Here’s a low-res progress shot of the Cemetery Piss logo that Lane is drawing. It’s actually a lot more complete by now. We’re experimenting with adding some gruesome, skullish eyes since the logo already looks a lot like the bottom half of a jawless skull. Lane also posted some new work here.

Q & A

Wrapped up in books

It’s nearly five years now since the music media’s microscope focused in on Sheffield as acts like Bromhead’s Jacket, Little Man Tate and Long Blondes were heralded to define the decade. And though only Arctic Monkeys may have made it into the big leagues of Brit Awards and world tours, there was still a lot of talent in the city of steel. Joe Carnall was one man to find himself in the middle of such excitement fronting the now defunct Milburn, whose brief but bright life was noted by two albums of intelligent, homegrown indie rock. Now joined by ex-Arctic Monkey’s man, Andy Nicholson, he’s back with The Book Club, and the familiar sounds of tight rhythms, neat guitar and a vibrant attitude of someone doing something they love. He told us all about this new chapter.

So it was last year that Milburn split up?
Yeah, March 2008 was our last gig. We’d just gone as far as we could have gone. We could have still carried on writing songs, but it just seemed right. Maybe it might turn out to be a mistake and we’ll get back together. But it was a clean break and it’s going well.

How long did it take for The Book Club to come together?
I spent about six months not really doing anything with music. Every time I would try write a song it would end up being about the split and it took time to gain new inspiration and go after new ideas. Then after all these shit songs, these nice ones started coming out. It was just going back to beginning and writing cos I enjoyed it.

And Andy Nicholson who used to be with Arctic Monkeys is in the band too?
Yeah, we’ve been friends for a while. And we needed a bass player and he was up for doing it.

So this is your first big tour around the UK tour with The Book Club?
We’ve just done three gigs so far so it’s really early days yet. But we’re all very excited. Sometimes it feels like we’re cheating a bit playing decent venues cos of our names, but it’ll be good to back on the road. It’s been a while. It’s good to get back to Scotland too. King Tut’s is always good and we’ve done Dundee, Aberdeen and Edinburgh. It seems the further north you get the more people appreciate you getting on stage.

Has the reception been good so far?
It’s been great because all we’ve really had so far is our MySpace and the four songs on that. But people have been going on and listening and commenting and saying nice things.

What about something physical?
I’ve always seen that to be a good band you’ve got to be a good live act first, so we’re concentrating on that at the moment. And once we’re comfortable on stage, that’s when we’ll get recording.

There’s a future for the band though?
Definitely. I’ll see how I manage with university though as well – I’m at Sheffield doing history. I’m in my second year though, so it’s still possible to play all these gigs. Most of the dates on this upcoming tour are just long weekends.

And Sheffield’s still home then?
It’s a good place. I can’t imagine living anywhere else really.

Is the music scene still as strong as it was when Milburn first came out in 2005 and you had Arctic Monkeys, Bromhead’s Jacket, Little Man Tate etc?
There’s still a lot happening. I think after a surge like that though, it’s natural for a little break. Perhaps Milburn would have fared better then if we were from Glasgow or somewhere, away from the media attention and always being compared to these other bands. But it also did as a massive favour. And if you’re good, you’ll make it.

http://www.myspace.com/thebookclubofficial

Joe Carnall and the Book Club play The Dog House, Dundee on 10 Oct; The Hive, Edinburgh on 12 Oct, and King Tut’s, Glasgow on 13 Oct.

Jo Carnall & The Book Club

Former Arctic Monkeys bassist Andy Nicholson has revealed how he came to join new band Joe Carnall And The Book Club.

With his former band recently headlining the Reading And Leeds Festivals Nicholson has been playing in the new outfit led by former Milburn man Carnall.

The band have just announced their gigs and have posted demos up at MySpace.com/thebookclubofficial. Nicholson left Arctic Monkeys in 2006 while Milburn split last year.

MySpace blog – Saturday 8 September 2007

A few years ago, there were just a handful of music festivals held around the country during the summer months. This summer it has felt like a handful have taken place every weekend. Alongside all of the established large festivals, so many smaller ones have started up. Some have grown to become regular occasions themselves and you must be a pretty terrible band if you have not been asked to perform out in the great outdoors during the last few weeks

The increase in festivals logically means more people are interested in pitching a tent in some remote farmer’s field and enjoying two or three days of cider, music and unpredictable weather. While it’s fair to say that not all festivals prove to be successful (a friend of mine had the misfortunate of attending an inaugural dance festival where barely any tickets were sold, 98% of the acts pulled out at short notice and the soundsystem was ridiculously quiet. The festival had to be abandoned when sewage spilled onto the site. As if that was bad, the only music still available was Phy-trance!) many others were only spoiled by disappointing weather. TV channels have also provided unrivalled coverage of many festivals. Watching bands live, from the mosh pit or the sofa, appears to be a huge pull at present.

