One good thing about the current sub-zero weather is that I couldn’t go to the cinema last night to see Avatar in 3D (at Peckham, so it’s only £2.99 on a Tuesday) because I was scared I might not be able to get back – particularly following the trauma of Monday night, trying to get home, slightly the worse for wear following my departmental Christmas meal and watching the departures board at Charing Cross as every train on it was either cancelled or delayed (sometimes both!)

I left the pub at about 9.30 and walked in the front door at about 12.30.

But I was saying one good thing about the weather is that because I couldn’t go to the cinema last night I stayed in and finally finished Millie’s Christmas present, a book called Millie and the Princess of the Moon. The Lovely Melanie, who works in publishing so has final say on such matters, has pronounced it acceptable – excellent, even – which is extremely gratifying given the amount of time I’ve spent on the thing (about 20 hours, give or take an hour or two).

I did the same thing last year, write, illustrate and make the whole thing, to produce a masterpiece called Millie In The Woods which has, gratifyingly, become an occasional bedtime favourite. So I decided to do the same again – except that this year I forgot that Millie is a bit older and so needs a story correspondingly longer and more complex.

But Millie and the Princess of the Moon is finally finished, which means I can go out for a quiet drink with friends tonight safe in the knowledge that my work as a father is complete. At least for this year – the Lovely Melanie has pointed out that to be scrupulously fair I need to write a book for Amber next year, and that’s assuming Millie doesn’t ask for another one!

She’s the short form of a timeless classic.

Thanks to Laura for suggesting Maisie as Name of the Day.

Laura originally suggested the spelling Maizie. Along with Maisy, it’s a variant you’ll spot from time to time. But it’s Maisie that currently ranks in the UK Top 100 and could follow other British imports to the US.

Maisie comes to us from Margaret, one of those classic appellations worn by saints, queens and many common folk, too. So many women were called Margaret that a raft of nicknames developed over the years. Maisie seems like a sharp departure, until you consider that she’s Scottish in origin – and the Scottish form of Margaret is Mairead.

Famous Maisies are few, and they’re not always wearing it as a nickname. They’re overwhelmingly fictional:

Henry James’ 1897 novel What Maisie Knew chronicles Maisie Farange’s early years. Her parents divorce and generally behave badly. By her teenage years, Maisie is easily the most mature character in the tale;

Pint-sized actress Maisie Smith played a young future Queen Elizabeth I in The Other Boleyn Girl and now appears on EastEnders;

Maisie Wylde is a relatively new character on UK soap opera Emmerdale;

Maisy Mouse stars in a series of children’s picture books, with friends like Tallulah the Baby Chicken. A show based on the books aired on Nick Jr.;

Dr. Seuss changed up the spelling for his character in Daisy-Head Mayzie, about a schoolgirl who sprouts a yellow flower from his head. It was published posthumously, in 1995.

But the best known Maisie was Ann Sothern’s character, born on the big screen and later given her own radio show. Mary Anastasia O’Connor went by the stage name Maisie Ravier. An aspiring burlesque dancer, Brooklyn-dwelling Maisie never quite got her big break. But Maisie made Sothern a star.

The first Maisie film debuted in 1939. Several sequels followed in the 1940s, then a CBS radio program called The Adventures of Maisie. If you’ve ever uttered the phrase “Likewise, I’m sure,” then you’ve channeled Maisie Ravier.

While she’s part of the white hot diminutive-trend in the UK – Evie, Millie, Lexi/Lexie, Rosie and Tilly all keep her company in their 2008 Top 100 – she’s never charted in the US Top 1000. That’s not to say there’s no such thing as an American Maisie. There are plenty in the census records. But in the US, odds are good that Maisie isn’t on the birth certificate.

For an American parent in 2009, the challenge is simple: a nickname for what? Margaret is more likely to be called Maggie. Mairead – pronounced MAH raid – isn’t terribly accessible on this side of the Atlantic. And while you could put lots of things on the birth certificate, from Mary Sarah to Marissa, none of them lead logically to Maisie.

Perhaps that’s why she’s gaining appeal as a stand-alone name. And while there’s a chance that Maisie sounds better on a comedienne than a brain surgeon, just like Molly and Sadie have shed their roots as nicknames, Maisie might stand on her own, too.

I don’t think there is a cuter Christmas card out there this year. Millie takes the prize. But on the other hand, every parent believes that to be true about their offspring.

Anyway, I wish you all a wonderful holiday season with your family and friends. May your house be filled with laughter and gratitude and the mouth-watering smell of cookies.

