Mindez Liam Pretty Green című ruhamárkájának indító buliján történt – ahol egyébként megjelent többek közt Richard Ashcroft, a Kasabian és Liam Howlett a Prodigy-ből, és ahol persze nem jelent meg Liam bátyja, Noel. Az információ, egyébiránt, a brit Sun bulvárlap közvetítésével látott napvilágot. „Liam nagyon átszellemültnek tűnt. Úgy festett, mint aki éppen meggyőzni próbálja a másikat.” – így a hír közelebbről meg nem nevezett forrása.

THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS

Alors je sais pas vous, mais moi, je trouve qu’ils ont des gueules d’ado à peine post-pubères, tout droit sortis du lycée – quand j’étais assistante de français en Ecosse, j’avais les mêmes dans mes classes de Terminale.

A gauche, c’est Alex Turner. 23 ans. Chanteur et guitariste des Arctic Monkeys, vous savez, ce groupe indie venu tout droit de Sheffield, aux textes vitriolés et aux rythmes syncopés. A droite, c’est Miles Kane, 23 ans lui aussi, chanteur et guitariste des Rascals, un groupe formé dont le premier album est sorti en 2008, et qui n’a pas encore acquis la notoriété des Arctic Monkeys.

De cette association très probable, puisque les deux garçons partagent un univers musical très semblable, est né le groupe The Last Shadow Puppets. Un album à ce jour : The Age of the Understatement, sorti le 21 avril 2008. Aussitôt sorti au Royaume-Uni, aussitôt propulsé au premier rang des meilleures ventes. Ils n’ont pas gagné le Mercury Prize cette année-là – et vous en connaissez la raison si vous suivez !

Mais fi de faits – cet album est un rare bijou, et je m’en vais vous démontrer pourquoi.

Pour commencer, une pochette très glam, très chic, très classe, très fifties avec cette Brigitte Bardot en herbe qui rajuste ses bas en noir et blanc, la bouche entrouverte pour mieux fredonner les mélodies de The Age of the Understatement… Une pochette à la fois rétro et diablement contemporaine, parce que c’est bien connu, le rétro revient à la mode. Et surtout, une pochette très sexy…

12 pistes… délicieusement rétro, comme le laissait présager la couverture. La première chanson, The Age of the Understatement, nous entraîne sur des arrangements qui rappellent les meilleurs thèmes de James Bond – et le clip, avec ses élans soviétiques, accentue cette filiation revendiquée. Et si ces deux garçons n’ont pas le sens du rythme, je ne m’appelle plus Lib.

L’ensemble de l’album se déploie sur ces thèmes rétro, ces rythmes qui rappellent tour à tour les westerns, les James Bond… ou des petites ballades, du type The Time Has Come Again ou Meeting Place, et surtout, le magnifique My Mistakes Were Made For you (qui ouvre ce billet). Gainsbourg rencontre les Arctic Monkeys, et c’est magnifique.

Car si les accents rétro de cet album sont indéniables et revendiqués, la musique de Turner et Kane n’en reste pas moins résolument moderne. Parce que le timbre de voix des deux garçons a cette juvénilité qui donne un véritable coup de jeune aux thèmes fifties de leurs composition.Ou comment faire du génialement neuf avec du vieux.

Et en bonus, parce que c’est vous… The Last Shadow Puppets reprennent SOS de Rihanna. Si si.

Tinha um tempo em que eu não entendia o frisson em cima do Arctic Monkeys. Nunca tinha escutado e não queria também, porque eu não tenho paciência para modinhas e frisson… Para mim, essa coisa de lamber o chão que uma banda pisa só pode significar uma coisa: rostinhos bonitos, música ruim e adolescentes histéricas. Tá aí o Nx Zero e outras da mesma safra que não me deixam mentir.

Mas Arctic Monkeys faz parte das bandas que vieram pós-The Strokes , como The Libertines, The Futureheads e Franz Ferdinand e então, porque eu estava tento aquela crise de underground louca e torcendo o nariz para o som deles?

Ouvi com atenção os discos da minha irmã Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not e fiquei apaixonada. Então dei uma chance para o Favourite Worst Nightmare e deixei a Brianstorm por último, porque tinha uma pirraça boba. Foi então que me rendi de vez ao som dos Macacos, que para mim, é muito melhor que The Strokes e Franz Ferdinand ou qualquer outra (Kings of Leon não faz parte desta lista).

