Sitting here at my computer tonight, musing on an important, if not always comfortable, aspect of traditional Aztec thought and its implications. Namely, the concept of “human corn” and the natural humility flowing from that point of view.

“Human Corn” — What Do You Mean?

“Human Corn” — it’s an odd phrase at first glance, especially to those of us raised in a modern, Euro-American society. Boiled down to its essence, it means “people are food.” Food for what? For everything, really. In traditional Aztec thought, humans are food for the gods and food for the Earth.

In his article “Cosmic Jaws,” Dr. David Carrasco notes a saying that survives among some indigenous tribes today in the region, “We eat the Earth, and the Earth eats us.” The Earth was said to have been created from the ever-hungry primordial monster-goddess Cipactli when Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca, transformed into great serpents, squeezed her in half and created the land and the sky from her remains. In exchange for housing and feeding us, She eats us when we die. When we eat of the land, we literally eat death and begin racking up a debt to Cipactli (later honored with the name Tlaltecuhtli, the Earth Lord) for Her bounty.

Cipactli/Tlaltecuhtli isn’t the only deity depicted as eating people. Most famously, Tonatiuh the Sun received the heart sacrifice as food and drink, and Tlacaelel likened Nahua soldiers to tasty warm tortillas, hot from the griddle, destined for the table of the gods. Numerous prayers and songs, some recorded by Sahagun in Book 6 of the Florentine Codex, describe the sacrificed warrior entering the jaws of Tlaltecuhtli, and praise his blessed state as he goes to feed the cosmos.

Other prayers and huehuetlatolli (moral speeches) explicitly describe humans as corn. During the festival month of Tititl, young plants and young children were stretched to encourage them to grow tall and healthy — and for the same purpose. Youthful warriors were likened to the corn god Centeotl, and the strong linkage between corn/crop and war imagery in Aztec religion has long fascinated and puzzled scholars. (See works by David Carrasco and Kay Almere Read, for example.) Over and over again, we see the idea of “being food” as a central part of the Aztec conception of what it means to be human.

The Implications of “Human Corn”

So, what does it mean to incorporate “being food” into the human identity? Well… it means a very different outlook on our place in the world from what a lot of us were probably raised with. It means we’re not exempt from the natural cycle of eating and being eaten that the natural world runs on, and that this is the ordinary, proper mode of things. It’s no curse or aberration that we’re subject to birth and death, it’s merely part of our nature. It also means we’re not the center of the universe — if the Earth is a garden, we’re a crop planted in it, not the gardener. There’s no analogue to the story of Eden and the Abrahamic view of the dominance of humanity over the natural world here.

It also means humility. If we’re not the capstone of creation, the reason for the whole show, it means we need to get over ourselves. We’re just a part of the greater whole, sometimes likened to a household in traditional Nahua thought. No part is indispensable, from plants to animals, from humans to gods. Every being has its part to play, and that should be honored and acknowledged, but in its proper measure. Perhaps instead of whispering to ourselves, “Remember, thou art mortal!” as the Romans did, Aztec Recons should think, “Remember, thou art corn!” when we’re tempted to hubris.

Finally, it also imparts a certain amount of meaning and purpose to miquiztli (death). When we die, we nourish life and we pay the debt we owe to the Earth for sustaining us. Depending on your understanding of the gods and how the universe works, this can be interpreted in many, many ways as best suits your metaphysical and theological perspective. Whether interpreted poetically, mystically, or literally, the idea of “human corn” still holds valuable meaning in a modern setting.

Corn, Plate 27 of the Codex Borgia

I have discovered online a very interesting classic journal article about Aztec autosacrifice by the esteemed Dr. Zelia Nuttall. Written in 1904, it lacks the benefits of recent scholarship, but it still remains a keystone work in understanding the specific form of autosacrifice that is bloodletting from the ears. Dr. Nuttall provides detailed description and discussion of the various specific forms of ear sacrifice, accompanied by extensive translation from numerous codices and photographs of pictorial depictions of this type of penance. If you are interested in learning more about how the Aztecs traditionally performed ear sacrifice, I strongly recommend following the link to read the article. Some highlights of this article are discussions of the close association of ear autosacrifice with the gods Tezcatlipoca, Mixcoatl, Huitzilopochtli, and Quetzalcoatl. Of particular interest during this veintana of Quecholli is the description of a special type of autosacrifice attributed to Mixcoatl, the God of the Hunt. The article includes several forms of ear sacrifice linked to specific veintanas, including Quecholli and Panquetzaliztli. Additionally, it describes a sacrifice offered on the day Nahui Ollin, the daysign of the current Sun, the Sun Four Movement.

Also interesting is Dr. Nuttall’s analysis of the jaguar/ocelot imagery surrounding Tezcatlipoca and his connection to the constellation Citlal-Xonecuilli, which is known today as either Ursa Major or Minor (a little help on which one, Shock?).  [Edit -- It's Ursa Major.  Thanks, Shock!]  Instead of a bear, the Aztecs saw the constellation as a jaguar and a symbol of Tezcatlipoca. It reminded them of the time when Tezcatlipoca, acting as the First Sun, was chased from the sky by Quetzalcoatl and descended to Earth in the form of a great jaguar to devour the giants, the first people. That is why the constellation seems to swoop from its peak in the sky down to the horizon, reenacting this myth every day in the night sky.

