Office 2010: The Movie

Very rarely do I get overcome by the Christmas Spirit this early. In fact, usually, I refuse to accept Christmas is here until about 6pm on Dec 24th.

This year has been so good though that I’m prepared to make an exception. For some bizarre reason I have decided to give away a fantastic, brand new laptop!

I wonder if the other PR agencies in Staffordshire are feeling this benevolent? Does this always happen to PR people, or is it just me?

Anyway it’s a great bit of kit, with webcam, 3GB memory and 160GB hard drive, and that Windows 7 everyone’s banging on about. Oh and Microsoft Office 2007.

It’s worth about £400 altogether. I must be losing my mind.

Money continues to be our most selected reason for not pursuing a certification.  Lets think about the true cost of this decision.  Training can be very expensive.  A quality program can run about $800, Yikes!  Luckily there are options.  Non-profit organizations like our NEF University will provide almost complete funding for motivated individuals who are looking to improve their employment situation.  With the National Unemployment Rate reaching 10.2% in October can you really afford not to make yourself more valuable?

Copying formulas in Excel is a relatively simple operation – unless you need to copy down through dozens or even hundreds of cells. Here’s a foolproof little trick that will knock out the task for you.

Excel provides a number of ways to copy formulas. You can use Excel’s Auto Fill feature or, as an alternative, select the cells you want to copy to, enter the formula in the active cell, and then press [Ctrl][Enter]. These methods are fine for copying formulas down a column of cells — unless the column extends down hundreds of rows.

For example, say Column A in your worksheet lists 100 products and Column B lists the wholesale price of each. You would like to enter a formula that calculates the retail price for each product and displays the results in Column C. Selecting 100 cells is a time-consuming and error-prone process, but you can copy the formula down Column C without having to select the cells. Follow these steps for foolproof cell copying:

1. Click in C2 and enter =B2*300%
2. Press [Ctrl][Enter].
3. Double-click the fill handle (the small black square in the lower-right corner of the cell).

Excel will stop copying the formula when it reaches a row with a blank cell in Column B. To ensure that you copied the formula correctly, click in C1 and then press [Ctrl][Shift][End].  [Source:  http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/msoffice/?p=1688&tag=nl.e056]

Takeaway: As trainers, we sometimes need to get back to the basics—including the words we use. In the first of three articles on effective training language, Bob Potemski explains the importance of using audience-centered words.

Some of the most effective tools we use as trainers are words that are audience-centered, directive, precise, and powerful.  In this series, we’ll be looking at each of these qualities.  Part 1 will cover the first tool: audience-centered language.  In part 2, we’ll address directive language and the importance of precision.  In part 3, we’ll discuss some techniques and methods to keep your training language powerful.
What are my training tools?
I’m about as mechanically adept as a grapefruit.  My dad, on the other hand, has always been good at making things, fixing things, and otherwise working with his hands.  During a recent visit, as he and I perused some woodworking magazines, he made a comment about the quality and expense of the tools used by the pros.

Dad’s observation caused me to think about my job as a professional trainer, and it also made me look hard at the tools I use to do my job.  I realized that professional trainers have a distinct advantage over cabinetmakers, dentists, carpenters, mechanics, and other workers.  While many at the top of their fields pay top dollar to buy the best tools, and do so gladly, trainers don’t have to.  Our most powerful tool doesn’t cost a penny.

Words are free
As trainers, we deal with ideas, knowledge, and concepts.  These things are important, and we can’t train without them, but they’re not the foundation of our work.  To assemble these raw materials and build our training sessions, the tools we use are words.  And since words are free, it doesn’t cost us any more to use the best tools—the best words—for the job than it does to slide by with ones that aren’t up to standard.  What we say from the front of the room carries weight by virtue of our position there, so it’s imperative that we use the best possible language to communicate with our students.

Audience-centered language
Audience-centered language puts the audience first and directs all actions toward them.  Let’s say that you’re teaching a class on using a spreadsheet program.  It’s very common for trainers to demonstrate features in such a scenario by saying:

“If I want to select this cell, I put my mouse pointer here and click.”

