This is a special week for Montreal. The habs centennial celebrations will finally come to an end on Friday, with the game against the Bruins. To celebrate the end of the celebrations, here are a few videos of the introduction of the Habs All Time team that was presented at the Montreal Forum for the Habs 75th Anniversary, back in 1984 (I assume). It was recently posted on HF Boards, and I really wanted to share it here, because the last part is especially great and funny. Enjoy!

Part 1

Part 3 (there’s a little glitch at the start, but watch it anyway)

Aurele Joliat… 83 years old?! What a show!

I wonder who’s the oldest living player in the Habs history now. Maybe we’ll find out on Friday…

~~~
Just a word about the state of the Habs. I really like what I’m seeing. Sure, this is still a .500 team, which is not very impressive, and not enough to make the playoffs (82 points won’t cut it). But this is a team that’s battling through injuries, and it’s doing pretty well. And it’s fun to watch. Everyone speaks about character, and I think it’s well deserved. This is really a complete change from what we were used to see over the last few seasons. The games are always close, even against some of the best teams in the league. They never give up, even when they’re down one or two goals, and the youngsters are not looking out of place, which is a nice surprise.
Overall, I have to say I’m now fully enamored with this team. It’s not a complete surprise, because I wasn’t really expecting to turn my back on the habs, but it’s a nice feeling after all the angst caused by the massive changes of this summer. It took me a while to get used to the new faces, but I really like what I’m seeing now. Gomez is probably the guy I’m still the most uncomfortable with. But other than that, it’s fine. I’m especially high on Cammalleri, which surprises me a lot. Frankly, when he arrived, I was excited because he’s a great player, but I didn’t really like his personality. He always seemed like the perfect child. The overly polite one, always smiling and saying the right things. I thought it was a little boring, and maybe a little superficial. But I’m now fully on the Cammie bandwagon. Sure he is still always saying the right things with a pretty smile on his face, but he is also quite honest with the media when the team sucks. And he seems to be enjoying a lot playing for Montreal. And well, the fact that he’s scoring goals and playing hard is nice too.
~~~

Bravo aux Alouettes de Montréal! I’m not really into football, let alone the CFL, but it’s still nice to see the Montreal teams doing well this year. After the Impact, the Als are now champions too. Hum, is there any other team that could follow this trend?? *pokes habs*

~~~
I know this post is already too long, but I have an occasion to do a little bit of self-congratulation, so I won’t miss it! There is a tournament of Habs hockey blogs taking place at the NHL Arena forum, and this blog is in the list. You can vote for me there. DO IT!
C’est assez incroyable ce qui est en train de se passer chez le Canadien. En moins de deux semaines, l’équipe a perdu, au profit de la liste des blessés, Jaroslav Spacek, Brian Gionta, Scott Gomez, et probablement les deux frères Kostistyn en plus ! Le plus vieux se serait blessé en troisième hier en recevant un tir d’un défenseur de Columbus. Sergei, lui, a une entorse et est incertain.
Je suis excité de voir David Desharnais commencer le match pour le CH ce soir, ça a l’air d’un très bon joueur, mais je préfère quand même compter sur une équipe de partants et de vrais joueurs établis de la LNH !
En plus, Montréal va peut-être devoir jouer à seulement 19 joueurs ce soir si la décision de Sergei s’avère négative.
Eh merde! Va falloir voir d’où vient tout ça. Malchance, ou un mauvais entraînement ? Il est à remarquer que, des nouveaux venus du Canadien, seuls Paul Mara, Travis Moen et Marc-André Bergeron seront en uniforme ce soir.
Au moins, l’équipe est en train de se batir une personnalité, est en train de devenir, en fait, une VRAIE équipe. Le Tricolore n’a pas perdu en temps réglementaire à ses quatre derniers matchs malgré l’absence de ces joueurs importants. Je ne serais pas surpris par une défaite ce soir, la question est de savoir si le Tricolore va bien ou mal perdre. C’est un vrai test pour la troupe de Jacques Martin. J’espère qu’on gagnera, ou qu’on perdra avec dignité ce soir, sans abandonner Price et lui laisser 40-50 tirs. Ça serait mauvais pour tout le monde.