My only irritation with this article is a few points where the good doctor strays from proper anthropological neutrality to make disparaging comments about the practice of autosacrifice, and to congratulate the Spaniards on stamping it out. I’ll admit it, I do derive a certain sly pleasure in using this article to help modern Aztec Reconstructionist pagans in reviving this religious practice!

Jaguar Vessel

Hola, como ya sabemos se hacerca el día de muertos. Así que decidí hacer una entradita de esto. Pues estara resumida pero traera lo principal.

Primero que nada el día de muertos es una TRADICION MEXICANA, que se puede considerar como una celebración anual de raices prehispánicas y modalidad cristiana.

El 1 y 2 de Noviembre se celebra esta conmemoración hacia los muertos, en este día se recuerdan a todos aquellos que se han adelantado a la vida después de la muerte. Así pues las personas llevan flores a las tumbas y las arreglan segun con lo que le gustaba al difunto. También otras personas hacen lo que son los altares. En esta época aparecen materiales muy básicos que solo se presentan en esta etapa del año, ejemplo de estos son las calaveritas de dulce, el pan de muerto y el candelero de cerámica.

El origen del ahora llamado día de muertos es incierto, se remonta según algunos estudiosos hasta el año 800 a.c. en el llamado Festival de muertos, celebrado entre los aztecas durante los meses de julio y agosto, como una fiesta para celebrar el final de la cosecha de maíz, frijol, garbanzo y calabaza, que formaban parte de la ofrenda a la diosa Mictecacihuatl. Esta Diosa, reina de Chinahmictlan era la guardiana del noveno nivel del infierno, llamado Mictlan.

Algunos aseguran que la tradición del festival se mezcla con la costumbre prehispánica de enterrar a los muertos con objetos, comida y ofrendas para su viaje a la otra vida. La tradición nace de la creencia que al morir, las personas pasan al reino de Mictlán, donde tienen que estar un tiempo para después ir al cielo o Tlalocan. Para el viaje, nuestros seres queridos necesitan comida y agua para el camino; veladoras para alumbrarse; monedas, para pagar al balsero que los cruza por el río, antes de llegar a Mictlán y un palo espinoso para ahuyentar al diablo.

A la llegada de los españoles, estas creencias fueron adaptadas al calendario cristiano y se celebran el 1 y 2 de Noviembre. El primero se celebra el Día de Todos los Santos, dedicado a los niños y el 2 al resto de las personas queridas, siendo estos los únicos días en que las almas tienen permiso para regresar a visitar a sus seres queridos. De manera que es, en realidad una fiesta de bienvenida para aquellos que se extrañan.

I came across an interesting article by Alan R. Sandstrom on FAMSI the other night. It is a summary of his observation of a modern Huaxtec ceremony honoring one of the Tlaloque, a rain spirit named Apanchanej (literally, “Water Dweller”). This festival took place in 2001 on Postectli, a mountain in the Huasteca region of Mexico.

A bit of background — the Huaxtecs are an ancient people, neighbors of the Aztecs. Like the Aztecs, they spoke and still speak Nahuatl, making them one of the numerous Nahua peoples. To this day they still live in their traditional home, one of the more rugged and mountainous sections of Mexico. They have retained more of their indigenous culture than some of the other tribes that survived the Conquest due to their remoteness and the rough terrain that inhibited colonization. This includes many pre-Conquest religious traditions, even some sacrificial practices.

Some Highlights Related To Modern Practice

This article includes discussion of several details of particular interest to Reconstructionist Pagans looking for firmer grounding and learning from the living practice of traditional religion. Of special note are photographs of the altar at the shrine on Postectli, including explanation of the symbols and objects on it (photograph 12). Also, the practice of creating and honoring sacred paper effigies of the deities involved in the ceremony is explored in some depth. Paper has traditionally been a sacred material among the Nahua tribes, and paper representations of objects in worship is a very old practice indeed. Additionally, there is some detail on tobacco and drink offerings, as well as the use of music and the grueling test of endurance inherent in the extended preparation and performance of this ritual.

Contemporary Animal Sacrifice

A key part of the article’s focus is on the modern practice of animal sacrifice and blood offerings that survive among the Huaxteca today. These forms of worship have by no means been stamped out among the indigenous people of Mexico, as Sandstrom documents. (Yes, there are photographs in case you are wondering — scholarly, not sensationalistic.) Offering turkeys is something that has been done since long before the Conquest, and from what I have read they remain a popular substitute for humans in Mexico. It’s fitting if you know the Nahuatl for turkey — if I remember right, it’s pipil-pipil, which translates to something like “the little nobles” or “the children.” If I’m wrong, someone please correct me, as I don’t have my notes on the Nahuatl for this story handy at the moment. They got that name because in the myth of the Five Suns, the people of one of the earlier Suns were thought to have turned into turkeys when their age ended in a violent cataclysm, and they survive in this form today. I doubt the connection would have been lost on the Aztecs when offering the birds.

