I’m sure many people out there are frustrated with the default Virtual DJ 6 (VDJ6) mapper for the excellent Vestax VCI-100 but fear not, as there are two links below that would help you with your mapping needs.

1. DJ Moonie’s version (xml link here, right click and save as)

UK’s DJ Moonie posted his version of the .xml mapper on DJ Tech Tools which made looping and FX’s a breeze. See explanation here.

However, he did not figure out how to make the jogwheels work right. But this is still good for reference.

2. DJ pyc’s version (xml file from mediafire here)

I don’t know much about pyc, but he is a big fella from private tracker torrentech, who managed to figure out that the action verb for jog function is called song_pos.

In case you are using VDJ5, you can try out two mappers here and here. I’m not sure who are the authors. Word of warning: VDJ5 is a pain to map.

DJs are a specialised bunch of performers and they have specific needs from their MIDI Controllers.

DJs are a specialised bunch of performers and they have specific needs from their MIDI Controllers. The main requirements are – realiability, sturdy-ness and ease of use in a dark environment of a Dj booth.

Now of course, when it comes to MIDI Controllers, the software being used is also important. For DJs using controllers, the software is usually Traktor or Ableton Live. There are some who use Virtual DJ, MixVibes and MixMeister, but most DJs use the first two softwares. Those who use timecode, go for Serato. But with Itch, even serato has gone into MIDI Controller territory. More on that as we move along.

Here, we come to a divide. Live and Traktor are two completely different beasts and have completely different approaches to the idea of live performace. Live is more of a ‘make music on the fly’ type software where you can really play around with music. Traktor represents the traditional approach to DJ-ing – 2-4 decks and a mixer and fx sections.

So, let’s just talk about the traditional approach and I will handle Live in a separate post altogether.

For Traktor, Virtual DJ, Mixvibes, etc. we need a MIDI Controller that emulates at least two decks – complete with transport controls (play/pause, cue buttons), pitch faders, etc. And we can choose between using an external mixer or we can use the virtual mixer within the software. Now there are pros and cons of doing either. So let’s talk about them.

Going for an external Mixer is usually a good idea, but not if you are low on space in your booth. Sometimes, going for the software mixer is a good idea because you save space by mixing out of one single device (or two, if you are using an external sound card or audio interface). But when it comes to certain techniques, you are best off with a hardware mixer and that would obviously include scratching. Now I am not saying that you can’t scratch with just MIDI controllers (heck, I scratch on my BCD3000 sometimes) but for finer controls and complex techniques, you are better off with a hi-res controller and a hardware mixer with a good quaity audio interface.

Going mixer-less will also free up controls on your MIDI controller, which you can then assign to other things, like assign chanel EQ controls to the FX section or the up-faders to some other parameter (get creative with this one!).

Going mixerless is a good idea for mobile DJs and DJs who travel a lot. With a good controller and audio interface, a club Dj can easily play gigs with just 3 items (laptop, controller, sound card/audio interface). It is easier to carry, less items to check at airports and many more. It might be limiting at times, but you can always add small secondary/auxiliary controllers to your set up to give you more freedom. I will write a separate post on that one. So don’t worry, I am here to share right ideas with you. Just keep on coming back.

With the rapid rate at which digital DJ technology is improving it seems our current posts are consistently geared towards the latest tech which is further enabling the digital DJ to perform without the need to be in constant contact with a laptop. It appears to be a logical progression as fiddling with a laptop does seem to interfere with the performance and creative flow of a live set, Denon’s latest offering continues in the current trend to stop the need for DJs to controll essential features through the use of a mouse or laptop keyboard. The DN-HC1000S is designed to interface and aid DVS systems (turntables / CD players) with one of today’s most popular DJ software programs, Serato Scratch Live. The DN-HC1000S provides DJs with a comfortable plug and play hardware controller for all major features and commands of the Scratch Live software system.

