Just quickly as the cab’ll be here for me before 6am to get me to the office for 9am. I’ve had an amazing Sunday which consisted of:

- being woken by not the lady and the plumber, but Mrs. And Mrs. Thumb (think about it)
- a lovely brekkie, closely followed by coffee+cake from the cutest wee shop (which stocked Duchy Originals)
- a drive out to an amazing big hill / mountain type viewpoint with views of Melbourne (can’t remember the name) – an authentic Aussie house warming barby hosted by some of Pinky’s old mates
- a swim in the indoor heated pool, closely followed by the finest home cooked meal…

I’ve had a great time in Melbourne. Such a great time that my week off will mainly be spent here, with trips around the region. The best bit?

I’ll be in the members enclosure at the Melbourne cup a week Tuesday! The Aussie version of our Ascot. Oh, that and more time with Pinky and the Brain, who’ve effortlessly made my weekend here an absolute pleasure…

Iain is going to win big on the geegees..

Picture it. The walk to work. Ten minutes. I leave the apartment, and I have a corking view of the Sydney Opera House on my right.

Storm down Alfred Street (where I am), on top of Milsons Point train station. One stop to work, but I walk. It’s a rather pleasant 25 or so degrees. I am wandering down a street with businesses under the railway arches. Like plenty we have in London, but about twice the size.

A few car places, and I see this bad boy…

Iain fell deeply in love today with a car. A bit like when Rachel off of friends fell in love. With a shampoo…

I have to write it all down so that I can remember every detail!! It was the perfect night…

09/09/09
I met Chris in the city for dinner. He took me to the Sydney Tower Restaurant, which was amazing! If you haven’t been there it’s a revolving restaurant that looks over the whole of the city, really romantic! They take a photo of you before you go up and then try to sell it to you. Ours looked HORRENDUS! So we didn’t buy it, at this stage I had NO IDEA what was going to happen.

We then drove to Milsons Point and sat on one of the gazebos overlooking the harbour and the Opera House. We talked for ages and then decided to leave, but Chris had some unfinished business and he proposed! It was beautiful and romantic and everything I could have imagined! I’m so happy =D And so completely in love!

It was another beautiful spring day in Sydney. So thought I do something a little bit different today. I found this nice spot in Milson’s Point on my way home from picking up the Scoopy. So today I rode through the city and over the Harbour Bridge to Milson’s Point. The weather was perfect for a nice shot of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House.

The Other Side of the Harbour

Then it’s time for some bacon & eggs at the local cafe. After sipping my long black coffee, it’s time to head back over the bridge to the city. My mate’s birthday is coming up in about 2 weeks. So I browsed around some of my favourite shops in the city for some gift ideas. It is really difficult to shop for someone else. At the same time it is also very tempting to get something for yourself. But I was able to resist

After spending about an hour window shopping, I still couldn’t decide on anything to get my friend. I took the short ride to the pool and burned off some of the brekky I had earlier. Then it was off to Westfield Bondi Junction for more gift shopping. Parking at the mall was a breeze as usual. But the gift decision wasn’t. I still couldn’t decide after visiting a few stores. At least I had a few ideas. I’ll have to give it some more thought. Looks like another shopping trip is in the cards soon.

Dear Speck, Nothing new to report. I think I am going to be thoroughly ready for you to come out when the time comes – now it’s just you getting bigger and me being perpetually hungry day after day. Some days you kick a bit more than others, but that is the main difference. Yesterday was a big all-out kicking day. I took that as a sign that perhaps I wasn’t tiring you out enough so on the way home I walked down to Milson’s Point, caught the ferry to Balmain East and then trekked my way home through Balmain for some exercise.