Closing Thoughts: Strange Coincidences

Reading this article was fascinating for both the glimpse into surviving native religion and the strange coincidences in my own practices and experiences. For one, the people of Puyeyaco were using ixiptla (god images) that were paintings of divinities on small, cardlike pieces of paper. Sandstrom was particularly struck by this, as nearly identical “cards” have been discovered buried in sacred boxes in the Templo Mayor from hundreds of years ago. This is a very old practice that has survived into the present day. I found it striking as well, as it is something that I do! I started doing this long before I read this study or heard of anything like it. Why? It just seemed right, especially as the traditional codices are usually formatted into panel-like boxes, with the actual pictures inside. Seeing that, I thought it seemed proper to paint single sacred images onto small, panel-like cards. I also store them wrapped in cloth and enclosed, something still done today.

Another odd parallel is a particular type of libation the worshippers offered to Apanchanej. In passing, Sandstrom mentions offering soft drinks to the Teotl, in addition to the traditional alcoholic beverages. In July I had an occasion to go sailing, and we were having violent storms off the coast of Massachusetts. I was caught rather by surprise, and as I was in a hotel at the time with my family, I couldn’t do a more “normal” offering to Tlaloc to ask for good, safe weather. I was sitting on the balcony watching the lightning rage over the ocean, wracking my brain for something to do. We had beer, and we had Mountain Dew. The beer just seemed wrong for some reason, but I know that pulque, the main drink offering made by the Aztecs, is a very sweet liquor… so… backed into a corner, I decided to offer Tlaloc some Mountain Dew. It’s sweet, it’s delicious, and it’s even green, a color traditionally associated with Him. It kinda seemed right.

I poured some out on the rocks on the shore and whispered a prayer to Him (with a note that this was the best I could do under these circumstances, and if He didn’t like it, I sure didn’t mean offense). Apparently He enjoyed it, for the weather was beautiful the next day. We had a brief cloudburst sailing back to the shore that was awe-inspiring rather than terrifying, and I stood on the rear of the boat gazing up at the towering clouds above and the boiling ocean around me, feeling the wind coiling around and hearing the distant rumble of thunder. There was even a rainbow as the stormlet ended. Tlaloc in the storm, His wife Chalchiuhtlicue in the sea, and Ehecatl in the wind, all together.

For bonus irony points, I later realized the humor in the name of the drink I shared with Him — Tlalocan, the home of the god, is traditionally said to be in a great mountain, and the mountains themselves are home to His ministers and the source of rain. I had to laugh.

At any rate, it’s interesting to see that this same alternative to pulque that I fumbled my way to in a pinch is something done by the very people who have worshipped the Teteo for centuries.

To wrap things up, Sandstrom’s article was a lucky find and is a valuable glimpse into modern-day indigenous practice of the same religion that Aztec Reconstructionists seek to honor as well. I strongly recommend stopping by FAMSI and checking it out, as my flyby overview of it can’t possibly contain everything of interest. On one last detail, I strongly encourage you to read the footnotes on this one — a lot more valuable info is hidden in those.

I think it’s time for retelling another myth, Cehualli-style. Chronologically, this one follows immediately after the tale about how Quetzalcoatl recovered the bones from Mictlantecuhtli in the great cycle of creation myths of the Aztecs. In this story, the age of the Fifth Sun has just begun, and the humans have just been brought back to life. So now there’s dry land, light, and living people again, but the recreation of the world isn’t done yet, for the people have nothing to eat. The legend of the Origin of Corn shows how the Teteo solve this last problem and complete the restoration of Earth.

The Origin Of Corn

The Teteo stepped back to admire their work. They looked up to the sky and saw the Sun, radiant and majestic as He moved across the turquoise-blue sky. They looked down below and saw the jade-green earth, full of life, bounded on all sides by the Sacred Waters of the sea. They saw the newly-reborn humans, gazing back at Them with awe and gratitude for what They had done. Then the gods realized that Their work wasn’t done yet.

“We’ve brought the people back to life, but it will all be a waste if they don’t have something to eat! Mictlantecuhtli and Mictlancihuatl will Themselves die of laughter if the bones They covet so badly return to Them this quickly,” said Xolotl, shaking His canine face in dismay.

“The different kinds of food that we’d given the people in the previous four Suns won’t be right for these, for these are true humans,” said Tlaloc, the Lord of Rain, His voice a rumbling growl like a jaguar. “We need to find the real corn for our new servants.” His words were correct, for in the past ages of the world, only lesser plants that mimicked corn existed, just like how real humans weren’t yet made.

Quetzalcoatl stroked His feathery beard, deep in thought, His eyes downcast. Right when He was about to speak, His gaze fell upon a tiny red ant… which was carrying a single kernel of corn. “I think We may have just found the true corn…” And with that, He descended back to the mortal world, leaving Tlaloc and the rest of the gods to watch what happened next.

“Wise ant, where did you find this corn?” Quetzalcoatl politely asked the tiny creature. The ant looked up at the god, surprised to see a Teotl talking to her, but she didn’t answer. Instead, she just kept on walking, not relaxing her grip on the corn at all. Undeterred, Quetzalcoatl turned himself into a black ant and followed after her.

At last they came to the foot of a soaring mountain. The red ant walked up to a tiny crack at the base and gestured to it with her antennae. “This is the Mountain of Sustenance. Corn, beans, chili peppers, and everything else that’s good to eat is stored inside.” Quetzalcoatl thanked her for her guidance and entered the mountain. Once inside, He gathered up some corn and brought it back to the heavenly world of Tamoanchan.

