Bagaimanakah implementasi pembelajaran berbasis Peta Pikiran (Mind Mapping)?

Busan (1993) dalam Djohan (2008) mengemukakan, bahwa A Mind Map® is powerful graphic technique which provides a universal key to unlock the potential of the brain. It harnesses the full range of cortical skills – word, image, number, logic, rhythm, colour and spatial awareness – in a single, uniquely powerful manner. In so doing, it give you a freedom to roam the infinite expanses of your brain.

masing-masing Mind Mapping sangat unik, sehingga mempermudah proses pengingatan.

Implementasi Pembelajaran berbasis Peta Pikiran (Mind Mapping)

Pembuatan Peta Pikiran

Taken from this source, all rights respectfully acknowledged.

People trained in public education may be unaware of what it is to make a mind map, this is undoubtedly true because teachers are not normally trained in the used of a Mind Map. As a former teacher and senior educator I find this shocking as it is such a useful and effective way of learning, improving recall, planning and researching. We don’t expect people to run on one leg but we train people to teach using only the left half of their brain! and not realize how useful it can be. This sort of thinking is associated with the right side of people’s brains rather than the left. With left-brain thinking, thought processes are more logical and linear. You do what the Red Queen advised Alice in the Wonderland books: “Begin at the beginning. Then proceed until you come to the end. Then stop.” But right-brain thought doesn’t travel in straight lines. It works more on the basis of a picture, a sort of visual map of associated ideas. And in COLOUR.

The use of such mind tools isn’t intended to be exclusionary and shut left-brain thinking right out. Rather, people who talk about these tools hope that the world can learn to add right-brain thinking as a method that works in partnership with the centuries old, tried-and-true methods employed by the left brain. The goal is to discover relationships and possibilities that might never have been recognized in the left-brain way of approaching knowledge. Learning to make a mind map may be a way of expanding that knowledge beyond its previous boundaries. Try a simple experiment: close you eyes and have some say the name of an object to you (eg CAT) what happens in your head? You get an image of a cat not the word printed out, you might get the smell or taste or sensation of a cat but certainly not the word. We recall in images yet we are expected to learn in text. the two go together, thats how we learn to read: Image and Association.

So how does one begin making a mind map? One starts with a central concept or idea, written on a piece of paper, a white or blackboard, or perhaps on a computer screen. Then the brainstorming begins brainstorming is not the same as Mind Mapping and shoud not be confused with it, however it is a very common misconception. One can do this alone, but it’s even more effective with several people. Everyone tosses out any idea they think of that relates to that central concept, and all ideas are written down. Once everyone is done, all the concepts are analyzed and gathered into broad themes that suggest themselves, essentially doing visual mapping to link common ideas together.

By brainstorming like this and using mind mapping techniques, sometimes new connections are discovered that weren’t noticed before. Things might be seen to affect the central issue that no one previously realized had anything to do with it. Left-brain linear thinking concentrates more on the fine details of an issue, while as one works to make a mind map, it becomes a means of seeing the bigger picture, or discovering the constellation of ideas forming the wider environment of the issue. These two ways of approaching a problem don’t need to be in competition, but can work together to form a more comprehensive whole.

This is a good article but it misses huge uses of Mind Mapping: LEARNING, RECALL, RECORDING, PLANNING and MEMORY. Mind Mapping is certainly not brainstorming. It has many other more powerful functions. In education which is where the article started so well MM should be taught so that everyone can use more of their potential. This article also confuses the concept of brain storming which is usually a group creativity/ideas generating exercise with the process of Mind Mapping which is a tool which can be used for LEARNING, RECALL, RECORDING, PLANNING and MEMORY as well as creativity exercises.

I recently discovered via Twitter FontCapture that can create a font from your own handwriting.
MyThoughts – My Favourite Mac OS X Mind Mapping Software yet! Novamind had been my preferred M

MyThoughts – My Favourite Mac OS X Mind Mapping Software yet!

Novamind had been my preferred Mind Mapping Software application, but I didn’t really like the way my Mind Maps looked. They were okay for a chart style map, but I wanted an application that could give the appeal of the hand drawn Mind Map, but without the need for artistic talent – something I certainly do not have.