Thank you for being a part of my life. You have helped make this year one of the best ones yet!

Running different productions of the same musical within a relatively short period of time inevitabl

Running different productions of the same musical within a relatively short period of time inevitably invites comparisons, for better or for worse. Having seen the TUTS production of Millie half a dozen times this past summer, I’m familiar with both the strengths and the weaknesses of the book and score. I had such high hopes for Gateway Theatre’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie. On paper it shows so much promise, but ultimately falls short.

The cast of Gateway's Thoroughly Modern Millie.

There is a lot to like about this production. Choreographer Kennith Overbey has charged the dance numbers with an intense energy that truly carries the show. The freneticism of the love-wearied office pool as they tap out their frustrations in “Forget About the Boy,” was almost enough to make me forget some of the other flaws in this show.

Overbey makes excellent use of the incredibly strong male and female choruses. Among the standouts are Georgia Swinton, Damon Jang, Dimitrios Stephanoy, Meagan Ekelund and Doran Satanove. There is more than a hint of sex appeal in the alcohol-infused “The Nutty Cracker Suite,” which in less capable hands could have easily been boring and hackneyed. That same rawness is also welcomely present in the male chorus in “Long as I’m Here with You.”

The ten-piece orchestra is at the top of its game and brings the jazzy score to life, with what seems like minimal effort. Musical theatre companies around town should take note: cutting back on the size of pit orchestras and live accompaniment can exact a heavy toll on your show. That richness of sound can’t be replicated by other means.

Lauren Bowler (The Producers, Arts Club) is a strong actress and singer, but doesn’t come off as terribly likeable in the title role of Millie Dillmount. Her characterisation played like it was from a more serious show, not the one she was in.

Diana Kaarina (Thoroughly Modern Millie, TUTS) was reliably consistent in the role of Miss Dorothy, a role she honed in the US national tour of Thoroughly Modern Millie. I found myself wishing that Kaarina had been cast as Millie here, a role she completely owned at TUTS this summer.

Denis Simpson plays wealthy socialite and songstress Muzzy Van Hossmere in what appears to be incredibly bad whiteface. I was hoping for something special in Simpson’s two musical performances “Only in New York” and “Long as I’m Here with You,” and I was still waiting when the final curtain fell. The fault doesn’t lie with Simpson, but with the uninspired staging consisting of simply facing the audience head-on with limited movement and singing, à la high school.

I’ve seen Simpson dance and sing enough times to know that this wasn’t a case of a director staging around a performer’s weak spots. Whatever the reasoning behind this creative decision, the poor direction in these numbers pulled down the show’s energy.

The same barebones approach to staging also hurt the comedic number “They Don’t Know.” As the villainous Mrs. Meers, Irene Karas’ accent careered perilously close to the edge and her dragon lady was missing some needed bluster.

Mat Baker’s vocals and dancing were well-suited to the role of Jimmy Smith, but was otherwise bland and not particularly charismatic. On the other hand, Gaelan Beatty was perfectly charming as the somewhat pompous Trevor Graydon.

Jen Darbellay’s costumes are colourful and eye-catching, though a bit more variety would have been welcome. The scale of Drew Facey’s set properly conveys the height of the New York cityscape without dwarfing the actors.

All of the technical elements are there, but the show lacks heart. It should be full of humour and fun, but the quick pace of this staging seems to gloss over many of the best lines and scenes. That being said, the energetic choreography, top-notch orchestra, and strong chorus alone make Thoroughly Modern Millie worth the price of admission.

Gateway Theatre presents Thoroughly Modern Millie until January 3, 2010 at the Gateway Theatre, 6500 Gilbert Road, Richmond. Tickets are available online or by phone at 604-270-1812.

Sorry about the fairly dismal quality of the pictures, they were taken with my iPhone, which isn’t the best camera I’ve ever owned.

The first picture is from Bexley Library yesterday, when they invited all the local children to help decorate their tree – with help from a very special guest, as you can see.

The second picture is from Hurst Primary School (Millie’s alma mater) who had their Christmas Bazaar yesterday afternoon.

After dithering about whether to get her face painted as Spider-Man, a butterfly or Father Christmas, Millie finally went for a Christmas Tree – as you can see.

And the Lovely Melanie manned the “Snag A Cracker Using A Hook On A Stick To Win A Cheap Prize” stall. It was extremely busy at the Bazaar, so hopefully the PTA’s coffer’s are now full for another year!