The rest of the gods were delighted by Quetzalcoatl’s discovery. “Our servants will live after all. Quick, let’s give them the corn!” They said. Quetzalcoatl took the maize and chewed it until it was soft, then gently placed it in the mouths of the newborn humans who were weak with hunger. Strength returned to the people, who praised the gods.

Meanwhile, Tlaloc and His ministers, the Tlaloque, were walking around the Mountain of Sustenance, examining it. “Now, what should We do with this?” He murmured to Himself, a hint of greed in His thunderous voice.

Quetzalcoatl broke open the mountain and admired the bounty within. “We’ll give it to the people so they’ll thrive and worship Us.”

Tlaloc frowned, His long jaguar teeth showing frighteningly. “No, I think I have a better idea.” And He suddenly ordered the Tlaloque to scoop up the food inside, and together They spirited it back to Tlaloc’s own realm, Tlalocan. Tlaloc admired His prize, running His fingers through the piles of food. “Why should I just give the humans all this for free? I should get something in return. I’ll water the earth and make the food grow, but only if they worship Me and offer blood. If they don’t, then I’ll send drought and storms until they keep their end of the bargain again.”

And that is how the right kinds of crops for humans came to be.

Here’s the video of the Aztec dance performance of part of the story of Quetzalcoatl’s descent to Mictlan, the Land of the Dead, to retrieve the precious bones so that humans can live again. It’s a nighttime performance, which is a perfect fit for the setting. Mictlan was described as a place of perpetual darkness, coldness, and night. The lighting is mostly from the bonfire and a few lamps, so it’s very moody looking and the shadows and light accentuate the motions and costumes of the danzantes.

Quetzalcoatl is portrayed by the dancer in the birdlike, beaked mask who’s carrying the serpent, while Mictlantecuhtli is played by the dancer with the lion’s-mane-like headdress with a skull in the center of the fan of feathers. Mictlantecuhtli’s servants are creatively portrayed by children in skeletal costumes. You’re probably wondering “Why kids? That’s not scary!” I think they’re echoing the myths that portray Tlaloc’s helpers, the Tlaloque, as miniature versions of the goggle-eyed Rain God. If Tlaloc’s assistants are mini-Tlalocs, then why not have the Lord of the Dead’s be miniature Mictlantecuhtlis? Either way, it’s an amusing casting choice.

ACTUALMENTE LOS OFRENADAS PREHISPANICAS YA NO SE PRESENTAN DE ESA MANERA O EN ALGUNOS CASOS, ESTAN DESAPARECIDAS EN SU TOTALIDAD. LAS FECHAS EN LAS QUE SE REALIZABA ESTE FESTEJO DE HONRAR A LOS DIFUNTOS PARA LOS PEQUEÑOS ERA EN EL MES DE JULIO Y EL DE LOS ADULTOS EN AGOSTO, ESTA FIESTA ERA RESPETADA POR QUE PARA ELLOS EL HONRAR A LOS DIFUNTOS ERA FUE IMPORTANTE.
A LA LLEGADA DE LOS ESPAÑOLES, ESTAS OFRENDAS PERDIERON SU CARATERISTICAS PRINCIPALES Y EN GENERAL LAS FECHAS S EMODIFICARON UNICAMENTE A LOS DIAS 1° Y 2 DE NOVIEMBRE COMO HOY EN DIA SE EFECTUAN, ASI TAMBIEN EL LLAMADO TZOMPANTLI FUE DESECHADO Y EN SU LUGAR SE PRESENTAN LAS FAMOSAS “CALAVERITAS DE DULCE”, SE LE AGREGAN LAS IMAGENES RELIGIOSAS Y NUEVOS ALIMENTOS.

EL OBEJETIVO QUE MOTIVO A LA PRESENTACION DE ESTA OFRENDA FUE PARA QUE LA GENTE CONOZCA UNA PEQUEÑA MUESTRA DE LO QUE ERAN LAS OFRENDAS Y TUMBAS PREHISPANICAS Y QUE ESTE EVENTO DEL FESTEJO DEL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS, COMO ES LLAMADO, SE REALIZABA DESDE EPOCAS DE ANTAÑO, TENIENDO EVIDENCIAS EN LOS AZTECAS, TOTONACAS Y GRUPOS NAHUAS.

OFRENDA Y CAMINO AL MICLAN

Jaja hola chairas y chairos, ¿cómo la están pasando?, espero y bien; bueno en conmemoración del día de muertos (aquí en México) y tratando de expandir un poco más el conocimiento de tan ilustres lectores me di a la tarea de investigar un poco acerca del origen de tan ancestral día y algunas de sus características, espero y lo disfruten:

La celebración del dia de muertos data de muchisimo tiempo antes de la llegada de los españoles a américa

El origen del día de muertos se remonta a la época prehispánica de nuestro país, en la cual diversos grupos indígenas como los  Mayas, Aztecas, etc. celebraban diversas festividades en conmemoración de todos sus ancestros, los cuales se creía, adquirían un poder superior al dejar de existir en este mundo. Se tienen registros de al menos 6 festividades con este motivo, sin embargo resaltan 2 sobre todas estas, la primera era Miccaihultontli, en esta se celebra  a los niños inocentes muertos y se celebraba durante el noveno y el décimo mes del calendario. La segunda de estas fiestas era Hueymiccailhuitly, en esta se celebraba a los muertos adultos y se caracterizaba por la realización importantes rituales, tenía lugar a los dos meses posteriores de Miccaihultontli.