View from Milson's Point across the Harbour

Luna Park at Milson's Point

Great walk, it’s nice to be out and about on the harbour. Pictures to show you. I think it worked – you were a little calmer last night than you had been all day. Your efforts yesterday were more disconcerting than normal because of your position: you seem to have spun around so you were kicking up towards my lungs in an upward direction rather than the down towards the bladder which I’m more used to. Haven’t written for a few days but all is pretty quiet on your front, and I’m back down in Sydney for the week after the weekend in Brisbane. Your Dad, I, your Aunt & T put your pram together on the weekend. It was a communal effort (see pictures). Wanted to check that the carrycot we bought actually fit the pram. It did, good. Your dad has since ordered the spare part we needed to make it tip-top, so after a quick wash I need to do, it will be set for you. Its a little strange to think about pushing you around in it. You now have a pram, a carrycot, a few little toys, a muslin wrap to drape over the pram (thanks T & El)… Your dad and I had a practice getting the pram from the front of the house to the street too. It was something a friend suggested we try to make sure it would all work. And good thing we tried, ’cause it was impossible. The width of the middle step is just too short to use to leverage the pram up to the next step, and too long to allow you to skip it and just leverage straight up. Which in any case would make it a steep angle for you lying in it… I tried for a few minutes to get it up by myself, until your dad exclaimed, “You’re faking it. You’re being silly!” to me, and snatching the pram away to try for himself. After manoeuvring the pram in an 18 point turn through one of the Australian grass bushes by the front gate, and numerous bumps, he managed to get it up to the street. “See, it can be done!”… He took a quick look back and then laughed, admitting with me that if you had been in the pram at the time you would have lost an eye in the bush and then most likely fallen out one side as the pram tipped wickedly from side to side as he lumped it up the last step. So. That’s a no-go for our stairs the way they are now. We’ll have to think of an alternative – current best option – build a boardwalk-style ramp from the street to the front deck. Its been added to your Dad’s list of projects.

Pram Assembly - Mark 1

Pram Assembly - Mark 2

Apart from poking your eye out, your dad would have lost you again while in the pram. He came back into the yard through the gate, again, “It can come in ok… mmmm. Maybe a bit bumpy” (yeah, pity about the big bumps and the screaming baby had you been in it). And then deposited the pram on the front deck and stepped back to check the mailbox or something. At which point the pram started rolling backwards until I exclaimed and he managed to catch it just in time before it toppled right off. We both peed ourselves laughing as he put the brake on the pram. “Baby down. Bah baaaaah” (think game-show ‘you’re wrong’ buzzer noise). We decided perhaps we needed to put a doll in the pram and push it around for a few days to make sure we didn’t kill the doll, and practised for you. Maybe we will be the worst parents. I guess you’ll just have to wait and see. There is no going back at this point. Anyway, hope you’re all well in there. Back to Brisbane tonight. Look forward to the plane. love mum

It was the first day of business as usual today, as people returned back from their end of year holi

It was the first day of business as usual today, as people returned back from their end of year holidays. Surprise surprise! The ferry was late both ways, and two services failed to show up at all.

This morning we were told that the Darling Harbour service had reached maximum capacity at Huntleys Point, and would not be going to Drummoyne. We asked whether Sydney Ferries would be replacing the service, sending a new boat to pick up the stranded passengers at Drummoyne, McMahon’s, and Milson’s Point. No, we were told, no it would not. We were told to wait for the next ferry service which “should be coming along in about twenty minutes or so” (Thirty-five minutes later, the ferry finally arrived).

This afternoon, the 5.35 service still hadn’t left at ten to six, and it too decided it would not be going to Darling Harbour. When I inquired as to the cause of delay, the ferryman said “first we had technical problems, then we had another problem, then we were full.” A full ferry? Well blow me down! I thought that was a good thing – given that the proportion of passengers expecting to disembark at Darling Harbour made up about 50%. There would still be plenty of room for the people expecting to get on at other stops. But no, they concluded that the most logical decision was to not stop at Darling Harbour at all. We then we waited another seven minutes so that all the Darling Harbour patrons could get back off the ferry, and our half-empty river-cat went directly to Drummoyne. (Can I get a round of applause?)

Truly, I cannot think of any justification for such utter incompetence. They’ve only had the last month to prepare for the start of business in January (hell, they’ve had since last Christmas to fix any back-to-work inefficiencies). Even during the Christmas break they still couldn’t get it right, (some people still work over Christmas you know), only during this time they’d show up early and fail to hang around to collect anyone that was expecting the service to wait or arrive at its scheduled time. Even worse, some ferry services failed to show up at all. (This happened last Wednesday).

I really wish I had kept a proper record though, of the amount of times the ferry was late, or non-existent. I would have put it against a ratio of rude ferry employees, and missing staff. I can’t think of any other business in the world that would be allowed to remain so clearly sub-standard without significant barriers and penalties. Public transport is the one and only “business” I can think of where consumers are completely at the mercy of the organisation. Our tax dollars (and post-tax dollars) are paying for this service, you would think there would be an expectation of return on investment.

And yet, despite the fundamental lack of organisation of any kind whatsoever, Sydney Ferries still hands out anti-privatisation propaganda and expects people to believe that an inefficient, under-funded service with absolutely no accountability is the lesser of two evils.

