NASA Joins Microsoft

   Fantastic ! Da, poti avea propiul telescop virtual bazat pe tehnologia Web 2.0 – soft-ul de la Microsoft punand laolalta imagini de la mai multe telescoape spatiale si terestre . Poti face zoom, panning, vedea in raze X si asa mai departe – luna, planetele, nebuloasele sunt la indemana si pot fi explorate lejer ! Motorul grafic pe care se bazeaza soft-ul este Microsoft Visual Experience Engine – destul de pretentios cu calculatorul (procesor puternic, mult RAM si placa video buna), dar merita . Trebuie instalat ulterior si telescopul pentru vizionare – e nemaipomenit !

Estava vendo como andava uma das traduções do xkcd que Mamutti estava fazendo, para me ajudar a entender algumas coisas, alguns nomes bastante incomuns, ele me manda alguns links com fotos de galaxias. Isso me deixo bastante animado em conseguir mais imagens, uma vez que fiquei maravilhado com o que via. Descobri o Microsoft WorldWide Telescope, muito parecido com o Google Earth porém além da Terra é possível observar o espaço. Através do WolrdWide Telescope pode-se ver galaxias, berçários de estrelas, estrelas entre outros.

O que mais me surpreendeu não foi nenhum dos itens citados anteriormente, foi o que nunca achei que estivesse em uma foto. Não sei exatamente o que são porém são muito estranhas. Vejam alguns screens que tirei.

Alguém sabe o que é isso?

Será que o pessoal de ufologia pode dizer? Nasa? Lula? Alguém? Tem mais.

Esse alguém explica?

Microsoft’s Worldwide Telescope is just one example of the types of computer programs our kids will have at their disposal through school.

I really respect Bill Gates for his commitment to education.  It is projects like this that will have both commercial and education benefits.  What a great combination.

If you are on a Windows computer (ok – you knew one limitation was coming) download the software and check out our galaxies, planets and other terrestrial bodies.  I’m not even an astronomy freak and I think this cool.

  Imagina un Google Earth pero con el espacio, pues eso mismo es Microsoft WorldWide Telescope, la mejor manera de flotar por el espacio a través de nuestro ordenador. Esta aplicación nos permitirá acceder a una grandísima base de datos en la que se encuentran más de un terabyte de información acerca del espacio, a la que accederemos en tiempo real a través de internet.

  Mis conocimientos de astronomía no son precisamente altos, pero la posibilidad de poder explorar el universo de una manera tan sencilla y gráfica me parece una idea genial. Podremos explorar entre cientos de colecciones que incluyen las constelaciones, el sistema solar, imágenes del Hubble y otros objetos y estrellas. Todo muy visual y muy fácil de acceder.

  He de decir que lo que personalmente más me ha llamado la atención son los tours. Podremos seleccionar entre unos cuantos, como por ejemplo los agujeros negros en la que, en este caso, un profesor de Harvard realiza una narración mientras vemos un vídeo en el que se nos enseña todo lo relacionado con el tema que hayamos elegido. Evidentemente esto no es instantáneo y cada vez que seleccionemos un tour tendremos que esperar a que este se descargue, lo que no se es si este tour se queda en nuestro ordenador o es simplemente una descarga temporal.

  Otra cosa que me ha fascinado es la posibilidad de conectar nuestro propio telescopio y controlarlo a través de WorldWide Telescope. Supongo que en un futuro, cuando la aplicación tenga más recorrido se nos permitirá tomar nuestras propias imágenes y compartirlas con la comunidad. Esto último bien llevado al terreno de las redes sociales podría ser un buen punto para Microsoft.

  La verdad es que esta iniciativa me ha parecido la mar de interesante, quizás el único problema que le veo ahora mismo es el hecho de que esté en inglés. Si se traslada a todos los idiomas y se le da más publicidad creo que podría ser una gran cosa, pudiendo incluso implementarlo en las escuelas y dejar que los niños jueguen y descubran gracias a internet.

  Microsoft WorldWide Telescope tiene unos requisitos bastante restrictivos, sólo funciona con Windows XP Service Pack 2 o Windows Vista, requiere 1GB de RAM, una tarjeta gráfica con un mínimo de 128MB, DirectX 9.0c y .NET 2.0. Además es completamente gratuito y, por ahora, sólo está en inglés.

