Midori writes about her experiences with herpes, and makes a powerful argument for the benefits of her illness.

Excerpt: “I have genital and oral herpes—and I swear it saved my life. It sounds weird, I know, but it’s true. I contracted herpes as an undergrad at Berkeley in the mid 80s. My boyfriend had a cold sore on his lips after the first sunny day of skiing. Since childhood he would get the same little blister after the first day on the slopes, so he didn’t think much of it. Both of us ignorant of the potential transmissions to genital areas, he went gloriously down on me.”

One of the programs in the excellent Xfce goodies collection, is Midori, a sleek, Xfce-style web bro

One of the programs in the excellent Xfce goodies collection, is Midori, a sleek, Xfce-style web browser. While it is tiny compared to Firefox, it is actually packed with nice features. It has tabs, extensions, a super cool location bar, a search bar, and more. Midori has most of the things that makes Firefox great.

I missed the bookmarks I’ve collected with Firefox over the years, though. However, importing them is a pain, because Firefox can only export to Netscape’s bookmark.html, and Midori only uses the XBEL format. And, instead of searching the web for solutions, I decided to, you’ve guessed it, make my own bookmarks.html-to-XBEL converter.

And I did write one, and ported all my bookmarks to Midori. I even managed to copy the folder structure. But I felt I wasn’t done. So I wrote some wrappers. One to modify Midori’s bookmarks.xbel file in place, to be able to retain any old Midori bookmarks. And a shell script to automatically pick the right files.

You can download a tarball with all three the scripts, once you’ve unpacked it, you can just double click ff2midori.sh or run ./ff2midori.sh. Be sure to have Midori installed and exported your bookmarks to a file. The script will first pop up a dialog asking whether to retain old Midori bookmarks, and then a file dialog, to browse for the bookmarks.html file.

Be warned, however. The shell script is not thoroughly tested. If you don’t want to take chances, and feel comfortable with the command line, you can use the Python scripts instead. They should work fine. But make a backup of the files involved just in case.

8/10 — Worth watching. Filled with humor and cutesy shojo romance. (But still shonen.) A

8/10 — Worth watching. Filled with humor and cutesy shojo romance. (But still shonen.)

An absolutely hilarious and charming anime. While it is shojo, the series includes plenty of nudity, occasional vulgar humor, and fight scenes for the male audience, as well. Studio Pierot does a good job of poking fun at the magical girl style anime that they helped popularize, while still creating a sincere series. The recognized demographic for the series is shonen; although, I would hesitate to call the series that: it rides the border of shojo and shonen.

Let’s make a quick run thru the basics:

Voice Acting: 9/10 — Consistent and believable.
(This concerns the Japanese vocal cast.)
The voice actors pull off a wide variety of conflicting emotions throughout the series, and never does that voice acting get in the way. Even the voices of the lesser characters, such as those various gangmembers always lookin’ to take Sawamura down, fit into the goings-on without interrupting the flow. Shojo often requires female voice actors to go from complete calm to flipping out at a moment’s notice, and this does happen, and the voice actors pull it off quite well. The voices add to the characters effectively too. Both Sawamura and Midori are given greater personality by their actors’ performances.

Animation: 8/10 — Good quality and smooth.
So the animation won’t knock your socks off, but it is quite good and the frame rates are consistent. Nowhere does it feel like animation was left to the last minute or that maintaining the benchmark of quality was knocked off the priority ladder. Not only does the animation achieve the day-to-day events that it is meant to portray, but it also displays the entirety of fights without panning away between punches. We see the movements! That’s a big deal to me, especially in a series where fighting may be pertinent to the story of a character, but it isn’t pertinent to the overall story. This was not an action anime, but when fights came up, it may as well have been.