Parlant de personnalité, deux joueurs retiennent mon attention : Tomas Plekanec et Mike Cammalleri. Le premier a appris à jouer sans Kovalev et en tant que centre #1 “à temps plein”, et il relève très bien le défi avec 24 points, dont 19 passes (!) en autant de matchs ; Cammalleri, lui, en est déjà à 12 buts et semble se reprendre après une passe plus tranquille. L’équipe repose actuellement sur ces deux joueurs… et sur Price, ne l’oubliant.
Un seul hic à tout ça : Plekanec n’est pas sous contrat pour 2010-2011, et si Gainey ne lui fait pas apposer sa signature au bas d’un document au cours des prochaines semaines, il pourrait lui coûter très très très très cher cet été, surtout si Tomas continue sur sa lancée et fait 85-90 points.
Grouille-toi Robert !
En månad före jul tog Montreal emot Columbus Blue Jackets i nattens enda NHL-match. Efter att ha legat under med 3-2 inför sista perioden så vände Montreal och vann med 5-3. Detta trots att man har viktiga spelare som Andre Markov, Scott Gomez, Brian Gionta, Jaroslav Spacek och Hal Gill på skadelistan. Anton Strålman gjorde en bra match för Columbus, med ett mål och en assist, men det räckte inte hela vägen fram den här gången.
Canadiens nyförvärv Mike Cammalleri (med förflutet i Los Angeles och Calgary) gjorde matchens första mål men Columbus kvitterade kort därefter när lagets storstjärna Rick Nash läckert spelade fram förre Ottawa-spelaren Antoine Vermette. Strålman fick den andra assisten på målet. Blue Jackets tog också ledningen i powerplay efter att Montreals Josh Gorges åkt ut för tripping efter en halvt misslyckad hederlig gammal arseltackling. Efter en del flipper hamnade trissan hos Strålman som satte den bakom Carey Price i Montreal-kassen.
Columbus var hetare än Montreal i första och andra perioden, men trots stort underläge i skott kunde Marc-Andre Bergeron kvittera för Habs efter knappt halva andra. Ungefär en minut efter kvitteringen åkte dock Montreal på en utvisning. Travis Moen trycktes upp i sargen av Rick Nash och det såg misstänkt ut som att Moen slog huvudet i plexit, utan åtgärd från domaren som stod två meter från situationen. Moen surnade till och gav tillbaks och fick en tvåa för roughing och Columbus gjorde förstås mål på det efterföljande numerära överläget.
Fler mål blev det dock inte i andra perioden och det var mycket tack vare matchens lirare, Carey Price. Totalt fick Price mota 33 skott i första och andra perioden och 8 i den sista. Hade det inte varit för att Price höll kvar Habs i matchen så hade det förmodligen slutat annorlunda. Den unga lovande målvakten blev dock högst välförtjänt utsedd till matchens lirare.
I sista perioden kom Montreal igen starkt och vände genom att göra tre mål innan matchen var slut. Max Pacioretty spelade fram backveteranen Roman Hamrlik som drog på ett rungande skott i ribban bakom Columbus målis Mathieu Garon (som startade sin NHL-karriär i Montreal) och i villervallan som uppstod kunde Glen Metropolit slå in kvitteringen. Drygt två minuter senare skapade Habs kaos i Columbus försvarszon igen och Bergeron kunde sätta sitt andra mål och ge Canadiens ledningen med 4-3. Maxime Lapierre fastställde slutresultatet till 5-3 med knappt fem minuter kvar, efter en kontring iscensatt av Sergei Kostitsyn, yngre bror till Montreals forward Andrei Kostitsyn. Det var för övrigt Sergeis första NHL-match för säsongen. Montreal kunde sen hålla undan utan några större problem inför en jublande hemmapublik i Bell Centre och man kunde sålunda bärga den fjärde segern på fem matcher.
Hoppas på repris inatt när Montreal åker till Pittsburgh för att ta sig an Sidney Crosbys och Evgeni Malkins Pengiuns, regerande Stanley Cup-mästare.
I just found some cash in the pocket of my winter coat which I was planning on spending on a Slap Chop™ and a Mike Cammalleri jersey but I decided it would be better spent on my very own copy of the new Risk Management–Principles and Guidelines (ISO 31000).
For those of you awaiting my review, Tim Leech’s review is good enough for me. And while he suggests this is the best 112 Swiss Francs you will ever spend, I would argue that a 10 lb Toblerone would be the best 112 Swiss Francs you ever spend, with ISO 31000 a very close second.
