The Best of 2009 Blog Challenge: Best New Musical Find? I enjoyed many new albums this year, but mos

The Best of 2009 Blog Challenge:

Best New Musical Find?

I enjoyed many new albums this year, but most were new releases from old favorites. As it becomes more elusive, fresh cool music is something I try to take particular notice every year. I have to have some hope that it’s not all going down the shitter.

The two I’ve chosen (because it’s so hard to choose just one) are not necessarily new bands this year but were new finds that made this year in music worthwhile. It also made me wonder how much I overlook in music every year. There simply aren’t enough hours in a day…

…

Midnight Juggernauts is a trio from Melbourne, Australia that plays synth-y electropop. The best way I described them to a friend was Daft Punk meets Giorgio Moroder with Bowie-esque vocals for good measure. Very danceable prog music. I found out about them while browsing iTunes for another band. I saw the word ‘Juggernauts’ and had to click on it. I’ve been addicted ever since, which goes to show you how important a band name is, boys & girls. Dystopia, their first full length album, was released in 2007, and they are gearing up to record a new album in 2010.

…

Elbow is an alt-indie band from the U.K. that won the 2008 Mercury Prize for their fourth album. They’ve been around for a while (try 12 years), success is starting to pick up, and I’m just now hearing about them. I consider that a personal shame since most of my musical leanings are British. Fortunately for me a friend intervened and recommended them. Garvey’s husky tenor voice gives me absolute chills. The dark brooding tunes aren’t your typical dark brooding tunes so I hate even using those words. I can’t really compare them to any other band, and that is a freaking relief. That is why I’m falling more and more in love with their sound. How did I miss them?

Kitsuné is probably one of the sickest labels around. From music to clothing to design, they’ve got a number of things on lock. I’ve only been following the label since the 6th compilation, so I might not have the history as some of you, but in my opinion this 8th compilation is the bees mf knees.

The Kitsuné Maison Compilation 8 dropped digitally out in Europe yesterday (November 16) and is now available for everyone else here. The comp offers up a ton of good tunes from the likes of Siriusmo, Midnight Juggernauts, Heartsrevolution, Two Door Cinema Club (amazing new Kitsuné signee), Moulinex, Harvard Bass, Delphic, Memory Tapes, Crystal Fighters, etc etc etc.

As you can probably piece together, this thing is stacked and it would really be a shame to not pick up a copy of the album for yourself. I’ve been trying to figure out which tracks to denote as my “favorites”, but it’s proven difficult, as every song offers up something tasty. However, I can safely say that the new Heartsrevolution, Delphic, Two Door Cinema Club, Logo and My Tiger My Timing tracks are up there on my list.

Get a preview of the compilation here and buy a copy here.

Aussie electro types on Modular, whose ‘Shadows’ was a minor fave of mine last year, return with a slightly more muscular sound that doesn’t quite match previous heights.
While searching for songs that fall into my “Zombie Rock” genre, I came across Midnight Juggernauts. I’m not sure they quite fit that genre. Close but no cigar. The voice distortion and repetition are there but the dissonance is not quite there. The desire to eat brains is not quite there either. However I could see them totally rocking a dance floor. They do seem heavily influenced by Daft Punk too if I had to guess, and I do love Daft Punk. Go Australia for the rocking electropop scene!

Wednesday October 23rd belonged to Hype Machine/ Babelgum with their fantastic daytime showcase at Santos Party House with FREE Heineken and glow stick accessories. The line-up consisted of one of our favorite new bands Sleigh Bells, VEGA, Theophilus London and a closing set by Midnight Juggernauts and soundtracked by DJ Alan Wilkis. Spotted at the showcase: M.I.A., Spike Jonze and Paul Dano.

Sleigh Bells were first up on the bill, setting the bar for their predecessors. Sleigh Bells’ Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss are still finalizing their demos and polishing their set, but with their current minimalist iPod, bass and vocal stage dynamic are making some major noise throughout the blogosphere!

Sleigh Bells at Santos, 10.23.09

We saw Sleigh Bells in their true element a few days after their Santos gig at The Market Hotel in Bushwick, the duo really let loose in an awesome punk rock way. We interviewed the band for our exclusive CMJ wrap from Derek’s home/current studio last week, so be sure to check back soon for that insightful feature!

