Come to Eastern America’s highest town, with an elevation of 5,500 ft, resting upon 150 acres boasting of views of the Blue Ridge Mountains; free yourself! We’ve heard it from so many different groups of people, Gnarnia is calling their name. The Blue Ridge Parkway peacefully and pleasantly guides you to Beech Mountain where you’ll find home at Gnarnia the Festival. If you haven’t gotten out deep into nature’s inner beauty, here it is in it’s purest form. It features gorgeous views, hikes, waterfalls, overlooks, and other attractions along the Blue Ridge Montains and Appalachian Trail. You can catch it all on your way to or from Gnarnia. “As the highest peak in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and one of the great destinations in the South, Grandfather Mountain stands head and shoulders above the surrounding region.” You may even want to take your own detour and take the time to explore the ridges and valleys,  the native wildlife habitat,  the Mile-High Swinging Bridge; an experience of a lifetime. If you want to wander off to picnic and fish, there are a bunch of beautiful trails that lead to 60-85 ft. falls with trout to catch (ie: Crabtree Falls, The Cascades, Laurel Creek Falls). When you’re ready, head to Gnarnia the Festival from August 9th to August 11th. This year has a complete Yoga Schedule so bring your mat and proper gear and ‘prepare to align your chakras’.

We were attracted to Gnarnia from the start. They have covered all apects of a proper festival and provide live music, health & wellness, dance, community, nature, poetry, fashion, and more. As a part of the dance involvement, Gnarnia does hip-hop. BattleHolex Carolinas and DJ Brett Rock along with B-Boy Frantic (Universal Zulu Nation/ BattleHolex) present a 1 on 1 B-Boy (break-dance) battle and South East B-Boy Championships 2012 Qualifier event. “This is not the typical festival performance art showcase where people observe from a distance and clap politely for some novelty they don’t quite understand. This is an actual battle featuring B-Boys from across the South East. The format will be a single elimination, tournament-style battle judged by a panel of three, top regional B-Boys. This a chance to witness actual Hip Hop first hand, so join us at Gnarnia, learn something new, support B-Boy culture and get involved!”  Other activities include a poetry showcase featuring Solstiz, NovaKane, Griffin Paynes and others, the land of Oz, a costume ball, and bicycle jousting.

This year MCP Presents and The Disco Biscuits give you Camp Bisco 11, including a whole new Silent Disco experience, a fresh lineup of talent, top notch label showcases, fine vending, and a home away from home. This year’s must-see artists are, but not limited to, Amon Tobin: ISAM Live, Star Slinger, Archnemesis, Eliot Lipp (Live), Minnesota, Nit Grit. What a treat it was! Bookworm has been working heavily with Two Fresh and their company LabCoat. He has also been a part of the lineup for many of Mindelixir‘s Bass Church events, playing with Joker, Mux Mool, Fast Nasty, Clicks & Whistles and more. In September 2011, he played a Blue Mood Productions event with Zeds Dead, Bonobo, and Phaeleh at the Valarium (Knoxville). As he continues to play more events and release new music, his fanbase grows immensely! 3/26/12 marks a new checkpoint for Bookworm; he releases his latest EP, Outnumbered by Colors: Saturation. Immediately after a few moments of track 1, vibes were set and I needed to share after fully listening and taking in his musical message. From downtempo drum & bass to downtempo 808s, this jazzy, anxiety-relieving EP is a guide to peaceful thinking. “The Breaks” opens the EP as a lovely prelude to “Book’s Theme“. I would fully recommend this to any who meditate, practice yoga, or who just appreciate beautiful soundscapes that blend with any type of future beat. “Book’s Theme” continues the vibe and even adds more emotion with his catchy synths. His interlude is soulful and refreshing; try to ease your mind! It works! After the minute-and-a-half long interlude, the BPM picks up a bit with “8BBS” – I call this mind expanding dance music! You can’t help but to move your body to the beat though the vibe stays ambient-like. “The Diver” reminded me of one of the artists we are working with, Illegitimate Children – dark and inspiring. This track is filled with love and emotion on a more darker side. Becky Ribeiro is featured on the closing track, entitled “Antidote“, one of the finest tracks I’ve heard in awhile. Bookworm adds heavier synths and a quality, full throttle drum & bass sound. I then thought of “Open Page“, a track featuring Lenzman and Riya, a similar  downtempo drum & bass tune. With the vocals of Becky Ribeiro added over the sound, it comes out to be very magical. Overall, Bookworm has produced a beautiful EP and on top of that, it’s FREE on labcoated.com!

Beautiful Small Machines‘ single Simple Joys was inspired by Philip K. Dick’s classic book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, the novel that also inspired the Blade Runner movie. If you have neither read the book or seen the movie, the blog, Here Comes The Flood, explained the meaning behind Simple Joys saying,
“The pain and uncertainties of a world full of replicants while the protagonists are looking for simple joys is caught in a pastoral electronic angst…”

If you’re listening to the track and start to wonder why Beautiful Simple Machines sounds strikingly similar to Duran Duran, you are not misguided! Simon Le Bon did indeed lay down vocals that accompany the Beautiful Simple Machines duo on Simple Joys.

Repeat Business, was pieced together by Mindelixir, one of the major players in the Dubstep world and the name behind Bass Church, which is currently considered to be one of the largest monthly bass parties in the U.S. The album is quite an amalgamation of bass-heavy electronic bangers, featuring some of the most soon-to-be highly regarded names in the dubstep world. Ghetto Sexuual, Elfkowitz, Psymbionic and Stereotonin are just a few of the producers who Mindelixir puts on blast with the release of this compilation album.

What got me so geeked on Repeat Business, is that two homies of mine, LOBOUNCE (Giancarlo Pasquesi) and STRATUS (Patrick Stratton) (aka GHETTO SEXUUAL), are featured on the album. Believe me, the music these two create together, which they describe as, “low end, down tempo, sexuual debauchery” and I regard as some of the best glitchy, crunk-nasty, bass-heavy, bubble-poppin, wobble out right now, is definitely worth its price; if not more.

Big ups to LoBounce and Stratus for reppin’ The Chi right with their nasssty dope Dubstep sounds and always fresh steez!

Below, are three free track downloads and a bonus free mini-mix download. The first, “Keep Forgettin”, is the work of Chicago local boy, LoBounce. The second, called “Monday Morning” is from up-and-coming name Spooky Jones. The third, is a Stereotonin remix of a hip hop track by People Under the Stairs (aka PUTS), which has been on my “Top 10 Hip Hop Tracks of All Time” list for years. PUTS is a group that transcends time because of their simple, yet addictive, beats and the undeniable lyrical genius. Last, but not least, is a bonus free download of the “Repeat Business Mini-Mix” by Psymbionic. The Repeat Business tracklist and links to purchase the album, either in its entirety or each track individually, are also provided below. 

Sometimes, like many of you I’m sure, I find myself hesitating to download music when I actually have to pay for it. But, since we’re on the Dubstep, Chicago, and Ghetto Sexuual tip right now, I must highly reccomend that each and every one of you (especially if you don’t feel propelled to throw down the $15+ for the whole album) drop at least the measly $2+ for the two dope tracks by my homies: “Sonic (LoBounce Remix)“ and “Deep Breath” by Ghetto Sexuual.
