Kita mungkin sudah mengenal sebuah font dari text. Ini digunakan untuk mengganti penampilan dari karakter yang kita ketik di program seperti Microsoft Word. Jadi kita dapat beranggapan dari sebuah soundfont adalah sama: ini digunakan untuk menukar suara dari sebuah MIDI instrument dengan sebuah “sampled instrument”. Jadi sebagai pengganti mendengar suara General MIDI dalam lagu MIDI favorit kita yang sudah baku, kita dapat mengganti nya dengan sebuah instrument yang kita telah “sampled”. Jadi sebuah soundfont definisinya suara dari pada bentuk.

Automatic pneumatic drum kit

Move over Steve and PEART… there’s yet another robotic drummer in town. [Fauzii] tipped us off to his own MIDI-controlled creation – WizardFingers. According to him, WizardFingers is already capable of 64th note rolls at over 250 beats per minute. That’s on every drum simultaneously. Each drum is hit with a lever attached to a linear pneumatic actuator. A laptop running MAX/MSP generates MIDI sequences, which are sent to Doepfer MTC64 board. All of these actuators are hooked up to the board, which sets them off in sequence.

[Fauzii] ultimately hopes to develop AI software that will allow WizardFingers to compose its own tunes on not only a drum kit, but bar chimes and an organ as well. His site documents the whole concept quite well (just watch out for wild cats).

Katapult update

Update: All the source, plus an absolutely-alpha-beta-alpha build will be put up on Google Code very soon, but please be patient, since I have a lot of work right now. I’m trying to squeeze in work on this wherever i can, so I can get it out there

So, here is a few more details on Katapult. I’ve been adding a lot of stuff today, and getting close to something that is release-worthy. The current features include:

Fully customizable layouts can be mapped to the entire grid of the Launchpad

Multipart layouts are supported and can be toggled using buttons on the Launchpad

The layouts are loaded into Katapult from a simple easy-to-write text-file (line example: yfader 0 7 8). This is kinda like mrmr-style layout files.

LED-colors of the controls can be set to any of the supported colors of the Launchpad

Katapult supports bi-directional control-messages. This means that changing a fader in for example Traktor, will also update the corresponding fader on the Launchpad surface. Me thinks this is cool.

Controls currently implemented are:

Hold button
Toggle button
Horizontal fader
Vertical fader
Horizontal slider-zone
Vertical slider-zone

Okay, might have forgotten something, but it does give a good overview of the current state of the thing. I’m going to implement support for 2D-pad controls, as well as an “indicator” control, that doesn’t send output, but can be used as an indicator light, before releasing it. I think that will make it out for a pretty suitable start. And after that? More advanced visualizers (beat-grid style, etc), timed functions, triggered after x beats, controller-chaining (altering one control can influence others), macros(!). A visual layout-editor would be nice but definitely won’t be first priority, since the layouts really are very easy to write by hand. Here’s a new video. It doesn’t show any of the bi-directional stuff, but it does make it clear how multi-page layouts are handled.

The more technical stuff: It’s all written in Processing. I’m writing and using it on OS X 10.6, but should work fine on other platforms as well. I found Processings MIDI support a bit annoying to work with (for output), so I took the easy route and offloaded the MIDI output handling to PureData through OSC. When I get the motivation, I’ll probably move the MIDI output back into the actual program, but I couldn’t find any MIDI-framework that did what I wanted to do, so PD is a fine solution right now. The patch is very simple and looks like this:

Yes, I say Katapult. What is it you say?

Well, I recently, after much struggle, got my hands on Novations Launchpad controller, hooray. It’s pretty cool, and very functional for controlling Ableton Live. Unfortunately my plan was never to use it with live, but instead with Traktor. In this regard, it is utterly lacking and uncool. Mostly because Novations Automap software is absolutely featureless in terms of what i wanted to do.

So when the software to make your dreams come true doesn’t exist, you just have to write it yourself. Hence I started writing Katapult. It’s intended to be a dynamic, totally customizable mapping solution for the Launchpad, that allows for much more functionality than the pretty mediocre hold-button scheme of Automap. So what does it do?

It allows you to create various controls on the surface of the Launchpad such as faders, buttons and “slider zones”. The MIDI output of these indivdual controls can then be mapped to different fuctions in Traktor, for example.

I have a lot of interesting ideas planned for this thing, but basics first. When I feel I’ve gotten all the basics down and tidied up the code a bit, I’ll release a preview and move on to some of the more interesting stuff

Okay, it’s late and I’m brainsmashed, so this might not be a very informative and detailed post. Intsead, I give you ZE VIDEO!

