Nichts neues, alles bekannt. Aber bitte nicht vergessen.

At first, I didn’t know what to make of this short novel (128 pp, but small type, probably clocking in @ 40K words). It opens with a wealthy playboy, Al Ward, spotting a blonde bombshell hitch-hiking (shades of The Lady is a Lush), and crashing his car, then taking the girl into town in a cab and renting a hotel room where he gets her drunk and has his way with her. He refuses to use a condom and when she says she’s worried about getting pregnant, he says he doesn’t care, and he doesn’t.

Al Ward is one of the richest men in the nation, age 31, tall, having inherited Ward Labs, a major pharmacuetical company that processes a birth control pill (all female employees get it for free), pain killers, etc. — think Phizer of the 60s. His parents died in an accident and he became head of a company, with little experience. He also owns a lot of small companies with international interest.

This is so unlike your typical Hitt setting and (anti)hero — Hitt’s characters are broke, in debt, poor, blue collar workers, not a version of Bruce Wayne. But as I read more, I realized Hitt is using Ward as a contrast to the everyday people around him — such as the girl he pciks up, Amy, basically a hillbilly who has left her horrid shack home where her father pimped her and her sister out for money, and keeps her mother….

constantly pregnant.

Ward likes to drink in dinky dirty bars; he likes to talk to and be around working class men who don’t know who he is. He is sick of people hitting him up for money. He likes to bed bar girls.

He also likes to bed the wives of men who work for him, threatening the women that he will fire their husbands if they don’t give in. His own wife, Betty, is frigid and distant, depressed from a miscarriage a year back, a baby he didn’t even want.

He’s been having an extended affair with Lena Carter, the wife of his top exec, Jim Cater. He has gotten Lena pregnant and gives her $5K to take a vacation, get an abortion, stay away for a while. She dies from the botched abortion (this happens a lot in 60s sleaze books, these illegal abortions by shady doctors).

The issue of pregnancy is a strong element — the birth control pills Ward Labs makes, the loss of a baby, abortion, Amy’s mother, Ward’s never taking precautions when he beds women.

Hitt uses dialogue and Ward’s musings to make political statements on socialism, taxes, medical insurance, and wages — a sub-plot is a union boss threatening a strike if Ward doesn’t initiate a profit sharing plan for employees.

On the cover, it says this is a sequel to Abnormal Norma. I have not read that one. Also, the image on the cover shows a man peeping in on two women, but there is no peeper in this book, like there was the peeper sub-plot in Taboo Thrills/Warped Woman/Wilma’s Wants.

This has also been reprinted as I Need a Man! Have not seen that one — there are also some obscure Hitts from Novel I seek: Perverted Doctors, American Sodom, and Cherry.

Jeff Ellis reviewed Frustrated Females! on his blog earlier this year. I will quote him in full, as he points out similar issues:

When I wasn’t watching movies, I made the time to read a book today. The book in question was by Orrie Hitt and was entitled Frustrated Females. The book was originally published in 1962 by Novel Books, Inc. According to the front cover, Frustrated Females is a sequal to Abnormal Norma and Orrie Hitt is “the one and only who has sold over 10 million paperbacks.”

The cover says that this was a “50cent Novel Book.” When I bought it earlier today, it cost me twenty dollars. That may seem like a lot to pay for a 128-page paperback by an obscure author. However, to me, an author like Orrie Hitt is not obscure. To me, an author like Orrie Hitt is a hero and an inspiration.

It features a black-and-white photograph of a man staring through a window. On the other side of that window are two women. The one in the foreground wear a sheer nightie while the one in the background is in the process of pulling her blouse over her head and exposing her pristinely white bra. There are two notable things about this image. First off, the woman in the background appears to have been clipped out of another picture and then pasted into the current scene. Secondly, there is no scene in Frustrated Females that corresponds with this image. Instead, the image appears to correspond with the plot of Unnatural Urge, another Hitt novel, also from 1962, that deals with a peeping tom in upstate New York.