Arctic Monkeys – Humbug

Agora, aguardo anciosamente o lançamento de Humbug, o terceiro álbum da banda e já tenho  Crynig Lightning e My Propeller como as minhas preferidas. Li no blog Ananas Metalliques, que na quinta-feira dia 30, eles transmitirão o CD inteiro ao vivo no site oficial da banda às 21 horas no horário de Londres o que significa às 18 por aqui.

Os macacos tem uma sonoridade muito peculiar. As músicas são bem trabalhadas e as letras são bem bacanas. O single Crying Lightning, que já tem clipe,  é incrível e embora o video não tenha agradado à muitos (tem até quem diga que este é o pior clipe da banda), na verdade não é assim tão mal. Achei legal e em um certo momento (depois de 2:30), Crying Lightning tem até um ar meio ” Can you feel it” dos Jackson 5 (homenagem ao MJ?).

“Humbug”, vazou! Oh! E quem não esperava isso acontecesse exatamente hoje?

Posso dizer que Humbug é tão bom quanto os anteriores. É um disco menos “descolado” e mais maduro. O som está mais pesado e trás uma pegadas folk em algumas faixas. Impossível não notar uma influência do projeto parelelo de Alex Turner com Miles Kane do The Rascals, o Last Shadow Puppets, principalmente nas faixas My Propeller e Secret Door. Destaque para Dangerous Animals e  Pretty Visitors, sem dúvida as melhores do álbum.

Com Humbug ouvimos um Arctic Monkeys que se desprende das raízes do indie rock britanico e tenta aproximar-se de um rock n’ roll mais clássico e puro.

‘My Mistakes Were Made For You’ was written by Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys and Miles Kane of The Rascals, who together form The Last Shadow Puppets.  The two wanted to start a small side project but ended up releasing an album, The Age of Understatement in April of 2008. They have been noted as taking inspiration from early Bowie and Scott Walker.

Too bad the place where I live (just left of hell ) is devoid of any foreign music, or should I say it would be very difficult for me to find a copy. Also, half of the sweetness of this band and the Artic Monkeys comes from Alex Turner’s voice.

Sorry for the late post. I took a rather spur-of-the-moment (at least for me who plans obsessively) trip into the past to Youngstown, Ohio to visit old friends. Good to get away from here and very nice to connect with that part of my life. I was also played tons of good music so future music posts may actually have songs that could be called “new”!

Today though I wanted to share this one because its sound and look are so polished. I appreciate ultimately they are kind of ripping off past artists but since they’re ripping off a style I really like, I forgive them. The band is The Last Shadow Puppets made up of from Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys and Miles Kane from the Rascals. This song was released almost exactly one year ago. They were Ivor Novello Award nominees this spring.

Although I feel old and creepy saying it, they are quite sexy, aren’t they?

in honor of the new arctic monkeys album, which will be out august 24th- uk 0r 25th- u.s., here is a video from the last shadow puppets which consists of alex turner of arctic monkeys and miles kane of the rascals.

Sheffield band Arctic Monkeys are expected to release the follow up album to 2007’s ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’ on August 24th in the UK, following the opening release in Japan on August 19th. It will be released in the USA 25th August. The album is currently unnamed.

Early previews of the album suggest that it is a departure from the style of the band’s first two albums, with a prevailing influence from lead singer Alex Turner’s side-project The Last Shadow Puppets ( Turner and Miles Kane from The Rascals) – the same “laconic croon” has been adopted by the whole band, “injecting the Arctics with a new sound that sends them onto wild soundscaping adventures”.

Recording began towards the end of summer 2008, with lead singer Alex Turner suggesting that the inspiration for the first few guitar riffs came while the band were attending the Latitude Festival in Suffolk. Tracks were written through the end of 2008, with recording taking place around the band’s touring schedule towards late 2008 and early 2009. The album was finally recorded in New York City, Los Angeles and the Mojave Desert.

The band themselves suggested that the album would be “full-on”, with tracks influenced by Black Sabbath. On ClashMusic.com, Alex Turner revealed that the band had listened to Jimi Hendrix and Cream while writing the new album.

The album has been described as has having a “carnival-esque atmosphere”, but it is described as a “spooky and ethereal trip, a lysergic cavalcade that haunts every track”. If the track titles are anything to go by, then this information is definitely plausible.

Arctic Monkeys. Un fort accent british comme on les aime et des riffs à la guitare à tout défoncer, que demande le peuple?