The key features include:

Simple USB Plug & Play Connection (USB MIDI / Bus power)

High Quality Steel Cabinet with Rugged Rubber Keys

Serato Approved USB MIDI Controller

File Select Knob & buttons w/Back-Forward Action Keys

Track Select and Fast Search Buttons

5 Cue Point and 3 Sampler Player Buttons

Auto Loop Button w/ Loop Cut Knob & Roll

Loop IN/OUT Button w/ Exit/Reloop

File, Browse, History, Prepare Keys

Tap Button

MIDI Mappable for other DJ Software Systems

All in all this looks like a great contender in the market of USB MIDI controllers, you can check out the video demo from DJmag below:

So, it’s about 11:30 Friday night. Diogo and I have spent the last 3 hours prepping for our gig tomorrow…its the biggest gig we have had in the US to date. Eddie Halliwell, Alex Kenji, Hatiras and DJ Reza will all be there doing their thing along with FNF. I of course have given one last attempt to get all the unconfirmed party people to actually go to the event…did all my Facebook updates, myspace, soundcloud, twitter, podcast, (does it ever end!) and now blog. We got to practice a little more with Traktor and the Xone 1d midi controller tonight, which is pretty amazing. I can’t figure out if its for the anti-dj or for the ultimate dj. It’s so user friendly, but then again, I didn’t do all the midi mapping which I think gave Diogo a bit of a headache. That can maybe be another blog post for Diogo to write, he’s the tech guy, I’m just the student. But seriously, we are stoked for tomorrow’s show. Its the closest thing to any of the gigs we had in Rio and we really want to just rock it like we would in Brazil. If you are going to be around the LA area, the club is called Circus and its in Hollywood. We play from 1-2pm in the Winter Tech room…Eddie Halliwell will be playing from 1-3 in another room so we will just hope that you will be one of those awesome random people that don’t watch the huge headliner and instead go watch the other smaller headliner, Fox N Feel! See you tomorrow with brand new sets and flyers in hand!

Jointly designed by Ableton and Novation, Launchpad places Ableton Live at your fingertips. Whether you’re a DJ, performing musician or studio producer, Launchpad gives you all you need to truly ‘play’ Live.

With a multi-colour 64-button grid and dedicated scene launch buttons, Launchpad is purpose-built for triggering and manipulating clips in Live, it also offers a totally new way of controlling Ableton Live’s mixer. Launchpad’s buttons can be used to sketch out beats with drum racks, and they can be assigned to other functions in Live using Ableton’s ‘Learn’ mode.

The Launchpad is primarily designed with Ableton in mind, however it can be used in conjunction with a wide variety of other music software through the use of Novation’s ‘Automap’ control software.

There are a few different videos of this piece of kit floating around, but we found this beautiful demonstration from the clever people over at Little-Scale as a firm favourite. The video shows a simple ripple-based sequencer made for the Launchpad that makes brilliant use of the coloured pads and the platform itself.

Here’s a pair of diametrically opposed hacks. One makes use of a real instrument to play Rock

Here’s a pair of diametrically opposed hacks. One makes use of a real instrument to play Rock Band, the other makes use of a game controller to play real music.

[Tim] lets us know that his friend figured out how to play Rock Band 2 on expert level by playing flute instead of singing. Of course this works because the game is just looking for the correct frequency for scoring. It makes sense that the vocal lines can be offset by an octave and still register correctly. We wouldn’t have thought of this ourselves but now that we’ve seen her success, we will try it (our instrumental skills far out pace our singing talents).

Seeing this sparks a correlation with Phone Phreaking, which started with a blind kid singing a tone into the receiver to make the remainder of his long distance call free. This was followed by Blue Boxes that allowed people without perfect pitch to play the tones electronically. It would be interesting to see what could have been done with a talented flute player (like the beat-boxing flutist) and one of those old phone networks.