You should take note of two features of this phrase:

1. The action is not directed toward the audience; it’s directed toward the trainer.  It’s the trainer who is placing the mouse pointer and the trainer who is selecting the cell.  While on the surface this may not seem to be a big deal, it really is, because your audience will always respond more favorably to language directed toward them.  It makes your training seem more relevant and geared toward their needs—and it gives the students a reason to invest themselves in what you’re saying.
2. The phrase is conditional, because it begins with “if.”  “If” constructions are weak because they imply a degree of doubt or uncertainty.  By saying ”if,”you’re diminishing the importance of your point by subtly lowering the probability of its occurrence.  A stronger construction would be:  “When you want to select this cell, put your mouse pointer here and click.”

   This gives your audience the message, again subtly, that what you’re telling them is important and that it’s something they’ll need to do again and again.  Some of the most effective tools we use as trainers are words that are audience-centered, directive, precise, and powerful.  In this series, we’ll be looking at each of these qualities.  Part 1 will cover the first tool: audience-centered language. Students who come to your training sessions are sometimes there under protest.  It’s not that they don’t appreciate the value of the training; it’s just that they’ve got an awful lot to do back at their desks.

Such students are often skeptical and make constant value judgments as to what constitutes the best use of their time.  They ask themselves, “Am I better off here or back at the office?”   So you, as a trainer, must continuously provide a high level of value throughout the training session.

More to the point, you have to make sure the audience sees the value of what you’re teaching.  The audience’s perception is a direct result of your presentation of the material, which in turn depends heavily on the language you choose.

Say it like you mean it
Trainers often make the mistake of not wanting to seem too assertive.  But remember that these students (or their bosses) have paid good money for this training; what you have to say to them is important.

You’d never say to your son or daughter, “You might want to consider looking both ways before you cross the street.” You’d say, “Always look both ways!”  Your immediate goal is to get a very specific message across to an audience—in this case, your child—who has other things on his or her mind.  Sound familiar?

Unfortunately, the conditional “You might want to consider” language of the first example is very common in training.  As a trainer, you have to be aware of the many demands clamoring for your audience’s attention and choose an approach that shows them the importance of what you have to say.  When you use conditional language, you give the impression that you aren’t completely sold on it yourself.  If you don’t think what you’re saying is important, neither will your audience.

So the next time you’re describing a simple task such as accessing Windows’ shortcut menu, don’t present your students with this lukewarm introduction to the feature:  “If you want to save a little time, you may want to try out Windows’ easy shortcut menu.”  Of course they want to save time.  Just say, “To save a little time, access basic Office commands by right-clicking on a Word document icon.”  You get across a lot more information, and your audience can sense your confidence as a trainer.

Precision
So far we’ve discussed effective, audience-centered, and direct language as a tool for improving communication.  Precision with words is another hallmark of a polished and professional presentation.

Precise training language attaches a degree of importance to facts or concepts that can help students process and remember the information.  Consider a training session on the Windows Registry.  Telling your audience, “There are five key concepts to remember about the Registry” is far more effective than saying, “There are a few things about the Registry that would be a good idea for you to know.”  The precision of telling them about “five key concepts” facilitates the following three activities:

• List making
• Note taking
• Memorization

Precise language usually grabs students’ attention; they want to make sure they’ve heard everything you said.  They double-check their notes by asking you to repeat the information, or they check with you during the next break.  Using precise language also gives them the message that you’re prepared, polished, and organized.  Finally, it tells them that what you’re saying is important and therefore deserves their attention.

In this series we’ve discussed the power of language in motivating students.  In Part 1, “Not all training tools are free, but the language of training is—so use it correctly,” we looked at audience-centered language.  In Part2 , “No ‘ifs’ about it:  Use direct and precise language to grab students’ attention,” we discussed the use of directive and precise language.  In this article, we’ll look at putting these language tools to work to present the most powerful information possible to your students.
Audience-centered language
Audience-centered language ensures that the audience receives the benefit or result of the action. It includes students in the learning process and shows them that you have their best interests in mind.

• Your first tool is replacing the phrase “if I” with “when you” in each and every demonstration you perform.  Students don’t attend training to verify that you know the subject; they’re there to learn it for themselves. Include them in the process by sending the message that the concept under discussion is indeed something that’s relevant to, important to, and directed at them.
• The second tool at your disposal is the use of examples.  You probably have a set of examples and illustrations that you use regularly for each topic you teach.  If you don’t have a ready arsenal of examples, create a list. Using examples helps you to train consistently.  Maintaining that consistency will increase your effectiveness.