However, back in October, having read Buzan’s books, Head First and Mind Maps at Work, I decided to take a look at iMind Map, the Buzan Mind Mapping software application. Whilst researching I found a review and from this I downloaded a free trial of a Mind Mapping software application MyThoughts for Mac.

As a Mac user I find it frustrating when applications are advertised as being for Mac OS X, but they are written for Windows and converted for the Mac platform, thus bringing some unwanted issues and they certainly can lack the feel that Mac users have become accustomed to. MyThoughts is written for Mac OS X and I was thrilled that it ran on, the newly released Mac OS, Snow Leopard, unlike iMind Map (the case when I was looking back in October, see status now)

My reasons for liking MyThoughts for Mac:-

It is native to Mac OS X and runs on Snow Leopard!

The Mind Maps produced, for me, are truer to how a Mind Map should be, I personally do not like rigid lines and regimented boxes, MyThoughts produces organic looking Mind Maps.

It is smooth, when you drag branches they do not wobble and flicker like iMind Map, something I found quite distracting.

The use of iPhoto within the application is superb, I enjoy mind mapping even more now I can make them personal by using my own photos with such ease.

One key point for me is the user interface, I found I was up and running in no time at all, the interface is very user friendly.

Of course being a Mac user I am accustomed to being able to drag and drop everything, and MyThoughts gives me that continuity.

MyThoughts comes with a huge selection of illustrations and I really like the designs, they are of a very high quality and cover many categories.

The price, I paid $49 which worked out about 29 UK pounds which is just a bargain compared to iMind Map at $99 (49 UK Pounds) for the most basic edition.

In conclusion

My experience of using MyThoughts leaves me with a great sense of satisfaction. It was affordable, it is easy to use, includes all the features and functions and some cool extras that Mac users will certainly appreciate from a Mind Mapping software application.

Since buying MyThoughts I have found a new enthusiasm for Mind Mapping and I love the results I am getting. For the first time I feel proud of my Mind Maps and from this pride came the confidence to start this blog.

So, as you have probably gathered I am now one very happy Mac based Mind Mapper.

The Facts

Software Application: MyThoughts for Mac

Developer: Mode de Vie

Requires: OS X 10.5 (I am running Snow Leopard)

A couple of weeks ago I was reading my gReader and saw this site (I originally couldn’t remember who

A couple of weeks ago I was reading my gReader and saw this site (I originally couldn’t remember who posted it and link to the original review – If you read below it was a member of my PLN – Bill Chapman – sorry I didn’t get it right the first time) being reviewed. I know that a great number of Special Education students do really well using mind maps and my last school used Inspiration Mind Mapping software.

At that time I used Inspiration a lot for taking notes for students in my co-taught U.S. History class and was totally impressed with the software package. The students seemed to remember the information more easily when it was presented in this graphic form. When I found out that they had a web-based beta application called oddly enough Webspiration, I couldn’t wait for a chance to try it out.

I was at a presentation by Central Maine Inclusive Schools (CMIS) recently on Attachment Disorders. I like to take notes and sometimes make them into a blog, but I hate handwriting notes (as do most of my students), it is a waste of time it seems, when you hardly ever refer back to them and they sit in a drawer/folder until you throw them out.

I am a bit down on note taking as a practice for the most part, it is in my opinion a left-over skill set from when most teaching was accomplished by lecture for regular education or special education students. If teachers are using lecture as their main vehicle of educational delivery then I feel their students (at whatever level) are being short changed. I would rather turn on the record function of my laptop and record the teacher’s lecture and go back later to figure out what was being presented than attempting to take notes that I can’t read and don’t understand anyway…how many of Special Education students feel this way too? Probably most of them.

So I attempted to take the notes using Webspiration (as long as you have an internet connection) – it worked fabulously for me. But I can type pretty quickly, have used mind mapping software before and know that I don’t have to write everything the presenter puts out there.

Mind mapping applications are a great educational tools that presents things visually to students. I always thought that Inspiration was the most intuitive mind mapping program for me and now that they have a web based version, plan to start using it in my classroom. But there will definitely be a learning curve and some resistance just because it is new to most of the students.