Theophilus London was another artist I’d never seen live or fully familiarized myself with before, but after seeing his animated live set complete with killer dance moves you can count me as one of his fans! We saw Theophilus L. onstage with Sam Sparro and Mark Ronson a few days later at the Fader CMJ party at the ACE Hotel as the super-group Chauffeur. It was the collective band’s debut performance and we’re anxious to see what’s next in store for their project!

The main draw for me at Fader Fort at the ACE Hotel in NYC was Florence + The Machine’s 7:15 set but along the way, open bar and wonderful sets by MNDR, Jenny Wilson, The Temper Trap, Chauffeur were an awesome bonus! Full pictures from each set can be seen HERE.

has been building steam over the past couple months through her blog, MySpace, and her frequent party gigs.

Bushwick’s MNDR was a breath of fresh air in the sweaty basement of the ACE Hotel, jumping from keyboards, knob-turning, and moving the crowd with her incredibly fun and tech-no-logic set.

Keep an eye out for MNDR!

were essentially CMJ’s headliner, playing some of the biggest showcases of the week and gracing the cover of the CMJ industry newsletter. We saw The Temper Trap Wednesday night at The Music Hall of Williamsburg for the Blue Flowers showcase in the headlining slot once populated by Speech Debelle.

I’m going to be honest in saying that I was not impressed by their set that night, and was quite frankly bored. However, the band I saw onstage at MHOW was not at all the same one smashing the stage at the ACE Hotel.

I think The Temper Trap are more comfortable in a smaller and more intimate setting where they connect with the fans, stepping up their stage presence 150% and feeding off of the energy of the crowd. The crowning moment for me was when lead singer Dougy Mandagi poured bottles of water on the drums to create a geyser effect while Jonathan Aherne swung his bass around like a chainsaw. Now that’s what I call a show!

was first on my radar as the guest vocalist on The Knife’s infectious You Take My Breath Away from the band’s 2005 album Deep Cuts.

Fellow Swedes Olof Dreijer and Karin Dreijer Andersson (aka The Knife) signed Jenny Wilson to Rabid Records where she released two records: Love and Youth (2005) and this year’s Hardships!

Like Chauffeur and Florence + The Machine, Wilson made her debut performance in New York at Fader Fort’s CMJ party. It was a beautiful debut performance and a great introduction to her electro-orchestra sound complete an ensemble of horns, flutes, keys and percussion.

I wasn’t quite sure what Chauffeur was upon seeing it listed on the bill, but I was pleasantly surprised to see these three artists from different places (musically and geographically) come together to make something fresh.

The trio played an extremely short set of about 3 songs, but wowed everyone with their cover of Sheila E.’s Glamorous Life. I’m interested to see what’s next!

also played Hype Machine/Babelgum’s CMJ showcase with Vega. The Australian trio played a 6-song set that floated between punk and electronic, sucessfully rousing the sweat-soaked and spritied crowd into a hardcore dancefest.

We chatted with the band earlier that week (check back for the on-camera interview with ‘Sup Magazine) and they were excited to play CMJ, an energy that was pleasantly projected through their live set.

No dia 31, além dos americanos do Hey Champ, a Funhell 1.5 recebe o duo Roots Rock Revolution, Rafael Urenha (Party Íntima), e as irmãs Marina e Helena Sasseron (Chicks in Charge).

HEY CHAMP

HEY CHAMP

saam hagshenas (vox, guitar, keys)
jon marks – (rhythm, vox, keys)
pete dougherty – (keys, synths)

Sounds like people have been enjoying the music, so here are two more tracks (rendered in four more remixes) for your enjoyment and downloading pleasure: from the land down under, the Midnight Juggernauts give us This New Technology, and from electrofunk duo Chromeo (best description ever: “a shameless return to the glistening, sex-saturated synth-pop which ruled the eighties”) we have the song Night By Night. These are both the title tracks of the groups’ latest singles, and have been spawning hot remixes all around the blogosphere. Have a listen and see what you think!

it has been an AWESOME week because I got a CMJ badge from my music class – a free pass to hel

it has been an AWESOME week because I got a CMJ badge from my music class – a free pass to hella concerts from tues-saturday.

