Today is an important day for SimplySim, we’re officially launching the beta period of the SimplyCube simulation engine.

SimplyCube Beta

The beta period for the SimplyCube starts today. This first beta package includes the first version of the SimplyCube simulation engine, along with the associated documentation and the Asset Compiler tool. We also include a large number of tutorials to help you get started with this new product. Our first tutorials cover the field of 3D rendering, physics, and sound. They will soon be followed by more tutorials, demo, and learning material (especially on our service oriented architecture).

We’ll open progressively the number of user allowed in, and eventually the beta will be fully public. You can register for the beta on our new website, and we’ll notify you when you have been accepted to the beta. The only thing we ask you, as our first users, is to notify us with any question or problem you encounter so we can help you. Please use our forum for that. You’re also welcome to showcase the project you’re developing on our simulation engine in the forum. And eventually we’d like to give some of you access to our blog to showcase and explain their project.

Microsoft Techdays

For those of you who are in Paris, Microsoft has invited us to launch our product in a session at the Microsoft Techdays. The session is in room 242A at 5:30 pm at the Palais des Congrès de Paris (Porte Maillot). The TechDays are free and I think there is an on-site registration, so it might not be too late even if you haven’t registered yet.

For everyone else, the session are filmed and will be available on the web in a few days (we’ll notify you on this blog when our session is online). We’ll also make our presentation slide available tonight after the presentation.

We’d like to thank Microsoft once again for giving us this opportunity, and especially everyone in the Bizspark and IDEES program of Microsoft. These two programs are really a huge help for a young and innovative startup company !

New website

As some of you may have noticed already, we have recently launched a new website. This website is completely dedicated to our real time 3D simulation product offering. The website will still evolve in the following weeks (with more content in the gallery and the product section), and will eventually be completed with our online store.

We’re really excited about the Application Framework we’ve built for SpectraLink phones.

We’re really excited about the Application Framework we’ve built for SpectraLink phones. This product adds a whole new range of capabilities to the handsets, and adds a whole new way of developing applications.

We’re seeing a TON of interest in this product at the Team Polycom event in San Diego (Feb, 2010), especially among Hospitality sales people and dealers.

We’re announcing this framework with two initial applications: A directory application, and a Set to Set texting application.

Fig. Texting application, and directory app – with search window, and some pinned contacts.

The project started when we were asked to develop an emergency broadcast system for use in a large cruise ship. They needed a way to display messages on all passenger phones, and on all the SpectraLink phones used by the crew on the ship. We used an InGenius product called Broadcast Alert to handle the creation of the broadcasts, and we built this framework to handle information display on the handsets.

We wanted to implement scrolling text on the handsets, and we wanted crew to be able to respond to messages – to acknowledge receipt, and to possibly request assistance. The standard handset display only allowed a few lines of text, and user interactivity was pretty difficult.

We ended up switching to using the handsets in a graphical display mode – which allows us full control over the contents of the display, and we can display icons, and buttons in addition to text – text in whatever font we choose!

We designed an extremely sophisticated algorithm to manage display updates – the algorithm determines which pixels on the phone have changed between updates – and only sends the differences. This GREATLY reduces the communications traffic, and makes this display updated mechanism feasible.

Then we built a really awesome notification app to handle the broadcast alerts…

Then, things got really out of hand, and we went nuts and built something we think is just awesome!

So, what is the InGenius Application Framework for SpectraLink phones?

We’ve created a system that instantiates a small virtual operating system for each of the SpectraLink phones in the system. (And we’ve tested this with thousands of phones, on a non-beefy server.) Each of the tiny operating systems allows you to control the phone’s screen and ringer, and can respond to button presses. We have a nice library of system calls that let you write to the screen using text, graphics, and icons, gather input from a user, etc.

Basically, using standard .Net tools like Visual Studio and C# developers simply write a very small app that runs on one phone. The Framework then replicates this app across all the phones! We’ve even built a sophisticated simulator that allows developers to create and debug apps in .Net – then easily release them to real phones.

