Julia

The London scene will soon have a bright new star, our last milonga ended up being a valedictory for Julia. Although still fairly new to tango, she has put in a lot of effort and has been a bright smiling face we will all miss. We all wish her well and have no doubt she will be welcomed in London they are lucky to be getting her.

The Pant milonga (saturday night) itself was a great success everyone enjoyed themselves; This was not just about the people but the way everyone kept line of dance, refrained from overtaking and the nuevo stuff, also everyone was here to dance. Numbers were down, but I think it is just about this time of year, late night shopping, the bad weather, and full social calendars, all help to keep people away. Maybe when they realise what they missed they will be sorry and come to the next one, still I do not want to paint a bleak picture, there were enough people there, afterall I hardly sat down.

Unusually again there were more men than women, this I think helped. Although here it has been drummed into the men that they must ask the women to dance, we still get some who do not get enough dances. Not tonight though, the only respite the women got was to dodge into the kitchen. The crowd who were here were here just to dance, and any woman who sat for more than a few minutes was soon pounced on.

I never understood why, but Viv often does not get dances, whether the new dancers are intimidated or not I do not know (although she always follows the golden rule; never criticise or try to teach in a milonga). Again though tonight she danced all night, I had to make an appointment to dance with my own wife.

We had some shoes on sale as well, this provided a welcome diversion for all. Although Viv had a small collection of womens shoes, Dave had a quite comprehensive collection with mens shoes as well, so everyone was catered for.

Towards the end of the night we had a “cake dance” for Julia, like a “birthday dance” but it was not her birthday and we felt we had to do something for her. We finished with lots of hugging and kisses. We are a close community and are always sad to see one of our number leave, but we wish her well in her new life and have told her to keep in touch.

If you enjoyed this or any post, please post a comment. I am always happy to hear your opinions, even if we disagree.

I am going to have a little rant. I read Tango Bob’s post about YouTube and it got me thinking

I am going to have a little rant.

I read Tango Bob’s post about YouTube and it got me thinking. I jokingly told Bob that one could possibly learn something from watching videos. However, most people wouldn’t actually know what to look for. How would someone know what is good or bad if they are just starting out? I read a lot of Tango Blogs and a lot of people post YouTube videos of people who they think are wonderful dancers, teachers, etc. It even happens on Facebook. Being ever open-minded, I usually play the video. I usually end up watching things that make me cringe. I have to restrain myself from leaving a comment like: You gotta be kidding me?! After all, I was a beginner once. Most of it is nuevo or show crap. A gancho here, a lift there, an open embrace and kick to the back of your head here. Need I say more. That is NOT Tango, and it certainly isn’t the Argentine Tango that I have learned and have fallen in love with.

What particularly irks (and saddens at the same time) me is that a lot of beginners think that this is the real deal, and they all want to do the fancy moves that they see in the videos. Please, don’t. Some of what you are seeing is show or stage Tango. All that acrobatic stuff is for the stage, where it belongs, and not for the dance floor, where you can really hurt someone doing that. The people who perform stage Tango on stage are highly skilled and trained dancers. These videos should be labelled with a hazard warning: FOR STAGE USE ONLY – DO NOT TRY THIS IN A MILONGA. Every time I see a stage performance like Tango x 2 or Tango Fire I inevitably hear someone say, “I couldn’t possibly do that!” and I am thinking, ‘You are too damn right about that, and neither should you try!’ I have nothing against stage Tango and have enjoyed going to several performances, but that is where it should stay.

As for nuevo, well, I have done my fair share of that when I started out and didn’t know much better. I can do it, but I prefer not to. I no longer take classes because people teach moves. I don’t want to know moves. Besides, I’m a follower and I don’t need to know the move! I just need to know HOW to move. A YouTube video will not teach you that either. As for my issues with nuevo, it isn’t that I don’t like people who do it. I dislike it when people do it badly in a milonga, when they are being annoying and not following the line of dance or are bumping into people. I do know of people who dance large in the milongas and they are mindful of others, but there are very few of those and they are the exception to what I consider to be the norm of nuevo dancers.