The cover tells us that Frustrated Females is “For Adults.” And, indeed, by the standards of 1962, it probably was. Now, there is something rather admirable about the lengths that Hitt goes to describe sexual activity without actually describing sexual activity. There is also something rather touching about the fact that this “adult” paperback contains only one instance of profanity (“Godammit!” someone exclaims at one point) and, when attempting to convey that are certain setting is sleazy, tells us that someone had written “four-letter words” on the walls but refuses to go so far as to specify what any of those words might actually be,

The cover tells us that Frustrated Females is the “story of Lena — whose husband wasn’t enough for her — and Amy — who nothing was ever enough for!” It is not surprising to note that the only thing accurate about that blurb is that the novel features a character named Lena and a character named Amy. This is not meant to be a criticism, however. That blurb — and the fact that, ultimately, it has next to nothing to do with the actual content of the book — neatly represents everything that makes true pulp fiction such a joy to experience.

The book’s plot actually centers around Al Ward, a ruthless, sociopathic millionaire who owns a company that manufactures and sells birth control pills. As his wife refuses to sleep with him, Al responds by sleeping with apparently every other woman on the planet, including Lena and Amy. Lena ends up dying as the result of a botched abortion, Amy eventually leaves Al for a good and honest cop named Bert (perhaps he was named for the cop Ward Bond played in It’s a Wonderful Life), and Al ends up allowing a horrifically disfigured union boss to take advantage of his drunken wife. Along the way, Al also flirts with communism before coming to his senses and seeking redemption by confessing to a murder that he did not commit. The feeling one gets from reading the book is that Hitt pretty much made it up as he went along. This makes it all the more remarkable that it’s actually a rather well-written, entertaining book. The characters are surprisingly memorable (Al Ward is so incredibly amoral that it’s hard not to like him just a little), the hard-boiled dialogue suggests that Hitt was a bit more self-aware and witty than most mainstream readers would allow themselves to believe, and the plot is just absurd enough to hold your interest. Plus, I’m usually wary of mixing ideology and fiction but Hitt makes about as persuasive a case for the Libertarian political philosophy as I’ve ever read. In many ways, Frustrated Females is almost a readable version of The Fountainhead. Forget Ayn Rand. Give me Orrie Hitt!

Is Frusrated Females! a good read? It is. Like the amoral Joy in Love Princess, amoral Al Ward gets his in the end, for all his sins and crimes, so this works as both political and moral tale.

Indeed — fuck Ayn Rand, Orrie rulez, even for the lulz.

CNN.com/US

Editor’s note: Peter Bregman is chief executive of Bregman Partners, Inc., a global management consulting firm, and the author of “Point B: A Short Guide to Leading a Big Change“.

He writes a weekly column, How We Work, for HarvardBusiness.org.

Peter Bregman says the best strategy in the downturn may be to create your own work. NEW YORK (CNN) — Madame Alexander was one of the great innovators in the doll industry. According to the company that bears her name, she made the first doll with moving eyelids, the first doll based on a licensed character (Scarlett O’Hara from Gone with the Wind), the first doll fashioned after a living person (Queen Elizabeth) and many others. But what’s most interesting is how and why the company got started. Beatrice Alexander’s father owned the first doll “hospital” in New York City, where broken porcelain dolls were sent to be repaired. That got her thinking. Maybe porcelain wasn’t the best material for a doll. So she sat around her kitchen table with her four sisters, and they started a business sewing dolls out of cloth. Theirs were not the only cloth dolls (Raggedy Anne was already popular), but they created a Red Cross doll, a smart choice so soon after World War I. She put all the dolls in a big suitcase and lugged them around to local mom and pop stores where she made small sales.

No bank would lend to her; she was a 20-something woman in the early 1900s, a poor risk. So she scraped together what she could and just started. Eventually, she found someone who was willing to loan her $1,600, which she paid back in half the time she was allotted.

After four years of dragging that suitcase door to door, she got her first big break: a big sale to FAO Schwarz.

Forbes magazine recently profiled the most popular toys of the past 100 years, and Madame Alexander topped the list from the 1920s. It beat the yo-yo.

There’s a lesson here for us. We’ve lost 4.4 million jobs since the economic mess started. And many of those jobs aren’t coming back. John Silvia, chief economist at Wachovia, told The New York Times, “There are going to be fewer stores, fewer factories, fewer financial services operations. Firms are making strategic decisions that they don’t want to be in their businesses.”

At this point, outplacement is just a bad bet. There is no place to be placed. Companies aren’t hiring, they’re firing.

And when eventually they do emerge from this recession, those companies that are still solvent won’t rehire to previous levels. Over the years, companies have gotten leaner as employees have gotten more productive. And they won’t rehire as much when times improve because they’ll want to keep their profit margins high. It’s quite possible that the age of big business tending to thousands of workers is coming to a close.