Cabe señalar que la interpretación de la muerte que se tenia era muy diferente a la que el cristianismo impuso en años posteriores, dándole un sentido de dualidad a lo que significaba dejar este mundo, no podía existir la vida sin la muerte. Para nuestros antepasados la muerte no tenia una connotación moral como la de la religión católica, por lo que las acciones en vida no determinaba el rumbo de las almas, ellos creían que el destino de los difuntos estaba determinado por el tipo de muerte que había tenido el individuo, siendo 4 los posibles lugares de descanso para las almas que habían muerto:

El Omeyocan

Huitzilopochtli dios del sol

Reinado por Huitzilopochtli dios Azteca del sol y de la guerra, en este lugar iban las almas de los guerreros muertos en batalla, los cautivos que eran sacrificados y las mujeres que morían dando a luz, ya que el parto era considerado una batalla. El omeyocan era un lugar de gozo permanente donde reinaba la música, los cantos y los bailes en conmemoración del sol (ja ja algo así como vivir en un musical). Se creía que tras 4 años, las almas que habitaban este sitio regresaban al mundo de los vivos en forma de aves con plumas multicolores.

El Tlalocan

Tlaloc dios del agua

En este regía Tlaloc dios de la lluvia y aquí iban todas las almas que habían muerto en circunstancias relacionadas con el agua por ejemplo los que habían muerto por alguna inundación, aquellos a los que los fulmino un rayo, o que habían muerto por alguna enfermedad como la gota la hidropesía la sarna etc., también se dirigían a este lugar los niños sacrificados al dios del agua. Este era un lugar de reposo y abundancia, y aunque por lo general los muertos eran quemados, los destinados a tlaloc eran sepultados en representación de una semilla que fuese a germinar.

El Mictlán

El catrin y la catrina bien podrían ser la representación actual de Mictlantecuhtli y Mictacacíhuatl respectivamente.

A  este lugar iban todos aquellos que morían de forma natural, Mictlantecuhtli y Mictacacíhuatl (el señor y la señora de la muerte) eran quienes reinaban este lugar, el camino que recorrían los muerto para llegar a Mictlán era muy difícil y para llegar ahí los decesos tenían que recorrer varios lugares durante 4 años, transcurrido este tiempo, las almas llegaban a  Chignahuamictlán donde las almas descansaban o bien desaparecían, para que el difunto pudiera recorrer este camino en paz, este era enterrado junto con un perro el cual lo dirigiría de forma segura através de un  río hasta llegar con Mictlantecuhtli, quien esperaba como ofrenda atados de teas y cañas de perfume, algodón (ixcátl), hilos colorados y mantas. Aquellos cuyo destino era Mictlán recibían como ofrenda 4 flechas y 4 teas atadas con un hilo de algodón (volvemos a ver como la referencia al numero 4 se hace presente). El Mictlán era un lugar de no regreso donde la oscuridad reinaba.

El Chichihuacuauhco

A este lugar se dirigían las almas de todos los niños que morían, aquí un árbol de cuyas ramas goteaba leche alimentaba a todos estos pequeños. Estaba escrito que todos los que habitaban este lugar volverían a la tierra cuando se destruyese la raza que la habitaba y de esta forma de la muerte volvería a renacer la vida.

Como en muchas otras culturas al enterrar a alguien se le acompañaba con muchas de sus pertenencias, además de cosas que pudiese utilizar en el transito al otro mundo.

Durante las fiestas dedicadas a los muertos se acostumbraba realizar procesiones que concluían con rondas en torno a un árbol llamado xócotl, el cual era cortado en el bosque, se le quitaba la corteza y se le ponían flores para adornarlo. Se acostumbraba realizar sacrificios de personas y se hacían grandes comidas. Después, ponían una figura de bledo en la punta del árbol y danzaban, vestidos con plumas preciosas y cascabeles. Al finalizar la fiesta, los jóvenes subían al árbol para quitar la figura, se derribaba el xócotl y terminaba la celebración. En esta fiesta, la gente acostumbraba colocar altares con ofrendas para recordar a sus muertos, lo que es el antecedente del actual altar de muertos.

Al llegar los españoles a México y tras realizar la conquista de todas estas civilizaciones y convertir a los nativos del nuevo mundo, se dio lugar a un sincretismo que mezcló las tradiciones europeas y cristianas del día de todos los santos con las tradiciones prehispánicas de las festividades de los muertos, dando como resultado el actual día de muertos.

A la llegada de los españoles a Tencohtitlan, los Aztecas cubrieron de cempasuchitl amarillo a los recien llegados, quienes lo consideraron una muestra de afecto, sin embargo como ya sabemos, el cempasuchitl amarillo esta asociado con la muerte y la guerra

En la actualidad, la forma de celebrar el día de muertos es algo diferente de como se celebraba con anterioridad y muchas de las características se han mezclado con las creencias cristianas, pero algunas aun guardan cierta semejanza  con las formas de celebrar de los indígenas, una de estas es el altar de muertos. Un  buen altar de muertos debe llevar las siguientes características:

• Un Arco:

Realizado con carrizo de cañas, ramas de limonada o palma, hojas y tronco de plátano , flores de cempasúchil o flor de muerto, flores de papel crepé, banderitas de papel picado y donde cuelgan frutas y figuras de azúcar y cuya representación o significado es que el Dios está con el difunto.