Anyway, yes, erm – quick, tidy up that bit of code over there – check the spelling and grammar – make sure any images we’re using aren’t copyrighted – remove the swearing from that last political bit… Ooh, it’s like parents popping round unexpectedly when you were a student!

Ahem.

Yes, so, um… Where was I?

That’s right – I was going to tell you about my legs. They’re a bit stiff from the frantic uphill powerwalking I did this morning with a no-longer-so-little Millie on my shoulders.

We left the house really bright and early this morning. AmberG needed dropping at nursery first, as always, but I was hoping that if we had enough time after that Millie and I could stay on the bus all the way to Bexley where the Post Office depot have been jealously guarding a parcel of mine as though it were the holy grail..

And we were initially doing so well! Two girls and myself up, dressed, fed, teeth cleaned, shoes hats gloves scarves coats – all on, grab Millie’s book bag and packed lunch, Amber into buggy, out of house to bus stop, bus to Sidcup comes quickly, get into nursery, Amber out of buggy, shoes hat gloves scarf coat off, fold buggy up, unfold buggy and get Millie’s book bag and packed lunch out, kiss Amber goodbye, make Millie kiss Amber goodbye and go and wait for bus towards Bexley where Millie’s school is.

Bus takes a long time to arrive.

Bus arrives, Millie and I get on and bus speeds off down the hill.

I get called a “dude” by some schoolgirls whilst peeling a satsuma for Millie..

SCHOOLGIRL #1: I can smell oranges.

SCHOOLGIRL #2: It’s that dude eating an orange.

I also take a look at my phone and have a missed call from an unknown number. Bah!

Phone rings. It’s from an unknown number. No, actually it’s not an unknown number, it’s Amber’s nursery. Ah, jeez, I think, what can possibly have happened to her in 15 minutes??

Have we forgotten anything? asks Michelle from nursery.

I do a quick inventory: one daughter with me, one at nursery. No, I say confidently.

Millie’s book bag and lunch? asks Michelle.

I look at Millie. Millie looks at me. Millie, where’s your book bag and packed lunch?

Millie does a wonderful pantomime of looking all around the bus seat then looks up at me, eyes wide, mouth open.

The inside of my brain briefly turns into the Journey Planner on the Transport for London website, and I sigh upon realising the only way to get back to nursery in time is to get off the bus now and walk the quarter of a mile or so back up the hill with Millie on my shoulders and that we are not going to be able to get to the Post Office in Bexley unless a giant eagle swoops down, picks us both up and flies us there.

I check the sky, just in case… No.

Good Morning BEEEEE!
It’s nice to be MOW in winter – and not being on the training ship. They say it’s important we won’t get too soft. So our cabins aren’t as luxurious as one could wish for. Well, it’s all for a good purpose I hope. After all – having gone through OneBBO’s raw food mania makes me hard enough for almost everything waaaaaah
Furazone is quiet. Knowing that OneBBO is always in the wrong I can understand them partially… but on the other hand her reviews are pretty important because they demonstrate her warped mind quite clearly. That’s probably why they keep them back: Too embarrassing for the Queen of the Castle.
My song is “My funny valentine”. During the pre-X-mas period we additionally get some Xmas songs to hear. If there is time of course.
Yours
Millie the nautical mush

Ahoy there Millie,
Must be nice for you to have a bit of shore leave, sitting at my desk instead of dangling from a mast in a force 10 gale in the Bay of Bearletto.
Although the conditions on your training ship are relatively simple, as befits a training ship of the Royal Fleet, I do hope they are not “unzumutbar”, they aren’t meant to be prison ships after all. As Commander in Chief of the Forest Navy I am scheduled to do a tour of inspection of the Royal Fleet next year and on that occasion I would be interested to hear any suggestions for improvement. O course, five star cuisine, on-board hairdresser salons (“Crunchible Permament Waves”?), heated bath rails and flowery curtains may be a bit difficult to get past the old sea bears at the Admiralty, but I’ll see what can be done.
Well, I think it would be nice if we could continue our discussions of nautical history and perhaps continue building out wooden model of the “H.M.S. Sylvana”, on which if I remember rightly we had just started fitting the first deck the last time we stopped…. would that be about 8 months ago?
And now for a cup of grog…
Yours
Beeeeeeeeeeee

Hello, world! Millie the basset hound here. My mom Rebecca has been unplugged this weekend, and she’s enjoying it so much that she decided to stay lazy today and let me write her Sunday Salon post. And Thank goodness for that. I’ve heard that she tells some embarrassing stories about me, and it’s time I set the record straight.