I also like the sharing function also, my teaching assistant asked for a copy I sent her the share link and it worked perfectly.

The only question I have about the product is once it comes out of Beta, how much will the the Company charge for using Webspiration? If it isn’t too much, I might seriously consider a subscription. But as any teacher will tell you on our budgets free is better. Overall, after a short bit of use – two thumbs up

I have not received any kind of compensation for writing this review, it is simply my views/opinion of something that I am using.

Do the right thing for the right reasons – today and every day

I have been using mind mapping for organizing my work flow in the archives. I recently agreed to do an informal presentation for RRLC’s College Archivists Roundtable so I decided to try it out as a presentation tool, rather than Powerpoint.

You can download free software for mind mapping at freemind.sourceforge.net if you want to try it out.

The presentation is on EAD so I begin with a center circle with EAD then add nodes for Who, Why, What, How and Resources.

I attach nodes to each of these, e.g. How has nodes for EAD Cookbook and Archivist’s Toolkit.

Each of them have nodes, e.g. EAD Cookbook has three; Download, starting a finding aid, troubleshooting.

Then each of those has nodes. It ends up looking like an illustration of evolution.

A couple of advantages are

You don’t have to have all the branches open at once. You click on a node to expand it to the next level. This keeps it from being visually intimidating when you start out.

You can add links to external webpages or programs and documents on your computer to each node.

The presentation is on Dec 4th. I’ll report back to you.

I downloaded freemind, a mind mapping software solution and already I’m finding it to be very

I downloaded freemind, a mind mapping software solution and already I’m finding it to be very useful for note taking, so here’s a quick review.

FreeMind is really a thought mapping tool and not specifically a note taking tool. It allows you to add points in a tree-like manner. So you start with the main topic node and add a child node to it. It’s represented as a branch. When you add nodes to a parent node it automatically determines where the branch should go on screen. If you are adding a child node to the main parent it’ll alternate to the right and left for branches. Then if you add a child to a branch from the main parent it’ll put them one under the other. Click the thumbnail to see what I mean.

Essentially you only worry about organising the points according to the relevant information structure and thus not have to worry about visual presentation. This makes it a very quick and effective note taking tool.

Authored by Bobbi Deporter and Mike Hernacki Review by Jake S Whole-Brain Approaches to Note-Taking,

Authored by Bobbi Deporter and Mike Hernacki

Review by Jake S

Whole-Brain Approaches to Note-Taking, of the Quantum Booklet series, is a marvelously written work showing how to take notes with your entire brain, rather than the dominant half. It introduces such methods as the famous Mind Map style of Tony Buzan, and additionally goes on to fill in four major categories of content. The book, labeled Quantum Notes, addresses the main purpose of note-taking, mind-mapping, what mindscapes are, and what Notes:TM is.

On the issue of note-taking, the book says the following: “Effective note-taking is one of the most important skills anyone ever learns.” That proves to be true, as the book goes on to note – forgive the pun – the importance by saying how everyone takes notes of some kind every second of their life, and also marking “mental notes” as being ineffective and not to be used. According to Mrs. Deporter, “The main purpose of note-taking is to help you remember and understand valuable information.” Notes should be fun to take, the author claims, and the book goes on to show one of three fun ways to take notes: Mind Mapping.

What is a Mind Map? It is the equivalent of a brainstorm, but instead of mapping out non-existent or disassembled content, the mental cartographer – if you will – maps out what is already there, in order to effectively remember it. Mind mapping, invented by Tony Buzan in the late ‘70s, is “a whole-brain approach using visual images and other graphic devices to form impressions,” so says the author. The book lists such helpful laws for mind mapping, such as starting in the center of the image, selecting key words, and using many different colors. But for those who would think this method was zany, the next one is, to borrow a video-gaming term, a level-up: Mind-scaping.

Mindscapes are an outgrowth of Mind Mapping, developed by Nancy Margulies, a corporate consultant, and author. The primary concept of a Mindscape is to break all the rules. Start wherever imagination leads and progress onward to landscape the topic: that is the idea in use. But the book doesn’t stop with the wacky world of mindscapes. The last method of note-taking, and a surefire success, is a strange one for sure.