See Tim’s review by clicking here
Wow. Habbies had it until a minute left in the third when Bergeron tied it up after a shot from the point ended up on this stick. This one went to shootout where Cammalleri had the only goal and boy was it nice. I’m pretty sure he got me pregnant with that snipe.
Ryan White and Tom Pyatt played their first games in the NHL and both had an O.K. game. White even managed an assist on the goal by Metropolit late in the first.
I’m VERY pleased with Mathieu Carle. He is really fighting for a spot on this team. I can tell you that I would much rather have Carle on the ice in any situation then I would Hal Gill.
I think the really story of the night was Carey “I’m Fucking Crazy” Price. Pricey really deserved the shutout, but after the goal by Bergeron he was absolutely possessed. I couldn’t believe the intensity in the shootout, it was almost scary. I don’t think I have ever seen Price show THAT much intensity. He threw those pucks away like they weren’t worth his time.
If Price can continue playing like that then he absolutely deserves to be the legitimate starter.
But when it gets this predictable, you get bored. Through 11 games of this season, the Bruins’
But when it gets this predictable, you get bored.
Through 11 games of this season, the Bruins’ record is as such: Loss, win, loss, win, loss, win, loss, win, (shootout) loss, win, loss. This leaves us with 11 points – fourth in the division, but only four points behind Buffalo, three behind Ottawa, and one behind Montreal.
It also puts us in a three-way tie for eighth in the conference right now with Philadelphia and Tampa Bay, but the Flyers get the edge based on that shootout win they had against us. Curse you, Ray Emery!
Last night’s game against the Devils was a heartbreaker – the boys had one of their best starts all season, only to lose the game on a Dainius Zubrus goal 18:34 into the third period. The Lunch-Pail Crew – Shawn Thornton, Steve Begin, and Byron Bitz – especially played well. An exchange between my friend and I during the game went as follows:
“No one remind Bitz that he is not supposed to play pretty.”
“Are our fourth-liners… oh my god, GOOD?”
“Shhhhhh. Don’t tell them that they are fourth-liners… they forgot.”
I love the Lunch-Pailers, past and present. They’re the guys who are going to get us through the injury-induced absence of Marc Savard. You can also call Daniel Paille and Vladimir Sobotka members of this prestigious group. These guys, the grit, heart, and soul of the team, are the ones who score the key goals for us and make the key plays, not the top six.
Why do I say that? Every team we need to beat has a solid top line (when healthy, ours is Marco Sturm, Savard, and Michael Ryder; Montreal’s features Mike Cammalleri, Scott Gomez, and Brian Gionta; Philadelphia has Simon Gagne, Jeff Carter, and Daniel Briere, et cetera). But not every team we need to beat has a solid fourth line. Come on, do you really think lines with Arron Asham and Georges Laraque stand a chance in matchups against our boys? I think not.
The Bruins play the Edmonton Oilers in a matinee tomorrow. Not to jinx the pattern, but I foresee a win…
Montreal appears to be right on track for their annual low-seeded playoff finish, early playoff exit
Montreal appears to be right on track for their annual low-seeded playoff finish, early playoff exit, and consequent coach pressure and firing in December of 2010. The Canadiens have been playing better defensively lately, at least as far as I can derive from tickerbar scores, but the Penguins absolutely manhandled them; Montreal appeared to be playing no discernible system, the supposedly red-hot Jaroslav Halak turned in a pedestrian performance, and the Canadiens’ Gomez-Gionta-Cammalleri “Legion of OK Dudes” combination was far from terror-inspiring.
In short, Montreal resembles a better-coached ‘08-’09 Tampa Bay Lightning: a suddenly high-priced roster of more than 50% new guys all frantically trying to mesh together to resemble a complete hockey team. I imagine they’ll still make the playoffs, though, because unlike the Lightning, they’ll be motivated by the fact that if they miss the playoffs, the citizens of Montreal will hunt down and murder their families. But I don’t see them going anywhere after that.
Other bright spots:
- Free agent splash Mike Rupp matched his goal total from last season (3 in 72 games) just 12 games into the season.
