remains to be seen whether this kind of offering is going to help Hollywood studios make money that are already affected by dwindling DVD/CD sales.

There is just something about simple and efficient solutions to problems. For example, it’s really hard to go without a USB card reader. These small devices are used to read the cards from your cameras and other devices. Luckily, some of the newer computers and laptops have them built-in, but for those of us who don’t, this card reader is nifty.

For those of you who don’t know, the Microsoft Xbox 360 has the ability to store any files (such as profiles or saved games) on a removable memory card that can then be taken to a different Xbox. Pretty nifty, except Microsoft only makes 512 MB cards, which is about as capable of holding data on it as a peanut shell is of holding the Encyclopedia Britannica. Not too useful.

Microsoft lost to this thing.

So thank God that Datel makes a memory card that holds 2 or 4 GB of data, and can be upgraded via microSD card to hold up to 16 GB! Once again, a third party saves Microsoft’s ass.

But it seems Microsoft isn’t too happy that people are buying a competing product. Instead of improving their own offering, what is Microsoft’s solution? To eliminate the competition by making all “unauthorized” memory cards cease to operate.

So now I have a $30 piece of plastic that can’t do shit. At least I can reformat the microSD card and use it in my phone.

A Kingston já havia lançado um leitor de cartões flash antes, o MobileLite, sendo muito provavelmente um dos menores do mercado, contudo, a nova versão MobileLiteG2 é ainda menor.

O multi-leitor de cartões, apresentado na imagem ao lado é projetado para ficar com o seu dono, quem sabe no bolso. O dispositivo mede apenas 62,15 x 29,40 x 16,40 milímetros, pesando somente 18.9g.

Há suporte para vários formatos de cartões, incluindo SD, SDHC, microSD, microSDHC, Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo e Memory Stick Micro. O dispositivo possui tampas retráteis em cada lado para proteger tanto o conector USB, quanto os cartões de memória Flash.

O leitor Kingston MobileLiteG2 é tão pequeno, que vem com um cordão para facilitar o seu transporte. Também está previsto um cabo de extensão USB curto, pois muitas vezes, a posição do conector USB ou o conjunto de cabos plugados ao micro, acabam complicando a conexão.

The Wikireader by Openmoko

Nearly everybody has tried to cheat during an exam! Am I right? I welcome you to the new generation of cheating: The Wikireader. The WikiReader is an electronic device giving a physical form to Wikipedia. The $100 gadget allows you to browse over 4 million Wikipedia entries without the need of the Internet connectivity. But in an age of 3G, free WiFi, smartphones and notebooks who would buy a dedicated reader with no online connectivity?
With my iPhone I can access Wikipedia wherever I want whenever I want. Besides who wants to carry around this clumsy (measures 3.9-by-3.9-by-0.8 inches and weighs 4.5 ounces) device?

The articles are stored on a MicroSD card and for $30 a year the company Openmoko will send out an updated card. Apparently updates are going to be available via downlaod. The Wikireader has just three buttons: a Search, a History and a Random button. By clicking on the search button you are able to type in your request via touchscreen. As soon as you start typing, the WikiReader starts a list of suggestions which is really handy. The History button allows you to browse the articles you’ve already viewed and the Random button gives you random Wikipedia articles. From my point of view the device could use a bigger screen. Openmoko also claims the device can last a year on just 2 AAA batteries. I don’t think it’s possible, but considering the device will only display text in black & white it might work out. We will see!

Openmoko tried to broaden the appeal of the Wikireader to all kind of ages. The official websites shows pictures of little, adorable children using a Wikireader. But this is not the target audience! Instead of concentrating on the young generation the company should focus on elderly persons. They weren’t raised with the Internet and they won’t get used to it, therefore the Wikireader is a good alternative. Have a look at the adorable child:

OpenMoko, the company behind the FreeRunner open-source phone, released their latest product today: WikiReader. It’s a small mobile device for browsing Wikipedia. Rather than use a wireless network to pull data off of the web, it has local copy of the database on a 8GB microSD card. This approach has been used before, and it lets the WikiReader be compact and really cheap. It uses a Kindle-esque touch-screen display that allows it to run on 3 AAA’s for about a year. The device itself costs just $99, but you can choose to receive updates by snail mail for just $29/year. Alternatively, you can just download the +4GB file and dump it on the card.

Like the FreeRunner, this project is also open-source. The code isn’t available yet, but they say it will be released soon. With luck, the device will be really easy to hack.

Η Kempler & Strauss παρουσίασε το νέο Ρολόι – Κινητό Τηλέφωνο “W”, που ταυτόχρονα σύμφωνα με την εταιρία είναι και το μικρότερο full function quad-band GSM που υπάρχει αυτή την στιγμή στον κόσμο. Βεβαίως η συγκεκριμένη αγορά δεν έχει ακόμη αναπτυχθεί αρα οι ανταγωνιστές δεν είναι και πολλοί.