Music/Sound Effects: 7/10 — Somewhat generic, but enjoyable.
The opening is “Sentimental” and the closer is “Mou Sukoshi… Mou Sukoshi…” (or “A Little More… A Little More…). Despite the lack of openers and closers (the show is only 13 episodes), we also get two songs that crop up during episodes in order to enhance the emotional atmosphere: “Small Letter” in episode 7, and “A Single Drop” in episode 8. I think the 4 songs cover the space of music necessary for the series. While the songs are somewhat generic, they do fit directly into the events of the series and coincide with the characters’ feelings. The actual sound effects in the series are there, and like the voice acting they fit right in and don’t get in the way.

Story/Script: 7/10 — Original, though rushed finale and some cliche elements.
The story is fairly original in that a girl becomes a guy’s right hand. From there on in the story does maintain a level of originality with the crazy sister, Ayase’s dreams of hooking Seiji, etc. We do get the typical bad boy turns good, etc. that we might expect in a shojo anime; however, the way in which these things are carried out are much more splendidly written, with an eye towards humor, than almost any other similar series. The ending is incredibly rushed, as the series wraps up in an episode rather than across an ending arc. The last couple episodes do seem to build, but it’s a bit of a stretch. The level of closure at the end is also somewhat unsatisfying as other characters’ fates, besides the central two, are left mostly unexplained, and it is only the beginning of the main characters’ real relationship, so to speak.

Bad reviews I’ve read of this series often compare it to the manga, and while manga are often better (and I have read and enjoyed several volumes of this show’s manga), I try not to cross-compare. I do believe this series stands well enough on its own.
The Technicals:
Directed by Tsuneo Kobayashii, and produced by Studio Pierot. It originally aired on Animax from April 3, 2004 to June 26, 2004. And it is based on the manga by Kazurou Inoue that was published in Shonen Sunday from September 25, 2002 to October 18, 2004.

Midori no Hibi
Episode 13: “The Days of Two People”
Wherein the anime draws to a rather rapid close.

So, at the outset, Midori is back home, and Sawamura is back to being Sawamura. Sawamura, as you may recall, has just been confessed to by Ayase. He tells Ayase he’s sorry, and without really meaning to explains that it’s complicated. She puts it together and tells Seiji that the girl left him because what he felt was love, but because he couldn’t see it, the girl didn’t feel like she could stay. This is probably one of the more poignant things said in the series. It’s sentimental and honest. Ayase thanks Sawamura for being direct because now she can give up. As it turns out Midori has no memory of ever being Seiji’s right hand. Kota doesn’t know what to do because he thinks if he tells Midori the truth she’ll go back to being Sawamura’s right hand. Meanwhile, Seiji finds Midori’s diary, and runs into Kota near Midori’s house, asking him to return it to her. Kota explains the situation and Seiji decides it’s best not to give it back to her. Midori realizes Seiji is outside, and Kota tells her to chase after him — of course, Kota inadvertently reveals himself as well, Midori becoming aware of his feelings for her. Regardless, she chases after Seiji for the duration of the day. Throughout the day Midori tells herself how this time she’ll be strong, and Seiji continually encounters things that make him weepy about it all. Seiji gets a visit from his sister, which only serves to make things worse.

In the end, Midori and Sawamura meet up by the water fountain, and with some difficulty, she confesses to him. He says he knows how she feels and he feels the same way. The series pretty much ends there, at the beginning of their relationship.

It’s a good episode, but it does feel as though they crammed way too much into too small a space. The pacing was really good right up until the end, and then it just sorta fell apart. The episode also doesn’t bring closure to a lot of things and creates additional problems — Seiji’s sister is now pissed at him for Midori being gone, the relationship is just starting and we assume we’ll know how it’ll go though we don’t get to really see any of the future togetherness after they’ve asserted their feelings, etc. It doesn’t feel like that much closure, but maybe I just don’t understand shojo anime.

Midori no Hibi
Episode 11: “Fated Reunion”
Within which Sawamura studies (?!), Ayase tries again to hook-up with him, and he has to go to the rescue of Midori’s childhood friend Kota.