- I laughed pretty hard in the First when Malkin slipped a saucer pass to Dupuis for a mini breakaway and Steigerwald excitedly announced “Here comes Dupuis all alone…saved by Halak.” You’re not allowed to excitedly raise your voice if the person with the scoring chance is Pascal Dupuis. It’s the same as the old Kip Miller rule.
- I find myself rooting extra hard against Montreal these days solely because they took on Scott Gomez’s contract and helped the Rangers, making them guilty of some “Accessory To Team I Hate” crime. Beating them by 5 goals while Nonfactor-ez turned in a typical nonfactor performance was far sweeter than your standard Northeast Division win.
- Sidney Crosby is good.
Quelle belle performance de Mike Cammalleri hier soir avec trois buts dont celui de la victoire en prolongation.
C’est ce qui me fatigue justement avec cette victoire du Canadien. Encore une fois ils laissent un point à l’adversaire.
Je me répète mais ce petit point laisser à l’adversaire pourrait venir les hanter en avril prochain.
C’est très inquiétant chers partisans du CH.
Jusqu’ici cette saison le Canadien ne compte qu’une seule victoire en temps régulier contre les pauvres Islanders de New York.
Parlant de ces pauvres Islanders, j’ignore comment a été conçu le calendrier de la LNH mais après les avoir affronté jeudi à Montréal, voilà que le Canadien les affronte à nouveau lundi au Centre Bell.
Pendant ce temps les Islanders de Charles Wang seront retournés à la maison pour un match hier soir subissant la défaite en prolongation contre les puissants Capitals par la marque de 3-2.
Donc lundi soir rien de bien passionnant au Centre Bell, la position 9 dans l’Est recevra la position 13 dans cette même conférence.
« Parlez-en bien… parlez-en mal… mais parlez-en », entend-on souvent dans le milieu de l
« Parlez-en bien… parlez-en mal… mais parlez-en », entend-on souvent dans le milieu de la publicité. Ce dicton est revenu récemment lors du débat entourant la publicité d’Octane mettant en vedette Georges Laraque. Malheureusement, en relations publiques, il arrive qu’entre le « parlez-en bien » et le « parlez-en mal », il y a le « parlez-en trop ». Celui-ci finit invariablement par se retourner contre l’objet d’une telle attention médiatique.
Peu de gens se souviennent que Mario Dumont n’a pas été le premier chef de l’Action démocratique du Québec. Le chef fondateur est en fait Jean Allaire, qui vient de refaire surface dans les nouvelles à l’occasion de la publication du mémoire préparé par le groupe de réflexion Avenir Québec, dont il est la figure de proue. En 1994, quelques mois à peine après la fondation de l’ADQ, M. Allaire, victime de problèmes de santé graves, a dû laisser la place au jeune Mario Dumont. Âgé de 24 ans, l’ex-président de l’aile jeunesse du Parti libéral du Québec s’était déjà fait connaître par sa rébellion contre son chef Robert Bourassa. L’année même de sa nomination en tant que chef, M. Dumont se fait élire dans la circonscription de Rivière-du-Loup, qu’il gardera jusqu’à son départ en 2009.
Doué et frondeur, Mario Dumont s’est rapidement fait connaître de la population québécoise, notamment lors du débat des chefs en 1998. Cette popularité fut à la fois la plus grande force et la plus grande faiblesse du parti. Tout le monde connaissait Mario Dumont, mais personne ne connaissait son parti, au point où la formation politique fit changer son nom pour « Action démocratique du Québec – Équipe Mario Dumont » auprès du Directeur général des élections afin que ses partisans sachent quelle case cocher sur le bulletin de vote.
Pendant les années qui ont suivi, l’ADQ fut enfermée dans un cercle vicieux : la population ne connaissait pas l’équipe parce que les médias ne s’intéressaient qu’à Mario Dumont, et les médias ne s’intéressaient qu’à Mario Dumont parce que l’équipe n’était pas connue. Les stratèges des autres partis firent leurs choux gras de cette situation : « L’ADQ est le parti d’un seul homme », répétèrent-ils jusqu’à ce que cette opinion s’imprègne dans la population. Lors de la campagne électorale de 2008, les journalistes soulignèrent à M. Dumont son absence à la présentation des candidats adéquistes de la région de Québec. Le chef adéquiste leur a alors rappelé qu’eux-mêmes lui reprochaient de faire trop d’ombre à ses candidats. « Il faudrait vous brancher! » leur a-t-il lancé.