Directive language
Directive language calls the audience to action and reinforces the importance of the concept you’re teaching. Your best tools for this type of language are active phrases such as:

• “Turn to page five.”
• “Add this definition to the glossary.”
• “Write this down.”

Avoid passive, apologetic, conditional constructions such as:

• “If you would…”
• “You might want to…”

These weak phrases send the message that participation is optional.  Choose active phrases instead to show your audience that what you’re saying applies to them.  To get the most from the training, they need to pay attention to what’s being said or demonstrated.

Precise language
Precise language helps your audience remember what you said by making it easier for them to make lists and take notes.  Your first tool for increasing precision is the numbered list.  Prepare your training material with an eye toward building in a set of lists that stand out when you present the information.  Actually say the specific number of items on the list when you introduce it.  For example, “There are three important concepts at work here.”  It will help your audience even more when you tell them in your introduction that you’ll be doing this, so they’ll know exactly what to look for to maximize their training experience.

Precise language also helps participants see differences and distinctions between similar concepts.  I continually hear new trainers describe something as  “kind of like” something else.  If I, as your trainer, tell you that “A is kind of like B,” you have an incomplete picture of how A and B relate to each other.  In fact, that kind of comparison creates confusion.  Be more precise in describing the difference between A and B.  Say, for example, “A is different from B because… and B is different from A because…”

Another way to increase precision in your speaking is to learn the sequence of your training material inside and out, forever banishing the word “later” from your presentation vocabulary.  Here’s why:  I began to see much higher evaluations from my students when I stopped saying,  “We’ll be covering that later.”  I replaced that tired phrase with sentences that told my students when to look for the information to which I was referring.  Phrases such as, “We’ll talk about that topic in our first segment after lunch,” and “That’s covered in the second half of day two” clarifies your schedule and gives your students a signpost for when to watch for things.

Practice makes perfect
Now you’re ready to put your language tools to use in your upcoming training sessions.  Here are some activities that will boost your confidence.

• Videotape (or at least audiotape) yourself. Play the tape back, and listen for one bad habit at a time.  For example, try to catch all the utterances of “kind of” the first time through, all the “laters” next, and so on.  As you find each one, look at the way it affects the power, polish, and precision of your message.
• Find a partner. Share these tips with a colleague, then commit to helping each other improve.  Sit in on each other’s sessions, practice (yes, practice) together, and critique each other.  Your goals will be congruent since you both know what you’re looking for.
• Listen to the “experts.” Listen to others who speak for a living, be they politicians, TV newscasters, preachers, or teachers.  Listen for how their messages could be improved by applying the things you’ve learned.
• Read aloud to yourself. Find a book that contains a passage you find to be exceptionally well written.  It can be fiction or nonfiction, technical or entertaining.  The content doesn’t matter.  My only caution is to avoid material written in dialects, such as Huckleberry Finn.  Read that passage aloud verbatim to yourself every night.  You will train your ear as to what good prose sounds like, which in turn will make it easier for you to hear your own points of development.

Applying these tools as a matter of habit takes practice.  Then again, so does turning a pile of dead trees into a beautiful piece of furniture.  In both cases, using the best tools for the job will always give you the best results.  Pay close attention to the type of audience you have in your classroom, and choose your language style and words carefully based on your students’ needs.

  With unemployment as high as it is currently, sending out your resume has become a full time job for some.  I have had a number of family and friends all ask me to look over their resumes (I guess being employed qualifies you to review resumes), and a few of the resumes I saw needed some serious help.  So to help them fix their resumes I started looking around for templates and I found some very good and free (if your sending out your resume, you probably aren’t in a position to be more than you have to), and found some very good ones being offered on the Microsoft website (in partnership with monster.com) for MS Office.  The templates can be found on the Microsoft Office Online page (LINK: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/FX103504051033.aspx). 

The page breaks the templates down by resume type (Basic, Entry level / College student, Experienced Professional, Job-Specific, Career move, Academic).  Just click on the resume type your looking for and then select from one of the 4 templates for each category. 

