I know it’s thanksgiving and I’m sitting on a poo-poo platter of remixes that I wanted to share. So here we go! And be thankful g-dammit!

Un tempo la puntata degli inediti era quella più bella di X Factor. Era quella in cui, finalmente, gli artisti potevano esprimersi dando il meglio di sè. Quest’anno, invece, la manche degli inediti è stata la peggiore. Di sempre. Per farla breve, non c’è stato un brano degno degli inediti presentati gli anni passati (e non certo perchè nelle precedenti edizioni ci fossero capolavori, anzi): dei quattro c’è veramente poco di salvabile. Prima di passare alle analisi dettagliate (xD), un unico appunto: Silver fuori. Ma, vista l’ora, non fregava praticamente a nessuno: si è pure dimenticato il testo, ma nessuno aveva neanche la forza di segnalarlo.

Dicevamo: comincia la manche Giuliano, con Ruvido. Ecco, avessi saputo cosa sarebbe venuto dopo questo brano, probabilmente non l’avrei accolto tanto freddamente. In realtà Giuliano ha un ottimo potenziale, una voce interessante e potrebbe fare cose davvero ottime: il problema di questo brano è che lui entrato cantando Amy McDonald ed Amy Winehouse e rischia di tornarsene a casa con una canzoncina radiofonica (ma non troppo), carina (ma non troppo) e vendibile (ma non troppo). E che ha un retrogusto vecchio di almeno una decina d’anni.

Segue Silver con Fuori c’è il sole. Ecco, se posso andare controcorrente, non è poi così malaccio: intendiamoci, è veramente banale e senza il benchè minimo pregio, però almeno non si prende troppo sul serio. Silver – nonostante gli sforzi di Morgan – non è mai apparso come un cantautore, come uno particolarmente profondo: insomma, la canzoncina col fischietto ci sta pure. Certo, un testo un pochino meno superficiale e qualche nota meno banale sarebbe stato il minimo, però il motivetto è di presa immediata. Nonostante sia stata bistrattata da tutto il mondo, discograficamente potrebbe pure funzionare. Forse.

Poi è stato il turno delle Yavanna e di Una donna migliore. Mah. Volevano fare le alternative e se ne sono uscite con un mezzo plagio di Pappalardo. Sarà nel loro stile, d’accordo, però hanno fatto molto meglio in questi due mesi di X Factor. Un pezzo del genere non valorizza né il loro valore commerciale, né quello artistico. Una roba un po’ a metà, insomma.

E pure la grande attesa per Marco è stata parzialmente delusa. Dove si vola è carina e un pochino meglio degli altri inediti, ma si mormora che per lui avesse scritto un inedito Mika. Che i discografici hanno scartato, ritenendo questo più adatto. Devo aggiungere altro? Ah, sì, il 4 Dicembre uscirà il suo EP, con un altro inedito.

Last night I experienced my first Salvadorian/Guatemalan/Mexican Thanksgiving feast. There was salmon, turkey, ham, rice, potatoes, arroz con leche, pazole, and soooo much more. I ran into Walter, the new Neighborhood Advisor for the Baker neighborhood, at the Mika volunteer party on Friday, and he invited me to come. I was hesitant to attend because when I left in June I told everyone I was moving overseas (which I am, just not as soon as I had originally thought) so I thought it might be weird if I showed up. Either way, I agreed to attend, and the moment I showed up people literally jumped out of their seats to run and hug me. Before we ate, we all sat around (30-40 of us) and talked about what we were thankful for. The neighbors stood up and thanked me, the “mujer bonita” who spent hours walking up and down the street trying in my (very) broken Spanish to get to know everyone. I was overwhelmed by everything as I thought back to this time last year when I only knew a handful of people who had lived there for many years but didn’t know anyone else in the community. I listened to stories of the parties they have and the weekly meetings they hold and the police officers that come to those meetings to build relationships. Some of the Baker folks are even attending bi-weekly planning meetings at the Mika office with neighbors from the three other Mika neighborhoods.

Mike, a leader in the Halecrest Neighborhood Association across the street from Baker, was also there last night. This morning I received an email from him:

“My wife and I joined our Baker Community neighbors/friends last night for a Thanksgiving gathering and I could only compare it to how the very first Thanksgiving must have felt. Sharing a meal and conversation with new and old acquaintances gave chance to strengthen relationships. Everyone had a chance to offer what they were thankful for and one of the common responses is the relationship being formed by our community partnerships. My wife and I are blessed to have been invited to take part in the celebration and are truly thankful for the new friendships and the inspiration given to me to know the value of these partnerships. Friendship is gold and just as my wife and I were offered the many hands of friendship as we moved into Halecrest; we now feel the new friendships offered to us. Health and money are surely important but it is a lonely place without friendship. I sometimes worry about the things I don’t have but then I see what I do have and realize how blessed I am to have such a great family, neighbors and friends.”