Malgré l’adhésion de Gilles Taillon, ancien président du Conseil du patronat (et maintenant chef), et l’émergence de quelques figures comme Sébastien Proulx et Éric Caire, M. Dumont et l’ADQ ne sont jamais parvenus à sortir de cette impasse. La déconfiture du parti tient à plusieurs causes, y compris ses propres lacunes, bien sûr; cependant, l’indifférence des médias envers tout ce qui ne s’appelait pas Mario Dumont y contribua certainement. Au bout du compte, le succès de Mario Dumont fut à la fois la meilleure locomotive et le pire boulet de l’ADQ.
Le Canadien semble pris dans la même impasse. Il ne connaît pas de succès parce qu’il n’a pas de joueur de la trempe de Sidney Crosby, Aleksandr Ovetchkine ou Vincent Lecavalier, mais il n’arrive pas à signer une telle vedette parce qu’il n’a pas suffisamment de succès.
Le Tricolore pensait pourtant avoir trouvé son « joueur de concession » en la personne de Carey Price. La popularité du jeune gardien de but fut moussée par une habile campagne marketing et médiatique, assortie de tee-shirts, d’affiches, d’entrevues avec de prestigieuses revues sportives, de « spins » bien menés auprès des médias, de surnoms astucieusement choisis : Le Sauveur, Jésus Price, le joyau de l’organisation, l’avenir du Canadien…
On connaît la suite. Une série de contre-performances, des photos juteuses et des rumeurs de fêtes nocturnes prolongées plongèrent le cerbère dans le cyclone médiatique. La machine à rumeurs s’emballa, ce qui a fait dire à M. Price après coup : « J’ai eu l’impression de me retrouver dans la peau de Britney Spears. » La comparaison était judicieuse : comme la vedette pop, le jeune gardien était devenu pour les journalistes un os à gruger.
Or, les médias ne lâchent jamais un os tant qu’il y a de la viande dessus. Pourquoi s’intéresser à autre chose puisqu’on a sous le nez de quoi occuper les ondes et faire vendre des journaux? C’est trop fatigant de s’intéresser à d’autres personnalités quand on a un Mario Dumont ou un Carey Price sous la main pour remplir des feuillets avec peu d’effort. On peut gloser sur la responsabilité personnelle du jeune homme, car il en a indéniablement une; mais la furie médiatique y a participé, tout comme l’avidité du service de marketing du Canadien, pressé de convertir la popularité de sa jeune vedette en espèces sonnantes et trébuchantes. Ce qui devait arriver arriva : à la dernière partie des séries 2009, la foule excédée hua le gardien, qui sortit de ses gonds et leva sarcastiquement les bras en guise de réponse. Un beau « pétage de plombs » mutuel, comme il en a lui-même convenu le lendemain devant les journalistes. Ironiquement, à la dernière campagne électorale de Mario Dumont, ses nerfs avaient également commencé à lâcher, comme en témoignent nombre de déclarations étranges qui avaient fait sourciller tant les journalistes que ses propres candidats.
N’eût été du grand ménage estival de Bob Gainey, ce cirque aurait sans doute continué pendant la saison actuelle. Heureusement pour Carey Price, l’attention des médias a été détournée par l’arrivée des Gomez, Gionta, Cammalleri et compagnie. Mentionnons au crédit du jeune cerbère qu’il profité de l’été pour se refaire une santé et tirer des leçons de son amère expérience. Gageons que le service de marketing du Canadien, de son côté, n’a strictement rien appris et refera la même erreur avec son prochain « joueur de concession ». Quelqu’un a-t-il chuchoté le nom de Louis Leblanc?
*************************
- La surexposition médiatique de Carey Price, qui l’a rendu vulnérable aux incidents médiatiques ( « accident-prone », diraient les anglophones), aura également des effets sur ce blogue. En effet, le jeune gardien a fourni beaucoup de matière à comparaison avec divers incidents du monde politique. Cependant, j’essaierai de ne pas l’utiliser trop souvent comme exemple, et je ferai de mon mieux pour conserver une position critique, mais respectueuse.