    Since the templates are being “Powered by monster.com”, you will see a couple of links in Office (only while you are using that specific template) pointing giving you the option to post the resume directly to the monster.com site.  If you use monster.com, then that’s an extra help, however, if you don’t use monster all you have to do is just ignore the links, as you are still able to save and print the resume itself without any monster.com labels on your resume.

     When you open the template you will see a Joe Doe type set up with some made up information, all you need to do is use that as your guide and over ride that information with your resume information.

     If your in the need of getting Microsoft Office, one option to consider is downloading the new beta version of Microsoft Office 2010 (LINK: http://us2.office2010beta.microsoft.com/default.aspx?culture=en-US).  The beta includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, One Note, Publisher, Access. The beta version of Office 2010 will expire in October 2010, which gives you a full version of Office for free (Legally), for almost an entire year.

Ya se puede descargar gratis Microsoft Office 2010 en español y no hemos podido resistir la tentación de probarlo cuanto antes. Dados los numerosos cambios que Microsoft ha introducido en su nuevo Windows 7, es lógico que existiese cierta curiosidad por conocer qué novedades han incluido los de Redmond en esta nueva entrega de su suite ofimática. ¿Han mejorado Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook y demás respecto a Office 2007? Comprobémoslo en el siguiente análisis.

Primeras impresiones

De entrada, el aspecto de las aplicaciones no difiere demasiado de la versión anterior de Office. Pero claro está que hay unas cuantas variaciones, más pequeñas en unos casos y muy significativas en otros. Todos han adoptado plenamente la interfaz Ribbon, de modo que el manejo se vuelve mucho más intuitivo. En lugar de desplegar los habituales menús contextuales, ahora las herramientas se aglutinan en una banda inferior. La gran mayoría llevan un icono asociado, de modo que identificarlas es mucho más fácil.

De modo similar actúa el botón Office. Situado en la parte superior izquierda de todos los programas, aglutina las principales funciones del menú Archivo. Al pulsarlo, aparece una nueva pantalla con los comandos comunes: cargar o salvar el documento, imprimirlo o compartirlo por correo electrónico o como entrada de blog. Una vez más, los iconos ayudan a reconocer ágilmente para qué sirve cada uno de ellos.

Edición de imágenes

Es una de las novedades más llamativas en Office 2010. Además de la inserción de imágenes desde archivo, ahora se nos permite capturarlas y editarlas sin necesidad de usar software adicional (como Photoshop o GIMP). Especialmente práctica resulta la herramienta de capturar pantalla, que con un solo clic permite insertar la imagen (completa o recortada a nuestro gusto) de cualquier ventana activa en Windows. Muy útil a la hora de redactar tutoriales o manuales técnicos, por ejemplo. O agilizar el flujo de trabajo cuando se trabaja con imágenes de la web.

Incluso se les puede aplicar varios efectos y filtros artísticos. Podemos insertar grano de película, trazos de pincel o desenfocar la imagen. Cada uno de ellos dispone de varios parámetros de configuración para ajustar el resultado. Pero sólo es posible aplicar uno al mismo tiempo, así que no podremos combinar varias “capas” como en programas específicos de edición de imagen. De todos modos, sí que es posible realizar ajustes básicos de brillo, contraste o saturación.

Y ojo con la opción de eliminar el fondo en las imágenes, que es realmente atractiva. Permite recortar una zona de la foto sin necesidad de realizar complicadas selecciones, pero al mismo tiempo con resultados muy satisfactorios. Y con apenas un par de clics de ratón.

Live Preview

Introducir la función Live Preview en todo el conjunto de programas es otro de los aciertos de Office 2010. Ésta nos ofrece una previsualización en tiempo real del resultado que ofrecen determinadas herramientas. Por ejemplo, a la hora de aplicar los retoques de foto comentados anteriormente. También a la hora de copiar y pegar, un alivio para los que nos hacemos un lío con las distintas opciones (que si combinar formato, que si mantener formato original y demás).

Word: compatibilidad con OpenOffice

Aparte de todas las mejoras ya mencionadas, las aplicaciones también se han reforzado de forma individual. Word 2010 ha dado el paso adelante y desde ahora también acepta documentos en ODF. Es decir, el formato nativo de editores de texto de código abierto, como por ejemplo el popular OpenOffice. Además, también puede abrir o salvar modificaciones en documentos PDF.

