In the previous posts, I showed that happiness is the honest signal natural selection uses to rank u

In the previous posts, I showed that happiness is the honest signal natural selection uses to rank us in the so called dominance structure. I mentioned two different types of structure. The dominance structure is based on happiness and its honest signal which is emitted and received almost unconsciously. On the contrary local, dominance hierarchies are based on tangible traits and conscious actions. They are indeed classical ethological dominance hierarchies in the sense that they use a social attribute that makes a dominant a winner beating the random odds in any combat (Jameson 1999). The social attribute is triggered consciously and can be seen by the group. It is explicit like a beak strike. It can be of any nature. I don’t even exclude artworks. Artists belong to multiple dominance hierarchies. As soon as you define the structure of dominance, then all activities that generate happiness are performed within local dominance hierarchies. It is not necessary that explicit competition occurs. It can be replaced by social approbation. The artist raison d’être is to be approved by his public. But in the same time, you can observe how these people like to be awarded in ceremony of all sorts. You have both competition and social approbation. That is, in the end, competition for social approbation.

Mind (Intelligence, expertise, strategic sense, capacity to anticipate or find shape in chaos,) and body (velocity, strength, grace, coordination,…) are the two main sources of social attributes which everybody use, or see others use, when they engage in interactions vis-à-vis the others or the environment. Local hierarchies establish themselves using set of consistent measure. Money can be a measure. But it is not the only one. It seems that it is very widespread nowadays though. All types of hierarchies emerge from this measurement: Despotic, linear or pyramidal. For example, the athletes compete against each other. A measure can be the performance achieved (time, won contests…) and you end up being classified in a linear type hierarchy.

It is worth noting that no one is shocked that there are dominants or winners. Lack of fairness in the evolution games does not lie in inequalities. It is rather cheaters who are resented. As long as the dominant is felt to deserve his rank, he doesn’t get rejected and goes on collecting happiness which elevates him in the dominance structure. Dear reader, you’re part of the game too. Your adaptation capability and your successes are key factors to build your happiness capital. Success triggers happiness which triggers success in a virtuous circle. This is reinforced by the social respect and approbation that usually follow success. Community is also a key factor in the dominance hierarchy.

In normal conditions, it is impossible to get higher rank in the dominance structure without any activities in the local dominance hierarchy. In other words, it is impossible to decide consciously to be happy. Local dominance hierarchies are pre-requisite of the pursuit of happiness. Natural selection has a big stake in them in the sense that they are the places where it occurs. A specific local dominance hierarchy regroups a set of activities that bring value in terms of adaptation. The more it is going to produce happiness, the more it is going to be crowded as you may imagine. You could even say that competition occurs between local dominance hierarchies. This is based on the happiness they can generate.

One fact is extremely specific to humans. They have invented an incredible variety of local dominance hierarchy. Animals are boring: they fight themselves one way or the other. It is not that absurd in the sense that the fittest is also the one capable of grabbing more resources, so you need a little bit of cleverness here. But humans’ model of dominance is much more efficient as it is based on happiness. This complex indicator is the ultimate progress on ritualization as it collects all adaptation related data in order to confront it peacefully with the happiness of others. In some animal species, females do not select the dominant male. Scientists derive they take into account other parameters than strength. Indeed, they consider aptitudes like raising the offspring for example. Another explanation could be that there is another hierarchy, a hidden one, based on honest signal we don’t know about which would build a dominance structure. The signals (behaviors, honest signal, colors…) would provide additional information to the female in their mating partner selection process. After all, a combat ritual is a signal. It builds dominance hierarchy.

Wherever humans get measured, there is a local dominance hierarchy. Even more complex human structures compete against each other. Market is to be understood as a competition between various hierarchical structures such as profession, power. It is meant to provide a competition framework where product are sold and bought. All participants in this complex dominance hierarchy are measured against money. Money is interesting as it provides a sort of model of happiness allocation within the overall dominance structure. However this dominance indicator is degraded and dishonest from an ethologic perspective, not in moral terms. However, money distribution is certainly an acceptable model of happiness allocation however degraded it is. It is certainly not the ultimate panacea because human beings engage in other relationships in the dominance structure. They are not all based on money and they provide indeed happiness. That’s fortunate.

However, one way or the other, Money determines a rank a in the social organization, whether you like it or not, actually. Women pay attention to this indicator because they, more or less, unconsciously anticipate the resources that man will be able to provide in order to guarantee the education and the well-being of their offspring. I don’t think there is a reason to blame them for that. It is a child oriented, altruistic behavior. Money is the most fascinating criteria because, exactly like happiness, it is cross local dominance hierarchy. Ideally money based social organization should resemble the happiness based dominance structure. That’s not the case and we’ll discuss this in the next posts.

The old adage suggests that money can’t buy happiness. This is not entirely true because scientific study tends to prove that income increase for the poor improve their level of happiness. However, past a certain threshold, money will fail to provide an additional increase in happiness. There is a relationship between money and happiness however, at a certain level, it is broken and happiness declares its independence. Thus the higher the happiness is, the less money is reliable as a dominance indicator. I do not imply that there is no relationship. I only state that the indicator is not honest. You can win the lottery, you can inherit, you can be lucky. You can sit on top of dominance hierarchy but you cheated on yourself, you were not meant for it and become sad.

We throw our own fear of deprivation on the poorest. Even if it is difficult for them, we should not deny them the capacity to be happy. It is maybe what is called respect and dignity of the human being. They even could be our rivals in the dominance structure. This is the sheer power of happiness and its honest signal in so far all components necessary for adaptation are included in one universal synthetic indicator that can be then compared irrespective of where you come from and what you do to survive. Some components are prescribed by the culture. It is likely that what makes the others happy will make you also happy. However, you need to be careful and decide what makes you really happy. This choice is not easy in a society that makes us believe that money is the only way to buy happiness. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not here to blame anybody because they like things. If it brings you happiness, so be it. I think though that there are thrifty ways to be happy, really happy and not dependent on money.

I’ve elaborated a lot on the dominance structure based on happiness as opposed to local dominance hierarchies based on all other criteria like body and mind, culture (social organization inherited from history) and tangible assets(money, expensive clothes and cars…). Dominance structure is… a structure and not a hierarchy with a fixed top and base. It was maybe so in Pleistocene where primitive tribes were made up of 150 members. Civilization has turned hierarchy into a structure. The dominance structure is difficult to see because it always changing exactly like our moods. However scientist did spot it involuntarily. Science apparently does not know yet that happiness needs to be construed in an evolutionary dominance model. Happiness can be compared to the subterranean river found under the Amazon. You can’t see it, but it moves slowly under the powerful Amazon River. Let’s have a look at the dominance structure of the Homo sapiens!

In 2008, a scientific study attracted a lot of media attention and spurred numerous comments. It demonstrated that happiness was contagious and depended on the others. Conclusion was drawn that joy was a collective phenomenon. I don’t really understand the collective conclusion very well. Happiness is not an emerging attributes of the community. Only individuals feel it. The fact that it propagates itself isn’t a proof that community creates it. An emerging attribute is a property created at a higher level of organization. Organization creates the attribute. For example, mind is considered as an emerging activity of the billions of neurons of the brain. That is, if you are a monist. So is happiness a collective or an individual phenomenon? In any case, and this is not innocent, it reminds me of the scientific debate over dominance that I presented in a previous post. The same questions were raised as regard to dominance. This is no coincidence because we’re talking about the same phenomenon.

Source : Henri Roussel, “La valeur biologique de l’organisation sociale en hiérarchie de dominance chez l’animal”. Les cahiers psychologie politique. Numéro 4, décembre 2003.
These conceptions consider that dominance is a kind of individual attribute. Others, still focusing on agonistic behaviors, maintain that dominance is a relative measure, an attribute of dyadic encounters rather than an individual attribute. Among these definitions, it is stated that dominance hierarchy is shaped on the basis of a social dynamic process. The “Winner/Loser conditional effect” is used to describe evolution of dyadic encounters as a function of the previous one.

So, is happiness collective or individual? To me, choosing one camp over the other is not mandatory. According to my theory, we selfishly accumulate happiness in the local dominance hierarchy and we propagate it in the community (dominance structure) through social interactions. Social interactions in humans and combat in animals share the same phylogeny. This means that they share the same behavioral ancestor. Social interactions are the combats that occur in the dominance structure. Dominance structure must exist in other species because it is the centrifugal glue that opposes the centripetal action of agonistic fights in the hierarchies. The animal must be pushed to agonistic behavior in some kind of way. It expects a reward.

I’m perfectly in line with the scientists in defining happiness the way I did. If an individual is dominant in the dominance structure, then he transfers happiness to the others who get dependent on him like a drug. I won’t deny that I read this study with the sunglasses of my theory.

Source: Dynamic spread of happiness in a large social network: longitudinal analysis over 20 years in the Framingham Heart Study (James H Fowler, associate professor, Nicholas A Christakis, professor – BMJ 2008;337:a2338 doi:10.1136/bmj.a2338.)