On the other side of the coin, we have [Jordan's] project in which she creates midi controllers using Wii drums from Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band. The Guitar Hero drums are velocity sensitive, a feature she’s using in her setup. The MIDI data takes into account how hard the drums are struck and the resulting sound reflects that. This particular writeup outlines her use of Osculator for the velocity sensitive system, but you can also check out the tutorial she wrote covering the use of JunXion with the Rock Band controller that we covered in the past.

Video for both of these control schemes is included after the page break. We love to see people break the guise of “I’m creating music by playing a video game” and actually use their musical talents in a new and interesting way.

GM, GS & XG: A Little History Many sound cards and synthesizers, as well as most audio software,

GM, GS & XG: A Little History

Many sound cards and synthesizers, as well as most audio software, are compatible with one of the three midi norms (GM, GS, XG). Though MIDI has long since proven its utility, the existence of different standards can be confusing, so this article has been put together in order to clarify a few points.

For someone who just wants to listen to music, or for a multimedia developer looking to add background music or sounds to their program, the Midifile format has proven to be a real asset. It allows a user to play a sequence that was written by another person, whatever gear or software they were using. But in the past, only the notes and rhythm of the musician were encoded, which didn’t necessarily guarantee a similar sound. In fact, the sounds coming from each sound card, each synthesizer, were different (different in their sound and in their organization). Patch number 15 could be a piano on synthesizer X, and a trumpet on synthesizer Y. It was sometimes necessary to be an expert in MIDI and/or have a lot of patience to get the right settings in order to listen to a piece written by another musician working on a different synth or platform.

The MMA (Midi Manufacturers Association) fixed this problem in 1991 by creating the GM (General Midi) standard. The goal of this standard has been to unify the behavior of sound generators when playing back a Midifile sequence. In order to be labeled GM, an instrument must be multi-timbral and polyphonic up to at least 24 voices, and include at least 16 families of sounds (pianos, guitars, strings…), each containing 8 variations (for example, for strings: violin cello, double bass, etc…

The main advantage of this standardization is that each patch number now corresponds to a certain instrument no matter what the machine. So, instrument number 71 will always be a bassoon and number 12 a vibraphone. The sound generator must also contain a drum kit, whose mapping (placement of the separate elements on a keyboard) is also standardized. Finally, MIDI controllers must be recognized also.

To read the full detailed article including the GM reference guide see: MIDI The GM Standard and its Extensions.

20 buttons and a USB cable – simple as that.

Buttons for rock stars to pound out sweet beats.

Everyone always asks me how I make my music, so this week each day I’m going to upload a photo of my favorite music instruments.

Today it’s my industrial-strength homemade midi controller.

How Colin and I made the world’s most basic midi controller

I’ve always liked to experiment, taking my instruments apart and making new ones. I came up with the idea for this midi controller a while back – I’ve always wanted to pound away on big big buttons. Big Big Buttons! Just like on a subway train – those big emergency buttons.

Got to talking with Colin about the idea, and we made it come to life. I gave him a few schematic concept sketches, and he put the wiring under the hood together. We made it specifically for use with Ableton. So instead of messing around with full-on midi programming, we actually did the circuitry by disassembling a normal keyboard and reassigning the keystrokes to the buttons. In a sense its not a full-on midi controller, but for all intensive purposes it works as one.

The casing body is now is now a 2.0 version. For our beta version we uses an attache case, with an acrylic plate that the buttons were attached to. After the wiring was all tested and completed, I wanted to give it a solid casing. So I went out and got the shiny black casing made down the street in Dongmen.

How it works – triggering beats, samples and effects

Use it basically for two things – triggering samples and beats, and controlling effects. Each button is a trigger for an event in Ableton, so playing live I can trigger effects and sounds. I like to set up the samples and effects I use in a show in advance, then I can drop in stuff on the fly without ever having to look at a computer screen. With a guitar, mic, or turntable hooked up thru the soundcard to Ableton, I can switch up between effects settings, using it as my effects pedal.