• Flor de Cempasúchil:

Es la flor de muertos de los aztecas, fue lo que el Dios Huitzilopochtli les concedió como una forma de señalar las tumbas de los difuntos, esta flor es amarilla o anaranjada como el sol. Zempoal – Xóchitl significa veinte flores o flores de una sola cuenta y simbolizan la dualidad entre la vida y la muerte.

• Sábana o mantel blanco

Representa la pureza. El mantel o frontal se adorna con pensamientos o epitafio.

• Veladoras y velas de cera pura encendidas:

Es junto con la flor de cempasúchil uno de los elementos principales, representa la religión católica y son colocadas para iluminar el camino de los muertos atraves de las tinieblas. Otro significado de las veladoras es que representen un lugar en la mesa para cada difunto, se coloca además una vela extra para él ánima sola, (espíritu) que vaga sola o sea los que no tienen familia. Las velas y veladoras de ser posible deben de ser de colores: las blancas para las vírgenes, las azules para los jóvenes, las verdes para los niños y las negras para los casados y adultos.

• Fotografía.

De la persona a quien se dedica el tributo.

• Objetos personales.

Todos aquellos objetos que definan la personalidad del difunto homenajeado.

• Un camino de pétalos de flor de cempasúchil y piedras blancas

Se coloca desde la puerta de la entrada hasta el altar como guía y aroma para que los muertos se acerquen al altar y reciban las ofrendas.

• Servilletas y manteles de papel china picado.

Se utiliza blanco para los niños y para los adultos negro, morado o de otro color de preferencia con la imagen de la muerte en situaciones diversas cantando, comiendo, vestida de gala, vestida de novia… pueden ser otras figuras: plátanos, flores,. El color que debe predominar es el morado porque significa luto.

• Adornos mexicanos diversos.

Con el propósito de representar la alegría: banderitas de colores de papel picado, en una naranja, cadenas de papel.

• Copal o incienso.

En sahumerio o cazuelas para purificar el ambiente y como guía para el alma de los difuntos. El copal indica que se recibe un alma ya juzgada y que goza de la gracia de Dios.

• Agua

Para la sed, ya que los difuntos llegan sedientos por su largo viaje.

• Sal.

Para evitar que lleguen ánimas negras o del mal. Para los sinsabores y altibajos de la vida.

• Cruz de cal con limón.

Representa los cuatro puntos cardinales.

• Vara de rosa.

Para liberar al muerto del demonio o para ahuyentar a los malos espíritus.

• Piñata de olla de barro.

Adornada con papel de china de colores.

• Un moño de color negro.

Como simbolo de luto.

• Calaveritas.

Pequeñas estrofas en rima que aluden a la forma de ser del muerto o que cuentan alguna anécdota de su vida.

• Canasta de carrizo, ayate o morral.

Para que el muerto tenga donde llevar la ofrenda.

• Calaveritas de azúcar.

Con el nombre de los amigos y parientes que participen en la puesta del altar.

• Ofrendas.

En general alimentos, cuyo significado alude a la vida (aqui observamos como esa dualidad aun esta presente). Entre los alimentos que no deben de faltar en un altar podemos mencionar: Frutas diversas (naranja, lima, mandarina, manzana, caña), verduras (chayóte, elote), dulces tradicionales ( calabaza, camote, calabaza en tacha, arroz con leche), platillos diversos (mole, asado, tamales, arroz, frijoles, tortillas, gorditas de maíz, atole, pan de muerto, champurrado, chocolate, café, aguas frescas, puros, cigarros, aguardiente).

En diversas partes de la república mexicana encontramos diversos altares y arreglos en conmemoración de dia de muertos

Otra actividad importante que toma lugar durante el día de muertos, es visitar las tumbas de nuestros familiares así como también el arreglo de las tumbas de estos, esto consiste en darle mantenimiento al recinto de nuestros queridos difuntos.

Otro punto importante es que la UNESCO ha reconocido a la festividad indígena de Día de Muertos como Obra Maestra del Patrimonio Oral e Intangible de la Humanidad.

En la actualidad el día de muertos es en parte una fiesta para recordar a los que se nos adelantaron, así como también una oportunidad de recordar una parte de nuestras tradiciones y  pasado (claro sin sacrificar a nadie), ya que como bien se ha dicho, una nación sin pasado es una nación sin futuro,  y México no es una excepción a esto.  Así que los invito a celebrar el día de muertos y ser parte de esta tradición tan llena de significado y orgullo para nuestro pueblo. Cuídense mucho y paz.

La Arena Coliseo de Guadalajara vivió una función especial con la visita de la leyenda Japonesa Jushin “Thunder” Liger el cual en esta ocasión se llevo la derrota ante el Último Guerrero, Shocker y Blue Panther

Liger salió acompañado del equipo NO LIMIT (Yujiro y Naito). Entraron primero los mexicanos después los japoneses saliendo al final Liger, a quién esperaba Último guerrero para darse con todo. Los japoneses empezaron dominando la lucha, Shocker recibió un fuerte golpe en la cabeza por parte de Naito el cual le provocó una herida. La lucha fue verdaderamente espectacular la gente se entrego a los mexicanos aunque había muchos seguidores de Liger.