In the introduction, the authors present their objectives and make a mistake re the dominance theory. It is a slight one which will be corrected as soon as my simple theory spreads all over the world (one day). Their objectives are to “evaluate whether happiness can spread from person to person and whether niches of happiness form within social networks”. I don’t oppose the propagation but I slightly disagree with the form of the second proposal. Fowler and Christakis consider social network as a framework where happiness can blossom. They are not aware that in fact, happiness not only propagates itself across social network, it creates it. It is like looking at bacteria and the atmosphere. Bacteria seem to live their life in the atmosphere. At some point, in the evolution of earth, bacteria chemistry created the atmosphere. It is the same with happiness and social network. It does not form within social networks, it creates it. Social networks do not appear using the magic wand of a holy ghost. There need to be a structuring force that glues the individuals together into the dominance structure (social network).

Thus the introduction needs to be corrected. The objectives are to evaluate whether happiness can spread from person to person and whether happiness creates the social network”. It is a significant nuance. However, without this correction, the study is more of a description than an explanation. I think it its ambition. It significantly supports my theory which just adds a dominance rationale behind it. Of course, other factors should not be excluded. Social networks are also built on family ties (selfish genes) and are also dependent on social and geographical conditions. I just want to point out a process that exerts its significant power everything else being equal.

I’m not going to spend too much time analyzing details of this study because it raises theoretical questions I will address later. All I wanted to show in this post is that the dominance structure is not a concept; it is a tangible reality that can be observed. The study followed up people during 20 years. Their level of happiness was estimated. This led the scientists to establish correlations between level of happiness and the people proximity in the networks (Family, friends, neighbors, colleagues). Among the conclusions lies the fact that “people who are surrounded by many happy people and those who are central in the network are more likely to become happy in the future”. This could also show that choosing your friends could be a rational decision based on happiness. You never thought about it? Maybe this is because, some part of your brain does it for you and you don’t know anything about it.

Let’s imagine that 100 people are regrouped in a warehouse, everything being equal (social class, education…), some people will have a tendency to establish relationships with some others. Friend selection would be just chance? I don’t think so. The experiment would be amusing. A happiness questionnaire would establish the level of happiness and then we would see how the social network would construct itself. Normally, correlation between happiness and the established relationship would appear. It would like observing magnetic fields and iron fillings.

Who is dominance and who is submissive in the big happiness game? It is difficult to tell because happiness or dominance is difficult to evaluate in a normal interaction (filling up questionnaire is not a normal interaction). Only the limbic system can derive the values from the honest signal. No need to say that the limbic system is beyond conscious control. To detect a dominant, you need maybe to ask the women, they know. Also there is an asymmetrical relationship. The submissive is attracted by the dominant. The dominant must be central in the dominance hierarchy. He creates happiness from local dominance hierarchy and propagates it. He’s a source. We will disclose a massive dominant source in the next posts.

Let’s go back to the Framigham study. Happy or less happy egos (“individual”) distribute themselves across clusters. They pair themselves in a way that evokes an absence of coincidence. The dominance structure based on the happiness honest signal is displayed below, just for your eyes. Pyramidal hierarchies have given way to complex structure during the evolution process where relationships were more and more regulated through the level of happiness. I think it is a very intuitive concept. Did you really think that happiness was such an innocent feeling. It is not. Evolution is rarely innocent.

Why would you follow someone who’s sad? Why imitating him if he’s not fit ? A leader must have this special thing; this special thing is the happiness honest signaling. Evolution is not stupid. Violent confrontations do have a cost in terms of survival (wounds, time spent to fight is not spent to collect resources…). With happiness, dominance becomes flexible, portable and real time. Adaptation is cumulated in it and is displayed to the group through it. What a major breakthrough for evolution! The archaic form of dominance (violence and fear) is the exactly the opposite of the modern form (happiness). Wars, murders are not exactly good for happiness. We have both forms in us. Let’s hope we’ll get rid of our old penchant.

Each node represents an ego. Female ego are circle, Male ego are square. The lines in between the shapes are the type of relation (black for siblings, red for spouse and friends). The color represents the level of happiness. Blue and bluish are the less happy whereas green and greenish are the happiest (Yellow are somewhat intermediate)

In the previous posts, I demonstrated how happiness could be effectively considered as the main current evolution criterion which decides your fate in the natural selection game and your access to sex. It is the foundation of the dominance structure (criterion: happiness) which sit on the top of all dominance hierarchies (criteria: strength, intelligence, velocity, anticipation…). The structure of dominance is subterranean. It crosses social classes and local dominance hierarchy. It is our common house as Homo sapiens. It is theoretically not gender dependent for men and women are both (obviously) capable of happiness. Sorry for the machos, female can be dominant. Isn’t that good news? I can’t elaborate the way dominance is expressed in woman. Some aspect must be identical, some other ones slightly different. As I mentioned earlier, gender based expression of dominance is a statistical signature. Woman is more likely to have this dominance behavior than men. In any case, in a next post I will disclose what the main dominant behavior is, valid and unique for man and woman. But you’re not ready yet. We need some posts from here.

I already mentioned this theoretical issue: how can women detect happiness? Joy is an internal psychological state. So it needs to be expressed for the outside world. Telepathy is not my cup of tea. Dominance is indicated by happiness. Thus a transmission belt is needed to translate joy into a dominance structure. In ethology, there is a concept that can help us demonstrating the existence of this transmission belt.

Source : Fabien Génin, PhD in biology of behavior (translated)
Honest signal / dishonest signal : in sexual selection, a signal is said honest if it effectively provides correct information to the females regarding the capacities of the male (for example, vivid colors can be associated with good resistance against parasite). If it is dishonest, it is linked with no aptitude.

The signal is honest only if it is beyond the sexual drive control otherwise all males could get access to reproduction. This is against natural selection principle. An honest signal can be emitted from a DNA dependent dominance trait (relative size, physical beauty). No male can manipulate his DNA so it fits the constraint. What about the happiness dominant trait? First of all, we need to discuss whether happiness is a conscious state. Yes and no. It is conscious in the sense that you feel happy. But you cannot know whether you are happier than the other. If you are bipolar you exactly know what happiness is. Turn the “volume knob” and you will see it swaying from melancholy to almightiness. Have you noticed how it is funny how people engage in a rat race to look happier than the others? It looks like a dominance structure to me. Let’s assume, we don’t need to be precise here, that happiness is conscious. But you cannot decide directly to be happy. You need the others or a local dominance hierarchy to achieve your joy goal. Things are not that simple. But something very simple needs to be said once again: The individual should not be in an evolution position to interfere with the honest signal. The process is a three steps process. You’re hopefully victorious in one of the local hierarchy dominance (or from the others, preferably dominant), this is converted into happiness which is then conveyed by the honest signal to the outside world. If you control the honest signal, then no need to struggle for life. What an intolerable thought for evolution!

The main problem lies in the existence of this honest signal. I haven’t seen it studied in evolutionary literature. It must be extremely subtle. It is also variable as it is supposed to reflect a varying state of happy consciousness. I asserted that a manic episode is caused by an excess of dominance that massively amplifies your very self. Everything gets amplified. In the middle of all these amplified functions, is there one that is usually so discreet that it is overlooked? The reason is yes. At normodominance (euthymia), it is drowned among the visible dominance trait. However, here, it is also effective, remember that all natural selection needs is a slight skew. When the manic amplifier turns a 60W lamp into a 10 000 watts flashing spotlight, your hypersexuality will have at least a cause and an effect: My name is Bond, Transient Bond. Or Cinderella, before and after midnight.

The emergence of honest signals is the result of the everlasting armed race between males and females. Male always have a tendency (understatement) to deceive females on their actual aptitudes and females defend themselves against dominance usurpers. Happiness and its honest signal seem to be the best bet for female when selecting a sexual partner. Once again I don’t deny that other DNA dominant traits are not taken into account by females. Females try to derive happiness from a conscious observation of these traits. I’m not going to blame them to adore George Clooney. But they adore him because he’s an image of happiness which is an indicator of dominance. Consciously they infer happiness from physical traits while their limbic system has a direct unconscious “awareness” of the honest signal. Indeed the honest signal is transported largely across an unconscious end to end channel. If it was conscious, natural selection… I’ve already sung this song. You know it now. This is exactly what makes the honest signaling mysterious. It comes, it goes, you feel it but you don’t see it.

Happiness is how Nature knows that a dominant trait is indeed effective in the struggle for life. Natural selection is affective like human! And females know all from you at a glance if they listen to their desires. If you’re not handsome, that’s absolutely not the end the world. Find yourself an activity, like guitar for example, give the best of you and the rest will flow. Woman will then be attracted for what you are.

I cannot agree with Christophe André (French well-known) psychiatrist who says that happiness has no purpose. If it exists, and a bipolar can tell you that it exists, then it is useful from an evolution perspective. It is not only a reward. It is also your rank in the dominance structure. It also guides us to improve ourselves because it provides feedback on our last actions. The only question that matters in life is: Did my last achievements improve my state of happiness (and the size of my wallet, ok, point granted)?