Alex Turner s’énerve avec son micro, Matt Helders marque le coup en percussions et on se demande bien comment les cordes de guitare tiennent le choc.
Les titres transportent à l’arrière d’une rue sombre d’une quelconque métropole, s’attardent sur les silhouettes restées dans l’ombre et s’immiscent par la porte entrouverte d’un bar clandestin…

God, ce que ça fait du bien de voir d’aussi bons groupes dans les charts.

The Last Shadow Puppets. Et si on essayait de rester dans l’excellence en changeant un peu de registre?

Alex Turner et son pote Miles Kane des Rascals s’abritent dans une grange qui leur servira de studio et en ressortent avec dans leurs valises une grande claque pour le monde du rock contemporain et l’un des meilleurs albums de l’année 2008.

C’est beaucoup plus élégant et moins enragé que les morceaux des Arctic Monkeys. Un espèce de blues/rock lyrique et enflammé. Je n’aurai jamais cru dire ça un jour mais c’est peut être encore mieux que le Nutella : à avaler directement au pot sans craindre l’indigestion ou les kilos en trop.

Suma a Alex Turner de los Arctic Monkeys y a Miles Kane de The Rascals y tendrán un grupo llamado The Last Shadow Puppets. Aquí, la canción  Standing next to me.

Miles Kane, el “otro” de The Last Shadow Puppets, ha asegurado que grabarán un segundo disco, pero no será pronto. Por ahora quiere centrarse en el segundo álbum de su banda original (The Rascals). Se ha de tener en cuenta que Alex Turner y Arctic Monkeys están en plena grabación de su tercer largo.

La cosa no acaba aquí, comenta que empezarán a trabajar en él a partir del próximo marzo y que les gustaría tener a Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals) como productor. Con ello pretenden introducir nuevos instrumentos y sonidos en sus grabaciones y prescindir en cierta medida de las guitarras.

Raise your hand if you heard of The Rascals before Miles Kane and Alex Turner joined the forces to form the retro-pop project of The Last Shadow Puppets. Did you?
No? Well, neither did I.

This is a band that has had luck, to be famous because of a side project of its leader, but also pays the price to its fame. People can’t look at them without linking Kane with Turner.

The two have been mates since Kane was in The Little Flames, its previous band.
They converged into The Last Shadow Puppets from very different positions.

Alex Turned has used the “Puppets” as a real side project. He gave Arctic Monkeys a much needed creative break after two years in the run and has enjoyed exploring different ideas instead of risking a quick third album. Clever.

Miles Kane situation is quite different. He is not the leader of the most successful English band. He is the leader of one of the thousands of “how-are-they?-OK” indie bands blossoming in the rainy midlands.
Forming a band with Turner means TV shows, interviews, festivals and gigs at the Apollo Hammersmith. What is, nowadays, quite an intimate venue for the Arctic Monkeys, is unthinkable (yet and for some time still) for The Rascals.

I quite like The Age of the Understatement album. It is not Arctic Monkeys, it is not The Rascals but there are 40 minutes of nice baroque-ness in those pop songs. Unquestionably, they both know how to write a good song and had a lot of fun being backed by a real orchestra.

The Rascals are a trio from the Wirral penynsula, the other side of the Mersey river from Liverpool. The three blokes emerged from The Little Flames ashes leaving Eva Petersen, the singer, attempting a solo career. They are still signed to Deltasonic, which carries on its pivotal attempt to keep the Liverpool scene alive.

This December tour was originally due last September and postponed for someone illness. There is a rock’n'roll mysterious virus. Tours’ cancellations due to health problems are very frequent; either the rock-stars do not have the “physique du role” to live through their wild life anymore, or the management’s trick to simulate sickness in order to hide poor ticket sales is recurrent. No speculations. Unfortunately, three months of additional tickets sale haven’t managed to fill the 850 capacity venue with more than 100 fans. Three bands, 8£, a budding pop-star and just hundred people. The recession is taking over the live scene.

Listening to The Rascals‘ songs, I understand the friendship. Miles Kane is so similar to Alex Turner in every aspect that you may see them as brothers.

The Rascals played 16 songs in about a hour. They introduced a nice new song that fuelled the rumour of a second album coming.
Musically (and unsurprisingly) they are more in the Arctic Monkeys space than the complicate arrangements of The Last Shadow Puppets.