La lucha semifinal fue para Mictlán, que rapa a Máscara Mágica, que al final acepto la derrota rapándose el mismo y entregarle el cabello a Mictlan. Mictlán sigue en ascenso, a finales de agosto obtuvo el campeonato semicompleto de occidente

Lo mejor de función la entrega de los luchadores en especial Liger y Último Guerrero, lo desafortunado fue la entrada muy poca gente.

Los resultados completos fueron:

• 1) Saturno y El Divino vencen a In Memoriam
• 2) Angel del mal y drago vencen a Hierro y Ángelo.
• 3) Sangre azteca, Dragón Rojo y Okumura vencen a Mascara Dorada, Flash y Fabián El Gitano.
  • 1ra. Doble estacas Mexicas, de Dragon Rojo y Sangre Azteca a Fabian el Gitano, okumura vence a Fabian el Gitano con espaldas planas.
  • 2da. Doble huracarrana mascara dorada sobre Dragón rojo, y Flash sobre Okumura.
  • 3ra. Desnucadora y espaldas planas de sangre azteca sobre Fabián el Gitano.
• 4)  Mictlán vence a Mascara Mágica y lo deja pelón.
  • 1ra. Descalificación a Mascara Mágica por exceso de rudeza.
  • 2da. Mascara mágica se lleva a Mictlán con paquete total.
  • 3ra. Mictlan se lleva con un paquete total a Mascara Magica que no acepta la derrota, al final se rapa el solo.
• 5) Ultimo Guerrero, Shocker y Blue Phanter vencen a Jushin “Thunder” Liger, Yujiro y Naito.
  • 1ra. Se van los tres japonés sobre último guerrero, patadas de Naito sobre Guerrero, y con espaldas planas se llevan la primera.
  • 2da. Blue Panther con palanca al brazo rinde a Yujiro, shocker con reinera rinde a Naito.
  • 3ra. Guerrero invita a Liger a la esquina, después aplica “Guerrero Special” y tras toque de espaldas los mexicanos se llevan la lucha.

En una muy buena función extraordinaria, que se llevara acabo el próximo miércoles 16 de septiembre (en lugar del martes tradicional) se presentara la leyenda japonesa Jushin “Thunder” Liger, que según datos sería la primera vez que se presenta en la arena de 50 años de tradición. Jushin “Thunder” Liger estará acompañado de sus compatriotas el equipo NO LIMIT Yujiro y Naito, que se enfrentan a los Mexicanos Ultimo Guerrero, Blue Panther y Shocker.

Para la lucha semifinal después de semanas de darse con todo, Mictlán y Mascara Mágica firmaron el contrato por el duelo de las cabelleras, la rivalidad empezó después de que Mascara Mágica intervino en una lucha de Mictlàn, para ayudar a Misterioso Jr, aunque al final la ayuda fue para Mictlàn que se quedo con el campeonato de peso medio de occidente, ala semana siguiente Mascara Mágica golpeo fuertemente a Mictlán que termino bañado en sangre, el pique siguió por varias semanas.

El cartel es el siguiente:

1. México vs Japón- Ultimo Guerrero, Shocker y Blue Panther Vs Liger, Yujiro y Naito.

Hace casi un año, Mictlán perdía la máscara ante Dragón Rojo Jr. en CMLL “Sin Piedad”, en el vídeo vemos la declaración de Mictlán luego de dicho evento

Un año más tarde, y pues después de 4 semanas con victorias consecutivas de Mictlan sobre Misterioso Jr., en los martes de Glamour en Guadalajara, el tapatío (y tras varios retos) se convierte en el Nuevo campeón semicomplento de Occidente en la Arena Coliseo de esta ciudad.

1. Inicia la lucha Misterioso Jr. entra primero al cuadrilátero, le sigue Mictlan, la lucha no empieza muy bien para Misterioso jr ya que la gente se empieza a meter con él y amaga varias veces con irse de la arena. Misterioso reacciona y con ayuda de Mascara Mágica se lleva la primera caída.
2. La segunda caída fue rapidísima ni dos minutos duro cuando Mictlan empata la lucha.
3. La tercera caída estuvo llena de vuelos, dos consecutivos de Mictlan, regresan al cuadrilátero y Misterioso aplica una “cavernaria” la cual se alcanza zafar Mictlan. Siguen las acciones y Mictlan realiza un vuelo más, tras varios castigos fallidos entre los gladiadores, Mascara Mágica intenta ingresar al encordado, se distrae Misterio Jr y Mictlan aprovecha para aplicar una “Huracarana” y así convertirse en el nuevo campeón semicompleto de Occidente.

Al final de la lucha Misterioso Jr. reta a Mictlan por su cabellera, la cual no se concreta.

El primer campeón de este cinturón fue el Misterioso Jr., el segundo fue el gallo, Misterioso lo recupera y ahora lo pierde contra Mictlan que es el 3o en la historia.