My episode III is no longer mysterious. The source of my bewilderment stems from this disco night where 90% of women were staring at me. Why women did change their behaviors vis-à-vis me? How did they recognize my internal almightiness? The answer is very simple now. The regulative part of dominance had forced my usual slightly depressed state into an almighty feeling, skipping the normal happiness across the way. Almightiness is the overdominant form of happiness. Honest signaling has done its job of transmission belt of the internal feeling of happiness and turned myself into a super Casanova. It is not just eye contact. During my ups, women don’t hesitate to take the initiative. It is funny to observe especially when they’re 20. Girls, you’re twenty years late! I haven’t much to say to you. But I go on going to club from time to time just for my experimental study of behaviors and also to keep the conviction because my brain has a tendency to say: “no it cannot be that simple, it can’t be”.

When back home from this disco evening, I look to myself carefully. Was something special? The answer is no. Nothing was there to be detected. I look like the usual drunk shit after having gone over 5:00 pm. Let’s try to speculate. Elimination is a good approach. My clothes were ordinary. Only my hands and face were visible to the public. Hands are not really something that a women look at on the dance floor. So the usual suspect seems to be the face. Multiple study show that faces is involved in dominance. But they are DNA related (example: square jaws). Look is also involved in dominance. If you break eye contact you are submitted. Psychiatrists say that maniac have a sparkling look. I don’t know what this is worth in terms of scientific statement but in any case, the face seems to be the focus point for exchange of happiness related dominance information.

Source : Psychologie de la soumission et de la manipulation, submissiveness and manipulation psychology, Nicolas Guéguen
Visual contact could have the same function. Inference of others’ dominance rather than statutory (social) rank could be inferred from it. Dominance is specific dimension whereas status is multidimensional./…/. Results show that a staring experimenter is evaluated as more dominant than a quick glancing one. At the same time, the subject acknowledges that he perceive himself as less dominant when he’s stared at. For Thayer (1969), such repeated results (Argyle, Levevre and Cook, 1974) would confirm the animal model of dominance expression : the dominant has the privilege to look at the subordinate.

We know if a face is happy or sad. Do we know to which extent it influences us? Now you are going to be careful about your face. You should not because if you try that you will have two problems. First you will obtain a rictus, second this rictus is going to disappear and you know how woman like to observe us when we don’t know it!

To summarize, the maniac is biologically dominant while he’s socially unfit. The honest signaling of variable dominance (happiness) is pushed full steam high. Once again Dominance pushes the mind and the body over its limits. The honest signal is as amplified as the other functions. It is meant to rank us in the dominance structure. We will be able to see this dominance structure in the next post. I know: You can’t wait.

Damien Saez / Jeunesse lève-toi
Dis-moi qu’on brûle encore
Dis-moi que brûle encore cet espoir que tu tiens
Parce que tu n’en sais rien de la fougue et du feu
Que je vois dans tes yeux ?

(Tell me it gets burned again
Tell me this hope that you hold is still burning
Because you know nothing of the impetuosity and fire
that I see in your eyes?)

In animal, the dominance indicator (or the so called dominance KPI of the previous post) is different from the human one. For the sake of brevity, animals usually fight each other and the winner of all these combats is the dominant which get access to reproduction. Dominance, as a self-amplifier, is still there behind the scene. In animals, it expresses itself always in the same violent and aggressive way. In some species, effective violence is inhibited by complex instinctual processes called ritualization which is one of Konrad Lorenz favorite topic. The fight becomes more of a drama play than an actual fight. No blows are dealt only deterrent muscles are shown. It can be noted that aggressiveness and self-esteem seems to share the same phylogeny. The manic self-esteem sounds strangely the same as aggressiveness which is the animal way of asserting: I’m confident in myself and I will kick your ass to demonstrate just that. Females succumb to the most violent or aggressive individuals, that is, if they are in an evolutionary position to make a choice. Violent showdown and their result is the basis for calculation of the ranking males. For instance, every ethologist knows the famous “peck order” which shape the dominance hierarchy according to beak strike given and received. It is a confrontation indicator: the most aggressive wins provided he’s got the necessary DNA outfit to sustain it.

Human happiness is radically different. From evolution perspective, It is modern indicator in that it does not need an effective confrontation. You could argue that happiness (or elation) also exist in animal. However it is more a performance reward than an external indicator. Elation is more perceived as a reward in animals whereas, in humans, it indicates the way up to the subject AND also the dominance state vis-à-vis the community. I would like to stress that this reward/indicator thing is not black and white. Evolution never does thing abruptly. Let’s say that in human the emphasis has been more laid on the indicator side.

The synthetic feature of happiness is demonstrated by the vastness of its sources. It is still possible to be happy from being aggressive and violent. From a human perspective let’s call it a very stupid way to be happy. However other sources of happiness have appeared in so far the measurement of objective beak strike was not an obsession any more. Intelligence, creativity, craftsmanship, knowledge are combined capacities that can provide escape from danger, that can make resources collection more efficient and access to sex easier. If you package this into a synthetic indicator like happiness then natural selection is going to do a very much more efficient job. We can live happy (and by the way much more happy) without violence. Our civilizations do not reward violence anymore and we continue to be happy. This demonstrates that violence is outmoded in terms of evolution. You could argue that society promotes sport and violence in movies. However, to me, these are the more sophisticated ritualization of violence.

My daring theory is that happiness as a synthetic dominance indicator has permitted the emergence of intelligence. This has made the job easier for female to select the best sexual partner. Happiness is a good predictor of being able to bring resources necessary to raise child as well as the best evaluation of the rank in the dominance hierarchy. If they had gone on assessing the fight capacity of males, only the fittest for this activity would have been selected. It does not take a PhD to knock out your fellow community member. They trusted happiness in male as the best indicator of fitness. They could not detect upfront Intelligence as it did not exist. So happiness as a cumulative memory of victory against the environment has doubtless contributed to the human IQ increase among other things. Of course, the aggressiveness based dominance has not disappeared. Look at all this magazine that would like to make us look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. I don’t know if this is supposed to turn on women. Only she knows.

Intelligence is doubtless a result from happiness, understood as a dominance indicator, which allows women to select the best sexual partner. That is, to select the genes capable of spawning a dominant and happy subject. Our humanity expresses itself here: our ability to be selected on criteria which are not only aggressiveness based. The human dominance hierarchy seems to have banned violence from its root behavior. Other criteria are occupying the free space. Unfortunately, violence prevents other criteria from prevailing. It is the easiest way to get resources from the environment but the most expensive in terms of overall happiness depletion.

There’s no point in being naïve. The archaic violent form of dominance is still there. Look at the news. It is mostly perpetrated by young low status male who wants easy access to resource and sex. Fortunately it is not legal. Society has opted, maybe unconsciously, for the “happy” natural selection. Don’t get me wrong, it means that society have suppressed violence as a legitimate source of happiness.

By the way, don’t think that civilization has suppressed natural selection. Of course we help the poorest and the weakest. This does not affect natural selection in the sense that this help don’t turn them suddenly into happy mating possibility. Happiness selection is carried out surreptitiously and unconsciously. In addition, it is a statistical game. The happier you are, the more chance you have to meet a woman who corresponds to your happiness level. But that does not happen always. All what is needed for natural selection it that it happens in average more often than it does not. During a “happy” confrontation, two individuals will estimate their dominance by trying to assess their level of happiness. It is not innocent that in our western cultures the first thing we ask is the state of the others: “Ca va ?”, “How are you doing ?”, “Wie geht es dir ?”, “Come estai?”, “Come esta”, “Come stai”… The semantic uniformity reveals a powerful confrontational instinct. Our reptilian brain is going to determine our rank in the dominance hierarchy. If you are a strong guy, then you will draw confidence and happiness from it because you know that you impress. Appearance is nothing, the way you perceive yourself is everything. If you’re strong and depressed you’ll be the loser because we, humans, are affective creatures.

This confrontation looks strange. You would expect that the loser is going to be hurt in some way, losing a chunk of his happiness. This is not the case. The loser is going to gain more happiness. Intuitively, it is reasonable to observe that a happy person does some good to an unhappy one. Human dominance establishes itself softly, without violence in a win/win relationship. The happiest increase the dominance of the less happy. In essence, the French philosopher Alain was right: “Good mood is something generous, it gives more than it takes”.

However it “receives” because natural selection does not operate in beautiful naïve la la land. The old dominant/submissive relationship story is still on. Don’t forget that all is done to grant differential access to reproduction. On top of it, the submissiveness will bring additional value to the dominant. The submitted will grant some time and resource to for his beloved dominant which can be considered as a sort of rewarding pavlovian soma. You think I’m kidding, just wait for the next posts, we’ll go more practical. But remember that if you consider happiness as a natural selection tool, you should see it as neither good nor bad like a river flowing from a mountain. Machiavelli did not live in la la land when it gave this piece of advice to his prince: “People will like you more for what they have done for you than for the things you did for them”.