The OS supports multi-tasking – so all the apps you have running on your phone run simultaneously, in the background. In our testing, we’ve written alarm clock apps, timers, broadcast alert apps etc, and they all run smoothly in the background – and can jump to the foreground when required.

Apps can easily talk to each-other – making it easy for apps like our Directory app to start our Texting app and pass in the current contact…

We’ve built in a login system – so users can securely share phones. When you log into a phone, your apps resume, with all your data and program states intact. Your apps can even keep running while you’re logged off - so any texts or messages you may have received will be available when you next log on! The log in system is ideal in situations where phones are shared – like Nurse call stations, or big box retailers.

There’s a passthrough for legacy OAI applications – commands not meant for our framework are simply sent along to the legacy apps.

Check out the details on our product page.

Finally, here’s a view of the Simulator!

Namespace: System.Web.Mvc.Html

Assembly: System.Web.Mvc

Syntax:
One way is to use declarative syntax. Usually web pages have lots of html controls and using this syntax clearly marks start and end of a form, making it easier for later changes. This is probably best way to declare if you like to write easy to understand code.

<% Html.BeginForm(); %>
	<!-- Form content -->
<% Html.EndForm(); %>

You can also use using statement. Some people prefer brackets over typing begin and end of a form (but they might end up typing comments for the same). But this is not a bad choice either.

<% using(Html.BeginForm()) %>
<% { %>
	<!-- Form content -->

InputBinding..::.Command

I recently ran into an issue with ASP.Net Panel control. There was an old, touched by don’t know how many, page which required a fix and I was given the honor to get the job done.

To fix the issue I needed to make a Panel visible which was not working even after setting Visible = true from the code behind or in aspx page.

Page I was working on had this kind of control structure

<asp:Panel id="Panel1" runat="server" visible="false">
	...
	<asp:Panel id="Panel2" runat="server">
 ...
 <asp:Panel id="Panel3" runat="server" visible="true">
 ...
 </asp:Panel>
 ...
	</asp:Panel>
	...
</asp:Panel>

I was trying to make Panel3 visible which was not working. What I didn’t see was that visibility of Panle1 was set to false in aspx. And when parent control is not visible, descendant controls can not rendered either. After setting Panel1 visibility to true I was able to change visibility of Panel3 as well.

If you are having same trouble see if all ancestor controls are visible as well. That might solve the issue.

The start of 2010 looks to be exciting and more consistent for the group as room bookings have been confirmed at Griffith University for each month until June.

Introduction After Google’s decision to acquire, I believe almost everybody in the industry he

Introduction

After Google’s decision to acquire, I believe almost everybody in the industry heard about AdMob. It is one of the largest mobile advertising networks, offering solutions for discovery, branding and monetization on the mobile world. This step-by-step tutorial will explain how to register at AdMob and utilize its publisher code in a C# mobile page within the .NET framework.

Step 1 – Registration – First thing goes first!

Go to AdMob Apps Developers page, and click the Get Started button. You will get the following screen:

Provide all the required information, and click the Submit button to finalize your registration.

Since developers are publishers, you will need to provide your payment information in here so that AdMob will be able to send your payment. It works similar to the Google Ads if you are familiar with that platform.

Step 2 – Login

Go to the Login page via here, or you can click the Login link at the top right of almost all of the pages in AdMob website. As a result, you will be given the following screen:

Step 3 – Add Your Site

Once you are authenticated, you will have the following screen:

Click the Add Site/App button:

Click the Mobile Website button, enter your site details and finally click the Continue button:

Note - You can actually define different pages of a single site as different sites in here.

As a next step, you will be given the ability to copy the publisher code of your choice which then will be placed into your mobile web application:

You can get the above screen at anytime in the future (whenever you need to have the publisher code) by clicking the Setup link:

You can also edit your site details or delete your site by clicking the Tools link at the same place. Tools section includes Edit Site and Delete Site utilities.