Como novedad incluye un sistema de seguridad que se activa automáticamente al cargar archivos descargados desde Internet. Cuando abrimos un documento que hemos recibido por correo electrónico, Word impide que realicemos ningún tipo de edición sobre él a menos que desactivemos su modo seguro.

PowerPoint: edición de vídeo

Insertar archivos de vídeo no debería suponer demasiadas complicaciones en PowerPoint 2010, pues las herramientas ofrecen bastante versatilidad a la hora de editar las imágenes en movimiento. Así podemos corregir el contraste y el color, recortar la duración, insertar fundidos y aplicar algunos efectos artísticos. Nuevas animaciones y paletas de gráficos SmartArt (que también encontramos en los otros integrantes de Office 2010) completan su lista de novedades reseñables.

Outlook: lavado de cara y chat integrado

La inclusión de la interfaz Ribbon, junto al cómodo botón Office, hacen de Outlook 2010 un programa más asequible. El uso de menús en formato cinta y los iconos de referencia visual nos permiten encontrar rápidamente las distintas opciones. Modificar la configuración de las cuentas de correo o imprimir un mensaje resulta ahora bastante más sencillo.

Pero la mejora estrella en Outlook es sin lugar a dudas su nuevo chat integrado. A través de él podemos iniciar conversaciones de mensajería instantánea con nuestros contactos, exactamente igual que hacemos en Gmail. También es posible comunicarse mediante llamadas de voz, pero de momento la opción de videoconferencia no se encuentra disponible.

Excel: gráficos pequeños en celdas

De Excel 2010 destaca sobre todo la inclusión de los Sparklines o gráficos en miniatura. Cuando incrustamos una tabla con valores numéricos, es posible añadir una pequeña interpretación gráfica de los mismos que apenas ocupe una celda. Con ello conseguimos visualizar la evolución de los datos insertados o verificar la relación entre pérdidas y ganancias.

Otras mejoras

Las herramientas de traducción reaparecen en todas las aplicaciones del paquete, así como un corrector ortográfico que aspira a resultar más exacto. En principio, las búsquedas de texto también deberían ser más rápidas y detalladas, aunque a primera vista se desenvuelve de forma similar a las versiones anteriores.

Aunque lo que quizás muchos estén deseando oír es que, en efecto, Office 2010 tiene un funcionamiento ágil y fluido. Pese a que se ha mejorado la interfaz gráfica y se han integrado algunas aplicaciones avanzadas (Live Preview o los filtros de imagen), cualquiera de los programas consume menos recursos que sus versiones anteriores. Incluso en un equipo con Windows Vista y lo justo en memoria RAM es posible trabajar sin interrupciones ni largos tiempos de carga. Sólo esa mejora ya conseguirá que muchos usuarios den la bienvenida a Office 2010.

À primeira vista, o Office 2007 foi uma grande reformulação. Ela me fez pensar na curva de adaptação aos novos menus e no novo modo de interagir com uma ferramenta que uso no trabalho e em casa.

Gostei muito da mudança que foi feita em todos os aplicativos do pacote de escritório, mas, claro, existem algumas ressalvas e pontos que poderiam ser melhores ou diferentes.

Semana passada, recebi um convite para experimentar o Office 2010, o próximo grande lançamento da Microsoft e fui rapidamente baixar a versão beta do pacote.

Atenção: Trata de uma versão beta que pode apresentar falhas e é disponibilizada justamente para que profissionais e entusiastas possam testar e ajudar no desenvolvimento da versão final que será comercializada. Esta coluna irá retratar algumas das novidades e minhas primeiras impressões do pacote.

Aparência reformulada
A primeira mudança no novo programa é sua aparência. O Office 2010 é muito parecido com a versão 2007. Chama a atenção a “morte” do botão do “Office” – aquele botão redondo com o logotipo que fica no canto superior esquerdo dos aplicativos – justamente uma das grandes novidades da suíte 2007.

Como pode ser visto na imagem acima, o botão foi substituído por uma aba chamada File que abriga basicamente as mesmas coisas que o botão do Office, porém com uma organização diferente que ocupa a tela inteira quando clicada.
A tela de abertura de novos documentos ficou mais visual, com ícones grandes, o que pode ser mais agradável para o usuário.