The conceptual power of happiness lies in its viral capacity to be transmitted. Physical dominant traits are fixed, static. Visual communication is restricted only to present people whereas happiness can still be communicated to others. You don’t believe it? It is scientifically proved though. We’ll see that in a next post. Happiness should be a good candidate to support a social game theory. It establishes a universal dominance hierarchy. All other tangible traits like strength or intelligence only establish local dominance hierarchy meant to…generate happiness used in the universal dominance hierarchy. Athletes are going to use their body for competition. Intellectuals are going to confront their ideas. Philosophers of antiquity are going to play their eloquence game. Bakers are going to make the best possible bread and the winegrower is going to produce the best possible wine. They will do it to which end? For money? No, primarily for happiness, for dominance or for the will to power as would put it Nietzsche. Happiness is the glue that makes all of us stay together in what I will call from now on the dominance structure. It is the particular dominance hierarchy that rests on happiness. Tribes or civilizations were built on this phenomenon. How can you mix so different people in one group if there isn’t a common language? It is not innocent that the most powerful country in the world promotes diversity and happiness, the latter being written in the constitution as a legitimate goal to pursue. Power and happiness are linked. The one is the cause of the other, and vice versa. And the more people are happy, the more you’re happy. French writer Boris Vian knew it: “My happiness is made up of everyone’s happiness”.

Once again, the confrontational process is mostly unconscious and peaceful. It is the main strength of this innovation of the evolution: no one gets hurt which is better for group survival, but it can still continue its merciless process of natural selection. It occurs in the limbic part of your brain which is the reward system involved in the happiness feeling. For some people, the process can be conscious. The frontier between conscious and unconscious is blurred and depend on people. For some people the confrontational happiness based process is conscious and this can lead to sufferings. French psychiatrist Christophe Andre describes a patient who is jealous of others’ happiness. She compares her happiness with the one of her “adversary” and finds herself always losing the game. This jealousy is a cause for happiness depletion which makes her less able to win the next “combats”. Being conscious might be the cause of this absence of win/win relationship. There is a more obvious cause that we will be discussed later on. All in all French writer Pierre Daninos is right in stating that: “People do not know if they’re happy, however they’re fully aware of others’ happiness!”.

Of course, the conscious brain (neocortex) can take over at all times to adjust the behavior according to the interests of the participants. However, instantly, your brain knows thanks to happiness whether there is a dominance relationship. The relationship can also be neutral. Intuitively, at same level of happiness, there are no dominance/submissive relationships. This is valid for 80% of the relationships as we are more or less all located on the same euthymic level. The equality concept that French are so fond of has a statistical validity. The distribution of dominance follows doubtless a normal law. The more your dominance is far from the average, the rarer it is. Bipolars type I are 1% of the population, overdominant population is indeed very rare. Then less dominant hyperthymic are more abundant but still rare. The reasoning is the same for subdominant (depressed) people.

The maniac (overdominant) doesn’t care how to get happiness because it is not dependent any more on the relationships with other or on the victory against the milieu (Environment and local dominance hierarchy). He’s ecstatic beyond human recognition and the fact that he’s keen on establishing new social interaction should not be a surprise. He’s urged to do so like a dominant animal wants to fight to establish its dominance.

Once again, happiness is not the unique dominance trait. But it is the direct one. All others are meant to generate happiness. They are indirect. Female will try to derive dominance/happiness from all other traits which are visible. If you’re not happy because of dominant trait, it means that these traits do not provide any benefit in the struggle for life. A trait is static and Nature is not stupid. It has invented happiness to check the usage of the trait in its environment. In some ways, happiness reflects the environment within the male’s brain. Women are then able to check the environment judgment in the very heart of males. Nature is clever, did you ever doubt so? Happiness is a synthetic reflection of the relationship that tangible dominant traits like intelligence, strength, creativity establish with the milieu. It is also based on a history of interactions with the environment. Some brain chemistry is involved in the retention of theses info. The sentiment of this brain chemistry is happiness.

Have you ever doubt that happiness was THE dominance trait? Intuitively, we all think that a love relationship will make us happy. Maybe, but this is not the main point. The main point is that happiness is the pre-condition to meet (and have sex with) someone. Women are attracted by happy man because they know that they will make her happy (and not only in bed). For woman, I can’t say but surely happiness will make you more Jolie. Not convinced? Let’s listen to the professionals!:

Source : lefigaro.fr. “La séduction, ça ne rigole pas”, Yes seduction matters!
Here’s the seduction expert package you get for 1790 EUR per week: coach PDT (Personal development techniques), sexologist, psychologist, image counseling, and stylists. In order to be ready to meet someone, you need to learn how to be happy when you are alone” explains Coach Elodie Puech.

The love academy and French writer Paul Claudel do agree: “Happiness is not the end, it is the mean of life”. To the contrary, depressed people are not happy and have no mating opportunity. This sad post found on the internet is revealing:

Source: Post on the internet.
Hi, This post is meant for people aged 25,26 who did not have any affective relationship with the other sex, who are always alone and no hope to get out of this situation. Do you think often to suicide? I do every day. Do you feel inferior vis-à-vis the others? How do you explain the fact that others manage to communicate with the other sex, and not you? Do you have a thing that gives you a little pleasure in this life? Or like me, the affective relationship absence prevents you from finding happiness? I know what I write is a little bit sad, but I need to speak about it from time to time. Those who have made their way through life do not understand me. Thanks for your participations.

The only thing that this person does not understand is that he must find what makes him happy before he has a chance to meet someone. Local dominance hierarchies are meant for that. Find something that you like and then go for it. We call that passion. There is a variety of thing here to be happy from. That’s what makes us human. The variety of way to be happy, which hides the variety of local dominance hierarchy, was spawned by happiness. Happiness was first what made you happy from the environment and soon became also what made happy from the happiness of the others. This post is also sad verification of steve moxon’s thesis that dominance hierarchies are meant to suppress male from reproductive access (« Dominance hierarchy as integral to reproductive suppression, an adaptation consequent to the evolution of male »).

We have defined happiness like a synthetic variable that estimates the level of dominance. However, there’s a theoretical problem. How can a feeling be perceived by the outside world like the tangible dominance traits (Strength, eloquence, intelligence…)? Happiness is indeed an internal psychological state. I like to be dominant, but how this gets reflected in the outside world? This will be solved in the next post.

In the previous chapters, I’ve demonstrated that the infernal trio (Racing thoughts, self-esteem, and almightiness) is to be blamed for the loss of control of the maniac and for his disconnection from the world. I didn’t really elaborate on hallucinations or delusions because I think they are akin to racing thoughts in the sense that creation of image can be compared to creation of ideas. In any case, it is the fact that you believe in them that makes you crazy. That’s why self-esteem is primary in the reasoning. The infernal trio is regulated by the dominance “volume knob” which has, according to psychiatry, five perceptible values: underdominance (melancholia, severe depression), subdominance (light depression), normodominance (euthymia), dominance (hypomania), and overdominance (mania). This post will lay the emphasis on almightiness which I described a little bit too quickly in the previous post. In my opinion, almightiness is the strongest form of happiness which is reached only in overdominance. In this post I’m going to go in deep with this link and explain what happiness is.

Happiness has been defined in multiple ways in philosophy and in psychology. I have neither the talent nor the patience to put pen to paper to express all imaginable perspectives on happiness. I’ve carefully read a book from Christophe Andre, a famous French psychiatrist. What he wrote is a good summary of what have been said about happiness from almost all perspectives. However, there was a big dimension missing which is always derived from the same ethologic question. If something exists in a living individual, why on earth evolution has provided it? What’s the use of it from a natural selection perspective? Is it just there to make us… happy? If happiness exists, it must have a function in the natural selection. And I can tell you happiness exists because as far as I’m concerned if fluctuates from mild sadness to ecstatic heights, following the moods of my mood.

First of all, happiness to me is a feeling of a state rather than functionality like the self-esteem that support and protect the self. To me, it is an extremely synthetic signal which indicates that the individual fits for his social, natural, affective, sexual or financial environment. As it is underlined by Christophe Andre, some people are more capable of happiness than the other (innate capacity) however it is reassuring to see that it can also be built through action (acquired happiness). This demonstrates the idea that this synthetic parameter can combine DNA and experience (innate/acquired). This reward is sometime transient sometime everlasting. It really depends on individuals. What makes one happy is a vast question which is address scantly in the internet. Why there is happiness does not seems to be as popular. So let’s try to sort this out.

So why did Nature invent happiness? Just for fun? I don’t think so. All complex systems need simple indicator to manage themselves. For example in the corporate world, there is a trend toward measurement of performance through simple indicator. These are called KPIs (Key performance indicators). You need an army of post graduates to come up with simple addition or multiplication. KPIs are necessary. Without them, companies cannot make the best decisions on their internal process and also in term of strategy vis-à-vis the environment. Happiness is the individual KPI. It is the measure of your capacity to maintain a good relationship with your inner self and your environment. Thus it is for me the most reliable indicator of dominance. Again, I want to distinguish it from the self-esteem, which may be part of the indicator mix. You can imagine someone who’s absolutely persuaded that what he does is great. If this always leads him into troubles, there’s no big happiness gain.