“Notes: TM” was designed by Mark Reardon, Quantum Learning facilitator, as a variant of Cornell Notes. “Notes: TM” is unique in that not only does the writer take notes, but the writer also makes their own notes. The “T” stands for ‘taking.’ The first thing everyone thinks of, of course, is taking notes, and this method is no different. The “M” stands for ‘making.’ The key to this method’s success is that the writer notes thoughts, impressions, feelings, reactions, questions, and concerns relevant to the speaker or material. In this way, the notes not only reflect the topic, but keep the note-taker actively involved.

Whole-Brain Approaches to Note-Taking is an excellent book, accurately covering all the topics it brings up, and should be read by anyone high-school level and above. The booklet covers: the main purpose of note-taking, mind-mapping, what mindscapes are, and what Notes:TM is.

How to Solve Problems with Idea Mapping

Problem solving is a problem in itself for many companies and at times can be one of the most daunti

Problem solving is a problem in itself for many companies and at times can be one of the most daunting tasks to undertake during the course of an otherwise regular work day.

For some, problems seldom occur while for others this may, unfortunately, be a daily activity. Since problem solving is not usually part of the typical daily agenda of “routine” activities, our ability to find the time and solve them efficiently and effectively is compromised.

For many, just finding time seems to be one of the greatest challenges and perhaps a problem to be solved in itself. Sweeping problems under the rug may be efficient but it is certainly not effective. (So … broom is not the solution we’re proposing).

Using IDEA Mapping Techniques can help you solve problems effectively and efficiently. IDEA Maps, Process Maps, and Mind Maps are variations on a theme. We may use the terms interchangeably in the discussion that follows.

Background:

While there are several different approaches and “forms” that can be used to manage the overall problem solving process, the two most critical steps that will determine the effectiveness of the solution are:

Define a Clear and Concise Problem Description / Statement

Determine the Root Cause(s) of the problem defined by the Problem Statement.

While the first step seems relatively simple, the second step requires a little more effort. There are at least two (2) root causes for most problems that stem from two simple questions:

Why Made?

Why Shipped?

These questions imply that defective product was made for a reason (process) and it was shipped to the customer undetected (system). In other words, the customer is not protected from receipt of defective product.

The root cause analysis process forms the basis for all subsequent problem solving activities, including verification, interim and long term corrective actions. A lot of time can be wasted simply because the real root causes were never identified.

Problem Solving Tools for Root Cause Analysis:

Many different tools can be deployed during the Root Cause Analysis process including Ishikawa Diagrams (Fishbone Diagrams), 5 Why (discussed in a previous post), Fault Tree Analysis, Q&A (Question Board), and Brain Storming to name just a few.

Mind Mapping or Process Mapping is a technique that provides an unconstrained approach to the thinking process for multiple input and contribution streams. Maps can also be used to identify interactions or relationships to other elements.

Mind Mapping (Process Mapping)

The center of the map contains the problem statement. We then surround the problem statement with potential inputs or contributors to the problem. These statements in turn become the ”center” of additional levels of inputs and contributors. In some respects, the process map can be very similar to a Bloom Diagram and certainly supports the logic found with fishbone diagrams.

The The draw back to “Mapping” is that most are usually developed on Whiteboards and not easily or readily translated into a software solution.

Software Solutions and Templates

While there are many spreadsheet based solutions, few provide an effective interface to support the use of mapping techniques. Even most fishbone diagrams developed in Excel are quirky and awkward at best.

While we typically do not endorse specific software solutions, however, FREEMIND is one software that we consider to be among the best of available solutions and can be downloaded free of charge. The download and installation process only requires a few minutes.

The developers of FREEMIND provide a clean, intuitive solution for creating and maintaining process or mind maps. While other commercial packages are available, FreeMind is more than capable of handling most problem solving challenges and quite simply is time and money well saved.

The FreeMind homepage provides a better description of the software and it’s capabilities than we could provide here. Our goal was to introduce “Mapping” as an effective and efficient tool that can be used in the problem solving process.

