I received the oven very soon after placing my order.
Following the directions, I allowed the oven to ‘burn-in’prior to use.
I roasted two chickens as per directions and they turned out great.
The non-stick cookwell worked pretty well but there were a couple of areas where burned-on chicken did stick.
Next time, just to be sure, I’ll spray some non-stick cooking material to see if that cures this small problem.
Otherwise, I feel that this Nesco Roaster Oven does the job very well.

They say that being melancholy is mere self-indulgence; that there is a bright side if one just ceases to turn away from it. That may very well be true. But in the immortal words of Jose Chung, “If I used your therapies to wipe away my pain I’d disappear.” (“Jose Chung’s Doomsday Defense”, Millennium)

My issues were actually solved long ago. Why do I continue to let them torment me?

For one thing, it’s what I’m accustomed to doing. It is a habit.

And admittedly, sometimes it is useful in getting attention.

Last of all, it’s that bin theory of emotional impressions that was the basis of my social psychology project. There is a bin in my mind labeled “Me” and it is stocked with memories and feelings and beliefs that make up my self-image. Even though the memories fade and I change my beliefs, the feelings are the last to go. In some sense the feelings are integrated into the very fabric of the bin.

Unlike yesterday, this is a much more personal recollection of the decade. Well, what a decade it has been! The one that is clearest in my memory, and definitely the decade that will shape my years to come. And so how was it for me? Well, that is a very good question, that could only properly be answered in a few years time as I look back and contemplate the happenings of the past ten years. But it has definitely been a decade of two halves. At the beginning of the decade, I started it in revelry on the streets of London. And by the end of the decade I also will be on the streets of London, but not as boisterous as I will be working the night shift. In between it has been an eventful ten years.

The first half of the 2000’s was spent studying and travelling. I studied far too frivolously and travelled far too hard, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I visited a war zone to reconnect with my family, I climbed temples in the jungle, taught English to kids and adults, nearly died in a desert and hiked across the lands of the Moors. And then in 2004, I made an about turn and decided to pursue filming with a vigour. I surprised everyone that knew, me, alienated quite a few of them and got stuck into the business of making films. Now, six years later, and with very little to show for that decision, the big question to ask myself of this decade is ‘has it been a waste of my life?’ After all, these are supposedly the ‘best years’, and if I fail in my quest to make a (decent) living out of writing and directing my own feature films, than I would have wasted those years on nothing more than a pipe dream.

Looking back can be almost as dangerous as looking forward. Fear grips our paths towards the future, regret litters our paths behind us. All that we really have is the present day, and the hum-drum safety net of work, eat, and sleep. And yet, as I look back, I think to myself that it has been an all right decade, but something has to give soon to make it a really spectacular one…

One of the more popular type of posts on this blog, I note by my stats, are those dealing with the practical use of printers.

So, let it be known that today I completed the manual and installation of a new printer at our primary Circulation workstation.

We’d been using a Star SP542 dot-matrix receipt printer, as at the time we needed to get one, we were hoping to eventually get permission to print money receipts for fines (instead of expensive 19th century receipt books). State auditors insist on sequentially-numbered receipts (it’s a rule, period, no debate permitted, so no use telling me reasons not to do it). Thermal printing doesn’t hold up over time, so we needed receipts that would last if we did them for fines, etc.

Frankly, we’ve found the dot matrix to have cleaning problems — lots of cut paper scraps get into the works, and you have to remove the ribbon, then remove a plate and vacuum it out weekly to keep it from jamming up.

Anyway, since the money receipt printing has fallen through (don’t ask), we don’t need long-term printing. We switched to a Star TSP650 (aka 654 the cutter model) printer, which uses only thermal paper, no ribbon.

The manual is at http://libcat.uafortsmith.edu/screens/man_starTSP650printer.html and it covers the setup for use with Millennium Circulation.

Now, the printer driver either lets you do very short slips with no graphics, or — as we selected — 200mm long slips with a big logo at the top, that are actually easier for everyone to handle. Also, if somebody sticks them in the book pocket, it makes them easy to fish out.

Using 8 point font for legibility means the last digit of the year is cut off on each line. A smaller font becomes too hard to read. The actual date is printed in full at the top just under the logo, anyway, so the year should be obvious.

Since it doesn’t completely cut (“partial cut” meaning one little bit in the middle is left, so one tug will free it), the paper doesn’t leave little scraps, which should avoid a lot of cleaning problems. No ribbon.

The “receipt” selection (instead of 200mm length) just runs out paper forever, until you turn it off. Since the 200mm works well for us, we’ll stick with that for the time being.