So you thought that happiness was an innocent feeling that Nature in its great kindness granted us? Absolutely not. Happiness is a reward of you current adaptation vis-à-vis the environment, the milieu so to speak. A hidden feeling of power is lurking behind it. In Euthymia, it indicates that you’re fit. You like life and prevail on all obstacles which are in your ways. Overdominance turns it into an almighty feeling. During a manic episode, the dominance “volume knob” forces happiness to reach the dangerous almightiness level. There is absolutely no change in the milieu that justifies such a happiness feeling change. This demonstrates that we are talking about an endogenous variable the malfunction of which impacts all functions of the individuals. The dominance volume knob is the underlying control that regulates not only happiness (“almightiness”) but also motor functioning (“agitated state”), self-esteem (“inflated self-esteem”), sexuality (“hypersexuality”) and thought (“racing thoughts”). Happiness is the dominance KPI, which enable to make the best decision to increase our “might”. But it has another more interesting purpose, which will be disclosed exclusively in this blog in the next post. Stay connected!

In the previous posts we discussed the racing thoughts which demonstrate that “something

In the previous posts we discussed the racing thoughts which demonstrate that “something” accelerates them and catalyzes their connections. This “something” seems to strengthen the self-esteem which turns ideas and your very idea of you into certitudes along with protecting you against the negative effects of the environment (doubt, negative emotions, judgment of others). Why not assuming that there is a unique control behind these phenomena? It would resemble any biochemical controls like homeostasis. Since it “improves” functioning and would bring selective value if mastered, why not calling it dominance? This would explain bipolar madness by an excess of dominance.

The last factor I want to mention that drives you crazy is the feeling of almightiness. Not only you have racing thoughts, overconfidence in your capacity, but you “enjoy” also this wild feeling that you are stronger than the environment. This is another step toward utter craziness. Where does this manic feeling come from? If we follow the procedure of the “volume knob” we can answer this question. When you are overdominant you experience almightiness. When you’re normal, this feeling is turned into happiness. When you’re down, then it is sadness, down again and then it is melancholia. You can see that the dominance volume knob concept is powerful in interpreting your swing of mood. It is very difficult to distinguish between almightiness and self-esteem. But I don’t think they are the same because, during mixed episode, a general depressed mood goes along with high level of self-esteem. You are sad and you get convinced that the best way out is suicide. However I’m not 100% sure that happiness and self-esteem are distinct brain chemistry.

I don’t want to elaborate too much now on happiness. In the next posts, I will discuss it from a natural selection perspective. This will enable me to answer a question I raised to myself during my episode III, when I suddenly became the dominant bonobo. After this, I hope you’ll be able to understand what bipolar madness is. I did not mention delusion, hallucination or psychotic intervals because they are peripheral. The main problem is that you believe in them. But we’ll talk about them later on. All you need to remember is that craziness is mostly created by creation of reality (delusion) and ideas (racing thoughts) and the belief in them. All this happen generally in a generalized feeling of utter happiness. These brain phenomena would be nothing really new in town if there were another one that I will progressively disclose in the next posts. This will have strong ties with happiness.

Source : mixed episode definition, wikipedia
In the context of mental disorder, a mixed state, also known as dysphoric mania, agitated depression, or a mixed episode, is a condition during which symptoms of mania and depression occur simultaneously, such as agitation, anxiety, fatigue, guilt, impulsiveness, irritability, morbid or suicidal ideation, panic, paranoia, pressured speech and rage. Typical examples include tearfulness during a manic episode or racing thoughts during a depressive episode. One may also feel incredibly frustrated or be prone to fits of rage in this state, since one may feel like a failure and at the same time have a flight of ideas. Mixed states are often the most problematic period of mood disorders, during which susceptibility to substance abuse, panic disorder, commission of violence, suicide attempts, and other complications increase greatly.

In the previous post, I’ve shown that dominance is a two ways amplifier of thought. Quantitati

In the previous post, I’ve shown that dominance is a two ways amplifier of thought. Quantitatively, it increases its throughput and qualitatively, it catalyzes its connections which are established on an anarchic basis during a manic episode. The neocortex is unable to cope with the flight of ideas. Therefore this sentiment of losing control leads to the feeling that thoughts are not under the mind control any more. Manic mood has also a significant amplifying impact on another part of the self. Up front, it could be argued that it would be possible to neutrally observe the whirling ideas and wait for them to end. You could somehow get used to the storm thinking it’s not really real. This is made impossible by a well-known psychological trait: Self-Esteem. From an evolutionary psychology perspective, it is linked with the “mating value” or, more poetically, the “romantic desirability”. Science confirms what we know intuitively: Women are attracted by self-confident men.

Source: Evolutionary Psychology – ISSN 1474-7049 – Volume 9(2). 2011. / An Implicit Theory of Self-Esteem: The Consequences of Perceived Self-Esteem for Romantic Desirability
The present studies provide additional support for the existence of an implicit theory of self-esteem such that an individual’s level of self-esteem influences how he or she is perceived by others. The results of the present studies found that individuals with ostensibly higher levels of self-esteem were generally viewed more positively on domains related to romantic desirability than those with lower levels of self-esteem. However, important exceptions to this pattern emerged such that women with high self-esteem were not always viewed positively on dimensions such as Warmth-Trustworthiness and attractiveness.

Let’s be more specific than the study. For males, self-esteem is a key factor in access to reproduction. It is more important in males than in females as it is pointed out in the study. Self-esteem follows the fluctuations of the mood level in bipolar patients. So the more you are dominant, the more your mood is elevated, the stronger is the self-esteem. This is again a pure logic statement that self-esteem depends on dominance or mood. And manic symptoms just demonstrate it. “Inflated self-esteem” is located on top of the pdoc check list.

Psychologists have a slightly differing definition of self-esteem. It is more mind centric in the sense that it is an external evaluation of the subject vis-à-vis his own set of values. When this evaluation has a positive outcome, self-esteem follows the same positive path. In between the psychiatrist and psychologist views, a more neurologic oriented definition would underline the link between self-esteem and dominance brain chemistry. Dominance does not depend on the subject decision otherwise the evolution game will be flawed. Likewise I cannot decide suddenly to be self-confident. To me, Self-confidence is a neurologic mechanism that evaluates the self vis-à-vis… himself. Dominance and self-confidence are not the same though. I had racing thoughts without increased self-esteem. So it demonstrates that self-esteem doesn’t take command. Dominance is the highest system level that controls the manic symptom like self-confidence and racing thoughts.

To make things a little bit clearer, let’s try to derive the definition from experience. We all know these people that we reject because their self-esteem, their evaluation of themselves compare to themselves, does not match their actual capacities. This does not prevent the subject from keeping on acting like a braggart. You can talk to him, you can show how stupid he is, he will nonetheless goes on and on although the milieu is rejecting him. In order to explain this appalling perseverance, you need to understand self-esteem as a neurologic function. Paradoxically it does not “estimate” or “evaluate” because the dominance system does that and decides the self confidence level. When the dominance is up, there is an increase in the perception that you are right whatever the external conditions. That is exactly what I mean by increased self-esteem. This is a self-protection system that supports thinking and action. It protects them for external aggression like the judgment of others and the danger of the milieu. To summarize, self-esteem enables you to be you without doubt. The more you reduce the doubts about yourself, the more you are self-confident. This completely sounds at normal level of dominance. You can be sure like 2 + 2 = 4, or that you’re usual workplace is not going to move suddenly 1000 miles away. All these information were learned and are part of you. This is reasonable self-esteem at work. So you may ask how we can affect self-esteem. The more relevant question is why mood has ups and downs or why dominance fluctuates. The answer is not simple as you may think.

When dominance shifts to overdominance (mania), the self-esteem protection goes stronger and stronger until a point where the maniac is isolated from the milieu. He won’t be fit anymore because his self-esteem, which is usually a reasonable guarantee that what you are is true, has reached a level that locks him up in a mental jail. He will think that he’s absolutely true or fit for reality while he has already lost grip on it. Craziness is not only delusion. It is also the total absence of doubt which triggers absolute agreement to whatever is flying in a manic mind. Delirium should be separated from its manic agreement if you want to understand self-esteem as I do. The more incredible is the delusion, the stronger the self-esteem needs to be so that the madman can believe in what he says. At high level of dominance, believe me, his sincerity cannot be challenged!