Today, we will all learn how to easily stream audio online… FREE. Okay, but before we even get to that point, we have to create some ORIGINAL audio and in order to do that, we will be using FL STUDIO 9.

What I would like y’all (yes, y’all, I’m from TEXAS!) to do is log on to the Windows partition in Boot Camp and open up the FL STUDIO 9 program. Here, I would like for you to create a simple drum track with a BPM between 90-100. Feel free to add an instrument or two using the Piano Roll feature (or grab a USB MIDI Keyboard and playout your sounds). Create 2-3 PATTERNS and then switch from PAT (PATTERN) to SONG. Go to View and select PLAYLIST and layout your patterns to have a few change ups. Repeat and add different patterns until you have atleast a One Minute track.

I will be selecting a few of your audio tracks to add to the Class Recordings section of this blog, so take your time and come up with a banger.

Once you are done with that, go to FILE and then EXPORT. Once you roll your mouse over EXPORT, a drop down menu will give you format options. Click on MP3 and save your file to a folder on the desktop with YOUR NAME. (you may need to create this folder)

Once you have the ORIGINAL MP3 created, go to www.divshare.com and create a free account. Use this website to upload your MP3 and use the DASHBOARD link to find your different sharing options (embed, direct link, etc.)

I will be here if you have any questions or need help. Now get to producing! ♥

Configuring the Numark Stealth Control for the complete novice (Part 2) – Midi Control Types T

Configuring the Numark Stealth Control for the complete novice (Part 2) – Midi Control Types

The purpose of this blog post is to give a quick overview of the various control types without going into too much details.

Midi Control Types

Below is a list of some of the midi control types one will encounter when setting up a midi controller with Traktor.

Direct

Controls of this type function as dials. There is a start point and an end point. Typically, this type of control could be used for things like volume/channel faders, pitch/tempo faders, effect parameter knobs and equalizer knobs to name a few.

Hold

This control type is pretty much self-explanatory. Press and hold to engage a function, releasing will disengage the function. Typically, this type of control could be used for switching to another midi page, resetting effect parameters, or even cue/pause.

Toggle

This control type is pretty much like a light switch. It stays on until its turned off. Press once to engage a function, press again to disengage. Typically, this control type could be used for turning on/off effects, play/pause or anything else like that.

Trigger

This control type causes something the same function to happen each time a button is pressed. For example, a control type of trigger could be used for a function such as dropping a cue point. Each time that button is pressed, a cue point will be dropped.

Output

This control type is used to control the LEDs on the midi controller. This is useful as a way of indicating the status of a midi assignable function. For example, having the effect on button illuminated will automatically let you know that the effect is on.

Things I forgot to mention last time

There are 2 reset buttons, the one in the settings section of the Midi Setup tab will reset all the assignments on any page that is selected. The other reset button is used to reset an individual assignment. There is a drop down box at the top right which allows you to switch pages, this is useful for adding extra functionality to buttons on the midi controller using “modifiers”. In this version of Traktor, buttons used to switch to different midi pages aren’t really called modifiers.

The controller attributes drop down box allows assigning of functions to 1 of the 4 decks or as a focus-based control.

I think that’s it for now, hopefully this information will be useful. Coming up, I’ll go through setting up this controller for Traktor Pro/Traktor Scratch Pro and then onto some of the ways I’m using the Stealth Control.

Configuring the Numark Stealth Control for the Complete Novice (Part 1) – Traktor 3.4 Earlier

Configuring the Numark Stealth Control for the Complete Novice (Part 1) – Traktor 3.4

Earlier I had done somewhat of a short review/overview of the midi controller. This will be a follow up to that previous post. This time I will be going through configuring the controller for use with Traktor 3.4. In a future post, I will go through the different controller types and configuring the controller for use with Traktor Pro. Following that, I will try to give a few ideas of how controls can be assigned with both Traktor 3.4 and Traktor Pro.