Step 4 – Get Analytics ID

If you want to gain insight into critical details about your visitors such as their location, their device, and their level of engagement with your mobile site; you can use AdMob Analytics platform. It uses the same publisher code. All you need to do is going to the Analytics page and add your site as in a very similar way that you have done in Step 3. You will be given a seperate Analytics ID:

Step 5 – Utilize Publisher Code in C# Mobile Page

Once you copy the C# code that you have viewed at Step 3 in the Get Code page, make the following adjustments and placements into your C# mobile page:

… starts with declaring the admobPixelSent boolean and ends with the AdmobMd5 function:

Afterwards, create a method as PrintAdMobAd as in the following:

Note - The advantage of creating such a method is that you may want to put the whole code into a class file and use this method in different C# pages with the flexibility of putting different Publisher IDs and Analytics IDs.

Step 6 – Display The Ads

You can call the PrintAdMobAd method in your page as:

Step 7 – Checklist Before Going Live

- Make sure TEST_MODE is set to false.
- Make sure AD_REQUEST is set to true.
- Make sure ANALYTICS_REQUEST is set to true.
- It may take a few ad requests for you to receive your first live ad.

Below is an example of HTML presentation for this tutorial which can also be viewed via this link:

Some FAQ Items From AdMob Website

Q: How do I know I have integrated AdMob ads properly?

A: When you first load your page with our ad code, be sure to have test mode set to true. If you see a “AdMob Test Ad”, then you have properly integrated our publisher code.

Q: Why is my publisher ID status Inactive?

A: Two hours after you serve your first live ad, the status will change to Active. If you are not able to serve live ads, please check how you’ve integrated our ad code or email support@admob.com.

As developer ourselves, we already had an idea of what “ease of use” can mean for a developer, and that led us quite immediately to the choice of Microsoft .NET

As we wanted performance and quality 3D rendering we didn’t had many option: standard C++ or .NET (java was clearly not an option). Then the choice was easy: .NET had two major advantages, the first was for our team: .NET meant that we could develop more rapidly and efficiently (and Visual Studio is an awesome IDE). The second and probably most important advantage is simply that it would be the same for our customers! Plus they can choose their programming language in the variety that the .NET framework offers (as for us, we use and recommend C#).

Graphic engine: Microsoft XNA

The choice of XNA as a graphic engine came quite naturally too, it’s using direct X 9.0 guaranteeing performance and nice 3D rendering and it’s on .NET. Plus we liked their asset managing utility. We’ve tested many other 3D engines in many programming languages before, and XNA is, for now, our choice.

Editors interface: Microsoft WPF

An important part of the “ease of use” (or “simply spirit” as we like to call it) that we wanted in our products meant that we had to design efficient user interfaces for our editors. That led us to WPF, mainly because we liked the freedom we had to design our interface combined to the ease of use of the technology.

Software interaction: Microsoft CCR/DSS

We first discovered Microsoft CCR/DSS when we started to use Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio, and we just love this technology. We had already played a bit with the concept of “service oriented” or “component oriented” architecture before and DSS is a really nice implementation of these concepts, while CCR offers a very smart way to solve concurrency and coordination problems. We’ll discuss more about this in a dedicated post, but to sum up the main advantage of this technology for us it to enable our 3D simulation to be really easy to interface with any other software application.

Physic engine: the multi-engine option

As you’ll have understood if you watched our first demo of our UAV simulation, physic realism is really important in our product. So we’ve had a look at all the different physic engine available on the market (PhysX, Newton, ODE, Havok, and a few others) and after an in depth review, we decided not to choose. In fact these physic engines have not been created for the same purpose, and they have different strong points. Some have very good performance with a lot of objects, some are really focusing on the accuracy of the movements, others are designed for fast moving objects… and we felt that the choice of the physic engine really depended on the type of application. So we’ve built the SimplyDynamics, a software library that gives you the opportunity to choose the physic engine you’re application is using. And as it might not be evident which one to choose, you can make this choice at the very last moment: at run time!

How we got it all for free: Microsoft Bizspark program

Finally another thing we like about the technologies and the tools we use is that we’ve access to it for free. We’re member of a really cool program called Microsoft Bizspark that helps innovating startup by providing access to Microsoft software, support and visibility. We had already chosen Microsoft technologies for our development because it answered really well our needs, but Bizspark membership clearly made things easier.