Controle de versão
Algo que me chamou bastante a atenção no menu File foi a opção Versions dentro do item Info. Pelo visto, teremos um controle de versão dos arquivos criados e editados. O controle de versão é muito útil ao realizar muitas alterações em um documento e, em meio a este processo, acabar perdendo algo relevante. Basta voltar para uma versão anterior e resgatar a informação perdida.

Abas sem grandes mudanças
As outras abas não sofreram grandes mudanças, apenas alguns refinamentos como no antigo mapa do documento, que agora tem o nome de “navigation” e conta com uma caixa de busca como pode ser visto na imagem ao lado.

Criação de abas
A grande novidade no Office 2007 foram os menus em formatos de abas, porém o usuário não tinha condições de criar novas abas e a atribuir a elas as funcionalidades que mais gosta. Isso mudou no Office 2010. Para criar as abas, é preciso entrar no menu File, depois em Options e em Ribbons. Abaixo, há um exemplo de aba que criei com algumas funcionalidades selecionadas aleatoriamente.

Suporte a 64 bits
Esta é uma novidade tardia, pois há muito tempo que temos computadores com processadores de 64 bits e só agora o Office chega a este patamar. Onde mora a vantagem? Quem trabalha com Excel e usa planilhas gigantescas terá melhores condições de trabalho, pois o aplicativo irá rodar mais rapidamente.

Não vi grandes novos recursos no Word, mas um me chamou a atenção: efeitos artísticos em fotos que aplicam mudanças simples, mas bem legais em imagens que são anexadas aos documentos. Claro que não é um recurso que motivaria alguém a comprar o Word, mesmo porque, com um programa grátis como Paint.Net, é possível ter efeitos bem mais avançados.

Também apresenta uma nova funcionalidade que aplica efeitos visuais ao texto como pode ser visualizado na imagem abaixo. O efeito é bem similar ao WordArt, presente no pacote Office desde seus primórdios, mas é mais refinado e não substitui o velho “WordArt” ainda presente na aba Insert.

Notei também a presença de um botão Screenshot na aba Insert, que permite a inserção de imagens presentes na área de transferência do computador. O botão conta com um recurso de captura de tela que minimiza o Word ao ser clicado e permite a captura de uma parte da tela, ideal para quem está fazendo manuais e tutoriais que usam telas de programas.

Power Point
Olhando o Power Point 2010 pela primeira vez, logo notei uma nova aba chamada Transitions, que traz diversas opções de transição de slides. Este recurso não é novo, mas o fato de ganharem uma aba própria os coloca em destaque.

Uma novidade bastante interessante é o recurso de Broadcast do Office 2010. Ele permite transmitir apresentações por meio de um serviço on-line. Após ativar o serviço, o usuário receberá uma URL para fornecer aos seus contatos para que eles assistam a apresentação. Testei o serviço e ele é bem simples e rápido.
O Power Point traz mais recursos multimídia, com novas ferramentas para lidar com arquivos de vídeo. É possível aplicar filtros e recursos básicos de edição.

Excel
Não notei grandes novidades no Excel. Ele é uma ferramenta bem completa. Reparei na existência de uma ferramenta chama Sparklines que traz minigráficos que ficam direto nas células e deixam as planilhas graficamente mais interessantes.

Em um computador de 64 bits usando o Office 2010, o Excel mostrará seu valor para quem trabalha com grandes volumes de dados.

Outlook
Tenho a impressão que o Outlook foi o programa que a Microsoft dedicou maior atenção. Na versão 2007, chamou a atenção o fato de o Outlook não ter recebido o mesmo tratamento estético que o restante do pacote Office, mas o 2010 está totalmente reformulado, com abas como os demais integrantes da família.

Um recurso muito comum para os usuários do Gmail foi incorporado ao Outlook. Agora, é possível agrupar mensagens por “conversas”. Este tipo de agrupamento foi bastante impactante quando surgiu o Gmail e foi muito fácil de acostumar-se a ele. Agora no Outlook, ele deixa o uso do sistema mais familiar para quem se acostumou com o recurso na ferramenta do Google.