Looking for a job might make you feel better, but it won’t pay your mortgage. Don’t waste your time looking for a job that isn’t there.

There is another way. It’s the great opportunity of our time. For many people, it’s the only one. And it might actually make you happier than you were at the old job.

Start a business.

Wait, hold on. Before you get all angry at how out of touch I am, hear me out.

In a New York Times article, “Weary of Looking for Work, Some Create Their Own,” Ryan Kuder who started a Web design company after unsuccessfully looking for work for months said, “It’s probably easier right now to find a problem, solve it and charge people than it is to find a job.”

Easier doesn’t mean easy or painless. Any way you cut it, these are terrifying times we live in. And starting a company is a risky proposition. But this is one time when looking for a job might be riskier.

A friend of mine, Ben Dubrovsky, recently laid off from his technology job in Boston, Massachusetts, shared with me an idea he’s trying at his local synagogue. He’s pulling a group of people together to brainstorm business ideas that leverage their skills, talents, passions and experience.

“We’re not looking for a trillion dollar return. We’re looking for sustainable employment. Jobs that will give people an ongoing living, not companies as a vehicle for creating empires,” he said to me.

Then they’ll look to their synagogue community for advice, contacts or investment. Perhaps even a synagogue-based micro-finance bank where small loans could help start these businesses — businesses driven by passion.

Brilliant. Ben’s idea can translate to any community where people trust and care for each other. There are an estimated 400,000 churches in the United States.

Imagine if each one could generate 10 jobs; that would be 4,000,000 jobs — roughly the same number that President Obama is looking for out of the stimulus at a fraction of the cost. If you think that’s unrealistic, imagine we got half that. Or even a quarter. Insane? Maybe. But it just might work.

Don’t wait until you come up with the perfect idea.

You’ll be better off if you work out the kinks as you face them. Just get started. And this is the perfect time to start a new business. Marketing costs are way down because of the Internet and less competition. And as I wrote in a recent article about the new economy, small companies are replacing big ones because we trust people more than companies.

Just ask Howie Jacobson, author of “Adwords for Dummies,” who started his Internet marketing business during the last downturn.

He told me the entrepreneurs he knows all seem to be doing pretty well in this economy. They don’t have huge infrastructures to support. They don’t need to sell a million widgets just to stay in business. They’re comfortable with modest profits that sustain their lifestyles. iReport.com: How are you surviving in this economy?

Madame Alexander had a wise model for finding work. She started a business doing work she loved, with people she loved, solving a problem others were willing to pay money to have solved. It was a small company that took very little investment but gave her and others meaningful, sustainable work.

In other words, start a business in your kitchen with your sisters.

Blog Posted by Singapore ’s Youngest Millionaire

By Adam Khoo |

Some of you may already know that I travel around the region pretty frequently, having to visit and conduct seminars at my offices in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Suzhou (China). I am in the airport almost every other week so I get to bump into many people who have attended my seminars or have read my books.

Recently, someone came up to me on a plane to KL and looked rather shocked.. He asked, ‘How come a millionaire like you is travelling economy?’ My reply was, ‘That’s why I am a millionaire. ‘ He still looked pretty confused. This again confirms that greatest lie ever told about wealth (which I wrote about in my latest book ‘Secrets of Self Made Millionaires’ ). Many people have been brainwashed to think that millionaires have to wear Gucci, Hugo Boss, Rolex, and sit in first class in air travel. This is why so many people never become rich because the moment that earn more money, they think that it is only natural that they spend more, putting them back to square one.

The truth is that most self-made millionaires are frugal and only spend on what is necessary and of value. That is why they are able to accumulate and multiply their wealth so much faster. Over the last 7 years, I have saved about 80% of my income while today I save only about 60% (because I have my wife, mother in law, 2 maids, 2 kids, etc. to support). Still, it is way above most people who save 10% of their income (if they are lucky). I refuse to buy a first class ticket or to buy a $300 shirt because I think that it is a complete waste of money. However, I happily pay $1,300 to send my 2-year old daughter to Julia Gabriel Speech and Drama without thinking twice.

When I joined the YEO (Young Entrepreneur’ s Organization) a few years back (YEO is an exclusive club open to those who are under 40 and make over $1m a year in their own business) I discovered that those who were self-made thought like me. Many of them with net worths well over $5m, travelled economy class and some even drove Toyotas and Nissans (not Audis, Mercs, BMWs).