We have under a month left until the end of the decade, and so how was it for you? Was it hell? Certainly if you look at world events we had major terrorist attacks in NY, Madrid, London, Mumbai and Bali littered amongst the multitude of events worldwide. We had massive natural disasters. The Tsunami and the 2005 hurricane season were the big natural disasters of the decade but let us also recall Cyclone Nargis, the Kashmir Earthquake. Bam in Iran and Sichaun in China also suffered from massive earthquakes. As a tail end note, Mozambique suffered from massive flooding at the beginning of the 2000’s .

Oh, and if you are in the west than look no further than the economic meltdown of the past two years. Plus we in the west elected some of the worst tyrants in recent history, who instigated more wars and suffering amongst the most destitute people on the globe. At least we are not in North Korea.

In the UK we seem to be quite happy to give over our hard won freedoms to governments and law advisors more interested in controlling the population instead of listening to it. So now we have CCTV up your backside (the cameras in my job can see me pick my nose), a new expensive compulsory ID Card system and a populace too scared to live because of the no-win no-fee parasites that bombard your cable television channels with cheap adverts, promising you the world (the money had to come from somewhere).

On a personal level we have also given up much of our individual freedom. Shackled by debt, the average UK resident is no better than the bonded labourers of the 19th century. Now striking has become a byword for treason despite the fact that is was here in the UK that led the industrial strike movement and the establishment of basic workers rights (we need more men like him).

And so, that’s it. The Noughties, the 2000’s, the beginning of the new Millennium and the 21st Century. Tomorrow, a more personal view…

Lisbeth Salander is a wanted woman. Two Millennium journalists about to expose the truth about sex trafficking in Sweden are murdered, and Salander’s prints are on the weapon. Her history of unpredictable and vengeful behaviour makes her an official danger to society – but no-one can find her. Mikael Blomkvist, editor-in-chief of Millennium, does not believe the police. Using all his magazine staff and resources to prove Salander’s innocence, Blomkvist also uncovers her terrible past, spent in criminally corrupt institutions. Yet Salander is more avenging angel than helpless victim. She may be an expert at staying out of sight – but she has ways of tracking down her most elusive enemies.

A slightly slow start to this, the second in the Larsson Millennium trilogy, but when it gets going it really takes off. Fast-paced and gripping it delivers on every count. Super stuff.

In their desperation to maintain the view that the church superseded Israel, Replacement Theologians have made all kinds of false claims respecting the land that God gave to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The popular view is to concede that the inheritance is the literal land of Canaan, but that the promises were fulfilled in Old Testament times. Joshua 21: 43-45 is often quoted as if that text sets the matter at rest.

However, we cannot forget that the land was promised to each of the patriarchs as a personal possession (see Genesis 13: 15; 26: 3; 28: 13; 35: 12). This promise was certainly never made good in their lifetime, for Stephen later affirmed that God “gave [Abraham] none inheritance in it, no not so much as to set his foot on: yet He promised that He would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child” (Acts 7: 5).

Paul also refers to land of promise as the country in which Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob sojourned, dwelling in tents (Hebrews 11: 9). From this it is evident that the patriarchs never received any fulfillment of the promise in their own lifetimes. The promise must therefore be made good in resurrection.

True, Paul declares that Abraham looked for “a city which hath foundations, whose builder and Maker is God” (Hebrews 11: 10). However, this same city was later seen, in prophetic vision, descending to earth (Rev. 21: 2). So there is no contradiction between the promise made to the patriarchs, and the ultimate realization of that promise as depicted in the New Testament.

Regardless of what we today may think, the early Christians certainly believed that the land promises would be fulfilled during the Millennium. Irenaeus writes: ”If, then, God promised [Abraham] the inheritance of the land, yet he did not receive it during all the time of his sojourn there, it must be, that together with his seed, that is, those who fear God and believe in Him, he shall receive it at the resurrection of the just” (Against Heresies, V. xxxii. 2).

What Moses saw from Nebo certainly confirms the fact that what God promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob was a literal alotment of land, and not a mere spiritual inheritance! It is our firm belief that what God promised will be made good; and that we, who receive blessings with Abraham will surely inherit the world (Romans 4: 15) and judge angels (1 Cor. 6: 3). In view of these promises, we await the time of our Lord’s return, with joy unspeakable.

These days I can’t help but feel like Frank Black, the tragic, glum-faced hero in Chris Carter’s classic TV series Millennium.

In the series, Frank is a retired FBI profiler obsessed with protecting his daughter Jordan from the world’s evils. In his mission to rid the planet of serial killers and mass murderers, he reluctantly joins The Millennium Group, a secret society of criminal investigators allied with the FBI, only to find out later that the group has been corrupted by the very evil it is fighting.

It is a depressing series, and it got canceled after three seasons — proof positive that even serial killer-obsessed America has only a certain level of tolerance for the deeply morbid and the utterly bleak.

If there’s one thing I learned about that program, it’s that the fight against evil is almost always a lost cause.