Another thing that irks me about some of these YouTube videos is the music. One can pretty much guarantee that at least a third (I am under guestimating here) of the so-called Argentine Tango dancing is done to non-tango music. What the heck is that all about!? Some of it isn’t even Tango-inspired music! I just don’t get it and I don’t really want to. As far as I am concerned, Argentine Tango is about the music and when you dance it to non-Tango music, then it changes the concept of the dance and just makes it contemporary. If I want to look at contemporary dance, I will go to an Alvin Ailey performance or something like it.

Look, to me, if you dance Argentine Tango to non-Tango music, you might as well learn Ceroc instead. Ceroc is meant to be danced to any kind of music and I have even danced it to Gotan Project at the Casbah in South Kensington – and that was weird.

So, back to my rant about YouTube. I don’t have anything against YouTube or the people that put up their videos. In fact, there are some lovely videos of people dancing Argentine Tango to authentic Tango music. I am sure something can be learned by watching these videos. After all, people can learn by watching others. The other thing people can do is to talk about what you are watching. I have been very lucky to have more experienced dancers discuss what was happening on the dance floor with me. This is nice because…and that is not nice because….. My gripe is when beginners think that just because they see something on a video that looks cool, it must be a good thing to try. Well, don’t. If you don’t know how to do something, don’t do it. Have someone teach it to you instead and then you might just be able to do it without injuring someone. Thats’s what we have teachers for! But if teachers are going to be teaching show Tango moves…well, that is a rant for another time!

Io lo so!

When I noticed a lady getting kicked in the practica, I of course intervened. A secada is supposed to be a replacement; there is no force attached, and definitely no kicking or pushing. Now our perpetrator replied that he was not doing a secada, but something he had seen on you tube.

Of course this was not tango and I told him so, his reply was that this was a tango guy doing it. I was getting nowhere here and this as I have often said is not my class, so for now I let it lie. I hope he will not try this again, words will have to be exchanged we cannot have the ladies kicked.

This brings me to another subject altogether; It seems that for some You Tube is a legitimate teaching device, I think that this is wrong on two levels:

Firstly; anyone who has tried to learn any type of dancing from videos, discs, or the net will have found eventually it does not work. Your screen will not pick up your faults. You may well assume something is correct and nobody will be there to put you right. Tango uniquely is more about musicality, posture, and a conversation between leader and follower. How on earth can anyone hope to learn this on their own, what you see in tango is mostly an illusion, we invite our followers to move and make the world believe we have moved them with our feet or whatever, see this on you tube and of course you will believe the illusion and try to copy. You tube does not teach you how to lead, how to stand, or how to move.

Secondly and even more importantly, the internet is democratic. Anyone who happens upon this blog that does not know me, only has what I say here as evidence of who I am and what I know. This applies to the internet in general, anyone can put almost anything (decency aside) on to you tube. I could put a film on there telling the world of my financial qualifications and my answer to the world’s financial crisis; would you all close your deposit accounts on my say so? Would you sell me all your gold for a pittance just because I was on Youtube? I think not, but for some reason anyone who posts videos of tango is deemed to be an expert. Some may well be, others not, but the one thing all these videos have in common is, you cannot learn tango from them.

I can’t make Shrewsbury this week, so the normal lively debate from The Coracle will have to go unreported. My next post may have to wait until I have something more to say without the Coracle chat I will be short on ideas. Of course if anyone wants to suggest a topic, I am sure to have an opinion.

Like this advertisement? I certainly do.

Well, I even practise steps that I just created in the subway, too. I know people watching me but the joy of the dance will exceed the embarassment.

You may call it, “Tango Maddness.” But I would rather call it “Tango Enlightenment,” like the highest point they can reach in Zen Buddhism.

couple in BsAs

Maybe that’s why we sometimes close our eyes. It’s like a meditation in Zen.

Once you reach this stage, you are unstoppable. You dance for you and your partner and just the joy of the dance carry you.

Good for you! Now you are somebody!!! There are so many people who like tango. But not many people can reach this stage.