Nachdem es Microsoft und Google gelungen ist mit Virtual Earth bzw. Google Maps unseren Globus größtenteils digital abzubilden, ist man in den Microsoft Research Labs bereits dabei den nächsten Schritt zu wagen denn dort blickt man bereits in die unendlichen Weiten des Alls – mit Microsoft WorldWide Telescope (WWT). Das was mit Virtual Earth für die Erde möglich war, soll zukünftig auch für das Weltall möglich sein, so die Entwickler.

Besteht die Möglichkeit die Himmelskörper zu erforschen, sich Sternenkonstellationen aus der Nähe zu betrachten – und das auf sehr beeindruckende Art und Weise? Ja, denn am 12.05.2008 wurde die erste Beta-Release (Spring) von Microsot WWT veröffentlicht und ist ab sofort zum Download verfügbar. Auch die erste SDK ist bereits angekündigt und wird vom Entwicklerteam hoffentlich bald zur Verfügung gestellt.

Das Prinzip hinter WTT ist ähnlich dem von Virtual Earth, Daten werden bei Notwendigkeit einfach geladen und anschließend lokal gespeichert. Das funktioniert bereits bei einer halbwegs guten Internetandbinung hervorragend und sorgt für wahrliches Vergnügen.

Zu den Features zählen umfassende Objektdatenbanken, die Möglichkeit Guided Tours mit Bild und Ton- bzw. Musikuntermalung, wie bspw. eine Sonnenfinsternis zu erleben und riesige Bilddatenbanken wie etwa die der NASA zu durchsuchen. In einem State-of-the-Art UI präsentiert, ist es wirklich ein spannendes Erlebnis sich die Galaxien und Planeten aus der nähe zu betrachten. Die derzeitige Programmversion von MS WWT ist auf jeden Fall einen Blick wert und das nicht nur für begeisterte Hobby-Astronomen.

Despite being mathematically challenged, I’ve always been quite the (amateur) astronomy/astrophysics enthusiast. So imagine my curiosity with all the hype surrounding Microsoft’s upcoming initiative, the WorldWide Telescope. But having recently moved to Linux, I had to find open source alternatives.

And, I’ve found (ok, so finding in this day and age is a tad bit overrated) a couple of really good open source sky mapping programs:

1. Stellarium: This is a planetarium software which means you’ll have a pretty much earth bound perspective of the night sky. Excluding additional plugins or data files, there’s a massive catalogue of over 600,000 stars and a pretty huge number of nebulae as well. The visualization is extremely cool with near realistic depictions of atmospheric conditions and light. For a given point on earth, you can choose how fast time passes, thereby being able to view the night sky in time lapse. I spent close to 4 hours last night trying to figure out the stuff I could do with this brilliant piece of software.

2. Celestia: While Stellarium is the equivalent of gazing at the night sky, Celestia is akin to travelling through space; delivering images of what stars, planets and galaxies would look like up close. The basic program consists of a catalogue of 120,000 stars from the Hipparcos Catalogue. Using key board or mouse controls you can basically travel through the universe (limited by available data) at speeds ranging from 0.001m/s to light years/s. Celestia is a very power and bandwidth hungry software, so I would suggest Stellarium to get a hang of things initially.

Frankly, there’s nothing that puts things into perspective like marveling at the sheer magnitude of the universe and nothing…nothing comes close to the realization that we’re a generation lucky enough to be alive during a time like this; a time when everything seems possible.

Η Microsoft ετοιμάζεται την προσεχή άνοιξη να διαθέσει χωρίς κόστος μια υπηρεσία που θα μπορούσα να την χαρακτηρίσω απλά και κατανοητά σαν ένα Εικονικό Τηλεσκόπιο. Ο χρήστης της υπηρεσίας αυτής θα έχει τη δυνατότητα να ταξιδεύει στον απέραντο γαλαξία μας μέσα από ένα περιβάλλον το οποίο θα προσομοιώνει το χειρισμό και τις λειτουργίες ενός μεγάλου και σύγχρονου τηλεσκοπίου.

Η ιδέα φαίνεται πως είναι εκπληκτική και το ίδιο φαντάζομαι πως θα είναι και το αποτέλεσμα. Η Microsoft αναφέρει ότι ο χρήστης μέσω του WWT (WorldWide Telescope) θα έχει πρόσβαση σε εκατοντάδες Terabytes πληροφοριών από το διάστημα.