So it was nice to see some of this influx of live music find its way to my part of the world in the shape of Bingley Music Festival (well actually it’s one of at least five festivals held in the area this summer). Funded by the often-maligned Bradford Council, two days of quality live music was available and easily accessible, with Saturday’s music free of charge and even Sunday’s was only £7.50 – a price that even this tight Yorkshireman was happy to pay. With the weather largely dry and plenty of mates in attendance, the festival provided us all with a great weekend.

If taking a harsh view on things, Saturday felt a little like has-beens day with The Jam and The Bluetones headlining. Firstly, at least when I arrived with a belly full of beers supped at home and at the pub on the journey, were a couple of Bradford bands. Neither particularly excited, with the band dubbed ‘Bradford’s next big thing’, White Light Parade, showing a disappointing lack of local knowledge by coming on stage and saying ‘good evening Bradford!”

Still The Bluetones put in a decent performance that included their old classics and some reasonably okay sounding new ones. “We hear this is free for you all, we’re playing for free too” lead singer Mark apparently said (or was I just drunk?). Why are they playing for free? A) Because they’re such good people. B) Because no one would pay to have them on these days or C) they’re lying (or I’m too drunk!). I hope it’s C.

The Jam minus Paul Weller sounds like a tribute act. You can almost imagine the remaining musicians in the band appearing in the ‘guess the identity’ round of Never Mind The Buzzcocks. Still, they’re very entertaining and their new singer does a very convincing impression of Paul Weller. The Jam are on for over an hour and a half and provide great entertainment. If only there were a few less prats around us going a little too crazy. “Isn’t Paul Weller the best songwriter EVER!” declares one ageing skinhead. As the song finishes, he then shouts out “Paul Weller is a w**ker! He’s a rich t**t!”. Indeed.

On the Sunday the line up looks far stronger. We arrive early evening in time to see Sheffield band Milburn impress. Cue opportunities to chant “Yorkshire! Yorkshire!” With a new album out soon (well worth checking out) I expect to hear more about this rocking band in the near future.

And I wouldn’t be disappointed if I never heard about The Twang again. The brummie outfit sound a bit like Happy Mondays but they’re not worthy of tying Shaun Ryder’s shoelaces. While it might be churlish to dismiss a band attempting to copy Ryder’s legendary Mondays on the grounds that they can’t sing to save their lives, their lyrics lack wit, their humour is weak and their tunes are bland. The entertainment comes from seeing the Chavs in the crowd worship their heroes.

“Aren’t the Twang the best band ever?” asks one. I was tempted to dash home and lend him my CD collection to put him straight, if it wasn’t the fact the next time I would see them would be while he flogged them at Bingley’s Carboot sale the following Sunday.

The Twang clear off and with them their fans, so it’s left for the best band on the two day bill to end the show. The Charlatans may not be the major festival headlining force they were a few years ago, but their experience and back catalogue of great songs guarantees a great show. Old classics go down brilliantly and they road test new stuff that suggests their new album will be a worthy purchase. The only disappointment is that, with other bands running behind schedule, they are not allowed to do an encore.

Still it’s a great way to end a really good weekend. The only major complaints been the ridiculous bar system that is wholly inadequate to serve the needs of 5,000 people. Queuing up for two hours for a pint of Carling is no one’s idea of refreshing.

The bizarre decision to ban umbrellas also meant that, as people arrived on a rain soaked Sunday, they had to hand in their brollies to a left luggage place. I could only feel sorry, as we left the park, when I saw the queue to retrieve their umbrellas at the end.

Still a great effort by the Bradford Council. Here’s hoping for an equally brilliant festival weekend next year – but hopefully with more adequate bars.

Alan Milburn who is stepping down from Parliament at the next election recently completed and published his review into Social Mobility.

A key point made in this review is that parental attitude to learning plays a far greater role in determining a child’s success than the financial position of the parents.

Matthew Taylor has written a good post this week on this subject. He concludes that ‘It would be better both for schools and for wider society if middle class parents put less energy in trying to get into ‘good’ schools and more in supporting their children and being active parents in more socially mixed schools.’ He rightly argues that it would be better for society if the middle classes ‘risked’ their child’s guaranted achievement by sending them to a mixed school, ensuring that children from all walks of life can grow together. This would break down barriers between classes, end undue and unfair animosity and stop the land grab near ‘good schools’ by the middle classes.

I would like to add to this, that while i believe we will only reach the aim of all schools being good schools, when all parents from all walks of life engage them, rather ensuring that some schools fall into a vicious circle of decline and others into a likewise reinforcing cycle of improvement. I also believe that to achieve this utopia, we need to begin to end the other bastion of middle class privelege and protection – the private school system.