- En politique, la règle veut que l’on déclare publiquement tout intérêt personnel qui puisse causer un conflit avec les responsabilités liées au poste que l’on occupe. À titre de blogueuse et afin de respecter le principe de transparence, je révèle donc que mon joueur préféré est Jaroslav Halák. Veuillez noter, par contre, que j’aime bien Carey Price lui-même, malgré le manque total de subtilité de l’opération marketing montée autour de sa personne par l’organisation des Canadiens. J’en profite pour saluer tous les fans de Price et de Halák qui respectent les deux gardiens et qui prennent soin de défendre leur cerbère favori autrement qu’en vomissant à grands torrents sur l’autre.
- Je dois me procurer le livre de Bob Sirois, Le Québec mis en échec, et le lire avant de vous en parler. Je conseille aux internautes d’en faire autant avant de descendre M. Sirois en flammes. Jusqu’à maintenant, les réactions que j’ai lues en ligne sont en grande majorité du fiel qui témoigne non pas d’une ouverture envers les non-Québécois, mais d’une haine de nous-mêmes en tant que collectivité, d’une auto-flagellation puritaine démente en phase avec le « Québec bashing » ambiant qui domine ce débat. C’est vrai qu’à en juger par l’orthographe douteuse d’une part importante de ces commentaires haineux, un grand nombre de leurs auteurs semblent à peine capables de déchiffrer un article de journal jusqu’au bout, alors un livre au complet…
Je note cependant que François Gagnon, au premier entracte de la partie contre les Thrashers d’Atlanta, a été capable de faire une critique argumentée et posée du livre de M. Sirois. Merci à tous ceux qui suivent son exemple et font l’effort de critiquer ce livre de façon respectueuse.
- Enfin, j’en profite pour témoigner ma sympathie à Mélanie-Claude Bazinet, alias Miss Miller, qui a quitté L’Attaque à cinq cette semaine. J’espère qu’elle reprendra son blogue Le hockey pour les filles, qui m’a servi d’inspiration pour le lancement de Patinage hors glace.
Uh oh. The Habs have lost 3 in a row and are now headed home, which brings the emocity to a higher level than it was after losing to Vancouver.
Oh yeah baby, the hockey season is on and my beloved wonderful team the Montreal Canadians edged out the Buffalo Sabres in OT by a score of 2-1. For the second game of the hockey season, les habitants de montréal took the game and two points in OT. Carey Price continues to be outstanding and excellent in his goaltending net. The game last night was quite a chippy rough physical game.
This article is written and owned by: Arnelle Durocher
In the first period Buffalo owned the habs. However in the second and third period Les habitants owned and dominated the Sabres. They threw the Sabres in confusion when they came flying out, skating, and one upped any physical combat that the Sabres handed them. My team is looking good this year with the new young players and the trades that occured over the course of the summer.
In fact the line of Gomez, Cammalleri and Gionta whom produced the game winning OT goal last night is an impressive line. Whenever they are on the ice action occurs. Gomez in fact reminds me in many ways of some of the Montreal players of old. He is small, but he can take anything physical, he checks and is not fearful of receiving a check, he is not afraid of getting in the corners and fighting for the puck. If someone invites him into fisticuffs he will not back down even though the opposing player is looming over him in size.
He reminds me of players of old like Guy Carbonneau, Mats Naslund, Henri Richard, Yvan Cournoyer type of players. In fact he also reminded me of the old Nordiques pain in the ass player to hate Dale Hunter. This line of Gomez, Cammalleri and Gionta also reminded me of the old line of Mario Tremblay, Doug Risebrough and Pierre Bouchard. That line when they first arrived in the NHL and played for Montreal used to get on the ice and there was always action and physical combat with them.
Buffalo scored a power play goal in the first period. The Habs answered the Sabres in the second and took the win and two points in OT.
The announcers had some difficulty with Montreal’s second period goal, however the refs were on par, the goal was in the net befor the net was off its mooring. This video shows the replay on the puck in the net before the net was pushed off its mooring. The goal rightfully counted.
(0-0-0)
Recent News:
Calgary finished their preseason with a 3-2-2 mark. Theoren Fleury was the story of the preseason, making a valiant attempt to stage a comeback to the National Hockey League following a six-year absence. That heartwarming story will not carry over to the regular season as Fleury was one of the last cuts by Darryl Sutter as training camp came to a conclusion. Jason Jaffray is the next feel good story, and one that carries over to the regular season. After years of toiling in the minors, the veteran pro from nearby Rimbey, Alberta is on the opening night roster for the Flames. Jaffray posted 49 points in 56 games for the AHL’s Manitoba Moose in 2008-09.