La lucha estelar fue también para los técnicos Blue Panther Sagrado y máximo que vencieron a Negro Casas, Felino y Dragón Rojo Jr. ( quién llego en lugar de Heavy Metal que no se presento)

La zona arqueológica de Mitla es uno de los lugares, junto con Monte Albán los más visitados por los turistas. Son, como dicen, lugares mágicos en los que para sentir la magia se tiene que estar ahí, las imágenes de las fotografías o los videos que uno capta no pueden comunicar lo que uno vive y percibe ahí, la atmósfera que se siente en estos lugares tiene algo que ver con la luz, con el aroma, con una emoción que se transmite desde el pasado. De verdad te hago una invitación a vivir y sentir en carne propia de esta hermosura arquitectónica, entrar a las tumbas donde eran enterrados los sacerdotes y los reyes zapotecas y gozar de la energía que puede sentirse alrededor. Durante los siglos que siguieron a la decadencia de Monte Albán, comenzaron a producirse en el Valle de Oaxaca diversos cambios culturales, sobre todo en la concepción arquitectónica y en la decoración de los edificios, así como la presencia de nuevas cerámicas, el desarrollo de la orfebrería y otros rasgos, que hicieron suponer que el valle había sido ocupado por un grupo ajeno que había impuesto su cultura. Pero los cambios que ocurren en Mitla residen en que del culto a los dioses se pasa al culto de los hombres, y las construcciones más importantes ya no son los templos sino los palacios construidos como exaltación del poder, un poder que además no confiaba solo en la ayuda divina, sino que construía fortalezas para refugio en caso de peligro. www.oaxaca-mio.com/atrac_turisticos/mitla.htm

I haven’t said a word about my favorite album of 2009 to date yet, but you’re about to hear about it from someone much more qualified than myself. Meet my cousin Eric, aka ‘ziek, master of the obvious at the hilarious new blog, Big Breakthroughs. Eric is one of my main sources for indie hip hop. He’s about as knowledgeable on the subject as anyone I’ve met, and has introduced me to some of my favorite albums in the genre, most notably Company Flow’s Funcrusher Plus, which I’ll hopefully write on at some point. He’s also, and I’m not just saying this because he’s my cousin, a pretty talented rapper himself, adopting a sort of deadpan spoken word delivery that recalls Sage Francis. Last year he recorded an album called Next Time, It’s Personal under the name The Nocturnals. Here’s a highlight:

Early this year, Eric turned me on to P.O.S.’s latest album Never Better, and I found it stunning. I asked if he would be interested in writing about the album in a guest post, and here’s what he came up with:

I always thought that “rap-rock” was definitionally bad. A lot of rock groups seems to have rap influence – Beck, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soul Coughing – and a lot of rap groups have rock influence – Rage Against the Machine, Saul Williams, El-P – but the music media never seems to refer to any of these groups as rap-rockers. Instead “rap-rock” is a term generally reserved for especially bad “rap-rock,” for the Kid Rocks, Limp Bizkits, and Linkin Parks of the world. Even Faith No More is too good to be called rap-rock.

P.O.S. is thus quite an anomaly. Especially after his luke-warmly received second album, Audition, critics, accurately, labeled P.O.S. as a rap-rocker. His recent release “Never Better” may be the first great, or, for that matter, the first even half-decent, rap-rock album.

P.O.S, who started as a punk rocker in Minneapolis, has released his last three albums as part of the tightly knit Twin Cities hip hop collective, Doomtree Records (His latest album was picked up by Indierap giant, Rhymesayers Records, who represents the likes of Atmosphere and Brother Ali). Doomtree is made up of a seemingly indefinite number of MC’s, including P.O.S., Cecil Otter, Dessa Darling, Sims, Mictlan, Mel Gibson & the Pants, and Yoni, to name a few. Doomtree has released a number of albums as a group: while last year’s self-titled album was somewhat disappointing, the False Hopes and False Hopes (Warped Tour) albums are indie rap standouts. Doomtree is no by no means flawless. Their MC’s are not the most talented, but they up there with the most original. From P.O.S.’s punk-rap to Cecil Otter’s melancholy folk-rap (“My name is Cecil Fucking Otter/Not Dylan goes electric”) to Dessa Darling’s spoken word, Doomtree has effectively reinvented the rap-hyphen.

On Never Better, P.O.S. shines as both a rapper and a punk-rocker. He stays away from the rap-rock cliches like screaming rap bravado over heavy metal guitar, mediocrely speaking rock songs over unnecessary scratching, tacking a rock chorus onto a rap verse, doing it all for the nookie, etc. Instead, P.O.S. pulls from his experience as a rapper and a punk-rocker to subtly merge the two genres, and he pull beats and rhymes structures out that don’t quite belong in either camp.

Notice the wordplay, punk rock hook, and purposefully awkward beat culminating in a beautiful round on “Never Better”:

What the songs have in common, and how they effectively merge genres, is by blending rap stylings with the raw passion of early punk rock.

I saw P.O.S. play in Champaign, IL not long ago. It was a small venue, with maybe about 25 people in the audience, most of them gathered in a circle around P.O.S., as he, Sims, and Mictlan played from the floor. It was just what you would expect from Doomtree: intimate, non-pretentious; and hard-at-work to keep their few fans coming back.