I noticed that it was only those who never had to work hard to build their own wealth (there were also a few ministers’ and tycoons’ sons in the club) who spent like there was no tomorrow. Somehow, when you did not have to build everything from scratch, you do not really value money. This is precisely the reason why a family’s wealth(no matter how much) rarely lasts past the third generation. Thank God my rich dad (oh no! I sound like Kiyosaki) foresaw this terrible possibility and refused to give me a cent to start my business.

Then some people ask me, ‘What is the point in making so much money if you don’t enjoy it?’ The thing is that I don’t really find happiness in buying branded clothes, jewellery or sitting first class. Even if buying something makes me happy it is only for a while, it does not last. Material happiness never lasts, it just gives you a quick fix. After a while you feel lousy again and have to buy the next thing which you think will make you happy. I always think that if you need material things to make you happy, then you live a pretty sad and unfulfilled life.

Instead, what make ME happy is when I see my children laughing and playing and learning so fast. What makes me happy is when I see by companies and trainers reaching more and more people every year in so many more countries. What makes me really happy is when I read all the emails about how my books and seminars have touched and inspired someone’s life. What makes me really happy is reading all your wonderful posts about how this BLOG is inspiring you. This happiness makes me feel really good for a long time, much much more than what a Rolex would do for me.

I think the point I want to put across is that happiness must come from doing your life’s work (be in teaching, building homes, designing, trading, winning tournaments etc.) and the money that comes is only a by-product. If you hate what you are doing and rely on the money you earn to make you happy by buying stuff, then I think that you are living a meaningless life.

Wer zahlt schon gerne Steuern? Schon gar nicht die Schönen und Reichen. Klaus Barski aus Königsstein

Wer zahlt schon gerne Steuern?

If money is not an issue then there would be no limit to the things that I want for Christmas. I wouldn’t even have a hard time figuring out which one comes first. I remember having this lesson on line about the law of attraction. My mom gave me another one of her endless litany about how difficult life is, the financial shortage we have at home and how sad and lonely her life is, which to me sounded like her telling me a gazillion times that she was born with the negative thoughts straight from my grandmother’s womb. I am not about to go on and whine about this because in the first place I’m not writing about her. That would be a crime and I would be guilty. (Still I wish I can write about her one day). so in the course of the litany, I started feeling bad, literally her negativity got into me and now there’s two negative people inside the house. It’s a bad sign because I will erupt pretty soon. I’m not allowed to talk back to my mother but sometimes I do. Now, I know the rules, “Obey Your Parents”…regardless. So again I am back to the subject which is forbidden.

Wait…

Wait…

I decided to breathe but the tears where running down my cheeks now. I just hate NEGATIVE people. Grrrr… so I decided to pray inside my room then my mind started to drift somewhere and I remember my on line lesson, “Law of Attraction”. I started to think of money…yes…in dollars and better yet I was thinking of $61 million dollars. Slowly, slowly, I thought. Yeah, why not? Nothing is impossible. Before you judge me, I have a disclaimer. I am fully aware that this million dollars exist only in my mind at that moment. Since it already existed, why not spend it in my mind? So in my mind, I started doing the math. I gave some to my relatives and neighbors. An amount that they would really be happy and I am still happy with whats left for me and my kids. I bought a house, my dream house. With the beautiful couch, a nice kitchen with extra rice and gravy…not the chicken. I stick with what I wanted really, and never exaggerate my house just because I had the money. ‘Tis my dream house after all. Of course, I didn’t forget the books, I wanted them in a nice bookshelf. And a little lawn and some flowers in the garden for the coffee table. I have become used to greeting my day with my morning coffee and some nice thoughts. My friends will also share my coffee table because it is one of my sweet treasures in life, to talk about anything with coffee as our witness.

My room will have a small terrace with yet another coffee table and single couches. I left the last part because it’s suppose to be exciting…the parking lot. I don’t know much about cars but I like the big masculine ones. Say for example, the Nissan Patrol or the Ford Expedition. I took the driving class in my imagination and I was very glad driving my Ford. I didn’t spend much because this is all I bought from my $61 million. I deposited the money to the bank and I’m earning interest.

Initially, the plan was to sleep my tears away. As it turned out my brain became so hyperactive, I couldn’t sleep. I got excited thinking about it. Money is such a drug. I had hopes and plans that I never mentioned because it has nothing to do with money but I performed it together with my house and my car. I saw my children laughing and playing and it was our home.
