Dall’attore malato di sesso e protagonista esclusivamente di blockbuster miliardari passa al cinema di nicchia e ad un ruolo particolare e pieno di sfumature complesse. ‘Alla scoperta di charlie’ (in originale ‘King of New York’), diretto e scritto da un esordiente Mike Cahill, è una commedia allegra che cerca di parlare al pubblico senza risultare pesante. Al centro della trama c’è il rapporto perduto tra un padre, con un vissuto difficile alla spalle, e la figlia che si è trovata a crescere senza nessuno al suo fianco. Si tratta quindi di un argomento che potrebbe risultare visto fin troppe volte, di conseguenza anche noioso, se non fosse per la bravura che i due protagonisti hanno messo nella loro interpretazione. Douglas è davvero capace, bisogna dirlo, a trasformarsi in un uomo anziano e mezzo matto ma di una pazzia simpatica e assolutamente contagiosa. Evan Rachel Wood si trova ad affrontare il solito ruolo di ragazza cresciuta troppo in fretta, ma lo fa con una tale vivacità che finisce con il prendersi i favori dello spettatore. Per lei quindi un’altro buon voto in pagella, dopo il più che meritato, consenso ottenuto dalla critica in ‘Across the Universe’.
Questo film si basa su un concetto molto semplice: partire da una trama che potrebbe tranquillamente essere quella di un film d’avventura e trasformarla in un commedia brillante sulla famiglia. Già perchè se Douglas fosse stato quello di ‘Alla ricerca della pietra verde’ o se al suo posto ci fossero stati Harrison Ford o Nicholas Cage, le cose avrebbero preso una piega certamente diversa.
Si tratta di un film molto gradevole, adatto a ragazzi ed adulti e pieno di spunti per rilassarsi davanti al grande schermo, riuscendo però anche a riflettere.
Una teenager, Miranda (Evan Rachel Wood), appartenente alla Comunità della California del Sud, viene trascinata dal padre, Charlie (Michael Douglas), un uomo psicologicamente disturbato, che ha passato gli ultimi due anni in un istituto di igiene mentale, in una delle sue tante pazzie: ritrovare l’oro lasciato dai missionari spagnoli. Contro la sua volontà, la ragazza sarà costretta a seguire il padre, per non lasciarlo solo in questa pazza avventura. Fino al momento in cui lei si accorgerà di non sentirsi più obbligata, ma di voler effettivamente essere accanto al genitore e di aver quindi inaspettatamente recuperato l’affetto e la stima che credeva di aver perduto per sempre.
Del resto come dice la Wood nel corso della pellicola, i genitori sono avvantaggiati perchè i figli trovano sempre un motivo per potergli credere. Insomma si tratta di fiducia a prescindere.

Torna al cinema Michael Douglas, lo fa con questo Alla scoperta di Charlie diretto da Mike Cahill. Lo screenplay scritto sempre da Michael Cahill entrò nel 2004 all’American Zoetrope Screenwriting, sebbene non vinse arrivò comunque il finale. Il film uscirà il prossimo 16 Maggio e fu girato in soli 31 giorni. Oltre a Michael Douglas nel cast troviamo Evan Rachel Wood reduce dal successo di Across the universe.

Ki játszik benne: Az idén immár 64 éves Michael Douglas, aki temérdek filmben szerepelt, többek között a Tőzsdecápákban, az Elemi ösztönben, az Öszzeomlásban, a Játsz/mában vagy a Wonder Boys-ban.

A másik főszereplő, a 20 éves Evan Rachel Wood, aki manapság mellékállásban – erőteljes kontrasztként – Marilyn Manson csajaként funkcionál (egy időben úgy is volt, hogy együtt játszanak majd Manson készülő horrorjában, a Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll-ban). Főleg sorozatokban szerepelt korábban, de játszik még egy hamarosan bemutatásra kerülő, igen jófélének tűnő drámában is Uma Thurman-nel.

Mi a sztori: Charlie (Michael Douglas) hosszú idő után végre kijön a helyi pszichiátriai intézetből, aminek eredményeképpen jól felforgatja 16 éves lányának, Mirandának (Evan Rachel Wood) látszólag rendezett életét. Charlie ugyanis szentül meg van győződve róla, hogy egy spanyol felfedező rég elveszett kincse lapul valahol a házuk közelében elásva. Fémdetektorral és kincsvadász könyvekkel felszerelkezve végül kijelenti, hogy a kincs a közeli áruház alatt van, és ráveszi lányát, hogy szerezzen ott egy állást, aztán majd zárás után nekiállnak ásni…

Mike Cahill creates a character based comedy that works and holds interest but plods along and doesn’t suck us in like it should for most of the film.
The premise sounds fun, and is at times, but it is very deliberately paced and feels far longer then its hour and a half run time. The movie follows the mis-adventures of Charlie, the insanely crazy eyed mad bearded Michael Douglas, a recently turffed mental patient and his 16 year old daughter Miranda (Evan Rachel Wood) who has been working and paying the mortgage while she has been left at home alone. Upon Charlie’s return he is immediately on the quest for the lost gold treasure of a group of monks in the 16th century that leads the pair down potential and family issues along the way. There isn’t a lot of plot to deal with and we slowly follow Charlie as he narrows down the potential spots that hold the treasure.
The plot eventually leads them to a Cost Co and their attempt to find the river caves flowing underneath the store that hold the buried treasure. It’s when the story reaches this point that the film is its most enjoyable while also serving as the third act for the film.
I think the story didn’t suck me in like it hoped due to the fact that I am unconvinced by Wood’s performance. She just isn’t believable as Miranda and it doesn’t help her cause that the character herself is unbelievable; in the bad way. Miranda did have a couple of lines that made me laugh but most of the comedy is given to Charlie and Pepper (Willis Burks II) in the hilarious events involving him at the end. Wood just wasn’t believable as the emotional core and her emotions were just not affective.
Douglas is having a ball as Charlie though, as he should, and the movie was clearly sold on the character alone. He is fun and entertaining for 90 min, but the film feels more like a highlight reel for the craziness of Charlie more then a cohesive story. Charlie does sell us on the adventure in the end, even if we might not believe him; I just wish I was more invested throughout.
The film is a moderately entertaining romp that showcases a fun and eccentric character. If you weren’t a fan of Wood before this film like me, she isn’t going to change you here, and she might hurt your overall enjoyment of the film as well. If your a fan of Douglas check it out, and for some light hearted humor you can’t go to wrong with this one either.