Their music has the rumbling drum and bass that sustain the songs, the mounting guitars a-la I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor, there is a comparable way of singing and Kane has even a similar tone to Alex Turner.

I don’t think they copy the Arctic Monkeys, though. I think Turner is right saying that he and Miles Kane have very similar musical taste. This results in the two writing songs with very similar structure.
Turner said in an interview that if they were schoolmates, today Kane would be in the “Monkeys”.
Well, that would have been the best option, indeed.

Then there are the Beatles. As I wrote for the Zutons, if you are from Liverpool either you deny your past playing something totally unrelated or you must consider them.

When you are like-minded to the leader of a very successful band and come from the city of the most succesful of all time, it’s impossible to escape such influences. The remaining option is to take the best out of it.
It is possible to be influenced by a style, to emulate a technique, to reproduce a sound but one thing is not possible: to get someone’s else creativity. The inventiveness that generates a classic song cannot be taken out of someone’s mind.

This is where The Rascals music fails. They work hard and have fun but the melodic genius of Alex Turner or Lennon/McCartney appear once every generation.
Miles Kane can write good songs, but he has neither composed his Fake Tales of San Francisco nor Norwegian Wood .

He loves his guitar. Surrounded by a large set of pedal effects, he fabricates sound and noise, melody and feedback that excite the young fans who decide to dance squeezed on the first rows. They couldn’t crowd-surf too much empty space in the hall.

They play the album almost on its entirety, a couple of new songs which are as catchy as their best singles.
All that Jazz, a Echo and the Bunnymen cover reminds everyone that Liverpool is not only The Beatles. I’ll give you Symphaty and Is it Too Late? to please everyone, close the set. The small crowd is chanting and screaming their name loud, not enough to convince them to comeback for the encore.

With so many bands around; with the Arctic Monkeys third album being recorded with the help of the Queen of the Stone Age, Joshe Homme in his Desert studios; with the economic recession that is killing record sales and slowing down even the live scene; The Rascals will have to put their best effort into the second album to survive such a critical scenario.

I wish they do. Miles Kane is a nice and talented guy, he needs to pull out of the top hat a bunch of distinctive songs and a killer tune. Let’s hope his best mate gives him good suggestions. That’s what friendship is for, isn’t it?

Photo Tip

Photography needs light. There is no exception to this rule.
No light, no photos.

If you want to get a photograph, you need at least one luminous source to delineate the subject.
Now you have the answer if you were wondering what has happened to these photos. I had to play with photoshop to make some of them “ridiculously artistic” to decorate this article.

I know I am going to pass for another concert photographer complaining about bad lighting at gigs but I don’t care.
I appeal to bands, promoters, labels and whoever controls the music-biz and direct light technicians.

If you don’t want photographers to shoot your band, that is ok.
Just tell us: “Sorry, no photographers are allowed for this tour”. We will understand.

If you want us to leave our home, travel to the venue, take pictures of your band, come back home, post-editing the images and send to journals, please, provide us with some light.
We need it as much as you need electric power to plug band’s instruments.

We adapted to work with the annoying rule of “first three songs”.
Not ideal, but it’s ok. Ultimately you deprived rock fans to see photos of the best concert moments that mostly happen at the end of the shows when we have been kicked out of the pit, never at the beginning.

We bought expensive fast lenses and work with high ISO to accept that flash is disturbing the performers.
I talked to many professional musicians and all of them told me that they can’t be bothered by flash.
They don’t even notice it from the stage. Take a glance at the crowd of any gig and you will see tenths of flashes.
The ones who produce professional images to promote bands are penalised. Who takes low quality pictures and videos from the crowd to post them on flickr and youtube “walks free” with flashes being used throughout the entire set.

There is a limit to everything, though. We cannot work without lights, fact.
A camera working in the obscurity hasn’t been produced. It might be in the future but not yet.
I have been shooting hundreds of gigs this year and an increasing number have conditions not suitable to photography. Sometimes it is due to the poor venue resources, but most of the times it is the band choice.

Please, light up the stage! At least for the bloody first three songs, put in an additional front spotlight if you want your band to be published with some quality photo.

As an alternative, let us know in advance that the band decision is to play with lights not suitable for decent photography. We are quite happy to stay at home or opt for another gig.