If Sydney Ferries are privatised, the leaflets explained (without any burden of proof), we should expect:

Decreased services

Slower arrival times

Ticket price increases

Less staff

Well to begin with I don’t exactly know what constitutes a “slower arrival time.” I’m no engineer, but I would assume that a ferry is designed to drive at a certain speed (taking into account local speed limits); private or public – it’s the same bloody boat, I don’t really understand how speed would come into it at all.

As for ticket price increases, to be honest, if they increased services to the west and inner west , if the ferries arrived on time, if the staff were friendly and well-trained – I would be more than willing to pay more for my weekly ferry pass.

Furthermore, the only way that services would decrease under privatisation, is if all the wharfies decided to go on strike.
Here is what Sydney Ferries hasn’t told you about privatisation:

If Sydney Ferries were privatised, it most likely means that all Sydney Ferry employees would not be able to belong to a union. Yes, the rules of fair-trade, employment and non-discrimination would still apply (as it does to all other workers regardless of industry), but it would most likely mean that if an employee didn’t feel like coming into work, they wouldn’t have a union to hide behind. Under privatisation, in exchange for better training, a heirachical employment structure with benefits and an increased wage, there would be an expectation (amazing as it may seem) that if you don’t come to work – you don’t get paid. To Sydney Ferry employees this a major concern because at the moment the consequences for people who are late to work or fail to show up – are few (if any).

Sydney Ferries is in desperate need of privatisation by a forward thinking businessman who can lay out not only a comprehensive business plan to keep Sydney Ferries afloat (no pun intended) and lucrative, it needs someone who can make the damn things run on time (pardon the cliche). Someone who can account for the occasional mishap and have a plan in place that accounts for all possible setbacks and obstacles.

Moreover, the money paid in exchange for ownership of Sydney Ferries (including ownership of the ferries, wharfs, and technology) could go towards fixing other public transport services – including fixing our train lines and extending them into the western suburbs, or creating more buslanes out to the inner west. They could buy up the boats, and engineers, fix the technology (which I’m sure is part of the problem). With ferries and river cats being serviced frequently by qualified engineers, run by people who are well-paid and happy in their jobs, (working under stricter supervision), provided with the training they need to succeed in the industry, they will finally be providing a superior service, attracting more people onto Sydney Ferries, thereby making it a lucrative business to run.

There is no better time to buy than right now. With rising national debt and 15 million Australians out of work at the present time, the government needs the money as much as the jobless need employment. What better time than now to recruit into public transport services and get a solid management structure in place, with a rising scale of salaries and/or benefits. You’d be taking it off the governments hands, and those government employees faced with job cuts, (it’s inevitable that in a board room somewhere, there are a group of people employed to have a summit on Sydney Ferries, being told to reach the consensus to do absolutely nothing) can be integrated into Sydney Buses and City Rail. They can lend their expertise in government bureaucracy and finally come up with a solution for our existing public transport problems.

From today onwards, I will be keeping an exact record of the incidences of delayed and non existent ferry services. At the end of the month, I will be delivering this to the state government, with an attached proposal for privatisation. An Irritating Truth
http://www.anirritatingtruth.blogspot.com

October 26, 2008 – Sunday

Spent the Day lazyly…
In the evening we went to “Milson’s Point”, its on the northern end of the Sydney Bridge. We walked down to a small park below the bridge to view the Opera House from the other side of the water and also gaze at the Sydney Bridge from underneath. I was awed at the metal and it was more gigantic than watching it from a distance. As we aproached the Warf.. we saw a ferry coming in so we hopped on to it and went for a round ( thats the advantage of having a red pass… you dont have to worry about the tickets and all).

Did some grocery Shopping and we were home.

I did “Murg Hariyali”… Only thing is, i did put a pinch of salt extra….. ;-(

Ripples Cafe sits right on the water, next to Luna Park in Milsons Point. The positioning is perfect for a great view of the harbour and the city on a couple of hundred metres away. The great thing about Ripples is, contrary to what you might think after seeing the view and some of the food, it is not HUGELY expensive. Granted, its not a cheap restaurant, but it certainly isn’t overpriced with mains in the mid-$20’s.

I LOVE this cafe, for the food but mainly for the atmosphere. It really makes you appreciate the city that we live in, and works for breakfast, lunch or dinner. To have a look at their menu pop on the Ripples website.

Why not make a whole day out of it? Access is so damn easy by ferry (the wharf is literally 10m from the restaurant), and Ripples is located right next to Luna Park, so you could always pop by there afterwards for a ride on the ferris wheel or even just go for a stroll around Kirribilli or Lavender Bay.