Self-esteem has a fascinating effect on thought. All people think that thought is neutral. In fact it has a taste which can only be detected by bipolar. An indeed normal person does not feel variation of dominance as it is small and slow. Only a sudden change in dominance makes it possible to feel the self-esteem induced taste. I will always remember these 40 seconds where my thoughts were racing. The speed was not the most impressing phenomenon. The most amazing was the absolute belief that those thoughts were true. I don’t even remember their contents. Only the sentiment of absolute truth would remain carved in my brain. Racing thoughts and self-esteem can be separate phenomenon even if they are triggered by elevated mood (dominance). You can handle the pace of the ideas but it is very hard to stay sane if self-esteem stay at a high level over a long period. I had racing thoughts without being absolutely convinced so these phenomena are distinct. Self-esteem makes everything within the range of your inner self a Truth irrespective of the environment. It seems these things happen to the cleverest people even if they are not bipolars. This demonstrates that there is an underlying cause behind all this which makes mood disorders a proximate cause. The ultimate cause is a dominance fluctuation which is short and devoid of dire aftermath.

Source: Les démons de Gödel, the Gödel’s Daemons, Pierre Cassou Noguès
Between 1906 and 1910, Husserl had a psychological crisis…During this period, at a particular moment, everything became suddenly clear and he reached an absolute knowledge.

To Gödel, It seems not possible to “transfer this absolute knowledge to someone else. You cannot publish it”. You know why? Obviously because truth is not a discursive thought, it is a powerful feeling that makes your ideas feel like truth. In some twisted way, at dominance peak, if you think that you’re the next designated messiah then you are going to believe it courtesy of this powerful misleading feeling of utter clarity. Truth is not reached, but something else is hit. You don’t guess what? We’ll discuss that in a next episode.

The problem with this particular kind of certitude is that it can lead to paranoia essentially because the certitude object is you. You are absolutely sure of what you think and do. This inflates your ego in a pathologic way to such an extent where suspicion arise vis-à-vis the rest of the world. Everyone’s plotting against you to put an end to your exceptional life full of certitude. If one day, paranoia is to be seriously understood, then the neural self-esteem effect will have to be deciphered. As far as I am concerned I’ve never felt paranoia. However I can understand people going berserk if a peak of self-esteem last more than 40 seconds.

Nature is going to have a hard time trying to find a solution to this excess of self-esteem which disconnects you from the world. This breeze that whispers into your ears everyday: “You’re right being what you are, you’re right thinking what you think, and you are worth living your life” become a manic hurricane that vociferates: “you are god, you’re absolutely right, what you think is irrespective of the environment”. The maniac is sincere but he’s also way out of line. His truth is said without any sensible analysis of the external world: “I’m god, I’m Napoleon, I’m Mother Mary”. The Excess of self-esteem is fascinating. At a normal level, it is a dominant trait that is appreciated by the opposite sex. Thus this increases your selective value. However, it collapses during the manic excesses because you lose grip with reality. If your representation of reality is completely wrong, you will act in a way that will decrease your chance survival chances and leads you to an almost certain Darwinian death.

In the previous post r(evolution), I established a link between the selective value and dominance and we concluded that beyond a certain threshold, the fitness plummeted. Excess of self-esteem is the main culprit for that. This harmless sensation, that enables us to live and link concepts confidently at euthymia, becomes a mental jail during mania. Nature will have to solve this excess by counterbalancing self-esteem with superior brain functions (Doubt, deliberation, analysis…). However, it will surely not suppress self-esteem because it is necessary in the evolution game for it is the link between what is thought and what is done effectively. Millions years ago, crazy fishes needed a firm conviction to get out of the water. This was protected by some kind of self-esteem. Nature is logical. It creates new behaviors and isolates it from all what can interfere with it. It wants you to go down it. Dominance is what happens inside that push for novelty. Fishes will try until a mutation enables them to survive outside the water. The question is why would fish get out of the water whilst they are particularly well outfitted to survive in water? Nature needs crazy fish. Nature needs craziness.

The instinct that pushes people to adventure is related to Self-esteem. You should not reduce this trait to an automatic and visible capacity to brag. It can express itself in seemingly normal and humble people. It runs within the veins of famous French sailors like Tabarly. Our admiration for these people stem from the fact they are dominant. Courage is a form of self-esteem. Courageous people are confident that they will be able to overcome whatever obstacles are on their way. These people are not wannabe, they risk their lives and this fascinates us in some ways.

Self-esteem turns easily new connections into thoughts, new thoughts into will and new will into actions. Action is more based on certitude than doubt. This explains the legendary distractibility of manic people. Their uncontrollable thoughts are turned into certitude by self-esteem which is then acted upon. Hence multiple whimsical projects will flourish because of the exuberant creativity of the mind unconstrained activity. The maniac is sheltered from doubt and contradiction but keen on acting upon protean ideas. This will make him sink into his world. As far as I’m concerned, in my first manic episode, the idea of death was not longer frightening. To such an extent I wanted to know what was next and I found all this very amusing. Self-esteem just made the conservation instinct disappear. Did you doubt about the overdominance power? Mania is stronger than you.

Source : http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/37010.php
EN: Thoughts come and go rapidly (racing thoughts). Sometimes, bizarre solutions come to the patient’s mind, and they are acted upon. This may involve, for example, attempting to re-wire the house or re-arrange everything that is in the fridge in order to solve a totally unrelated problem.

The maniac always chooses is own perspective, break all limits confidently. The social group excludes him. All information reaches the maniac, however the self-esteem filter interprets everything with his absolute ego. During my up, my emotions are no more affected negatively and I don’t suffer from the relationships with others. Things are easier because self-confidence shield me from the exterior. I feel like I’m really myself without fear or anxiety. Self-esteem is really something that turns you into a terminator. I’ve always been fascinated by the power of this character. It complies with a formal computer logic which is a sort of absolute form of certitude. No parasite emotions hinder the accomplishment of its objective. This is self-esteem at its highest: a caricature of yourself.

After having established a new underlying “animal” parameter in the bipolar disorder, we

After having established a new underlying “animal” parameter in the bipolar disorder, we will attempt to explain the bipolar madness by an excess of dominance. It is ambitious, but if the previous posts were read, the following demonstration will be not difficult to understand, almost intuitive. It is easy to comprehend that a dominance excess can exert a major impact on the most evolved brain functions like thought. Mind behaves exactly like motor or sexual functions during the manic tsunami: it gets amplified. Dominance catalyzes thoughts to the same extent that the best is the enemy of the good.

It works literally like a self control which can get you out of control. It impacts thought in two ways. First it significantly accelerates the throughput. Second, it catalyzes its content by improving what is the main job of the brain: establishing connections. This manic symptom is called by English psychiatrist “racing thoughts”. In France, it is called tachypsychia (literally “fast mind”), but it seems to have a different meaning in English. The racing thoughts do not give the full picture of the symptom. True, we get the sentiment, substantiated by experience, that ideas are whirling very fast, but what should not get missed is the massive change in the connection engine.

Connections are no longer only made based on logic, organic intuition or emotion. They are based on frenzy ‘whateverism’: crazy association of ideas, more or less clever puns, and assonances. Train of thought derails or switches repeatedly to unexpected direction, giving hard time to whomever attempts to follow the discussion. Thoughts seem to declare independence from will. They spring like water (push) whereas, usually, thinking requires an effort (pull).Try to think about a geyser instead of a water source. This autonomy and automation of thoughts have this unexpected consequence that the maniac may think he’s literally losing his mind and being turned into a spectator of his own inner monolog. However this chaos belongs to the maniac who is scared of his own accelerated thoughts being “externally” viewed by the mind. Conscience and thought linkage is broken paving the way for psychotic episode. You can really compare motor functioning and racing thoughts. Psychomotor agitation is the declaration of independence of the body vis-à-vis the mind exactly the same way as racing thoughts is vis-à-vis the will. How can you not see that there is a common denominator in these symptoms? Racing body and thoughts are triggered by excess of dominance.

In any case, whenever I admit a mood elevation the first thing that my pdoc ask me is the state of my thoughts: “Are your thoughts racing?”. As far as I am concerned, this is the main symptom of my manic episodes (overdominance). In contrast, the slow throughput and poor connection capacity reveal depression (underdominance). I’ve never experienced that fortunately swaying only from manic to slightly depressed.

You could consider that thought acceleration and massive burgeoning could be interpreted per se as an increase in selective value. It’s always better to think like a cheetah rather than like a slug. But there is just one problem: the logical brain that structures, doubt sand judges is out of order. Your neocortex is overwhelmed and cannot get this idea flow under control. It means that the excess of dominance does overwhelm the mind which is unable to turn this frenzy creativity into a selective gain. The brakes I was mentioning in the previous post do not exist yet. It is reasonable to assert that we currently think at a much faster pace than our ancestors and this will be improved in the future. Not tomorrow, be patient, we’re reasoning on a hundreds of thousands years basis here. As to the increase in connection, the neocortex has given up structuring thoughts according to social obligations, taste or conceptual capability. Anything can pop up into your mind and you don’t know where it comes from. However you like to share them, we’ll know why in the next post. All in all, mind is not controlled any more by any constraints. The connection engine is going to spiral out of control while dismissing the milieu sanctions. The maniac is going, almost by definition, to achieve the first stage of creation by supplying loads of brand new stuff. The demand side, that is the environment, will accept or reject it. This entails or not the creation cycle completion. But in all cases, you’re not god. It is much more likely that natural selection is just toying with you.