Desde hace unos meses, en el reproductor de mi coche no suena otra cosa que no sea “The Age of The Understatement”. Es el primer álbum (espero que no sea el último), de la banda inglesa The Last Shadow Puppets. Esta banda formada por  Alex Turner ( Arctic Monkeys), y por Miles Kane (The Rascals), hace que surja la admiración (o envidia más corrosiva), de una forma instantánea nada más oir su lp de debut.
Alex Turner decía  en una entrevista que leí en un magazine de fin de semana que a su padre este proyecto le gustaba más que el que tiene con su afamada banda paralela, y es que lo que han conseguido hacer este par de “postadolescentes”, es cuando menos apto para casi todos los públicos. La producción de James Ford (Simiam Mobile Disco), es fantástica. A pesar de venir de una banda fundamentalmente electro, ha sacado un sonido años ‘60 a estos chavales muy elegante….
Me encanta el vídeo de su 2º single “Standing next to me”. Está dirigido por Richard Ayoade. Este actor y director británico refleja perfectamente en el vídeo el sabor retro que tienen las canciones de este dúo. Para mí, una canción redonda

We don’t always agree with Pitchfork’s album reviews- they regularly bash our favorite bands, but we also can’t stop reading them. Weird. Here’s a snippet of one they just did for the Last Shadow Puppets’ “My Mistakes Were Made For You” EP. People like us probably annoy the shit out of Miles Kane, but we love that the reviewer started with a lil’ Arctic Monkeys history sesh…

The Last Shadow Puppets

Bon un autre billet en si peu de temps (le dernier écart entre deux billets était de près de trois mois), wow. En fait, cette pratique me permet de faire asbstraction de mes présents travaux d’université… tout en conservant mon verbe à vif.

Depuis quelques mois, j’ai tenté à quelques reprises de jeter ici mes impressions sur The Age of the Understatement le premier album de The Last Shadow Puppets, projet parallèlle d’Alex Turner, des Arctic Monkeys, sorti en mai dernier. Malheureusement, toute tentative a été suivie d’une baisse d’inspiration rapide, ce malgré le fait que les dites chansons aient tourné régulièrement durant l’été 2008 sur mon iPod et à travers mon système de son Marantz.

Allié à Miles Kane de The Rascals, et anciennement de The Little Flames, Turner sort carrément du sentier tracé avec les Monkeys. Exit les petites guitares tranchantes et le petit indie-rock minimaliste. Les deux comparses partagent les guitares et les voix, qui se ressemblent à s’y méprendre en passant… J’ai oublié de dire qu’ils ont engagé un orchestre d’une vingtaine de musiciens pour l’occasion, sous la direction et les arrangements d’Owen Pallett, qui occupe la même fonction chez Arcade Fire, aussi connu pour son propre projet : Final Fantasy.

Réalisé par James Ford, le même qui avait produit Favourite Worst Nightmare, The Age of the Understatement est une très belle surprise en soi à mon avis. J’avais des doutes à l’abord lorsque j’ai entendu parler du projet la première fois. En effet, je suis toujours dubitatif lorsqu’un petit rocker affirme que son projet album sera enregistré avec un orchestre… j’ai sous-estimé Alex Turner. Bourré de talent, il se laisse aller avec Kane au jeu de la pop intelligente, à la sauce spectorienne si l’on veut. De plus, le son de guitare “mystérieux” qui avait été évoqué dans le dernier album des Monkeys est ici utilisé à très bon escient. Bref, du bonbon pour moi.

L’album démarre en vitesse avec le titre éponyme. Grandiose, on se laisse charmer rapidement… malgré le manque de présentations. On est convaincu dès lors du bienfait du projet. Puis, Standing next to you nous ramène directement dans la pop british des sixties, comme en fait foi son vidéoclip en fait. Sur Calm like you, les cuivres et l’orgue entrent en jeu, on varie. Avec Seperate but ever Deadly, on finit par se souvenir qu’un des camarades est un Monkeys, intéressante perspective.

Sur The Chamber, l’album prend une allure plus mystérieuse, plus douce. Mais on revient rapidement à quelque chose du plus tribal avec Only the Truth pour ensuite baisser la cadence sur My mistakes were made for you. Puis, Black Plant nous fait retomber dans une petite folie sixties, digne de la trame sonore d’un James Bond, version Sean Connery. Le mystérieux revient de l’avant avec I don’t like you anymore pour finalement se développer raidement avant la fin. La même ambiance continue avec un orgue, et plus de cordes, sur In my Room (sérieusement ce titre doit être revenu 50 fois dans l’histoire du pop-rock…).