tuesday night i had to CURATE a concert, which went pretty well.
but wednesday night was when it all began:

in my effort to see the Midnight Juggernauts play at the Bowery Ballroom, i walked in on the opening act, Fanfarlo, and fell in LOVE. so much so that i already bought their ticket for their december show when they return to NYC – (they’re originally from the UK, which makes them even better ha). i have this sort of assumption/fantasy that the singer is a tom hansen type of guy (from “500 Days of Summer”). i dont know why… probably cus i thought they looked similar. love his voice though.

they pull out all sorts of instruments during the show, haha it’s awesome. if you’re in the city on dec 18th, then PLEASE go with me to the show it’s gonna be sweet. i feel like i’ve been hyping them up quite a lot these days. i guess they provoke this sort of indie nostalgia feeling in me.. whatever that means.

then, Midnight Juggernauts came on… with a SUPER SHORT set. still awesome though. i saw them twice during cmj actually. first on wed night at bowery ballroom and then on saturday night at santos party house. i was sad they didn’t play my favorite track, “Nine Lives.”
anyway, here’s “Into the Galaxy”:

fun song to dance to.

thursday night i was venue-hopping alone (SO LONELY) but i actually only ended up going to one show cus the other place was 21+ GAHKSJHKAJSH. still pissed about that cus i REALLY wanted to see Youth Group… i feel like they play mostly 21+ shows, which sucks big time. however, I saw Warpaint at Le Poisson Rouge. i actually recently discovered them like a week before cmj and really liked their song “Elephants.” it’s very haunting/chilling and even more so live – the instrumentals are sort of eerie and the vocalist has this very commanding element to her voice.

i really liked the other vocalist/lead guitarist but she isn’t really present in this video. the bassist was really in the zone throughout the set, which i loved. this band was really the only one i saw during cmj that didn’t play danceable music but they seemed really committed to their music/performance, which kept me intrigued. i like them a lot, so check them out. and i like that they’re an all-girl band but not necessarily like YEAHHH WOMEN IN ROCK. RIOTTTGIRL. \m/ nameannn? they said a lot without saying too much.

friday night i partied it up at THE STUDIO @ Webster Hall.
first i saw an awesome Parisian band, We Are Enfant Terrible, who are so much fun.

Red Wire Black Wire was up next… A LOT of fans lol. they even came back for encore – rare for such small bands. they were also REALLYGOOD.

lastly, Yes Giantess ended the night. they were pretty good but probably my least favorite from CMJ. the instrumentals were SOOO sick but i wasn’t really feelin the vocals. STILL GOOD though, so mad props.

SATURDAY was the last night of cmj..sad. but it was the best night. what a grand finale. as i said before, I saw the Midnight Juggernauts again. and I saw Parallels, who played at 3 am.

couldnt hear her voice fo shit but i just took it as an instrumental band and DANCEDANCEDANCED. so fun to dance to. the most EPIC set, though, was between MidnightJuggernauts and Parallels: MAN LIKE ME. wtffff i didn’t hear of these guys before but HILARIOUSSSSS/ great performers.

Our heads are currently spinning trying to just digest CMJ so far and what is yet to come (still 3 full more days including today!) The bands, crowds and parties have been fantastic so far! If you are in New York this week we urge you to go out and see some kick ass bands play all around the city.

Anyway, long days of doing the aforementioned leave us astray from the computer so blogging will be at a minimum until CMJ wraps this weekend but we’ll be checking in!

So far we’ve seen Apache Beat play Club NME, Sleigh Bells, Theophilus London, Midnight Juggernauts and Vega play Hype Machine’s showcase, Pete and the Pirates, The Love Language, Let’s Wrestle, and Surf City at The Bell House, and a slew of our favorite celebrities as well.

And there’s so much more in store! Check back for pics and updates here or follow our live Tweets @tlcblog!

the new track by the juggers still isnt sitting too well with me, it seams a lot slower than their previous work and doesnt seem to have that pop that they had. the juan maclean bring midnight juggernauts back to their electro-rock roots with this remix of ‘this new technology’.

the juan maclean delivers a more straight forward club mix but top shelf as one can expect from juan maclean.