I stress that a positive sanction from the milieu is necessary otherwise the error remains…an error. But errors are necessary otherwise the creation process cannot be started. Thus nature is fond of them and generates tons of them. It just has to wait and time is on its side. The spark will turn one day into a flame and the night will be set ablaze. Dominance catalyzes the creation process in generating tons of behavioral errors. Maybe the capacity of learning behaviors was spark turned into a flame a long, long time ago. At the conscience level, dominance spurs creativity. No wonder that bipolars are known to be extremely creative.

Source: Science daily, Link Between Creativity and Mental Illness Confirmed in Large-Scale Swedish Study
The results confirmed those of their previous study, that certain mental illness — bipolar disorder — is more prevalent in the entire group of people with artistic or scientific professions, such as dancers, researchers, photographers and authors. Authors also specifically were more common among most of the other psychiatric diseases (including schizophrenia, depression, anxiety syndrome and substance abuse) and were almost 50 per cent more likely to commit suicide than the general population.

Creative mind is not sufficient: you need some sort of sanction by the milieu. In case of artistic profession, the environment is difficult to define. This will be addressed in a next post. However remember that milieu is not the unique sieve, your brain is also a good filter. It aborts thoughts at a very early stage when they have no relevance for survival. Natural selection starts into your brain. Maybe that filter is disinhibited during manic episode and let the geyser surges to the surface.

There aren’t too many heuristics to adapt to change. Either you rationally analyses the situation and act upon it or you patiently generates errors until one fit the change requirement. The former is a human approach the latter is Nature way of dealing with problem. Manic episode is surely how nature tries to create adaptation through errors. Since creativity can be construed as a dominance consequence, it will continue to increase in the future. It has already shown clear indication toward that trend if you consider the last centuries. Nowadays, it is a particular paroxysmal firework. But the better may be yet to come. Inventiveness seems even to prevail on power. Steve Jobs and Steve “the woz” wozniak have changed your life more than the politicians. Be convinced that power is not necessarily the more obvious form of dominance. I’ll develop this aspect later.

As far as I am concerned, racing thoughts is just fear, nothing else. It was extremely impressing to be on the brink of losing the control of what you consider to be the fundamental pillar of self-consciousness. From a philosophical perspective, I build a shield that consists in believing that thought is not part of my ultimate consciousness. It’s just a peripheral device, my true self being something else located near somewhere else. The brain secrets thoughts as the liver secrete bile. That’s all and this is enough to reassure me. When I’m up, I told my brain that I’m not interested in its lip service and I’m not going to pay for it. I apply also relaxation techniques based on abdominal breath. This helps to understood how the state of your body impacts your train of thoughts. This symptom has more or less disappeared now. Maybe it is the age and the fact that you accept that all problems cannot be solved by thoughts. I apply the Gödel theorem of incompleteness that demonstrates that system creates problem that it cannot solve. Well, all this is easier said than done.

I hope this post reminded you on the previous one. Racing thoughts are like the high speed car. But evolution does not provide the brakes at exactly the time it increases the speed. Neocortex inhibitors are not yet ready to overcome this insane data flow raging in your mind. Brakes are not meant to suppress the speed. They are aimed at controlling them in order to gain selective advantage. They also convert kinetic energy into heat that can be used for other purposes. Time and scant fortune are on Nature’s side. Racing thoughts, erratic connections, overwhelmed neocortex is a recipe to get mad. However, unfortunately, this is not it. There is also another mind attribute which get amplified also by dominance. This one is particularly vicious and it will be tackled in the next post.

In this post, I will attempt to address one of the central questions of this blog. The selective val

In this post, I will attempt to address one of the central questions of this blog. The selective value (fitness) of the maniac effectively tends to zero whilst its dominance seems to be above normal. Indeed we have demonstrated that a lot of manic behaviors suggest dominant or, at least, improved functioning if considered one by one. However the set of dominant or improved functions, that is, the maniac himself, seems to cause a crash of his selective value. How do you get access to reproduction in hospital when loaded with deleterious substances? How can you seriously consider the maniac as dominant while society strongly and brutally disagrees with his behaviors? It has no other choice but to take all legal proceedings to lock him up urgently without any judgment. He is treated with less legal standard compared to criminals. If you “Pleistocene” the milieu a little bit, think of the sharp rejection of the community as well as potential lethal fights against the dominant individual who agonistically defend their statuses. Moreover how can you contribute to your own maintenance (hunt, predators…) when you’re losing grip on reality? These questions are perfectly valid and they will get an answer in this post and in the following ones.

Intuitively, it is obvious that the maniacs are not fit for reality. They have somehow crossed the mirror or the social wall that delimits sanity and insanity. Insanity can then be defined with a Darwinian flavor: What is crazy is what is constantly not fit. And here you can insert the Darwinian concept of fitness in the picture. The flawed behavior does not seem to be correctable. This is a mark of unfitness.

The “volume knob” has reached a level beyond which the maniac loses grip with reality. Whereas dominance was synchronous with selective value, the fitness suddenly drops during a manic episode. It tends rapidly to zero while dominance is still on the rise. This demonstrates a very simple thing: Fitness and dominance are two distinct phenomena which can be barely identified at an average value of dominance. When dominance rises, there is a clear decoupling between them. From a conceptual point of view they need to be indeed separated. Dominance is a catalyst, an amplifier of what you are. It is a pure brain chemistry related phenomenon, it has no theoretical limit and evolution pressure pushes for increase in the trend. However fitness (selective value) is essentially an external evaluation of what you are when you are compared to the milieu. Fitness is not infinite; it is limited by the milieu. If you consider that there is an excess of dominance as regard to what can be handled by the environment, you end up having defined craziness more accurately. Dominance is significant in animals. Suddenly because we’re human, it should not exist anymore? I think we are a little bit arrogant. Especially that we don’t know yet what is human dominance exactly. We’ll disclose that in other posts. But to me, it is in any case not only
based on physical traits but also and doubtless mostly on brain chemistry.

Let’s be clearer by using automotive metaphors. Dominance can be compared to an accelerator pedal. It can be easily compared because any phenomenon with variation will do. The dominance job does not consist in creating directly new features. First it will make things more intense. It won’t create speed, it will make the driver goes faster. Second, the driver will have to manage the speed increase so that it improves his fitness. Here occurs the creative power of dominance. Fitness and speed are in sync only if the milieu validates the behavior. The gap between the two triggers a creative pressure. The road behavior quality can be compared with a measure of fitness. It will result both from the road conditions (The milieu, the cars, the driver) and the speed (the dominance). If speed does not fit the road condition then there is a crazy crash. The more you accelerate, the more likely you are to overtake the other cars (dominance hierarchy). But if you step on it too much, irrespective of the road conditions, you’re bound to undergo a crash. The metaphor is not 100% accurate because maniacs don’t have control over this erratic accelerator which is located in our brain. Whilst normal people drive at a speed which ensures life conservation, the maniac speed up at 500 mph which is totally unacceptable for society on the one hand and one the other hand his chance of survival are very weak. Increased dominance forces the individual to evolve with exceptional parameters which may be or not fit for reality. In order to survive, the overdominant (the maniac) must create to adjust the new parameters to the milieu. It can be and is very gradual process. This looks to me like a typical error and trial based process. This is the kind of thing that nature likes a lot. Most of the time, it fails. Most of the time does not mean all time if you consider millions of years.

Approximately we can assert that the selective value depend somehow on dominance. The latter is an autonomous concept of the self that can concretely lead an individual to craziness if the amplified behaviors are rejected by the milieu. It is possible to describe the relationship between fitness and dominance using a quasi linear function. Intuitively, zero dominance means zero fitness. How can you reproduce yourself when you want to constantly commit suicide? You don’t need a PhD to understand that depressed people are not appealing to women. Maximum dominance means also a zilch fitness because you can’t really flirt when you are psychotic. In between these two states, fitness and dominance are in linear relation. Below is a very simplified sketch of this relation. It will be refined in next posts. This diagram assumed an identical environment and an amplification of behavior that are rewarded by the milieu. All in all, dominance vary and all other things except fitness being equal.

A few remarks can be derived from these simple and intuitive ideas. It is usually thought that fitness or selective value is above all dependent on our genetic heritage. How the dominance fit into that picture? Dominance is a physiological phenomenon. It is controlled by genes coded in the DNA molecules. Bipolarity is a genetic disease. All these arguments validate that DNA and dominance are closely related. However they are not the same. Genes build the body, dominance inhabit it. Dominance fluctuates at identical gene, this confirm my assertion in bipolar ethology. However dominance may be a phenomenon that controls the expression intensity of the genes. This is major phenomenon which is of same significance as DNA. A popular belief goes that we only used 10% of our brain possibilities. The dominance theory may substantiate this folk neurology by revealing an essential fluctuating parameter that regulates everybody, not only the bipolars. We’ll go more in deep in the next articles.