First Things First

After connecting the midi controller, you will need to:

Launch Traktor 3.4

Open Preferences

Under Hotkey & MIDI Setup, select Midi Interfaces and make sure an ‘X’ is beside the controller for Midi In and Out

This is shown below

Configuring the controller

Now that the controller has been successfully connected, it’s time to do some configuring. You’ll have a few options here, you can either download a file containing the midi mappings for the controller or you can do it yourself. This is entirely up to you. As a side-note, it might be helpful to download the midi mapping file from Numark’s website just to get an idea of how things are assigned.

Last week in the review, I had mentioned that the LED for each button has a different midi note from the actual button which makes it retardedly annoying to configure. So, to make less annoying, I’m including a table that maps button to corresponding LED.

*Set controller range to 32300 – 33200; No blend

Mapping function to midi controls is done from the Midi Setup tab. assigning a function is super easy.

To assign a function

Click the add button and select the function you want to add

Click the learn button and press button you want to use

Click the learn button once more to deactivate learn mode

It’s that simple. Now you can perform a function in the software by pressing the corresponding button on the controller.

Here’s what part of midi mappings look like

Hopefully, this has been of help. You may have noticed control types such as “toggle” and “direct”. In a future post I’ll talk about those in some amount of detail.

A few tips

Before I wrap this up, I wanted to leave a few tips

Always save your midi mappings as this will make life easier when having to migrate to another computer

Make a backup copy of all your settings and keep them on removable media or somewhere safe

An LCD display for your music, flash drive linking, and new looping options are just a few of the new features on Pioneer’s latest addition to the CDJ product line. The new Pioneer CDJ 2000 promises to be a powerful DJ tool for years to come.

Features

Multi Format Playback – The CDJ-2000 enables playback of MP3, AAC, WAV and AIFF audio files on CD,DVD-ROM, SD card and USB memory devices.

Pro DJ Link – New Pioneer Pro DJ Link that enables up to four CDJ-2000/900s to be connected and share a single music source.

6.1” Full Color LCD panel and Graphic User Interface – For displaying song titles, jacket art as well as detailed track information and wave form display of each song so DJs can find information needed to select a song at a glance.

To kick things off, I thought I would post a short review of my midi controller.

This post is intended to be a short introduction/review for the Numark Stealth Control Professional Computer-DJ Performance Deck

It should be noted that this unit is purely a Midi controller and therefore a multi-channel sound card/audio interface will be required.

What’s in the box?

Numark Stealth Control Midi Controller

USB Data cable

Beatport gift card

Traktor 3 LE software CD

Product Manual/Warranty Info

Pictures

Still in boxes

Outer boxes removed

Unboxed

Design

Overall, the design is pretty solid and the components are well laid out. The knobs and faders were fairly smooth. The unit is encased in metal but the weight is not that much.

Using the Stealth Control

So far everything seems to be going well for the Stealth until it was time to actually use it. Since I already had Traktor 3 installed I downloaded the .tks (it’s really an xml file with traktor-specific tags) file from the Numark Website and loaded it. Somehow, I did not really like the way the controls were mapped. As a result I had to go in search of a solution and I was able to get help from a member of the DjTechtools forum. In the end, I decided to just map all the functions myself which is fairly easy.

*More on using the Stealth Control in another article.

The Good

Solid construction

Portable

DJ software included

Beatport.com gift card

Pretty cheap (around $210 on Amazon.com)

USB 2.0 bus powered

The Bad

Midi mappings file from Numark’s Website is lacking

Buttons have different midi notes from their corresponding LEDs

The Other Stuff

Some may find the jog wheels to be a little too sensitive.

Conclusion

When all is said and done, this midi controller is a solid choice for a computer-based DJ.

8 pads, 8 knobs, perfect for on the go production.

This one will get a lot of use out of me as well. This mini 25-key midi controller is designed to fit
nicely into laptop cases and for easy transport. It already looks more solid than the Korg, hopefully it is.

emusician.com has a nice write up on both these pieces.