Mais mon coup de coeur de l’album est sans contredit Meeting Place qui avant la fin de l’album nous présente un titre qui se développe en douceur et qui est bien poli par l’orchestre. Merveilleux, du bonbon. Puis la fin arrive avec The time has come again qui amène l’éternelle petite balade acoustique, Turner en solo. Bref, on est charmés et les attentes sont rencontrées. Que nous réserve Alex Turner en 2009 ? Sûrement un quatrième album en trois ans et demi, productif le gars… personnelement, je lui prédis un très bel avenir, sans équivoque.

Ondanks de stilte op deze blog, bent u nog niet van mij af. Nee inderdaad, onkruid vergaat niet. Zeer drukke dagen op het labo en een bezoek van mijn dierbaren hebben mijn blog wat in de kou laten staan, maar ik zal dat met de nodige warmte terug goed maken! Deze week stonden er twee concerten op het programma voor mij: op woensdag speelden de lichtjes fantastische Cold War Kids in Knust en gisterenavond was het de beurt aan The Rascals om de Kaiserkeller (Grosse Freiheit 7) onveilig te maken. All aboard the adventure!

Woensdag was toevallig of niet net mijn drukste dag op het labo. Op mijn ticket stond dat het concert van Cold War Kids begon om negen uur, al rekende ik er wel wat op dat er een voorprogramma was. Tot overmaat van ramp was ik m’n ticket op kot vergeten zodat ik niet rechtstreeks van het tropisch instituut naar Knust kon gaan (liggen beiden in Sankt-Pauli). Om kwart na negen heb ik mijn experimenten afgerond (was eigenlijk nog niet klaar, maar kom) en het boeltje daar afgesloten (was de laatste op de afdeling virologie), waarna ik een nieuw snelheidsrecord heb gevestigd in de wereldvermaarde klassieker Sankt-Pauli – Berliner Tor – Sankt-Pauli. Enkele tussenspurtjes en een creatief gebruikmaken van de verschillende, kruisende metrolijnen zorgden ervoor dat ik om tien uur stipt Knust binnenwandelde. Ik had mijn voet nog niet over de drempel gehesen, of Cold War Kids begonnen aan hun optreden. Die mannen stonden duidelijk te wachten op hun Belgische fan, enfin, beter getimed kon het eigenlijk niet zijn. Door mijn late aankomst stond ik wel helemaal achteraan, maar dat kon niet echt deren. Knust was immers niet meer dan een uit de kluiten gewassen, lichtjes groot uitgevallen café en de akoestiek was prima. Cold War Kids vielen meteen met de deur in huis met enkele knallende versies van Every Valley Is Not A Lake, We Used To Vacation, Mexican Dogs, Something Is Not Right With Me en Hang Me Up To Dry. De sound was geweldig (de CWK groove klonk overtuigender dan ooit) en zanger Nathan Willet was dan ook nog eens geweldig bij stem terwijl hij zijn piano teisterde (eat your heart out Keane!). De setting paste ook perfect bij een donkere band als Cold War Kids en maakte nog maar eens duidelijk wat een blunder het was van Chokri om deze band op een klaarlichte dag op de Main Stage te zetten voor een bende onverschillige Metallica fans. Na het overtuigende begin werd even gas teruggenomen om toch terug energiek te eindigen met Hospital Beds en een volledig losgeslagen versie van het op plaat al wervelende Saint John in de bis. Cold War Kids waren erin geslaagd mijn labo- en rushstress helemaal weg te spelen en stuurden mij met een voldaan gevoel richting bed. Van de drie keer dat ik deze band nu al live aan het werk zag, was dit absoluut de beste!