This is me.

I’m cute. I’m thoughtful. I can actually stand still for a picture every now and then. So what if I spill my kibble all over the floor and bark at it before I eat it?

But I’m even cute when I’m barking. See?

You’d be barking too if you saw all of the delicious food that has come and gone through my house this weekend. My parents have barely let me lay a paw on it!

But enough about me. I’m supposed to be telling you about our Thanksgiving weekend. Now, as much as I can figure, Thanksgiving is just a good excuse to have some of your peeps visit and make a ton of the aforementioned delicious food (and torture little basset hounds by forcing them to smell all of those wonderful smells and keeping the food just out of reach on the counter).

On Wednesday, my mom and Dad drove up to Washington D.C. to pick up Rebecca’s parents. I call them Grandma Kaye and Pookie. While they were making the long drive, I went over to my neighbor’s house for playtime with my two best friends Hazel and Bean. My mom kept saying something about wanting me to be tired and mellow by the time all of our company arrived, and man did her plan ever work! I ran around and barked and played chase and barked some more, and then I wrestled Hazel to the ground a few times. She’s part hound dog like me, but she doesn’t have my skills.

Oh, but I digress.

So, Grandma Kaye and Pookie came to visit, and that made me really happy because Pookie is just about the easiest mark I’ve ever seen. He basically fell in love with me the first time we met, and ever since then I’ve been batting my droopy eyes at him and getting nibbles of tasty food in return. My mom and dad pretend to be upset about it, but I can tell they think it’s cute too. I mean, who can resist this face?

After I greeted my grandparents (they have a hound dog named Maggie, but she didn’t come to visit), Rebecca’s sister and her fiance came to my house, and they brought my cousin Angus. He’s a giant yellow lab, and even though he’s a few years older than me, he’s still pretty good at chasing after tennis balls and playing tug-of-war with my big rawhide bone. He sleeps a lot, and he tries to steal my food, but I love him anyway, and I was so proud to show him off when we all went on a walk together Thursday morning.

But getting to Thursday morning was an adventure because I decided to wake up in the middle of the night Wednesday night and check on all of my visitors. Mom and Dad told them to keep their bedroom doors closed so I couldn’t barge in, but they didn’t close them tightly enough….so at 2am, I tried to jump in bed with Grandma Kaye and Pookie, but my mom caught me. So then I tried to sneak upstairs to visit Angus, but my mom caught me again! Really, I just like to make her run around in her underwear in the middle of the night.

Oh, I digressed again, didn’t I? I’m sorry. I get distracted easily, and there are squirrels running around in my yard. I have to keep them in check. Plus, my brain’s the size of a walnut. What can you do?

Anyway, everyone spent most of the day on Thursday cooking up yummy side dishes and desserts, so I spent most of the day sitting on the kitchen floor just wishing and hoping and thinking and praying for a few morsels to fall my way. Then they all went over to my dad’s brother’s house and left Angus and me here all by ourselves! We felt really left out, but it turned out that they brought home leftovers, and my dad made us each a little plate! So I had a nibble of turkey, and a nibble of mashed potatoes, and a nibble of sweet potatos, and even a nibble of pumpkin pie for dessert! I never get to eat people food, so it was a big treat.

And I loved every minute of it…..until Angus started farting. Do you have any idea how awful it is to smell big dog farts with a nose as powerful as mine?

On Friday, I lazed around the house while my mom and Grandma Kaye went shopping (but not crazy early like some of those peeps I saw on TV), and yesterday I held down the fort (whatever that means) while my mom and dad drove my grandparents back to the airport in D.C. They said traffic was really bad, and they were gone a long time. They looked very tired when they came home!

So this morning we’ve been pretty lazy, but that’s not really different from any Sunday around here. Mom and Dad will wear their PJs all day, and we’ll all take a nap together on the couch this afternoon, and Mom will read books while Dad watches football. They’ll probably eat leftovers for dinner tonight and maybe watch a movie or something. I don’t really care what they do as long as I get to be cozied up in the middle of them. Or snuggled in my armchair with my favorite afghan.

It’s almost time for lunch now, so I have to go muster up the energy to beat the fight out of my kibble. Before I go, my mom wanted me to show you our new family picture:

Thought I should end on a good note in case that little goat I’ve been hearing about comes by to check me out. Apparently our moms are cooking up some kind of interview or something.