I remember a friend who justified his being a gun freak to me in 2001 by noting the number of nuts out there who can kill me or my loved ones just because they can and can get away with it, or at most get a mere slap-on-the-wrist courtesy of our inept justice system. His talk left me dumbstruck. If only I had a credit card back then, I would’ve gone straight to Hahn in Ali Mall for a Remington M597 after that conversation.

Why not? It’s better to go down fighting, as they say in war.

Every time I look at my family, I am gripped with the disturbing conclusion that we are indeed at the mercy of the Jason Ivlers and Andal Ampatuans of this world. That unarmed, we are nothing but clueless little mice in the same cage with the snake just waiting to be swallowed. Preys waiting for the predator.

Fight fire with fire. Something must be done to level the playing field.

I’ve a credit card now, and Cubao is just a ride away from where I live and work, and my head is full of gunpowder as I try to come to terms with the vicious reality outside growing more vicious with every passing day.

Suicide Bombing Al-Nisa (The Women) Sura 4: Verse 29 (Partial) “… And kill yourselves no

Suicide Bombing

Al-Nisa (The Women) Sura 4: Verse 29 (Partial)

“… And kill yourselves not, for God is truly Merciful to you.”

People who are driven to despair are thus reminded to have faith in God’s mercy in the hope that they may be relieved of their suffering. Since suicide is prohibited, anyone who tries to facilitate it, or acts as an accomplice, is also liable to a deterrent punishment that may be quantified by the court while taking into consideration the material circumstances of the case. Commentators have, moreover, drawn a five-point conclusion from this verse as follows:

1. the obvious meaning is that suicide is forbidden;

2. the text also stipulates that ‘you may not kill one another’ nor facilitate suicide;

3. one may not undertake a task which is likely to cause his own death, even if it be in lieu of a religious obligation;

4. no one should deprive himself of the necessities of life to the point of self-destruction; and

5. the text covers cases of self-destruction regardless of the manner in which it is done.

The manuals of Islamic law are silent on the issue of suicide bombing, a disturbing phenomenon of our time that became frequent in connection with Israeli-Palestinian conflict, especially when Israel unleashed a new wave of aggression on the street processions of unarmed Palestinian youth in 2000-1. The aftermath of 11 September 2001 and more recently the horrendous violence in Iraq and Afghanistan, added new dimensions to the incidence of suicide bombing among Muslims.

Suicide bombing in the name of Islam is a ’sociopolitical phenomenon, not a theological one’. And any long-term solution to the problem must also address the causes that have brought so much pain and hopelessness to many Muslim societies.

It would be simplistic to lump the Palestinian suicide bombing with Al-Qaedah terrorist activities. One can hardly deny the genuine suffering of the Palestinian people and legitimacy of their struggle against sustained Israeli brutalities. It would appear equally simplistic, however, to equate suicide bombing with martyrdom and jihad. This is because suicide bombing contravenes two fundamental principles of Islam: prohibition against suicide, and deliberate killing of non-combatants. The argument that proceeds over reciprocity and retaliation is also flawed by the involvement of innocent non-combatants in suicide bombing.

Those who have raised the issue of ‘collateral damage’ in this context have also exaggerated their case, simply because non-combatants are chosen as the direct target of suicide bombing. They are, as such, neither collateral nor incidental.

The Muslim fighter who is motivated by the spirit of jihad enters the battle, not with the intention of dying, but with the conviction that if he should die, it would be for reasons beyond his control. Martyrdom in Islam does not begin with suicidal intention, let alone the linkage of that intention with the killing of non-combatants.

To justify suicide bombing under the banner of retaliation, or as a form of jihad, is therefore questionable, simply because it begins on an erroneous note, which goes against the essence both of just retaliation and justified jihad.

So, di tengah ribut-ributn

A Single Blade of Grass’.

Last night I caught the start of the evening ITN news which is something that I don’t normally

Last night I caught the start of the evening ITN news which is something that I don’t normally do because I hate ITN with a passion. The reason for this being that it is pure tabloid journalism transferred onto TV. Are you interested in facts? Want to know what important events are happening in the world? Don’t watch ITN then, if you want a dumbed down version of events plus a load of unimportant crap that you would normally find in a trashy magazine presented and produced by halfwits who can’t get a job at a reputable news agency then ITN is for you.

OK, I may be being a bit harsh but twenty seconds into last night’s new broadcast they got my blood boiling again. The main story was quite rightly the horrendous floods in Cumbria. ITN’s headline? “The worst floods in Cockermouth for 1000 years“! Really? Is that a fact? That’s astounding! What is more astounding is that the people of Cockermouth have been meticulously recording river levels for a millennium. And that those records survive today. That’s quite unbelievable.