After spending some time with the software, you will quickly discover that there are many other opportunities where this software can serve you. We have a mind map that we use to manage weekly and daily reports, another for key metrics, and yet another for our business structure. The ability to use hyperlinks makes it an easy process to access external reports and resources .

The FreeMind main page provides an excellent overview and provides examples of their software in action. This is definitely worth looking into and may just save some time for real problem solving.

We are presently using FreeMind version 0.9.0 RC 6.

Mind Mapping, something we talked about from time to time in class but by 2nd year I think most people fell into the habit of doing the first thing that came to mind just to have it done in time to be handed in for marks.

“You are your own worst client” is probably the most accurate statement I’ve heard in the past 3 years.

I have been working on my own personal site/branding now for months and every time I get half done I’m tired of looking at it and have a better idea started. But, nothing is making me happy, nothing seems ‘clever’ enough. I’ll stare at logos on LogoPond for an hour wondering “How do they come up with such great designs when mine all look bleh?“.

I started reading a few other blogs of designers, mostly branding experts, and more often than not the idea of Mind Mapping was mentioned.

What is Mind Mapping?

Well, Mind maps have been around for many years, as early as the 3rd century. Basically, it’s the linking of images, words and colours to the mind to help spark creativity. Tony Buzan (the ‘Speed Reading’ guy) further developed and researched the concept in the ’60s and ’70s coining the term Mind Mapping. He has a few sites out there that go into a lot more depth about the concept as well as books, and even software.

Although they have software programs available for Mind Mapping, seriously… we’re designers and creative individuals, do it by hand. Especially this day and age where everything is done sitting on a computer, get a pack of cheap markers/crayons and have fun doing it by hand. Especially since it’s encouraged to draw images when possible and doodle which frankly, having tried a few of the available programs out there… you can’t really be free and creative.

How to Mind Map…

First we need an idea, what are we Mind Mapping? For the example, let’s say we’re designing a logo for a Bakery.

Take a BIG Piece of Paper – The bigger the better. The paper allows you to move and rotate it about while you work a bit more easily than your iMac.

Start in Landscape – When we write, words take up more space horizontally than vertically. Unless writing a novel. So, initially start with the paper going landscape not portrait.

Start in the Centre by Drawing the Topic – Images are worth 1000 words, we also associate with imagery better. Try doing the image in at least 3 colours, around 2″ in size to allow room for the rest of the map. Colour sparks the creative portion of the brain and gets the creativity started, so make it fun, bright, interesting. If trying to develop a logo for a door company, draw a door… if trying to do an annual report design for a phone company, draw Batman’s big red phone… etc. In this case, a loaf of bread (label if needed).

Draw Lines Out from the Centre to Themes – The central image is the topic, or “Title”, next we want to draw lines out to “Chapters” or sub-topics that relate back to the main focus. Use different colours for each line, make them curved and flowing, starting thick at the central image, and getting thinner towards the sub-topics. The flow of lines causes a visual rhythm, the thickness helps show direction. Each line should connect to something related to the central image. In our case, what is related to a Bakery? Well… what type of baked goods? Who are the target consumers? What goes into baked goods? What do you associate baked goods with?

Branch Out – Go to each sub-topic and list what comes to mind… it’s brainstorming so nothing is wrong or stupid, in fact what may seem wrong/stupid may be what sparks a unique new idea. Write out the list smaller than the size of the sub-topics. It’s also best to use printed letters rather than cursive since the mind (for some reason) works better with printed letters.

Go Over the Map – At this point you have a top, sub-topic, and multiple sub-sub-topics… now start letting the brain be more creative. Draw boxes around what stands out, doodle, draw images and arrows that point from one word to the next. At this point you should be starting to have ideas spring to mind as you look from one side of the map to the next making associations.

Sometimes the map works, sometimes, not so well… but hopefully this will give some people a new way of approaching their next design job rather than just randomly doodling and hoping an idea springs up.

Try a google image search on Mind Maps as well… some pretty creative ones, some, well… computer generated ones. Immediately I was more interested and inspired by the hand drawn ones versus the very stale looking computer ones.