The odd thing about the photo above is that Sawamura is so happy because he saw a girl with a big rack working as his waitress; however, he has seen innumerable boobs throughout the show. Anyway, we start this episode off much where the last one left off, with images of Midori’s shyness. Ayase makes a movie to hook up with Seiji and has what is so far the best case of imaginary events thus far. Normally I wouldn’t go into too much detail, but here’s a rough translation of the dialogue that runs through Ayase’s head:

“Sawamura-kun?”
“What is it Ayase?”
“If it’s okay, please use this. I have tried to put together a complete set of notes of everything on the exam.”
“What is this? You did this for me? Thank you, Ayase. I can always rely on you. At university and when I get a job, you’ll always be there for me. Let’s be together forever.”
“Always together?”
“Yes, marry me.”
“Yes! I already put my seal on the marriage certificate!”
“Takako!”
“Seiji!”

So that may’ve been a bit much, but how could I resist? Of course, he accepts the gift and thinks nothing of it, other than Ayase must have way too much freetime. Kota then goes looking for Sawamura again to help Midori, but he runs into some punks spoiling for a fight with Sawamura. Kota gets kidnapped, and Sawamura goes to save him, where Midori even helps Sawamura fight a little. Kota, just before passing out from a blow to the head and the shock, realizes that Midori is attached to Sawamura’s arm. Onward and upward! I originally prized this show for its diversity. We have some bathroom humor, coupled with romantic comedy, decent fight scenes, cultural humor, etc. This episode returns to that a little, including a good variety of different interests and kinds of comedic relief.

Yesterday was Dani’s 18th birthday! I remember last year I think I told people to go to her bl

Yesterday was Dani’s 18th birthday! I remember last year I think I told people to go to her blog to wish her a happy birthday. DO IT AGAIN! Even though you’re a day late.

So last night Andrew and Za- had planned a surprise celebration of sorts for Dani. They’d gone to the Wonderland Ice Skating rink.

Carmaine and I took the train to the city together, because we weren’t going to go ice-skating. Got to the Wonderland place (which is on HarbourTown) at past seven, and watched April, Si, Za-, Andrew, Dani and Kud ice skate for a while. It was getting cold already! I wasn’t wearing enough (that is, I was wearing a shirt and shorts. It was pretty windy, alright?)

They finished ice skating at around half past seven, because D.P. was texting saying she was freezing her ass off outside the Medici the restaurant we were going to eat at. We walked down to the restaurant (Si said it was in one direction and everyone else walked in another. I said we should follow Si because “Simon says”), and felt really awesome walking in when everyone else waited for a table, because Za- and Andrew had already made a reservation.

Za- made a fail move when she sat down on the small individual tables instead of the large table for 11 people…I laughed.

Sat down, and ordered a few drinks and the food. At some point Dysh- and her boyfriend came along, and then Talinoob also came along. (Mel had left by this point, I forgot to mention.) Dani and I, for old times’ sake, did another sugar-shot. To Englang, we toasted, and downed that packet of coffee sugar.

So we started doing the whole joking around thing that Andrew loves so much. Last year for Dani’s birthday the theme and butt of all jokes were how small Carmaine’s eyes were. This year it was how mentally retarded I look/act, how Dani’s pretty much a crazed arsonist, and how Carmaine is probably on steroids, to explain why she’s so freaking tall when the rest of the “family” isn’t.

The “family”, by the way, is a Facebook joke where Andrew and Dani are the parents of Eunice, Bianca, Carmaine and myself. Eunice and Bianca had since took themselves off the family list (or never joined it) so just Carmaine and myself. D.P. is our Auntie. I am the effing son/brother. Since I’m the only one who bears some resemblance to Andrew (another long running joke) we figured that Carmaine had to be adopted. Still, Andrew realized the reason Carmaine doesn’t seem to fit into the family is because she’s on steroids. When Andrew first said, “Holy crap my family is fucked up. I got an arsonist for a wife, a mentally retarded son and a daughter who’s on steroids.” Carmaine laughed, and then asked, “Wait, who’s the one on steroids?”

Guess the steroids got to her brain?