It’s held from mid-to-end of August every year.

Last year in the Mundial’s “Tango Salon” division, a Japanse couple won the 1st place. I have seen them many times in Buenos Aires. They may have won because they have achieved “Tango Enlightenment” since they came from the country where Zen Buddhism flourished.

Anyways, tomorrow (Tuesday, 17th)’s Prince of Tango Club meeting will be covering Enligtenment Steps: Rolling Sacadas for both a woman and a man. And also, we will cover colgada 101. It would be perfect for those who like to know Colgada and somebody who is looking for something extra in Colgada.

After living in London for over 20 years, I am moving to the coast. After two years on the market,

After living in London for over 20 years, I am moving to the coast. After two years on the market, I finally sold my house. I have always wanted to live beside or near the sea and now that will finally happen. After more than 20 years, I am exchanging the sound of the planes flying over my house at the crack of dawn to the sound of seabirds at a more reasonable hour.

What does that mean for London Tango? Well, it just means that I won’t be dancing much in London. I haven’t been dancing much these last six months as I have either been working or spending weekends at the coast. I am still keeping up the blog and will still be posting Special Events. London isn’t far, so I might make a trip up to the big city now and again. Besides, it’s where I learned to dance and love Argentine Tango. I have made a lot of friends that I am going to miss. So when I come up to visit, the evening will be even more special.

Life may change, but Tango goes on. I am going to explore the Tango scene in Brighton and Hove. There is no Tango where I live. It takes as long to drive to Brighton as it did for me to drive to Holborn or Chalk Farm or Tufnell Park. Maybe even less time. At some point, I will add a Dance Calendar for Brighton, Eastbourne and Hove. As the Argentine Tango scene is not as extensive as in London, the calendar will also incorporate Salsa and Ceroc/LeRoc/Jive. I have already danced LeRoc in Eastbourne. Tomorrow I will be dancing Salsa (my first dance before Tango). I am already acquainted with people in my new ‘home town’. That is the beauty of dance. Dancing brings like-minded people together. One doesn’t ever have to be alone. Having a few different dance forms under my belt means that I can travel pretty much anywhere and find some dancing and make new friends.

I have a lot to do with my move and finding a place to live, so I may not be posting as regularly as I had been. There is still more of Ask Arlene on the burner and I am regularly updating Special Events and the Calendar.

If anyone in Brighton, Hove and Eastbourne want to let me know what is going on in the Tango, Salsa or Ceroc/LeRoc/Jive world, drop me a line with a link to your website.

Happy Dancing To All!

It must be hard to run a tango scene in a university town. You advertise, work up a good crowd, teach them to be good leaders and followers, then they get their degrees and move on. Anna and John have my admiration for this. We may not always agree about the music, but I will always love coming here and dancing with Anna.

Despite having an 80th birthday party to go to, we could not miss the workshop and tea dance that they had arranged in Bangor.

Saturday started out filthy, rain and mist, almost no light. Even at a good pace it would take me an hour and a quarter to drive. We decided to take the SEAT my little Suzuki although economical would not be a good drive that low down in the rain. When we arrived at Bangor I was glad, the narrow streets offered almost no parking, and when we found a spot, I was not sure what condition I would find the car in.

So suitably stressed put we arrived in Penrallt church hall a beautiful stone building with ornate wooden ceilings. Greeted by Sharon as a long lost friend (Well it was over 36 hours) and then Anna and john. Of course I also greeted little Leo, can I adopt him as my grandson??

Sharon did a milonga workshop. She kept it very simple, but I thought it good, that as most of these were very new beginners, they were getting an introduction early to milonga, so hopefully they would not learn to fear it. After a few stragglers arrived the numbers evened out and Viv stayed on the sidelines to help Sharon.

I was very impressed, most of the ladies here had never danced milonga before yet they followed me well.

All too soon the class was over and it was time to attack the cakes. I tried hard to be good, honestly. I am getting close to my target weight, but every time I think I may achieve it I am surrounded by vicious cakes, all determined to make me suffer.

Anna had promised to save me, but Leo was taking up her time, still I did not do too badly.