Actually what’s more unbelievable is that a supposedly reputable news agency are happy to put an untrue headline such as this in their news program. I’m sure that the producers had done their research and found that the Environment Agency had said something along the lines of “this type of weather is a once in a millennium event” which is complete bollocks in itself and anyone with half a brain would recognise it as such but the ITN team must have less than half a brain because they decided to take this generalisation literally.

Actually I think what annoys me more than the shoddy headline grabbing journalism of ITN is that there are enough people in the UK who watch this crap and blindly accept that what they say is the truth. Those floods of 1009 must have been quite something!

ISLAMIC METHOD OF SLAUGHTERING ANIMALS APPEARS RUTHLESS Why do Muslims slaughter the animal in a r

ISLAMIC METHOD OF SLAUGHTERING ANIMALS APPEARS RUTHLESS

Why do Muslims slaughter the animal in a ruthless manner by torturing it and slowly and painfully killing it?

The Islamic method of slaughtering animals, known as Zabiha has been the object of much criticism from a large number of people. One may consider the following points, which prove that the Zabiha method is not only humane but also scientifically the best:

1. Islamic method of slaughtering animal Zakkaytum is a verb derived from the root word Zakah (to purify). Its infinitive is Tazkiyah which means purification. The Islamic mode of slaughtering an animal requires the following conditions to be met:

a. Animal should be slaughtered with sharp object (knife) The animal has to be slaughtered with a sharp object (knife) and in a fast way so that the pain of slaughter is minimised.

b. Cut wind pipe, throat and vessels of neck Zabiha is an Arabic word which means ’slaughtered’. The ’slaughtering’ is to be done by cutting the throat, windpipe and the blood vessels in the neck causing the animal’s death without cutting the spinal cord.

c. Blood should be drained The blood has to be drained completely before the head is removed. The purpose is to drain out most of the blood which would serve as a good culture medium for micro organisms. The spinal cord must not be cut because the nerve fibres to the heart could be damaged during the process causing cardiac arrest, stagnating the blood in the blood vessels.

2. Blood is a good medium for germs and bacteria Blood is a good media of germs, bacteria, toxins, etc. Therefore the Muslim way of slaughtering is more hygienic as most of the blood containing germs, bacteria, toxins, etc. that are the cause of several diseases are eliminated.

3. Meat remains fresh for a longer time. Meat slaughtered by Islamic way remains fresh for a longer time due to deficiency of blood in the meat as compared to other methods of slaughtering.

4. Animal does not feel pain The swift cutting of vessels of the neck disconnects the flow of blood to the nerve of the brain responsible for pain. Thus the animal does not feel pain. While dying, the animal struggles, writhers, shakes and kicks, not due to pain, but due to the contraction and relaxation of the muscles defecient in blood and due to the flow of blood out of the body.

Distribuzione: BIM, Svezia, 2009

Conclusione: Consigliato.

Voto: 7

I ran into Joe Ullrich in October, four years after I had last seen him. He told me about some very difficult trials his family had endured, but he brightened as he mentioned the bountiful harvest God had blessed them with this year. Check out the size of those tomatoes in the photo! Joe felt God’s encouragement through this exceptional season of growth. Here is an excerpt of what he wrote:

Joe and Mary enjoy the bountiful harvest and the blessing of family.

Imagine needing a stepladder to care for and harvest your tomatoes. Imagine growing beets in your garden to almost the size of a volleyball and yet having their flesh sweet and tender. Imagine growing bell peppers nearly a foot long. Doesn’t that sound almost like stories we might hear in the Millennium, during the coming Kingdom of God? For us, God has blessed our garden produce greatly and has given us just the things I have spoken of this summer.

The tallest of our tomato plants were over eight feet tall before they began bountifully producing beautiful, juicy and tasty fruits of excellent quality. In one day Mary and I canned 50 quarts of juice. In our 30 plus years of gardening we have grown many beautiful tomato plants topping out at five to seven feet tall, but none came even close to growing as tall as the ones we have grown this year. At the time I am writing this, the tallest plant is nearly 11 feet tall.

Why did it produce so exceptionally well? Truly it was greatly blessed by God and has been used to greatly encourage us after some years of fiery trials that we have endured. The spiritual blessings that we have received greatly outweigh the physical blessings of the garden.

It was difficult not to break out in hymns and words of praise and thankfulness to God as we cared for and harvested from our garden. Our son told Mary he heard me talking to the tomato plants, but had he been close enough to hear me clearly, he would have known I was speaking to God, thanking Him and praising Him for His blessings.

I have told many that this was probably a “once in a lifetime” garden, but God only knows. Maybe next year will top this year. Maybe next year will be your year—you won’t know without trying. Gardening can be very rewarding, both physically and spiritually providing for our needs giving us a way of helping others. Growing plants helps us to better understand some of the scriptures. After all, our Father planted a garden eastward in Eden and gave Adam and Eve the opportunity to dress and keep it.
