John McLaughlin, guitar; Billy Cobham, drums; Miles, trumpet; Michael Henderson, bass; Herbie Hancock, Farfisa organ; Steve Grossman, soprano sax.

So spontaneous and carefree. Listen to where guitarist John McLaughlin is AT on this track, and wish you were there too.

A couple minutes in, Miles must’ve yelled at McLaughlin, “Go to B-flat!,” because McLaughlin suddenly goes to that key (the rest of the song was in E), while bassist Michael Henderson is slow to catch on. It results in some really weird-sounding, tritone music for a few measures.

Also, if you are fanatical about this stuff (like me), you should pick up the Complete Jack Johnson Sessions. These “complete” box sets are often hit-and-miss, but this one is the best of the bunch. Chances are, if in fact you are as fanatical about this stuff as I am, you already own it. If not, i’d be happy to hook you up.

Next stop: the Complete On The Corner Sessions (1973) … OOOOHHHHH.

Be SURE to listen to this interview with drummer Billy Cobham about this session:

At a jazz history seminar in college, my professor worked his way through the canon of standards and artists. From ragtime and stride piano, all the way through bebop and the “cool” period and beyond. But it was Miles Davis’s 1970 release Bitches Brew that drew the most controversy of all.

A bearded man in his 50’s felt, confidently, that this album is full of noise, not music. He dismissed it as indulgent and pretentious. Some other students agreed to some degree, while others defended the work as a stroke of genius and a pioneering leap in the history of jazz, influencing countless other musicians.

Regardless of opinion, Bitches Brew was one of Miles Davis’s best-selling albums. From Wikipedia:

“Upon release, it received a mixed response, due to the album’s unconventional style and revolutionary sound. Later, Bitches Brew gained recognition as one of jazz’s greatest albums and a progenitor of the jazz rock genre, as well as a major influence on rock and funk musicians.”

My contribution to the jazz seminar discussion was this: an album like Bitches Brew requires a certain level of trust from the listener. When a popular musician releases a different, challenging album, it usually shakes things up. The album may merely be a self-indulgent experiment and a mess of sounds with meandering concepts. But the thing that will bring you past the first-listen opinion of “I don’t get it” to the fifth or sixth listen of “now it makes sense,” is trust.

You need to trust that the musician you loved before did not lose his mind and go off the deep end. You need to trust that his good taste and insight you loved before is present in the new release as well. You need to trust that the album does, in fact, make sense and that it will reward repeated listenings. If you don’t trust the artist, and have good reason to believe there is no sense beneath the experimentation, then the first listen will likely be enough and you can dismiss at will.

The point is this: if you trust the artist, then make an effort before drawing a conclusion.

It’s the first time in many years that I have a CD by Najee that I want to listen to! I mean like take off the shelf and play it. Not since ‘just an illusion’ has that happened. I felt that many of his subsequent releases, they all settled on some dull formula that was devoid of personality. Not only is “Mind over Matter” smooth, and laid back but also ‘human’ (I really don’t know what that means- but think about something that’s free of all pretences and authentic- and you are closer to the definition). Soft to the ear and kind to the soul, with a diversity of voices that bring colour to his musical palette. Guest voices feature some of my favourite musicians, but it’s not overdone either. The track I’m listening to for example is a slow melody, a duet between the piano and the sax with a nostalgic flavour, with a mellow percussion as a foundation. If I was naming it, I would probably call it ‘a prayer for my baby’ or something like that. It happens to be my favourite track on the CD and it’s called The Journey. Each of the tracks get the same distinction of acquiring a personality. As another reviewer has commented “Sometimes the planets line up and the right groove emerges on its own, and all anyone needs to do – musicians and listeners alike – is get on board and ride into a realm of limitless possibilities.”- It seems this happened for this CD- perhaps where the name of the CD came from. The album title, says Najee, is inspired by Miles Davis’ approach to songwriting, especially in the latter part of his career. “In his later years, he took a very loose and improvisational approach,” he says. “He would start with nothing more than a groove that Marcus Miller or some other member of his band would lay down. And from there he would just develop these melodies that were very simple but at the same time very compelling and very memorable. It was a creative process that bypassed the nuts and bolts of the song and just got right to the essence of it.”

I love this CD- a heady mix of smooth grooves (done right!), mellow tunes and down to earth artists just doing their thing! Definitely worth buying!

Jeremy Taylor masterfully covers the legend Miles Davis’s classic LP, “Kind of Blue”. He enlists a group of Jamaican Musicians and skillfully is able to manifest this great piece of work. However, weeks into the production Jeremy had passed away and no one could have imagined this fine piece of work would ever see the light of day – Never say never. This album is a very special LP. Crafted by the late Jeremy Taylor, “Reggae Interpretation Of |Kind Of Blue” represents a master mind at work. What makes this LP memorable are the newly covers of the tracks: “Blue In Green” & “So What”. The grittiness, the raw strings, and the arrangements manage to pull you in again and again.

MILES DAVIS Género: Jazz (Alton, EEUU, 1926 – Santa Mónica, EEUU, 1991) Es una de las figuras

MILES DAVIS

RAY CHARLES

Géneros: Jazz, Soul, Gospel, Blues

(Georgia, EEUU, 1930 – Beverlly Hills, 2004)

ISAAC HAYES

Géneros: Soul, funk, R&B, Disco.

(Tennessee, EEUU, 1942 — Memphis EEUU, 2008)

Apenas me quedan inquietudes.