Thanks for letting me visit your Sunday Salon. I hope you’ve all had a wonderful weekend. Now that I’ve said my how-do’s, I’m off to resume my lazy Sunday. Watch out, kibble….here I come!

I’ll admit it. I would never, in a month of Sundays, put Sadie on my daughter’s birth c

I’ll admit it. I would never, in a month of Sundays, put Sadie on my daughter’s birth certificate. It would be Sarah, thanks very much, just in case she grows up to run for office or take up brain surgery or otherwise wants to sound like a mature, serious adult.

I’m not necessarily in the majority. And I’m not necessarily right, either. Plenty of women named Julie and Jodie have turned out just fine. And plenty of Sarah/Sadies are irritated at having to constantly explain that yes, Sadie is a nickname for Sarah.

So for your consideration, I’ve pulled together a list of ends-in-ie-names just might stand on their own.

I’m excluding choices like Katie and Maggie - names easily connected to formal versions, as well as feminizations like Billie and Charlie. And if it more commonly ends in -y, you won’t find it here – so no Mollie, Lillie or Lucie.

That still leaves bunches of names:

Arlie – Arline started out as a well-born child kidnapped by gypsies in a nineteenth century opera, but today she’s the outdated Arlene. Arlie might be a short form, or she may related to a surname. Either way, she sounds fresher than the -een ending original.

Birdie – Lady Bird was worn in the White House. Actress Busy Phillips bestowed this avian appellation on her daughter. While there are more subtle ways to evoke the finely feathered, Birdie isn’t quite unthinkable.

Bonnie – Worn by the ill-fated daughter of Rhett and Scarlett in Gone With the Wind – who was actually named Eugenie Victoria. She means pretty – and she is just that.

Callie – If Kelly and Kaylee are independent given names for girls, why not Callie? She’s also a possible nickname for classics like Caroline and Charlotte, as well as the less-expected Calla, Calista or Calliope.

Dessie – In Ireland, Dessie is a nickname for Desmond – and thus, exclusively masculine. In the US, it sounds more like a riff on Bessie.

Dulcie – She’s sweet – literally, from the Latin dulcis. Longer form Dulcinea conjures up the Judybats, Toad the Wet Sprocket and Don Quixote – though the literary Dulcinea was actually named Aldonza.

Erie – Eir was a Norse goddess; Éire, a Celtic one – she lent her name to Ireland. Eiry is a Welsh girl’s name – related names abound, all meaning snow. Erie may be linked to any or none of the above, and could rhyme with fairy, or have a totally other pronunciation.

Hattie – You might put Harriet or Henrietta on the birth certificate, but millinery references aside, Hattie has some style.

Hettie – Another possibility for Henrietta, as well as Hester or Hestia.

Lettie – Formal name options include the salad-esque Lettice, or the lacy Letitia. If Victorian valentine isn’t your style, Lettie might appeal.

Lindie – Lucky Lindy was aviator Charles Lindbergh’s nickname. The Lindy Hop was a swing-era dance craze named in his honor. Linda is a Baby Boomer – as are elaborations like Melinda and Belinda. But today, Lindie might work as a nickname for hippie chic tree name Linden – or on her own.

Lottie – Charlotte is in the US Top 100 and rising, but it seems as very few Charlottes are answering to this nickname – so far.

Maisie – Like Maggie, she could be a diminutive form of Margaret, via the Scottish Mairead. But if Daisy stands on her own, maybe Maisie does, too.

Millie – Mildred might be too dowdy to ever make a comeback, but Millie is Thoroughly Modern. She’s also a spunky nickname for the super-sweet Millicent.

Minnie – Yes, there’s the mouse. But there’s also the actress – who was actually born Amelia Fiona Driver.

Tillie – Matilda is ever so fashion forward. Short form Tilda brings to mind the actress. Then there’s Tillie – perhaps a bit too cute, but possibly wearable on her own.

Trudie – It’s hard to imagine naming a daughter Gertrude. But Trudie seems like a logical sister for Sadie – spunky, retro and not too flimsy to stand on her own.

Zadie – If Sadie stands along, why not her zippy cousin? The z-to-s switch has worked out just fine for novelist Zadie Smith.

Zelie – There have definitely been women named Zelie, but her exact origins are unclear, though some link her to the French Zéline and she brings to mind the Yiddish Zelig.

I could go on – there’s Winnie and Elsie, Flossie and Roxie. But I’ll stop here and just ask: would you consider a short, ends-in-ie name for a daughter? And if so, would you put it on her birth certificate or opt for a more formal version?