I ordered a Midori drink thing, which Za- said she’d shout me. D.P. ended up taking it, so I ordered myself a Japanese Slipper which is Midori, cointreau and lemon juice. When that came, Carmaine took a sip and made a face because it was quite strong. I liked it. I made April promise to make me one some day because she knows how. She ordered a Sex On The Beach (I told her to text Vania about it).

Then Za-drank about half of it, all the time saying, “Oh man I get sick at the sight of liquer!” Weird girl.

So because Za- took my drink, she decided to shout me a Baileys (which Julia knows is my favorite).

We had heaps of sexual connotative jokes – look if we freaking ordered a Sex On The Beach and D.P. started getting a bit tipsy you know sexual jokes are gonna show up. In this case…actually I think, in the interest of not publicly shaming Carmaine, I won’t repeat what that 2 handed joke was.

Then Andrew started trying to finish all the food people didn’t finish, like the ravioli, risotto and the pasta Carmaine didn’t want (she ended up eating some of my gnocchi). He got really full and started acting really stoned, and then he had some of Dani’s Sex On The Beach (everyone had some Sex On The Beach with Dani, apparently. It was a good birthday for her) and went really red in the face.

We then started playing Chinese whispers. D.P. thought it would be oh-so-funny to start something along the lines of “Peter Pepper Poked A…” etc which I, as the 3rd last person, got as “Peter Poked Her Peter Poked Her”.

Left at around nine thirty, and took Talinoob and D.P. through Docklands to get them back to Flinders (I was worried because they were walking in slight zigzags and hooting like hyenas) but in the end we (Carmaine and myself) ditched them at a tram stop and walked to Southern Cross. Southern Cross didn’t run Glen Waverley so we took a train back to Flinders and then took a Glen Waverley. Gave Carmaine a ride home, and then contemplated blogging this before bed on the iTouch. Thought hell no, and fell asleep until about 8:30 or so this morning when I got woken up by my parents yelling at each other.

So, happy birthday Dani my darling dearest doodoo! Haha I said doodoo.

I love you!

“For relaxing times, make it Suntory time.”–Bill Murray’s character, “Bob Harris,” advertising Suntory in Lost in Translation

[Sip & Tell features barstool interviews with spirits industry professionals.]

You probably recognize the above quote from the 2003 film Lost in Translation starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. Around that time, Suntory was still best known for its melon liqueur, Midori, but over the past few years, its single malt whisky, Yamazaki, has infiltrated U.S. shores and quietly stolen the hearts of many a scotch drinker. Yamazaki 12 year and 18 year, both prize-winning in blind tastings, are made at Japan’s oldest distillery, founded by Scotland-educated Shinjiro Torii in 1923. Created with the level of craftsmanship the Japanese are known for, the whisky is aged in Japanese, American, and Spanish oak casks, lending a full-bodied flavor and silky smooth finish.

Over the past year, many of NYC’s best-known cocktail bars have featured drinks made with Yamazaki, such as the “Gold Rush” at Goldbar and the “Murray Sour” at Minetta Tavern. This is mainly due to the work of Gardner Dunn, North American Brand Ambassador for Suntory Whisky.

Gardner, a mixologist who is as recognized for his creative cocktails as his off-kilter hairstyle, travels around the country for several days (if not weeks) every month. He says he’s seeing a younger crowd show interest in the brand. “Scotch used to be a status symbol, something your dad drank,” he said. “Now I’m seeing younger people wanting to try new stuff. They’re interested in hearing about the distillation and the history.”

Gardner recently got an advanced course on all things Yamazaki when he traveled to the Suntory distillery on the outskirts of Kyoto, a location chosen for its water source. The Vale of Yamazaki, hailed by famous master of the tea ceremony, Senno Rikyu, is legendary for its pure water. Inspired by the art of Japanese bartening, which includes techniques such as ice ball carving and the hard shake, Gardner set out to gather Japanese bartending tools to show to the many skilled bartenders he’s met stateside. He’s put together a “Godzilla Kit,” with tools including crystal mixing glasses with a lip, bar spoons with forks on the opposite end, and Japanese jiggers, which have a thinner and deeper design and more balanced weight than standard jiggers.