What argument is there for their continuance, other than that put forward by its former pupils, that the private system produces our best and brightest. I would argue that it does so at a greater cost to society as a whole.

Private schools surely allow upper (upper) middle class families to pay for the guarantee that their kids will succeed in life? It also allows them to exempt themselves from the need to actively engage themselves in their child’s education at home or in school, and such for themselves or their children to ever fully engage in society.

Old Wine in a New Bottle? What is nanoscience? Is it different from nanotechnology? Is it chemistry?

Old Wine in a New Bottle?

What is nanoscience? Is it different from nanotechnology? Is it chemistry? Many chemists do think that nanoscience is another word for molecular chemistry. However, there are many who would argue with that definition (including the physicists, mechanical engineers, chemical engineers, bioengineers working in nanotechnology). Is molecular physics also nanoscience?

Though my own effort to understand nano science and technology over the last couple of years (as a journalist) and more so, after deciding to start the magazine, from last six months, has been that it is the same old science that Democritus, Rutherford, Rustom Roy, Milburn, etc have been talking about.

Hence I have been toying on the idea whether to ask this question or not… but after seeing the response that people have showered upon us for the blog, I assume I will get the answer!!!!

Best part that nano has brought in is that the youngsters think it is the most happening science and they are ready to show keen interest in this rather than “boring” chemistry and physics. By facing this happening tag to our good old science we are able to attract more kids to seriously take up nanotechnology!

What difference does the name make? Do kids seek out nano-related activities over more traditionally named activities? Or is this just rebranding of the same old science or is it something new? Can we make nanoscience something different?

If anyone has better way to explain nanotechnology please let me know. It would be of great help to understand….

With The Meat Eating Orchids…

The Meat Eating Orchids are an English rock band notable for producing a musical hybrid of 60’s pop and a brash alternative rock sound. Formed by founding members Matt Gogarty (Vocals), Sam Pickett (Vocals, Guitar) and Stuart Boyde
(Bass).

“Meat Eating Orchids forgive no one just yet…”
The Band takes their name from a line of the song Heart-Shaped Box by Nirvana. A reminder of a less harmonious past between members. After a long and fruitless search for the right drummer, while writing songs, the band were joined last
minute by friend Christian Jeyes (Drums). After one practice the group went on to record their debut EP Meet The Meat Eating Orchids at Peak Studios with Producer Chris Hamilton in the English countryside…

Receiving an astounding reception among friends and family, the EP circulated wider and all but sold out the initial hundred copies of ‘Meet The Meat Eating Orchids’ EP.This led to a couple of invitations to appear on local radio stations
and an offer to play Surface Festival Unsigned 09. With this the band took their first tentative steps onto the live music scene…

They are: Richard Scruton, of Rich Pickings fame, well-known on the local folk and blues scene and an authentic interpreter of the guitar picking of the great Delta bluesmen, and Stuart Cumberpatch, who has been playing lap style and bottleneck blues on National guitars for most of the last 20 years – ten of them with the legendary Kennet Sheiks. The duo occasionally expands to a sextet with added double bass, mandolin, violin and jug!

From the Houston Press: It was a little before 8 at night when the breaker went out at Emily Milburn

From the Houston Press:

It was a little before 8 at night when the breaker went out at Emily Milburn’s home in Galveston. She was busy preparing her children for school the next day, so she asked her 12-year-old daughter, Dymond, to pop outside and turn the switch back on.

As Dymond headed toward the breaker, a blue van drove up and three men jumped out rushing toward her. One of them grabbed her saying, “You’re a prostitute. You’re coming with me.”

Dymond grabbed onto a tree and started screaming, “Daddy, Daddy, Daddy.” One of the men covered her mouth. Two of the men beat her about the face and throat.

How do you think this news story will end? There’s no way it will end well, but there’s a twist to this story.

As it turned out, the three men were plain-clothed Galveston police officers who had been called to the area regarding three white prostitutes soliciting a white man and a black drug dealer.

Dymond is black. She was hospitalized due to the injuries she sustained from the officers’ attack.

So how does the Galveston police department respond to this attempted kidnapping of a child at her own home? Well, to start, they went to Dymond’s school and publicly arrested her for assault three weeks later. From when she fought back against her kidnappers. They arrested her father, too. For when he fended off the three men with a van who tried to abduct his daughter. Then they decided to take her and her father to trial for their “crimes”. The trial is currently set for February.

The Milburn family is suing.

The officers’ lawyer says: “The city has investigated the matter and found that the conduct of the police officers was appropriate under the circumstances.”

Don’t you just want to slam your head into a wall sometimes? I don’t have words to describe the egregiousness of this crime against the Milburn family. Their most basic human rights have been abused, and when that abuse was pointed out, those in authority responded by compounding the abuse instead of making amends. This is the stuff of nightmares. How will the Milburns and their community ever trust the police again?

Via Alas, a blog.