Only by the grace of God can a white girl who speaks no Spanish and has no experience in community development walk into a community of mostly Hispanic men and women and form lasting friendships. I now know that no matter what I do and what adventures I embark on elsewhere, there are always people in the Baker neighborhood who will welcome me into their homes with open arms and no questions asked. I went into this neighborhood a year and a half ago hoping to teach others about community, but instead they have taught me.

«Ti vorrei sollevare», di Elisa con Giuliano Sangiorgi dei Negramaro, è il brano più trasmesso dalle radio italiane. Il primo singolo tratto da «Heart», il nuovo album della cantante friulana, balza al primo posto del Music Control spodestando «Bodies» di Robbie Williams, che scende al 3° posto. In seconda posizione rimane «Haven’t Met You Yet» di Michael Bublé. Stabile anche «Ad ogni costo» di Vasco Rossi al 4°.

In quinta posizione troviamo «Con la musica alla radio» di Laura Pausini, in salita dal 7°. Seguono l’ex number one «Il sole esiste per tutti» di Tiziano Ferro (6°) e la sorpresa «Empire State Of Mind» di Jay Z e Alicia Keys, che entra nella Top 10 con un balzo di 10 posizioni. Chiudono la Top 10 «Want» di Natalie Imbruglia (8°), «She Wolf» di Shakira (9°) e «L’amore si odia» di Noemi e Fiorella Mannoia, per la prima volta tra i primi dieci dopo due mesi e mezzo di permanenza nel Music Control.

Lontano dai piani alti, spiccano le performance di «Rain» (secondo singolo dal nuovo album di Mika) e «Be Lonely» di Mario Biondi (dal 23° al 16°).  Le più alte nuove entrate della settimana sono «Niente più» di Claudio Baglioni al 35° posto, e «Meet Me Halfway» dei Black Eyed Peas al 36°.

So today my friend Maria and I went into the city to Martin Place to see Mika on Sunrise, hoping to meet him after the show….

We weren’t able to meet him sadly because he left out the back

But we did get to meet his bass/keyboard player Jimmy and his drummer (whose name I forget) so that was awesome…

Also got some cool photos, got our faces (and signs) on tv and generally had fun…

Kinda pissed that Mika didn’t come out after the show considering there was literally 6 of us waiting for photos with him…

I listened to this song for the first time yesterday and I KNEW Imogen Heap was singing with him! I just checked and she composed the song :]

It’s steady as she goes – lots of upward movement on this week’s chart And while two of my favourite songs of 2009, “Symphonies” by Dan Black and “We Are Golden” by Mika drop out of the Top 10, Mr. Black and Mr. Penniman have the top two songs on the new chart. Black’s “Alone” puts him back at #1 after 100 Akres and Roz Bell ruled the roost with “Pink Cadillac” for a month, and Mika’s insanely catchy “Blame It On The Girls” moves to the runner-up spot. The remainder of the Top 10 sees songs by David Rush & Friends, Hot Chelle Rae, and Joshua Radin moving up, while new entries belong to another track from Dan Black’s UN, “Pump My Pumps” and Roz Bell again, with “Heart Attack” from his overlooked CD October.

Songs outside of the Top 10 by Michael Buble, Jay-Z/Alicia Keys, and Madonna would normally be in the Top 10 but are shut out again this week by strong competition. In particular, Madonna’s “Celebration”, a fantastic dance song, is peaking long after radio and clubs had their way with it. All of last week’s entries, led by Lady GaGa’s “Bad Romance”, climb up nicely, with the fastest riser going to U.S. rising star Simon Curtis with his free download “Delusional” from the forthcoming CD 8Bit Heart.

I’ve already blogged about the some of the new entries, but I do want to talk a bit about Kris Allen’s “Live Like We’re Dying”, which bows at #27. Kris’ approach to his songs and his positive song choices are what sets his music apart from the rest, making it all a breath of fresh air in a cluttered 2009. And Michael Buble’s version of the 50’s standard “Cry Me A River”? Blows Adam Lambert’s dramatics out of the water.

At least seeing something like that brings me up. Not that I dislike the rain or “days like this”, it just makes me stay home all day tangled up in a blanket, warm and comfy… watching a movie or playing with my Sims (now I’m more turned to making buildings, I might start sharing some on MTS, he he).

It was a sign!

Anyone ambivalent about Mika might be pleasantly surprised with this gorgeous performance from last night’s Mencap Little Noise Session in the sublime Union Chapel (it’s a church – and it’s got a bar! I heart England.)

Mika headlined and I tip my cap to him. He was a riot. (Alas, Paloma Faith had to cancel – although most people seemed to be there for Mika so weren’t too disappointed.) We also got a taster of 18-year-old Alex Gardner, a Xenomania popstar in the making (and who was being naughty outside smoking and playing guitar at all hours of the night – I can report though, that he was wearing his scarf like a good boy should).

Anyway, small, intimate venue (fab acoustics obviously) and all for a good cause.