The Godzilla Kits are just one bonus in what is turning out to be an exciting year for Suntory. Later this month, the hotly-anticipated Hibiki 12-year blended whisky (aged in plum liqueur casks and filtered through bamboo charcoal) hits shelves in NYC and California, its first debut stateside. Also, just in time for the holidays, a limited edition of 300 bottles of 1984 Yamazaki will be released, for $550-$650 a pop.

Gardner says he finds himself crafting cocktails less and less and carving ice balls more and more as he focuses on educating people everywhere about the history and philosophy behind Suntory. “Cocktails are not the goal [for Yamazaki], but it does mix very well,” he said. “It doesn’t have a lot of heat, but it has honey overtones that pair well with other spirits.”

Kanpai!

I’ve been way into French music these days. I listen to it almost non-stop (save a little Dvorak, and recently some Riegger, just for kicks). This piece is BY FAR my current favorite.

It kills me that this was the last thing Debussy ever wrote. I’m not particularly a fan of his earlier stuff (Claire de fricking Lune, anybody?), but this is so heart-wrenchingly painful, it kills me every time I listen to it. And these days, I can’t seem to get enough. I literally listen to this piece every night when I get home from work. I just love it. Especially when he transitions into major (at 1:32 in the video) for just a little while. So so so so beautiful.

How much do you love Debussy now?? Right? Just listen. I mean, REALLY listen to it. He is so unabashedly unapologetic about his dissonance, not even bothering to resolve it or hide it most of the time. And he is still so in-your-face French, even at the end of his life (this was due to his hatred for Wagner, and really, who could blame the guy? everyone hated Wagner except Wagner…), except he still manages to incorporate all these other styles in his writing…mostly Asian and Spanish, from his traveling. And still, with all that going on, with the whole tones and the dissonance and the cornucopia of style, you can still hear the pain and the triumph of his life in this piece. The guy was dying of rectal cancer. I mean, COME ON.

Long story short, I LOVE THIS PIECE. I love the almost counterpoint going on between the piano and violin. I love the bitonality and the way he employed the ENTIRE spectrum of the violin. I love the sadness and the beauty and the fact that this was the last thing he left us before he died.

Also, in case anyone was curious, this is not the greatest performance of the piece. I vote Joshua Bell or Midori, but this was all I could find on youtube.

Windows 8

Windows XP Prof 64bit.

5/5 — Damn funny, and just enough sincerity. Midori no Hibi Episode 7: “First Date

5/5 — Damn funny, and just enough sincerity.

Midori no Hibi
Episode 7: “First Date”
In which Ayase plans her attack on Seiji’s heart and executes!

Ayase plans the perfect date, and they go through the whole spiel: movie where she tries to hold his hand and be scared into his arms, trying to get him to ogle her in swimsuits, trying to get him to like her cooking, to seduce her while her parents are away — she saved her allowance and sent her parents on a vacation, I almost want her to get Seiji for going to such great lengths — and offering him an opportunity to walk in on her in the bath… yeah, of course it backfires because Seiji is oblivious. Midori realizes what’s going on, and seems to think that Ayase isn’t beating around the bush at all. Much to Midori’s relief Ayase’s plans fall through, but we do get to spend a good deal of time in Ayase’s alternate realities, where she succeeds and hooks up with Sawamura in a number of ways. So yeah, this is the funniest damn episode so far by far. And at the end Midori and Sawamura have a moment, and it’s cute. So there’s your awesome humor that makes Midori no Hibi such a treat, which is a nice surprise given many shojo anime are so painfully made for 12 year old girls (and boys, but we won’t get into the issues with Japanese youth), and you have the cutesy couple moment to top it off. It’s like a well-proportioned romantic comedy. Bravo! Also, you get to see Ayase — as does Sawamura — nude: huzzah!