Multilinking Controllers in FL Studio

Multilinking controllers was a new feature in FL 7 or 8, I don’t really remember, but it’s pretty much just an easy way to link a bunch of knobs on a mid controller to things inside FL Studio. The multilink controllers button looks like a joystick. After pressing it, teaking controls in FL Studio and then pressing it again, you can easily link those controls to knobs or whatever on your midi controller. That’s sort of fun, but there’s an even better, way more awesome thing this can do; Override Generic Links.

Maybe that doesn’t sound very exciting, so I’ll explain what it does. Usually, when you link a knob on your midi controller to something in FL, the link is absolute. No matter what you do or select, that knob will control whatever in FL until you tell it not to. This can be useful for tweaking parameters like in filters or whatever, but it has its limits. Most notably, my midi keyboard only has 9 faders and 8 knobs, and my PadKontrol only has 2 knobs. Sytrus, on the other hand, has somewhere around 600 individual parameters that can be linked to something, and even that’s sort of skimping (the filter type isn’t linkable to a controller…). My 19 little controls just aren’t going to be that useful, and I’ll spend the vast majority of my time using the mouse.

A better solution would to have context-sensitive controls; when I’m using a synth, my knobs control the synth, when I’m using something else, they control something else. I tried to do this once, using the ‘Omni’ button in the Remote control settings window, but people who make plugins almost never conform to midi CC standards. CC stands for control change, and it’s what makes knobs n stuff on midi controllers work, each knob is set to a specific CC number, like 17 or 124, and whatever is receiving the midi uses them to control stuff. Back in ye olde midi days, hardware synths and sound modules conformed to a standard with these CC numbers, to some extent. CC # 1 was for the mod wheel, # whatever was for something else, etc. This made it easy to use a bunch of different things together, but these days the CC a synth uses for the filter cutoff could be used by another for the pitch of the oscillator. Not very useful.

Multilink!

With multilinking controllers, you can do the same thing, except FL Studio is smart about it and remembers what you want to control with what. After clicking the multilink controllers joystick button and tweaking some parameters, right-clicking the multilink controllers joystick button gives a menu of options. Selecting override generic links will bring up the generic links settings window, which is a lot like the remote control settings window. Now, tweaking controllers on a midi controller will tell FL Studio which knobs you want to control, and FL Studio will remember this, only using them to control those parameters when that plugin or whatever is selected. For example, if I wanted to control the pitch of the oscillators in 3xOsc with some knobs, I would;

Open up a 3xOsc.
Press the multilink controllers button.
Tweak the pitch parameters that I want to control, being mindful of the order that I do so.
Right-click the multilink controllers button and select override generic links.
Tweak the knobs on my midi controller in the same order that I tweaked the pitch knobs in the 3xOsc.

And then I’m done! Whenever I have a 3xOsc open and selected, those knobs on my midi controller will control the pitch parameters of just the 3xOsc that I have selected! After doing this with all the most-used parameters in the plugins I use most often, I can have less reliance on my mouse, and just tweak real knobs. Of course, it should be noted that my midi controllers knobs are absolute; if I select one 3xOsc and set the pitch way up with a knob, and select another one that has the pitch way down, when I tweak the knob on my midi controller, the pitch will ‘jump’ to where the controller knob is. Also, some synths like Sytrus have a crapload of parameters. My midi controller has 10 presets that I can edit and save. I used the same CC #’s for each controller on every preset, but changed the midi channel for each preset. This way, FL Studio thinks the knobs on each preset are completely different, and I can control a crapload more things with the same number of knobs, if I can remember which knob does what.

I didn’t write a blog post yesterday because I was too busy planning out the best way to control select parameters in Sytrus with at most 10 groups of 17 controllers. Also, there’s a bunch of complex looking controls in the generic links settings window and the remote control settings window, even a little graph. Someday I’ll write about how freaking useful these are.

Final Post on Grooves/Humanizing Drum Beats

This will be the last post on humanizing your drum tracks for a while. I have a few final tips to share:

1. Remember that a drummer has only two hands, so do not have more than three drums sounds playing al at once that are hit by the hands (such as crash, snare, tom).

2. Another way to lend variety in your tracks is by changing the parts of the kit you play in different sections. An example of this would be playing mostly closed hihats in the verse but mostly open hihats in the chorus.

3. Use of delay and reverb (but judiciously) on your drums (perhaps not the kick though) can make them sound more alive.

4. Programming some slight tempo changes in the drum tracks helps add a human element. No drummer can possibly play at a robotic tempo for an entire song. An example of this would be increasing by BPM by one or two ticks in the chorus.

5. Consider taking out the beat for a measure or two at transition points in a song. If it sounds weird, use a fill to go into silence or go back into the beat.

6. Most importantly, I keep repeating this because it IS that important. Always use a variety of rhythms and variations to those rhythms through a given song. Don’t loop the same two bars over and over!