But let’s go back to what matters at the moment. The maniac is victimized by overdominance and cannot adapt to the environment. The milieu of the social animal we are is the community of men and women. I find it not absurd at all to call Darwin and the evolution theory into the discussion. I’m not a specialist but everyone should be in our 21st century. It seems to me that according to this theory, Nature does thing on trial and error basis where error are created in huge quantity. For example, a gene mutation is an error that will be exposed to natural selection. If it brings a selective gain then the error is replaced by another term. Let’s say creation. The winning genes are then added to the gene pool.

The same principle applies for dominance. What the psychiatrist sees as errors or symptoms are in fact Nature trials. Dominance somehow performs stress test on you who is a combination of interacting innate and acquired features. This is aimed at creating new behaviors, new ideas or new functions which are somehow allowed by favorable (as regard to natural selection) mutations in the genetic material. Don’t forget that genes build your brain but environment carves it. There are doubtless multiple possible behaviors for one physical brain model. Dominance encourages new solution even with the same brain structure. Indeed, scanner shows that manic brains look like a Christmas tree. This certainly is beneficial for the long discussed all-round creativity gift of the bipolars. But it goes surely far beyond than just new ideas. Over a very long period, dominance can be considered as new behavioral builder. We’ll go in deep with this idea later. However, unfortunately, in 99.9% of nature trials, dominance triggers unfavorable outcome (asocial or crazy behaviors, sufferings…). We, bipolars, experience constantly these errors. But, again, time will hit the 0.01% gold nugget that will enhance the species. Next posts will discuss in detail the possible mechanism behind this nature wonder. It is surely not restricted to human.

There is another consequence derived from this theory. We are all used to thinking that natural selection depends on the external milieu. This is just part of the truth because dominance is another factor. Indeed you have to survive to massive surge of manic dominance, and believe me, this is no bed of roses compared to the survival in hostile environment. You need to find new strategy to survive this exceptional internal environment. Of course, the external milieu is the ultimate judge but you need to cope also with what’s inside. It is then possible to assert that dominance also shaped the DNA. Genes will find solution to deal with this excess of dominance that will be converted into selective gain provided the maniac find solutions to get access to reproduction and be sufficiently sane (fit) to raise his offspring. Maybe the incredible brain development is due to overdominance. Humans are the one who were the most subject to it and nature has found some ways to cope, bringing massive selective gain. Nietzsche, bipolar, wrote that you need to be the master inside yourself. He was a vanguard of the dominance theory as we will see later on.

Let’s go back to the automotive metaphor in order to clarify my ideas. If a hyperthymic (elevated mood) population steps constantly on it, it is likely that, after millions of years, the car will be able to bear the speed excess: improved brakes, aerodynamic design, high speed driving help, better shock absorber… This is the DNA job. It will also improve the driver: better reactivity, better anticipation, better risk management, better 3D vision, better trajectory selection… After millions of crash and suffering, the lucky driver will be all set to bring this excess of speed (dominance) under control. He will increase his selective value if the milieu rewards someone who is able to drive at 500 mph. If he manages to turn off the engine and look for mating opportunity, its genes will propagate across the pool genes. This resistance gene will benefit the normal-mooded community as it will increase the driving safety. The average selective value increases thanks to the maniacs!

I do not call natural selection into question. I just add an extremely powerful engine to it. Milieu and dominance are the pillars of natural selection. Now let’s stop with metaphorical explanation and let’s get to the bottom of it. It is obvious that overdominant do not have the neural structure to process the incredible flow of data. The short term memory system that stores new information is completely out of order. The body resists quite well, but the energy needed to sustain such an elevated mood trigger a significant weight loss. There is no one in my brain to command my racing thought to stop so that I’m able to carry out my favorite activities. My sleep is also disrupted by the massive excitation increase. This shows that the human species is still not used to the maximum of dominance it can generate. During my 3rd episode I was very afraid of having a heart attack. I was thinking to myself. “How much power can you sustain?”. Body does not seem to be that affected. Conclusion can be drawn that dominance focus on mind functions. This is its current job.

Natural selection favors genes that increase the dominance. Indeed, bipolar genes were not eliminated from the gene pool because they provide an advantage for the species, unfortunately not for the individual. Natural selection, at the same time, also favors gene that enable bringing dominance to control. This is the basis for new functionality which needs to be permitted by the DNA. Nature is a good mechanic; it improves the engine and the brakes. You can get all the speed you want, if there is no brake, you cannot drive properly. We are radially unequal vis-à-vis dominance because Nature is going to favor different level of dominance control. At a similar level of dominance, one can be called a crazy maniac whilst the other one will be called a hyperthymic, capable of being a locomotive where his passion leads him.

Another consequence of this theory lies in our ability to endlessly improve even if the milieu remains unchanged. Don’t get me wrong, it has been demonstrated that changes in the milieu has impacted our evolution. However and here the theory could be falsified, it should be possible to demonstrate that evolution continues even in the absence of significant milieu change. We improve ourselves constantly as shown by the progress of the last centuries which have significantly changed the model since we’re now able to change the environment, for better and worse.

If you want to understand the bipolar disorders you need this conceptual revolution that takes into account the theory of evolution. This theory reveals an internal barely known mechanism: pure dominance which is an internal measure as opposed to status dominance which a measure carried out by the environment. The bipolars are victimized by it through a phenomenon that no one wants to see or can see because, for example, psychiatrist talks rarely to ethologist. You, normal people, are on board of a train the speed of which is constant. We, bipolars, are in a different train. It constantly accelerates and decelerates. We are able to feel the swaying movement of pure dominance. Depressed and manic are not fit. If the train goes to slow, you’ll never arrive on time. If the train goes to fast, you’ll never arrive. Pure dominance is an algebraic number which is undetermined. All in all, the selective value depends on pure dominance, genes, and environment. The cumulative experience should not be forgotten. It is defined by excluding the other factors; it is in essence your personality. I don’t want to start a discussion on innate and acquired for they are two factors catalyzed by pure dominance. You can derive the following formula:

selective value (fitness) = (Innate + acquired)*pure optimal dominance

The optimal dominance is defined as a value maximizing the fitness given the gene and environment constraints. All human tend to optimal dominance. Some amplified traits will bring a selective gain but some others will reduce adaptability. All in all, beyond a certain dominance threshold, disadvantages will prevail on benefits, and the overall selective value will decrease. Sound like a good description of a manic state! For instant, strength can increase but aggressiveness will lead you to jail.

Dominance is not only a result but also a cause!

Dead kennedys / insight
Who’s that kid in the back of the room?
Who’s that kid in the back of the room?
He’s setting all his papers on fire
He’s setting all his papers on fire
where did he get that crazy smile?
Where did he get that crazy smile?
We all think he’s really weird
We all think he’s really weird
We never talk to him
He never looks quite right
He laughs at us
We just beat him up
What he sees escapes our sight
We never see him with the girls
We never see him with the girls
He’s talking to himself again
He’s talking to himself again
Why doesn’t he want tons of friends?
Why doesn’t he want tons of friends?
Says he’s bored when we hang around
Says he’s bored when we hang around
We never talk to him
He never looks quite right
He laughs at us
We just beat him up
What he sees escapes our sight
We’re all planning our careers
We’re all planning our careers
We’re all planning our careers
He says we’re growing old…

Milieu. “The physical or social setting in which something occurs or develops: environment.” Seattle

Milieu. “The physical or social setting in which something occurs or develops: environment.” Seattle Pacific University’s Principles of HOPE Standard H3 is an excellent reminder of the responsibilities an educator had to provide an environment where each child has the ability to grow and develop. {H3- Honor the classroom/school community as a milieu for learning. Teacher-candidates implement classroom/school centered instruction, including sheltered instruction that is connected to communities within the classroom and the school, and includes knowledge and skills for working with others.} Teachers will deliver instruction in an appropriate manner in which the child will flourish in his or her own unique way. In this course at Seattle Pacific University, EDU 2200: Foundations and Educational Psychology, we invested our time and knowledge in issues of education to become better educators for our students. We discussed developmental theories, child abuse and neglect, the history of American Public Education, as well as lesson planning and practice. Overall this course was the means by which I have developed my own teaching philosophy along with how I will integrate key theories into my classroom. The evidence I have attached is an in detail essay on the information gained from this course.

Along with the information from this course, I have gained experience by not only practicing a mini lesson in front of the EDU 2200 class, but also in volunteer work outside of the class and even outside of Seattle Pacific University. Working in real classrooms with real students can be scary as it often was, but the take away from this was the experience. Like I have stated in previous posts, I believe a teacher will never stop learn or improving. With this in mind, these experiences, along with the knowledge gained from this course, was an outstanding addition to my long journey into the realm of Education.

in brullende brommermotoren
onophoudelijk zonder weerga
en tot Moeders diepste verdriet

Als miezerige parasieten
zuigen we Moeder leeg
Desondanks dat men zegt:
“Vader moeder zult gij eren”

En zij verzwakt zienderogen
in haar moederliefde steeds weer
te vergevend, na een kwade orkaan
En wat dan? Jongen zonder verzorging

De Reduced Emmissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD een internationaal samenwerkin