In stark comparison to the Flames, Vancouver finished their preseason with an astounding 7-0-2 record. Roberto Luongo saw nearly four full games of play and posted phenomenal numbers, with a 1.30 GAA and a 0.947 SV%. Apart from Luongo’s astounding play, the Canucks preseason success was also helped along by the play of newcomer Sergei Shirokov. The soft handed Russian netted seven points in preseason. His strong performance was ultimately a factor in the Canucks assigning blue chip prospect Cody Hodgson back to his junior ranks.
Last Meeting:
In Calgary’s final preseason tune up, the Canucks stole the show with a 2-1 shootout victory. Both starting goaltenders, Roberto Luongo and Miikka Kiprusoff stood on their heads in what was a goaltending showdown that is sure to be repeated when these teams go head-to-head in the regular season.
Key Players:
Calgary- Nigel Dawes had a strong preseason performance for the Flames. Watch for Dawes to be buzzing around on the ice tonight. He is most likely to draw a slot on one of the top two lines and will more than likely see a lot of special teams play as well. Dawes strong two way abilities have allowed him to be quite successful within the new system that Brent Sutter has implemented in Calgary. Another player to watch for Calgary is Olli Jokinen. The Finn bulldozed his way through the preseason in similar to fashion to how he played upon first arriving in Calgary at last year’s trade deadline. Whether or not Jokinen can sustain this type of play over an entire season is yet to be seen. With Calgary losing primary scoring from Mike Cammalleri, and secondary scoring from Todd Bertuzzi over the offseason, it will be imperative for Jokinen to improve upon last season’s 57 points.
Vancouver- As mentioned earlier, Sergei Shirokov played like a man possessed during preseason action. The Canucks will rely on him to provide offense all season long. People league wide will be watching to see if Shirokov can translate that strong preseason into a great regular season. Once again, Roberto Luongo will be the man to beat in between the pipes Vancouver this season. With a strong preseason under his belt, and an Olympic roster spot looming, expect Luongo to continue his strong play. Lastly, one of two key additions made in the offseason will make their Canucks debuts tonight. The acquisition of Christian Ehrhoff from the San Jose Sharks and Mathieu Schneider via free agency brings experience, offense, stability, and much needed depth to the Canucks blueline. With Schneider shelved with a shoulder injury, Ehrhoff will be the one to watch.
Injuries-
C’est mon 100ième billet sur ce blogue qui grossit en popularité à chaque jour et je tiens à vous remercier personnellement… Comme je suis quelqu’un de très concept (ironie gratuite!), j’ai décidé de parler de l’équipe qui fêtera (encore) son centennaire cette saison: le Canadien de Montréal!!!
Premièrement, je donne ma meilleure note de bulletin à Bob Gainey. Il a fait de bons choix lors des signatures de joueurs autonomes: Scott Gomez, Mike Camalleri et Brian Gionta seront des joueurs qui transformeront rapidement l’attaque de l’équipe. L’ajout de Jaroslav Spacek à la ligne bleue compensera aisément la perte de Komisarek…
Chez les gardiens, Carey Price devra garder son focus sur le sport pour espérer garder son poste. Jaroslav Halak est pas tellement loin derrière avec le camp d’entraînement qu’il a connu… L’entraîneur Jacques Martin devra diriger d’une main ferme ses deux gardiens afin d’accentuer l’esprit d’une saine compétition!
Lorsque l’on parle du Canadien, on ne peut passer à côté des scandales et à 36 heures du début de la saison, il y en a deux qui planent: la situation du capitaine et la future transaction de Sergei Kostitsyn.
Pour ce qui est du capitaine, je ne sais pas pourquoi Gainey et Martin hésite…tout le monde le sait que ce sera Brian Gionta qui recevra le “C”… Je l’avais même prédit dans ce billet du 3 septembre dernier. Commencer une saison sans capitaine c’est comme signaler aux autres équipes qu’il y a mésentente dans l’organisation. Vite, nommons un capitaine avant la mise au jeu contre les Maple Leafs demain soir!!!