A Microsoft lançou uma versão beta pública da sua nova série de aplicativos de escritório, o Office 2010. Para pegar o beta, basta ir até a página oficial de download, clicar em "Get it now" e fazer o login com seu usuário e senha do Windows Live.
A página de download gerará um número serial, e oferece versões em 32 e 64 bits da prévia de seu software. Os tamanhos do arquivo são de 684 MB e 750 MB, respectivamente. Parece grande, mas o download inclui o Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, OneNote, Access, Publisher, InfoPath, SharePoint Workspace, e Communicator.
O Office 2010 funciona perfeitamente no Windows XP Service Pack 3, Windows Vista Service Pack 1, e obviamente no Windows 7. A MS recomenda que as pessoas que já tenham uma versão anterior do Office a desinstalem antes de experimentar a nova versão da suíte, ou melhor ainda: instalar em um sistema de testes, como de praxe.
A Microsoft pretende lançar a versão finalizada e completa no início de 2010.

There are going to be a possibility that you may face a specific installation error with Office 2010 beta version. This error is ‘The language of this installation package is not supported by your system.’ This error occurs when you download the file from the Microsoft Office download Website and extract the files from the installer.

Here is what happens:

• You download the installer.
• You extract the installer by using programs like Universal Extractor or 7-Zip.
• Files from the installer get extracted into a single folder.

Now, when you will attempt to run the installer, you are going to face this issue. The best way to avoid this issue is to directly trigger the installation from the installer without extracting files from it. It worked well for me and am starting to like Office 2010.

Well I have just got out of a meeting with a few different people that are involved with different aspects of my new role, a meet and greet occasion if you will. I have come to the conclusion that with yesterday’s conclusions, I have hit the nail on the head. It would seem that the client wants to develop themselves both technically, and professionally. It would also seem that they want taking to the cutting edge of everything, without having to spend any money or put any effort in. The more time I spend thinking about this; the more it begins to look like a big tick-box exercise.

It is all too common for clients to want wonderful things doing on a shoestring budget – this is something that anybody working IT & Project Management unfortunately must get used to. However, this time, they seem completely unwilling to help their own progression whatsoever. For a while it would seem they have drifted along, fire fighting some issues, ignoring others all together, and not planning or developing anything. This is not acceptable and is something I must make every effort to change, once I have figured out a way to do it quietly – after all if I just let them know that they may have to start working for a living, I’m sure I would have a revolt to deal with!

After a very quick drink last night, I began to outline, for my own benefit, exactly the areas that I think need the most attention. As I did this, I became glad that I am not working on this project to make friends. This I feel would be uneventful. Here is what I came up with:

- Procurement: The current procurement procedures (and I use the term procedures very lightly you understand), are a complete mess. Nobody seems to know who is responsible for what, how things should be correctly ordered, audited, or integrated into the existing system. Speaking only on behalf of the IT Systems, this has led to a very fragmented network, with no standardisation or automated management ability.

- Staffing Structure: Again, the current state of the staffing hierarchy is a complete mess. I made this point very clear this morning and nobody could think of e decent argument – so I think I got my point across. When something new has been bought in without consideration or consultation (due to the lack of procurement procedure), a new job role is normally created along with it. People are bought in on the cheap with the hope that they may have the beginnings of a clue what it is they are doing. Nobody, again, is aware of who is exactly responsible for what, or even who. I can see about a 30% overhead on staffing that could be eliminated immediately. This is going to be a harder point to put across. The meeting his morning was a prime example of both unorganised structure and organisation, there were at least 3 people present who had no need to be there other than to get out of doing something productive themselves. Ironically enough, I did note that these three were the only ones with any real input (albeit irrelevant).

- SLA’s: There is little or no sign of any service level agreements (SLAs) that may greatly benefit the department and company as a whole. I have worked closely with several companies forming and implementing SLA’s (including for educational establishments with the FITS Framework), so this is a key area where I feel I will be able to improve upon.

As I mentioned earlier, I am so very glad that I am not here to make friends, and although now only working through my second day, know that hard times are ahead in the not so distant future. I have another meeting this afternoon with a few advertising specialists. Quite what this has to do with my role and how much use it is going to be to me I will wait and see.