I got those dances with her eventually and most of the women at some point. I did leave one woman standing when Lola came on; I said that I would return to her when it was over. I don’t get this, why is everyone suddenly playing Lola? I believe that it was played on Strictly, but that will never make it a tango. It is four four time, but it does not even sound tangoish. I am threatening a screaming fit next time it is played.

OK Sharon played (apart from Lola) all traditional tango, I suspect someone requested it, and lets face it we are outside our realm, keep a low profile.

All in all we had good time, some even said they may come to Chester, certainly all seemed to have a flair for tango, and young people who would spread out across the UK may well start tango scenes all over the country.

More power to you Tango Bangor.

Some carried on dancing but for some the cake was too much.

If you are a certain age and English (I do not know if this applies to Scotland and Wales) you may r

If you are a certain age and English (I do not know if this applies to Scotland and Wales) you may remember a time when there was only one radio in your school. This was located in the headmaster’s office and every day at eleven the teacher would come in with a large board with feet and a speaker in the centre. This would be plugged into the wall so that we could all listen to the BBC.

Sad the things you remember, Racheal Percival, Marjorie Eele and especially William Appleby, the presenters of “Music and Movement”. We would all sit or stand doing dance like movements all at the directions of these wonderful presenters. Sadly these days are long gone along with the light service on which they were broadcast.

Thursday night and the beginners were allowed for this occasion to stay with the intermediates. We were lined up on either side of the room and recreated “Music and Movement”. My side of the room were instructed to move to the rhythmical music while on the opposite side they moved only to the lyrical.

Roles were reversed and everyone suddenly started to feel the music. When we coupled up we were instructed to dance with someone of our own level so that it did not matter that we had so many beginners.

So we were asked to just dance to the music as we had been doing, it looked not too bad to me, but stuck in the body of the class it is difficult to tell. Next the ladies were asked to do what they felt to the music. Although hard leading from the front and difficult for the men to follow everyone coped well. The class moved much more slowly when the women led, there was more emphasis on the lyrical, less rushing around, dare I say, more feeling. So next we were asked to discuss with our partner what we had done and then cooperate and do the next dance.

We changed couples and repeated the exercise; still the men do not get it. When asked they say “when we do some thing lyrical the music has already changed”. This of course is why we need to know the music, and why we need the traditional tango that follows a pattern. We men are simple creatures, keep the rules simple and we can follow them. Introduce complex tunes, mix up the rhythms and we are unable to cope.

So what have we learned?; when it is lyrical, slow it down; know the music, really know the music; and when we slow it down and feel the music the ladies love it.

I have the feeling that some like to make Tango something complex, foot positioning, the embrace, posture, all must be just so. Of course the embrace is important, posture likewise, but everywhere I go now I see people who are getting in an advanced state of stress over a dance. We dance for enjoyment, few classes I have been to have been this much fun and few if any have so reached what tango is all about.

Back at The Coracle we discussed this, how we had thirty people now moving to the music, dancing with each other and yet the room moved in a big wave, not creating gaps nor log jams, simply because we were listening to the music.

I am afraid I got a bit passionate when the subject of teachers came up; it seems after a very short time everyone thinks that they can teach tango. I hear it all the time in classes; beginners try to teach other beginners who have had one less class. Someone who went to a workshop now has all the techniques to teach what they have learned and after less than a year people rush off to set up their own classes.

To be good enough to teach takes a long time, or as in Sharon’s case a lot of work. To teach Argentine tango without knowledge of Argentina is a falsehood and, apart from one notable exception I know of no one who does it well without that knowledge.

I was sitting on the radiator while this went on, and I cooled down when I moved, but my feelings remain the same, I know those who can teach, those who have the knowledge and those who have the experience, and as such I know those teachers with whom I would not take a class even as an assistant. We left it at that, even those who sympathise with my views cannot fully understand without knowing Buenos Aires so there was little point in pursuing it any more, there will always be those who dance tango and those who know tango, I like to think that I may one day become one of the latter but those who have never visited the city of tango never will know tango.