Pour ce qui est de Kostitsyn, je comprends le Canadien de ne pas vouloir l’échanger…ou bien de le perdre à la Ligue Kontinentale de Russie!!! Cependant, il n’accepte pas son sort et refuse de rejoindre le club-école de l’équipe… Quest-ce qu’on fait??? On fait comme il veut et on l’échange contre une douzaine de bâtons?? Mettons que ça débute bien mal une carrière dans la LNH… Pour lui faire peur, on pourrait lui raconter l’histoire de Mikhail Grabovsky…ça le calmera peut-être!!!
Finalement, je prédis que l’édition 2009-2010 du Canadien terminera au… Non! Je le dis pas tout de suite! Surveillez mon billet de ce soir alors que je ferai mes prédictions pour la Conférence de l’Est. Pour ceux que ça intéresse de voir mes prédictions dans l’Ouest, cliquez ICI!!! C’est demain soir que ça commence…nos blondes redeviendront veuves de hockey…encore une fois! Snif! Snif!
Recent News:
Calgary has opened their regular season quick out of the gate. With two wins in their first two games against division rivals, the Flames couldn’t have asked for a better start. While they got away with murder on Saturday night against the Oilers with a 4-3 victory thanks to Nikolai Khabibulin’s bumbling wandering, the Flames still looked strong. The Flames special teams have been a key factor in their first two victories, with the powerplay cruising along at a 66.7% clip. The penalty kill has also gotten the job done and currently stands at 75%.
Montreal has also started their regular season with two wins in two games, albeit in much more dramatic fashion than the Flames. Thus far, the Canadiens have squeaked out two overtime victories against their rival Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Buffalo Sabres. A huge blow that the team recently experienced was the loss of all-star defenseman Andrei Markov. Markov was injured in the Canadiens first game. He is expected to be out for 4-6 months with lacerated tendons. To fill Markov’s spot, the Canadiens recently recalled young Yannick Weber from Hamilton of the American Hockey League.
Apart from this being the two teams’ first meeting of the year, this will be their 100th all-time meeting.
Last Season:
Last season Montreal and Calgary split their season series, with each team getting one win apiece. Montreal was victorious in December 2008 with a 4-1 victory, while the Flames triumphed 6-2 in February 2009.
Key Players:
Calgary- The man to watch right now is Miikka Kiprusoff. So far this season he has squashed his history of slow starts. Apart from two wins, Kiprusoff is also currently sporting a 0.921 save percentage. He has been peppered so far this season, already having faced 76 shots over those first two victories. If the Flames are to continue this early season success, Kiprusoff will have to continue his stellar play.
On the offensive side of the things, the player to watch for Calgary is Rene Bourque. Last season, he managed to rack up 40 points on the strength of 21 goals, in only 58 games. Bourque has continued his strong play with the start of this season. Notching a goal and three points in his first two games, Bourque is the Flames current scoring leader. He has once again shown a strong two-way game, and has also been seeing ice-time during all different points in the game.
Montreal- In similar fashion to Calgary, the Canadiens can attribute much of their early season success to the play of their netminder. After finishing last season with only 23 wins, and a 0.905 save percentage, Carey Price is proving his doubters wrong so far in 2009-10. In two victories, Price is rocking an impressive 0.951 save percentage alongside a 1.89 goals against average. With 81 shots faced so far, Price has been a busy man, but has been up to the task.
Mike Cammalleri will be the Canadiens skater to keep an eye on tonight. After putting up an impressive 39 goals with the Flames last season, Cammalleri headed out east and has been a strong presence on Montreal’s top unit. This will be his first game against his former team. Travis Moen will also be a player worth watching. Usually known for his grit over his scoring touch, Moen is currently leading the Canadiens with two goals in two games. While also employing his reckless physical game, Moen has been a force to be reckoned with so far this season. Expect to see him buzzing in the Flames end and causing nothing but havoc and chaos for the Flames defenders.
Injuries:
..
Calgary- Cory Sarich (bruised foot) and Brian McGrattan (shoulder) are day-to-day.
Montreal- Andrei Markov (lacerated tendons), Ryan O’Byrne (knee), Kyle Chipchura (shoulder), Olivier Fortier (shoulder), Alex Henry (fractured hand) are all on injured reserve. Glen Metropolit is questionable for tonite’s game (sore ribs).