Cold War Kids

Vrijdag was er dan het optreden van The Rascals in de Kaiserkeller (de kelder van het grotere Grosse Freiheit 7, in een zijstraat van de Reeperbahn). De Kaiserkeller is samen met het ter zielen gegane Star Club één van de zaaltjes waar een jong stel Britten uit Liverpool begin de jaren zestig hun doorbraak zouden forceren. Ze noemden zichzelf the Beatles, de rest is wereldgeschiedenis. The Rascals is het Liverpools bandje (vandaar de keuze voor Kaiserkeller waarschijnlijk) van Miles Kane, ook wel bekend als de helft van the Last Shadow Puppets. Met the Last Shadow Puppets brachten Miles Kane en Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys) één van de beste (debuut)platen van het voorbije jaar uit en in de slipstream van die hype wist Miles Kane ook met z’n eigen bandje de aandacht te trekken. Op Pukkelpop speelden ze in het holst van de nacht een lekker smerige set in de Club die mij er meteen toe aanzette hun debuutplaat Rascalize in huis te halen. En dat heb ik me nog niet beklaagd: op de plaat wordt duidelijk dat het creatieve aandeel van Miles Kane in the Last Shadow Puppets misschien wel groter was dan dat van Alex Turner en dat Kane minstens even getalenteerd is als zijn veel beroemdere compagnon. The Rascals klinken als een donkerdere, smerigere versie van the Last Shadow Puppets waar de strijkers en het brede arrangement worden vervangen door prominentere gitaren. Het optreden dan. De Kaiserkeller bleek toch vooral een locatie van vergane glorie, echt keizerlijk was het alleszins niet. Stel je een derde van de Petrol voor met een lagere plafond: een echte kelder dus.. Tot overmaat van ramp was deze bescheiden locatie dan ook nog niet eens halfvol. Eerst was er nog een voorprogramma en dat luisterde naar de welluidende naam “Hot Club de Paris”. Het fenomeen voorprogramma kan men in twee categorieën indelen. Je hebt die categorie van tot dan toe onbekende bands die even goed/beter zijn dan de hoofdact zelf. Op die manier ontdekte ik bijvoorbeeld We Are Scientists in het voorprogramma van Editors, Guillemots op zijn beurt in het voorprogramma van We Are Scientists en St. Vincent voor Sufjan Stevens. Daarnaast zijn er die voorprogramma’s waarbij je al na vijf minuten op je klok kijkt en afvraagt wanneer de hoofdact gaat overnemen. Hot Club de Paris behoort tot die tweede categorie. De lads deden echt wel hun best, waren zeer communicatief met het (bijna afwezige) publiek en hadden de pech dat ze uit hun lood werden geslagen door een kapotte versterker zeer vroeg in het optreden, maar hun songs waren gewoonweg niet interessant genoeg en hun sound was al evenmin boeiend. Ik was dan ook blij wanneer het optreden (dat tegen het einde aan bijna gênant werd met nul publieke respons) voorbij was. Ondertussen was duidelijk geworden dat er wel al wat meer volk was dan helemaal in het begin maar toch nog altijd maar een man of 100. En dan waren ze daar, wandelend tussen het publiek naar het podium (een apart gevoel geeft dat), Miles Kane en de zijnen. In tegenstelling tot Hot Club de Paris, lieten the Rascals zich niet intimideren door de weinig volgelopen zaal en probeerden ze gewoon een strakke set af te leveren. Ergens vreesde ik misschien een beetje voor een onverschillige Miles Kane (met the Last Shadow Puppets heeft hij er net een tournee opzitten voor veel grotere en bovendien volledig uitverkochte zalen) maar de jonge Brit (vier dagen jonger dan mezelf) had geen last van capsones en gaf gewoon het beste van zichzelf. Hetgeen het weinige publiek dat er was wel kon appreciëren, inclusief een groep heren uit Manchester waaraan de in een strakke leren vest getooide Kane Stockings To Suit opdroeg. Zowat alle nummers van de prima debuutplaat passeerden de revue met als uitschieters singles Freakbeat Phantom en I’ll Give You Sympathy, het poppy I’d Be Lying To You en het schitterende Fear Infected Into The Perfect Stranger (de oerkreet “It’s a whorehouse in here” kreeg nog wat meer overtuiging dankzij de locatie op enkele tientallen meters van de Reeperbahn..). Met Diamond Trip werd ook een nieuw nummer gespeeld en afsluiten deden ze met een uitgesponnen versie van Is It Too Late van de Out Of Dreams EP. Even snel als ze gekomen waren verdwenen The Rascals weer tussen het publiek, een vreemd fenomeen: terwijl het publiek nog aan het applaudisseren is met het gezicht naar het podium gericht, passeren de bandleden tussen het publiek door al handjes schuddend met de fans. Een relatief korte (kan ook niet anders met nog maar één album in de koffer) maar energieke set: meer moest dat niet zijn. Voor de geïnteresseerden: the Rascals spelen op dinsdag 2 december voor de luttele som van 10€ in Trix in Borgerhout en het zou wel eens de laatste keer kunnen zijn dat je de band in zo’n kleine locatie aan het werk ziet. Allen daarheen dus!
